Professional Learning Community
A Professional Learning Community, or PLC, is a group of educators that meets regularly, shares
expertise, and works collaboratively to improve teaching skills and the academic performance of
students. Professional learning within communities requires continuous improvement, promotes
collective responsibility, and supports alignment of individual, team, school, and school system
goals.
The literature on professional learning communities repeatedly gives attention to five attributes of
such organizational arrangements:
1. Supportive and shared leadership,
2. Collective creativity,
3. Shared values and vision,
4. Supportive conditions, and
5. Shared personal practice.
Learning communities share collective responsibility for the learning of all students within the
school or school system by bringing together the entire education community, including members of
the education workforce –– teachers, support staff, school system staff, and administrators –– as
well as families, policy makers, and other stakeholders, to increase effective teaching in every
classroom. Within learning communities, peer accountability rather than formal or administrative ...

Knowledge base, teaching skills, reflective practice, scholarship of teaching and learning, and
professional learning community are interrelated factors for professional learning and development.
A strong knowledge base is the foundation of organizing information that are necessary for the
learning of our students while the teaching skills is significant for presenting those lessons.
Reflective practice allows us to explore deeper and look wider on or knowledge base and teaching
skills and undergo a scholarly research to reexamine and reassess our endeavors while the
professional learning communities provide us the venue to collaborate and share on those
realizations and effectively manage the issues of the teaching

Community Service Learning Placement
Prior to beginning my Community Service Learning placement at North Lake Woods Public School,
I have thought about how I will benefit, contribute and reflect on my placement. I will be
completing my placement in a Grade. 1 classroom consisting of 18 students. I am eager to expand
my knowledge on how children develop through an interactive experience. During my placement, I
hope to gain insight on how children develop, interact and learn by completing naturalistic
observation. I will be assisting and observing the students during their daily school activities such as
mathematics, language and everyday developmental exercises. With my significant amount of
experience working with students in my secondary school peer tutoring program, I believe

Analyze The Benefits Of A Professional Learning Community
A professional learning community" is composed of collaborative team whose members work
interpedently to achieve common goals linked to the purpose of learning" (Kronowitz, 2012). The
benefits of a professional learning community and new teacher mentor in an educational setting is
great. Both programs meet the needs of students and teachers. The professional learning community
brings educators together sharing ideas, experiences, working together collaboratively, improving
teaching skills and academic performances of the students. Strengthening teachers planning,
mentoring, and providing more strategies.
Professional growth for teachers, instill commitment, and making sure that students succeed.

Professional Learning Communities : A Teacher 's Perspective
Journal Entry One: A Teacher's Perspective "McLaughlin and Talbert (2006) defined professional
learning communities as "[organizational structures in which] teachers work collaboratively to
reflect on their practice, examine evidence about the relationship between practice and student
outcomes, and make changes that improve teaching and learning for the particular students in their
classes" (pp. 3–4)." (Teague, 2012, pg. 58) This quote explains what I personally think of
professional learning communities should be and what areas they should focus on. The problem that
I have faced in a professional learning community is colleagues that aren't willing to change. I have
experienced several individuals who would not put the time into gathering data or was reluctant to
share their findings. I think having individuals that are not willing to participate dampen the mood
of the group and help put a negative spin on the process. The best way to eliminate this problem is
by having everyone on board and have them collect authentic data. Authentic data help show what
areas the teacher needs to focus on. If data is authentic then there should be no arguments on what is
going wrong inside the classroom. As a teacher I will collect authentic data by working with my
colleagues and developing authentic assessments to collect the information I need. By collaborating
with other staff members we can find out what ways work the best for collecting data useful for the
group and

Community Service-Learning
Service–Learning is a way of teaching and learning. It is a great opportunity to involve in
community service activities and to apply the experience to the academic and personal development.
My service –Learning was at Manatee Elementary School. My daughter is in kindergarten at the
same school. It was my first time to volunteer in a school; it was a great experience for me.
I helped in many activities in the school either at my daughter's class or with other classes. One of
these activities was the Walk–A–Thon, which is walking marathon and it is a type of school
fundraiser; the goal of it is to raise funds for specific items for the school needs. It was the
volunteer's role to keep the walkers safe and happy. I had the chance to deal with

Professional Learning Community Essay
A professional learning community (PLC) is a group collaborating together to improve teacher
instruction, teacher learning, and student achievement. This improves the quality of living within the
community that the members of the PLC work and live in. A PLC has 5 components:
Shared Beliefs, Values, and Vision
Shared and Supportive Leadership
Collective Learning and Its Application
Supportive Conditions
Shared Personal Practice Theoretically, PLC's cover many topics needed to improve the academic
arena as we know it. A PLC can focus attention of a whole group toward accomplishing
monumental tasks. They foster collaboration among administrators, teachers, and community
stakeholders to achieve a common agreed upon set of goals. The sharing of power between
administrators and teachers ensures that everyone has a vested interest in the final outcome of the
PLC. The theory behind the PLC allows other stakeholders, such as the community, to decide what
the students will learn, how they will learn it, and to what depth they will learn it. Structural factors
will determine things like time of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everyone has to buy–into the concept of the PLC. Stakeholders will need to correctly learn and
understand the components that are within a PLC. I have witnessed teachers not even wanting to
"try another fad." These teachers didn't want to learn a new trick because they believe this too would
pass. An administrator will need to use "academic psychology" to garner total support for the PLC.
Teachers that are on board will need to have discussions with teachers and community stakeholders
that are doubtful with regards to operating a successful PLC. After successful implementation, the
members of the PLC will have to consistently meet and adhere to the procedures to guarantee the
continual progression of the PLC. This isn't something that one wants to just be a "flash in the

Professional Learning Communities : The Mentor
Professional Learning Communities: The Mentor
The mind of education has changed in the last few years to get away from teachers working alone in
isolation to a new idea of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). In contrast to the traditional
paradigm of professional development in which teachers attend off–site workshops and conferences
that may or may not inspire them to change their thinking or instruction, the Professional Learning
Community (PLC) involves teachers in site–based, ongoing, collaborative professional development
(Linder, Post and Calabrese 2012). These new programs have allowed teachers to get away from
isolation and start sharing ideas that will help the entire school community, and nowhere is this more
important than in new teacher mentor/mentee programs.
Synthesis
If principals want to improve student achievement in their school, rather than focus on the individual
inspection of teaching, they must focus on the collective analysis of evidence of student learning.
The key to improved student learning is to ensure more good teaching in more classrooms more of
the time. The most powerful strategy for improving both teaching and learning, however, is not by
micromanaging instruction but by creating the collaborative culture and collective responsibility of a
professional learning community (PLC) (Mattos, 2013). Today, many school districts have adopted a
formal mentoring program that consists of matching new teachers with a veteran mentor (Sever,

There are many ways in which professional development can happen. The item for development I
chose is the professional learning community.
Summary of Professional Learning Community
The professional learning community is a place where teachers come together to discuss certain
issues in the school. The PLC is an enjoyable activity that allows for many people to give their
point–of–view on a topic. The exact activity we did was called passing the ball.

