Personal Narrative-My Journey To Granada Theater
It was about two hours until the doors opened and I was sitting in staring at my television, appearing
to be in a trance. On the screen a mob of what looked like 30 or so zombies were chasing me
through a maze of pilars and various piles of rubbish as I swiftly navigated the ceiling of an upside
down temple in Tokyo. I was supposed to be headed to the ATM to withdraw gas money and a bit of
spending money–in case I wanted to get a t–shirt or something but my Playstation's grip on me was
as strong as ever. Fortunately, it wasnt long before my undead counterparts overwhelmed me and
ended the game. I hopped up, grabbed my vynle copy of Return of 4eva and everything I would
need for my journey, and darted out the door. I was embarking on my journey to the Granada
Theatre where, after a lot of waiting, I would not only watch Big K.R.I.T. perform, but also I would
also be able to meet him afterwards. Once inside my car, I plugged in the aux cord and sang along as

My V.I.P. tickets granted me an unobstructed view of my favorite rapper as he darted back and forth
across the stage. I spent the entire time with my cell phone in hand, recording the event and reciting
virtually every word with him. Occationally he would stop to explain or recount an event that
related to one of the songs. When the performance came to a close, those that had purchased VIP
tickets were instructed to stay for the meet and gree portion of the concert. Realizing that I had left
my vinyl in the car, I rushed to security guard and asked if I could run to my car and get it. He said
hurry, and i did just that! WHen I got back, I spent about twenty or so minutes regaining my breath
until I noticed taht some of the concert staff pointing to the right end of the stage. Having seen this,

The Fall Of The Moors

The Fall of the Moors In 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered the new world. That year also
marked the fall of the Moors (Medieval Muslims). They ruled over the Moor Kingdom of Granada
in the Iberian Peninsula from 711 to 1492, where the three Abrahamic religions lived in peace. In
that year, the battle of Granada caused their great empire to fall. After this battle, Muslims were
forced to convert to Christianity or be expelled from the land. This oppression went to the extent of
forbidding any Islamic acts, behaviors, and scriptures, with violators being prosecuted, which
resulted in unfair and unjust treatment for the Moors in Spain. The Moors arrived at the Iberian
Peninsula in 711 by crossing the Mediterranean Sea near North Africa (Florian 20). Within seven
years, the Iberian Peninsula (which they called Al–Andalus) was almost completely occupied by
these people (De Luca et. al. 5). Moors had control of the majority of Iberian Peninsula, but, in late
718, King Visigoths Pelayo of Alcama, fought against the Moors and defeated them at the battle of
Covadonga. Later on, they were defeated at another battle: the battle of Granada. The unity of Spain
played heavily in this battle. It was between Aragon 's King Ferdinand and Isabella I, the Queen of
Castile. They were married in 1469, soon after which the united forces of both states rose against the
Moors (Florian 183). Their combined forces participated in the Reconquista, which led to the fall of

What Is The Similarities Between The Lord Of The Flies And...
Literature often has a meaning that is not expressed outright to the readers. While the Lord of the
Flies by William Golding and the Blood Wedding by Federico Garcia Lorca may be understood as a
rollicking tale about shipwrecked school boys and a tragic play about an entangled love story
between four youngsters, the two works in fact implicitly criticize the societies in which the stories
are set that are directly related to the social contexts of their production. While both the Lord of the
Flies and the Blood Wedding do so through metaphoric characters and symbolism in the stories, the
former is relatively more allegorical and its criticism tends to refer to all human societies rather than
a specific one and the latter makes more use of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To begin with, Lorca satirizes the importance people place on tradition in their lives. The Bride's
father, who deters the marriage of his daughter to Leonardo in reason of Leonardo's lack of land and
money, symbolizes the preoccupation of people with land and property. This preoccupation is
certainly echoed by the Bridegroom's mother as she places the amount of land and power as the first
priority in her discussion with the Bride's father about their children's marriage. That is, Lorca casts
doubt on the fact that the prime motivation of the marriages is material abundance of the children's
families instead of the spiritual love between them. Besides, such worldly tradition, which seems to
be supported by the society, represses the passion and natural instinct represented by the Bride and
Leonardo. Unfortunately, like many lovers in the Spanish society at the time, the two are forced to
betray their love and instincts in order to conform to the social conventions. The fact that the
arranged marriage leads to tragic consequences at the end conveys Lorca's disproval of such
traditions and preoccupation with materialism. Furthermore, Lorca also throws his criticism on the
people's obsession with public opinion and the women's role in the society. The Bridegroom's
mother, as well as Leonardo's wife, are forced to completely withdraw from the society and live the
empty lives of widows who have to keep "the door always shut" and "nail up the windows" because
of the social feudalism. Lorca, therefore criticizes such a subservient role of women in the society.
Even though most women detest such inferiority and lack of freedom, they continue to follow such
traditions due to the much attention they pay to public opinion, even in their greatest moments of
anguish. Namely, when the Bridegroom's mother is informed about her son's death, she does not

Machiavelli's The Prince Essay
Most people throughout history and today are probably in agreement that those who are in power,
with rule over peoples should keep their word; however, as Machiavelli notes, those "princes" that
have accomplished the most have done so through deception. A prince can fight with laws, in a
civilized manner, or with force if needed. Machiavelli believes a prince should "imitate the fox in
cunning as well as the lion in strength." So a prince must seem virtuous, while simultaneously
deceiving those individuals who are willing to be deceived in order to fulfill his own interests.
Machiavelli justifies this way of carrying oneself in that other princes cannot be expected to keep
their word to you, so you must act in ways that are prosperous to your ... Show more content on

In an interview with King Ferdinand in 1483 after his capture, Boabdil offers his subservience to the
Spanish Crown as ruler of Granada in exchange for his freedom. Ferdinand grants this to him. On
Boabdil's return to Granada, however, he is no longer recognized by Islamic clerics as the sole,
legitimate ruler. He returns again to Castile to meet with Ferdinand in 1486, this time he offers to aid
Ferdinand and Isabella in conquering Granada as long as they leave him a small portion, again
Ferdinand agrees. Boabdil succeeded in hindering El Zagal's troops, leading to a Spanish victory
later. Boabdil keeps his word and surrenders the rest of Granada in exchange for a vast private
domain and a Castilian allowance. Only one year later, King Ferdinand treats Boabdil just as he did
every other Muslim, forcing him to cede his domain in Granada and leave the country. This was
perfect execution of Machiavellian values, offering a deal because the reward far outweighed the
risk in that the reward was conquering Granada once and for all. Then once Ferdinand got what he
wanted, he proceeded to carry out policies that would prosper his own nation, and if those policies
broke an agreement with a former quasi–ally then so

Personal Narrative: My Trip To The Granada Theater
When I first walked into the Granada Theatre I was amazed by the intricate detail put into the design
of the venue. At first glance, it seemed to be an extremely high class venue, and it made sense why
Professor Roy asked us to dress nicely. In all honesty I felt totally out of my element. I showed up a
couple minutes late so they had me stand until the first piece was over to take my seat. The
seriousness added to the layer of prestige that I had begun to attribute to the event. When I finally
took my seat, I was astounded by the setup too. The piano was center stage. I was expecting an
orchestra before I had arrived, but was not too disappointed to see just Yuja Wang. I could see her,
but I could also see people sitting in the balcony. The

