Research Paper On Tamales
Each year my family celebrates Christmas eve by making a lot of tamales and lots of food for the
whole family, my cousins and uncles and aunties come over to eat and to have a good time. once the
clock gets to 12:00 all the kids open their presents and after every kid has opened their present now
its the adults turn to open their present. However the adults do secret Santa and after we are done
with all that we get to go to sleep. On Christmas day we dont really do much besides eat the
leftovers from Christmas eve and talk about the type of presents that we got for Christmas. The
thing that I dont like about it is that they make too much tamales and we are stuck with eating
tamales for like a week and that when we open our presents on Christmas

Houston Research Paper
In Houston, there are no limitations of the food that can be found around the city. Houston is fully
diverse with countless traditions that have been passed down. The best we learn about the cultures is
through food; a realization that not everybody acknowledges. These cultures has even expanded to
school lunches in Cypress and Katy, to be more diverse rather than just serving hot dogs and
burgers. As a Hispanic teenager, I am pleased to have been exposed by the many meals and
traditions of Mexican, Salvadoran, and other heritages.
For the simple reason that I am Hispanic I am expected to grow accustomed to the various spices
that the rest of my family eats. However, I am so cautious around sauces and spices. This is from the

From then I would get ketchup myself. Gradually over time, I grew comfortable to eating my dad's
sauces to which I would say "Pa, la salsa es muy buena" Translated is that, "Dad the sauce is really
good." To which I have repeatedly said at family meals.
Another great sense of food is the warm soft tortillas that carry delicious pieces of juicy beef fajita.
At restaurants, the sight of the steam leaving the food, creates a mouth to water as well as a pleasant
feeling of home. However, not every place is going to capture the appetizing taste of food. Say for
example, school. I remember one time in elementary they were serving tamales. I was so excited to
see a Hispanic dish, I know I had the biggest smile on my face. I continued to my class table and sat
down. All of a sudden my friend sitting across from me, a friend that happens to be Asian,
questioned, "You like that?" Bluntly, I responded "Yeah, why?" In which he responded, "Oh, I didn't
like it." Tamales, might I add is special occasion meal, that is prepared in a dried corn husk. Masa de

chicken, pork, or cheese. Then the components would be wrapped by the corn husk to be

The Importance Of Food Culture
Most people want to find out who they really are. We can first start by looking at their food culture.
Food culture is a very important element that makes us who we are. From a young child to an adult
most people have developed their food culture by trial and error or simply by their preference. Food
culture is different for every ethnicity from the holidays to the meals themselves. Araceli is someone
important to me and hands down her food culture is very different from my own. Nicaraguan food is
very different from my culture which is Mexican food getting to know about her food culture helped
me get to know Araceli that much more. My food culture is based off my Mexican roots, which
most people might think it is just beans and rice. Although that is partially true, most known dishes
revolve around parties and holiday dinners. During these events we usually have tamales which is a
popular dish and is served with sides of rice and beans of course. Food around this time is special
because food gathers everyone together. Tamales take hours to prepare and usually my family gets a
day to prepare for our feast. Tamales are very popular, and most people make them the same way. I
recently found out that Mexicans are not the only ones who make their style of tamales. For
Aracelis' culture, although the dishes are familiar the preparation itself is completely different.
Tamales are still eaten for holidays and special events, but they are called "Nacatamal." Nacatamals

How to Make Tamales
**This recipe is very similar to Tamale's Industry, but this recipe uses Masa Mix (Which Tamale's
Industry does not use). This is the recipe and preparation that we give out, the true recipe and
preparation is Family Secret. This is still a good way for others to make tamales**
Start with the equipment you need:
Before beginning your tamale adventure, you're going to need some important tools of the trade.
Some substitutions can of course be made, but we'll show you what we prefer.
Large steaming vessel: We use a large stainless pot with a glass lid and a large perforated steaming
basket. The larger the better. Although tamales are certainly worth the trouble, fact is they can be a
decent amount of work. You wouldn't want to do all of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That's the cooking of the meat, and the soaking of the corn husks. These steps take time and if you
don't allow for them, they'll throw off your whole day.
Let's start with cooking the meat. The best way to do this is the night before tamale day. You'll need
two large pots. Cut the pork roast into 5 or 6 large chunks. Place the chicken in one pot and the roast
in the other and cover both with water. This is also a fun place to throw in some garlic cloves, onion
slices, or anything else you think might serve the meat well. Bring to a boil. The chicken will be
done in about 2 hours, the roast will need at least 2 ½ hours.
While the meats are cooking (if you're doing this all in one day), start soaking the Corn Husks. You
need to soak them submerged in warm water for at least 2 hours to make them soft and pliable.
When the meats are done, let them cool in their liquid. If you have enough refrigerator space, you
can place them and their pots in the fridge overnight. This will not only cool the meat, but also
solidify the fat on top, making it easier to remove.
Remove both meats from their stock, but save the stock! This is a key ingredient later on.
Now take the skin from the chicken and debone it shredding the meat with your fingers. Shred the
pork in a similar fashion while discarding as much fat out of the meat as possible. Combine both of
the meats.
In a small pot on the stove, warm 1/2 C of Corn Oil 6 Tbsp Chili

Essay On Cuban Cuisine
Top 5 popular and delicious authentic cuban dishes/cuisine
When visiting Cuba, you can most definitely find out what true food quality is and authenticity.
Instead of going to State own restaurants, you can find the best homemade Cuban food in the
paladares (private owned restaurants) and most importantly at cheaper prices for the amount of food
you get served. What is so amazing about the Cuban food is the diversity, a mix of Spanish with
African and Caribbean cuisine. A typical Cuban meal will always consist of rice and beans, trust me
that is something that will never miss the dinner table, followed by some kind of protein, a salad and
plantains.

