1. Luther King Jr
The fight for racial equality between the African American and Caucasian races in Civil Rights
Movement of the 1950s and 1960s was an extraordinary point in history. Two of the leaders of this
movement were Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. These two leaders were almost
complete opposites of each other in how they acted. One of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous
speech, "I Have a Dream" had shown that passion and faith can restore the broken promises of
America and its government. This was most likely due to how Dr. King grew up. Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. had grown up in a balanced, benevolent family with his father and grandfather who were
part of the ministry. Martin Luther King Jr. was able to establish a secure impression on what ...

Martin Luther King and Malcolm X were almost the complete opposites of each other. Even their
message, tone, and sentence structure were different. Dr. King's message was about how passion and
faith could restore the broken promises of America and its government, tone being inspiring and
using imagery, and sentence structure having compound complex sentences. Malcolm X's message
on the other hand was about how such things as passion and faith will do nothing to help their
problems, tone being angry and frustrated, and sentence structure being brief and straight–to–the–
point. It is very surprising how dissimilar these two men were with how they ended up in

Imagine you were brutally beaten, or even killed because of your race and your family was
threatened due to their religion. Imagine you lived in a place, where everywhere you went was
segregated with signs that say "Whites only" and "Blacks only". This is what life was like for Martin
Luther King Jr. during the 1960's until he died. Martin Luther King Jr, was an iconic figure that led
the Civil rights Movement from the 1950s to 1968 (Biography.com editors). To fully grasp what

I have a dream that one day everyone will understand what Martin Luther King Jr said in his
infamous speech on August 28, 1963, and recognize the power and beauty in his words. In the "I
Have a Dream" speech, Martin Luther King, Jr. persuades the citizens of the United States that they
should no longer accept segregation, and all men should be created equal, as our Constitution states.
In this fight though, we can not use violence, but use the power of words, and not stop until every
human being is free. This speech was given in a time where black people were made to think that
they were equal with white people, when in actuality, they were "separate but equal" which is not
the same thing. This is when called segregation flourished and eventually, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
had enough of this injustice and he spoke out to the citizens of the United States and the world to
fight for freedom. This speech used all of the rhetorical devices: ethos, logos, and pathos, and it used
such powerful, discrete language that not only persuaded the reader, but entertained them, drawing
in his audience after every word. Its rhythm made it stay with people, haunting them. He truly made
it clear of the awful ways the African American people were being treated, connecting to them,
making them feel something, making the reader want to listen to him and follow King with every
step he took. In the "I Have a Dream" speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his biggest main idea

Why was Martin Luther King Jr. such an inspiration to African Americans in America? Martin
Luther King Jr. was an American minister, Civil Rights leader, and activist who had a strong belief
in nonviolent protests (history.com; Martin Luther King Jr.). He was the leader behind the
Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington which were eventually effective and a law
was passed to end racial discrimination (history.com; Martin Luther King Jr.). On December 1,
1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on the bus. This
caused activists to organize a bus boycott that would last 381 days, and they chose Martin Luther
King to be their leader. By November of 1956, the supreme court passed a law ... Show more

On August of 1968, the voting rights act was passed by congress, which allowed all African
Americans the right to vote as stated on the 15th amendment. On april 4 1968, Martin Luther King
Jr. was assassinated but is still remembered and honored for all his achievements during the civil
rights movement. The assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. was an act done by the face of racism
and hate. In the spring of 1968, Martin luther King Jr. along with other SCLC members were called
to Memphis, Tennessee to support a sanitation workers strike. They were going to protest unfair
wages and unsafe working conditions. On April 3, King gave his last speech at the Mason Temple
Church in Memphis (history.com; Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination). "I've seen the promised
land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to
the promised land. And I'm happy tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man.
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord." were some of the words stated by Martin
Luther King Jr. during his last speech (history.com; Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination). The
following day Martin Luther King was standing on the second floor balcony of the Lorraine Motel

hour later at the age of 39 on April 4, 1968 (history.com; Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination).