The Battle Of Covadong The Final Push
Battle of Covadonga was the final push of numerous attempts of uprisings and rebellions that began
in 718. During this time, King Pelayo resisted attempts by the Moors to gain control of Asturias.
However, in 720, after sending out a force to Asturias, Pelayo and his forces of about 500 men were
forced to retreat. The Moorish leader offered terms to surrender, but Pelayo refused. Al Kama,
Moorish leader, ordered an attack. However, the Asturians and Pelayo inflicted major causalities and
pushed back the Moors. The Moors soon began to retreat, but were attacked by larger Asturians
forces who had gained support by villagers. This success ensured that part of Iberia remained in
control of the Christians. For Pelayo, this ensured his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By 1492, 100,000 had died or been enslaved, 200,000 had emigrated, and 200,000 remained in
Castille (Kamen, N.D).
A primary goal of the Reconquista was to repopulate the Iberian Peninsula with Christians. As areas
that used to be occupied by Muslims became vacant, kings brought in their own people to secure the
borders. In Spain, the main areas of repopulation were places like the central Catalonia. During the
Reconquista, the Christians, mainly from the northern kingdoms, used their power to create legal
and political institutions. Many of these institutions still survive in Spain today ("Reconquista,"
2016).
The religious war and conquest for land made a significant impact on Spain, many of which you can
see today. A significant impact the Reconquista had can be seen in Spain's population and
demographics. Today, Catholic Christianity is the largest religion in Spain. Although it is no longer
the official state religion after the Spanish Constitution of 1978 abolished it, it is still prominent in
Spain. According to the World Atlas, 76.7% of the population consider themselves Catholic, 20%
are atheist and 3–5% are other religions like Islam. These numbers today are in result of the
Reconquista that dramatically decreased the population of many areas and cities that was mainly
populated by the Muslims before the war. Three main cities being; Granada, Cordoba, and Seville.
These permanent effects impacted population growth as well. During the

the sister of the former King Malkar Andari, who had passed away almost ten winters ago, in battle.
Malkar's heir, Aladar, was only 8 at the time. So Siana was elected Queen Regent until the boy was
of age to rule. Now ten years later Aladar is finally 18 and can rule the kingdom as king. Everything
was almost ready. It was to be a big celebration. They even managed to get one the Great Seven

He deliberately forgot his older family only giving attention to his new wife, Binetou. This created
hatred and antipathy in
Ramatoulaye's heart for Modou as I quote:
"And to think that I loved this man passionately, to think that I gave him thirty years of my life, to
think that twelve times over I carried his child. The addition of a rival to my life was not enough for
him.
In loving someone else, he burned his past, both morally and materially. He dared to commit such an
act of disavowal"
From this extract, it is evident that Ramatoulaye was not at all happy with her husband. This is
because he was the cause of her grief; he abandoned her after all those years of marriage. She was
also exasperated due to the fact that not only did he want to get married to a woman, but he also
wanted to be a "sugar–daddy". Therefore, she feels that the marriage was unnecessary. This is
confirmed by the quote: "Was it madness, weakness, irresistible love? What inner confusion led
Modou Fall to marry Binetou?"
As we can see that Modou caused a lot of pain for poor Ramatoulaye; therefore, succumbing to
death, I agree to the statement 'characters that cause immense pain to another, especially to their
consorts, succumb to death.'
Likewise, in Blood Wedding, we see the character of the protagonist,
Leonardo. His death is announced by the Beggar Woman and does not come as a shock due to the
actions he had performed. The fact that he had angered his wife

Essay On Alhambra
Introduction
Alhambra (Cast Alhambra), the palace and fortress of the Moorish monarchs of Granada is located
on Sabika hill that overlooks the city of Granada in Spain. In Arabic Al–Hamra' means "the red one"
so the name Alhambra is probably derived from the colour of the sun–dried tapia, or bricks made of
fine gravel and clay, of which the outer walls of the palace are built. Alhambra's Islamic palaces, as
we know them today, were built for the last Muslim emirs in Spain and the court of the Nasrid
dynasty. Moorish poets described it as "a pearl set in emeralds," an allusion to the colour of its
buildings and the woods around them. Figure 1 the Alhambra Palace

In the Alhambra, a star shape made of rotating squares is also immensely used and the final
impression of a never–ending maze leading the eye to numerous geometrical perspectives can be
seen on most of the palace walls.
Arabesque
As mentioned earlier the interlacing decoration and stylised vegetal forms of decorations, these two
combined can be called Arabesque, which by definition means ""surface decorations based on
rhythmic linear patterns of scrolling and interlacing foliage, tendrils" or plain lines, often combined
with other elements." The plant ornamentation in the Alhambra is encouraged by the constant
references to heaven as the garden of happiness. Examples of plants forming large adorning
elements on walls can be seen all around the walls of the Sala de la Barca (Boat Room) – in the
form of engraved tree trunks with numerous leaves and fruits. Figure 7 Ceiling of the Sala de la

Christopher Columbus And The Columbus
Christopher Columbus
"In fourteen hundred ninety–two / Columbus sailed the ocean blue." In grade school, I was taught
this rhyme to learn about Christopher Columbus. Most of what I learned about Christopher
Columbus then, was that he thought the world was round (and others didn't); and that he wanted to
sail to India, but messed up, and landed in America, calling the natives "Indians." As I grew older, I
learned a little bit more about Columbus's trips to the Americas. I was told that Christopher
Columbus wasn't as nice of a person as I was taught when I was younger. I learned that Columbus'
heart was set on acquiring as much gold from the natives as possible. He turned them into slaves and
brought diseases with him–from which whole tribes died off. While I was surprised to hear about
these unfortunate actions, I was more surprised that I had never heard about them. At first, I was
hesitant to believe these stories, but as we learned more about his travels, the stories seemed to be
more realistic, and true. However, when I was able to read the extracts from Christopher Columbus'
journal, I was able to better piece together the type of man Christopher Columbus was. Christopher
Columbus was a leader, explorer, adventurer, thinker, and doer. Although he was rejected multiple
times whilst trying to get the funds necessary to travel to India, he did not give up and continued to
seek the approval of the Portuguese and Spanish monarchies. Eventually, when Queen Isabella was

Hassan al–Wazzan, known as "Leo the African" in the West, is an unusual character. Born in
Granada in December 1488, the man is indeed spectator of many great events that shaped his world.
His era is one of the great upheavals: the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance. Islam moves east:
the fall of Granada and the end of the last Muslim kingdom in Andalusia marks the victory of the

The Castilians: The Conquest Of Granada
Granada's surrender not only epitomizes the perspective of the Castilian but also that of other
interested sides. In this line of view, only Isabella comes out as a representative of Castilian
perspective. While Ferdinand and the other participants take part in it, they do not represent the
Castilians point of view. In the story, the entire idea is to evict Muslims from Granada and the
Catholic papal participates in this contest too to help convert some Muslims to Christianity and send
those who are defiant away from
Spain. The Papal gives his support through monetary means to help fund the process of the
conquest. Nonetheless, the conquest of Granada is spearheaded by the Castilians though they cannot

