Essay DMD Case Analysis
1 General Information 15.060: Data, Models, and Decisions Professors Vivek Farias, Robert Freund,
and Cynthia Rudin Fall 2012 Description 01 2 Many managerial decisions–regardless of their
functional orientation–are increasingly based on analysis using quantitative models from the
discipline of management science. Management science tools, techniques and concepts (e.g., data,
models, and software programs) have dramatically changed the way businesses operate in
manufacturing, service operations, marketing, transportation, and finance. This subject is designed
to introduce first–year Sloan students to the fundamental techniques of using data to make informed
management decisions. In particular, we will focus on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because mastery of the basic mechanics is necessary for effective and discerning usage of the
concepts, we require that you do the homework assignments individually. In addition to their value
as learning exercises, doing a careful and thorough job on the homework assignments is the best
preparation for the final examination of the course. There are three types of assignments: Read,
Prepare and Hand In. Read: When the assignment is to Read some material, this reading is an
important introduction to the topics to be discussed in class. We will proceed on the assumption that
you have done the reading before class and have understood much (but not necessarily all) of it.
When the assignment is to Read a problem, that problem will often be used in class to introduce
new concepts. You should be familiar with the problem, but you will not be expected to have fully
analyzed it before the discussion in class. Prepare: Fully analyze the problem. Be ready to discuss it
in class, with model equations formulated, the numbers computed, etc. We will cold–call on people,
so please be ready. 15.060 Data, Models, and Decisions Professors Farias, Freund, Rudin General

The Invention Of The Nineteenth Century Essay

Prof.: Francis, Keith
Two Innovation of the Nineteenth Century
When asked what the most important invention is, many questions comes to mind, and these
questions must be answered before responding to the initial question. Basically, anything that did
not exist previously, whether it is a mechanical device or graphics, literature, or music, is an
"invention". The eighteenth, nineteenth and the twentieth centuries were met with innumerable of
new inventions, technical breakthroughs, and innovations. Steam locomotive, diesel engine and the
internet were two of the technological innovations that revolutionized societies in the nineteenth and
twentieth century. Invented in England in 1814, Steam locomotive was one of the technological
inventions that revolutionized the world. The first full scale locomotive was constructed by Richard
Trevithick a British mechanical engineer in 1804 at the Penydarren Ironworks in Wales. Before then
in 1797, Trevithick had constructed high–pressure working models of both stationary and
locomotive engines which was a success. With four driving wheels, Steam locomotive had smooth
wheels operating on smooth metal rails, its success showed that enough traction could be
accomplished without using gear wheels and a cogged or toothed track. Trevithick locomotive
exhausted its steam into the stack of the engine's firebox; this provided a forced conscription for the
blast in the firebox and was used on

Air Driven Engine Project Report
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
At first glance the idea of running an engine on air seems to be too good to be true. Actually, if we
can make use of air as an aid for running an engine it is a fantastic idea. As we all know, air is all
around us, it never runs out, it is non–polluting and it is free.
An Air Driven Engine makes use of Compressed Air Technology for its operation. Compressed Air
Technology is now widely preferred for research by different industries for developing different
drives for different purposes. The Compressed Air Technology is quite simple. If we compress
normal air into a cylinder the air would hold some energy within it. This energy can be utilized for
useful purposes. When this compressed air expands, the energy is ... Show more content on

Fig. 2.1 working of two stroke engine
There are no traditional valves in a two–stroke engine. In a two–stroke the engines fires once every
revolution. This makes the engine highly efficient and lightweight compared to four–stroke systems.
Rather than entering through valves, the fuel/air mixture enters through an intake port and exhaust
exits out of an exhaust port. In place of traditional valves the two–stroke engine uses the piston's
position to force out exhaust or suck in fuel mixture.
Reeds are vital to a two–stroke system. The reeds are placed between the intake manifold and the
carburetor, open and close to allow the fuel / air mixture to enter the case of the engine and trap it,
and ensure the proper exchange of gasses in the engine. This procedure might sound complex, but it
is, in fact, extremely effective and easy to understand.
The whole cycle can be explained as follows:
1) As the piston moves from bottom dead center to top dead center it creates a vaccum to draw the
fuel / air mixture through the carburetor and past the reed valve assembly.
2) The piston moves down from top dead center to bottom dead center. The reed closes, causing the
pressure to build in the cylinder. The movement of the piston uncovers the intake port and
pressurized the fuel / air mixture.
3) The piston now moves up from bottom dead center to top dead center, effectively ending a cycle
and starting another. The spark plug

