Best five principles for teaching junior or high school students
There are twelve principles of language learning and teaching which have the
advantages and also the disadvantages. Considering various things such as nation
culture, the habits of even several small variables that can affect the effectiveness of a
teaching method. These principles will also provide various facilities for learning, of
course if the teacher can master the principles in teaching and need to choose which is
suitable for students in implementation. In my opinion the best five principle methods
for teaching junior or high school students are Direct Method, Total physical response,
Suggestopedia, Cooperative learning and Silent Way.
Direct method was invented by Maximilian Berlitz in 1887, this method later
well-known as Berlitz method. Strategies for teaching include the teacher asks
questions of any nature and the students answer. In Direct Method have the advantage
to cognitive associations, real world relevance. This method expected students to be
good in oral fluency and conversation ability. The characteristic of the Direct Method
are; instructions was conducted exclusively in the L2; Oral comuminication and
listening skills were taught in small classes; Methodology consisted mainly of modeling
and practice; everyday, easily identified vocabulary was used; Grammar was thought
inductively.
TPR or Total Physical Response, this method is developed by James Asher in
1977, this method came from the idea of the memory is increased if it is stimulated, or
“traced”. In this method learners not forced to speak too early, have low-anxiety
situation and also build community between the students. That is the advantages of
Total physical response because the learning process is carried out with the teacher
giving instructions to students in the form of command sentences and then followed by
feedback from students in the form of a physical response, it is kind of the teacher is
play ar role as a director and the student as the actor.
The next method is Suggestopedia, it is a teaching method, which focuses on
how to deal with the relationship between mental potential and learning ability and it is
2. very appropriate to use in teaching speaking for young language learners (Xue,
2005). Suggestopedia is an effective comprehensible input based method with a
combination of desuggestion and suggestion to achieve super learning. Desuggestion
means unloading the memory banks, or reserves, of unwanted or blocking memories.
Suggestion then means loading the memory banks with desired and facilitating
memories. The most important objective of suggestopedia is to motivate more of
students’ mental potential to learn and which obtained by suggestion. The goals of this
method are reading ability, acquisition of vocabulary and orql communication.
Suggestopedia also have low-anxiety situation same like Total Physical Response.
Cooperative learning method is where in each group consists of students of
various levels of ability that perform various learning activities to enhance their
understanding of the subject matter being studied. Teaching and learning strategy that
emphasizes shared attitudes or behaviors in working or helping among others in the
structure of regular cooperation in groups, consisting of two or more people. Each group
member is responsible for not only learning what is taught but also to help colleagues
learn, so that together achieve success. According to Lie (2000) the principle of the
cooperative learning model is positive interdependence, individual responsibility, face
to face, communication between members and evaluation of group processes. All
students strive until all group members have succeeded in understanding and
completing it.
The last method si Silent Way, Silent Way is a teaching method created by
Caleb Cattegno, in this method the teacher is only silent and will only give instructions
in a short time. this Gattegno method are that learning is made easier if the learner gets
or creates new things compared to remembering and repeating what must be learned.
Learning is facilitated by using physical objects. Learning is facilitated by solving
problems that involve the material being taught. According to Jerome Bruner, an
educational philosopher and psychologist, teachers and learners are in a more
cooperative position. Learners are not only listeners but also play an active role in
learning. (Bruner 1966: 83). And I think it is suitable for the curriculum which the
student needs to be active.
In conclusion, the five principle methods have own way to teach. So it depends
on the teacher and also the student’s condition, curriculum and another things. Teacher
3. needs to know the student correctly to choose the most effective method and mastering
that method of teaching.