After Martin Luther King Jr. presenting his speech known as "I have a dream" on March 1963, now
five decades has passed. We were once again forced to ask ourselves: did we yet have a long way?
A 21–year–old white man, Dylann Roof, killed nine African–American people at the Emanuel
African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C. on Wednesday, June 17. They gathered for
Bible study. The mass murder has acted as an anti–black racist with radical violent statements of
African–Americans. Mr. Roof posted a few views of flying the white power flag on his Facebook
page several days before the tragedy. And his friend said that signs had been showed up but nobody
took it serious. The news shocked the nation since the struggles of race have been brought up
several times among the year. People around the nation mourned the deaths after the tragedy
happened. At the same time, similar issues happen repeatedly lead people to self–examine. No
matter the massacre occurred in Charleston, the police shooting in Cleveland or Boston, all of these
facts lead us to a same destination: the conflicts between the people in different skin tone. Although
52 years from the date of the speech delivered have passed, these issues are still there. Moreover,
they even go further on an unexpected path.
Mr. Roof, the mass murder, picked up the view of anti–black evidently on his Facebook page a few
days before he finally sat in the church. As his friend said, Mr. Roof claimed to "start a civil

Martin Luther King Jr. is accepted by many as the most influential figure in the civil rights
movement. In his protests, participants would refuse unjust laws and disrupt everyday life by
marching or sitting in squares, spreading awareness of their concerns. The marches in particular
were highly effective, garnering massive news coverage and sympathy for the protestors. In order to
grow and maintain the sympathy generated by this coverage, King also advocated a strict non–
violence policy. His methods played a key role in desegregating cities throughout the South,
including Birmingham, as well as in the passing of the voting rights act. This strategy for protest is
still widely used today, namely in large parts of the Black Lives Matter movement. King's style of
peaceful civil disobedience is highly effective, allowing enough disobedience to gain attention,
while avoiding violence to maintain sympathy and discussion.
One of the key components of King's movement was the usage of civil disobedience. King
advocated the breakage of segregation laws, in addition to any other unjust law. He states that "one
has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. I would agree with St. Augustine that 'an unjust
law is no law at all'" (Howard–Pitney, 79). King supported the breakage of these laws to draw
attention to their unfairness. He states "I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience
tells him is unjust and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order

21. Martin Luther King Jr Diction
The United States had struggled with racism and segregation for many years before 1963. However,
Martin Luther King Jr had a global goal to end racism and segregation. In the I Have a Dream
speech by Martin Luther King Jr, the speech was given on August 28th, 1963 in front of countless
African Americans fighting for their right to freedom. Martin Luther King Jr's argument utilizes
diction, imagery, and similes to demand that America needs to change the social norms that have
developed over time. Martin Luther King Jr. uses strong diction to bring up the idea of change
within the United States. He uses the word, "shameful" to open the eyes of the audience when
talking about how the African Americans have been treated for many years. Martin Luther King Jr.
begins discussing the past, in order to compare the differences between what was happening then
compared to what he wants to change, and how he plans on changing segregation and racism around
the world. Martin Luther King Jr., also uses the strong word, "insufficient" in order to argue that
African Americans are not having the same rights and opportunities that most of the whites are
having at the time. Although Martin Luther King Jr. appears to be using his angry diction in order to
guide many Americans towards change within the community, his effective use of strong diction
seems to push the audience in order to make the change that the United States citizens want. The
angry diction that Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15 1929–April 4, 1968) Brief Summary (of who MLK Jr. is):
Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and an activist who led the civil rights movement in
the 1950. He was a fundamental force behind the civil rights movement that ended legal
segregation. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. But he was sadly assassinated in 1968
on a second floor balcony of Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee... Childhood: Martin Luther
was never poor. He lived with a middle class family but his family was very religious. His father and
grandfather were Baptist preachers. He would succeed his father as pastor of Ebenezer Baptist
church in Atlanta. He lived in Auburn Avenue, where there was the country's most prosperous black
businesses and churches. During his childhood he had a (basically normal) life but being black
(before the civil rights movement) he experienced segregation in the south firsthand. He said when
he was six; his playmate (who was white) told Martin that his parents wouldn't let him play with
Martin because the children were now attending segregated schools. During those years, Martin
could always rely on his maternal (Mom' side) grandmother. But in 1941; when Martin was 12,
Martin's grandmother Jennie Celeste Parks Williams died of a heart attack while Martin was

History is something that we all learn in school. American history is important for me especially
because I am an American citizen and it is something I love to study. Segregation is something that
the U.S. has always been late on. When you think about civil rights who do you think about? Martin
Luther King Jr.? There are a lot of civil right activist who are cast away in Martin Luther King Jr.'s
shadow and they rarely get their stories told. I agree, that Martin Luther King Jr. is a person we
should mention in our history books, but we should not just "glorify" him and leave the others
castaway in his shadow. What Americans need to understand is that all races that are non–white
were segregated and the African Americans were not the only people who suffered there were many

