The Lion King Analysis
Many people after watching the movie, "The Lion King," directed by Roger Allers and Rob
Minkoff, thought it was based off of the legend of Sundiata by his griot. People said "He was The
Lion King of Mali." His life was just like Simba's. Nare Maghann Konate who was the father, and
Sogolon Conde who was the mother, got married and Sundiata Keita was born. He learned about the
land and where he lived. As he grows up, he gets his own griot. Soon, Nare Maghann Konate dies.
Sundiata's exile was planned to run away and grow older in a different place somewhere else.
He started learning about the land he was currently in. During this period of time, Soumaoro Kante
took over Niana. A search party was sent out looking for Sundiata. One of the village members
found him and told him Soumaoro has taken control over where he used to live. Shortly after the
find, Sundiata returns with an army, ready to fight the other army that Soumaoro put ... Show more

Essay about Arthurian Legends Effects on English Society
What role did the great King Arthur play in the way English Literature is perceived? Did King
Arthur honestly exist? "Whether King Arthur existed or not is doubtful. However if King Arthur did
exist, then he would have lived sometime between 400 AD and 600 AD, a time of turmoil in Britain
following the Roman withdrawl. And a time when written literature did not exist, therefore events
during this period are only known about from folklore passed down several generations before being
written down, or from modern archeology giving insights from excavations of sites. If there was
ever a true King Arthur in history, he would probably be Romano–British warleader, probably
named Artorius, which is a Roman name for Arthur. Though the Roman ... Show more content on

The Arthurian Legends were an effect of the Romantic Era and resulted in abstract thinking, as well
as the arts including music, painting, poetry, and writing. The birth of the Arthurian Legends came
from Celtic mythology and medieval romance, while the existence of magic confirms the conception
of artistic intellect. Whether or not King Arthur truly existed, his influence dramatically changed the
English society and English Literature to its current form (Arthurian Legends Vol. 1).
The Arthurian Legend is seen to be extremely influential in benefitting the English people during the
Romantic Era. Even if King Arthur is a fictional character of myth and legend in England, his
childhood, countless glories and achievements as the king of Camelot, and the final down fall of his
strong empire validated his importance to English literature. Proof of King Arthur's existence would
possibly solidify the impact he had on the English culture (Arthurian Legends Vol. 1). The early
childhood of King Arthur seems to be the foundation of the epic journey of his life. Even though his
achievements as a child were brief, they were extremely important to King Arthur's outlook on life,
as well as character. As an optimistic squire, King Arthur had hopes of one day overcoming his
social standing. He received his wish when he unknowingly pulled the magical sword out of the
stone.

How To Describe The Velvet Underground
5. The Velvet Underground – Sister Ray
This classic rock song was a staple of The Velvet Underground's live shows. They often closed out
their set with "Sister Ray," jamming out for up to thirty minutes, sometimes more. The studio
recording of it was a single take that lasts over seventeen minutes.
4. The Kingsmen – Louie Louie
This song was a Richard Berry single from 1955, which The Kingsmen covered in 1963 at
Northwestern, Inc., Motion Pictures and Recording, located in Portland. Like many single–take
recordings, the track contains an audible error just after the first guitar break. Jack Ely starts singing
the second verse too early and stopped himself short, creating a gap that drummer Lynn Easton
smoothly filled with a clever drum fill. The band actually weren't too thrilled with the first take, but
for some reason, that was the only one they did, and it became a classic rock song.
3. The Animals – House of the Rising ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The recording took place in London, in May of 1964. Still considered one of the greatest rock songs
ever, the one–off reached the top of US and UK charts shortly after its release, making it their
signature hit.
2. The Beatles – Twist & Shout
While recording their debut album Please Please Me The Beatles famously did a one–off cover of
The Isley Brothers song "Twist & Shout." Recording 11 songs in only 10 hours, John Lennon's voice
was hurting, to say the least, on top of his having a cold at the time. Producer George Martin had left
this song for last, and though they attempted a second take, Lennon's voice was gone by them. It's
also rumored that Lennon chugged a glass of milk before the first take in an attempt to soothe his
throat, which gave his voice that extra raspiness audible on "Twist & Shout." It was the first take
only in this case!

The Great Gatsby- Color Symbolism
The Power of Color Colors are used many different ways by many different people, but are used
mainly as a reflection of the way one feels or his or her own personality. This idea is depicted
through the different characters created in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, set in the post–
World War I era. The novel evinces the major themes through the use and explanation of many
diverse colors. Jay Gatsby, the most significant character in the story, leads a very materialistic
lifestyle. Hoping to gain back his old love, Daisy, Gatsby uses his money to impress her, hopefully
leading to their settling down together. Daisy's second cousin once removed, Nick Carraway, is the
link that helps to connect Gatsby and Daisy. Nick "deliberately ... Show more content on

Caught in the romantic atmosphere of the night, Nick puts "[his] arm around Jordan's golden
shoulder" (Fitzgerald 79). Both description serve to symbolize the fact that she is happy and quite
valuable, as of now, to Nick. While gold and silver are two valuable colors to the characters, gray
symbolizes the corruption behind the money. One depressing color that is quite significant to the
story happens to be the very dull gray. Gray represents the neutral, dull and corrupt society that
resides in America. It is seen, through some of the structures, that corruption has made a big impact
on everyone surrounding them. One such structure, that is only mentioned briefly, is the villages in
France. When Nick first meets and talks to Gatsby, they bring up how both men look familiar to one
another. Ironically, they both took part in some section of World War I, Gatsby, in the "ninth
machine–gun battalion," and Nick, in the "Seventh Infantry" (Fitzgerald 47). During the quick
recapitulation of the war, "[they] talked for a moment about some wet, gray little villages in France"
(Fitzgerald 47). These villages represent the corruption and destruction that the war has brought to
the people and society of France. Another gray structure is the windows at Gatsby house. Even
though Gatsby is a man of money and success, "the gray windows" on his home signify that this
happiness is just a facade, and that in reality, there is much fraudulence hidden within Gatsby

Fitzgerald’s Use of Color in the Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, The Great Gatsby, exposes the corruption and greed of the
Roaring Twenties. Fitzgerald is able to captivate readers' attentions through his employment of color
symbolism. Fitzgerald portrays important messages in the novel by his symbolic use of colors.
Colors play an important role in Fitzgerald's descriptions of the lives of Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway
and many of the other characters in the novel. Fitzgerald uses the colors white, yellow, and green to
express certain sentiments to the reader, commenting what is going on in the story. Fitzgerald uses
the color white to symbolize purity and innocence, while yellow is used to symbolize moral decay,
and death. Green is used to represent hope and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Gatsby attempts to hide his dishonesty, Nick, considers himself "one of the few honest people
that I have ever known" (Fitzgerald, 59) and Fitzgerald often describes him as wearing white. The
first time he attends one of Gatsby's infamous parties, he wears a white flannel suit. Nick is aware of
the importance of this event, being formally invited to one of Gatsby's parties, and wants to project
the right image. His white suit emulates honesty and the appearance of being untainted. Similar to
white projecting honesty and purity, Fitzgerald also uses it to symbolize perfection. Daisy, always in
white, was perfect in Gatsby's eyes. He lived his life around her, in order to reclaim her. Just as
Daisy's whiteness symbolized perfection to Gatsby, the white world of the upper class was the
epitome of perfection for Myrtle Wilson, Tom's mistress. To Myrtle, the perfect life would be to live
like Daisy, to be wealthy. Although she lives in the valley of ashes as the wife of a garage owner, she
feels she belongs with the upper class. She stakes claim in high society through Tom, but will never
be fully able to gain access to their elite world. Fitzgerald shows her attempt to become "white"
through her clothing. When she is first seen in the novel, she is wearing "a spotted dress of dark
blue" (Fitzgerald, 25).

Critical Analysis of a Passage from Horace Walpole's...
Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto, is acknowledged by many as the first gothic novel. It was
the first of it's kind and many of the conventions used by Walpole, which put it in a literary genre of
it's own, were continued by authors such as Ann Radcliffe and Matthew Lewis. Many of these
defining characteristics can be seen within the very first few pages of the text and for the purposes
of this essay, to identify some of these conventions used and the relevance of this text to modernity I
shall focus this analysis on the passage between pages twenty–four and twenty–six from the Oxford
World's Classics edition.
The gothic novel emerged during the late eighteenth century and the 'Age of Enlightenment', which
emphasised rationality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Otranto, Walpole challenges his societies views of modernity and transgresses social laws by
introducing the theme of incest into his novel with Manfred preying of his deceased son's betrothed,
Isabella. This brings into play three defining features which became prevalent within gothic novels
of the late eighteenth century: women in distress; women being threatened by powerful males; and
the major theme of fear and in this example, specifically female fear. Isabella, a young, virginal
woman becomes "half dead with fright" when faced with potential rape and becoming a spoiled
woman at the hands of the powerful and threatening Manfred. Such suggestions, by Walpole's age
were seen as scandalous and caused moral outrage, a thread that was carried through the gothic
genre. This new genre may have provided for many, an escape from the rigid world of
enlightenment. It brought to them a world of imagination and allowed them to immerse themselves
in a world which had been morally forbidden and they could do it from the privacy of their own
homes, allowing their indulgence, and perhaps, immoral thoughts to go unnoticed, providing a way
for the darkness and immoral thoughts to come alive outside of the novel. At the end of the novel
however, society's moral ideals surface as Manfred retires to a convent after the realisation of his
sins and order is restored. In this way, although Walpole is exposing his readers to these ideas, he

