The Fellowship of the Ring
The story of The Lord of the Rings contains many aspects from Anglo–Saxon epic, Beowulf, and
Anglo–Norman romance, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Certain components from these works
are found in Frodo, a hero from The Fellowship of the Rings. These three characters; Frodo,
Beowulf, and Sir Gawain, all have their similarities and differences. Despite the obvious
connections between these characters, there are some significant traits that single out Frodo as a new
type of hero. While the similarities create parallels between the Tolkien text and the older works, the
differences between all these works is what singles out Frodo Baggins from the other heroes. ...

These significant traits that single out Frodo from Beowulf and Sir Gawain are the differences from
each other. The difference between Frodo and Beowulf would be that Beowulf is extremely arrogant
about how he kills Grendel with just his bare hands. Frodo and many other characters in The Lord of
the Rings do what they do to help Middle–earth not to prove how strong they are but instead to save
all of Middle–earth from Sauron and his evil army. Even though Frodo did give into temptation just
as how Sir Gawain did he didn't allow that to define him. Frodo still went on with the quest to
Mordor knowing there is still some hope that he can accomplish this important task while knowing
the fate of Middle–earth is resting upon his shoulders. Frodo Baggins shows every single of these
attributes. You see his bravery and courage come from him when he accepts to take the ring to
Mordor knowing that he will encounter many dangers. Even if Frodo does have many flaws such as
being a hobbit, he is still able to go through many obstacles with or without the Fellowship.
Ultimately from these similarities and differences, Tolkien's Frodo Baggins serves as a new hero
with brave, courageous, and flawed qualities. Tolkien takes certain aspects from Beowulf and Sir
Gawain and the Green Knight but in addition he throws in some significant qualities to make a

Expanding Courage "All we have to decide is what we do with the time that is given to us. There are
other forces at work in this world, besides the will of evil" (Tolkien 304). Growth and courage are
both vital actions in life. One cannot hope to live and thrive without growing both internally and
externally, and having the courage to stand up for what one's beliefs. Courage is directly affected by
growth, for without growth, one will never obtain the courage to move on and push forward when
times get tough in life. Stepping out of one's comfort zone takes immense growth and no small
amount of courage, but can prove to be a pivotal moment within climactic events. In his epic tale ...

Throughout the first chapters of The Hobbit, Bilbo is portrayed in this manner, but Tolkien
brilliantly changes Bilbo little by little to symbolize the importance of growing, maturing, and
finding courage to stand up for what is right. Another great example for the need of growth and
courage that Tolkien highlights in the early parts of his work The Hobbit, is showing how obsessed
Bilbo Baggins is with his possessions. "Tell me Bilbo, when did doilies and your mother's dishes
become so important to you? The world is not in your books and maps. It's out there" (Tolkien 17).
Through this quote, Tolkien shows how self–centered people become so involved with themselves,
they start to care too much for the things that matter least. Bilbo for example, has no interest in his
approaching journey, rather he is fussing over his dishes and cloths, casting away the needs of others
and the outside world. Much like Tolkien's famous character, so many people are worried about just
themselves. They have no interest in the outside would and their growth stops and courage hinders.
A person can be very well off but if they are so wrapped up with their own affairs, and do not
experience the world they cannot grow and mature. Without growing and maturing, real world
issues aren't addressed and communication becomes surreal. No one knows how to address these
issues and that just creates more anarchy. Real world experience is key to growth. Growth is key to

The Hobbit Bilbo Baggins
When the eccentric hobbit Bilbo Baggins leaves his home in the Shire, he gives his greatest treasure
to his heir Frodo: a magic ring that makes its wearer invisible. Because of the difficulty Bilbo has in
giving the ring away, his friend the wizard Gandalf the Grey suspects that the ring is more than it
appears. Some years later, Gandalf reveals to Frodo that the ring is in fact the One Ring, forged by
Sauron the Dark Lord thousands of years before to enable him to dominate and enslave all of
Middle–earth. Gandalf tells Frodo that the Ring must be destroyed to defeat Sauron's evil, but he
also warns him that the Enemy has learned of the Ring's whereabouts from the creature Gollum and
will seek to find it and kill its bearer. Despite the danger and hopelessness of the quest, Frodo
accepts the burden and resolves to take the Ring to the safety of the elven stronghold of Rivendell.
Frodo sets off with three companions, fellow hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam. After a series of close
calls and misadventures, where they are saved only by the timely intervention of the mysterious
Tom Bombadil, they reach the town of Bree. The innkeeper delivers a letter from Gandalf
recommending a weather–beaten Ranger known as Strider as their guide to the elves. Strider ...

they resolve to brave the perilous dwarven Mines of Moria, now overrun by orcs and even darker
things. Within Moria, Gollum begins following them. When the nine have nearly found their way

Frodo's Seed of Courage
Frodo's Seed of Courage Essay Courage is an essential quality that is found in every archetypal
hero. Courage is defined as the quality of mind and spirit that enables an individual to face
difficulty, danger, and pain without fear. An individual is not born with a courageous heart, but
instead develops courage through experience of difficulty and danger. The stimulation of courage is
analogous to the growth of a beautiful flower. Courage starts off as a seed which is planted in the
soil of the individual's heart. The planting of the seed is usually initiated by a courageous act during
a time of difficulty or danger. As an individual experiences many of these dangerous and difficult
circumstances, the individual's courage begins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Frodo's willingness to face even greater dangers clearly demonstrates that his courage continues to
grow. Frodo once again shows his constant growth of courage during the journey through the Mines
of Moria. When the Fellowship is venturing in the Mines of Moria, they run into a large group of
orcs. As one of the orcs tries to break into the room that the Fellowship is trapped in, Boromir
strikes at the arm of the orc. Although Boromir is a powerful warrior, his sword does nothing and
slips from his hands. After Boromir fails to harm the orc, "Suddenly, and to his own surprise, Frodo
felt a hot wrath blaze up in his heart. ̒ The Shire! ̓ he cried, and springing beside Boromir, he stooped
, and stabbed with Sting at the hideous foot" (364). Consequently, Frodo's courage overpowers
Boromir's brute strength. Furthermore, Frodo's attack on an individual orc causes his courage to
grow strong enough to fight against a hoard of orcs. After Frodo and the Fellowship kill thirteen
orcs, the rest of the orcs temporarily run away giving time for the Fellowship to escape. Following
the Council of Elrond and the journey through the Mines of Moria, Frodo's courage becomes more
natural, thus revealing that Frodo's courage is near full growth. Frodo shows full transformation into
a courageous individual at Lórien and through his most courageous act of all at Amon Hen. Frodo
first shows his full transformation into a courageous

How Is Fodo Baggins Selfish
Frodo Baggins was just another ordinary Hobbit living in the Shire, but he matured into an
unexpected hero who was renowned for destroying the one Ring to rule them all. Frodo Baggins is
the son of Drogo Baggins and Primula Brandybuck. He was a Hobbit of the Shire during the Third
Age. When Frodo was young, he spent the majority of the time at the Brandy Hall in Buckland.
When he was a child, Frodo was known to be a rascal. He became friends with Meriadoc
Brandybuck and Peregrin Took causing trouble everywhere they went to. Hobbits love mushrooms,
so Frodo, Merry, and Pippin would often steal mushrooms from Farmer Maggot's farm in the Marish
region of the East Farthing of the Shire. When Frodo was twelve years old, his parents died due to a
boating accident on the Brandywine river. Bilbo adopted Frodo and invited Frodo to live with him in
Bag End and declared that Frodo be his heir. Both Frodo and Bilbo grew very fond ... Show more