In due course, financial assistance came from Seville, a depiction that the project was joint and did
not represent the interests of the Castilians alone. The conquest of Granada was a collaborative idea
and was supported by all groups that had an interest in it.
It is true that Castile faced problems before this war since they suffered the declaration of the holy
war all through the 15th century. They were happy that the start of a conquest by the Christian side
would help them have a better life without the influence of the Muslims. In fact, they wished for the
Muslims to be converted to
Christianity so that the monarch could recognize this as the local religion. Due to this,
Castile appeared to enjoy the bulk of benefits when the Christians finally ousted the
Muslims. Having one religion in Granada would be better for the rulers since people would be
reflected the conventional holy Christian wars with ease. Some people felt that this would help to
expand the realms of the empire though this was never the case.
Ideally, the motive was to confine all people of the same religion that not only the

University Of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus
Since my high school years, I have appreciated the importance of expanding my knowledge. That
was when I decided to enroll in the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus. I come from a
family that has been through many life challenges, such as the passing away of my father, economic
issues, and other dilemmas. The death of my father opened my eyes about life. It taught me that life
goes by fast, and I cannot waste it. It showed me that I have to make my time here valued, specially,
for myself. This is the reason why education remains important to me, and it is the foundation of the
person I am today. Currently, Puerto Rico is facing a financial debt crisis that puts the future of
many students at stake, including myself. Despite that, I have received the best education possible
and have made my way thanks to the sacrifices of my mother to ensure the wellbeing of my siblings
and me. My parents always told me that if I want something, I have to work hard in order to achieve
it. My biggest fear is striving for my goals, and, despite that, not being able to reach them. I will not
always win, but I will keep trying. I see that this is what life is about, and I realize that sometimes
these things happen.

An Essay About The Alhambra
Alhambra, a palace built in Granada, Spain, grew significantly in the 14th century. It was
constructed by the Berbers of the Emirate of Granada in al–Andalus. It is built on a high–leveled
land that overlooks the Granada city. The area where the Alhambra is built is a mountainous region,
where the Nevada Mountains are ascending over the Alhambra palace. The area is known for its
extreme temperature where it can be very cold or extra hot.
The name "Alhambra", whose literal translation is "red fortress", is derived from the color of the
bricks composing the outer walls, which is of made of clay and gravel. Portions were rebuilt in the
Renaissance fashion, and a piece was destroyed to build an "Italianate palace designed by Pedro de
Machuca in 1526".
The Alhambra reflects the culture of the final centuries during the Moorish rule of Al Andalus. It
incorporates extensive gardens– the Generalife. The combination of open spaces, water, constructed
structures, and gardens, signify this palace.
The palaces were built perpendicular to each other and they are centered around a courtyard with
cortices on either side. The Alcazaba (citadel), which is the oldest part, is included in the Moorish
portion of the Alhambra. What remained from the citadel until this day are its enormous outer walls,
ramparts, and towers. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on Romance de la Luna, Luna
Federico Garcia Lorca's "Romance de La Luna, Luna" is a Spanish poem that tells the story of a
young gypsy boy and the moon. His love and infatuation with the moon leads to his death. This
poem not only tells the story of this young child's demise, but also shows the effects when someone
is lured in by an appealing temptation. The poem uses many literary devices to enhance the meaning
the words provide. The poem starts at the beginning of the story as the moon comes to visit the
forge. The moon is said to be wearing "her skirt of white, fragrant flowers" (Lorca 2) as its bright
light penetrates the scene. The poem states "the young boy watches her, watches. / The young boy is
watching her" (3–4). The repetition of the phrase emphasizes ... Show more content on

The moon has now become ominous as it forewarns of the child's death. Spanish culture is once
again brought into the poem as the moon becomes deathly. The moon has always been a figure of
death in Spanish history and continues to be represented in that matter by this poem. The moon's
sensual appeal balances its foreboding nature. The boy is enticed by the mystery of the moon and
does not heed her warning. Once again the boy warns the moon, "flee, moon, moon, moon" (17), as
he shows his continued persistence to save the moon he has been draw into. He warns that the
gypsies are coming, but the moon will not leave its dance. The moon says, "young boy, leave me,
don't step on / my starched whiteness" (19–20). This shows her lack of concern for the boy, which
exemplifies her task to only attract him to her. Her starched whiteness once again contradicts her
true mission to lead him to his demise. "Beating the drum of the plain" (22) stresses the intensity of
the moment leading up to the point that "within the forge the young man has closed eyes" (23).
The climax of the story has just occurred, as the child death has taken place. The Spanish belief that
the moon is a bad omen has remained true with the little boy's eyes closed, signifying his death. The
gypsies return and the diction used to describe them emphasizes their mystery and flow. "How the
night bird sings" (29) implies the bird is singing a song to mourn the death of the child. It then says

The World And Empires By Anthony Pagden
Peoples and Empires Throughout history there have been a multitude of different empires to rise up
and conquer land, along with the people inhabiting that land. More often than not, these empires fell.
Whether the empire was quickly abolished, or it maintained power for decades, most of them were
over thrown. Anthony Pagden, who at the time of publication was a history professor at John
Hopkins, wrote the book Peoples and Empires in 2003 to explain the history of the once "Great
European Empires". These empires included, but are not limited to, the French, the Spanish, the
British, and the Roman Empire. One major idea of the content focuses on how these particular
empires justified their conquering, not only to themselves, but also to their followers and the people
who rebelled against them. Conquerors would travel to the ends of the earth in order to obtain more
land which in turn is more power. However, in order to do this they had to justify their actions to the
individuals occupying that land. In doing so, they fabricated what they assumed were acceptable
reasons as to why an empire was more luxurious, or in other words "better", than the systems they
had in place before. The most common ideology between all of the empires was the simple idea of
being "civilized" versus being "barbaric" or "savage". Pagden thoroughly explains how the empires
used this ideology and coupled it with small force to justify their actions and the overall concept of
an empire: "They

Restaurant Rhetorical Analysis Essay: Lorca
North of Manhattan, a good cup of coffee is hard to come by; the taste is lacking in strength and not
much thought is put into its production. Profit–seeking coffee chains like Dunkin Donuts and Donut

Also unique to Lorca are the homemade churros, a traditional Mexican dessert served for those
craving a taste not easily found in the States. Layla Dam, owner of Lorca, makes piping hot Churros
to order. The fried choux pastry contains butter, water, flour, and eggs with a high moisture content,
rather than a raising agent, to puff the pastry. Fresh out of the frier, they are coated with
confectioner's sugar and served with three distinct sauces, including a Mexican inspired chocolate
sauce with the perfect balance of sugar and spice. Aside from foreignly imported specialties,
locally–baked goods can be enjoyed. Delectable pastries are brought in daily from Wave Hill
pastries and breads, a cafe based in Norwalk, CT. Such goods are baked daily, so freshness is

The Inquisition : The Reign Of Fear
Time and time again, throughout history, Jews faced immeasurable intolerance. The infamous
Spanish Inquisition propelled those of the Jewish faith and heritage into the New World. Historians
specializing in the Spanish Inquisition itself often begin their research mid–story, ignoring
completely its roots, which date back to the thirteenth century. Instead, it is common for a book on
the Inquisition to begin in the fifteenth century, with the expulsion of North African Muslims, or
Moors, from Spain. Even in Toby Green's Inquisition: The Reign of Fear, a fourteen chapter book
devoted to the subject, the author evasively states, "The Inquisition had been created in Spain within
the past few years to target alleged bad Christians among the conversos." As noted by one historian,
Gale Stewart, conversely, "the Inquisition had been an active force in Europe for over 250 years
before it came to Spain."
The Church, under the authority of Pope Innocent III (1161–1216), began enacting policies to purge
society of all heretics, as they were seen as a threat to papal authority, and therefore, a threat to the
governing forces who looked to the Pope for political advisement. The Cathari, one of the earliest
Christian sects, believed that selfless devotion and acts of charity were the intentions of Jesus. The
Catharis openly criticized corruption in Rome, especially the practice of simony and indulgences.