In 1905, Mr. H Piper filed a patent for a gasoline engine–electric motor powertrain. According to
him, the electric motor would augment a gasoline engine, allowing a vehicle to accelerate from zero
to 25 miles an hour in 10 seconds, much faster than the gasoline engines of that time. Ironically,
when finally Mr.H Piper was granted the patent a few years later, normal engines were capable of
producing the same kind of acceleration.
Due to rapid advancements in the gasoline engine, the popularity of a hybrid car slowly diminished
untill again in the early to mid 1970s, the time of oil crisis. Many companies poured funds to build
experimental Hybrid Electric Vehicles. But as the oil became available again, the surge for HEVs
died down immediately.
The Europeans and Japanese researching on reducing production costs and making HEVs more
salable. Companies like Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen, Mitsubishi came up with ways to reduce
emissions and better the mileage.
Toyota introduced the Prius in 1997 (in Japan and in 2000 in the US) which proved to be a huge
success. Recent sales figures indicate that well over 300,000 units of Toyota Prius have been sold
the world over justifying the concept of a clean family car.
In 1999, Honda introduced its first production hybrid car, the Insight and then the Civic Hybrid in
2002.
Ford came up with the first hybrid SUV, the Escape, which hit the road in 2004. Quick on their path

Germany And The World War II
It is hard to believe that a war–torn country such as Germany can flourish into Europe's largest
economy. What is even harder to believe is that it had achieved this feat in a significantly shorter
time than other European nations. Germany had experienced devastating losses in both World War 1
and World War 2. The combinational blows of Germany's countless number of war casualties, the
irrational reparation payments and the following hyperinflation had crippled the German industry.
Despite this, German industry had managed to miraculously emerge at the top of the European
economy. The outcome of war was the key reason why Germany is as economically prosperous as it
is today There were several reasons to explain why the Germans were able ... Show more content on

Much like how a sponge absorbs water, Germany was constantly absorbing new technologies; often
improving them in the process. The German mainland was also very rich in natural resources. The
region was plentiful with wood, water, food, stone, and many other necessities to support a large
population. Abundances in coal, iron and oil will later prove to have an enormous contribution to the
mechanization of German industry. The region also had a fairly moderate climate, made it
significantly easier to grow food and granted more forgiving living conditions. German winter was
considerably warmer in comparison to that of its neighbours in Russia and Scandinavia, which
allowed for longer, often higher yielding growing seasons. The combination of a steady flow of new
ideas, an abundance of natural recourses and a forgiving climate granted the ideal conditions for
Germany to industrialize. By the early 19th century, Germany had consisted as several un–unified
Germanic states. Although these states were separate governing bodies, they had many things in
common which would ultimately lead to their unification. German nationalism was driven by four
main forces. The first of which was race. Many of the people in the region were derived from
Germanic origin. Much like as we have seen in the colonial United States, a commonly shared
ancestry has helped promote the unification of these nation states. Culture was another powerful

Unix And Unix Operating System
6.4 C–DOT DSS MAX is administrated by UNIX operating system
BSNL C–DOT DSS MAX uses UNIX operating system to operate the exchange.
The UNIX operating system is a set of programs that act as a link between the computer and the
user. The computer programs that allocate the system resources and coordinate all the details of the
computer 's internals is called the operating system or kernel.
Users communicate with the kernel through a program known as the shell. The shell is a command
line interpreter it translates commands entered by the user and converts them into a language that is
understood by the kernel.
UNIX was originally developed in 1969 by a group of AT&T employees at Bell Labs, including
Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, Douglas McIlroy, and Joe Ossanna.
There are various UNIX variants available in the market. Solaris UNIX, AIX, HP UNIX and BSD
are few examples.
Several people can use a UNIX computer at the same time; hence UNIX is called a multiuser
system. A user can also run multiple programs at the same time; hence UNIX is called multitasking.
This is why BSNL uses UNIX operating system as the exchanges can be operated through a remote
area.
UNIX operating system provides various commands to operate embedded systems in C–DOT DSS
MAX.
The commands used in C–DOT DSS MAX UNIX operating system are broadly divided into two
categories–
1. Administration command classes
2. Maintenance command classes
In Administration command classes, there

Since the universe was constructed inventions were made, and one of those inventions led to the
development of life changing items and ideas. It is said at the dawn of time a tribe of ape discovered
bones of fallen animals and had the idea of using those bones as tools and weapons. Therefore,
changing them, leading them to adapt to a new way of living and become superior towards other
tribes. It is thought that humans are those ape descendants. Earth is inhabited by brilliant minds

Once the miners used the idea of wagonways, the horses were able to pull at most two tons of coal,
and travel twenty miles a day. Around 1603, an entrepreneur in coal mining was credited as having
built the world's first wagonway specifically for transporting coal through several mine sites in
England. This first major railway made transportation for the coal miners significantly easier, but
not yet as efficient. So, in 1758 the Middleton Railway became a cheaper wagon transportation and
had wooden tracks that they used as a railway, until 1799 when they replaced them with iron edged
rails. This led the miners to be able to fill up forty tons of coal in wagons, and the railway (which
ran on a machine) would be able to travel two hundred miles a day, which led innovators to begin a
new way of thinking and the formation of new ideas. In 1781 James Watt made an improvement on
the Newcomen steam engine (an atmospheric engine invented in 1712 that was used to pump water
out of mines) and turned that power to harness steam and turned it into a steam engine train. This
led the Middleton Railway to become the first railway to use steam locomotives successfully. This
particular railway changed the way people would mine