Frodo had never encountered such a big threat before and it really portrays how his courage has
grown throughout his perilous journey. Frodo helped to defeat the troll before he was stabbed in his
chest. They left the chamber, running for the Bridge of Khazad–dum because the Balrog was on
their tracks. This was one of Frodo's major grievances because Gandalf fell while confronting
Durin's Bane to save Frodo and the Ring. Frodo grieved from his loss of Gandalf journeyed further
to the kingdom of Lothlorien. Frodo offered Lady Galadriel the One Ring because he no longer
wants to carry the burden of such an evil. It relates to how Frodo was before when Gandalf
explained to Frodo what the Ring was. Frodo wanted nothing to do with it, so he offered it to
Gandalf, but he denied it. Much like Gandalf, Lady Galadriel also resisted the urge to take the One
Ring. In the end, it comes down to how much courage a Hobbit can

The Lord Of The Rings
Peter Jackson who is producer, director, and co scriptwriter adapted the J.R.R.Tolkien's epic novel
The Lord of the Rings into the film version. This series of movies has become one of the most
famous topics of this time. The basic narratives– the free peoples of Middle–Earth defeat the Dark
Lord Sauron and his monster army which he creates to control Middle–Earth. The concept of morals
in these films is that there is always hope in the world of darkness through the events in the two
main threads, Frodo–Sam and the War (Aragorn) which illustrate in a final movie The Lord of the
Rings: The Return of the King.
The Lord of the Rings is the story of the unexpected hero Frodo–Sam on the hero's journey as
Ringbearers who have to go to Mordor and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the movie The Return of the King, Frodo overcomes his sacredness three times. One is the
moment that Gollum, Sam and Frodo start to climb up on the mountain. Second is a time when
Gollum guides Frodo to the cave to kill and take the Ring away from Frodo and the last time is in
the Mordor Mountain where Sam and Frodo have given up but Frodo tries to stand up and keep
moving forward.
In the War of the Rings, Sam and Frodo struggles more with internal conflicts that they must
overcome through strength of will and character with the dangers they encounter along the road. The
first scene of the film opens with Sam asleep and Frodo awake. After looking around, Frodo pulls at
his shirt collar and pulls out the Ring as an expression of conflicted longing. The internal conflict of
Sam and Frodo is in truth. Frodo's struggle is to escape the power of the Ring while Sam's struggle
is to stop Frodo from loosing himself to the Ring's will. In discussing the relationship between
Frodo and Sam, Peter Jackson instilled in Sam the hope and purity of soul that allow Frodo corrupt
will of the Ring by a true, devoted friend. Although Gollum succeeds working ceaselessly to poison
Frodo against Sam, Sam still follows and supports Frodo through their joined efforts that Frodo
makes it as afar as he does.

Bizarro's Character Analysis: Superman
Bizarro was a character, and enemy of Superman. He was the complete antithesis of Superman in
every way: his attire, his thought process, the way he speaks, the way that he acts, and how he
processes information. This is similar to the world that we live and have been raised in. Everything
that we've experienced is the polar opposite of everything that we've learned. The problem with this
is that we are viewed as Bizarro, being the enemy of everything that's based on logic and reason,
when we should be viewed as Superman. Example: When I was 14 or 15 I came home walked in
room and a bunch of his dad's rooms looking at his trophies. Harry what did you get this one for,
and he repeated assuming he didn't hear him. Harry that's very rude, by ... Show more content on

The illusion is that their response to us is never actually based on us. It is based solely on our
behavior and how it relates to them. The mistake we make when we are young, because we are not
equipped to process what is happening to us, is to believe that others approve or disapprove of us
based on who we are. At the earliest age, we immediately are conditioned that when we act or talk in
a way that is in line with how someone wants us to act or talk, they approve of our behavior, and
more importantly, we are conditioned that when we act or speak in a way that isn't in line with how
someone wants us to act or speak there are usually negative consequences to us. This often causes to
act or speak in a way that seeks their approval which also is detrimental to ourselves. We are viewed
by a society to be outside of the norm and a problem if we think as an individual. The people that
label us with these stereotypes are often the ones who are unhappy and individually have already
quit on life. I have been called antisocial, sociopathic, difficult, and dysfunctional, along with many
other adjectives that the majority of society would deem to be stereotypically negative. In almost
every one of those instances, looking back, I realized that those adjectives were said to me
immediately after I would not do something that someone wanted me to do. It is considered
sociopathic for someone to ignore the

Who Is Bilbo In The Hobbit
The Hobbit: Bilbo is a hobbit that lives in the Shire. He is very well respected and lives a normal
life, but he is quite curious for a hobbit. One day he talks with a wizard named Gandalf and invites
him over for tea in a couple of days. Instead of Gandalf, thirteen dwarves (Balin, Dwalin, Oin,
Gloin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Ori, Dori, Nori, Fili, Kili and Thorin) show up. They tell him their
home, the Lonely Mountain, and its treasures were stolen by the dragon Smaug a long time ago and
that they want to go on a quest to reclaim it. Gandalf told them Bilbo is an excellent burglar so they
want him to join their company. Gandalf, Bilbo and the dwarves travel to Rivendell to ask the wise

Beorn helps them and provides them with food. When the goblins are gone they travel to the
Mirkwood, where Gandalf leaves them and tells them to stay on the path. Bilbo and the dwarves run
out of food and leave the path to find food and they see a banquet of the Wood–elves. Thorin gets
taken prisoner and giant spiders attack the rest of the dwarves. Bilbo uses his ring to become
invisible and free the dwarves. The other dwarves are taken prisoner as well and Bilbo, still
invisible, follows them. When the elves are at a feast he frees them by putting them in barrels that
are shipped to Esgaroth. The Master of Esgaroth helps the company to reach the Lonely Mountain in
time. It is Durin's Day and Thorin opens the secret door. Bilbo sneaks in and steals a golden cup
from Smaug and talks to him while Smaug cannot see him because of the ring. He notices Smaug
misses a scale in his armour. When he tells the dwarves about this, a thrush hears it too and flies to
Esgaroth to tell Bard the Bowman, an archer who can talk to thrushes. Smaug notices the cup has

The Fellowship Of The Ring
In the "Fellowship of the Ring" written by J.R.R. Tolkien and it reveals a new world of elves, magic,
men, dwarves, hobbits, and other unworldly creatures. Middle Earth is the name of the lands every
creature inhabits, and like our world, it is divided up and has different realms of elves, dwarves, men
and so forth. Much to my surprise I enjoyed the book and found it was very intriguing. While I was
reading further into the book I became more drawn into the plot and main characters. The
"Fellowship of the Ring" is part of a trilogy and I would enjoy reading the other two books in the
series. The story commences with a narrative speech spoken by Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit of the Shire,
and gives the reader the background of Middle Earth. Gandalf the Grey is in the Shire and decides to
visit Bilbo while he is getting ready for his 111th birthday, which commences the same night.
During the birthday party Bilbo decides to play a little trick on his guests with his special ring and
disappears before their very eyes as he slips on his ring. Bilbo runs to his home and packs up his
belongings and departs for a journey, while he's packing Gandalf arrives to speak to Bilbo. Before
Bilbo leaves the Shire, he leaves the ring and everyone of his belongings to Frodo. Frodo arrives

The One Ring In Tolkein's The Lord Of The Rings
The One Ring is perceived as the machine that has the ability to tempt any individual into using it
due to its great powers: "`It is by our own folly that the Enemy will defeat us,' cried Boromir. `How
it angers me! Fool! Obstinate fool! Running wilfully to death and ruining our cause. If any mortals
have claim to the Ring, it is the men of Númenor, and not Halflings. It is not yours save by unhappy
chance. It might have been mine. It should be mine. Give it to me! '" (Tolkein). Tolkein conveys the
concept and illustrates the power of fellowship throughout Frodo's journey to Mordor. Although the
Ring entices Frodo when he and his companions encounter the Black Riders, Frodo withstands the
temptation to use the Ring. Tolkein demonstrates how fellowship is ... Show more content on

After they encountered one of the Black Riders, Frodo admits that they are looking for him and it is
not safe for him to stay in the Shire, which causes the hobbits to volunteer to follow Frodo wherever
he plans to go: "'You can trust us to stick to you through thick and thin – to the bitter end. And you
can trust us to keep any secret of yours – closer than you keep it yourself. But you cannot trust us to
let you face trouble alone, and go off without a word'" (Tolkein 103). As they progressed, the
journey became more dangerous and ironically, Merry, Pippin, and Sam grew greater desire to
accompany Frodo. At Elrond's Council, this gives Gandalf the impression that the hobbits should be
members of the Company: "'I think, Elrond, that in this matter it would be well to trust rather to their
friendship than to great wisdom. Even if you chose for us an elf–lord, such as Glorfindel, he could
not storm the Dark Tower, nor open the road to the Fire by the power that is in him'" (Tolkein).