The Spanish Inquisition: A Historical Revision by Henry Kamen
The Spanish Inquisition: A Historical Revision by Henry Kamen, was released in 1997 and is the
third edition of the acclaimed book centered around the infamous tribunal. The years following the
first publication saw increases in the quality of scholarship and an influx of research. New historical
interpretations subsequently began to demonstrate an enhanced insight, as works like Benzion

consequentially compelled to reevaluate the evidence surrounding the Inquisition, ultimately
causing him to divert from his previous conclusions and adopt a revisionist perspective exploring
historical causation. The Spanish Inquisition has been repeatedly studied for ... Show more content

Kamen notes the ambiguous pressure on Jews, as despite the anti–semitism of contemporary
Europe, the 'Aragonese crown protected the Jews and conversos firmly, rejecting all attacks on them'
and how any existing anti–Semetic legislation went unenforced (Kamen 15). Even after Ferdinand
and Isabella initiated their reign in 1474, the monarchs were 'never personally anti–Semitic' and
their intervention in domestic politics demonstrated an 'impressive picture of the monarchy
protecting its jews' (Kamen, 16). In actuality, the inception of the Inquisition and the subsequent
expulsion of the Jewish population was prompted by the actions of 'Judaizers', who were made up of
conversos who had attempted to persuade newly assimilated Christians to return to their original
Jewish faith. The efforts of these Judaizers concerned the crown and as a result the Inquisition was
officially founded on September 27, 1480 as a means of regulating the the disruptive and
disobedient conversos.
Although the Jews were not immediately affected by the tribunal, as only Christians were
prosecuted, they experienced increased tension with the conversos that prompted their imminent
expulsion. Many jews offered their cooperation upon its inception yet vindictive members who
provided false witnesses were often exposed; the government eventually concluded that 'the only

The Dome Of The Rock And Alhambra Essay
The two Islamic structures are the Dome of the rock and alhambra. It is likely that both structures

Isabella And Ferdinand Foreign Policy Essay
What factors determined the nature of Isabella and Ferdinand's foreign policy?
There were many factors that each individually helped push Isabella and Ferdinand's foreign policy
in the direction they needed and wanted to go, although altogether they determined what was to
come of Spain herself and the population living there. The kingdoms had to unite in order to help
safeguard their country and help build their power across the world. There are four top factors that
determined the nature of the policy tremendously, these were; fear of the advance of Islam,
safeguarding the Iberian Peninsula, trade and France, each will be discussed what they did for the

They did this by conquering Granada, in part to secure Spain's position in the eastern part of the

Ferdinand were creating agreements with other countries in order to secure their boarders; they
came up with government strategies with other nations to benefit their country as a whole. In this
case, the agreements were gaining them protection, more power and land and even some strong
alliances, all due to their foreign policy. However, they didn't create treaties only; they also
safeguarded the Iberian Peninsula through marriage. Isabella and Ferdinand had many children who
married in to great families. For example, their daughter Joanna married the Holy Roman Emperor's
son, Philip; this secured another alliance, more wealth and power, but also protected their eastern
boarders. Also, their daughter Isabella married Alfonso, Prince of Portugal. This secured their
western boarders and also created a very strong alliance. To secure the frontiers with France, the
Treaty of Barcelona was created and they gave both Cerdagne and Roussillon back to Spain. These
arrangements all came under the strong foreign policy and they safeguarded the Iberian Peninsula

Military Tactics: The Spanish Conquest
Previous smaller conquests provided the experience for Europeans to practice the most effective
methods which prepared them to be victorious on higher risk conquests. Leading up to 1492 the
Spanish and Portuguese in particular had quite a bit of practice with the war of Granada and the
conquest of the Canary Islands. With Al–Andalus pushing on the edges of spanish territory, it forced
the continuous evolution and advancement of military tactics (Kamen, 21). With the war of
Granada, the conquest was on a much smaller scale, which allowed the Spanish to try new tactics
with much less of a risk if they failed. Trial and error weeded out the most successful strategies, in
order to best utilize the resources and men. One of these tactics being that

In the book Leo Africanus it is a fictionalized biography of a real person, Hasan al– Wazzan. Hasan
and his family were forced to flee to Fez, where he grew up and became a very well–off merchant.
The book really gives a clear picture of his family life as a child, his education, his marriages, his
travels, and his bitter– sweet reminiscence of exile. The narrator of Amin Maalouf's historical novel,
Hasan al–Wazzan – who came to be named Leo Africanus – was born in 1488, in the weakening

He finds a lifelong friend at school, Harun, and together they roam the streets of the city, looking for
adventure. Hasan accompanies his uncle on his first tactful mission, and as their caravan roam the

''His tone was so reassuring,'' Hasan later recalls, ''that it made me breathe once more the odors of
the Granada of my birth, and his prose was so bewitching that my camel seemed to move forwards
in time with the rise and fall of its rhythms.'' When the uncle dies, Hasan takes command of the
caravan and returns home with his first wife, while his sister Miriam is forced to the lepers' quarter
in Fez.
At the end of the fifteenth century, however, Fez was still enjoying great commercial prosperity and
was at the peak of its fame as a seat of learning, its mosques, and libraries being the resort of
students from many parts of the Muslim world, it was therefore the most natural haven for the exiles
from Granada.
Next, his travels took him eastward across the Sahara to Egypt en route to Mecca for the Hajj, the

for his break in Cairo. It was there that he met and married the beautiful Nur, widow of a nephew

In the 1400s, what is now known as present–day Spain, was quite different from how it is today. The

Monarchs. It took place over a course of ten years but it resulted in the addition of Granada to the

the conquest. (The Conquest of Granada) He was easily overtaken by the Christian troops because
his kingdom was in a civil war, rebelling

During the 15th century, there were five kingdoms in the Iberian Peninsula, but eventually became

the turning point in the kingdom was in the 15th century when Isabella of Castile tied the knot with

The Alambra And The Alhambra
After the Umayyad caliphate of Iberia splintered into small kingdoms across modern–day Andalusia
in the eleventh century, al–Andalus witnessed the reigns of three important powers: the Almoravid,
Almohad, and Nasrid dynasties. As each dynasty confronted the gradual encroachment from the
Christian north, most notably with Alfonso VI's conquest of Toledo in 1085. It would be the Nasrid
dynasty (1230–1492) who would ultimately witness the end of Muslim rule in Spain when they
surrendered to Isabella I and Ferdinand II in 1492 at Granada.
As a fortress and a palace, the Alhambra is arguably the most important fixture of Nasrid art and
architecture. The Alhambra, or "The Red One", was built on the remains of Roman fortifications,
just as the Great Mosque of Córdoba had been with spolia. Although the fortress had been built in
the ninth century given its location on a strategic point overlooking the city of Granada, the Nasrid
dynasty transformed the fortress into a royal city under Mohammed I (1238–1273). However, it was
under Yusuf I (1333–1353) and Mohammed V (1353–1391) that the Alhambra was transformed.
Yusuf I in particular emphasized the importance of art, "[beginning] a glorious age of Nasrid
cultural achievement... [under his rule was] where the Alhambra came into full glory" (Drayson 17).
Both rulers augmented the structure with the Alcazaba, the fortress component, and gardens that
would survive even through the brutal Granada War at the end of the fifteenth century.