Living Learning Community Analysis
During college, or throughout life as a whole, it is important to make connections to people who
have similar goals. By placing myself into an environment that allows me to reap the benefits of
similarly minded people, whilst also providing my perspectives and services to them, I am putting
myself in the greatest position for success. As an engineering student, others could both use my
assistance, or benefit from the sharing of ideas. As an experience, I believe a living learning
community to be extremely important to the students and faculty involved in facilitating it. Virginia
Tech itself is built upon the principles of community, with many of the pillars ideologies revolving
around that bond of community. In addition to the sharing of

Professional Learning Community Analysis
Professional Learning Community is not a term I would use to describe my school. The textbook
describes Professional Learning Communities as, "...one that promotes and values learning as an
ongoing, active collaborative process with dynamic dialogue by teachers, students, staff, principal,
parents, and the school community to improve the quality of learning and life within the school"
(Roberts & Pruitt, 2009 p.6). Based on that description alone, as a school we lack the basic
components of having a collaborative process with dialogue from the teachers, staff, and principal
with the focus on improving the quality of learning. Given all of the research findings and positive

Some teachers are naturally hesitant to try new things, but I present the program as a trial run, the
teachers know that if we implement something that's not working we will examine steps to fix it
together." My principal does a great job with this, she listens to the teacher's ideas or suggestions
and will find solutions to any problem. Next, I asked, "What are some benefits and challenges of
PLCs?" Ms. Alexander paused and thought for a moment, "the benefits are that teachers work
together with a purpose, they talk about student learning, and the teachers share the same vision. The
challenge is maintaining consistency across the board and motivating every teacher to stay
committed." I have witnessed the challenge with maintaining consistency on a few occasions at my
school. For instance, teachers were randomly grouped together for a teambuilding activity, in which
teachers had to share with their group members common challenges they face every school year.
The group members then developed a short list of tips or strategies that the teacher could use to
remedy whatever challenges they were facing. As

Abstract
Throughout this paper you will be able to gain more knowledge on what a Professional Learning
Community (PLC) is. I will explore two different areas: general characteristics of PLCs and the big
ideas that are associated with them. I will refer to different types of students throughout this paper.
When I mention high achievers I will be referring to those are students whose test scores put them in
the top twenty–five percent nationwide amongst their peers; when I mention low achievers I am
speaking of those students that perform lower than the median of their peers. PLC refers to

2. Create high–performing teams. "PLCs are built on a collaborative culture, where school leaders
and teachers work together to achieve their collective purpose of learning for all."
Within this big idea we, as teachers, develop norms, SMART goals and procedures for which the
PLC is to be run. By having a specific process that is followed during meeting times it keeps the
focus of the group on the learning of the child. When we explore the structure and process of an
effective PLC we one or more of the five characteristics: System Thinking, Personal Mastery, Team
Learning, Challenging Mental Needs, and Shared Vision. (Pearson Custom: Education, Executive
Leadership in the 21st Century MELS 601 p.25) Of these characteristics the most important one for
creating high–performing teams is Team Learning. As I stated earlier, if we learn as a team then we
will be more apt to see growth and development in our students because we will then be on the same
thinking path of student achievement. 3. Assess effectiveness of all students learning at high levels
based on results. "PLCs judge their effectiveness on outcomes related to the holistic development of
their students."
Within PLCs the professional teaching team should be using relevant data as a means to improve
what is happening inside the classroom. If the team is indeed using the data that is

Service Learning : A Community
Q1.1) Service learning involves a concerted approach to both serve the community and to develop
the individual through services. General volunteering involves just serving the community. For
example, volunteering at soup kitchen begins and ends with what one does at the soup kitchen.
Service learning does not being and end with the service rendered. In addition to serving the
community, there is an element of reflection. The reflection involves introspection, in an effort to
develop personally, and thinking about the responsibility the individual has to the community, as
well as thinking of ways to better serve the needs of the community. For example, the students who
volunteered at the Milagro Center not only helped out children, but were made more aware of the
needs of kids in the community. Without that experience, combined with reflection, they would not
have the opportunity to help the community, learn about their community, and see ways to help
better their community. This helps the community and fosters a connection between the students and
the community. In that example, the experience helped those students teach the children about how
to live healthier lives, because they knew how to communicate to these children and the needs of
those children. Therefore, volunteering only represents a fraction of service–learning.
Q1.2) Part of service learning is forming a connection to the local community and thinking about
ways to better the community in which one resides.

How The Learning Activity Encourages The Development Of A...
ORT Task 1
Scenario:
You have a classroom of 30 seventh–graders in a life science class. There are a variety of learners in
the class, including two English Language Learners (ELL) and one with special needs who is on an
individualized education plan (IEP). The majority of the class reads at grade level. You must provide
a strategy to teach the concept of food webs and the potential impact of human activities on a food
web.
1. Discuss how the learning activity encourages the development of a learning community.
The development of the learning community serves a dual purpose to benefit both the student and
the teacher. Establishing learning communities takes forethought and planning on the part of the
teacher. Planning a community consists of knowing the learners, their strengths and deficiencies,
and the strategies that will maximize the learning and growth potential of each. Teachers when
planning must maintain the integrity of state and national standards to ensure the learning objectives
have been clearly relayed to students; additionally it is their role to initially engage students so they
become eager and active participants in the process. The "Web of Connections" learning activity
relies heavily on student interaction and collaboration. Throughout each phase of the lesson students
interact, share, and collaborate to build a composite of a food web while building relationships that
sustain the class community. Moreover, the assignment provides leeway for

well as empowering them to use skills, they posses and gain, in the best possible way.
Assuming the fact, that they would come from very different backgrounds, with different learning
experience, it would be crucial to asses every one individually, based on their knowledge of English
language and adjust the learning styles and pace of education to each person.
According to the British Government statistics showing the increase of the immigrants coming into
UK (Statistics, 2015), so there seems to be a demand for the provision of ESOL classes across the
country to prepare the newcomers to live and work in UK.
As it would mostly be work with adults, the facilitator will have a variety of approaches available,
for example andragogy (from Greek andr– meaning 'man', agogos meaning 'leading'), which focuses
on adult education and uses different technics. The term itself points that it deals with adult learners
who do have some life experience, are self–directed and responsible for their own learning; and
could be a useful resource for one another. (Smith M. K., Andragogy, the encyclopedia of informal