The Hobbit Compare And Contrast Bilbo And The Dwarves
"Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have
found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay." Gandalf
claims in the quote above from The Hobbit that great power isn't always necessary to accomplish
great feats. If ordinary people can work as a team, the outcome can defeat an individual with great
power. Bilbo and the dwarves assisted each other, and got help from other sources in order to
accomplish their goal and grow as characters. This teamwork and growth is shown throughout the
scenes of Rivendell, Mirkwood, and with Smaug.

When the dwarves finally arrive at Lake–Town, the men of the town treat them like kings. The men
give them food and hospitality, and they also help them get up to the Lonely Mountain. The help
from the men of Lake–Town allows the dwarves to be rested and ready to face the dragon. The
group works as a team to find the hidden door into the mountain. Bilbo can only get into the door
with the help of Thorin, the group's leader. Thorin unlocks the door with the key. Without the joint
effort between Thorin and Bilbo, the group wouldn't have made it into the mountain. Once the door
is open, Bilbo walks in, but Balin goes with him, because he wants to make sure Bilbo is safe.
"'Who is coming with me?' asked Bilbo. He didn't expect a chorus of volunteers, so he wasn't
disappointed. [...] The others made no pretence of offering– except old Balin, who was rather fond
of the hobbit" (Tolkien 213). This shows that the group cares about one another, and are working
together to complete their quest. The group is also helped by the men of Lake–Town and Thrush.
Once Bilbo finds that Smaug has a bare hole over his heart, he tells the other dwarves about the
dragon's weakness, and Thrush overhears. Thrush relays the information to the men in Lake–Town.

Sauron, Its Creator, the Lord of the Rings, and the utmost evil present in J.R.R. Tolkien's novels. But
the Ring never achieves Its goal because each character possesses a unique set of skills which resist
the evil temptations of the Ring. Gollum is the first victim of the Ring, with no knowledge of Its

expelled him from the family Gollum was lonely except for the company of the Ring. With no one

Hobbit And Greed
Tolkien wrote the Lord of the Rings using his world which had few moments of brightness, but were
clouded by the darkness of war and destruction. Tolkien served his country during World War 1 and
experienced the tragedies of the new modern combat of the time. When he was able to be with his
children, he was motivated to give them a better world to look at. Due to his studies in different
cultures and languages he was able to create Middle Earth, a land where there are elves, orcs,
dwarves, wizards, hobbits, humans, and many more mythical creatures some created by Tolkien
himself. Tolkien was motivated to create a new world for his children to experience instead of the
chaos filled world during their lives, and was inspired by his studies in ... Show more content on

Analysis Of The Book ' The ' R. Tolkien '
J.R.R. Tolkien was an amazing author who had the ability to forge stories that have captivated
audiences worldwide since the publishing of his first ever book. Part of this literary success comes
from his astounding character development; his way of writing causes the reader to truly feel what
his characters are experiencing and many a reader has cried at the death of a Tolkien character.
However, if most people attempt to think of one of his characters the first ones that come to mind
are males such as Aragorn and Frodo, when in all reality some of his most intriguing and subtly
pivotal characters are females. Galadriel, Lúthien, Arwen, and Éowyn are four of those such women
who are all individually different, although they can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For many long years I had pondered what I might do, should the Great Ring come into my hands,
and behold! It was brought within my grasp' . . . She lifted up her hand and from the ring that she
wore there issued a great light that illuminated her alone and left all else dark. She stood before
Frodo seeming now tall beyond measure, and beautiful beyond enduring, terrible and worshipful.
Then she let her hand fall, and the light faded, and suddenly she laughed again, and lo! She was
shrunken: a slender elf–woman, clad in simple white, whose gentle voice was soft and sad. 'I have
passed the test (The Fellowship 380–381).'" Galadriel is able to fight off the power of Sauron, a
powerful maiar, in this scene the reader is shown the power she could have had if she had chosen to
take the ring, however she turns down this immense power due to the evil she knows accompanies
it. The Lady Galadriel is grave, wise, beautiful, and powerful, truly she is a model of the perfect
women, whether it be elf or man.
The other idealist female crafted by Tolkien was the half elf, half maiar maiden Lúthien, child of
Thingol and Melian. Even when Lúthien is first introduced in the Silmarillion her gentle yet
powerful nature was made abundantly evident: "Keen, heart–piercing was her song as the song of

Fellowship Of The Ring Analysis
Cues 46, 47, and 48 in "The Fellowship of the Ring" present several different moods in a rather
short span of time. The themes and leitmotifs featured in these cues include the Rivendell theme,
which features the Weakness and Redemption eighth note leitmotif, the Evil Times theme, and the
song "Aniron." Just listening to these different musical moments, you can already hear the diverse
amount of action that takes place leading up to the creation of the fellowship while they are all
gathering in Rivendell. Cue 46 begins just as Boromir, Legolas, and Gimli arrive in Rivendell. The
music starts with low brass, which sounds like it is primarily trombone with some baritone and

going on in the brass, and you can still hear a lot of French horn. Sustained, low chords continue as
Arwen approaches Aragorn in the chamber as he is now looking at the blade of Narsil, Arwen asks
him, "why does he fear the past," while a whistle like sound comes into the score. It comes out even
more, much like a solo, as the long tones in the brass and low strings die away. The whistle then dies
away as Arwen attempts to ensure in Aragorn that he is not like Isildur and therefore won't make the
same mistakes he did. As Aragorn rebuttals with the fact that Isildur's blood runs through his veins,
mid strings come in with the "Weakness and Redemption" quote. The chords are in a lower range,
featuring the theme in the middle range instruments. All this time, Aragorn is still

Compare The Hobbit And The Hero Archetypal Journey
Almost every hero adventurous novel seems to follow the same structure, known as the Hero
Archetyapal journey; stages a hero must follow in order to obtain the reward he/she is seeking. The
Hobbit, a novel by J.R.R. Tolkien resembles similarly (keep one like resembles)to the Hero
Archetypal Journey. Bilbo, a secure and innocent hobbit joins the quest with a group of dwarves and
a wizard, Gandalf, to retrieve Thorin's kingdom hoard, stolen by a wicked dragon, Smaug. The most
important stage in The Hobbit is stage 7, tests, allies and enemies, because "they made Bilbo
stronger, braver and clever." (Cite from the level 4 exemplar) We see this occur when the company

Gandalf's promise had been proven true, and Bilbo had shown beyond doubt that he had something
special about him. This event had transformed the innocent hobbit into a clever being and also had
created trust for Bilbo among the company, since the dwarves could rely on the hobbit to save their
lives due to his excellent burglary. Secondly, the significance of allies in The Hobbit is that they
made Bilbo and company more stronger by providing aid and also gave wise advice which had been
useful later on in the novel. With the help of allies, Bilbo and company were able to continue their
journey, because without them it would be difficult to carry on, due to their limited knowledge and
supplies. After their long but short journey, encountering the gruesome trolls, the company finally
arrives at Rivendell, an Elf kingdom. Elrond, Lord of Rivendell is a great friend of Gandalf, thus an
ally for the company. Furthermore, before arriving at this elvish haven, Bilbo and company faced
extreme hunger and weakness, and the "elf–friend" (Tolkien, ), showed great support since, "All of
them, the ponies as well, grew refreshed and strong in a few day there. Their clothes were mended
as well as their bruises, their tempers and their hopes. Their bags were filled with food and
provisions light to carry but strong to bring them over the mountain passes. Their plans were
improved with the best advice." (Tolkien, 61).