The Accomplishments of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand...
Many people have heard of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. However, only some know
of all the things they accomplished. They might be best known for funding the voyages of
Christopher Columbus, but they also greatly contributed to the unity of Spain ("Isabella l").
Together, they brought many kingdoms on the Iberian Peninsula together to form what Spain is
today. Through Spain's unification, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella strengthened Spain into an
economic and dominant world power, enabling the spread of Christianity and the colonization of a

When Granada was finally taken control of, Isabella and Ferdinand began to take notice of
Columbus' proposition. They realized that the outcome would be very beneficial to their kingdom,
and it would not cost much money for them to fund the expedition ("Queen Isabella's Influence in
the New World"). They had also recently discovered some islands to the west, so they thought there
could be more. They concluded that funding Columbus was worth the effort (In Depth Info).
Ferdinand and Isabella knew that in order to bolster Spain they needed new sources of funding
themselves. They turned to the pope and he gave them rights to build the Catholic Church in areas
where the Moors had been driven from. He also published decrees giving them control over the
funds in the Americas. The Church became a crucial utensil in developing royal absolutism. The
New World also proved to be a great source of revenue for Spain ("Ferdinand V"). Columbus started
out on his first voyage in the middle of 1492. It turned out to be a great success and he won Spain
many places in South America. The king, queen, and the people of Spain were pleased with
Columbus. Isabella immediately ordered him to sail again. On this second voyage, he formed the
first European settlement in the Americas. Colonists that accompanied him began to criticize
Columbus and his adventures. However, Isabella continued to support him.

Until Spain colonized Nueva Granada, the individual tribes had successful government and social

survived wars, takeovers, destruction and disrepair. It is this history that gives the complex its
significance beyond the superficial beauty that made it famous.

Finally in 1491 the citadel surrendered and evacuated the Alhambra in 1492 to Ferdinand and

new monarchs implemented it still depresses me to think that only 3 of the original 7 palisades are
still standing in the Moorish style. However it is not solely do to the two original Christian monarch
who destroyed the palaces and much of the Moorish infrastructure. Ferdinand and Isabella built their
own quarters within the existing Medina as well as destroying many of the plaster roofs and
replacing them with a more traditional style roof emblazoned with their sigil in the "Sala de los

The Islamic Storming Of Spain
The Islamic storming of Spain was a tempestuous and conflicted time in history. Today it is often
portrayed by historians as a battle of good versus evil; a forfeiting of an ebullient culture that
diminished at the hand of Abd Al–Raḥmān 's Muslim–led army that began infiltrating Spain from
North Africa in AD 711. However, what ensued thereafter was a convergence of great knowledge,
trade innovation, and hydraulic technology that had not existed in the region before Islamic arrival.

Most of Europe, especially that of which was under Christian rule, was very skeptical of pagan texts
of the ancient Greeks and Romans and never came to study these writings due to discrimination.
Muslims, however, did not ignore these valuable teachings and strove to find new knowledge within
other cultures and societies. Much of Greek knowledge stems from the ancient Egyptians, the bulk
of it being preserved at the Library of Alexandria. During the Muslim occupation of Alexandria,
they had direct access to this elusive bank of knowledge and translated large amounts of books into
Arabic, including the bible. From this, Islamic society tapped into a great understanding of the world
around them and eventually brought this rich knowledge with them to the al–Andalus. Among
theses teachings, Muslims had a great understanding of irrigation and hydraulic systems passed on
from the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians, which would become a great asset to their
success in agriculture, landscaping, and gardening in Spain ("Al–Andalus History"). Virtually barren
lands of the Iberian Peninsula became flourishing centers of agriculture through the implementation

Christians and Jews were heavily taxed for the right to practice their own religions. Those who
converted to Islam, however, paid lesser taxes and had more privileges. Around 718, Pelagius, a

dominance in Spain. Due to his opposition of Muslim control, Pelagius and a group of 30–some men
were exiled and lived in a cave, refusing to pay taxes and harassing the Moors. Between 718 and
722, Pelagius and his small band of warriors fought and triumphed against the Moors at the Battle of

period of around 774 years where the Christian kings reclaimed the Iberian Peninsula from the
Islamic Moors. The Reconquista was not carried out by the Spanish alone, however. King
Charlemagne of France reclaimed the western Pyrenees and formed the Marca Hispanica to defend

Analysing The Moors
For the Love and Hatred of the Moors
Within the history of Spain there were periods of time in which the country saw and experienced
relative harmony and interfaith cooperation among the Christians, Muslims and Jews. This lasted up
until the Renaissance when the marriage of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon united

thou Moor of Moreria / There were mighty signs and aspects / On the day when thou wert born/
Calm and lovely was the ocean, / Bright and full the moon above. / Moor, the child of such an
aspect." These beautiful compliments and adulation immediately suggest a favorable depiction of
the Moors. However, as the ballad progresses we discover that the Moor is actually captive and
King John is smitten with Granada. This implies that because of this there might be some brewing
tension between the two. The

In the ballad La Perdida de Alhama / Woe is Me, Alhama (author and original date unknown,
translated by Lord Byron) the prose portrays the story of the Moorish King mournfully riding his
horse through the town of Alhama in Granada distraught by what has just been revealed to the
monarch by way of letters delivered by a messenger. He goes about crying out through the streets of
the town "woe is me, Alhama." Throughout the poem, this refrain relates to the reader the Moorish

Aztec Architecture Description
The history of Andalucía ranges from shifts in landownership over a span of many years. Located in
the southwestern part of Spain, Andalucía is comprises of the Iberian Peninsula. Land was being
conquered and re–conquered over the years. With the change in control of the land, palaces were
being constructed for the royalty. The Alhambra was constructed during the time of the Nasrid
dynasty. Located in what is now Granada, the Alhambra stretches across one full mile. It is one of
the most primary examples of Islamic architecture in the world, forming a fortress and a palace at
the same time.
Before construction of the Alhambra, land control shifted. In 550 BC the Carthaginians conquered
the area and named Elybirge. Early Iberian settlements inhabited the waterfront area by the Darro
River and expanded. In the 6th century the Visigoths took control until the Moors took control in the
8th century. The area would continue to change ownership within coming centuries, from the
Carthaginians to the Romans to the Visigoths, until Moorish civilizations would found the city we
now know as Granada. By the year 711 BC, the Muslim Empire began to overtake most of Spain.
The city of Granada was under control of the Moors. The city was the center of the expanding

In terms of dimension the room is a perfect square, about 40ft by 40ft. There is a central dome
ceiling that is about 70 feet high. This was the grand reception room, and the throne of the sultan
was placed opposite the entrance. The royalty would welcome their guests in this area. The space
served as a waiting room for the guests. The grand hall projects from the walls of the palace,
providing views in three directions. In this sense, it was a "mirador" from which the palace's
inhabitants could gaze outward to the surrounding landscape of the

