2. IPC Media
Types of magazines and target audiences:
IPC was formed in 1963, where the three leading UK magazine
publishers came together. Five years later International Publishing
Corporation ltd published its first magazine. Over the years IPC have
created many brands that have been leading the market they are in.
They have made a wide range of magazines
including, Nuts, NME, World Soccer, Woman’s Weekly and TV Times.
These carry a variety of target audiences but the most popular are
those created and aimed at younger men and women like NME or for
males especially, Nuts.
They would be an appropriate institution to create a new music
magazine as it has a very good background and a long lasting history
of NME running for many years. They have all the expertise to create
and release a professional magazine but wouldn’t want to create one
like NME as it would cut profits form that and create competition with
themselves. They are known for creating magazines like NME that are
relevant to the typical musical age range of 16-25 year olds.
3. Relevance as a publisher of a new music magazine.
They would be an appropriate institution to create a new music
magazine as it has a very good background and a long lasting history of
NME running for many years. They have all the expertise to create and
release a professional magazine but wouldn’t want to create one like
NME as it would cut profits form that and create competition with
themselves. They publish many magazines but NME is their only
magazine and has a great background so could easily sustain a new
music magazine.
Types of genre.
They would not want to publish any music magazines that were indie
like NME as they wouldn’t want to create competition for themselves.
Therefore they would want to publish magazines with similar music subgenres like rock or indie but they would be able to publish a magazine
like RnB where they would not create any more competition for
themselves.
4. Alternate Publishers
Bauer Media
Bauer media is Europe's largest privately owned publishing Group. The Group is a
worldwide media empire offering over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as
online, TV and radio stations meaning it is a cross media institution. It might be an
appropriate publisher as they publish many successful magazines like Kerrang, Mojo
and Q. These are all magazines which different genres; rock, classic rock and pop,
respectively.
These were all released at least 10 years ago and are great successes, demonstrating
their positive background in publishing. If I was intending to create a magazine with
Bauer there would be more obstacles as they cover a wider range of music genres
than IPC media do. There would be a gap for a new music magazine of my intended
sub-genre, RnB, and would make a more suitable publisher for my magazine. However,
the target audiences of all their magazines and my magazine match potentially causing
competition between them.