My Cultural Symbolism
My Cultural Symbol
Throughout the world there are many holidays that connect with people's culture. Since you live
your daily life in the same culture you may not notice that you have certain ways or traditions of
doing things. For me Christmas has large role in my culture. It has a specific meaning to me and my
family, it helps us connect with one another while enjoying family favorite recipes.
One element during Christmas that is significantly important is the food. Everyone brings a different
dish, some bring dessert while others bring meals for dinner. My favorite dish to eat on Christmas is
pozole. It is a soup/stew that contains hominy beans, pork, chicken or beef, and you can choose if
you want it plain or with green or red salsa to give it spice and make it more flavorful. Every time I
think of pozole I think of It is very tasty, but the downside is that we don't make it often. Some other
dishes that we eat are stuffed turkey or ham, once every few years we will have tamales, rice, and
stuffing. Tamales are another struggle because they take forever to cook and prepare. My grandma,
the tamale making expert, is the one who make the tamales. I like to help her prepare them because
it gives us time to bond and catch up with each other since we don't see each other often. Hours after
dinner we have dessert. Some of the sweets that we enjoy are pies, rosca de reyes, and banana
pudding. My favorite kind of pie is apple pie, my aunt makes it every year, I like to eat it when it is
warm and flakey with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The mouth watering aroma of apples with
cinnamon fills the house, although the downside of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Influence On Mexican Culture
Being born into a small town in Texas where a heavy influence on Mexican culture applies to almost
everyone. It makes me realized that food really plays a major part in identifying myself as a
Mexican. Because the food, makes our culture unique. In addition, learning to make my very first
ever batch of tamales made me realized that it was a memorable experience.
It was early in the morning, and I had just woken up because I hear voices and objects being moved
around in my grandma's kitchen. I got up from the bed and made my way down the hallway straight
to the kitchen. Once I entered the kitchen I saw all of my aunts with my grandma kneading the corn
flour. I just stood there by the wooden door and watched as my aunts would laugh and talk to each
other while the kneaded the corn flour. It was a beautiful sight to see because of the sunlight that
was coming in for the window was hitting their faces and making it look like they were glowing. I
started to look around the medium size room and saw the big dining table in the middle of the
kitchen leaving little space to walk around properly.
I had walked into the kitchen, and all my aunts turned around and saw me standing there. My aunt
Diana told me in Spanish "Come over and sit down and help us make tamales for Christmas dinner.
It's about time you start learning our Mexican traditions." So I went and washed my hand before
being able to sit down next to her and she told me to help knead the dough with them. My grandma

Motif Of Communication In Timeline By Michael Crichton
"Hot tamales! Hot tamales! Grid four. Come and get it! Lunch is served."(Crichton 84). This is an
example of how communication is used in the novel, Timeline. The novel, Timeline by Michael
Crichton, is about a group of graduates that go back to the Middle Ages to rescue the Professor, who
got stuck in the Middle Ages. The three graduates that go back to save their professor are André
Marek, Kate Erickson, and Chris Hughes. Throughout the novel, Crichton develops the theme of
teamwork. Crichton develops the theme through the supporting motif of communication by showing
the students using equipment and collaborating. The graduates use their radios to communicate
important information. They use code words, such as "hot tamales" and "lunch is served," to let
everyone know what is going on and to keep other people from understanding their conversations.
"Hot tamales! Hot tamales! Grid four. Come and get it! Lunch is served."(84). In a second example,
when a graduate student named Elsie is studying a piece of parchment and finds a disturbing
message, she calls to André Marek over her radio and says, "'Just come. Now'" (99&101). These
pieces of evidence support the motif of communication because Crichton is showing how the
graduates are helping each other by talking over their radios. Radios support the larger idea of

The Article ' Wild Mushrooms On The Winter '
Tamales
In the article "Wild mushrooms in the winter," tells a story about food and how the process of
cooking makes her remember some people that are not alive. She makes the point that flavors and
smells are not just that, flavors sometimes have tehe ability to transport you to memories. My own
experience with flavors, odor, and taste yields a point that is similar. What I take away from my own
experience with food is that even the smell of a certain food can transport you to the most significant
occasion. As a result, I found that certain foods have the power to transport to a special moment,
some of them even make me feel the sensation of nostalgia.
Food is most of the times cataloged as a simple object that reliefs the emptiness of our stomach. And
it is, but it´s not only that, food is the biggest pleasure humans have. Food has the power to transport
to moments in the past, the most special ones. In my case, tamales are my favorite; I could eat them
in any season of the year, but they would not taste the same. In my family, it is a tradition to prepare
them the day before "noche buena," which in Mexico is celebrated the 24 of December. I prepare
them with my mom, sisters, and sometimes some of my aunts. The process to prepare them is easy,
the hard part is to get all the ingredients in that season of the year. Just as hard as it is to get my
sisters and me together for Christmas. The most essential and original thing about tamales are the
corn leaves.

Tamales are Full of Surprises I come from a Mexican family that never forgets about their traditions
and foods. My sisters and I grew up with my parents always cooking Mexican food for the holidays,
but when my cousin married a Guatemalan lady, Virginia, she introduced us to her food. When we
first tried her tamales we didn't really know what to expect. I guess since I was used to my mom's
tamales I expected them to taste the same. Well, I was wrong. To begin with the Guatemalan were a

names they won't all be the same. Every food that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I was personally a bit shocked. They aren't accustomed to making them with the meats and salsa that
Mexicans add to our tamales. She told us that what is normal for us is weird for her. When she first
tried Mexican tamales, she thought that they were too spicy for her to actually enjoy them but the
more she ate them she started to actually like them. Most Mexican dishes are known for their
spiciness. Nothing tastes good if you don't add something spicy, well that happens with the tamales
as well. They won't be half as delicious if they weren't spicy. I really like when my mom makes
spicy tamales, Virginia's tamales only had chicken and a bit of salsa verde (green salsa), which was
barely noticeable. It felt pretty plain and I didn't really enjoy it. It became one of the foods that I
probably won't ever eat again, unless it had something more than just chicken and less masa. I am
always willing to try new food but something with flavor. Something that I can make the food
memorable. I always like to have the food leave an impression on me. This tamale was really plain.
It had no taste to it. It gave me this feeling of boredom. It looked white maybe even a yellow kind of

Mexico is one of the countries that has a strong, major, and dependable source of oil, it is considered
as the second most largest economy. Mexico has its poor outsider areas surrounding the rich cities