Dwarves And Elves's Influence On The Character Of Elrond
When the characters arrive to Rivendell they were all surprised. Though Bilbo and the dwarves
didn't quite exactly have the same reaction. They came to the valley of Rivendell and were greeted
by singing elves. Bilbo love's elves, but dwarves don't exactly get along with them. Dwarves and
elves are traditional enemies so you can imagine what they thought of each other. Elrond was the
chief of the elves and an elf himself in Rivendell. In the book it says while he was looking at the a
map Elrond shook his head as if he altogether disapproved of dwarves. He already knew that
dwarves had a love of gold. On the other hand he hated the cruel wickedness of dragons. He grieved
to remember the destruction of the town of dale it burned it's banks of the bright river running. So

Archetypes In 'The Hero's Journey'
The Hero's Journey – Character Analysis
Explain which Archetypes are represented by which characters in the novel. Write a paragraph on
each of the 7 archetypes, explaining which character(s) represent the archetype (Remember that
there might be more than one character representing each archetype, some characters might embody
more than one archetype, and some archetypes might possibly be missing.)
The Hero
The Hobbit begins with the introduction of the hero of the story, Bilbo Baggins. He was called upon
by Gandalf to accompany him on an adventure to the Lonely Mountain, initially declining the offer.
However with much persuasion, Bilbo finally decides to join Gandalf and the dwarves. At the

There are multiple threshold guardians in the Hobbit however the main one is the meeting of the
trolls on page 49. The encounter with the trolls is the first time Bilbo has the opportunity to prove
himself to the dwarves, in this case leaving his comfort zone to become the "burglar". This situation
allows Bilbo to uncover the qualities he never knew he possessed. Other important examples of
threshold guardians in The Hobbit are the goblins, Gollum, spiders of Mirkwood, wood elves and
the dragon Smaug.
The Herald
In the Hero's Journey, heralds are responsible for introducing the quest to the hero. Not only is
Gandalf a mentor, but he is also the herald in The Hobbit. Without Gandalf, the story would almost
be non–existent as his archetype's purpose is to motivate the protagonist to begin the journey.
Gandalf's calling of Bilbo to the journey is introduced during the early stages of the novel (page 15),
however, Bilbo does not leave until page 45 where his decision was made on the spot.
Another example of a herald is the elf Elrond as he the one to inform the adventuring party about
Thorin's map and key, setting them on a journey to a secret passage way in to the Lonely

Rivendell And The Dwarve Essay
The dwarves and Bilbo finally arrive at Rivendell. They all react very differently. The dwarves
remember they do not like the elves. But Bilbo on the other hand likes the dwarves. And Elrond
thinks that the expedition for Smaug is foolish and risky. So they all leave with different opinions
but again all ready for more adventure.
The dwarves have a bad history with the elves. They do not very much like them, but they have to
deal with them sometimes. Rivendell is full of what the dwarves despise, but the dwarves must stop
at Rivendell for multiple reasons, like to talk to Elrond because they need to go over their journey
and find out a lot more about it. So the dwarves were nervous while visiting Rivendell. They were
definitely anxious about the elves.
Bilbo actually likes the elves. When he and the dwarves arrive at Rivendell, Bilbo is nervous and
excited for various reasons. He is nervous because the dwarves do not like the elves. They were
anxious and Bilbo knew something could go wrong so easily; that made him nervous. He likes and
adores elves, so he was happy to finally meet them. He definitely had mixed emotions when they
arrived at rivendell. Bilbo was happy but nervous at the same time. ... Show more content on

Fellowship Of The Ring Comparison Essay
The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the
Ring is about the first part of Frodo and his companions' quest to destroy the One Ring created by
the Dark Lord Sauron. Before this Bilbo Baggins is planning his 111th birthday party. Long before
the planning of the party Bilbo adopted Frodo Baggins, his second cousin, as his heir and Frodo
went to live with Bilbo. Bilbo and Frodo live in the small town called Hobbiton in the Shire. The
reason for this essay to be written to compare and contrast the numerous differences and similarities
between the book and movie of The Lord of the RIngs: Fellowship of the Ring. The amount of
similarities is not much more compared to the amount of differences because so many things were
changed to make the movie more appealing, but there are still many similarities . Gandalf, a wizard
who is also Bilbo's friend come to display fireworks. Bilbo disappears with a magic ring and is

Gandalf, but in the book a wizard named Radagast the Brown tells Gandalf that Saruman wanted to
speak to Gandalf who then imprisons Gandalf. This change is important because it makes Gandalf
seem more dependent of Saruman than he really is. Also, another difference is that in the movie at
the council of Elrond the members that accompany Frodo volunteer themselves, while in the book
the Elf Elrond chooses the members a few days

Comparisons Between Joseph Campbell's The Hero's Journey and The Lord of the Rings
1. The Call to Adventure
Frodo, the protagonist of The Fellowship of the Rings, is given his call to adventure at the Shire. It
occurs when Gandalf realizes that Bilbo Baggins' ring is in fact the One Ring of Sauron, the dark
lord. This ring contains great power and evil within it. Gandalf realizes the artifact's true danger, and
realizes it must be taken from the peaceful Shire. He entrusts the task of its transportation to Frodo
Baggins, the nephew of Bilbo, calling Frodo to his adventure. Hobbits such as he are ideal for this
mission due to their natural aversion to power. Coupled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One major challenge was in the Mines of Moria, after Pippin drew hordes of orcs and a cave troll to
their location. After being surrounded, the orcs flee in the presence of a demon known as Balrog. As
the mines collapse, Balrog falls into the chasm below. However, it manages to take Gandalf down
with it, leading to Frodo's abyss. This also evidences the archetype that Pippin holds (along with his
partner in crime, Merry) – a trickster. By shifting the balance of power in the scene and creating
trouble, Pippin matches the necessary requirements to be considered a trickster. Additionally,
Boromir created another obstacle for the fellowship, Frodo in particular. He is drawn to the ring's
power, and desires it. Though his intents are for good and are in an effort to protect his people, his
actions toward Frodo in a frenzy to procure the ring are dangerous to both of them. It is this
repressed emotion – almost antagonistic at times – that causes him to be a shadow. This challenge is
not overcome by either Frodo nor Boromir, but is nonetheless resolved after Boromir's death.
4. The Abyss
The abyss originally begins with the loss of Gandalf, a mentor. Sadness washes over the Fellowship
with the loss of the gray wizard. Gandalf provided wisdom and knowledge of all creatures and
places, and was the reason Frodo began his journey originally. Therefore, Frodo feels that there is no
way to recover from this wound, and that practically all hope is lost. He realizes their chances of
success are slim, for he is without a steady, guiding figure.

it looks like Gandalf, but how can it be/ Frodo also sees Bilbo walking restlessly. He sees a dark
ship and a white fortress with seven towers and then he sees a single eye that fills the whole mirror.
The eye is looking everywhere for Frodo. It is the eye of Sauron. Galadriel stops him before the
weight of the Ring around his neck pulls him into the water. She knows that he sees Sauron, because
sees him, too. Sauron would like to gain access to Galadriel's mind because she carries an elvish
ring of Power, Nenya, and the Ring of Adamant. Galadriel tells Frodo that his coming puts the Elves
in a dilemma. If Frodo fails in his quest, Sauron will take over the world and destroy everything,
even Lothlorien. If he succeeds, the power of the Three Rings of the Elves will fade, and Lothlorien
will die; the Elves will pass into the west, and her people will forgotten in Middle earth. The elves
are willing to accept that fate if it means that they will be free of Sauron. Frodo offers Galadriel the