Analysis Of `` The Ways Of Oppression `` By F. Nelson Mandela
The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall" – Nelson
Mandela. It takes high risks and a lot of vitality to overcome oppression. In Martin Luther King's
essay, "The Ways of Oppression," there are three distinct ways on how to deal with oppression,
which are acquiescence, violence, and non–violent resistance. All of these strategies of dealing with
oppression are established in both the film and novel adaptation of the "Unbroken," as Louie
Zamperini spends many years as a POW in Japan enduring cruel oppression. Throughout the story,
the three strategies alternate amongst Louie and his fellow POWs, however, towards the end it's
clear that non–violent resistance is the most successful form of overcoming oppression because it
makes Louie the bigger man in learning how to forgive and understand more openly. The first way
of dealing with oppression King mentions in his essay is acquiescence. He describes the
acquiescence method as the oppressor becoming accustomed to the unjust treatment. In the novel,
Unbroken, it became a daily routine for the men to carry tons of coal on their backs. "They pushed
aboard one another, and the hauling went on, punishing their bodies and numbing their minds"
(187). This shows how Louie and his fellow POWs grew accustomed to the painful labor their
endured at the camp. They couldn't do anything but continue working because their lives were at
risk from the deadly conditions. Another characteristic of the

Spousal Relationships in Macbeth and Oedipus the King Essay
In Macbeth, by William Shakesphere, and Oedipus the King by Sophocles, the spousal relationship
between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, and Oedipus and Jocasta, play a major role in the events that
lead to the tragedy. Their love, respect, and determination for each other reveal the nature of the
relationship shared by them.
In Macbeth, the bond between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is strong. For instance, when he first
hears the prophecy from the three weird sisters, he immediately writes to Lady Macbeth informing
her about the prophecies. Further, he addresses her as "my dearest partner of greatness," which gives
the reader several views on their relationship. For instance, George Gerwig reports that "Lady

Finally, the strength of their bond can be seen when Macbeth becomes despondent at the news of
Lady Macbeth death. He feels that he has lost all hopes since he had undergone all those evil deeds
just for her.
Just as the bond between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is strong, so does the bond between Oedipus
and Jocasta in Oedipus the King. Oedipus has excessive pride in him and is known for his swift
actions. It is Jocasta who tries to stop him from jumping into decisions without thinking about the
outcome. For instance, when Oedipus accuses Creon and Tiresias for treachery, Jocasta tries to
reason out with Oedipus. She tells him to not to believe in prophecies as they are not true. She
narrates to Oedipus the tale of the prophecy of her son that he would one day kill his own father
(Laius). She further tells him that the prophecy never came true because her son was killed when he
was a child and that Laius was killed by a group of thieves. Similarly, when she comes to know part
of the truth of Oedipus birth, she requests him to stop his search for the truth. She fears that his
search for the truth about his birth and parents, would lead to his own destruction. This shows that

Essay about Wealth in The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald
Wealth can develop a unique interpretation upon a person's life and can impact their future. Wealth
can be such a strong impact on someone that can determine whether they're selfish or a given
person. Wealth can definitely be overpowering and misleading, which could portray their true
identity. In the historical fiction novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it shows us how
misleading wealth can be in a person's life.
One of the reasons why wealth is involved in Gatsby's life is because he is spending his own money
on things that aren't necessary. Nick was explaining how he didn't see a party one Saturday night, "It
was when curiosity about Gatsby was at its highest that the lights in his house failed to go on one
Saturday night" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, "My Finn informed me that Gatsby had dismissed every servant in his house a week
ago and replaced them with half a dozen others" (114). This infers how Gatsby uses his money to
protect him from rumors by paying his servants. In addition, Daisy and Tom escaped from justice
and went on vacation. This example shows how Tom and Daisy are manipulated into thinking that
money can solve any issue.
Furthermore, Wealth can make someone feel determined. Gatsby was determined to get Daisy, and
the only way to get Daisy was to become wealthy. To represent Gatsby's interception of becoming
wealthy, this quote symbolizes his determination and beginning to a happier life; "To Young Gatz,
resting on his oars and looking up at the railed deck, that yacht represented all the beauty and
glamour in the world" (100). This quote accurately describes Gatsby's desires for wealth and his
material items. The yacht, which belonged to Dan Cody, was the embodiment of wealth and fortune
Gatsby was not familiar with. He lived a low life of poverty, and this was his goal that he wanted to
reach. Dan took Gatsby with him and adopted him in a way, which gave Gatsby his start to fortune.
Once Gatsby gained all of his fortune, he practically had all of the beauty and glamour in the world.
Nevertheless, it always comes back to his lack of true beauty and love. He could never regain Daisy,
his true love, and the beauty that he could never purchase.

When I went to go see The Lion King on Broadway a few words came to mind after the play;

Granted, we have come a long way, but there are still many people who are a long way from
changing their attitudes towards them. "On March 3, 1991, Rodney King was the driver of a car in

increased his speed. When police finally stopped the car, they delivered 56 baton blows and six

Essay on Lady Macbeth
Discuss whether or not you feel sympathy for Lady Macbeth
There are certain aspects of Lady Macbeth's character that suggests she is good and therefore her
downfall increases my sympathy for her by the end of act 5. But I would also argue that she entailed
evil to fuel her sleeping ambition that would make her nemesis, her mental collapse, fully justified.
Lady Macbeth's role as a supporting wife at the start of the play exceeds the duties of a 'normal'
wife. She is the 'Eve' to Macbeth's 'Adam' and is tempted. Although Macbeth hints at the idea of
taking the crown in his letter home, it is Lady Macbeth's ruthless determination to make him king
that persuaded him to murder Duncan. Did she do this in the interests of Macbeth or was it ... Show
more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although I have expressed unsympathetic views about Lady Macbeth, I do feel that a certain
amount of sympathy arises from Act 5 Scene 1, which tends to hide her previous evil deeds. Lady
Macbeth has not been seen by the audience for some time, this is because Macbeth has shut her out
of his life and she has become isolated and lonely. Lady Macbeth's mental collapse is caused by her
acknowledgement of her share of guilt and is expressed by images of Duncan's blood, "...will these
hands ne'er be clean?..."
This is also a contrast to her belief that water cleanses the conscience of any guilt. Lady Macbeth's
mental collapse reinforces the idea of Scotland being diseased under Macbeth's reign and because he
was not put their by divine right he cannot cure her.
Lady Macbeth's role as a supporting wife resurfaces again in scene 5. She is now afraid of the dark,
which is in contrasts to her earlier wishes for darkness to conceal the murder. Lady Macbeth is
haunted by dreams, like Macbeth ( "...O full of scorpions is in my mind..." ), and sleep walks; this
echoes my last sentence in that she is now taking on the trauma and guilt from her husband. This
reveals Lady Macbeth's compassion and love for her husband

Adverse Influence of Disney Movies on the Younger Generation
Disney Movies Having a Bad Influence On the Younger Generation
"Our heritage and ideals, our codes and standards – the things we live by and teach our children –
are preserved or diminished by how freely we exchange ideas and feelings". (Disney) This quote by
Walt Disney himself just shows how he felt his values were in good thought. But the problem is his
movies didn't always portray these values. Many of the Disney Classics that our generation has
grown to know and love have exposed children to many bad values. Classics such as: Snow White
and the Seven Dwarves, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatians, The Little
Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Pocahontas display lessons not suitable for

The crows in the movie Dumbo, furthermore, show racism. The blackbirds act in a manner
stereotypically assigned to Africans. (Joseph) The Lion King, Disney's most well–known, loved, and
adored Classic, is racist. The members of the royal family speak with posh British accents while the
hyenas speak with a mixture of decidedly urban, black and Latino youth and the other animals in the
kingdom don't even talk. Coming to Aladdin, the song Arabian Nights is the most insulting out of
them all. The original lyrics state: "Oh I come from a land–From a far away place–Where the
caravan camels roam. –Where they cut off your ear–If they don't like your face. –It's barbaric, but
hey, it's home." Arab culture magnifies popular stereotypes already primed by the media through its
portrayal of the Gulf War. (Giroux)
Racism and subliminal messages seem petty to the fact that in today's world Disney seems to still be
sexist against women. In the movie Sleeping Beauty, Aurora, being already born into the royal
family, was bestowed with the gift of beauty. She is described as "lips as red as the red red rose".
She is the typical girl that everyone wants: fair skin, blue eyes, long blonde hair, and an impossibly
thin figure. Aurora is given a curse and can only be woken up by "true love's first kiss". Of course
she is saved right before she could literally die. In present terms this event demonstrates the fact that
women will "die" if they never

What impact did Act 1 Scene 1 of King Lear have on you?
The first scene of the first act of King Lear had a genuinely dramatic affect upon me.
This first glimpse into the world of Lear and his subordinates sets the premise for the whole play,
unravelling within the first few pages, themes which I believe will become increasingly evident. The
scene opens with the introduction of three characters – Kent, Gloucester and Edmund. Of these three
characters the only one who seems not to have been shown in an unfavourable light yet, by this brief
introduction, is Kent. This could be intentional to set It is made clear Edmund is a bastard, and

At this point of the scene it can be clearly noticed how similar Goneril and Regan are, as Regan asks
Lear to measure her worth as he measured Goneril's. This closeness seems symbolic in a way to the
close–knit coven in Macbeth, as these women seem to have underlying deceptive qualities. Before
considering Cordelia's answer to Lear, we must note her comments made during Goneril and
Regan's 'speeches'. This is keen use of the aside speech by Shakespeare as the audience would be
able to hear Cordelia's confusion over what her response shall be and her truthful belief that her love
is more ponderous than her tongue. Her indecision over what to say to her father shows really how
much she does not want to offend him, but instead she does the opposite, as he cannot see beyond
his pride, to her loyal words.
When she says "Nothing", she is indicating to him that he should no the worth of her love for him.
The king, shocked with this appearance of ingratitude in his favourite child, desired her to consider
her words, and to mend her speech, lest it should mar her fortunes. Cordelia then tells Lear that she
loves him according to her station, and as much as he loves her as his daughter. She is as she says
"young...and true". Lear is obviously hurt but it seems, due to the severity of his actions, that his
pride and title have been harmed more. He disowns her and she becomes his "sometime daughter".