Mexico American Culture
Being a Mexican– American can be really tiresome. Having to uphold the expectation of being in
touch with my Mexican culture, and at the same time, my American culture can be frustrating. Both
cultures have made me who I am, the brown girl with long curly hair and indigenous facial features
of a Mexican, and the Bohemian style with a nose piercing, dyed hair and circular glasses as an
American. Growing up with two mindsets can create someone with diverse ideas as one cultured
person. Waking up on weekends to loud Mexican music, such as Marc Antonio Solis, meaning it's 7
am and it's time to wake up and start cleaning. To waking up on school days, to get on a yellow bus

cultures at the same time, deciding which holidays you should celebrate when you get older to
deciding which religion you actually want to practice. To begin with, I'm the first generation in my
household that happens to be born in America, however, my parents were both born in Mexico. I
grew up in a very Hispanic populated region when I first commenced school. Being around by
Spanish speaking kids made me feel rather pleasant. Around Winter, I've always chatted about the
favorable things that my mom would do around this time with my friends, including the traditions
we all might share as Spanish speaking children. We've talked about how our parents would make

Tamales: History, Regional Differences, and Family...
Tamales: History, Regional Differences, and Family Cultural Interpretations
Introduction:
Tradition has been said to mirror a way of life. Observation has concluded that participants in
tradition "actively construct as well as reflect culture and community" (Sacks 275). For most people
in the 21st century, tradition only reveals itself during special times or certain seasons. For others it
is simply a way of life. The foodways of Mexicans and Native Americans are of particular interest in
this study because of the food that grew from necessity and is maintained as sacred or reserved for
only special occasions. The tamale is one such food. Significantly changed and altered throughout
history it has remained a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Discussions during tamale making concerned the proper construction of the tamale itself. Masa not
too thick, filling not too scarce, and wrapping assembled just right. Conversation that enveloped the
atmosphere included everything from local gossip and men, to jobs and kids. Much of what I
learned about the meaning of life and womanhood came from these long days of constructing not
only tamales, but of family, gender, and a sense of heritage that would become a passion.
In this essay, I will discuss the history of tamales; their origin and reason for existence. I will review
the traditional tamale and its construction as well as introduce the ever–growing market of new and
improved types of tamales. I will entwine different perspectives and narratives of personal
encounters with tamales, their production, and how it has come to affect their personal lives in
relation to race, gender and family or community roles. Finally I will discuss the differences and
similarities in tamales in my native state of New Mexico, and in my new home state of Colorado,
and I will introduce tamales from and around the world in Spanish speaking countries, including a
focus on such ethnicities as Mexican and Native Americans. I hope to prove that tamales are more
than just good food; they belong to a people who work diligently for the sake of their family and
their heritage.

Mexican Food Research Paper
Food is probably the most important element of the Mexican culture. Much of the daily routine and
tradition in Mexico is preparing and eating food. Mexican food is rich in color and flavor. The
richness of their foods is important to the Hispanic culture. Traditional food was combined with the
Spanish influence such as ingredients of rice, beans, corn, meat, peppers, and onions. This was the
result of the blending of the two different heritages. Mexico also contains desserts such as flan, tres

generally eaten without utensils, garnished with salsa, guacamole, cilantro (coriander), and onions

made of masa or dough. It is steamed in a corn husk or banana leaf. The wrapping is discarded
before eating. Tamales can be filled with meats, cheeses, or any other preparation according to taste.
Both the filling and the cooking liquid may be seasoned. Huaraches and sopes are both made from a

How Do Tacos Shape My Cultural Identity
I believe that many different types of Mexican cuisine are an important parts of my culture since it
enabled me to shape my own personal cultural identity and shared some core values, along with life
lessons. First, tacos taught me how to have excellence in my work and to be careful for whenever I
do things in a rush. For example, when my family and I would create tacos with perfection and
when I made tacos in a rush that I forgot to season the meat. Second, pozole taught me to collaborate
with others and to not give up. Such as, when my family would try and create the best pozole ever,
and when I accidentally made the pozole to salty. Third, Mexican tamales taught me to be grateful
and to view the world as diverse. Since my grandma when my grandma would always buy tamales
before we eat them we would pray for the grateful things that have come our way, and to have a
responsibility to myself whenever I would make tamales.
Thru the years, another type of Mexican cuisine, that shaped my cultural identity is tacos. Tacos
shaped my cultural identity in two ways, to have excellence in my work and to not do things in a
rush. Tacos are amazing from the tortilla to the meat. Tacos are made up of chopped meat, cilantro,
onions, and chile verde. My family would always make tacos for any type of event, whether it was
for parties or just for fun. Whenever we would make tacos we will have to make it with perfection,

Eating Tamales For Christmas In Latino Culture
Latino families have a tradition to eat tamales for Christmas. Although for Americans, Christmas in
on December 25, but for us we celebrate it on Christmas Eve, December 24. This is one of the most
significant events for our Latino community. It's a time to bring families together and spend a
special day filled with lots of joy and love. Christmas is very memorialized because it represents the
birth of Jesus. However, I'm Christian Evangelist and we don't exactly believe this. This is because
never in the Bible did it say He was born on December 25, but maybe around that time. In addition,
Christmas is very significant to our culture, and that is the reason why we eat such a symbolic food
on this special day.

But, the meal is not even close to being finished. We still had to prepare the dough which would
cover everything that will go inside it. Sweet peppers, potatoes, pieces of chicken, cooked tomatoes,
and so much more ingredients are being prepared. To make the tamales you have to go through so
many steps. First, you have to get the corn husk which is what the tamale will be wrapped around
with. Next, you have to cook the dough which is going to keep everything together. The dough
cannot be too soft or too hard. If the dough is too hard it means it was over cooked, but if its too soft
it wasn't cooked enough. While everything is being made, the dough has to be laying on top of the
corn husk. Then, you have to cook the chicken. The chicken most be very hot, soft, and warm for it
to go into the tamale. Cutting the vegetables going inside the tamale is one of the most important
parts. Since the chicken is being cooked in the oven for about an hour you have to get everything
else ready. This is because when the chicken is done cooking the rest of the tamale most be done.