The Hobbit Greed
American literature
In The Hobbit we are exposed to a world were the most unanticipated and simple creatures are
expected to fulfill a great destiny or special purpose. These callings are similar to ones we find in our
faith. Throughout the book we see themes of prophecy, the unexpected strength of an underdog, and
corruption through greed which all coincide nicely with Christianity. Tolkien's work not only retains
gods word but he expands on it through the exciting world of a small hobbit named Bilbo.
Initially, In order for the company to reach its destination (the lonely mountain) they must seek
advice in Rivendell, where the elvish king Elrond is asked to not only identify the swords but to also
interpret Thorin's map. As Elrond observes the moon letters he reads, "stand by the grey stone when
the thrush knocks, and the setting sun with the last night of Durin's day will shine upon the key
hole." (Tolkien 53) . just as the maps authors had predicted there was a key hole that appeared to

called to fulfill our own roles on Earth. Gandalf even states at the closing of the hobbit "you don't

sole benefit? You are a fine person, Mr. Baggins , and I am very fond of you ; but you are only quite

Bilbo and the dwarves had taken his advice properly, the dwarves could be very stubborn. Gandalf,
of course, was thinking entirely about them when he had left for the west for if the wizard had

Examples Of Indirect Characterization In The Hobbit
Every author wants their readers to be engrossed in the story whether it be that a character or
characters are relatable in some way to the reader, the plot, or the story itself. In order to create the
characters or even the plot line the author needs to make it interesting for the reader to read. Authors
use multiple stylistic choices throughout their story, and the readers may not even know that they are
reading over the choices useless they are purposefully looking for it. In J.R.R Tolkien's book The
Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins is forced to accompany a group of dwarves: Thorin, Balin, Dwalin, Dori,
Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Fili, Kili, and Gandalf the wizard. They start their quest
to take back their homeland from the dragon Smaug. Throughout the story they experience many
difficult tasks, such as walking through a forest that is infested with giant spiders, battling goblins
that live in the mountains, and Gollum, a malnourished man in desperate need of a therapist. J.R.R.
Tolkien utilizes indirect and direct characterization to help the readers understand the characters and
help to justify their actions.
Tolkien builds the characters through indirect characterization to provide the readers insight on the
character. As Tolkien introduces Bilbo, he helps to build his personality. Bilbo's personality shows
through when all the dwarves are entering his house and he wonders "whether they would stay [for]
supper" (Tolkien 10). Through this you can tell that

The Last Homely House
At this point in time no one has had any reason to believe the necromancer and Sauron are one and
the same. We know it, of course, but to them it would be absolutely logical to assume some idiot
wants to revive Sauron through necromancy. Also, Thorin knowing the other royal houses sounded
logical to me (what he says about Gondor is actually canon), and I can't believe Thorin and Bilbo
had a civilised conversation. The rumours are true: it really takes a catastrophe for them to get along.
Temporarily. I really can't see them not falling back into old habits. Now that they are out of
Rivendell again, I need to say a few things about Elves and all that. Rivendell is often called "The

Valinor west of the sea. It's also not an inn, but an actual stronghold and a safe haven for Elves.

Tolkien's Female Characters in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy
In Tolkien's Middle Earth, women are generally expected to submit to patriarchal authority. To what
extent does Tolkien present women who succeed in subverting this norm?
J.R.R. Tolkien's works have been analysed for decades and have often been criticised for the lack of
female characters. Arguably his most cherished publications, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, in
particular has been condemned for the passivity of his relatively few female characters. Having said
that however, throughout the three books, there are a number of female characters who combat the
stereotypical role of women and subvert the norm of submission to a patriarchal authority. Arwen,

father's wishes and embarks on the journey with the Elven people to the Havens, she returns to
Rivendell after she has a vision of what she believes to be her future, and confronts her father with
it. The vision was of her son and Aragorn, a vision which brings her hope and strengthens her will to
remain in Middle Earth. This strength is different to what was expected of women at that time. It
allows Arwen to rebel against her father's will and follow the destiny she chooses for herself. Her
choice, however, is ironic because she longs to fulfill the duties of a housewife, which other female
characters in the Lord of the Rings rebel against, such as Éowyn.
Arwen's most prominent significant relationship is with Aragorn, which in itself is a conflicted one.
While Arwen's desire is to be with him, she puts her duties to her people and her father before him.

After which he puts on his ring of invisibility and taunts the spiders into following him away from
his friends. He then doubles back and cuts his friends out of their respective webs. After that there is
a long battle the spiders venom had weakened the dwarves almost to a point that they couldn't stand.
So Bilbo had to do most of the fighting. He saved his friends. They get away and all live happily
ever after… right? No there will be more danger this is only the beginning. After all of Bilbo's
friends are saved elves capture them. It is a good thing Bilbo has his ring on. He follows the elves
and gets into the place in which they are captured. He then hatches a plan to save them. He has to
steal a key when there is a large banquet happening so as most of the elves are busy, then he must
release his friends and stow them away in barrels that are to be sent down the river having been

out of tight situations. He releases his friends much to all the elves dismay. Then after all the trouble
you would think the rest to be a walk in the park. It is just not that easy. Now they must face a
dragon, to claim the treasure they were after from the beginning. Bilbo goes into the dragon's cave
silently and invisibly but the dragon has an astute sense of smell! Bilbo has been caught. However
not completely caught because the dragon can still not

Compare And Contrast Bilbo And The Dwarfs In The Hobbit
How would one feel if they walked into a spooky, unfamiliar place for a while? In The Hobbit,
Bilbo visits Rivendell in the new and wild terrain, the Misty Mountains. The terrain gave the
dwarves and Bilbo many different feelings. The inhabitants of the Misty Mountains affect the way
they feel toward the dwarfs and Bilbo. Bilbo, the dwarves, and the elves have their own aspects of
certain subjects. First, Bilbo and the dwarfs have very different feelings toward Rivendell. Bilbo
loved Rivendell when he visited it, even though they knew a great deal about him and he had never
seen them before. He loved elves and he also loved the great food there too. The dwarfs had a
different aspect toward Rivendell, and it was one quite different than Bilbo's.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is an epic adventure
through the mythical world of Middle Earth and the kingdoms that encompass it. The world is in
turmoil, a dark and powerful enemy named Sauron has returned. This story includes many diverse
races throughout this vast continent. Hobbits, elves, dwarves, wizards, and men must once again
work together to defeat this long–forgotten adversary. The ring of power has been found, and the
Dark Lord desperately wants it back. The ever–present evil of the ring entices even the most selfless
individuals' desire to possess the ring and to utilize its power. True wisdom is the ability to
recognize personal weaknesses and to resist the temptation of the ring. ... Show more content on

With their help the hobbits make it to Rivendell where they are re–united with Gandalf and Bilbo.
The Elven Lord Elrond convenes a council where the ring is discussed at great length and Frodo
learns how powerful it truly is, because even the wise wizard Saruman the White has been possessed
by Saruman. "It is perilous to study too deeply the arts of the Enemy, for good or for ill." Saruman's
desire for knowledge of the ring left him vulnerable to Sauron's evil, and now he has become a pawn
to the Dark Lord. Also present at this council is Boromir from the kingdom of Gondor. When he
learns of the power of the ring, he immediately desires it and asserts that he will use its great power
to destroy their enemy and bring peace. Elrond wisely responds, "We cannot use the Ruling Ring.
That we now know too well. It belongs to Sauron and was made by him alone, and is altogether evil.
Its strength, Boromir, is too great for anyone to wield at will, save only those who have already a
great power of their own. But for them it holds an even deadlier peril. The very desire of it corrupts
the heart." It is decided the ring must be destroyed in the place that it was made, Sauron's kingdom
of Mordor. Frodo agrees to accompany and hold the ring, and he is escorted on this quest by:
Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Boromir, Pippin, Merry, and Sam. Elrond thusly titles the nine of