The darkness also gives a sense of mystery to the author's writing. 'In the glow of an angry sunset,'
the stranger re–visits the line to see the signalman. The word 'angry' is far from comfortable or
romantic. This line also gives an eerie feel to the fading light and gives a feel that suggests that
something is must and is about to happen that is dark and evil. An Arrest by Ambrose Bearcy is a
story of a murderer who was awaiting 'his trial,' escaped by 'knocking down his jailer with an iron
bar,' and went into the forest. It was night and the forest in to which, he entered was renowned for
being wild and unsafe. He goes for many a mile and some how manages to exit the forest and finds
an old road and on the road there stood 'the figure of a man, motionless in the gloom.' The gothic
style protrudes from this line of the novel very clearly and adds to the sense of suspense and fear
that is plaguing this scene. The fugitive is almost face to face with 'the figure of a man,' and feels he
cannot turn his back for fear of being 'filled with buckshot,' so he stood there like a tree. The fugitive
is hoping that if he stands still enough he will become a tree and escape this horror. Until the moon
'sailed into a patch of unclouded sky,' 'the haunted man saw the visible embodiment of law lift an
arm and point significantly beyond him.' At which 'he

Compare and Contrast Essay on King Lear and Macbeth
Shakespeare had written many plays in his life time, some of them included various tragedies which
included King Lear and Macbeth. All of Shakespeare's plays had a theme which was used to help
the story's plot to advance further, making events much more interesting. King Lear and Macbeth
both have a common theme of madness that is apparent throughout the play which has been depicted
differently. They are both written in different ways but still share a same purpose. The essay will be
broken down into three parts; firstly we will look at the way madness is viewed in Macbeth.
Secondly, we will look at the way King Lear portrays madness lastly we will compare the two to see
how differently madness is displayed. While both plays share this ... Show more content on

Ross responds to him,
What sights, my lord (III.iii.118).
The Insanity of Macbeth is shown in these quotes. Shakespeare's description of Macbeth's thoughts
visibly reveals the theme of madness.
Shakespeare portrays madness among many of his characters, and he returns to the theme again and
again. Indirect characterization in the form of Lear's mad speeches allows Shakespeare to convey
the theme of madness. For example one of Lear's first speeches after things started to go bad for
him,
Poor naked wretches, wheresoe'er you are, That bide the pelting of this pitiless storm, How shall
your house–hold heads and unfed sides, Your loop'd and window'd rag–gedness, defend you...
(III.iv.35–38).
Lear's insanity increases throughout the play, demonstrated to the audience through more speeches,
until his emotions overthrow his reason at the climax of the play. Lear randomly shouts in to the
storm,
Rumble thy bellyfull! Spit, fire! Spout, rain! Nor rain, wind, thunder, fire are my daughters. I tax not
you, you elements, with unkindness. I never gave you kingdom, called you children (III.ii.14–17).
The example of Lear invoking the storm to destroy the seeds of matter along with many other
absurd statements illustrates that he has an

Medieval Outlaw Definitions
The most obvious thing that stood out to me after watching these two videos, is that history seems to
be notorious for being rewritten and misconstrued every step of the way. The first video I watched
addressed some of the modern misinterpretations of the medieval outlaw. It was abundantly clear
that the heroic and chivalrous we have of Robin Hood and other noble outliers of justice is a highly
romanticized and inaccurate depiction of these outlaws. Through the years of the medieval age, the
term outlaw took on many varying legal definitions. In certain communities and under their current
laws being declared an outcast was an extremely serious and polarizing title. Then as the laws of the
land began to shift, it was quite common being stated

For millennial's a day doesn 't go by that they aren 't streaming music. There are millions of songs
and hundreds of ways to listen to them, a person is constantly absorbing information, whether it is
consciously or subconsciously. If someone was to constantly allow his subconscious to be filled
with violence it would affect his day to day life, and if everyone allows their world to be filled with
hateful, violent, misogynistic influences it will affect the overall societal values of our society. The
future is held in the hands of a generation that is constantly being fed words of hate, what does that
say about how life will be years from now, when these people have actual power to do something
for our nation and is it the artist 's job to protect them and be leaders? Most would criticise and

No matter the lyrics if the songwriter has a great enough fan base, the music will sell. This is the

The Role and Function of the Fool in King Lear
Explore the role and function of ‘The Fool' in ‘King Lear' The Fool in ‘King Lear' is a William
Shakespeare creation. Shakespeare has the ability to reveal a human character with an exceptional
use of language. He allows us to see more than just words on the paper; we're given a multi
dimensional insight into a character. Usually his characters aren't as straight–forward as black or
white, they are invariably more complex. Edmund for example, it's easy to present him as the villain
but Shakespeare also shows us a sorry side to him as he attempts an apology before he dies.
Shakespeare has given us concrete images of things that are inexpressible, such as love. To articulate

The Fool also likes to remind Lear that he has not only failed himself but his people too. ‘So out
went the candle and we were left darkling' Lear was the light of the state now he has abdicated the
light has gone out and he's let his people down by leaving them in the incapable hands of his two
daughters. Eventually the Fool gets a glimmer of hope back from Lear when he realises his
mistakes. ‘I did her wrong' he says about Cordelia. At this point the Fool switches back to being
light hearted as he realises stressing the point would only bring Lear down. Some critics say The
Fool is responsible for pushing Lear over the edge. I like to think it was necessary for Lear to go
through madness so he can truly appreciate the consequences of his actions. The Fool was helping
Lear to ‘see better'. Finally Lear's conscience catches up with him at least to an extent when he says
‘poor fool and knave I have one part in my heart that's sorry for thee.' The Fool's sarcasm is blunt
and hard hitting, just like Cordelia's truth was in the ‘love test'. ‘I am better than thou art now I am
a fool thou art nothing'. The Fool is one of the Truth tellers in the play. Cordelia and Kent being the
other two. However the fool doesn't get punished for it like the others do. This is mainly due to the
way he articulates himself and what traditionally the role of the fool is. The main role of the fool
was to entertain. Yet they

The Importance of George Wilson in The Great Gatsby Essay
The Importance of George Wilson in The Great Gatsby
F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is a superbly written and an intrinsically captivating novel
that deals with the decline of the American Dream and how vapid the upper class is. To illustrate and
capture the essence of these themes, Fitzgerald uses characters Gatsby, who epitomizes the actual
American Dream, and Daisy, who is based on the ideal girl. Yet, as these characters grasp the topics
Fitzgerald wants to convey, there is something inherently like missing from the story as a whole. To
fill this void, Fitzgerald utilizes minor characters as a means to move the plot along, develop
characters further, and build upon the themes present in the novel. One such ... Show more content

The paradox here is that Tom is, in a sense, George himself as Tom's wife, Daisy, is in the process of
being taken away from him.
As seen with the aforementioned example, Wilson also plays a role that involves parallelism. His
situation parallels Tom's, as both have their wives being stolen. His situation parallels Gatsby's in
both their idealization of Myrtle and Daisy, respectively. Both of these patterns serve to emphasize
the character flaws in Tom and Gatsby and ultimately in the superficial lifestyle presented in the
novel.
While all previous cases of Wilson have been employed as a means of further developing characters.
Complementing this role, Wilson also plays a noteworthy part in plot development. Following the
death of Myrtle, who Daisy, in fact, killed, Wilson learns of Myrtle's affair. However, through his
own odd logic, Wilson comes to believe that Myrtle was running out to see her lover, when in fact
she was running away from Wilson himself.
`Beat me!' he heard her cry. `Throw me down and beat me you dirty little coward!' A moment later
she rushed out into the dusk waving her hands and shouting; before he could move from his door the
business was over. The `death car' as the newspapers called it, didn't stop; it came out of the
gathering darkness, wavered tragically for a moment and then

Oedipus Rex – The Women Essay
Oedipus Rex – The Women
Charles Segal in Oedipus Tyrannus: Tragic Heroism and the Limits of Knowledge explains the
protagonist's concern for Jocasta's burial in Sophocles' Oedipus Rex:
Oedipus turns from his utter desolation and abasement to something of his old air of command,
albeit in a chastened and softened tone. He asks Creon to expel him from Thebes as quickly as he
can and gives orders for Jocasta's burial (1446ff), a gesture of concern and responsibility
characteristic of the Oedipus we saw in the opening scenes(73).
Oedipus' attitude toward Jocasta in death – is it the same as in life? This essay will answer the
previous question and many other questions regarding women in Oedipus Rex. ... Show more