Essay DMD Case Analysis

  • 1. Essay DMD Case Analysis 1 General Information 15.060: Data, Models, and Decisions Professors Vivek Farias, Robert Freund, and Cynthia Rudin Fall 2012 Description 01 2 Many managerial decisions–regardless of their functional orientation–are increasingly based on analysis using quantitative models from the discipline of management science. Management science tools, techniques and concepts (e.g., data, models, and software programs) have dramatically changed the way businesses operate in manufacturing, service operations, marketing, transportation, and finance. This subject is designed to introduce first–year Sloan students to the fundamental techniques of using data to make informed management decisions. In particular, we will focus on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because mastery of the basic mechanics is necessary for effective and discerning usage of the concepts, we require that you do the homework assignments individually. In addition to their value as learning exercises, doing a careful and thorough job on the homework assignments is the best preparation for the final examination of the course. There are three types of assignments: Read, Prepare and Hand In. Read: When the assignment is to Read some material, this reading is an important introduction to the topics to be discussed in class. We will proceed on the assumption that you have done the reading before class and have understood much (but not necessarily all) of it. When the assignment is to Read a problem, that problem will often be used in class to introduce new concepts. You should be familiar with the problem, but you will not be expected to have fully analyzed it before the discussion in class. Prepare: Fully analyze the problem. Be ready to discuss it in class, with model equations formulated, the numbers computed, etc. We will cold–call on people, so please be ready. 15.060 Data, Models, and Decisions Professors Farias, Freund, Rudin General Information/Syllabus Fall 2012 3 Hand In: The same as Prepare, but you must turn in your analysis. • 6. The Invention Of The Nineteenth Century Essay Student Name: Evans Ohene–Djan Course: HIST 125 6980 Prof.: Francis, Keith Two Innovation of the Nineteenth Century When asked what the most important invention is, many questions comes to mind, and these questions must be answered before responding to the initial question. Basically, anything that did not exist previously, whether it is a mechanical device or graphics, literature, or music, is an "invention". The eighteenth, nineteenth and the twentieth centuries were met with innumerable of new inventions, technical breakthroughs, and innovations. Steam locomotive, diesel engine and the internet were two of the technological innovations that revolutionized societies in the nineteenth and twentieth century. Invented in England in 1814, Steam locomotive was one of the technological inventions that revolutionized the world. The first full scale locomotive was constructed by Richard Trevithick a British mechanical engineer in 1804 at the Penydarren Ironworks in Wales. Before then in 1797, Trevithick had constructed high–pressure working models of both stationary and locomotive engines which was a success. With four driving wheels, Steam locomotive had smooth wheels operating on smooth metal rails, its success showed that enough traction could be accomplished without using gear wheels and a cogged or toothed track. Trevithick locomotive exhausted its steam into the stack of the engine's firebox; this provided a forced conscription for the blast in the firebox and was used on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Air Driven Engine Project Report CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION At first glance the idea of running an engine on air seems to be too good to be true. Actually, if we can make use of air as an aid for running an engine it is a fantastic idea. As we all know, air is all around us, it never runs out, it is non–polluting and it is free. An Air Driven Engine makes use of Compressed Air Technology for its operation. Compressed Air Technology is now widely preferred for research by different industries for developing different drives for different purposes. The Compressed Air Technology is quite simple. If we compress normal air into a cylinder the air would hold some energy within it. This energy can be utilized for useful purposes. When this compressed air expands, the energy is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fig. 2.1 working of two stroke engine There are no traditional valves in a two–stroke engine. In a two–stroke the engines fires once every revolution. This makes the engine highly efficient and lightweight compared to four–stroke systems. Rather than entering through valves, the fuel/air mixture enters through an intake port and exhaust exits out of an exhaust port. In place of traditional valves the two–stroke engine uses the piston's position to force out exhaust or suck in fuel mixture. Reeds are vital to a two–stroke system. The reeds are placed between the intake manifold and the carburetor, open and close to allow the fuel / air mixture to enter the case of the engine and trap it, and ensure the proper exchange of gasses in the engine. This procedure might sound complex, but it is, in fact, extremely effective and easy to understand. The whole cycle can be explained as follows: 1) As the piston moves from bottom dead center to top dead center it creates a vaccum to draw the fuel / air mixture through the carburetor and past the reed valve assembly. 2) The piston moves down from top dead center to bottom dead center. The reed closes, causing the pressure to build in the cylinder. The movement of the piston uncovers the intake port and pressurized the fuel / air mixture. 