Heroic Characters in The Lord of the Rings Saga Essay
Throughout literary history, heroes are usually described as being good looking and tall. People who
are categorized as heroes need to have a distinguished courage and heroes are often rewarded for
their courageous and noble acts. A hero needs to be liked by the inhabitants of his or her country
because he or she committed a heroic act such saving a child who has fallen into a well. In many
books, the character with all of the heroic qualities is often the main character. Although some
characters from the Lord of the Rings saga perfectly fit this description like Aragorn and Boromir,
most heroic characters in this novel are quite unlikely. Frodo and his friends are unusual creatures
called Halfling, more popularly called Hobbits. Before ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After having smoked and enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the shire, they go back inside for a second
breakfast. Their relaxed habits and loose physical shapes make them unlikely for an adventure of
such stature. It is quite obvious that Hobbits are quiet, relaxed and clam people which makes the
reader wonder "how?" and "why?" a Hobbit would participate in such journey. Well, for all of the
things that Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin have been through, any reader can see that these Hobbits
have good spirits, great courage and strength. Frodo was not like Bilbo he did not want to go on an
adventure, he really wanted to stay home. But since Gandalf was one of Frodo's good friends, Frodo
decided to take the ring for Gandalf even though he knew of its perils. Throughout the novel, Frodo
shows an immense sense of courage. For instance, when the kings of death, Nazgul, were following
Frodo and his friends, Frodo knew that he was outnumbered and physically outmatched, but he still
kept on going. Also, one of Frodo's best friends–and also his gardener–was Samwise Gamgee.
Samwise was a strange and funny Hobbit and the son of the old Gaffer. Since Sam was a gardener
for Frodo he was often around the house. One day, Sam overheard a conversation between Gandalf
and Frodo. They were talking about rings, kings and Dark Lords. Gandalf caught Samwise and
made him Frodo's companion. From here on out, Sam was

Bilbo's Journey In The Fellowship Of The Rings
The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien is a book about many things. Mostly it's an adventure
of a lifetime for a young hobbit named Frodo. In The Fellowship of the Ring there are two hobbits
named Bilbo, and Frodo Baggins. Bilbo is Frodo's uncle who went on an incredible adventure and
obtained a ring from a hobbit named Gollum. That ring once belonged to Sauron, the dark lord of
Mordor. Without knowing that fact, Bilbo had kept the ring for years. Eventually his dear friend
Gandalf the Grey had suspicions of the rings, and had Bilbo give it to his heir Frodo before he left
for Rivendell. Frodo received a mission from Gandalf to get rid of the ring in Rivendell, the home of
the elves. To accompany Frodo on his journey, three other young hobbits went along. Those hobbits
were Sam, Pippin, and Merry. Along their journey to Rivendell they came across many obstacles,
but they finally made it. When they arrived they had met Bilbo there. Elrond, the elf king decided to

Bilbo was drawn to the ring along with anyone else that was near it, but no one ever knew why.
Gandalf had his suspicions about the ring, and when he confirmed his suspicions he needed to stop
it, but he couldn't do it himself. He needed the help of the young hobbit, Frodo. He had Frodo take
the ring to Rivendell to learn more about the ring. When he arrived to Rivendell he met with a
counsel of elves who explained the Ring to him. They told him about Sauron, and the creation of the
ring. "You will learn that your trouble is but part of the trouble of all the western world. The Ring!
What shall we do with the Ring, the least of rings, the trifle that Sauron fancies? That is the doom
that we all must deem." ( Tolkien 236). This quote is Elrond speaking to Frodo in regards to the One
Ring. He is about to tell him the details of the ring and

What Is Bilbo's Transformation In The Hobbit
People have different responses to the environment, people's action, and what they value. The same
goes for the characters in J.R.R Tolkien's book The Hobbit as they discover Rivendell, how the
people of Rivendell feel about the dwarves, and what the people of Rivendell value. Bilbo and his
throng have different perspectives of the village Rivendell, as Bilbo and his companions make their
way through the Misty Mountains they soon discover the village of Rivendell where the elves live.
When Bilbo arrives at Rivendell he is simple astonished by the men and women. Bilbo enjoyed his
short visit there. This is revealed when, "Bilbo would gladly have stopped there for ever and ever.."
This shows that Bilbo enjoyed staying at the village and wouldn't mind staying a while. The
dwarves on the other hand had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The throng is very restless but discover the town of Rivendell, where the folk seem kind. Even
though the elves seem kind they are really playful, as the dwarves arrive the elves tend to tease them
about their beards and seem to think that their love of gold is very foolish. In the novel it states, "and
then they went down to the water to see the elves dance and sing upon the midsummer's eve." This
shows that even though the elves seem very serious people in their heart they value being cheerful in
all kinds of ways. In conclusion, everyone has different emotions about different situations. The
throng had very different views about the village of Rivendell and the folk that live there. Bilbo's
was positive about Rivendell because of the folk who live there, the dwarves were negative because
the elves made fun of them. Elrond the master of the house wasn't very fond of the dwarves and the
expedition because he saw it as being foolish. Lastly, the elves of Rivendell value the cheerfulness
of their hearts because of the way they tease others and tend to play

Examples Of Appendixes In The Fellowship Of The Ring
As more of a side character in The Fellowship of the Ring, we see hardly any of Aragorn's inner
feelings and emotion, just what Frodo himself perceives. However, through the appendixes, I know
of the great love between Aragorn son of Arathorn and the Lady Arwen Undómiel; daughter of Lord
Elrond and Evenstar of her people. Betrothed before the story starts, there is little seen through the
Fellowship of the ring to even suggest a relationship between the two. Yet, with the information
from the appendixes, much can be interpreted from the few mentions made of the lovers. For
example, when Aragorn mentions his heart lies in Rivendell, or when he breathes Arwen's name to a
flower upon Cerin Amroth– the hill in Lothlórien where they were betrothed