Professional Learning Communities
Introduction
Schools are constantly looking for ways in which to improve. Research has revealed several
attributes of a school that proves to lead towards student learning and higher achievement including
strong leadership, clear and shared mission, vision, values, and goals, collective inquiry, action
oriented, collaborative teams that work interdependently, a focus on student learning and results
oriented. These ideas are represented within a Professional Learning Community (PLC). To become
a PLC, a staff must make changes in their actions and work together focusing on student learning.

Safe environments are built and there's a respect for diversity. Another highly important factor in
effective schools is a highly effective leader. Leadership is a key characteristic in a PLC also. The
principal acts as an instructional leader building relationships with the staff and developing high
moral. These characteristics are all evident in a PLC. "When schools truly begin to align their
practices with a commitment to learning for all, the educators within them begin to function as a
Professional Learning Community" (DuFour, DuFour & Eaker, 2008, p. 21). The PLC is more of an
re–culturing instead of a school reform. It is an ongoing process through which a staff works
collaboratively to share learning goals. In order to reach the goals set forth in laws such as NCLB, a
school must change it's culture to maintain an ongoing collaborative process to enhance everyone's
effectiveness to improve student behavior ( Nygard, 2010).
Four Essential Questions
The first role in building a successful learning community is to formulate a solid base of shared
mission, vision, values, and goals. These four are the building blocks of a solid foundation for
decision making for school improvement. Mission or purpose is the first block and focuses on the
question "Why do we exist?" The second block is vision or the direction the school is headed. It asks
the question "What kind of school or district do we hope to become?" A values block asks "How

Teaching And Professional Learning Communities
Furthermore, our class on Professional Learning Communities (PLC) also had a great impact on me
as an instructional coach. One of my responsibilities each week is to lead teachers in PLC. As stated
previously, last year was my first year in this new role. My partner left the district very late in the
summer and we were unable to find a replacement so I was doing the job of two people. I wasn't
sure how PLC was supposed to be structured and I didn't have anyone to lean on for support, so I
did the best I could to provide teachers with a new instructional strategy each week that could be
used in their classrooms. I thought I was doing a great job in PLC until I began the Schools and
Professional Learning Communities course. I learned from the work of DuFour and many others
that PLC was intended to be a time of collaboration. Teachers should be reviewing their students'
data and using that time to make informed instructional decisions after collaborating with their
colleagues. Teachers were walking away each week with new learning; however, there was very
little, if any, time spent on reviewing student work samples and adjusting instruction based on
feedback. I decided at that point it was time to make a change. In the spring semester, we began a
series of PLCs entitled Keep, Change, and Action. We began by looking at student work samples
collected from around the district. These samples were placed on a large poster and teachers were

According to Hord, Roussin & Sommers (2012), the PLC centers on quality teaching that results in
students' successful learning, Quality teaching is strengthened and increased through continuous
professional learning, and the PLC setting promotes this adult learning. Understanding the purpose
of a PLC is foundational to its creation and support. In fact, According to DuFour, DuFour & Eaker
(2006) PLC, is a group of educators who meet regularly, sharing knowledge and skills, and who
work collaboratively and harmoniously to improve teaching skills and the performance of students.
Additionally, Provini (2012) stated that a professional learning community represents the act of
transforming custom, law or pattern of behavior into institution that focus on constant improvement
in staff performance as well as student learning. Reichstetter (2006) offered the following

The Importance Of A Living-Learning Community
Over the course of history, a steadfast desire for knowledge has galvanized humanity. Today,
countless individuals embrace their ambitions and attend college in hopes of furthering their
educations. For this reason, an abundance of attractive options is being offered to vehement learners.
In particular, numerous schools across the United States have implemented living–learning
communities. Within these programs, enthusiastic students reside alongside others who share similar
passions and beliefs. Gradually, the popularity of these groups continues to increase and generate
public interest. Joining a living–learning community is certainly a beneficial experience because the
approach eases tensions, promotes engagement, and inspires success.
By opting to enroll in a living–learning community, students can alleviate their anxieties regarding
college. Entering an unfamiliar environment can naturally be both a daunting and stressful endeavor.
Nonetheless, administrators seek to relieve fears caused by the overwhelming presence of a
university. Academic advisor Vicki Nelson acknowledges that these projects "can help to shrink the
psychological size of the campus..." ("Should My College Student Consider"). While separated into
distinct groupings, students avoid being exposed to the frightening magnitude of an institution.
Therefore, in these reassuring circles, individuals can become comfortably acquainted with their
surroundings. Soon enough, they can gain a vital sense of

have an order to how their meeting was held. The began by discussing the unit that they were
completing which was using Greek Mythology to review and analyze student's reading
comprehension and summary writing abilities. They stated that their students seemed to be really
interested in the unit and did well with the reading comprehension. However, they had noticed that
some students were forgetting to state the title and author of the text within the summary and most
summaries lacked elaboration, but most students were knowledgeable about the basic structure of a
summary. As most students understood the basic structure, they decided that they were going to
transition onto the next unit which focused on informative essay writing, but modify the unit in
order to teach students the importance of including the title and author within a summary and ...

used data to support their assumptions through a common formative assessment, and then analyze
that data, they would become much more effective than they already

