• Curriculum is the crux of the whole educational
process
• The term curriculum is derived from the Latin
word currere which means path.
• Curriculum is the path through which the student
has to go forward In order to reach the goals of
education
• Curriculum for a course of study may be
conceived as the totality of experience a pupil is
exposed to within the boundaries of school and
outside
5. • Hidden curriculum refers to the unwritten
unofficial and often unintended lessons, values
and perspectives that students learn in school.
• Term was coined by Philip Jackson in 1968
• Formal curriculum consists of courses, lessons,
and learning activities and also knowledge and
skills educators intentionally teach to students.
• Hidden curriculum consists of the unspoken
social and cultural messages that are
communicated to students while they are in
school.
6. • A hidden curriculum is a side effect of an
education which are learned but not openly
intended such as transmission of norm,
values, and beliefs conveyed in the classroom.
• Hidden curriculum concept is based on the
fact that students absorb lessons in course of
study eg ; how should interact with peers,
teachers and other adults.
• It is acknowledged as hidden because it is
often unexamined by the students and
teachers while the lessons reinforced are
often accepted as status quo by the
community.
7. • Hidden curriculum can reinforce the lessons of
formal curriculum or it can even contradict the
formal curriculum
• Hidden curriculum begins early in a child’s
education.
• It includes behaviour, attitudes, and
perspectives that students pick up while they
are at schools.
• It is important as much as formal curriculum.
• Students often forget the lessons taught by
teacher after several years but the effect of
hidden curriculum remains in his mind.
8. • Hidden curriculum may contribute to cultural
expectation, socialization, values, and
perspectives of an individual .
• It is a broad concept and it is not easy to tie in
down to one particular view point
• The hidden curriculum teach pupil ‘‘the way
life is” and that education is something that is
done to them rather than something that they
do.