Similarities Between Gawain And Beowulf

  • 1. Similarities Between Gawain And Beowulf Dominique Mendieta Mr. Green English 4 19 October 2014 The Fellowship of the Ring The story of The Lord of the Rings contains many aspects from Anglo–Saxon epic, Beowulf, and Anglo–Norman romance, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Certain components from these works are found in Frodo, a hero from The Fellowship of the Rings. These three characters; Frodo, Beowulf, and Sir Gawain, all have their similarities and differences. Despite the obvious connections between these characters, there are some significant traits that single out Frodo as a new type of hero. While the similarities create parallels between the Tolkien text and the older works, the differences between all these works is what singles out Frodo Baggins from the other heroes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These significant traits that single out Frodo from Beowulf and Sir Gawain are the differences from each other. The difference between Frodo and Beowulf would be that Beowulf is extremely arrogant about how he kills Grendel with just his bare hands. Frodo and many other characters in The Lord of the Rings do what they do to help Middle–earth not to prove how strong they are but instead to save all of Middle–earth from Sauron and his evil army. Even though Frodo did give into temptation just as how Sir Gawain did he didn't allow that to define him. Frodo still went on with the quest to Mordor knowing there is still some hope that he can accomplish this important task while knowing the fate of Middle–earth is resting upon his shoulders. Frodo Baggins shows every single of these attributes. You see his bravery and courage come from him when he accepts to take the ring to Mordor knowing that he will encounter many dangers. Even if Frodo does have many flaws such as being a hobbit, he is still able to go through many obstacles with or without the Fellowship. Ultimately from these similarities and differences, Tolkien's Frodo Baggins serves as a new hero with brave, courageous, and flawed qualities. Tolkien takes certain aspects from Beowulf and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight but in addition he throws in some significant qualities to make a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Examples Of Courage In The Hobbit Owen Mattern Ms. Schonewise Social Lit. 25 September 2017 Expanding Courage "All we have to decide is what we do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, besides the will of evil" (Tolkien 304). Growth and courage are both vital actions in life. One cannot hope to live and thrive without growing both internally and externally, and having the courage to stand up for what one's beliefs. Courage is directly affected by growth, for without growth, one will never obtain the courage to move on and push forward when times get tough in life. Stepping out of one's comfort zone takes immense growth and no small amount of courage, but can prove to be a pivotal moment within climactic events. In his epic tale ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the first chapters of The Hobbit, Bilbo is portrayed in this manner, but Tolkien brilliantly changes Bilbo little by little to symbolize the importance of growing, maturing, and finding courage to stand up for what is right. Another great example for the need of growth and courage that Tolkien highlights in the early parts of his work The Hobbit, is showing how obsessed Bilbo Baggins is with his possessions. "Tell me Bilbo, when did doilies and your mother's dishes become so important to you? The world is not in your books and maps. It's out there" (Tolkien 17). Through this quote, Tolkien shows how self–centered people become so involved with themselves, they start to care too much for the things that matter least. Bilbo for example, has no interest in his approaching journey, rather he is fussing over his dishes and cloths, casting away the needs of others and the outside world. Much like Tolkien's famous character, so many people are worried about just themselves. They have no interest in the outside would and their growth stops and courage hinders. A person can be very well off but if they are so wrapped up with their own affairs, and do not experience the world they cannot grow and mature. Without growing and maturing, real world issues aren't addressed and communication becomes surreal. No one knows how to address these issues and that just creates more anarchy. Real world experience is key to growth. Growth is key to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Hobbit Bilbo Baggins When the eccentric hobbit Bilbo Baggins leaves his home in the Shire, he gives his greatest treasure to his heir Frodo: a magic ring that makes its wearer invisible. Because of the difficulty Bilbo has in giving the ring away, his friend the wizard Gandalf the Grey suspects that the ring is more than it appears. Some years later, Gandalf reveals to Frodo that the ring is in fact the One Ring, forged by Sauron the Dark Lord thousands of years before to enable him to dominate and enslave all of Middle–earth. Gandalf tells Frodo that the Ring must be destroyed to defeat Sauron's evil, but he also warns him that the Enemy has learned of the Ring's whereabouts from the creature Gollum and will seek to find it and kill its bearer. Despite the danger and hopelessness of the quest, Frodo accepts the burden and resolves to take the Ring to the safety of the elven stronghold of Rivendell. • 9. Frodo's Seed of Courage Frodo's Seed of Courage Essay Courage is an essential quality that is found in every archetypal hero. Courage is defined as the quality of mind and spirit that enables an individual to face difficulty, danger, and pain without fear. An individual is not born with a courageous heart, but instead develops courage through experience of difficulty and danger. The stimulation of courage is analogous to the growth of a beautiful flower. Courage starts off as a seed which is planted in the soil of the individual's heart. The planting of the seed is usually initiated by a courageous act during a time of difficulty or danger. As an individual experiences many of these dangerous and difficult circumstances, the individual's courage begins ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Frodo's willingness to face even greater dangers clearly demonstrates that his courage continues to grow. Frodo once again shows his constant growth of courage during the journey through the Mines of Moria. When the Fellowship is venturing in the Mines of Moria, they run into a large group of orcs. As one of the orcs tries to break into the room that the Fellowship is trapped in, Boromir strikes at the arm of the orc. Although Boromir is a powerful warrior, his sword does nothing and slips from his hands. After Boromir fails to harm the orc, "Suddenly, and to his own surprise, Frodo felt a hot wrath blaze up in his heart. ̒ The Shire! ̓ he cried, and springing beside Boromir, he stooped , and stabbed with Sting at the hideous foot" (364). Consequently, Frodo's courage overpowers Boromir's brute strength. Furthermore, Frodo's attack on an individual orc causes his courage to grow strong enough to fight against a hoard of orcs. After Frodo and the Fellowship kill thirteen orcs, the rest of the orcs temporarily run away giving time for the Fellowship to escape. Following the Council of Elrond and the journey through the Mines of Moria, Frodo's courage becomes more natural, thus revealing that Frodo's courage is near full growth. Frodo shows full transformation into a courageous individual at Lórien and through his most courageous act of all at Amon Hen. Frodo first shows his full transformation into a courageous ... How Is Fodo Baggins Selfish Frodo Baggins was just another ordinary Hobbit living in the Shire, but he matured into an unexpected hero who was renowned for destroying the one Ring to rule them all. Frodo Baggins is the son of Drogo Baggins and Primula Brandybuck. He was a Hobbit of the Shire during the Third Age. When Frodo was young, he spent the majority of the time at the Brandy Hall in Buckland. When he was a child, Frodo was known to be a rascal. He became friends with Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took causing trouble everywhere they went to. Hobbits love mushrooms, so Frodo, Merry, and Pippin would often steal mushrooms from Farmer Maggot's farm in the Marish region of the East Farthing of the Shire. In the War of the Rings, Sam and Frodo struggles more with internal conflicts that they must overcome through strength of will and character with the dangers they encounter along the road. The first scene of the film opens with Sam asleep and Frodo awake. After looking around, Frodo pulls at his shirt collar and pulls out the Ring as an expression of conflicted longing. The internal conflict of Sam and Frodo is in truth. Frodo's struggle is to escape the power of the Ring while Sam's struggle is to stop Frodo from loosing himself to the Ring's will. He was the complete antithesis of Superman in every way: his attire, his thought process, the way he speaks, the way that he acts, and how he processes information. This is similar to the world that we live and have been raised in. Everything that we've experienced is the polar opposite of everything that we've learned. The problem with this is that we are viewed as Bizarro, being the enemy of everything that's based on logic and reason, when we should be viewed as Superman. At the earliest age, we immediately are conditioned that when we act or talk in a way that is in line with how someone wants us to act or talk, they approve of our behavior, and more importantly, we are conditioned that when we act or speak in a way that isn't in line with how someone wants us to act or speak there are usually negative consequences to us. Write a paragraph on each of the 7 archetypes, explaining which character(s) represent the archetype (Remember that there might be more than one character representing each archetype, some characters might embody more than one archetype, and some archetypes might possibly be missing.) The Hero The Hobbit begins with the introduction of the hero of the story, Bilbo Baggins. There are multiple threshold guardians in the Hobbit however the main one is the meeting of the trolls on page 49. The encounter with the trolls is the first time Bilbo has the opportunity to prove himself to the dwarves, in this case leaving his comfort zone to become the "burglar". This situation allows Bilbo to uncover the qualities he never knew he possessed. Other important examples of threshold guardians in The Hobbit are the goblins, Gollum, spiders of Mirkwood, wood elves and the dragon Smaug. The Herald In the Hero's Journey, heralds are responsible for introducing the quest to the hero. Not only is Gandalf a mentor, but he is also the herald in The Hobbit. Without Gandalf, the story would almost