The Difference Between Service Learning, Volunteerism And...
Many people get the terms service learning, volunteerism and community service mixed together.
All three were made to make a difference somewhere or in someone's life. The main difference
between these services are the primary intentions of the programs. Service learning primary purpose
is to learn from the experience and to improve their skills. By doing so, they are helping those in
need. Volunteering and community service have the most in common, except the fact that
community service can be done without a voluntary basis. Those services are done without the
purpose of learning something from it, even though they can have a learning experience. Even
though most are volunteers doing the job, many can be paid to volunteer, mainly by their job that
persuades their employees to do so.
Houston Food Bank is a private non–profit organization. They were established in 1982 and are a
certified member of Feeding America. Their focus is to help end hunger by distributing the most
meals possible to those in need. They can provide 83,000,000 meals a year, which they are trying to
improve in. Most of the meals they pack up are sent to pantries and other organizations that need
food for individuals and families. Usually, food banks do not distribute their meals, but Houston
Food Bank does. With the help of volunteers, they can sort, pack and distribute food. Most of the
food given to them are provided from donors, local companies around the city, and USDA. The food
given to them would go to waste without their help and the volunteers who make the meals happen.
I attended the Houston Food Bank, and while I was there, I could tell they have strong teamwork
within the organization. All the employees knew what to do and how to handle that many
volunteers. They all communicated with the volunteers with a professional, friendly way. They
could get everyone who came in to sign in and get everything set up to start the day. I was not able
to tell one thing that went wrong. It was impressive how neatly and organized they had the building.
The atmosphere, at least for me, made me feel involved and wanting to come back.
Once everything was ready to start, there were groups made and taken to the designated area where

Future Teacher Learning Community
There is no uniformed look when trying to pick out an American in a group of people. America is a
diverse place with diverse people and the English language is our universal connector. So why is it
that when people who don't "look American" speak English no one cares to listen? Being in the
Korean Culture Club (KCC) and the Future Teacher Learning Community (FTLC) has showed me
that no matter what appearance we may show our true communication is in how we speak through
education, participation, expression, and performance.
The KCC and the FTLC are two communities that in that both involve learning and teaching. When
I first started the KCC they told us that the first step to connecting with the people is to learn they
speak. Just like starting any new language getting to know the alphabet is the first step we took. The
KCC has bi–weekly teaching sessions over the Korean language and sentence structure. The FTLC
is a community specifically made for teachers by teachers to help lead future teachers down the right
path. The FTLC has regular meeting to help keep students ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When it comes to the Korean culture, society as a whole expresses itself on a different scale than the
FTLC. Korean people are generally more conservative the most Americans they don't really show
any form of public affection, so when learning the social norms this comes to play. Korea's society
is based on Confucianism, which means respecting elders plays a huge part of society that everyone
participates in no matter the age. The FTLC however is different, their way of expressing has more
to do on how they speak and present themselves. Teachers are seen as role models so keeping up the
professional appearance is one of the main priorities. Since I want to be an elementary teacher, I
have to learn how to make class fun and engaging by using many motions and

Early Learning Community Analysis
Over the years, school districts have broadened their perspective on community learning, and now
we are encouraging principals to think building professional learning across early learning
communities, Pre–K–4. ELPIC is framework of prekindergarten through fourth grade, or age three
to grade four, follows the evolving growth and understanding of the knowledge presented and
instructed to the students. This results in a span within a child's entire learning continuum that
elementary school principals have direct connections to and an opportunity to influence.
Early Learning Communities might be new to some, but it encompasses so much of what principals
already believe in. For examples, learning starts early, supporting children to be prepared when they
start school, developing appropriate skills and background knowledge, and making sure children are
on grade level by the time they leave elementary levels grades in the areas of reading and math, but
no excluding other subjects such as social studies and science. This is very essential to ensuring that
early learning grade level students prepare in graduating from high school and pursue to their
college or careers in life. We must improve the knowledge and practice of our principals, teachers,
and students. Despite the importance of leadership development in ... Show more content on

We have often heard the phrase it takes a village to raise a kid, now we are learning it takes a
community to teach one. The topic of building professional learning communities within schools is
redirections the directions schools are perusing. A school is a group of people who shared a common
idea, goals, and interest which is often the premise in a community. Hebrews 10:24–25 "And let us
consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is

What consist of or can be seen as the factors of a learning community? According to Richard
DuFour a professional learning community starts with a three big ideas. First, ensuring that students
learn. DuFour sees the core mission of education is to not simply ensure that students are taught, but
to ensure they learn. By looking at what we want each student to learn, evaluating how we know
when that learning as occurred, and how we respond to difficulties in learning. Secondly, DuFour
sees a leaning community as having a culture of collaboration. The community of professional
leaners working together to collaborate for school improvement, and removing barriers for success.
Not as DuFour points out a misconception of the term collaboration which if often perceived as
building camaraderie. DuFour explains collaboration as the actual engagement strgerty of working
together. Lastly, DuFour points out that a community of professional learners needs to focus on
results. Proverbs 9:9, "Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous
man, and he will increase in learning". The collaboration in a community of learners presents itself
with the opportunities for instruction and to increase in our learning. A professional community of

Living Learning Communities
Overall consensus on living–learning communities is resoundingly positive from both the students
who take part in them and the colleges that administer these programs. In terms of the past research,
LLCs benefit students in a variety of ways. As described by multiple students in a conducted
interview, LLCs provide a "home away from home by creating a sense of hearth that is unparalleled
to anything else found on campus" (Brower, 2010). This creation of a specific type of environment
that feels welcoming to the students helps ease the transition from the experiences of either a
community college or highschool, to that of a university. Specifically in the case of at–risk students,
undergraduates deemed likely to drop out of schooling for academic, ... Show more content on

The head administers and creators of the NSLLP, Dr. Karen Inkelas and Dr. Keith Brower both
occupational researchers and professors at the University of Virginia and the University of
Wisconsin–Madison respectively, are considered to be the founders of modern–day research in the
field of living–learning communities. Launched in 2001, the NSLLP is a survey tool which assesses
how participation, or lack thereof, in a living–learning program/community influences the social,
academic, and developmental paths of colleges students. The survey, which is based on previous
literature on LLCs, takes in inputs such as a student's demographics or high school achievements as
well as various environmental factors. These factors, such as the student's major, peer and teacher
interactions, and extracurricular activities are all taken into consideration by the administers of the
survey. The algorithm then outputs the percent chance of dropout risk, their sense of belonging, and
and appreciation of diversity among other things (Brower, 2004). The NSLLP was administered to
both students in and not in a living–learning community in order to accurately gauge the effects that
LLCs have on a student. The study, which was repeated once in 2007 and again in 2014, has become
the cornerstone of the majority of research done in the the field of learning

