The document discusses research conducted on music and magazine name preferences of 14 people aged 16-19. For music genres, most (8) preferred hip-hop, followed by pop (6), with no preferences for rock. For magazine names, "Rapital" was the most liked as it mixes rap with the radio name "Capital FM". The document also provides considerations for magazine design elements like mastheads, fonts, and color schemes that appeal to a hip-hop audience.

For my research I asked 14 people 7 males and 7 females so that the
results would be equal. I asked if they preferred Hip hop, Rock or Pop
genre. The age of the people I asked were between 16-19. The results
show that most people picked Hip-Hop music and following by Pop this
is because these genres are very popular to teenagers. For the Hip Hop
genre all the males and one female preferred Hip Hop and for pop all
remaining females picked this genre.
3. I have chosen the genre of Hip Hop, as this is my
favourite genre of music and I will be more familiar
in this genre, so I will know what the audience will
be looking for. I also decided to pick this genre as
from my research it helped me understand that this
is a very popular genre.
4. Underground – This name came up as Hip Hop artists start
from the bottom and rise up.
Rapital – this word relates to hip hop as the first part of the
word “Rap” is what Hip Hop music is and I used the last part
of the name from the music station “ Capital Fm” which is
known for playing Hip Hop music.
Freestylez - this word means when hip hop artists improvise
when they are rapping/singing.
UrbanMusic – Urban music is music that originated from black
people but now is listened to a wide audience. So this relates
to Hip Hop.
Bars – I might chose this name as it relates to the genre of Hip
Hop, because this word comes from the sub genre which is
grime and the word bars is another word verse.

For my research I asked 14 people 7 males and 7 females so that the
results would be equal. I asked what magazine names they liked that
would best suit a Hip Hop magazine. The age of the people I asked
were between 16-19. The results show that the most liked magazine
name was “Rapital” as they liked the idea of mixing rap and the radio
name “Capital Fm” and also that it was more unique then the others.
6. Codes & Conventions-
The masthead should always stand out the most from all the other
features on the magazine such as the cover lines etc. Mast heads
are usually in big font size and eye catching colours. One of the
main conventions are that the mast head is located on the top of
the page either in the left, middle or right side to attract attention
and build brand awareness. Also, the mast head should relate to
the genre of the magazine for example a rock magazine will have
dark colours and eerie fonts to portray rock, as rock is stereotyped in
this way.
My masthead –
My mast head will be in the middle of the front page in red to attract
the audience. My mast head will symbolise genre as red can portray
violence which Hip Hop is stereotyped as. Also the font will show
genre and target audience as the lettering will be masculine.
7. The font I pick is very important as it depicts
the target audience and the genre.
Furthermore, the font builds a brand
image that will be only associated with
my magazine and build a house style
unique to my magazine.
8. This font Sans serif is commonly used by
magazine publishers as it can be used in a
variety of ways for example headings or
captions. The font stands out as it is very
modern and aimed at a teenager audience.
But the font is plain and nothing extraordinary
and if I were to use this font for cover lines it
wouldn't stand out but for small writing it is
suitable.
9. This type of font is called serif font
it can be used for small writing
such as for the double page
spread but isn't suitable for cover
lines or headings. I wouldn't go for
this particular font as it looks very
old styled for example in the
“Times New Roman” the curves on
the lettering shows that it is very
outdated and would not relate to
my target audience.
10. This is a colour board that will give an idea of
what colours I could go for my magazine that
would be suitable for the audience and genre.
White Black Red
I could go for these three colours as they contrast
each other nicely and stand out. From looking at
different hip hop magazines they use these
colours a lot as red can portray “violence” as
most Hip Hop music relate to violence in their
music.
11. Yellow /
Gold
Black
These two colours contrast each
other and stand out as it is light
clashing with a dark colour. In Hip
Hop music yellow can portray gold
jewellery as all Hip Hop artists wear
gold chains and watches.
White
Blue black White
These three colours could be a
possibility for my colour scheme
because they are masculine and
relate to a male audience as males
usually listen to hip hop music.