be non–existent as his archetype's purpose is to motivate the protagonist to begin the journey. Gandalf's calling of Bilbo to the journey is introduced during the early stages of the novel (page 15), however, Bilbo does not leave until page 45 where his decision was made on the spot. Another example of a herald is the elf Elrond as he the one to inform the adventuring party about Thorin's map and key, setting them on a journey to a secret passage way in to the Lonely ... But Bilbo on the other hand likes the dwarves. And Elrond thinks that the expedition for Smaug is foolish and risky. So they all leave with different opinions but again all ready for more adventure. The dwarves have a bad history with the elves. They do not very much like them, but they have to deal with them sometimes. Rivendell is full of what the dwarves despise, but the dwarves must stop at Rivendell for multiple reasons, like to talk to Elrond because they need to go over their journey and find out a lot more about it. So the dwarves were nervous while visiting Rivendell. They were definitely anxious about the elves. Bilbo actually likes the elves. When he and the dwarves arrive at Rivendell, Bilbo is nervous and excited for various reasons. He is nervous because the dwarves do not like the elves. This change is important because it makes Gandalf seem more dependent of Saruman than he really is. The Call to Adventure Frodo, the protagonist of The Fellowship of the Rings, is given his call to adventure at the Shire. It occurs when Gandalf realizes that Bilbo Baggins' ring is in fact the One Ring of Sauron, the dark lord. This ring contains great power and evil within it. Gandalf realizes the artifact's true danger, and realizes it must be taken from the peaceful Shire. After being surrounded, the orcs flee in the presence of a demon known as Balrog. As the mines collapse, Balrog falls into the chasm below. However, it manages to take Gandalf down with it, leading to Frodo's abyss. This also evidences the archetype that Pippin holds (along with his partner in crime, Merry) – a trickster. By shifting the balance of power in the scene and creating trouble, Pippin matches the necessary requirements to be considered a trickster. Additionally, Boromir created another obstacle for the fellowship, Frodo in particular. He is drawn to the ring's power, and desires it. Though his intents are for good and are in an effort to protect his people, his actions toward Frodo in a frenzy to procure the ring are dangerous to both of them. It is this repressed emotion – almost antagonistic at times – that causes him to be a shadow. This challenge is not overcome by either Frodo nor Boromir, but is nonetheless resolved after Boromir's death. 4. The Abyss The abyss originally begins with the loss of Gandalf, a mentor. Sadness washes over the Fellowship with the loss of the gray wizard. Gandalf provided wisdom and knowledge of all creatures and places, and was the reason Frodo began his journey originally. Therefore, Frodo feels that there is no way to recover from this wound, and that practically all hope is lost. He realizes their chances of success are slim, for he is without a steady, guiding figure. 5. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. The Hobbit Greed American literature In The Hobbit we are exposed to a world were the most unanticipated and simple creatures are expected to fulfill a great destiny or special purpose. These callings are similar to ones we find in our faith. Throughout the book we see themes of prophecy, the unexpected strength of an underdog, and corruption through greed which all coincide nicely with Christianity. Tolkien's work not only retains gods word but he expands on it through the exciting world of a small hobbit named Bilbo. Initially, In order for the company to reach its destination (the lonely mountain) they must seek advice in Rivendell, where the elvish king Elrond is asked to not only identify the swords but to also interpret Thorin's map. • 57. Examples Of Indirect Characterization In The Hobbit Every author wants their readers to be engrossed in the story whether it be that a character or characters are relatable in some way to the reader, the plot, or the story itself. In order to create the characters or even the plot line the author needs to make it interesting for the reader to read. Authors use multiple stylistic choices throughout their story, and the readers may not even know that they are reading over the choices useless they are purposefully looking for it. In J.R.R Tolkien's book The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins is forced to accompany a group of dwarves: Thorin, Balin, Dwalin, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Fili, Kili, and Gandalf the wizard. They start their quest to take back their homeland from the dragon Smaug. Throughout the story they experience many difficult tasks, such as walking through a forest that is infested with giant spiders, battling goblins that live in the mountains, and Gollum, a malnourished man in desperate need of a therapist. J.R.R. Tolkien utilizes indirect and direct characterization to help the readers understand the characters and help to justify their actions. Tolkien builds the characters through indirect characterization to provide the readers insight on the character. As Tolkien introduces Bilbo, he helps to build his personality. Bilbo's personality shows through when all the dwarves are entering his house and he wonders "whether they would stay [for] supper" (Tolkien 10). Through this you can tell that ... Also, Thorin knowing the other royal houses sounded logical to me (what he says about Gondor is actually canon), and I can't believe Thorin and Bilbo had a civilised conversation. The rumours are true: it really takes a catastrophe for them to get along. Temporarily. I really can't see them not falling back into old habits. Now that they are out of Rivendell again, I need to say a few things about Elves and all that. To what extent does Tolkien present women who succeed in subverting this norm? J.R.R. Tolkien's works have been analysed for decades and have often been criticised for the lack of female characters. Arguably his most cherished publications, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, in particular has been condemned for the passivity of his relatively few female characters. Although at first Arwen honours her father's wishes and embarks on the journey with the Elven people to the Havens, she returns to Rivendell after she has a vision of what she believes to be her future, and confronts her father with it. The vision was of her son and Aragorn, a vision which brings her hope and strengthens her will to remain in Middle Earth. This strength is different to what was expected of women at that time. It allows Arwen to rebel against her father's will and follow the destiny she chooses for herself. That ring once belonged to Sauron, the dark lord of Mordor. Without knowing that fact, Bilbo had kept the ring for years. Eventually his dear friend Gandalf the Grey had suspicions of the rings, and had Bilbo give it to his heir Frodo before he left for Rivendell. Frodo received a mission from Gandalf to get rid of the ring in Rivendell, the home of the elves. To accompany Frodo on his journey, three other young hobbits went along. Those hobbits were Sam, Pippin, and Merry. Along their journey to Rivendell they came across many obstacles, but they finally made it. When they arrived they had met Bilbo there. Gandalf had his suspicions about the ring, and when he confirmed his suspicions he needed to stop it, but he couldn't do it himself. He needed the help of the young hobbit, Frodo. He had Frodo take the ring to Rivendell to learn more about the ring. When he arrived to Rivendell he met with a counsel of elves who explained the Ring to him. They told him about Sauron, and the creation of the ring. "You will learn that your trouble is but part of the trouble of all the western world. The Ring! What shall we do with the Ring, the least of rings, the trifle that Sauron fancies? That is the doom that we all must deem." ( Tolkien 236). • 75. What Is Bilbo's Transformation In The Hobbit People have different responses to the environment, people's action, and what they value. The same goes for the characters in J.R.R Tolkien's book The Hobbit as they discover Rivendell, how the people of Rivendell feel about the dwarves, and what the people of Rivendell value. Bilbo and his throng have different perspectives of the village Rivendell, as Bilbo and his companions make their way through the Misty Mountains they soon discover the village of Rivendell where the elves live. When Bilbo arrives at Rivendell he is simple astonished by the men and women. Bilbo enjoyed his short visit there. This is revealed when, "Bilbo would gladly have stopped there for ever and ever.." This shows that Bilbo enjoyed staying at the village and wouldn't mind staying a while. The dwarves on the other hand had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The throng is very restless but discover the town of Rivendell, where the folk seem kind. Even though the elves seem kind they are really playful, as the dwarves arrive the elves tend to tease them about their beards and seem to think that their love of gold is very foolish. In the novel it states, "and then they went down to the water to see the elves dance and sing upon the midsummer's eve." This shows that even though the elves seem very serious people in their heart they value being cheerful in all kinds of ways. In conclusion, everyone has different emotions about different situations. The throng had very different views about the village of Rivendell and the folk that live there. Bilbo's was positive about Rivendell because of the folk who live there, the dwarves were negative because the elves made fun of them. Elrond the master of the house wasn't very fond of the dwarves and the expedition because he saw it as being foolish. Lastly, the elves of Rivendell value the cheerfulness of their hearts because of the way they tease others and tend to play ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Examples Of Appendixes In The Fellowship Of The Ring As more of a side character in The Fellowship of the Ring, we see hardly any of Aragorn's inner feelings and emotion, just what Frodo himself perceives. However, through the appendixes, I know of the great love between Aragorn son of Arathorn and the Lady Arwen Undómiel; daughter of Lord Elrond and Evenstar of her people. Betrothed before the story starts, there is little seen through the Fellowship of the ring to even suggest a relationship between the two. Yet, with the information from the appendixes, much can be interpreted from the few mentions made of the lovers. For example, when Aragorn mentions his heart lies in Rivendell, or when he breathes Arwen's name to a flower upon Cerin Amroth– the hill in Lothlórien where they were betrothed ...