A Study on Professional Learning Communities
Professional Learning Communities
Abstract
PLC means professional learning communities which are set up by teachers in order to help the
students who seem to be lagging behind the others academically. This is a way to reach out to the
students on a more personal level, where they get to interact not only with the books, but also with
the teachers who are able to guide them by recognizing their strengths and their weaknesses. This
form of assistance goes a long way in assisting the student develop a positive attitude towards
studies and have the zeal to excel by having a personal coach present to guide them whenever they
get stuck or make a mistake. This is a very encouraging way of ensuring homogenous learning in
today's academic institutions. The parents of the poorly performing students themselves seem
grateful for the attention given to their young ones, as it is any parent's dream to see their children
excel academically, and at the same time get value for their money.
Introduction
There have been studies carried out on this issue of PLC, as to whether it is functional not only in
theory, but also in practical, especially in a real school setting. For this reason, this essay will show
why this document best highlights this issue.
Professional Learning Communities
First of all, this study used a multiple case study in three schools that were below the required
standards and to find out how the theoretical ideas were being implemented in their practical
application.

Implementing Learning Communities At The Community College...
Introduction Many students start college and end up either dropping out or taking an exuberant
amount of time to complete. This is especially true for the community colleges, where the majority
of the students are commuters, a large portion work and some have family obligations. Many
institutions have started addressing these circumstances by creating learning communities. The idea
of implementing learning communities at the community college level can be the change that is
needed for the success of these students. In order to execute this change, an understanding needs to
be developed for the needs of the organization, in this case Citrus Community College in Glendora,
California. The resources need to be identified, including the ... Show more content on

The students in the learning communities will take some courses together, often with a common
theme link. There are at least five basic models of learning communities that share three common
factors: shared knowledge, shared knowing and shared responsibility (Rao, 2005). The courses are
linked together and the students can share knowledge with each other. By sharing this knowledge
the students enrolled in the classes together, get to know each other due to the fact they are together
more often. The students become dependent on each other to get work accomplished and this shared
responsibility helps the students learn to collaborate. The five basic models include linked courses,
learning clusters, coordinated studies program (CSP), freshman interest groups (FIG) and federated
learning community (FLC) (Rao, 2005). I would like to implement the freshman interest group as
one of the models of the learning community, into the academia at Citrus Community College. It
entails three freshman courses being linked together, usually involving an area of interest. Weekly
peer advising session will be held where the students can meet and discuss their coursework,
professors, and college life in general. One of the courses that all students would be required to take
is a general course called "College 101." This course involves various aspects of college life such as
student success, develop and transition into college. Each week a topic is discussed

Community Learning Philosophy
Philosophy Essay
My children have recently started attending a charter school in our area. I am very impressed with
the hands on learning methods that they use to teach the students. The school utilizes many
community learning projects which instills in them the importance of their community. They also
plant gardens and create models in small groups which helps the children learn to work together
while discovering how things work. My children who originally attended a normal public school,
are much more eager to learn. School is an exciting place where they are learning without even
realizing they are learning. My philosophy of education is that of progressivism. I strongly believe
that children learn best in an environment that lets them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some other ways that would be beneficial to enhancing learning would be visiting a museum,
making models, constructing timelines, oral history interviews, site studies, and problem–solving
exercises. Activities that include working in teams build confidence and teach children to work
together. Ultimately, I believe, project–based learning provides an education superior to the
traditional.
When discussing and analyzing information to help the students learn to make informed decisions, it
would be helpful to have the students relate the story to their own lives or outside events. Activities
such as role plays and debates that engage students with significant ideas and encourages them to
connect what they are learning to their prior knowledge and to current issues. This will cause them
to think critically and creatively about what they are learning.
When students are not being motivated in class it can cause them to be disruptive and uninvolved.
Keeping students involved and engaged in activities is the best solution to this problem. I would put
the students in groups to discuss and analyze information and create activities that relate to the
curriculum to help the students stay involved in their studies. I believe that this kind of educating
would create a challenging yet fun environment to learn

Explain The Strengths Of A Learning Community
Learning communities bring different peoples strengths and weaknesses together. If you are
involved in the learning community, you can gain knowledge and grow in your own strengths and
weaknesses. You can also help others grow in the learning community.
I bring multiple strengths to a learning community. First, I am good at understanding what others
say. This is an important strength to have because it will help you understand what others have to
say. Secondly, listening to others is also an important strength to have. Instead of caring about your
own opinion, you can listen to other peoples thoughts and grow your opinion off what they have
said.

Building Effective Service Learning Programs in Local...
Kids these days have a bad rap. Adults who don't regularly interact with high school students may
only see the negative side of the adolescents in their community. In fact, "sixty–one percent of
American adults are convinced that today's youth face a crisis in their values and morals, look at
teenagers with misgiving and view them as undisciplined, disrespectful, and unfriendly" (Latham,
2003). One way to help change the attitudes of adults and also encourage youth personal
development is service learning programs in local communities. By participating in service learning
programs, students learn how to navigate group dynamics, diversify their peer group to include
adults and people from different backgrounds and begin to feel a sense of ... Show more content on

(Middleton & Kelly, 1996). One of the biggest issues stems from a lack of facilitation on the larger
social issues involved with community service. When there is a proper forum to discuss the
experiences they receive while volunteering, students are given a chance to understand how policies
and civic involvement play a direct role in the lives of people in their communities. (Lakin &
Mahoney, 2006).
Another issue is content involved in the community service activities. "If teenagers are thrust into a
volunteer situation they don't understand or feel that they are simply being assigned made–up work,
it can actually have a detrimental effect" (Tugend, 2010). One way to make the most of volunteer
opportunities is to specifically design the content around areas of student development. By focusing
on key content areas, students learn how to use their current skill set to navigate new experiences
and difficult situations. (Lakin & Mahoney, 2006). A well organized and thoughtful volunteer
opportunity has proven time and time again to be a positive experience for youth. There are many
studies that discuss the character building benefits of service learning. Students who participate have
higher academic achievements, develop critical thinking, problem solving, decision making,
planning and organizing skills and expand their social circles. A student who volunteers is more
likely to volunteer and vote as adult. (Latham, 2003).