The critic Ehrenberg warns that it "may lead to 'hubris'" (74–75). Throughout the drama Sophocles
draws out an ongoing contrast between the "godlike mastery" of the king and the softer, more
balanced and selfless characteristics of Jocasta, his wife. She is a foil to Oedipus. Shortly thereafter
Creon, Jocasta's brother, is returning from the Delphic oracle with the fateful words of the god's
command: "He fell; and now the god's command is plain: /Punish his takers–off, whoe'er they be."
Immediately Oedipus boldly launches a campaign to do what is best for his people and for himself:
I also, as is meet, will lend my aid
To avenge this wrong to Thebes and to the god.
Not for some far–off kinsman, but myself,
Shall I expel this poison in the blood;
For whoso slew that king might have a mind
To strike me too with his assassin hand.
Oedipus, in his public proclamation regarding punishment for the killer of King Laius, shows more
lenient treatment toward the guilty party if he confesses his crime: "I summon him to make clean
shrift to me./And if he shrinks, let him reflect that thus /Confessing he shall 'scape the capital
charge". Oedipus, in his cross–examination of the holy man Teiresias, shows his mastery to be more
human and less godlike: "Monster! thy silence would incense a flint. /Will nothing loose thy tongue?
Can nothing melt thee, /Or shake thy dogged taciturnity?" The king is confronted with Teiresias'

Symbols in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Essay
The Great Gatsby is one of the most read pieces of literature throughout the current modern Western
world. High school kids all across the globe must learn and read it as part of their curriculum. One
of the aspects that makes this novel so notable is that Fitzgerald, at no point in the story, needs to
convey to his audience the theme of his novel directly. The main points of his novel are brought out
by the powerful symbols he infuses in the book. Not only does he use them to convey his theme, but
also ties them in to the rest of the story. Every aspect of this book is affected by the presence of one
of his symbols. Through the use of the green light, the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, and the Valley

Foremost, however, this light greatly influences the characterization of Gatsby. In Chapter 1, when
Gatsby reaches for the light, the reader becomes confused and does not know what to make of this
strange man oddly extending his arms while no one is around. After understanding Gatsby's past,
though, and knowing what it is he is reaching for, the reader can deduce much about Gatsby's
character from this action. By reaching out for his dream, Gatsby shows his determination to win
Daisy back; this solitary motion demonstrates his level of commitment to her. After realizing this,
the reader can also begin to associate more of Gatsby's actions, such as his gain of wealth, with the
American dream because it is understood that the quest for Daisy is closely tied in with this theme
(21). After this event with Gatsby, Fitzgerald chooses to focus on another peculiar object, Doctor
T.J. Eckleburg's eyes. It is this unusual amount of attention given to such a solitary entity that alerts
the reader that a deeper meaning may exist than what the author expresses. Another major symbol in
this novel is the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg. These are a pair of spectacles painted on an old
billboard in the Valley of Ashes. The significant aspect is that this symbol only has meaning when
other characters instill it with meaning. The eyes represent a higher power looking over the

In the film's final scene the two meet up and are free from their life of isolation, law, hate, and
racism. The film has some additional storytelling that I would like to discuss. The Shawshank
Redemption is done in chronological order, but there are some parts when the characters flash back
to earlier times in their live so you can understand what is happening in the film. This is done so the
viewer still has an easy way to follow the movie. The characters of the film face both internal and
external conflict. The internal conflict is should I continue this life when I know I am innocent, and
the external conflict is from the prison, the prisoners, and the prison staff. The film does contain
symbolism. An example of the symbolism is when the warden learns of his fate and his last
judgment by reading the morning newspaper of himself and the prison being corrupt. Additionally,
symbolism is used with the holy bible the warden reads; when he finds the hammer that Andy uses
to dig out of the prison. There is a passage from Exodus that is used to symbolize the warden's
salvation and Andy's escape. Also, there is a metaphor that I remember and it happens when the
librarian (Brooks Hatlen) is freed from jail and he takes his own life. At the same time he hangs
himself his bird (Jake) fly's away and is freed. The metaphor is that the librarian is free of his
lifelong nightmare of being told what

The Common Man In Robert Bolt's A Man For All Seasons
In the opening lines of A Man for All Seasons by Robert Bolt, the Common Man proclaims, "It is
perverse! To start a play made up of Kings and Cardinals in speaking costumes and intellectuals
with embroidered mouths, with me" (3). The Common Man cannot believe that Bolt is choosing to
start off a play of Kings and Cardinals with a man such as himself. He does not believe he, a
Common Man, is worthy of this role. Within these opening lines the reader is faced with a question,
why did Bolt chose to allow the Common Man to begin the play? Bolt is attempting to make a point
about the presence of ordinariness and conformity, using Kings and Cardinals as an example of
characters who attempt to rise above and try to make a difference.
To begin, the play opens with a monologue by the Common Man. Bolt introduces the Common Man
in the opening lines with a monologue to show that the actions of the Common Man are important to
the play. To further justify the Common Mans purpose in the play; Bolt makes the Common Man a
narrator for the play. The Common Man takes on roles similar to a narrator by re–explaining scenes
and finding ways to engage the audience. Continuing within the first few opening lines, the audience
learns about the Common Man's basket of costumes and props that he uses to carry out his various
roles in the play, "(Backing towards the basket) Well, for a proposition of my own, I need a costume.
(Take out and puts on the coat and hat of Steward) Matthew! The Household of Steward of Sir
Thomas More!" (3). This basket introduces not only all the roles the Common Man has throughout
the play but it also signifies his importance to the play within just the first few pages. No other
character was chosen to play multiple roles in this play. Bolt chose to give the Common Man these
extra roles and narrator position because he knew he would be able to conform to such roles.
As well as pointing out the Common Man's multitude of roles in the play, Bolt also distinguishes the
Common Man's ability to make choices that go against his moral compass in order to stay alive,
unlike More. The contrast between More's willingness to die for what he believes in, and the
Common Man's unwillingness to stand up for anything at all,

How Feudalism Played A Major Role With State And The...

British Literature I

"In a feudal system, a peasant or worker known as a vassal received a piece of land in return for
serving a lord or king, especially during times of war." (Feudal System) During the Middle Ages and
other parts of modern Europe, through texts, we can see how feudalism played a major role with
state and the government. Kings looked at it as "higher authority" and have more control over the
knights, nobles, and peasants that lie within that system. Though kings have more of a physical
control throughout these texts, I believe the queens have more manipulative power. In Marie de
France's short story, "Lanval", it is obvious that the state was in control of many lives. Throughout

Later in the story, the reader experiences the power of the queen when Lanval denies her offer to
love him.
"The Queen saw him go off alone, And she headed straight for that knight. She sat near him, she
called him over,
She spoke as her heart would move her:
'Lanval, I really do respect you,
I really care, I really love,
And you can have all my love." ("France" 393–399)
The queen began to accuse Lanval of being gay because he had never had a woman show him
pleasure. Suddenly, Lanval admits that he is in love with someone else who would be far better than
the queen herself, which sent the queen away crying. Soon afterwards, Lanval was commanded to
appear in court without delay. The Queen's assertive power was shown by her ability to punish
innocent people, meaning she obviously got what she wanted regardless of whether it was right or
not. The negative characteristics of the king are shown in "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight". The
descriptions the author uses to describe King Author and the descriptions used at the end of the story

A Comparison of Individual Responsibility in Oedipus Rex...
Individual Responsibility in Oedipus Rex and A Doll's House
In Sophocles' Oedipus Rex and Ibsen's A Doll's House, the main characters – Nora and Oedipus, are
both constructed to illustrate flaws in society. Oedipus' psychological evolution sees him begin as an
all–powerful, righteous king, who seemingly through no fault of his own murders his father and
marries his mother. His evolution ends with his self–blinding, an action which Sophocles' uses to
establish the true freedom of the individual before divine authority. In A Doll's House, the
development of Nora Helmer leads her from believing that she is happily married to realizing that
she is a mere possession for her husband's entertainment. By her decision at the end of the ... Show

Instead of dismissing the concerns of his citizens, Oedipus shows that he is in touch with the needs
of the common man. He professes that his spirit grieves for the city, for himself, and for all the
people [ln. 76]. He further goes on to say that he has already taken measures to isolate a cure by
sending his brother–in–law Creon to the Oracle at Delphi to receive a prophetic vision. The response
Creon returns with is that the source of the plague is within Thebes itself, in the form of the
murderer of Laius, Thebes' former king. In Ancient Greece, the Oracle was a means by which
mankind was able to communicate with the gods. Oedipus' decision to immediately send a
messenger (in the form of Creon) to the Oracle is appropriate because since the King was considered
to be "first of men," he should therefore be the first to undertake the initiative to contact the gods.
This concept of being the only source of hope is re–enforced throughout the play not only by
Oedipus' own statements such as "I acted at once" [ln. 81] but also by his anticipation of advice and
suggestions.3 In the opening scene, the priest refers to Oedipus as "a man of experience.4"

These qualities can easily be heard through Berry's first verse, starting at 25 seconds into the song.
Berry harmonizes well with his backup singers, and is clearly comprehensible throughout the whole
passage. On the contrary, Ely's voice sounds unrehearsed and often as if he is yelling the song rather
than singing it. Ely's voice is often masked by the instrumentation, and incomprehensible at some
points. These characteristics can be noted clearly at the one minute mark of the video, at this point
Ely sounds as if though he is yelling, is masked by the instrumentation, and cannot easily be
understood. Berry clearly enunciates his speech while Ely slurs his words and varies in volume
throughout the song. Part of these differentiations could be due to the fact that The Kingsmen were a
"garage band," they had little formal training and recorded on simple equipment, potentially leading
to the rough sound of Ely's voice. The multiple differences between Berry and Ely's voices give rise
to a distinct sound for each version.
Lyrically, the verses of both of these songs are very similar, while the choruses are more different.
Both versions feature imperfect grammar, using phrases such as "Me catch a ship across the sea,"
instead of "I catch a ship." This substitution of "me" for "I" can be heard multiple times throughout
both versions of the song. The lyrics used in the verses of The Kingsmen's cover are nearly identical
to the lyrics used in Berry's original version. The

Essay about Sight and Blindness in Oedipus Rex
Sight and Blindness in Oedipus Rex
Oedipus Rex is a play about the way we blind ourselves to painful truths that we can't bear to see.
Physical sight and blindness are used throughout the play, often ironically, as a metaphor for mental
sight and blindness. The play ends with the hero Oedipus literally blinding himself to avoid seeing
the result of his terrible fate. But as the play demonstrates, Oedipus, the man who killed his father
and impregnated his mother, has been blind all along, and is partly responsible for his own
blindness. When the play opens, the people of the town are asking Oedipus for help. A curse has
been cast upon the city and the only way to remove it, is to find the murderer of the last king, Laios.

