Learning creative software and skills for magazine production
1.
2. ď‚ž Through out the process I have learned how to use Photoshop, which I did enjoy
using especially as it had made me more creative with my student preliminary
magazine due to using the tools, which we had used quite a few of but some of them
I being: quick selection tool, the polygon tool and the magic wand tool to delete the
background of the photograph advertising the free Costa on my contents page.
However to make it look more professional I then used the brush tool to replace any
of the photograph I accidently deleted but then reversed the brush so it would delete
more background in case I added a bit too much background on to the photograph
afterwards. I found this process quite frustrating as I had to be more precise and
accurate with the areas I removed, but I feel like it’s all good practise because when I
start the other magazine I will know what to prepare myself for and enjoy this
element more than being frustrated when it didn’t go how I wanted it to straight away.
We also used a website called Dafont on our student magazine, to produce the text
for our masthead as there are loads of different fonts available to decide from,
however I found this quite time consuming to begin with as I wanted to pick a font
which would suit my magazine purpose and appeal to the target audience but once I
had chosen my font I was pleased with the outcome of my masthead, but for the next
magazine I wont spend too much time choosing a font due to it not being the most
important thing on my magazine.
3. ď‚ž Whilst we were planning our student magazine we had the
opportunity to upload our location recce of where we want
photographs to be placed and why on a software called Prezi. Prezi I
personally believe is an easy way to present my work due to the
template already being on the system and all I had to do was upload
my photographs on to the presentation and then explain the
photograph in more depth and specifically to why we wanted our
photographs where they were located in our experimental shoot. For
this shoot we used our phones to take the shoot, whereas for the
final shoot we used camera’s which we had booked out from college
the day we used them so our photographs would look more
professional compared to photographs which we would have taken
on our phones, we had to book the cameras out so the teachers
would know how to contact us if we didn’t return but also who was
responsible for the cameras, although we had one camera between
a group, all of us had to fill in a booking sheet as it’s proof we have
taken our own photographs.
4.  Emaze I really enjoyed using to present my work, mainly because I felt like it’s the
most creative software out of all the presentational software’s which I personally have
used to present my work on, with many different templates to use to present the work
on it makes them more interesting to look at meaning people may take the time to
read what I have actually wrote, I used the Emaze software to present my first
evaluation question on as I knew there would be a lot of writing involved, meaning
more writing which people would want to read and not be forced to read and it being
boring if I had just left it on a Word document. I did find this quite annoying and difficult
to begin with when I first started using it as I didn’t know what I was meant to be doing
on the website, but lucking as I soon picked it up I was then able to improve and
actually know what I was doing rather than being confused at how to do different tasks
on there, as at first I wanted to add text and it took me a while to find the function
button for it, for the text to then be white leaving me confused as I couldn’t find how to
change the colour but this software had originally confused me. However for my
second evaluation question I am using PowerPoint to show I have a wide us of ICT
skills as I am using a variety of software's to present my work on, I think PowerPoint is
a simple software to use and it also quite easy to use but it’s another presentational
software which I can say I have used throughout my coursework. To get this on my
blogger page, I need to upload it upon Slide share, then embed the link on to a new
post on my blog.
5. ď‚ž For our magazine we started with an experimental shoot to decide where we
want to take photographs due to having to keep the background in mind but
also the models we were going to have. After this we produced our
production schedule so we knew where we were going, who we were taking
photographs off and the props we will need for our photos. We also produced
a risk assessment on Word so we were aware of any possible risks that could
have gone wrong but how to prevent them as well. After all of this was
completed we were then able to take our final shoot, however I completed
this over two days as Paul Ashdown was on my front cover I made an
appointment with him to take the photos but these photographs were taken
on my phone, and then the photographs which we took on the final shoot we
had a Panasonic camera, a tripod if we needed and the studio lights which
were available at college. I really enjoyed this section of the prelim task as I
am keen about photography and this task suited me well, I found it helpful as
well as I improved my skills especially with the lighting side of photography.
The photos which I took on my phone turned out a lot better than I expected,
especially the photo of the principle on my front cover, as it wasn’t pixelated
and fuzzy, when I enlarged the photograph to fit on my cover.
6. ď‚ž Blogger is the website where all of our class upload our work for the
examiners to see and for our teacher to monitor how we are doing.
We upload weekly diary entries based around our production in class
that lesson, what we found challenging and what we enjoyed about
the lesson. I like this website to upload our work on to as we can
publish Word documents which we have already produced our,
production schedule and both risk assessments on by uploading
them on to a website called Slideshare then embedding the link on to
Blogger ready to be published, our Prezi presentation also went on
to our blog, along with the Emaze presentation which I have used for
the first evaluation question and then the posts which we have
published on the website like our targets and reflections post. I think
this website is also helpful because we can compare our work to
other people’s within our class as we can view their blogs meaning
we can see how differently they have presented certain documents
but also what templates they use on either Prezi or Emaze.