We always talk about the civil rights movement in our U.S. history, but we only see one–side of the
story, and we tend to forget about the other people who were involved. I might be a little bit bias, but
from being a history major and actually studying history a lot of things slip through the cracks, when
it comes to civil right activist most people will think about Martin Luther King Jr., but the truth is
that there are others: for example, Cesar Chavez. Cesar Chavez is usually cast away in the shadow
of Martin Luther King Jr., and he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. What I have notice is that
U.S. history is painted in black and white. We as Americans need to start seeing the world in color.
African Americans were not the only people to face oppression and segregation, and you rarely hear
their story. Being Hispanic I never knew that we were treated like garbage, but that is how the

"A nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their
character" (King 18). That was the dream of many black Americans. Many great leaders chose to
speak out about their lack of rights. Some adopted the route of trying to change people's views
through peace some through violence. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. chose to follow the nonviolent
path. Dr. King brought many together for peace, he inspired many people throughout America, and
he and his dream still play a role in our daily lives.

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We

resources to relate to the Declaration of Independence When it says that "all men are created equal."
Today, everyone, black, white, yellow, male, or female, enjoy equal rights. "I believe that unarmed
truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality." (King 4). Unconditional love for all
peoples is a great quality that King had, and many people today have modeled after. "When you
suddenly find your tongue twisted and your speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six–
year–old daughter why she cannot go to the public amusement park that has just been advertised on
television, and see tears welling up in her little eyes when she is told that Funtown is closed to
colored children" (King 12). Now, all children are permitted in amusement parks. Many black
children also couldn't get an education. Today everyone from kindergarten to twelfth grade is
entitled to acquire a free education. "I have a dream that ... children will one day live in a nation
where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." (King

Martin Luther King Jr. was a leader in the Civil Rights Era, advocating for the Civil Rights Act's
passage and eventually passage of the Voting Rights Act in the 1960s. In his capacity as a Civil
Rights leader, MLK delivered his famous "I have a dream" speech after the march for Civil Rights
in Washington, D.C. His speech was delivered on August 28th in front of the Lincoln Memorial. In
his speech, MLK made sure to emphasize the hope that many African Americans had in the United
States. Furthermore, MLK makes it clear that hope to him is defined as, "Sons of former slaves and
sons of former slave owners can sit down at the table of brotherhood... that Mississippi will
someday be turned into an oasis of freedom and justice... that [his] children will not be judged by
the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." (King, 219) MLK's sense of hope is
shared by his need for the humane and equal treatment of African Americans. Moreover, MLK
stands and speaks in front of Abraham Lincoln's National Monument, alluding to the historic signing
of the Emancipation Proclamation which abolished slavery. The significance of this allusion helps to
show the progress that has yet to be made, the fact that African Americans 100 years later still need
to fight to be treated like human beings. MLK hopes to lead a movement which will see the
abolishment of segregation between people of color and white people, as well as the right for

it is the unfair time where Newman beans can put food on the table. Or their kids should people get
kicked out of their home because they can't pay their bills. Is that how it should work. In many ways
the laws back then weren't good and are still not good today.
There are good and bad there are many good people in the world and many bad in the world. Some
people judge by their social group or ethnic background and many are not what they say. Because
the right can be wrong and the wrong can be right.
If Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was here in our society he would be disappointed at what the economy
is doing such as, killing the innocent and lots of unfair arrests. If he were to be here he would be
mad because people are making a bad impression on them self. So many this group of people are

The society needs to boost up help clean up neighborhoods. Make everything equal not to say like

society would look for. Most epic heroes are fictional, but MLK was someone who was extremely
inspirational and considered a real life hero. He was well known hero for his civil rights movement
and being a start to end racism. Martin Luther King, Jr embodies the characteristics of an epic hero
because he is capable of deeds of great strength and courage, fights like a great warrior, and has
earned a great reputation around the world.

Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the heroes that made an enormous impact on society and the history
of the United States. King was born in January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. It was a difficult time
in the world and he finds it very difficult to play with other boys in town. Their parents never let
them play with poor Michael (which is his original name). He doesn't realize it at the time, but the
color of his skin is the cause of many injustices for the rest of his life. His family has always had an
important role in church since before Michael was born. At the age of 6, Michael and his family
travel to Europe. While visiting Germany, Michael and his father change their names to Martin
Luther King and Martin Luther King Jr. At the age of 15 King graduated from high school, years
later after attending different colleges, he moves to Boston and graduated from Boston University.
While living in Boston, he met and married Coretta Scott and later gave birth to two sons and two
daughters. While having a happy life with his wife and kids at home, he's still feeling he had a larger
calling than himself. Over the years, King was part of many preach protest; he preaches for peace
and for equal rights not for only African–American, but for every person in the world. Whether the
words came out of his mouth or his pen, he knew how to stir emotion, and how to move people into
action. He had done so many speeches and protests that strike for the rights of the society. One of

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a key leader and activist in the African–American Civil Rights
Movement. He fought against racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. Many Americans of
all races admired Martin Luther King as a symbol of leadership and what real movements look like.
The Black Lives Matter movement started after the non–guilty verdict of the killing of Trayvon
Martin. It campaigns against police brutality, calling for racial justice and pushing for the progress
of our civil rights in the 21st century. Since this era is much more technologically advanced then
back then, the type of racially motivated acts is different from those committed during the civil
rights era, but the core problem of systemic racism remains the same. That being said, despite the
differences the Black Lives Matter movement should be considered as the new Civil Rights
movement and would undoubtedly be supported by Martin Luther King Jr. The 1960s movement
certainly addressed the civil and political rights that were denied to black people, rights we take for
granted now, such as the access and use of public accommodations, the right to vote, fair
employment and housing opportunities. However, it did not did not directly confront the racialized
misconduct black people endured, and even now continue to endure, at the hands of the police. The

Mahatma Gandhi, King fought for equality for all African Americans. King not only fought for
equality, but he also fought for the right to vote and for the victims of unfairness all through
peaceful protesting. He had a splendid speaking ability, which allowed him to reveal the demands of
African Americans for social justice. King's fluent appeal won the support of billons of people,
black and white, which made him famous. In 1964 he won the Nobel Peace Prize for leading
nonviolent civil rights affirmation. Regardless of King's stress on nonviolence, he started to become
the target of violence. Back in Montgomery, Alabama, white racists bombed his home, and threw
rocks at him in Chicago. Finally, at the age of 39, violence took his life as an assassin shot and killed

faith in Jesus Christ influenced his actions, values, and beliefs in multiple ways including King
leading peaceful protests, his belief of being kind and fair to everyone, and values including
determination and persistence. King believed that peaceful protests were the ideal revolution,
inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. While Gandhi was not a Christian, rather a Hindu, Martin Luther
King Jr. believed that many of Gandhi's principles related to Christianity, "Gandhi was probably the
first person in history to lift the love ethic of Jesus above mere interaction between individuals to a
powerful and effective social force on a large scale. Christ furnished the spirit and motivation, and
Gandhi furnished the method." (MLK). King concluded Christ was the basis of Mahatma Gandhi's
teachings and used his example in his actions. Martin Luther also believed that throughout all the
chaos in the upheaval of traditions, you should always remain kind and fair towards those on your
side, or the opponent. This belief was heavily influenced by Jesus Christ and his teachings to love
your enemy and to be kind towards everyone, shown in multiple situations in the Bible, shown in

History is indisputably dense with revolts and uprisings against forms of oppression and injustices.
Whatever the reason for the insurrection, it was likely violent and involved someone's overthrow,
possibly accompanied by their death. In staunch contrast to any rebellion, Dr. King advocated and
led a revolt of peace against segregation of blacks and whites, specifically in the American south. In
the troubled American civil rights era, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. conveyed to the world that when
one recognizes unjust law based on moral conscience, resists peacefully, and replaces it with love
and just moral law, their civil disobedience results in a better society. Every human with a pulse,

King, without pause, preached for the necessity of peace during his marches and other statements
against racial injustice. Without peace, he was leading rioters. A statement was made with the
mighty combination of steadfast physical presence in addition to peace. This was perhaps the most
virtuous response to the deplorable deeds done to blacks in that time. Consider it, a child could not
attend his or her local school because of his or her skin color. Or a man cannot purchase, a cup of
coffee from a diner due to his skin's darker hue. After all this, the advocated response was peace.
There is nothing more positive than the ends of the movement, despite that it was civil disobedience.
Do not let the reality of consequences for one's actions escape the history that was created. Dr. King
and his followers stood up and received the repercussions of their actions in peace. Also, do not
forget that Dr. King wrote his historical letter from jail. Echoing St. Augustine, King stated that "an