It is ironic that the one individual, who comes to help the city, is the individual that has been the
cause of the curse. Oedipus is the illness. Oedipus and Jocasta both don't want to see the truth.
Although it may occur to them at some point, but they don't give it a second thought because they
think it is absurd and it isn't possible. "Why should anyone in this world be afraid, since fate rules us
and nothing van be forseen? A man should live only for the present day. Have no more fear of
sleeping with your mother: How many men, in dreams, have lain with their mothers! No reasonable
man is troubled by such things." Jocasta is further from believing than Oedipus, she constantly tells
him not to worry about it, don't get worked up, and to just forget what you were told. Oedipus
cannot forget what the oracle has said and goes on to pursue the case.
Through the course of the play Oedipus is the detective, the judge, and the jury. He investigates,
decides a verdict, and carries out his own punishment. When Tiresias arrives at Thebes Oedipus
questions him looking for answers. Tiresias is a blind man, who ironically can see the future and
truths of people's lives. It is Tiresias who is the first person to tell Oedipus that he has killed his own
father. He tells Oedipus "you do not see the evil in which you live." Oedipus doubts Tiresias' ability
to see the truths because of his physical blindness and states, " You

operates several fast food brands in Australia. KFC is the major brand that Yum runs. The main
product of KFC is made by chicken meat. Therefore, the strength and the weakness of KFC are
obviously. People who like chicken meat will highly be attracted by KFC. However, it gives
customer who like fast food a limited choice. Just use the one kind of meat will make the brand to
be more professional. But it also will narrow its potential markets.
3. Value creation:
Value creation means increase the value of products, service and even business to meet the
customers' needs and requirements so that they can get competitive advantages. (Business Fundas,
2012) As we analyzed, fast food industry's threat of new entrants is low and the availability of
substitutes is high. It's a fare market which the buyers have strong powers.
The main value created by Red Rooster is its intangible assets like brand loyalty and goodwill. It's
the only wholly Australian owned chicken brand which can meet the local needs more and get more
support from Australians. (Red Rooster, 2013) Another value of Red Rooster is its health concept. It
used oven roasted chicken chain to make the benefits increase from 16% to 30% on the financial
year. (Frchanise business, 2006) Red Rooster reduces the 40% of fat absorption of the chicken.
(Matt Paish,2011) The health quality of food gives a huge competitive advantage for Red Rooster.
Besides, to create the value, some new and cheap

Historical, Social and Political Issues in the movie FREEDOM WRITERS The thorough
presentation of a well researched context in the film provided the environment for priming the
viewers on the concept of belonging which was highlighted in the film. This grounded the film and
prepared the viewers on the film's main focus. Through the brief but meaningful snippets of what
happened during the trial of Rodney King, the viewers were introduced to the conflict used in the
film that surfaced and distinctly placed attention on the concept of belonging. In the film, the
Freedom Writers were made following the Rodney King trial in 1992 and the OJ Simpson murder
case in 1994. These trials brought out the sensitive issues about injustices ... Show more content on

This summed up their sense of belonging, ensured by having their own territory and being with their
own race. The need for belonging stemmed from their perception and actual experiences not only in
school but the community as a whole. There was always the fight for one's own turf. This was
emphasized during this scene that showed the two Latinos who had to run from the group of
Cambodians who were chasing them and the attack on these Latinos that necessitated them to split
up. Unfortunately the woman made a wrong turn and bumped into another group which caused her
to be physically harmed. This scene highlighted that though they belonged to one community, they
did not quite see themselves as part of that community and sub–groups or tribes abounded because it
was in these smaller groups that they found security. They needed to form groups based on their race
and color. They stuck together and supported each other because they found comfort from one
another just like members of a family caring for each other. They became so distrusting of other
groups because of the past painful events that happened in their lives. Every race needed to establish
that they were not inferior over the others. But all of these initial behavior and attitude changed
because their English teacher paved the way for them to trust and support each other. As Eva said

Comparing The Bandar-Log In The Jungle Books
How are the Bandar–log in The Jungle Books by Rudyard Kipling, similar to bullies in the twenty–
first century today? In The Jungle Books, the Bandar–log is a group or tribe of monkeys who are
outcasts to the Jungle–People. The Bandar–log are basically outcasts to the Jungle people because
the Bandar–log are more like humans than animals to the Jungle people. Bullies are also outcasts, so
since bullies are outcasts they bully or basically torment another person.
The Bandar–log are compared to bullies because of the way they talk. The Bandar–log talk with lie.
In the Jungle Book, Bagheera says to Mowgli, "They lie. They have always lied.'' This quote proves
that the monkey people talk of nothing but lies. Bullies also talk with lies. Bullies

Larc Blackwood Persuasive Speech
A WORLD ON FIRE
Prologe "Good afternoon fellow leaders!" projected Larc Blackwood, "I have all called you here
today to propose an idea that can truly end all wars and national conflicts throughout the world!"
The other politicians and world leaders snickered and whispered their doubts to one another, a few
hopeful youths always proposed a "way to end all conflicts" a few times a year but they were always
cast aside as futile attempt at something that could never be obtained, true world peace. "And how
do we know your idea will be so different from all the others we've heard?" asked Wilson
Brightland. A sudden hush fell across the room, Wilson Brightland was the leader of one of the most
powerful nations known as Ultras and his voice carried much influence. He was six and half feet and
250 pounds of pure muscle and raw leadership, he rose through his countries ranks with prejudice
speed and assumed the High Graceship when he was only 28, the youngest to have ever
accomplished such a fet. His glare made Blackwood hesitate, but he carried on in his usual
commanding manner, "I propose that rather than waring with each other and progressively making
ourselves weaker, we all unite under one common banner, with one king chosen by the council, to
rule over the world as one unified nation!" There was a long pause. One minute went by, then slowly
a second one followed. A bead of sweat started to form on Blackwood's face. He feared that they
thought him crazy, that his idea would be cast aside like the others, but luckily a fat king ... Show

Jungle Monkeys Essays
The monkeys of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book are a very unique group of characters. They are
viewed by the other animals of the jungle, or the Jungle People as they call themselves, as outcasts
and outlaws. The most prominent chapter they occur in, "Kaa's Hunting", shows their lawless,
shiftless, and uncivilized way of life. This image in itself does not give off any racist undertone.
However, Disney's adaption of The Jungle Book carries this view of the monkeys, while also giving
them strong attributes that are commonly associated with African–Americans. In Kipling's original
version of The Jungle Book, the jungle monkeys make their first prominent appearance in the
chapter "Kaa's Hunting". The young boy Mowgli speaks of the jungle ... Show more content on

Disney's version of the book keeps the negative attitude towards the jungle monkeys presented in
the original story. However, it is in Disney's film adaptation that ties explicit attributes frequently
affiliated with African–Americans to the Bandar–Log. Like in the Kipling's original story, the
monkeys kidnap Mowgli and take him to their temple confines. One of the first differences between
the book and the movie is presented when Mowgli is introduced to the monkey leader King Louie,
whose voice acting is done by the jazz singer Louie Prima (The Jungle Book). As previously
mentioned, in the original story of The Jungle Book the monkey people are leader–less. The choice
of Louis Prima as the voice actor for King Louie is a significant selection. Louis Prima was a
famous swing and jazz singer from New Orleans in the mid 20th century. Although Louie Prima was
Caucasian, the jazz and swing genre of music is predominantly considered an African–American art
form. His musical style, which included a harsh, raspy voice and scat singing, was greatly
influenced by the famous African–American jazz singer Louie Armstrong. Louie Prima implements
this musical style in King Louie's character as he even scats when he sings with Baloo. King Louie
also uses phrases usually found in African–American Vernacular English, such as "I'll lay it on the
line for ya," "Cool it," and "Craaaazy" (The Jungle Book).