Tamales are a great food that taste amazing and it's actually really is to make. Tamales is a
traditional Mesoamerican dish made of masa or dough, which is steamed in a corn husk or banana

Tamales can be made out of different things like pork, beef, chicken, and etc. Tamales are great for
the holidays everyone enjoys them, We start by going to the store and buying pork, masa, chile
ancho, and corn husks etc. We cook the meat, which takes about six to eight hours. We usually cook

Tradition of the Tamales
Eating tamales when they first come out of the pot is a supernatural experience. The steam rises, and
the delightful aroma that make's my mouth water and my vocal cords say yummy. The corn husk is
holding the bundle of flavors. This bundle has been stuffed with corn meal, and it's arsenal of
chicken, savory meat, cheese and whatever was in my momma's imagination. Like the vegetarian, or
the sweet little dessert tamales with cinnamon and raisins, pineapple and coconut. The spices and
variety of chilies gives the tamales delicious flavors and coloring. All the while they are slowly

Secondly, I would be ecstatic knowing that I could play outside in the sunny day after helping with
the feast. This creates memories of playing with my neighborhood girl friends and terrorizing the
neighborhood up and down the calm streets. I remember going to the kitchen to grab two tamales at
a time, but the two pieces would have to be out of the center since that is where the warmest tamales
are collected. The tamales next to the edge of the pot were too cold for me so I always left those
pieces for my father and brothers. I would put my tamales on a small plate, pour some salsa, and
have a glass of cool aid and run into the living room to watch weekend cartoons; or the boring
soccer game if my dad had beat me into the living room. I recall eating my tamales very slowly in
mouse like bites in order to savor each piece, each flavor. However, my cool aid would be gone in a
flash since the tamales had to be wash down, because often the salsa was too hot. After I had eaten
my tamales and chugged my cool aid. I would go to my room and put my tennis shoes on. I then
dashed outside so that my mother could help me tie my hair. Next, I would go outside where I knew
any number of my neighborhood girl friends would already be playing in the streets. We would play
all day long and we would be jumping from one girl friends home to another until siesta time came.

The Meaning Of Food
Around the holidays I have three things on my mind: family, presents and delicious food. Speaking
of food I usually look forward to my mother's delicious tamales. Every year me and my brothers sit
down to make tamales. My mother's exquisite tamales have so many flavors. She starts by making a
red chili sauce and a green chili verde sauce to cook the meat in. Next me and my brothers spread
out the masa which is a type of corn dough, which we spread on corn husks. After spreading the
masa my mother puts just the right amount of sauce. Then my brothers go to work wrapping the
tamales in foil and give them to my mom to put in the pot to cook.

My mother is always there for me when I need advice and always teaches me new things. So
whenever the holidays come around I get very excited because I get to have my mama's delicious
tamales and I also get to see my mom happy and doing what she loves most. Hopefully I get to see
my Grandmother this December just because whenever my grandma comes for the holidays her and
my mother crack jokes. Its also a very special site to see my grandma cooking with my mom too. I
don't always get to see my grandmother cook but when I do I try to cherish the moment just because
she has so much skill and so much to teach. Not only that, her time is limited on this earth. She is
very old now but I know that god is watching over her. Its tough you know, knowing that you know
your mom looks up to her mom so much but she knows that she's going to pass away soon. Thats
one of the reason why my mom takes so much pride in cooking and everything she does. My
grandmother is a very special person, not just because she is my grandma but because she made my
mom who she is and my mom made me who I am today. I wish my grandmother could live with us
so my mother would be more happy and maybe have some comfort knowing that my grandma is
here safe and in a healthy condition. But unfortunately my grandmother loves Mexico to much to

A Brief Note On The Persons With Disabilities Essay
Persons with disabilities are believed and seen to be vulnerable people, poor and face exclusion
(DFID,2000). Mobility constraints or inaccessible transport can make it difficult especially for the
persons with disabilities (PWDs) to find employment, to gain education and access to various
services as well as limit their social interactions.
Persons with disabilities make up a huge portion of the poor population in less developed countries
and to achieve the goal of poverty reduction, the challenges facing PWDs in terms of mobility,
discrimination and exclusion must be addressed (Venter Et al,2000). Transportation and mobility is
an essential policy issue for the disabled and persons with Disabilities have stated how mobility and
transportation barriers affect their lives in relevant ways (Rosenbloom, 2007).
Passing the Persons with Disability act, 2006 (Act 715) has been seen as a major step in Ghana's
fight for human rights and towards addressing the mobility needs of persons with disabilities in
Ghana. As the Act spells out and covers various thematic areas including transportation and the
mobility needs of PWDs. The persons with disability act is aimed at integrating the needs of persons
with disabilities, Importation of non conventional vehicles, special parking spaces for PWDs,
Pedestrian PWDs, Provision of facilities.
For the non–disabled moving about the physical world can be taken for granted but for PWDs
several things can act as barriers to their mobility ( (Work

The History Of Mexican Cuisine
The history of Mexican cuisine tells a story about different regions having distinct ways of cooking
and choosing foods to eat. For instance, cooking teachers have attempted to associate the date of
origin of certain Mesoamerican foods to successive rulers of Xochimilco, "Xaopantzin (1379–1397)
with the vegetable dish huauhtzontles, Ozolt (1397–1411) with enchidalike chilaquiles, and
Tilhuatzin (1437–1442) with herb stuffed quiltamales" (Pilcher, 139). The Revolution in Mexico is
considered to be the first social revolution of the time. With the primary cause being the 30–year
presidency of Porfirio Díaz, other reasons included the seizure of the property of indigenous lands
by wealthy hacendados and the growing inequality between the ... Show more content on

Additionally, everyone has a deep personal connection with the simple act of eating because what
one person prefers to eat might be different for another individual. As individuals, we are each born
into a culture that most likely has a cuisine different from what others prefer or are accustomed to.
All of our palates are distinctly unique. To provide an example of the aforementioned, the Spanish
invaded Mexico in the 16th century, and they brought along with them their own kinds of foods,
with wheat holding a particular importance. The Spaniards made attempts so that Mexicans too
would have the same liking to wheat as they did, but the reality was that Mexico had a strong
attachment to corn. And while the introduction of wheat caused corn to be thought of as nutrient
deficient, Porfirian intellectual elites later found that their maize was as equally healthy. It had
always been tradition for the people of Mexico to use corn for their meals. They used it in their
diets, to make tortillas and tamales, and they also preferred the taste of corn to the taste of wheat
anyways. Therefore, the superiority that wheat was thought to have versus corn was not as great as
was previously supposed. Mexico's traditional food did not remain the same after influences of the
Spanish, and even those of India and other regions, were brought to the table. With

