2. Eurasian roller bird
Offspring of the bright-blue
Eurasian roller bird vomit a
foul-smelling orange liquid as a
defence mechanism against
predators when they are
frightened in their nest. Covered
in vomit, the nestlings become
less attractive as a snack.
Moreover the smell also alerts
parents, returning to the nest,
that a threatening incident has
happened in their absence.
3. Pygmy sperm whale
When the pygmy sperm whale
are under attack, they defend
themselves by releasing faecal
material into the water (in the
form of dark reddish-brown
liquid stored in a specialized
sack in their intestines) and
swirling it around with their
fins. The whales are
undoubtedly banking on the
notion that swimming through
a cloud of faeces will put off
any predator's appetite.