The Lion King Analysis

  • 1. The Lion King Analysis Many people after watching the movie, "The Lion King," directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, thought it was based off of the legend of Sundiata by his griot. People said "He was The Lion King of Mali." His life was just like Simba's. Nare Maghann Konate who was the father, and Sogolon Conde who was the mother, got married and Sundiata Keita was born. He learned about the land and where he lived. As he grows up, he gets his own griot. Soon, Nare Maghann Konate dies. Sundiata's exile was planned to run away and grow older in a different place somewhere else. He started learning about the land he was currently in. During this period of time, Soumaoro Kante took over Niana. A search party was sent out looking for Sundiata. One of the village members found him and told him Soumaoro has taken control over where he used to live. Shortly after the find, Sundiata returns with an army, ready to fight the other army that Soumaoro put ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. Essay about Arthurian Legends Effects on English Society What role did the great King Arthur play in the way English Literature is perceived? Did King Arthur honestly exist? "Whether King Arthur existed or not is doubtful. However if King Arthur did exist, then he would have lived sometime between 400 AD and 600 AD, a time of turmoil in Britain following the Roman withdrawl. And a time when written literature did not exist, therefore events during this period are only known about from folklore passed down several generations before being written down, or from modern archeology giving insights from excavations of sites. If there was ever a true King Arthur in history, he would probably be Romano–British warleader, probably named Artorius, which is a Roman name for Arthur. Though the Roman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Arthurian Legends were an effect of the Romantic Era and resulted in abstract thinking, as well as the arts including music, painting, poetry, and writing. The birth of the Arthurian Legends came from Celtic mythology and medieval romance, while the existence of magic confirms the conception of artistic intellect. Whether or not King Arthur truly existed, his influence dramatically changed the English society and English Literature to its current form (Arthurian Legends Vol. 1). The Arthurian Legend is seen to be extremely influential in benefitting the English people during the Romantic Era. Even if King Arthur is a fictional character of myth and legend in England, his childhood, countless glories and achievements as the king of Camelot, and the final down fall of his strong empire validated his importance to English literature. Proof of King Arthur's existence would possibly solidify the impact he had on the English culture (Arthurian Legends Vol. 1). The early childhood of King Arthur seems to be the foundation of the epic journey of his life. Even though his achievements as a child were brief, they were extremely important to King Arthur's outlook on life, as well as character. As an optimistic squire, King Arthur had hopes of one day overcoming his social standing. He received his wish when he unknowingly pulled the magical sword out of the stone. ... Jack Ely starts singing the second verse too early and stopped himself short, creating a gap that drummer Lynn Easton smoothly filled with a clever drum fill. The Great Gatsby- Color Symbolism The Power of Color Colors are used many different ways by many different people, but are used mainly as a reflection of the way one feels or his or her own personality. This idea is depicted through the different characters created in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, set in the post– World War I era. The novel evinces the major themes through the use and explanation of many diverse colors. Jay Gatsby, the most significant character in the story, leads a very materialistic lifestyle. Hoping to gain back his old love, Daisy, Gatsby uses his money to impress her, hopefully leading to their settling down together. Daisy's second cousin once removed, Nick Carraway, is the link that helps to connect Gatsby and Daisy. Nick "deliberately ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Caught in the romantic atmosphere of the night, Nick puts "[his] arm around Jordan's golden shoulder" (Fitzgerald 79). Both description serve to symbolize the fact that she is happy and quite valuable, as of now, to Nick. While gold and silver are two valuable colors to the characters, gray symbolizes the corruption behind the money. One depressing color that is quite significant to the story happens to be the very dull gray. Gray represents the neutral, dull and corrupt society that resides in America. It is seen, through some of the structures, that corruption has made a big impact on everyone surrounding them. One such structure, that is only mentioned briefly, is the villages in France. When Nick first meets and talks to Gatsby, they bring up how both men look familiar to one another. Ironically, they both took part in some section of World War I, Gatsby, in the "ninth machine–gun battalion," and Nick, in the "Seventh Infantry" (Fitzgerald 47). During the quick recapitulation of the war, "[they] talked for a moment about some wet, gray little villages in France" (Fitzgerald 47). These villages represent the corruption and destruction that the war has brought to the people and society of France. Another gray structure is the windows at Gatsby house. Even though Gatsby is a man of money and success, "the gray windows" on his home signify that this happiness is just a facade, and that in reality, there is much fraudulence hidden within Gatsby ... • 9. Fitzgerald’s Use of Color in the Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, The Great Gatsby, exposes the corruption and greed of the Roaring Twenties. Fitzgerald is able to captivate readers' attentions through his employment of color symbolism. Fitzgerald portrays important messages in the novel by his symbolic use of colors. Colors play an important role in Fitzgerald's descriptions of the lives of Jay Gatsby, Nick Carraway and many of the other characters in the novel. Fitzgerald uses the colors white, yellow, and green to express certain sentiments to the reader, commenting what is going on in the story. Fitzgerald uses the color white to symbolize purity and innocence, while yellow is used to symbolize moral decay, and death. Green is used to represent hope and ... While Gatsby attempts to hide his dishonesty, Nick, considers himself "one of the few honest people that I have ever known" (Fitzgerald, 59) and Fitzgerald often describes him as wearing white. The first time he attends one of Gatsby's infamous parties, he wears a white flannel suit. Nick is aware of the importance of this event, being formally invited to one of Gatsby's parties, and wants to project the right image. His white suit emulates honesty and the appearance of being untainted. Similar to white projecting honesty and purity, Fitzgerald also uses it to symbolize perfection. Daisy, always in white, was perfect in Gatsby's eyes. He lived his life around her, in order to reclaim her. Just as Daisy's whiteness symbolized perfection to Gatsby, the white world of the upper class was the epitome of perfection for Myrtle Wilson, Tom's mistress. To Myrtle, the perfect life would be to live like Daisy, to be wealthy. Although she lives in the valley of ashes as the wife of a garage owner, she feels she belongs with the upper class. She stakes claim in high society through Tom, but will never be fully able to gain access to their elite world. Fitzgerald shows her attempt to become "white" through her clothing. • 11. Critical Analysis of a Passage from Horace Walpole's... Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto, is acknowledged by many as the first gothic novel. It was the first of it's kind and many of the conventions used by Walpole, which put it in a literary genre of it's own, were continued by authors such as Ann Radcliffe and Matthew Lewis. Many of these defining characteristics can be seen within the very first few pages of the text and for the purposes of this essay, to identify some of these conventions used and the relevance of this text to modernity I shall focus this analysis on the passage between pages twenty–four and twenty–six from the Oxford World's Classics edition. The gothic novel emerged during the late eighteenth century and the 'Age of Enlightenment', which emphasised rationality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Otranto, Walpole challenges his societies views of modernity and transgresses social laws by introducing the theme of incest into his novel with Manfred preying of his deceased son's betrothed, Isabella. This brings into play three defining features which became prevalent within gothic novels of the late eighteenth century: women in distress; women being threatened by powerful males; and the major theme of fear and in this example, specifically female fear. Isabella, a young, virginal woman becomes "half dead with fright" when faced with potential rape and becoming a spoiled woman at the hands of the powerful and threatening Manfred. Such suggestions, by Walpole's age were seen as scandalous and caused moral outrage, a thread that was carried through the gothic genre. This new genre may have provided for many, an escape from the rigid world of enlightenment. It brought to them a world of imagination and allowed them to immerse themselves in a world which had been morally forbidden and they could do it from the privacy of their own homes, allowing their indulgence, and perhaps, immoral thoughts to go unnoticed, providing a way for the darkness and immoral thoughts to come alive outside of the novel. At the end of the novel however, society's moral ideals surface as Manfred retires to a convent after the realisation of his sins and order is restored. In this way, although Walpole is exposing his readers to these ideas, he would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It takes high risks and a lot of vitality to overcome oppression. In Martin Luther King's essay, "The Ways of Oppression," there are three distinct ways on how to deal with oppression, which are acquiescence, violence, and non–violent resistance. All of these strategies of dealing with oppression are established in both the film and novel adaptation of the "Unbroken," as Louie Zamperini spends many years as a POW in Japan enduring cruel oppression. Throughout the story, the three strategies alternate amongst Louie and his fellow POWs, however, towards the end it's clear that non–violent resistance is the most successful form of overcoming oppression because it makes Louie the bigger man in learning how to forgive and understand more openly. The first way of dealing with oppression King mentions in his essay is acquiescence. He describes the acquiescence method as the oppressor becoming accustomed to the unjust treatment. In the novel, Unbroken, it became a daily routine for the men to carry tons of coal on their backs. "They pushed aboard one another, and the hauling went on, punishing their bodies and numbing their minds" (187). This shows how Louie and his fellow POWs grew accustomed to the painful labor their endured at the camp. Spousal Relationships in Macbeth and Oedipus the King Essay In Macbeth, by William Shakesphere, and Oedipus the King by Sophocles, the spousal relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, and Oedipus and Jocasta, play a major role in the events that lead to the tragedy. Their love, respect, and determination for each other reveal the nature of the relationship shared by them. In Macbeth, the bond between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is strong. For instance, when he first hears the prophecy from the three weird sisters, he immediately writes to Lady Macbeth informing her about the prophecies. It is Jocasta who tries to stop him from jumping into decisions without thinking about the outcome. For instance, when Oedipus accuses Creon and Tiresias for treachery, Jocasta tries to reason out with Oedipus. She tells him to not to believe in prophecies as they are not true. She narrates to Oedipus the tale of the prophecy of her son that he would one day kill his own father (Laius). She further tells him that the prophecy never came true because her son was killed when he was a child and that Laius was killed by a group of thieves. Wealth