In today's time it gets easy to forget about the outside world. We live such a busy life that we usually
forget about how many people there are that need our help. It gets so easy for us to not even think

in India I was born in extreme poverty. While living in poverty we did not receive much help from
others and my family and I were on our own. After coming to America I realized how important it is
to give back to the community. After coming to University of Wisconsin– Parkside I learned about
the Community Based Learning Certificate. This certificate is super helpful and important for

hygienist can have a lesson for the students on proper oral healthcare and explore different models

the best basic skin care, basic learning of how to apply different makeup looks, and hair care
routines. Students can learn to go to a department store and learn about the layout of the store and

Personal Narrative: Living Learning Community
My choice to join the Sustainability Living Learning Community was an easy one. Becoming a
freshman in college is an intimidating experience, but the community atmosphere of the Living
Learning Community was immediately welcoming and I have learned more about sustainability in
the weeks of the seminar than I have ever known in my life. We initiated change in our community
that will hopefully inspire others to do the same. This community has taught me to be an advocate of
sustainable change that I will continue to develop as I continue my college career. Campus
sustainability is a task largely in the hands of the students. The effects of climate change will
directly impact our lives in the future, so to prepare, it is our job to make a change. A college's job is
to serve its students as best as possible, and that is certainly a major tenant at Temple University,
though to get what we want, we need to make our voices heard. While it takes a lot of guts to go talk
to President Theobald, that is the best way to make known the problems and worries we are facing.
In respect to sustainability, Temple students also have the Office of Sustainability to help perpetuate
their causes and getting involved in organizations such as Living Learning Communities,

Professional Learning Community

  • 1. Professional Learning Community A Professional Learning Community, or PLC, is a group of educators that meets regularly, shares expertise, and works collaboratively to improve teaching skills and the academic performance of students. Professional learning within communities requires continuous improvement, promotes collective responsibility, and supports alignment of individual, team, school, and school system goals. The literature on professional learning communities repeatedly gives attention to five attributes of such organizational arrangements: 1. Supportive and shared leadership, 2. Collective creativity, 3. Shared values and vision, 4. Supportive conditions, and 5. Shared personal practice. Learning communities share collective responsibility for the learning of all students within the school or school system by bringing together the entire education community, including members of the education workforce –– teachers, support staff, school system staff, and administrators –– as well as families, policy makers, and other stakeholders, to increase effective teaching in every classroom. Within learning communities, peer accountability rather than formal or administrative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 7. Professional Learning Communities : A Teacher 's Perspective Journal Entry One: A Teacher's Perspective "McLaughlin and Talbert (2006) defined professional learning communities as "[organizational structures in which] teachers work collaboratively to reflect on their practice, examine evidence about the relationship between practice and student outcomes, and make changes that improve teaching and learning for the particular students in their classes" (pp. 3–4)." (Teague, 2012, pg. 58) This quote explains what I personally think of professional learning communities should be and what areas they should focus on. The problem that I have faced in a professional learning community is colleagues that aren't willing to change. I have experienced several individuals who would not put the time into gathering data or was reluctant to share their findings. I think having individuals that are not willing to participate dampen the mood of the group and help put a negative spin on the process. The best way to eliminate this problem is by having everyone on board and have them collect authentic data. Authentic data help show what areas the teacher needs to focus on. If data is authentic then there should be no arguments on what is going wrong inside the classroom. As a teacher I will collect authentic data by working with my colleagues and developing authentic assessments to collect the information I need. By collaborating with other staff members we can find out what ways work the best for collecting data useful for the group and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is a great opportunity to involve in community service activities and to apply the experience to the academic and personal development. My service –Learning was at Manatee Elementary School. My daughter is in kindergarten at the same school. It was my first time to volunteer in a school; it was a great experience for me. I helped in many activities in the school either at my daughter's class or with other classes. One of these activities was the Walk–A–Thon, which is walking marathon and it is a type of school fundraiser; the goal of it is to raise funds for specific items for the school needs. • 13. Professional Learning Community Essay A professional learning community (PLC) is a group collaborating together to improve teacher instruction, teacher learning, and student achievement. This improves the quality of living within the community that the members of the PLC work and live in. A PLC has 5 components: Shared Beliefs, Values, and Vision Shared and Supportive Leadership Collective Learning and Its Application Supportive Conditions Shared Personal Practice Theoretically, PLC's cover many topics needed to improve the academic arena as we know it. A PLC can focus attention of a whole group toward accomplishing monumental tasks. They foster collaboration among administrators, teachers, and community stakeholders to achieve a common agreed upon set of goals. The sharing of power between administrators and teachers ensures that everyone has a vested interest in the final outcome of the PLC. The theory behind the PLC allows other stakeholders, such as the community, to decide what the students will learn, how they will learn it, and to what depth they will learn it. Structural factors will determine things like time of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Everyone has to buy–into the concept of the PLC. Stakeholders will need to correctly learn and understand the components that are within a PLC. I have witnessed teachers not even wanting to "try another fad." These teachers didn't want to learn a new trick because they believe this too would pass. An administrator will need to use "academic psychology" to garner total support for the PLC. Teachers that are on board will need to have discussions with teachers and community stakeholders that are doubtful with regards to operating a successful PLC. After successful implementation, the members of the PLC will have to consistently meet and adhere to the procedures to guarantee the continual progression of the PLC. • 15. Professional Learning Communities : The Mentor Professional Learning Communities: The Mentor The mind of education has changed in the last few years to get away from teachers working alone in isolation to a new idea of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). In contrast to the traditional paradigm of professional development in which teachers attend off–site workshops and conferences that may or may not inspire them to change their thinking or instruction, the Professional Learning Community (PLC) involves teachers in site–based, ongoing, collaborative professional development (Linder, Post and Calabrese 2012). These new programs have allowed teachers to get away from isolation and start sharing ideas that will help the entire school community, and nowhere is this more important than in new teacher mentor/mentee programs. Synthesis If principals want to improve student achievement in their school, rather than focus on the individual inspection of teaching, they must focus on the collective analysis of evidence of student learning. The key to improved student learning is to ensure more good teaching in more classrooms more of the time. The most powerful strategy for improving both teaching and learning, however, is not by micromanaging instruction but by creating the collaborative culture and collective responsibility of a professional learning community (PLC) (Mattos, 2013). Today, many school districts have adopted a formal mentoring program that consists of matching new teachers with a veteran mentor (Sever, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

