4. On my front cover I use stereotypical techniques of other
magazine covers. My masthead is in large font in the top
third of my cover I then use this again on my contents page.
My masthead is clearly distinguishable from the other text. I
also have various strap and cover lines, with the most
important in the left third as this is the first thing you look at. I
do not, however, have a bar code as my magazine is a free
magazine and most magazines would have a bar code. Also
I have more ‘white space’ than an average magazine cover
this however is a disadvantage as it looks less professional
and more blank. I only used three colours across my contents
and cover where as more successful magazines may use
more colours and text to make it look more interesting and
lively.
5. Differences between The Student and Red
front cover
My masthead is across the top
third where as Red’s masthead is
in the left third
Red has far more cover lines and
uses more colours and text types
I have one distinctive main cover
line in the middle of my cover but
Red has several potential main
cover lines
Red has a bar code and as The
Student is a free magazine it doesn't
Reds main image goes right up to
the top of the cover and is zoomed
in close however mine is smaller to
make room for the masthead
6. Differences between The Student and Vogue
contents page
Both the Student and Vogue
have the masthead on the
contents page
The page title, ‘contents’ is
much larger on my magazine
and is more eye catching
than on vogue
Vogue has much more text
and only 2 images on its
contents where as my
magazine has less text and
more images
Both contents pages
have the page numbers
in larger font as it more
distinguishable
7. My feedback was mostly positive with comments about how the
masthead stands out and the main cover line catches
attention, that my advertisement for Starbucks is effective and that
is a decent, appropriate image for a student magazine.
My only criticism is that there is to much white space and that I need
more text to make it look fuller and I could include more images and
also that some of the text is hard to read. My audience also said
that by using some more colours it would look more pleasing to the
eye
8. To create my front cover I used
Photoshop, which is a desktop publishing
package and is an industry standard product.
Photoshop is primarily an image package.
• I have never used Photoshop before so it was all new to me however
through using it to create my front cover I learnt to put an image in and
how to do so without distorting it and then I also learnt how to remove the
background from the image so that is was only the image on show.
• I also learnt how to put in text and then use various effects on the text so
that it was different from all the other text. On my masthead I put a drop
shadow, an emboss, and also a faded effect.
9. To create my contents page I used InDesign which is
also a desktop publishing product of industry standard
however InDesign is used primarily for text and you
place in various images and text into boxes
• I have also never used InDesign before so again it was a learning
process however I found it fairly simple. I learnt that to add
anything to my contents page I must first make a box then place
the image or text in that box.
• I learnt how to edit and change the colour of the text and
shapes I used to make it look more professional
10. To create my contents page I used InDesign
which is also a desktop publishing product of
industry standard however InDesign is used
primarily for text and you place in various
images and text into boxes
• Through using blogger I have learnt how to put in blog entries and
save and publish them
• I have learnt how to add images to my blog
• I have also learnt the skill of keeping my blog continuously
updated throughout my preliminary task
11. Digital cameras I primarily used for taking
photographs. The benefit of a digital
camera is that it allows you to view the
image directly after taking the shot and
then to upload them to a computer to
view them and use them for whatever
they a needed for.
• I used digital camera to take photos for both my front cover and
contents page. I learnt different shot types and took a medium close up
for my front cover.
• I had to then upload them to the computer before inputting them into
InDesign and Photoshop
• I learnt about thinking about the image as a whole including the
background and what the model is doing and had the think about the
mise-en-scene when I took the image.