The Rights Of A Woman 's Esc Rights
In Africa a majority of women still lack the ability to exercise their rights. This is relevant for both
economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as civil and political rights. The issue with the
combination of the two is that when a woman's ESC rights are infringed upon, it directly, negatively
impacts their ability to exercise their civil rights. The inability to utilize civil political rights makes it
difficult for women to take place in policy change and political decision making (Ssenyonjo 42). In
order for women to have a seat at the table when it comes to long term change, it is necessary that
they have the necessary economic, social, and cultural rights. Despite treaties that attempt to grant
these rights, very little concrete progress has actually been made. Many blame this lack of change on
culture, which is defined by Manisuli Ssenyonjo as "inherited ideas, beliefs, values, and knowledge,
which constitute the shares bases of social action" (50). Culture is also seen as the interpretation of
colonial rule by a long standing patriarchal society and leadership, that has been in place for
centuries (Tamale 51). However, despite those who see culture as an obstacle to introducing human
rights to a community, it is imperative that the culture of the nation in question must be considered,
not only when implementing the new law, but when they are being written by international groups
as well. Otherwise there is no hope of the human rights actually being inserted

Children 's Development And Self Image Essay
Children's literature and picture books are often entertaining and interesting to read as a child and
even sometimes as an adult. However, there is a myriad of children's stories that significantly
influences children of their perception of other races and the opposite gender. In fact, "at ages 3–5,
children begin the processes of actively learning to distinguish the sexes and of forming gender
stereotypes [Powlishta, Serbin & Moller, 1993]. Therefore, the gender roles and the number of
female and male characters portrayed in the books probably have serious effects on these children's
gender role development and self–image" (Hamilton, Anderson, Broaddus, Young, 2006, p. 45).
While this specifically referenced gender issues, serious effects would also transpire on children's
development and self–image if gender was replaced with racial groups. A plethora of children's
literature portrays stereotypes and gender bias, and this can negatively impact not only females, but
also racial minorities and males.
Racial groups or minorities in children's literature often contain many stereotypes relating to the
group or minority. As a result, children's perceptions in regards to various ethnic groups gradually
become distorted to the stereotypical portrayal that is displayed in the story they have read. All
people in the world are human beings, regardless of race and gender; therefore, "it is important to
start when children are very young when teaching them to develop a tolerant

Reflective Essay About Food
Food brings everyone together no matter what culture you are in. Culture is a way of life shared by a
group of people, beliefs, customs, symbols and etc. Many families can spend time with each other
by preparing and eating dinner at the table, going out for dinner or just celebrating holidays. In my
family, when we eat at the dinner table, we talk about our day and build better bonds through our
interactions. My mother cooks the meal, my sisters and I set up the table with utensils and place
mats and my father is ready to eat. We all sit at the table, no technology, elbows off the table and we
give grace. While we eat, we talk about our day or anything exciting has happened and we argue and
laugh with each other.
Being in my family, we have made many traditions that have been part of my culture since I was a
kid. Going to Disneyland is one of the traditions we have. The entire family would go come to have
a good time with each other. Since we were a big family, it would be too expensive to buy food for
everyone so we make sandwiches. Everyone would contribute to bring food, my parents would
bring bread, my uncles would bring the meats and veggies and my aunts would bring chips and
sodas. Being a hispanic family, we would also bring black beans with bread. Since its too much to
carry, we would meet up at the cars in the parking structure and eat in the cars. The sandwiches
weren't just ordinary sandwiches, the bread which call " pan frances" basically french bread.

Dia de Los Santos Reyes (Day of the Holy Kings) is January 6th. It celebrates the remembrance
three wise kings. It is viewed as the last day of Christmas (the end of the 12 days of Christmas). In
addition to Christmas the children receive gifts from the three wise men. In some cultures in Mexico
the children will put hay in there shoes, in hope that the three kings will come and visit on their
camels to give something like toys or candy. The streets of major cities are full of gifts, food and
outdoor parties. It is tradition to eat rosca de reyes on this celebration. Rosca de reyes is a fruity

Impact Of Mexican Cuisine On National Identity
The Impact of Mexican Cuisine on National Identity Authentic, traditional Mexican food is thought
to be a product that was developed by the Mayan Indians. Food was first hunted and gathered so that
it was then cooked on ceramic pots or iron skillets over open fires. This ritual was fundamental for
the natives. They needed to obtain their food and prepare it in this way so that they could eat. This
exemplifies the idea that the preparation of food is not only symbolic of having a meal to eat, but
also of nature being transformed into culture. Additionally, everyone has a deep personal connection