By placing myself into an environment that allows me to reap the benefits of similarly minded people, whilst also providing my perspectives and services to them, I am putting myself in the greatest position for success. As an engineering student, others could both use my assistance, or benefit from the sharing of ideas. • 23. Professional Learning Community Analysis Professional Learning Community is not a term I would use to describe my school. The textbook describes Professional Learning Communities as, "...one that promotes and values learning as an ongoing, active collaborative process with dynamic dialogue by teachers, students, staff, principal, parents, and the school community to improve the quality of learning and life within the school" (Roberts & Pruitt, 2009 p.6). Based on that description alone, as a school we lack the basic components of having a collaborative process with dialogue from the teachers, staff, and principal with the focus on improving the quality of learning. Some teachers are naturally hesitant to try new things, but I present the program as a trial run, the teachers know that if we implement something that's not working we will examine steps to fix it together." My principal does a great job with this, she listens to the teacher's ideas or suggestions and will find solutions to any problem. Next, I asked, "What are some benefits and challenges of PLCs?" Ms. Alexander paused and thought for a moment, "the benefits are that teachers work together with a purpose, they talk about student learning, and the teachers share the same vision. The challenge is maintaining consistency across the board and motivating every teacher to stay committed." I have witnessed the challenge with maintaining consistency on a few occasions at my school. For instance, teachers were randomly grouped together for a teambuilding activity, in which teachers had to share with their group members common challenges they face every school year. The group members then developed a short list of tips or strategies that the teacher could use to remedy whatever challenges they were facing. As ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. What Is a Professional Learning Community What is a Professional Learning Community? NaKishia D. Glenn Gardner–Webb University Abstract Throughout this paper you will be able to gain more knowledge on what a Professional Learning Community (PLC) is. I will explore two different areas: general characteristics of PLCs and the big ideas that are associated with them. I will refer to different types of students throughout this paper. When I mention high achievers I will be referring to those are students whose test scores put them in the top twenty–five percent nationwide amongst their peers; when I mention low achievers I am speaking of those students that perform lower than the median of their peers. PLC refers to Professional Learning Community. S.M.A.R.T Goals: Specific, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 2. Create high–performing teams. "PLCs are built on a collaborative culture, where school leaders and teachers work together to achieve their collective purpose of learning for all." Within this big idea we, as teachers, develop norms, SMART goals and procedures for which the PLC is to be run. By having a specific process that is followed during meeting times it keeps the focus of the group on the learning of the child. When we explore the structure and process of an effective PLC we one or more of the five characteristics: System Thinking, Personal Mastery, Team Learning, Challenging Mental Needs, and Shared Vision. (Pearson Custom: Education, Executive Leadership in the 21st Century MELS 601 p.25) Of these characteristics the most important one for creating high–performing teams is Team Learning. As I stated earlier, if we learn as a team then we will be more apt to see growth and development in our students because we will then be on the same thinking path of student achievement. 3. Assess effectiveness of all students learning at high levels based on results. "PLCs judge their effectiveness on outcomes related to the holistic development of their students." Within PLCs the professional teaching team should be using relevant data as a means to improve what is happening inside the classroom. If the team is indeed using the data that is ... • 27. Service Learning : A Community Q1.1) Service learning involves a concerted approach to both serve the community and to develop the individual through services. General volunteering involves just serving the community. For example, volunteering at soup kitchen begins and ends with what one does at the soup kitchen. Service learning does not being and end with the service rendered. In addition to serving the community, there is an element of reflection. The reflection involves introspection, in an effort to develop personally, and thinking about the responsibility the individual has to the community, as well as thinking of ways to better serve the needs of the community. For example, the students who volunteered at the Milagro Center not only helped out children, but were made more aware of the needs of kids in the community. Without that experience, combined with reflection, they would not have the opportunity to help the community, learn about their community, and see ways to help better their community. This helps the community and fosters a connection between the students and the community. In that example, the experience helped those students teach the children about how to live healthier lives, because they knew how to communicate to these children and the needs of those children. Therefore, volunteering only represents a fraction of service–learning. Q1.2) Part of service learning is forming a connection to the local community and thinking about ways to better the community in which one resides. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. How The Learning Activity Encourages The Development Of A... ORT Task 1 Scenario: You have a classroom of 30 seventh–graders in a life science class. There are a variety of learners in the class, including two English Language Learners (ELL) and one with special needs who is on an individualized education plan (IEP). The majority of the class reads at grade level. You must provide a strategy to teach the concept of food webs and the potential impact of human activities on a food web. 1. Discuss how the learning activity encourages the development of a learning community. The development of the learning community serves a dual purpose to benefit both the student and the teacher. Establishing learning communities takes forethought and planning on the part of the teacher. Planning a community consists of knowing the learners, their strengths and deficiencies, and the strategies that will maximize the learning and growth potential of each. Teachers when planning must maintain the integrity of state and national standards to ensure the learning objectives have been clearly relayed to students; additionally it is their role to initially engage students so they become eager and active participants in the process. The "Web of Connections" learning activity relies heavily on student interaction and collaboration. Throughout each phase of the lesson students interact, share, and collaborate to build a composite of a food web while building relationships that sustain the class community. The purpose of this assignment is to discuss the Community Learning and Development provision for ESOL learners in aim to support their assimilation and settlement process into the community as well as empowering them to use skills, they posses and gain, in the best possible way. Assuming the fact, that they would come from very different backgrounds, with different learning experience, it would be crucial to asses every one individually, based on their knowledge of English language and adjust the learning styles and pace of education to each person. According to the British Government statistics showing the increase of the immigrants coming into UK (Statistics, 2015), so there seems to be a demand for the provision of ESOL classes across the country to prepare the newcomers to live and work in UK. As it would mostly be work with adults, the facilitator will have a variety of approaches available, for example andragogy (from Greek andr– meaning 'man', agogos meaning 'leading'), which focuses on adult education and uses different technics. The term itself points that it deals with adult learners who do have some life experience, are self–directed and responsible for their own learning; and could be a useful resource for one another. Research has revealed several attributes of a school that proves to lead towards student learning and higher achievement including strong leadership, clear and shared mission, vision, values, and goals, collective inquiry, action oriented, collaborative teams that work interdependently, a focus on student learning and results oriented. These ideas are represented within a Professional Learning Community (PLC). To become