can be such a strong impact on someone that can determine whether they're selfish or a given person. Wealth can definitely be overpowering and misleading, which could portray their true identity. In the historical fiction novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it shows us how misleading wealth can be in a person's life. One of the reasons why wealth is involved in Gatsby's life is because he is spending his own money on things that aren't necessary. This example shows how Tom and Daisy are manipulated into thinking that money can solve any issue. Furthermore, Wealth can make someone feel determined. Gatsby was determined to get Daisy, and the only way to get Daisy was to become wealthy. To represent Gatsby's interception of becoming wealthy, this quote symbolizes his determination and beginning to a happier life; "To Young Gatz, resting on his oars and looking up at the railed deck, that yacht represented all the beauty and glamour in the world" (100). But I would also argue that she entailed evil to fuel her sleeping ambition that would make her nemesis, her mental collapse, fully justified. Lady Macbeth's role as a supporting wife at the start of the play exceeds the duties of a 'normal' wife. She is the 'Eve' to Macbeth's 'Adam' and is tempted. Although I have expressed unsympathetic views about Lady Macbeth, I do feel that a certain amount of sympathy arises from Act 5 Scene 1, which tends to hide her previous evil deeds. Lady Macbeth has not been seen by the audience for some time, this is because Macbeth has shut her out of his life and she has become isolated and lonely. Lady Macbeth's mental collapse is caused by her acknowledgement of her share of guilt and is expressed by images of Duncan's blood, "...will these hands ne'er be clean?..." This is also a contrast to her belief that water cleanses the conscience of any guilt. Lady Macbeth's mental collapse reinforces the idea of Scotland being diseased under Macbeth's reign and because he was not put their by divine right he cannot cure her. Lady Macbeth's role as a supporting wife resurfaces again in scene 5. She is now afraid of the dark, which is in contrasts to her earlier wishes for darkness to conceal the murder. At this point of the scene it can be clearly noticed how similar Goneril and Regan are, as Regan asks Lear to measure her worth as he measured Goneril's. This closeness seems symbolic in a way to the close–knit coven in Macbeth, as these women seem to have underlying deceptive qualities. Before considering Cordelia's answer to Lear, we must note her comments made during Goneril and Regan's 'speeches'. This is keen use of the aside speech by Shakespeare as the audience would be able to hear Cordelia's confusion over what her response shall be and her truthful belief that her love is more ponderous than her tongue. Her indecision over what to say to her father shows really how much she does not want to offend him, but instead she does the opposite, as he cannot see beyond his pride, to her loyal words. When she says "Nothing", she is indicating to him that he should no the worth of her love for him. The king, shocked with this appearance of ingratitude in his favourite child, desired her to consider her words, and to mend her speech, lest it should mar her fortunes. Cordelia then tells Lear that she loves him according to her station, and as much as he loves her as his daughter. She is as she says "young...and true". Indirect characterization in the form of Lear's mad speeches allows Shakespeare to convey the theme of madness. Medieval Outlaw Definitions The most obvious thing that stood out to me after watching these two videos, is that history seems to be notorious for being rewritten and misconstrued every step of the way. The first video I watched addressed some of the modern misinterpretations of the medieval outlaw. It was abundantly clear that the heroic and chivalrous we have of Robin Hood and other noble outliers of justice is a highly romanticized and inaccurate depiction of these outlaws. Through the years of the medieval age, the term outlaw took on many varying legal definitions. In certain communities and under their current laws being declared an outcast was an extremely serious and polarizing title. Then as the laws of the land began to shift, it was quite common being stated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are millions of songs and hundreds of ways to listen to them, a person is constantly absorbing information, whether it is consciously or subconsciously. If someone was to constantly allow his subconscious to be filled with violence it would affect his day to day life, and if everyone allows their world to be filled with hateful, violent, misogynistic influences it will affect the overall societal values of our society. The future is held in the hands of a generation that is constantly being fed words of hate, what does that say about how life will be years from now, when these people have actual power to do something for our nation and is it the artist 's job to protect them and be leaders? Most would criticise and blame musicians but it 's their art, their emotions but listeners shouldn't be allowed to censor it. No matter the lyrics if the songwriter has a great enough fan base, the music will sell. This is the case for so many mainstream artist today. The words are nothing but hateful but the albums fly off the shelfs in hopes that the new album will be as good as the last. Old artists such as Eminem, Nicki Minaj, and Beyonce have built a fanbase that would support them through any career decisions they make. • 44. The Role and Function of the Fool in King Lear Explore the role and function of ‘The Fool' in ‘King Lear' The Fool in ‘King Lear' is a William Shakespeare creation. Shakespeare has the ability to reveal a human character with an exceptional use of language. He allows us to see more than just words on the paper; we're given a multi dimensional insight into a character. Usually his characters aren't as straight–forward as black or white, they are invariably more complex. Edmund for example, it's easy to present him as the villain but Shakespeare also shows us a sorry side to him as he attempts an apology before he dies. Shakespeare has given us concrete images of things that are inexpressible, such as love. To articulate a multi– faceted view of a person and present it concisely with ... The Fool also likes to remind Lear that he has not only failed himself but his people too. ‘So out went the candle and we were left darkling' Lear was the light of the state now he has abdicated the light has gone out and he's let his people down by leaving them in the incapable hands of his two daughters. Eventually the Fool gets a glimmer of hope back from Lear when he realises his mistakes. ‘I did her wrong' he says about Cordelia. At this point the Fool switches back to being light hearted as he realises stressing the point would only bring Lear down. Some critics say The Fool is responsible for pushing Lear over the edge. I like to think it was necessary for Lear to go through madness so he can truly appreciate the consequences of his actions. The Fool was helping Lear to ‘see better'. Finally Lear's conscience catches up with him at least to an extent when he says ‘poor fool and knave I have one part in my heart that's sorry for thee.' The Fool's sarcasm is blunt and hard hitting, just like Cordelia's truth was in the ‘love test'. ‘I am better than thou art now I am a fool thou art nothing'. The Fool is one of the Truth tellers in the play. Cordelia and Kent being the other two. However the fool doesn't get punished for it like the others do. This is mainly due to the way he articulates himself and what traditionally the role of the fool is. The main role of the fool was to entertain. Yet they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 46. The Importance of George Wilson in The Great Gatsby Essay The Importance of George Wilson in The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is a superbly written and an intrinsically captivating novel that deals with the decline of the American Dream and how vapid the upper class is. To illustrate and capture the essence of these themes, Fitzgerald uses characters Gatsby, who epitomizes the actual American Dream, and Daisy, who is based on the ideal girl. Yet, as these characters grasp the topics Fitzgerald wants to convey, there is something inherently like missing from the story as a whole. To fill this void, Fitzgerald utilizes minor characters as a means to move the plot along, develop characters further, and build upon the themes present in the novel. One such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The paradox here is that Tom is, in a sense, George himself as Tom's wife, Daisy, is in the process of being taken away from him. As seen with the aforementioned example, Wilson also plays a role that involves parallelism. His situation parallels Tom's, as both have their wives being stolen. His situation parallels Gatsby's in both their idealization of Myrtle and Daisy, respectively. Both of these patterns serve to emphasize the character flaws in Tom and Gatsby and ultimately in the superficial lifestyle presented in the novel. While all previous cases of Wilson have been employed as a means of further developing characters. Complementing this role, Wilson also plays a noteworthy part in plot development. Following the death of Myrtle, who Daisy, in fact, killed, Wilson learns of Myrtle's affair. However, through his own odd logic, Wilson comes to believe that Myrtle was running out to see her lover, when in fact she was running away from Wilson himself. `Beat me!' he heard her cry. `Throw me down and beat me you dirty little coward!' A moment later she rushed out into the dusk waving her hands and shouting; before he could move from his door the business was over. Oedipus Rex – The Women Essay Oedipus Rex – The Women Charles Segal in Oedipus Tyrannus: Tragic Heroism and the Limits of Knowledge explains the protagonist's concern for Jocasta's burial in Sophocles' Oedipus Rex: Oedipus turns from his utter desolation and abasement to something of his old air of command, albeit in a chastened and softened tone. He asks Creon to expel him from Thebes as quickly as he can and gives orders for Jocasta's burial (1446ff), a gesture of concern and responsibility characteristic of the Oedipus we saw in the opening scenes(73). Throughout the drama Sophocles draws out an ongoing contrast between the "godlike mastery" of the king and the softer, more balanced and selfless characteristics of Jocasta, his wife. She is a foil to Oedipus. Shortly thereafter Creon, Jocasta's brother, is returning from the Delphic oracle with the fateful words of the god's command: "He fell; and now the god's command is plain: /Punish his takers–off, whoe'er they be." Immediately Oedipus boldly launches a campaign to do what is best for his people and for himself: I also, as is meet, will lend my aid To avenge this wrong to Thebes and to the god. Not for some far–off kinsman, but myself, Shall I expel this poison in the blood; For whoso slew that king might have a mind To strike me too with his assassin hand. High school kids all across the globe must learn and read it as part of their curriculum. One of the aspects that makes this novel so notable is that Fitzgerald, at no point in the story, needs to convey to his audience the theme of his novel directly. The main points of his novel are brought out by the powerful symbols he infuses in the book. Not only does he use them to convey his theme, but also ties them in to the rest of the story. Every aspect of this book is affected by the presence of one of his symbols. Through the use of the green light, the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, and the Valley of the Ashes as symbols, ... In Chapter 1, when Gatsby reaches for the light, the reader becomes confused and does not know what to make of this strange man oddly extending his arms while no one is around. After understanding Gatsby's past, though, and knowing what it is he is reaching for, the reader can deduce much about Gatsby's character from this action. By reaching out for his dream, Gatsby shows his determination to win Daisy back; this solitary motion demonstrates his level of commitment to her. After realizing this, the reader can also begin to associate more of Gatsby's actions, such as his gain of wealth, with the American dream because it is understood that the quest for Daisy is closely tied in with this theme (21). After this event with Gatsby, Fitzgerald chooses to focus on another peculiar object, Doctor T.J. Eckleburg's eyes. It is this unusual amount of attention given to such a solitary entity that alerts the reader that a deeper meaning may exist than what the author expresses. Another major symbol in this novel is the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg. These are a pair of spectacles painted on an old billboard in the Valley of Ashes. He is sent to prison to serve a life term. Over the 20–years in prison, Andy retains optimism and eventually earns the respect of his fellow inmates. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the film's final scene the two meet up and are free from their life of isolation, law, hate, and racism. The film has some additional storytelling that I would like to discuss. The Shawshank Redemption is done in chronological order, but there are some parts when the characters flash back to earlier times in their live so you can understand what is happening in the film. This is done so the viewer still has an easy way to follow the movie. The characters of the film face both internal and external conflict. The internal conflict is should I continue this life when I know I am innocent, and the external conflict is from the prison, the prisoners, and the prison staff. The film does contain symbolism. An example of the symbolism is when the warden learns of his fate and his last judgment by reading the morning newspaper of himself and the prison being corrupt. Additionally, symbolism is used with the holy bible the warden reads; when he finds the hammer that Andy uses to dig out of the prison. There is a passage from Exodus that is used to symbolize the warden's salvation and Andy's escape. Also, there is a metaphor that I remember and it happens when the librarian (Brooks Hatlen) is freed from jail and he takes his own life. At the same time he hangs himself his bird (Jake) fly's away and is freed. The metaphor is that the librarian is free of his lifelong nightmare of being told what ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To start a play made up of Kings and Cardinals in speaking costumes and intellectuals with embroidered mouths, with me" (3). The Common Man cannot believe that Bolt is choosing to start off a play of Kings and Cardinals with a man such as himself. He does not believe he, a Common Man, is worthy of this role. Within these opening lines the reader is faced with a question, why did Bolt chose to allow the Common Man to begin the play? Bolt is attempting to make a point about the presence of ordinariness and conformity, using Kings and Cardinals as an example of characters who attempt to rise above and try to make a difference. To begin, the play opens with a monologue by the Common Man. Bolt introduces the Common Man in the opening lines with a monologue to show that the actions of the Common Man are important to the play. To further justify the Common Mans purpose in the play; Bolt makes the Common Man a narrator for the play. The Common Man takes on roles similar to a narrator by re–explaining scenes and finding ways to engage the audience. Continuing within the first few opening lines, the audience learns about the Common Man's basket of costumes and props that he uses to carry out his various roles in the play, "(Backing towards the basket) Well, for a proposition of my own, I need a costume. (Take out and puts on the coat and hat of Steward) Matthew! The Household of Steward of Sir Thomas More!" (3). This basket introduces not only all the roles the Common Man has throughout the play but it also signifies his importance to the play within just the first few pages. No other character was chosen to play multiple roles in this play. Bolt chose to give the Common Man these extra roles and narrator position because he knew he would be able to conform to such roles. As well as pointing out the Common Man's multitude of roles in the play, Bolt also distinguishes the Common Man's ability to make choices that go against his moral compass in order to stay alive, unlike More. Zachary Hayes British Literature I Dr. Dunnum 10/23/15 "In a feudal system, a peasant or worker known as a vassal received a piece of land in return for serving a lord or king, especially during times of war." (Feudal System) During the Middle Ages and other parts of modern Europe, through texts, we can see how feudalism played a major role with state and the government. Kings looked at it as "higher authority" and have more control over the knights, nobles, and peasants that lie within that system. Though kings have more of a physical control throughout these texts, I believe the queens have more manipulative power. ("France" 393–399) The queen began to accuse Lanval of being gay because he had never had a woman show him pleasure. Suddenly, Lanval admits that he is in love with someone else who would be far better than the queen herself, which sent the queen away crying. Soon afterwards, Lanval was commanded to appear in court without delay. The Queen's assertive power was shown by her ability to punish innocent people, meaning she obviously got what she wanted regardless of whether it was right or not. Individual Responsibility in Oedipus Rex and A Doll's House In Sophocles' Oedipus Rex and Ibsen's A Doll's House, the main characters – Nora and Oedipus, are both constructed to illustrate flaws in society. His evolution ends with his self–blinding, an action which Sophocles' uses to establish the true freedom of the individual before divine authority. The response Creon returns with is that the source of the plague is within Thebes itself, in the form of the murderer of Laius, Thebes' former king. In Ancient Greece, the Oracle was a means by which mankind was able to communicate with the gods. Oedipus' decision to immediately send a messenger (in the form of Creon) to the Oracle is appropriate because since the King was considered to be "first of men," he should therefore be the first to undertake the initiative to contact the gods. This concept of being the only source of hope is re–enforced throughout the play not only by Oedipus' own statements such as "I acted at once" [ln. 81] but also by his anticipation of advice and suggestions.3 In the opening scene, the priest refers to Oedipus as "a man of experience.4" Experience can only be gained by constant action. Berry harmonizes well with his backup singers, and is clearly comprehensible throughout the whole passage. On the contrary, Ely's voice sounds unrehearsed and often as if he is yelling the song rather than singing it. Ely's voice is often masked by the instrumentation, and incomprehensible at some points. These characteristics can be noted clearly at the one minute mark of the video, at this point Ely sounds as if though he is yelling, is masked by the instrumentation, and cannot easily be understood. Berry clearly enunciates his speech while Ely slurs his words and varies in volume throughout the song. Part of these differentiations could be due to the fact that The Kingsmen were a "garage band," they had little formal training and recorded on simple equipment, potentially leading to the rough sound of Ely's voice. The multiple differences between Berry and Ely's voices give rise to a distinct sound for each version. Lyrically, the verses of both of these songs are very similar, while the choruses are more different. Both versions feature imperfect grammar, using phrases such as "Me catch a ship across the sea," instead of "I catch a ship." Physical sight and blindness are used throughout the play, often ironically, as a metaphor for mental sight and blindness. The play ends with the hero Oedipus literally blinding himself to avoid seeing the result of his terrible fate. But as the play demonstrates, Oedipus, the man who killed his father and impregnated his mother, has been blind all along, and is partly responsible for his own blindness. Oedipus and Jocasta both don't want to see the truth. Although it may occur to them at some point, but they don't give it a second thought because they think it is absurd and it isn't possible. "Why should anyone in this world be afraid, since fate rules us and nothing van be forseen? A man should live only for the present day. Have no more fear of sleeping with your mother: How many men, in dreams, have lain with their mothers! No reasonable man is troubled by such things." Jocasta is further from believing than Oedipus, she constantly tells him not to worry about it, don't get worked up, and to just forget what you were told. Oedipus cannot forget what the oracle has said and goes on to pursue the case. Through the course of the play Oedipus is the detective, the judge, and the jury. He investigates, decides a verdict, and carries out his own punishment. When Tiresias arrives at Thebes Oedipus questions him looking for answers. Tiresias is a blind man, who ironically can see the future and truths of people's lives. It is Tiresias who is the first person to tell Oedipus that he has killed his own father. Larc Blackwood Persuasive Speech A WORLD ON FIRE Prologe "Good afternoon fellow leaders!" projected Larc Blackwood, "I have all called you here today to propose an idea that can truly end all wars and national conflicts throughout the world!" The other politicians and world leaders snickered and whispered their doubts to one another, a few hopeful youths always proposed a "way to end all conflicts" a few times a year but they were always cast aside as futile attempt at something that could never be obtained, true world peace. "And how do we know your idea will be so different from all the others we've heard?" asked Wilson Brightland. A sudden hush fell across the room, Wilson Brightland was the leader of one of the most powerful nations known as Ultras and his voice carried much influence. He was six and half feet and 250 pounds of pure muscle and raw leadership, he rose through his countries ranks with prejudice speed and assumed the High Graceship when he was only 28, the youngest to have ever accomplished such a fet. His glare made Blackwood hesitate, but he carried on in his usual commanding manner, "I propose that rather than waring with each other and progressively making ourselves weaker, we all unite under one common banner, with one king chosen by the council, to rule over the world as one unified nation!" They are viewed by the other animals of the jungle, or the Jungle People as they call themselves, as outcasts and outlaws. The most prominent chapter they occur in, "Kaa's Hunting", shows their lawless, shiftless, and uncivilized way of life. This image in itself does not give off any racist undertone. However, Disney's adaption of The Jungle Book carries this view of the monkeys, while also giving them strong attributes that are commonly associated with African–Americans. In Kipling's original version of The Jungle Book, the jungle monkeys make their first prominent appearance in the chapter "Kaa's Hunting". The young boy Mowgli speaks of the jungle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Disney's version of the book keeps the negative attitude towards the jungle monkeys presented in the original story. However, it is in Disney's film adaptation that ties explicit attributes frequently affiliated with African–Americans to the Bandar–Log. Like in the Kipling's original story, the monkeys kidnap Mowgli and take him to their temple confines. One of the first differences between the book and the movie is presented when Mowgli is introduced to the monkey leader King Louie, whose voice acting is done by the jazz singer Louie Prima (The Jungle Book). As previously mentioned, in the original story of The Jungle Book the monkey people are leader–less. The choice of Louis Prima as the voice actor for King Louie is a significant selection. Louis Prima was a famous swing and jazz singer from New Orleans in the mid 20th century. Although Louie Prima was Caucasian, the jazz and swing genre of music is predominantly considered an African–American art form. His musical style, which included a harsh, raspy voice and scat singing, was greatly influenced by the famous African–American jazz singer Louie Armstrong. Louie Prima implements this musical style in King Louie's character as he even scats when he sings with Baloo. King Louie also uses phrases usually found in African–American Vernacular English, such as "I'll lay it on the line for ya," "Cool it," and "Craaaazy" (The Jungle Book). ...