Research Paper On Tamales

  • 1. Research Paper On Tamales Each year my family celebrates Christmas eve by making a lot of tamales and lots of food for the whole family, my cousins and uncles and aunties come over to eat and to have a good time. once the clock gets to 12:00 all the kids open their presents and after every kid has opened their present now its the adults turn to open their present. However the adults do secret Santa and after we are done with all that we get to go to sleep. On Christmas day we dont really do much besides eat the leftovers from Christmas eve and talk about the type of presents that we got for Christmas. The thing that I dont like about it is that they make too much tamales and we are stuck with eating tamales for like a week and that when we open our presents on Christmas ... • 5. Houston Research Paper In Houston, there are no limitations of the food that can be found around the city. Houston is fully diverse with countless traditions that have been passed down. The best we learn about the cultures is through food; a realization that not everybody acknowledges. These cultures has even expanded to school lunches in Cypress and Katy, to be more diverse rather than just serving hot dogs and burgers. As a Hispanic teenager, I am pleased to have been exposed by the many meals and traditions of Mexican, Salvadoran, and other heritages. For the simple reason that I am Hispanic I am expected to grow accustomed to the various spices that the rest of my family eats. However, I am so cautious around sauces and spices. This is from the experience ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From then I would get ketchup myself. Gradually over time, I grew comfortable to eating my dad's sauces to which I would say "Pa, la salsa es muy buena" Translated is that, "Dad the sauce is really good." To which I have repeatedly said at family meals. Another great sense of food is the warm soft tortillas that carry delicious pieces of juicy beef fajita. At restaurants, the sight of the steam leaving the food, creates a mouth to water as well as a pleasant feeling of home. However, not every place is going to capture the appetizing taste of food. Say for example, school. I remember one time in elementary they were serving tamales. I was so excited to see a Hispanic dish, I know I had the biggest smile on my face. I continued to my class table and sat down. All of a sudden my friend sitting across from me, a friend that happens to be Asian, questioned, "You like that?" Bluntly, I responded "Yeah, why?" In which he responded, "Oh, I didn't like it." Tamales, might I add is special occasion meal, that is prepared in a dried corn husk. Masa de Maize or the dough would be spread against the dried corn husk. Then it would be filled with chicken, pork, or cheese. Then the components would be wrapped by the corn husk to be ... • 9. The Importance Of Food Culture Most people want to find out who they really are. We can first start by looking at their food culture. Food culture is a very important element that makes us who we are. From a young child to an adult most people have developed their food culture by trial and error or simply by their preference. Food culture is different for every ethnicity from the holidays to the meals themselves. Araceli is someone important to me and hands down her food culture is very different from my own. Nicaraguan food is very different from my culture which is Mexican food getting to know about her food culture helped me get to know Araceli that much more. My food culture is based off my Mexican roots, which most people might think it is just beans and rice. Although that is partially true, most known dishes revolve around parties and holiday dinners. During these events we usually have tamales which is a popular dish and is served with sides of rice and beans of course. Food around this time is special because food gathers everyone together. Tamales take hours to prepare and usually my family gets a day to prepare for our feast. Tamales are very popular, and most people make them the same way. I recently found out that Mexicans are not the only ones who make their style of tamales. For Aracelis' culture, although the dishes are familiar the preparation itself is completely different. Tamales are still eaten for holidays and special events, but they are called "Nacatamal." Nacatamals have the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. How to Make Tamales **This recipe is very similar to Tamale's Industry, but this recipe uses Masa Mix (Which Tamale's Industry does not use). This is the recipe and preparation that we give out, the true recipe and preparation is Family Secret. This is still a good way for others to make tamales** Start with the equipment you need: Before beginning your tamale adventure, you're going to need some important tools of the trade. Some substitutions can of course be made, but we'll show you what we prefer. Large steaming vessel: We use a large stainless pot with a glass lid and a large perforated steaming basket. The larger the better. Although tamales are certainly worth the trouble, fact is they can be a decent amount of work. You wouldn't want to do all of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That's the cooking of the meat, and the soaking of the corn husks. These steps take time and if you don't allow for them, they'll throw off your whole day. Let's start with cooking the meat. The best way to do this is the night before tamale day. You'll need two large pots. Cut the pork roast into 5 or 6 large chunks. Place the chicken in one pot and the roast in the other and cover both with water. This is also a fun place to throw in some garlic cloves, onion slices, or anything else you think might serve the meat well. Bring to a boil. The chicken will be done in about 2 hours, the roast will need at least 2 ½ hours. While the meats are cooking (if you're doing this all in one day), start soaking the Corn Husks. You need to soak them submerged in warm water for at least 2 hours to make them soft and pliable. When the meats are done, let them cool in their liquid. If you have enough refrigerator space, you can place them and their pots in the fridge overnight. This will not only cool the meat, but also solidify the fat on top, making it easier to remove. Remove both meats from their stock, but save the stock! This is a key ingredient later on. Now take the skin from the chicken and debone it shredding the meat with your fingers. Shred the pork in a similar fashion while discarding as much fat out of the meat as possible. Combine both of the meats. In a small pot on the stove, warm 1/2 C of Corn Oil 6 Tbsp Chili ... Instead of going to State own restaurants, you can find the best homemade Cuban food in the paladares (private owned restaurants) and most importantly at cheaper prices for the amount of food you get served. What is so amazing about the Cuban food is the diversity, a mix of Spanish with African and Caribbean cuisine. • 21. My Cultural Symbolism My Cultural Symbol Throughout the world there are many holidays that connect with people's culture. Since you live your daily life in the same culture you may not notice that you have certain ways or traditions of doing things. For me Christmas has large role in my culture. It has a specific meaning to me and my family, it helps us connect with one another while enjoying family favorite recipes. One element during Christmas that is significantly important is the food. Everyone brings a different dish, some bring dessert while others bring meals for dinner. My favorite dish to eat on Christmas is pozole. It is a soup/stew that contains hominy beans, pork, chicken or beef, and you can choose if you want it plain or with green or red salsa to give it spice and make it more flavorful. Every time I think of pozole I think of It is very tasty, but the downside is that we don't make it often. Some other dishes that we eat are stuffed turkey or ham, once every few years we will have tamales, rice, and stuffing. Tamales are another struggle because they take forever to cook and prepare. My grandma, the tamale making expert, is the one who make the tamales. I like to help her prepare them because it gives us time to bond and catch up with each other since we don't see each other often. Hours after dinner we have dessert. Some of the sweets that we enjoy are pies, rosca de reyes, and banana pudding. My favorite kind of pie is apple pie, my aunt makes it every year, I like to eat it when it is warm and flakey with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It makes me realized that food really plays a major part in identifying myself as a Mexican. Because the food, makes our culture