a PLC, a staff must make changes in their actions and work together focusing on student learning. Safe environments are built and there's a respect for diversity. Another highly important factor in effective schools is a highly effective leader. Leadership is a key characteristic in a PLC also. The principal acts as an instructional leader building relationships with the staff and developing high moral. These characteristics are all evident in a PLC. "When schools truly begin to align their practices with a commitment to learning for all, the educators within them begin to function as a Professional Learning Community" (DuFour, DuFour & Eaker, 2008, p. 21). The PLC is more of an re–culturing instead of a school reform. It is an ongoing process through which a staff works collaboratively to share learning goals. In order to reach the goals set forth in laws such as NCLB, a school must change it's culture to maintain an ongoing collaborative process to enhance everyone's effectiveness to improve student behavior ( Nygard, 2010). Four Essential Questions The first role in building a successful learning community is to formulate a solid base of shared mission, vision, values, and goals. These four are the building blocks of a solid foundation for decision making for school improvement. Mission or purpose is the first block and focuses on the question "Why do we exist?" The second block is vision or the direction the school is headed. It asks the question "What kind of school or district do we hope to become?" A values block asks "How ... • 38. Teaching And Professional Learning Communities Furthermore, our class on Professional Learning Communities (PLC) also had a great impact on me as an instructional coach. One of my responsibilities each week is to lead teachers in PLC. As stated previously, last year was my first year in this new role. My partner left the district very late in the summer and we were unable to find a replacement so I was doing the job of two people. I wasn't sure how PLC was supposed to be structured and I didn't have anyone to lean on for support, so I did the best I could to provide teachers with a new instructional strategy each week that could be used in their classrooms. I thought I was doing a great job in PLC until I began the Schools and Professional Learning Communities course. I learned from the work of DuFour and many others that PLC was intended to be a time of collaboration. Teachers should be reviewing their students' data and using that time to make informed instructional decisions after collaborating with their colleagues. Teachers were walking away each week with new learning; however, there was very little, if any, time spent on reviewing student work samples and adjusting instruction based on feedback. I decided at that point it was time to make a change. In the spring semester, we began a series of PLCs entitled Keep, Change, and Action. We began by looking at student work samples collected from around the district. These samples were placed on a large poster and teachers were given time to review the ... The AFN receives its mandate from resolutions passed at these assemblies, and is accountable to over 630 First Nations, as well as urban and rural First Nations peoples, through this process (Assembly of First Nations, 2017a). According to Hord, Roussin & Sommers (2012), the PLC centers on quality teaching that results in students' successful learning, Quality teaching is strengthened and increased through continuous professional learning, and the PLC setting promotes this adult learning. Understanding the purpose of a PLC is foundational to its creation and support. In fact, According to DuFour, DuFour & Eaker (2006) PLC, is a group of educators who meet regularly, sharing knowledge and skills, and who work collaboratively and harmoniously to improve teaching skills and the performance of students. Additionally, Provini (2012) stated that a professional learning community represents the act of transforming custom, law or pattern of behavior into institution that focus on constant improvement in staff performance as well as student learning. • 46. The Importance Of A Living-Learning Community Over the course of history, a steadfast desire for knowledge has galvanized humanity. Today, countless individuals embrace their ambitions and attend college in hopes of furthering their educations. For this reason, an abundance of attractive options is being offered to vehement learners. In particular, numerous schools across the United States have implemented living–learning communities. Within these programs, enthusiastic students reside alongside others who share similar passions and beliefs. Gradually, the popularity of these groups continues to increase and generate public interest. Joining a living–learning community is certainly a beneficial experience because the approach eases tensions, promotes engagement, and inspires success. By opting to enroll in a living–learning community, students can alleviate their anxieties regarding college. Entering an unfamiliar environment can naturally be both a daunting and stressful endeavor. Nonetheless, administrators seek to relieve fears caused by the overwhelming presence of a university. Academic advisor Vicki Nelson acknowledges that these projects "can help to shrink the psychological size of the campus..." ("Should My College Student Consider"). The began by discussing the unit that they were completing which was using Greek Mythology to review and analyze student's reading comprehension and summary writing abilities. They stated that their students seemed to be really interested in the unit and did well with the reading comprehension. However, they had noticed that some students were forgetting to state the title and author of the text within the summary and most summaries lacked elaboration, but most students were knowledgeable about the basic structure of a summary. • 50. The Difference Between Service Learning, Volunteerism And... Many people get the terms service learning, volunteerism and community service mixed together. All three were made to make a difference somewhere or in someone's life. The main difference between these services are the primary intentions of the programs. Service learning primary purpose is to learn from the experience and to improve their skills. By doing so, they are helping those in need. Volunteering and community service have the most in common, except the fact that community service can be done without a voluntary basis. Those services are done without the purpose of learning something from it, even though they can have a learning experience. Even though most are volunteers doing the job, many can be paid to volunteer, mainly by their job that persuades their employees to do so. Houston Food Bank is a private non–profit organization. They were established in 1982 and are a certified member of Feeding America. Their focus is to help end hunger by distributing the most meals possible to those in need. They can provide 83,000,000 meals a year, which they are trying to improve in. Most of the meals they pack up are sent to pantries and other organizations that need food for individuals and families. Usually, food banks do not distribute their meals, but Houston Food Bank does. With the help of volunteers, they can sort, pack and distribute food. Most of the food given to them are provided from donors, local companies around the city, and USDA. The food given to them would go to waste without their help and the volunteers who make the meals happen. I attended the Houston Food Bank, and while I was there, I could tell they have strong teamwork within the organization. All the employees knew what to do and how to handle that many volunteers. They all communicated with the volunteers with a professional, friendly way. They could get everyone who came in to sign in and get everything set up to start the day. I was not able to tell one thing that went wrong. It was impressive how neatly and organized they had the building. The atmosphere, at least for me, made me feel involved and wanting to come back. America is a diverse place with diverse people and the English language is our universal connector. So why is it that when people who don't "look American" speak English no one cares to listen? Being in the Korean Culture Club (KCC) and the Future Teacher Learning Community (FTLC) has showed me that no matter what appearance we may show our true communication is in how we speak through education, participation, expression, and performance. The KCC and the FTLC are two communities that in that both involve learning and teaching. By looking at what we want each student to learn, evaluating how we know when that learning as occurred, and how we respond to difficulties in learning. (Lakin & Mahoney, 2006). Another issue is content involved in the community service activities. "If teenagers are thrust into a volunteer situation they don't understand or feel that they are simply being assigned made–up work, it can actually have a detrimental effect" (Tugend, 2010).