The BBC Documentary 'Leo Africanus: A Man Between Worlds'
The BBC documentary Leo Africanus: A Man Between Worlds, was based on Leo Africanus as the
title suggests. When Africanus was born, it was stated the world was being dominated by the
Ottoman Empire, Al Andalus which was France and Spain, and the Holy Roman Empire. Africanus
became a famous writer by writing his own book which is where he describes Africa. Because of his
book, other countries became interested in the city of Timbuktu in Africa. The documentary shows
places where it is said that Africanus has been. There were also several people who spoke about
Africanus, such as professors, librarians, and other people who have researched him. Africanus was
born Muslim in Granada, but he is best known by his Latin name, Leo Africanus. In 1492, ... Show

But what made most people interested in was when Africanus was the way that he described the city
of Timbuktu in Africa. Africanus' book was published in the year 1550. His book was originally
published in Italian. Which I found kind of strange because Africanus is Muslim, so it is expected
that his book would be in Arabic. Because it was said in the documentary even though they are not
sure if it is true, that Africanus' mother was Jewish until she converted to Islam. The book ended up
being published in French and Latin, as well as in English in the 1600's. I would say that Africanus'
adventures would be what influenced his writing in his books. He would travel to different places
with his uncle which was during the year 1510 to Timbuktu. Even though he begun his journey in
the early 1500's, which was to places outside of Morocco. Africanus' book is what made the
Europeans really interested in the city of Timbuktu. The city was being described as a place where
there was a lot of gold. But when a French man named René Callié went he did not find the city as
the way that it was described. Callié described it as a mess of houses. Which it seems

