2. What types of magazine and target
audiences has IPC been associated with
over the years?
IPC throughout the years have been associated with many different magazines, from the
1800s only they have been associated with:
Horse & Hound
Shooting Times
Yachting World
Amateur Gardening
Cycling Weekly
Amateur Photography
The Railway Magazine
As for the target audience in the begin of IPC it began by targeting middle aged men, from the
1800’s it has been associated with targeting people from with an interest in a wide variety of
sports, cultural interests and photography. From this it is evident that the IPC have been targeting
middle classed men because the magazines above are mainly associated with only is viewed and
participated by males and the reason it is middle class because these sports are viewed as only
beginning watch by a fairly wealthy audience.

Then in the new century many more different and new titles became part with the IPC
Media and from the 1900’s to 1960’s it collaborated with:
Yachting Monthly
Motor Boat
Woman’s Weekly
Golf Monthly
Woman & Home
Woman’s Own
Woman
Angler’s Mail
This wide variety of magazines shows that IPC has been associated and also
presents who the target audience is as well. It is clear that the IPC has continued to
target audiences with an interest in sports through the use of various sports
magazines such as ‘Golf Monthly, Yachting Monthly, Anglers Monthly and Motor
Boat. IPC has also chosen to target women which is apparently through the use of
women magazines such as ‘Woman, Woman’s Own, Women& Home’
4. What types of magazine and target audiences has IPC been
associated with over the years?

Then from the 1970’s to the 2000’s IPC continued to grow collaborated with more titles
such as:
Sporting Gun
Motor Caravan Magazine
Wedding & Home
Country Homes & Interiors
Classic Boats
Motor Boats Monthly
Practical Parenting
Bird Keeper
From this it is clear from the list above that the IPC has continued to focus on two if it’s
main target audiences which is middle aged men and middle aged women but has
increased the amount of titles it has been associated with these having a greater target
audience which will lead to most magazines to be sold to the audience.
5. Why might IPC be an appropriate publisher for a
new music magazine?
IPC would be an appropriate publisher for a new
music magazine as throughout the years they have
targeted many different target audiences so they
clearly know how to target a specific audience. An
example of this is ‘Golf Monthly’ and ‘Woman’ these
are two different target audiences one targeting
middle aged men and the other one targeting
middle aged women, so from this it is clear that IPC
have the required expertise and this is also evident
as they have experience in the publishing business
as they have been publishing magazines since
1853.
6. What sorts of genre’s music/types of
magazines might they be likely to
publish?
If IPC were to publish a magazine revolving music they
would most likely chose a genre that has a clear target
audience for example ‘Music’ this magazine deals with
the classical music genre, the reason why IPC would be
likely to publish a music magazine because the target
audience are easy to appeal as they are not as big as
other genres of music which is another reason why the
IPC might like to publish this magazine as from past and
present experience they tend to publish magazines with
a small audience percentage which is evident from
magazines they have published such as ‘Yachting
Monthly’ and ‘Motor Boat’.
7. Why might alternative
publishers like Bauer be
appropriate?
Bauer would be another alternative publisher as it too has a long history in
the publishing business spanning from 1875 to the present and sell a 38
million magazines weekly which shows that they have experience in
publishing and that their magazines are successfully and that they know
how to appeal their target audience to purchase the magazine. Bauer
targets a range of different target audiences and owns various magazines
including ‘FHM, Heat and Grazia.’ FHM is the biggest lifestyle magazine in
the UK and is aimed at young male adults and middle aged men. Heat is a
magazine which focuses on celebrity news, gossip and fashion whose main
target audience is young female adults but also has audiences such as
middle aged women and young teenagers. Grazia is an Italian magazine
also focusing on celebrity news and gossip and has the similar audiences as
heat magazine. From these magazines it shows that Bauer is a successful
publishing company as these are very well known and popular magazines
that the target audience have a high demand for, this also shows that they
have the knowledge on the different techniques on how to lure their target
audience towards the magazine and persuade them to purchase which is
why I feel that Bauer would be an appropriate alternative publisher.