3) The piston now moves up from bottom dead center to top dead center, effectively ending a cycle and starting another. In 1905, Mr. H Piper filed a patent for a gasoline engine–electric motor powertrain. According to him, the electric motor would augment a gasoline engine, allowing a vehicle to accelerate from zero to 25 miles an hour in 10 seconds, much faster than the gasoline engines of that time. Ironically, when finally Mr.H Piper was granted the patent a few years later, normal engines were capable of producing the same kind of acceleration. Due to rapid advancements in the gasoline engine, the popularity of a hybrid car slowly diminished untill again in the early to mid 1970s, the time of oil crisis. Many companies poured funds to build experimental Hybrid Electric Vehicles. But as the oil became available again, the surge for HEVs died down immediately. The Europeans and Japanese researching on reducing production costs and making HEVs more salable. Companies like Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen, Mitsubishi came up with ways to reduce emissions and better the mileage. • 10. Germany And The World War II It is hard to believe that a war–torn country such as Germany can flourish into Europe's largest economy. What is even harder to believe is that it had achieved this feat in a significantly shorter time than other European nations. Germany had experienced devastating losses in both World War 1 and World War 2. The combinational blows of Germany's countless number of war casualties, the irrational reparation payments and the following hyperinflation had crippled the German industry. Despite this, German industry had managed to miraculously emerge at the top of the European economy. The outcome of war was the key reason why Germany is as economically prosperous as it is today There were several reasons to explain why the Germans were able ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Much like how a sponge absorbs water, Germany was constantly absorbing new technologies; often improving them in the process. The German mainland was also very rich in natural resources. The region was plentiful with wood, water, food, stone, and many other necessities to support a large population. Abundances in coal, iron and oil will later prove to have an enormous contribution to the mechanization of German industry. The region also had a fairly moderate climate, made it significantly easier to grow food and granted more forgiving living conditions. German winter was considerably warmer in comparison to that of its neighbours in Russia and Scandinavia, which allowed for longer, often higher yielding growing seasons. The combination of a steady flow of new ideas, an abundance of natural recourses and a forgiving climate granted the ideal conditions for Germany to industrialize. By the early 19th century, Germany had consisted as several un–unified Germanic states. Although these states were separate governing bodies, they had many things in common which would ultimately lead to their unification. German nationalism was driven by four main forces. The first of which was race. Many of the people in the region were derived from Germanic origin. Much like as we have seen in the colonial United States, a commonly shared ancestry has helped promote the unification of these nation states. Culture was another powerful ... The UNIX operating system is a set of programs that act as a link between the computer and the user. The computer programs that allocate the system resources and coordinate all the details of the computer 's internals is called the operating system or kernel. Users communicate with the kernel through a program known as the shell. The shell is a command line interpreter it translates commands entered by the user and converts them into a language that is understood by the kernel. UNIX was originally developed in 1969 by a group of AT&T employees at Bell Labs, including Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, Douglas McIlroy, and Joe Ossanna. There are various UNIX variants available in the market. Solaris UNIX, AIX, HP UNIX and BSD are few examples. Several people can use a UNIX computer at the same time; hence UNIX is called a multiuser system. A user can also run multiple programs at the same time; hence UNIX is called multitasking. This is why BSNL uses UNIX operating system as the exchanges can be operated through a remote area. UNIX operating system provides various commands to operate embedded systems in C–DOT DSS MAX. The commands used in C–DOT DSS MAX UNIX operating system are broadly divided into two categories– 1. Administration command classes 2. It is said at the dawn of time a tribe of ape discovered bones of fallen animals and had the idea of using those bones as tools and weapons. Therefore, changing them, leading them to adapt to a new way of living and become superior towards other tribes. It is thought that humans are those ape descendants. Once the miners used the idea of wagonways, the horses were able to pull at most two tons of coal, and travel twenty miles a day. Around 1603, an entrepreneur in coal mining was credited as having built the world's first wagonway specifically for transporting coal through several mine sites in England. This first major railway made transportation for the coal miners significantly easier, but not yet as efficient. So, in 1758 the Middleton Railway became a cheaper wagon transportation and had wooden tracks that they used as a railway, until 1799 when they replaced them with iron edged rails. This led the miners to be able to fill up forty tons of coal in wagons, and the railway (which ran on a machine) would be able to travel two hundred miles a day, which led innovators to begin a new way of thinking and the formation of new ideas. In 1781 James Watt made an improvement on the Newcomen steam engine (an atmospheric engine invented in 1712 that was used to pump water out of mines) and turned that power to harness steam and turned it into a steam engine train. This led the Middleton Railway to become the first railway to use steam locomotives successfully. This particular railway changed the way people would mine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