Personal Narrative-My Journey To Granada Theater

  • 1. Personal Narrative-My Journey To Granada Theater It was about two hours until the doors opened and I was sitting in staring at my television, appearing to be in a trance. On the screen a mob of what looked like 30 or so zombies were chasing me through a maze of pilars and various piles of rubbish as I swiftly navigated the ceiling of an upside down temple in Tokyo. I was supposed to be headed to the ATM to withdraw gas money and a bit of spending money–in case I wanted to get a t–shirt or something but my Playstation's grip on me was as strong as ever. Fortunately, it wasnt long before my undead counterparts overwhelmed me and ended the game. I hopped up, grabbed my vynle copy of Return of 4eva and everything I would need for my journey, and darted out the door. I was embarking on my journey to the Granada Theatre where, after a lot of waiting, I would not only watch Big K.R.I.T. perform, but also I would also be able to meet him afterwards. Once inside my car, I plugged in the aux cord and sang along as Big Krit proceded to flood my speakers with one of his many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the performance came to a close, those that had purchased VIP tickets were instructed to stay for the meet and gree portion of the concert. Realizing that I had left my vinyl in the car, I rushed to security guard and asked if I could run to my car and get it. He said hurry, and i did just that! WHen I got back, I spent about twenty or so minutes regaining my breath until I noticed taht some of the concert staff pointing to the right end of the stage. • 3. The Fall Of The Moors Name Class DR. Date The Fall of the Moors In 1492, Christopher Columbus discovered the new world. That year also marked the fall of the Moors (Medieval Muslims). They ruled over the Moor Kingdom of Granada in the Iberian Peninsula from 711 to 1492, where the three Abrahamic religions lived in peace. In that year, the battle of Granada caused their great empire to fall. After this battle, Muslims were forced to convert to Christianity or be expelled from the land. This oppression went to the extent of forbidding any Islamic acts, behaviors, and scriptures, with violators being prosecuted, which resulted in unfair and unjust treatment for the Moors in Spain. The Moors arrived at the Iberian Peninsula in 711 by crossing the Mediterranean Sea near North Africa (Florian 20). Within seven years, the Iberian Peninsula (which they called Al–Andalus) was almost completely occupied by these people (De Luca et. al. 5). Moors had control of the majority of Iberian Peninsula, but, in late 718, King Visigoths Pelayo of Alcama, fought against the Moors and defeated them at the battle of Covadonga. Later on, they were defeated at another battle: the battle of Granada. The unity of Spain played heavily in this battle. It was between Aragon 's King Ferdinand and Isabella I, the Queen of Castile. They were married in 1469, soon after which the united forces of both states rose against the Moors (Florian 183). Their combined forces participated in the Reconquista, which led to the fall of ... • 5. What Is The Similarities Between The Lord Of The Flies And... Literature often has a meaning that is not expressed outright to the readers. While the Lord of the Flies by William Golding and the Blood Wedding by Federico Garcia Lorca may be understood as a rollicking tale about shipwrecked school boys and a tragic play about an entangled love story between four youngsters, the two works in fact implicitly criticize the societies in which the stories are set that are directly related to the social contexts of their production. While both the Lord of the Flies and the Blood Wedding do so through metaphoric characters and symbolism in the stories, the former is relatively more allegorical and its criticism tends to refer to all human societies rather than a specific one and the latter makes more use of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To begin with, Lorca satirizes the importance people place on tradition in their lives. The Bride's father, who deters the marriage of his daughter to Leonardo in reason of Leonardo's lack of land and money, symbolizes the preoccupation of people with land and property. This preoccupation is certainly echoed by the Bridegroom's mother as she places the amount of land and power as the first priority in her discussion with the Bride's father about their children's marriage. That is, Lorca casts doubt on the fact that the prime motivation of the marriages is material abundance of the children's families instead of the spiritual love between them. Besides, such worldly tradition, which seems to be supported by the society, represses the passion and natural instinct represented by the Bride and Leonardo. Unfortunately, like many lovers in the Spanish society at the time, the two are forced to betray their love and instincts in order to conform to the social conventions. The fact that the arranged marriage leads to tragic consequences at the end conveys Lorca's disproval of such traditions and preoccupation with materialism. Furthermore, Lorca also throws his criticism on the people's obsession with public opinion and the women's role in the society. The Bridegroom's mother, as well as Leonardo's wife, are forced to completely withdraw from the society and live the empty lives of widows who have to keep "the door always shut" and "nail up the windows" because of the social feudalism. Lorca, therefore criticizes such a subservient role of women in the society. Even though most women detest such inferiority and lack of freedom, they continue to follow such traditions due to the much attention they pay to public opinion, even in their greatest moments of anguish. Namely, when the Bridegroom's mother is informed about her son's death, she does not allow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Machiavelli's The Prince Essay Most people throughout history and today are probably in agreement that those who are in power, with rule over peoples should keep their word; however, as Machiavelli notes, those "princes" that have accomplished the most have done so through deception. A prince can fight with laws, in a civilized manner, or with force if needed. Machiavelli believes a prince should "imitate the fox in cunning as well as the lion in strength." So a prince must seem virtuous, while simultaneously deceiving those individuals who are willing to be deceived in order to fulfill his own interests. Machiavelli justifies this way of carrying oneself in that other princes cannot be expected to keep their word to you, so you must act in ways that are prosperous to your ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In an interview with King Ferdinand in 1483 after his capture, Boabdil offers his subservience to the Spanish Crown as ruler of Granada in exchange for his freedom. Ferdinand grants this to him. On Boabdil's return to Granada, however, he is no longer recognized by Islamic clerics as the sole, legitimate ruler. He returns again to Castile to meet with Ferdinand in 1486, this time he offers to aid Ferdinand and Isabella in conquering Granada as long as they leave him a small portion, again Ferdinand agrees. Boabdil succeeded in hindering El Zagal's troops, leading to a Spanish victory later. Boabdil keeps his word and surrenders the rest of Granada in exchange for a vast private domain and a Castilian allowance. Only one year later, King Ferdinand treats Boabdil just as he did every other Muslim, forcing him to cede his domain in Granada and leave the country. This was perfect execution of Machiavellian values, offering a deal because the reward far outweighed the risk in that the reward was conquering Granada once and for all. Then once Ferdinand got what he wanted, he proceeded to carry out policies that would prosper his own nation, and if those policies broke an agreement with a former quasi–ally then so ... • 9. Personal Narrative: My Trip To The Granada Theater When I first walked into the Granada Theatre I was amazed by the intricate detail put into the design of the venue. At first glance, it seemed to be an extremely high class venue, and it made sense why Professor Roy asked us to dress nicely. In all honesty I felt totally out of my element. I showed up a couple minutes late so they had me stand until the first piece was over to take my seat. The seriousness added to the layer of prestige that I had begun to attribute to the event. When I finally took my seat, I was astounded by the setup too. The piano was center stage. I was expecting an orchestra before I had arrived, but was not too disappointed to see just Yuja Wang. • 11. The Battle Of Covadong The Final Push Battle of Covadonga was the final push of numerous attempts of uprisings and rebellions that began in 718. During this time, King Pelayo resisted attempts by the Moors to gain control of Asturias. However, in 720, after sending out a force to Asturias, Pelayo and his forces of about 500 men were forced to retreat. The Moorish leader offered terms to surrender, but Pelayo refused. Al Kama, Moorish leader, ordered an attack. However, the Asturians and Pelayo inflicted major causalities and pushed back the Moors. The Moors soon began to retreat, but were attacked by larger Asturians forces who had gained support by villagers. This success ensured that part of Iberia remained in control of the Christians. As areas that used to be occupied by Muslims became vacant, kings brought in their own people to secure the borders. In Spain, the main areas of repopulation were places like the central Catalonia. During the Reconquista, the Christians, mainly from the northern kingdoms, used their power to create legal and political institutions. Many of these institutions still survive in Spain today ("Reconquista," 2016). The religious war and conquest for land made a significant impact on Spain, many of which you can see today. A significant impact the Reconquista had can be seen in Spain's population and demographics. Today, Catholic Christianity is the largest religion in Spain. The addition of a rival to my life was not enough for him. In loving someone else, he burned his past, both morally and materially. He dared to commit such an act of disavowal" From this extract, it is evident that Ramatoulaye was not at all happy with her husband. This is because he was the cause of her grief; he abandoned her after all those years of marriage. She was also exasperated due to the fact that not only did he want to get married to a woman, but he also wanted to be a "sugar–daddy". Therefore, she feels that the marriage was unnecessary. This is confirmed by the quote: "Was it madness, weakness, irresistible love? What inner confusion led Modou Fall to marry Binetou?" As we can see that Modou caused a lot of pain for poor Ramatoulaye; therefore, succumbing to death, I agree to the statement 'characters that cause immense pain to another, especially to their consorts, succumb to death.' In Arabic Al–Hamra' means "the red one" so the name Alhambra is probably derived from the colour of the sun–dried tapia, or bricks made of fine gravel and clay, of which the outer walls of the palace are built. Alhambra's Islamic palaces, as we know them today, were built for the last Muslim emirs in Spain and the court of the Nasrid dynasty. Moorish poets described it as "a pearl set in emeralds," an allusion to the colour of its buildings and the woods around them. In grade school, I was taught this rhyme to learn about Christopher Columbus. Most of what I learned about Christopher Columbus then, was that he thought the world was round (and others didn't); and that he wanted to sail to India, but messed up, and landed in America, calling the natives "Indians." As I grew older, I learned a little bit more about Columbus's trips to the Americas. I was told that Christopher Columbus wasn't as nice of a person as I was taught when I was younger. I learned that Columbus' heart was set on acquiring as much gold from the natives as possible. He turned them into slaves and brought diseases with him–from which whole tribes died off. While I was surprised to hear about these unfortunate actions, I was more surprised that I had never heard about them. At first, I was hesitant to believe these stories, but as we learned more about his travels, the stories seemed to be more realistic, and true. However, when I was able to read the extracts from Christopher Columbus' journal, I was able to better piece together the type of man Christopher Columbus was. Christopher Columbus was a leader, explorer, adventurer, thinker, and doer. Although he was rejected multiple times whilst trying to get the funds necessary to travel to India, he did not give up and continued to seek the approval of the Portuguese and Spanish monarchies. • 30. An Essay About The Alhambra Alhambra, a palace built in