unique. In addition, learning to make my very first ever batch of tamales made me realized that it was a memorable experience. It was early in the morning, and I had just woken up because I hear voices and objects being moved around in my grandma's kitchen. I got up from the bed and made my way down the hallway straight to the kitchen. Once I entered the kitchen I saw all of my aunts with my grandma kneading the corn flour. I just stood there by the wooden door and watched as my aunts would laugh and talk to each other while the kneaded the corn flour. It was a beautiful sight to see because of the sunlight that was coming in for the window was hitting their faces and making it look like they were glowing. I started to look around the medium size room and saw the big dining table in the middle of the kitchen leaving little space to walk around properly. I had walked into the kitchen, and all my aunts turned around and saw me standing there. My aunt Diana told me in Spanish "Come over and sit down and help us make tamales for Christmas dinner. It's about time you start learning our Mexican traditions." So I went and washed my hand before being able to sit down next to her and she told me to help knead the dough with them. • 33. Motif Of Communication In Timeline By Michael Crichton "Hot tamales! Hot tamales! Grid four. Come and get it! Lunch is served."(Crichton 84). This is an example of how communication is used in the novel, Timeline. The novel, Timeline by Michael Crichton, is about a group of graduates that go back to the Middle Ages to rescue the Professor, who got stuck in the Middle Ages. The three graduates that go back to save their professor are André Marek, Kate Erickson, and Chris Hughes. Throughout the novel, Crichton develops the theme of teamwork. Crichton develops the theme through the supporting motif of communication by showing the students using equipment and collaborating. The graduates use their radios to communicate important information. They use code words, such as "hot tamales" and "lunch is served," to let everyone know what is going on and to keep other people from understanding their conversations. "Hot tamales! Hot tamales! Grid four. Come and get it! Lunch is served."(84). In a second example, when a graduate student named Elsie is studying a piece of parchment and finds a disturbing message, she calls to André Marek over her radio and says, "'Just come. Now'" (99&101). These pieces of evidence support the motif of communication because Crichton is showing how the graduates are helping each other by talking over their radios. The Article ' Wild Mushrooms On The Winter ' Tamales In the article "Wild mushrooms in the winter," tells a story about food and how the process of cooking makes her remember some people that are not alive. She makes the point that flavors and smells are not just that, flavors sometimes have tehe ability to transport you to memories. My own experience with flavors, odor, and taste yields a point that is similar. What I take away from my own experience with food is that even the smell of a certain food can transport you to the most significant occasion. As a result, I found that certain foods have the power to transport to a special moment, some of them even make me feel the sensation of nostalgia. Food is most of the times cataloged as a simple object that reliefs the emptiness of our stomach. And it is, but it´s not only that, food is the biggest pleasure humans have. Food has the power to transport to moments in the past, the most special ones. In my case, tamales are my favorite; I could eat them in any season of the year, but they would not taste the same. In my family, it is a tradition to prepare them the day before "noche buena," which in Mexico is celebrated the 24 of December. I prepare them with my mom, sisters, and sometimes some of my aunts. The process to prepare them is easy, the hard part is to get all the ingredients in that season of the year. Just as hard as it is to get my sisters and me together for Christmas. The most essential and original thing about tamales are the corn leaves. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My sisters and I grew up with my parents always cooking Mexican food for the holidays, but when my cousin married a Guatemalan lady, Virginia, she introduced us to her food. When we first tried her tamales we didn't really know what to expect. I guess since I was used to my mom's tamales I expected them to taste the same. Well, I was wrong. To begin with the Guatemalan were a lot smaller than the tamales I was used to. Tasting the Guatemalan tamales was a moment I would call life changing because that's when I realized that even though their food and ours have similar names they won't all be the same. Every food that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was personally a bit shocked. They aren't accustomed to making them with the meats and salsa that Mexicans add to our tamales. She told us that what is normal for us is weird for her. When she first tried Mexican tamales, she thought that they were too spicy for her to actually enjoy them but the more she ate them she started to actually like them. Most Mexican dishes are known for their spiciness. Nothing tastes good if you don't add something spicy, well that happens with the tamales as well. They won't be half as delicious if they weren't spicy. I really like when my mom makes spicy tamales, Virginia's tamales only had chicken and a bit of salsa verde (green salsa), which was barely noticeable. It felt pretty plain and I didn't really enjoy it. It became one of the foods that I probably won't ever eat again, unless it had something more than just chicken and less masa. I am always willing to try new food but something with flavor. Something that I can make the food memorable. I always like to have the food leave an impression on me. This tamale was really plain. It had no taste to it. It gave me this feeling of boredom. It looked white maybe even a yellow kind of color, shaped in a small square. I just stood there by the wooden door and watched as my aunts would laugh and talk to each other while the kneaded the corn flour. It was a beautiful sight to see because of the sunlight that was coming in from the window was hitting their faces and making it look like they were glowing. It's about time you start learning our Mexican traditions." So I went and washed my hand before being able to sit down next to her and she told me to help knead the dough with ... Tamales: History, Regional Differences, and Family Cultural Interpretations Introduction: Tradition has been said to mirror a way of life. Observation has concluded that participants in tradition "actively construct as well as reflect culture and community" (Sacks 275). For most people in the 21st century, tradition only reveals itself during special times or certain seasons. For others it is simply a way of life. The foodways of Mexicans and Native Americans are of particular interest in this study because of the food that grew from necessity and is maintained as sacred or reserved for only special occasions. Discussions during tamale making concerned the proper construction of the tamale itself. Masa not too thick, filling not too scarce, and wrapping assembled just right. Conversation that enveloped the atmosphere included everything from local gossip and men, to jobs and kids. Much of what I learned about the meaning of life and womanhood came from these long days of constructing not only tamales, but of family, gender, and a sense of heritage that would become a passion. In this essay, I will discuss the history of tamales; their origin and reason for existence. I will review the traditional tamale and its construction as well as introduce the ever–growing market of new and improved types of tamales. I will entwine different perspectives and narratives of personal encounters with tamales, their production, and how it has come to affect their personal lives in relation to race, gender and family or community roles. Finally I will discuss the differences and similarities in tamales in my native state of New Mexico, and in my new home state of Colorado, and I will introduce tamales from and around the world in Spanish speaking countries, including a focus on such ethnicities as Mexican and Native Americans. I hope to prove that tamales are more than just good food; they belong to a people who work diligently for the sake of their family and their heritage. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Do Tacos Shape My Cultural Identity I believe that many different types of Mexican cuisine are an important parts of my culture since it enabled me to shape my own personal cultural identity and shared some core values, along with life lessons. First, tacos taught me how to have excellence in my work and to be careful for whenever I do things in a rush. For example, when my family and I would create tacos with perfection and when I made tacos in a rush that I forgot to season the meat. Second, pozole taught me to collaborate with others and to not give up. Such as, when my family would try and create the best pozole ever, and when I accidentally made the pozole to salty. Third, Mexican tamales taught me to be grateful and to view the world as diverse. Since my grandma when my grandma would always buy tamales before we eat them we would pray for the grateful things that have come our way, and to have a responsibility to myself whenever I would make tamales. Thru the years, another type of Mexican cuisine, that shaped my cultural identity is tacos. Mobility constraints or inaccessible transport can make it difficult especially for the persons with disabilities (PWDs) to find employment, to gain education and access to various services as well as limit their social interactions. Persons with disabilities make up a huge portion of the poor population in less developed countries and to achieve the goal of poverty reduction, the challenges facing PWDs in terms of mobility, discrimination and exclusion must be addressed (Venter Et al,2000). Transportation and mobility is an essential policy issue for the disabled and persons with Disabilities have stated how mobility and transportation barriers affect their lives in relevant ways (Rosenbloom, 2007). Passing the Persons with Disability act, 2006 (Act 715) has been seen as a major step in Ghana's fight for human rights and towards addressing the mobility needs of persons with disabilities in Ghana. For instance, cooking teachers have attempted to associate the date of origin of certain Mesoamerican foods to successive rulers of Xochimilco, "Xaopantzin (1379–1397) with the vegetable dish huauhtzontles, Ozolt (1397–1411) with enchidalike chilaquiles, and Tilhuatzin (1437–1442) with herb stuffed quiltamales" (Pilcher, 139). Additionally, everyone has a deep personal connection with the simple act of eating because what one person prefers to eat might be different for another individual. As individuals, we are each born into a culture that most likely has a cuisine different from what others prefer or are accustomed to. All of our palates are distinctly unique. To provide an example of the aforementioned, the Spanish invaded Mexico in the 16th century, and they brought along with them their own kinds of foods, with wheat holding a particular importance. The Spaniards made attempts so that Mexicans too would have the same liking to wheat as they did, but the reality was that Mexico had a strong attachment to corn. And while the introduction of wheat caused corn to be thought of as nutrient deficient, Porfirian intellectual elites later found that their maize was as equally healthy. It had always been tradition for the people of Mexico to use corn for their meals. They used it in their diets, to make tortillas and tamales, and they also preferred the taste of corn to the taste of wheat anyways. Therefore, the superiority that wheat was thought to have versus corn was not as great as was previously supposed. Mexico's traditional food did not remain the same after influences of the Spanish, and even those of India and other regions, were brought to the table. With ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 113. The Rights Of A Woman 's Esc Rights In Africa a majority of women still lack the ability to exercise their rights. This is relevant for both economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as civil and political rights. The issue with the combination of the two is that when a woman's ESC rights are infringed upon, it directly, negatively impacts their ability to exercise their civil rights. The inability to utilize civil political rights makes it difficult for women to take place in policy change and political decision making (Ssenyonjo 42). In order for women to have a seat at the table when it comes to long term change, it is necessary that they have the necessary economic, social, and cultural rights. Despite treaties that attempt to grant these rights, very little concrete progress has actually been made. Many blame this lack of change on culture, which is defined by Manisuli Ssenyonjo as "inherited ideas, beliefs, values, and knowledge, which constitute the shares bases of social action" (50). Culture is also seen as the interpretation of colonial rule by a long standing patriarchal society and leadership, that has been in place for centuries (Tamale 51). However, despite those who see culture as an obstacle to introducing human rights to a community, it is imperative that the culture of the nation in question must be considered, not only when implementing the new law, but when they are being written by international groups as well. Otherwise there is no hope of the human rights actually being inserted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 117. Children 's Development And Self Image Essay Children's literature and picture books are often entertaining and interesting to read as a child and even sometimes as an adult. However, there is a myriad of children's stories that significantly influences children of their perception of other races and the opposite gender. In fact, "at ages 3–5, children begin the processes of actively learning to distinguish the sexes and of forming gender stereotypes [Powlishta, Serbin & Moller, 1993]. Therefore, the gender roles and the number of female and male characters portrayed in the books probably have serious effects on these children's gender role development and self–image" (Hamilton, Anderson, Broaddus, Young, 2006, p. 45). While this specifically referenced gender issues, serious effects would also transpire on children's development and self–image if gender was replaced with racial groups. A plethora of children's literature portrays stereotypes and gender bias, and this can negatively impact not only females, but also racial minorities and males. Racial groups or minorities in children's literature often contain many stereotypes relating to the group or minority. As a result, children's perceptions in regards to various ethnic groups gradually become distorted to the stereotypical portrayal that is displayed in the story they have read. Culture is a way of life shared by a group of people, beliefs, customs, symbols and etc. Many families can spend time with each other by preparing and eating dinner at the table, going out for dinner or just celebrating holidays. My mother cooks the meal, my sisters and I set up the table with utensils and place mats and my father is ready to eat. We all sit at the table, no technology, elbows off the table and we give grace. While we eat, we talk about our day or anything exciting has happened and we argue and laugh with each other. Being in my family, we have made many traditions that have been part of my culture since I was a kid. Going to Disneyland is one of the traditions we have. The entire family would go come to have a good time with each other. Since we were a big family, it would be too expensive to buy food for everyone so we make sandwiches. Everyone would contribute to bring food, my parents would bring bread, my uncles would bring the meats and veggies and my aunts would bring chips and sodas. Being a hispanic family, we would also bring black beans with bread. Since its too much to carry, we would meet up at the cars in the parking structure and eat in the cars. The sandwiches weren't just ordinary sandwiches, the bread which call " pan frances" basically french bread. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 149. Impact Of Mexican Cuisine On National Identity The Impact of Mexican Cuisine on National Identity Authentic, traditional Mexican food is thought to be a product that was developed by the Mayan Indians. Food was first hunted and gathered so that it was then cooked on ceramic pots or iron skillets over open fires. This ritual was fundamental for the natives. They needed to obtain their food and prepare it in this way so that they could eat. This exemplifies the idea that the preparation of food is not only symbolic of having a meal to eat, but also of nature being transformed into culture. Additionally, everyone has a deep personal connection with the simple act of eating because what one person prefers to eat might be different for another individual. As individuals, we are each born into a culture that most likely has a cuisine different from what others prefer or are accustomed to. All of our palates are distinctly unique.
