Ants live in highly organized colonies underground with different types of ants having distinct roles. Worker ants that are sterile gather food and build the colony while larger soldier ants defend the colony. A single fertile queen ant and sometimes other fertile ants lay eggs to grow the population without working, while all other ants work to support the queen and colony. Ants can be found worldwide except Antarctica in their large underground colonies consisting of millions of individuals.
