INSTEAD OF DIRECTLY COOLING THE BUILDING WITH THE HELP OF COLD AIR I HAVE PROPOSED THE USE OF COLD WATER FOR WHICH
CHILLING TOWERS HAVE BEEN PROVIDED .THE COLD WATER CAN BE PASSED THROUGH THE PIPES UNDER THE FLOORING WITH THE
HELP OF PUMPS AND CIRCULATED THROUGH OUT THE BUILDING. COOLING OF AIR DIRECTLY FROM AIR CONDITIONERS IS NOT
GRADUAL AND AIR REMAINS COLD FOR LESS AMOUNT OF TIME . HOWEVER WATER REMAINS COLD FOR MORE AMOUNT OF TIME THUS
KEEPING THE AIR IN CONTACT WITH THE FLOOR, ALSO COLD FOR MORE AMOUNT OF TIME BECAUSE OF WHICH THE CHILLING TOWERS
NEED TO FUNCTION LESS NUMBER OF TIMES AND DURATION THAN DIRECT AIR CONDITIONERS.

PRISONS IN INDIA ARE DONOT EXACTLY ACT AS A PLACE OF CONTEMP0LATION FOR MOST PRISONERS BECAUSE OF POOR
INFRASTRUCTURE AND PLANNING. MORE OVER ALL MOST ALL THE PRISONS BUILT IN INDIA ARE FROM THE PRE-INDEPENDENCE PERIOD.
HENCE I WANTED TO MAKE A NEW PRISON WITH BETTER FACILITIES AND TO HAVE AN INFRASTRUCTURE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN
EXISTING PRISONS
RESEARCH
I HAD DONE EXTENSIVE RESEARCH ABOUT
PRISONS AND ALSO HAD AN OPPORTUNITY
TO MEET WITH THE JAILER AND SOME
INMATES FROM ALIPORE JAIL IN INDIA, WHO
HAD COME OUT ON PAROLE TO GIVE A
DANCE PERFORMANCE IN MUMBAI. THROUGH
MY RESEARCH ALONG WITH VARIOUS DESIGN
ASPECTS I HAVE ALSO LEARNED THAT THE
PRISONERS, IN MAXIMUM CASES HAD
COMMITTED CRIME OUT OF NECESSITY AND
ALMOST ALL OF THEM ARE READY TO
CHANGE, IF GIVEN, A CONDUCIVE
ENVIRONMENT.

OF MY FIRST CONCEPTUAL ATTEMPTS TO DESIGN IN THIS SITE. THE MAIN DESIGN PRINCIPLE WAS ABOUT USING A SHAPE PARTICULARLY
AN OCTAGON FOR THE STRUCTURES. BASIC AIM IN THIS DESIGN WAS TO TRY TO REDUCE BLIND SPOTS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE

A R C H I T E C T U R A L D E S I G N 2012-2013
The Faculty Medal is an award, first instituted in 2006, by the faculty of Sir JJ College of Architecture to be given to the best design from a competition
organized by the college. The Architectural Design Competition is for participation by all students in the college. The themes of the design competition
shall address pressing urban, social and civic issues in the city of Mumbai.Each entry is intended to generate alternatives that can transform the city
through design excellence. The best entries of the competition are intended to be put on display to the city at large
Spaces between Buildings: Stitching Mumbai together
Aim: The aim is to adapt and use leftover spaces between buildings in
Mumbai for public purposes and amenities.
Goals of the Design:
The redesign/urban insert using spaces between
existing buildings should create a vibrant space for educational,
recreational, community or other useful public activities.
The proposed projects should have a positive social and
cultural impact on the target community.
social tool, which applied thoughtfully, has the power to shape
human cultural and economic activity.
The final design should be seamless between the
existing built form and the new insertions
Site:
The design proposal should first introduce the local context. This
could be any neighborhood, anywhere in Mumbai. One
neighborhood is not favored over another, recognizing the fact
that a middle-class context can be as deprived as poor
neighborhoods when it comes to social infrastructure.
Design Guidelines:
Find a relevant site in Mumbai that is a leftover space between two existing buildings (alleys, house
gullies, setbacks, ignored spaces) that is around 3.0 to 3.5 meters wide. Any length longer than the width
is acceptable. The site should be accessible from a public road or footpath.
Design an architectural insert that will revitalize the surroundings as well as provide a vital urban amenity.
The insert should be accessible by public, but can be of specific benefit to the immediate neighborhood.
Your design should be contemporary and inspiring. Barrier free environments and those with a minimal
dependence on energy consumption will be valued as design entries.
30. COMPETITION
FACULTY MEDAL: SOCIAL SPACE FOR STUDENTS
IN MUMBAI AND NAVI MUMBAI IT IS A VERY COMMON THING TO SEE SCHOOL CHILDREN USING
FOOTPATHS , STREETS OR BUS STOPS AND RAILWAY STATIONS AS THEIR PLACE OF FUN AND FROLIC AS WELL
AS FOR STUDYING. THE SITE THAT I HAVE SELECTED IS LOCATED IN THE VASHI GAOTHAN AREA IN NAVI
MUMBAI. THIS AREA IS BASICALLY A SMALL SETTLEMENT INSIDE THE VASHI CITY LIMITS AND CONSISTS OF G TO
G+4 STRUCTURES. THE RESIDENTS OF THIS AREA ARE TENANTS AND SUB TENANTS RESULTING IN VERY LITTLE
OR NO PLACE FOR CHILDREN AND STUDENTS TO INTERACT AND STUDY AT HOME. MORE OVER LACK OF
PLAY GROUNDS AND OPEN SPACES IN THIS AREA HAS RESULTED IN CHILDREN USING STREETS FOR STUDIES
AND INTERACTION.
THE SITE
THE SELECTED SITE IS MARKED IN RED. THIS SITE IS A SPACE BETWEEN TWO BUILDINGS WHICH HAS A
WIDTH OF 3M AT THE ENTRANCE AND INCREASES TO 3.4M. BECAUSE THE WIDTH OF THE SITE IS LESS AND
TIGHT, I HAVE USED THE CONCEPT OF RAMPS AND FLAT SPACES TO BE
CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS. THE STRUCTURE PROPOSED IS A
STEEL STRUCTURE WITH I-SECTIONS (ISMB 250) AS SUPPORTING MEMBERS.

THE CLIENT AND CONCEPT: THE CLIENT HERE IS THE