Granada, Spain, grew significantly in the 14th century. It was constructed by the Berbers of the Emirate of Granada in al–Andalus. It is built on a high–leveled land that overlooks the Granada city. The area where the Alhambra is built is a mountainous region, where the Nevada Mountains are ascending over the Alhambra palace. The area is known for its extreme temperature where it can be very cold or extra hot. The name "Alhambra", whose literal translation is "red fortress", is derived from the color of the bricks composing the outer walls, which is of made of clay and gravel. Portions were rebuilt in the Renaissance fashion, and a piece was destroyed to build an "Italianate palace designed by Pedro de Machuca in 1526". The Alhambra reflects the culture of the final centuries during the Moorish rule of Al Andalus. It incorporates extensive gardens– the Generalife. The combination of open spaces, water, constructed structures, and gardens, signify this palace. The palaces were built perpendicular to each other and they are centered around a courtyard with cortices on either side. His love and infatuation with the moon leads to his death. This poem not only tells the story of this young child's demise, but also shows the effects when someone is lured in by an appealing temptation. The poem uses many literary devices to enhance the meaning the words provide. The poem starts at the beginning of the story as the moon comes to visit the forge. The moon has now become ominous as it forewarns of the child's death. Spanish culture is once again brought into the poem as the moon becomes deathly. The moon has always been a figure of death in Spanish history and continues to be represented in that matter by this poem. The moon's sensual appeal balances its foreboding nature. The boy is enticed by the mystery of the moon and does not heed her warning. Once again the boy warns the moon, "flee, moon, moon, moon" (17), as he shows his continued persistence to save the moon he has been draw into. He warns that the gypsies are coming, but the moon will not leave its dance. The moon says, "young boy, leave me, don't step on / my starched whiteness" (19–20). This shows her lack of concern for the boy, which exemplifies her task to only attract him to her. Her starched whiteness once again contradicts her true mission to lead him to his demise. "Beating the drum of the plain" (22) stresses the intensity of the moment leading up to the point that "within the forge the young man has closed eyes" (23). The climax of the story has just occurred, as the child death has taken place. The Spanish belief that the moon is a bad omen has remained true with the little boy's eyes closed, signifying his death. • 36. The World And Empires By Anthony Pagden Peoples and Empires Throughout history there have been a multitude of different empires to rise up and conquer land, along with the people inhabiting that land. More often than not, these empires fell. Whether the empire was quickly abolished, or it maintained power for decades, most of them were over thrown. Anthony Pagden, who at the time of publication was a history professor at John Hopkins, wrote the book Peoples and Empires in 2003 to explain the history of the once "Great European Empires". These empires included, but are not limited to, the French, the Spanish, the British, and the Roman Empire. One major idea of the content focuses on how these particular empires justified their conquering, not only to themselves, but also to their followers and the people who rebelled against them. Conquerors would travel to the ends of the earth in order to obtain more land which in turn is more power. However, in order to do this they had to justify their actions to the individuals occupying that land. In doing so, they fabricated what they assumed were acceptable reasons as to why an empire was more luxurious, or in other words "better", than the systems they had in place before. The most common ideology between all of the empires was the simple idea of being "civilized" versus being "barbaric" or "savage". Pagden thoroughly explains how the empires used this ideology and coupled it with small force to justify their actions and the overall concept of an empire: "They ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The infamous Spanish Inquisition propelled those of the Jewish faith and heritage into the New World. Historians specializing in the Spanish Inquisition itself often begin their research mid–story, ignoring completely its roots, which date back to the thirteenth century. Instead, it is common for a book on the Inquisition to begin in the fifteenth century, with the expulsion of North African Muslims, or Moors, from Spain. Even in Toby Green's Inquisition: The Reign of Fear, a fourteen chapter book devoted to the subject, the author evasively states, "The Inquisition had been created in Spain within the past few years to target alleged bad Christians among the conversos." As noted by one historian, Gale Stewart, conversely, "the Inquisition had been an active force in Europe for over 250 years before it came to Spain." The Church, under the authority of Pope Innocent III (1161–1216), began enacting policies to purge society of all heretics, as they were seen as a threat to papal authority, and therefore, a threat to the governing forces who looked to the Pope for political advisement. Kamen notes the ambiguous pressure on Jews, as despite the anti–semitism of contemporary Europe, the 'Aragonese crown protected the Jews and conversos firmly, rejecting all attacks on them' and how any existing anti–Semetic legislation went unenforced (Kamen 15). Even after Ferdinand and Isabella initiated their reign in 1474, the monarchs were 'never personally anti–Semitic' and their intervention in domestic politics demonstrated an 'impressive picture of the monarchy protecting its jews' (Kamen, 16). In actuality, the inception of the Inquisition and the subsequent expulsion of the Jewish population was prompted by the actions of 'Judaizers', who were made up of conversos who had attempted to persuade newly assimilated Christians to return to their original Jewish faith. The efforts of these Judaizers concerned the crown and as a result the Inquisition was officially founded on September 27, 1480 as a means of regulating the the disruptive and disobedient conversos. With the war of Granada, the conquest was on a much smaller scale, which allowed the Spanish to try new tactics with much less of a risk if they failed. Hasan accompanies his uncle on his first tactful mission, and as their caravan roam the huge Sahara, his uncle fills in the historic gaps for young Hasan, teaching him the art of storytelling. ''His tone was so reassuring,'' Hasan later recalls, ''that it made me breathe once more the odors of the Granada of my birth, and his prose was so bewitching that my camel seemed to move forwards in time with the rise and fall of its rhythms.'' When the uncle dies, Hasan takes command of the caravan and returns home with his first wife, while his sister Miriam is forced to the lepers' quarter in Fez. At the end of the fifteenth century, however, Fez was still enjoying great commercial prosperity and was at the peak of its fame as a seat of learning, its mosques, and libraries being the resort of students from many parts of the Muslim world, it was therefore the most natural haven for the exiles from Granada. Next, his travels took him eastward across the Sahara to Egypt en route to Mecca for the Hajj, the annual Pilgrimage. The Alambra And The Alhambra After the Umayyad caliphate of Iberia splintered into small kingdoms across modern–day Andalusia in the eleventh century, al–Andalus witnessed the reigns of three important powers: the Almoravid, Almohad, and Nasrid dynasties. As each dynasty confronted the gradual encroachment from the Christian north, most notably with Alfonso VI's conquest of Toledo in 1085. It would be the Nasrid dynasty (1230–1492) who would ultimately witness the end of Muslim rule in Spain when they surrendered to Isabella I and Ferdinand II in 1492 at Granada. As a fortress and a palace, the Alhambra is arguably the most important fixture of Nasrid art and architecture. The Alhambra, or "The Red One", was built on the remains of Roman fortifications, just as the Great Mosque of Córdoba had been with spolia. Although the fortress had been built in the ninth century given its location on a strategic point overlooking the city of Granada, the Nasrid dynasty transformed the fortress into a royal city under Mohammed I (1238–1273). However, it was under Yusuf I (1333–1353) and Mohammed V (1353–1391) that the Alhambra was transformed. Yusuf I in particular emphasized the importance of art, "[beginning] a glorious age of Nasrid cultural achievement... [under his rule was] where the Alhambra came into full glory" (Drayson 17). Both rulers augmented the structure with the Alcazaba, the fortress component, and gardens that would survive even through the brutal Granada War at the end of the fifteenth century. ... They might be best known for funding the voyages of Christopher Columbus, but they also greatly contributed to the unity of Spain ("Isabella l"). Together, they brought many kingdoms on the Iberian Peninsula together to form what Spain is today. Through Spain's unification, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella strengthened Spain into an economic and dominant world power, enabling the spread of Christianity and the colonization of a New World. They realized that the outcome would be very beneficial to their kingdom, and it would not cost much money for them to fund the expedition ("Queen Isabella's Influence in the New World"). They had also recently discovered some islands to the west, so they thought there could be more. They concluded that funding Columbus was worth the effort (In Depth Info). Ferdinand and Isabella knew that in order to bolster Spain they needed new sources of funding themselves. They turned to the pope and he gave them rights to build the Catholic Church in areas where the Moors had been driven from. He also published decrees giving them control over the funds in the Americas. The Church became a crucial utensil in developing royal absolutism. The New World also proved to be a great source of revenue for Spain ("Ferdinand V"). Columbus started out on his first voyage in the middle of 1492. It turned out to be a great success and he won Spain many places in South America. The king, queen, and the people of Spain were pleased with Columbus. Isabella immediately ordered him to sail again. The palace city gained its status as an international monument in the 1870s, and is now the most visited tourist attraction in Spain, surpassing both La Sagrada Familia and El Prado, with 2.4 million people visited Granada's Moorish palace in 2014. However its popularity and beauty were hard fought as it survived wars, takeovers, destruction and disrepair. It is this history that gives the complex its significance beyond the superficial beauty that made it famous. It is at this point that the palaces begin to fall prey to the new owners who like the old ones wished to place their own mark on the complex. And though it is important to note the changes the new monarchs implemented it still depresses me to think that only 3 of the original 7 palisades are still standing in the Moorish style. However it is not solely do to the two original Christian monarch who destroyed the palaces and much of the Moorish infrastructure. Ferdinand and Isabella built their own quarters within the existing Medina as well as destroying many of the plaster roofs and replacing them with a more traditional style roof emblazoned with their sigil in the "Sala de los Mocárabes." But these changes are very superficial compared to what Charles V decided to construct next to the Nasrid palaces. Once he gained the throne Charles V originally wanted the capital of Spain to be in Granada, and as such as ruler he wished to construct his own palace that usurped the old rooms in size and style. Most of Europe, especially that of which was under Christian rule, was very skeptical of pagan texts of the ancient Greeks and Romans and never came to study these writings due to discrimination. Much of Greek knowledge stems from the ancient Egyptians, the bulk of it being preserved at the Library of Alexandria. During the Muslim occupation of Alexandria, they had direct access to this elusive bank of knowledge and translated large amounts of books into Arabic, including the bible. From this, Islamic society tapped into a great understanding of the world around them and eventually brought this rich knowledge with them to the al–Andalus. Analysing The Moors For the Love and Hatred of the Moors Within the history of Spain there were periods of time in which the country saw and experienced relative harmony and interfaith cooperation among the Christians, Muslims and Jews.