Throughout history there has always been testimony of the consciousness of injustice, and homage
paid those individuals who are cognizant and inquisitive enough to challenge those injustices. Most
often these injustices survive due to society's unwillingness to go against the grain, the lack of
knowledge, the lack of the pursuit of knowledge, and fear of the repercussions of challenging such
injustices. Frequently, those individuals recognized in history are those who evoked change with a
pure heart, perseverance, determination, passion, and demonstrate selflessness by cultivating entire

65. King Jr Metaphors
On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights activist, delivered his renowned speech, "I
Have a Dream" on the Lincoln Memorial located in Washington to millions of Americans. King
relied on the use of metaphors, imagery, and anaphora to establish pathos; as well as to convey his
wish to live in a country where everyone has equal civil and economic rights no matter their skin
color.
King employs many metaphors throughout his speech to disclose emotions that can only be
represented by comparing two things. The most notable example is in the beginning of his speech
where he compares the lack of justice to a "check with insufficient funds." By doing this, King
makes his audience acknowledge that the African American population has been deprived of its
freedom. This example correlates with the rest of his speech speaking on how African Americans are
treated as less than human even after being granted their freedom in 1865. To fully understand why
he compares these two things the audience will need to know information regarding the 13th, 14th,
and 15th amendments and how they were supposed to give African American slaves equal rights.
This metaphor makes the audience recognize that African Americans ... Show more content on

As Reverend "Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr". showed us in his life's work to end racism, we can act to

we can take to end the violence of racism are equal, speak up, and education. Martin Luther King Jr.
wants us to speak up for each other. "We must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force
with soul force." The first way we can end violence and racism is equality. Equality is where the
state and the community is being equal. In this case it is not equal because of segregation and
racism. "Martin Luther King Jr". has a dream that one day the world would be equal. He said that it

69. The Influence Of Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Makes an Influence African–Americans have struggled to fight for their
equality for hundreds of years. There had been many attempts to make a change for this minority
group, but one of the major leaders involved was Martin Luther King Jr. He was consistent in
fighting for racial equality through non–violent actions, even though he had experienced violence
and harassment. His consistency, determination, and different approach to the problem caused
massive influence that helped African–Americans to be equal to those around them. Martin Luther
King Jr. had become involved early on and was very active in the fight for African–American civil
rights. The first action taken to eliminate segregation was on the busses in Montgomery, Alabama–
where King led the boycott. As seen in the Hollander (1971) study, the minorities who had the most
influence were the ones who followed along early. This explains why King was so influential. He
supported this movement from the very beginning and was consistent in doing so as the movement
grew into other areas. He had contributed greatly in leading events of the Civil Rights Movement
and sacrificed many things to do so. For example, he was arrested a total of 30 times for the events
he was involved in (Martin Luther, 2017). He led his followers through many scenarios which

When people think of great leaders there is only one that comes to mind and that is the great leader

spent in Birmingham jail had solidified him as a leader who never gave up on the cause. One of the
many good qualities of a leader is never giving up no matter how many times you fall. King showed
just that, it was not his first time being incarcerated but his 13th time (4). The civil rights leader was
at a protest in Birmingham, Alabama when he was arrested for having a public gathering without a
permit. When King was arrested he was thrown into solitary confinement without access to a lawyer
or contact with his wife. Shortly after his arrest he had received letters from local Christians
criticizing King. The responses to those people are greatly known today as "Letters from
Birmingham Jail". In the response letters he showed great intelligence, sense of justice, and love
towards the people against him. He wrote the response letters without any resources, since he was in
jail, and yet wrote the letters with such elegance. Martin Luther King Jr. had perfectly quoted great
religious philosopher from memory and made an impact to the nation. The civil rights activist was
not just writing a letter to the people who wrote to him but to the entire country. According to King's
"Letters from Birmingham Jail" he states, "So the question is not whether we will be extremist but

In addition, from equality, he did much more. The most difficult part of
his goal was doing it

75. Martin Luther King Jr. And Gandhi
There are many people who believe in a philosophy of nonviolence, while others not so much. Two
people who have transposed the civil movement of the world dramatically through the philosophy of
nonviolence are Martin Luther King Jr. and Mohandas K. Gandhi. While there are many pros to
nonviolence, there are just as many cons. Somehow these two people managed to impact millions of
people's lives and still continue to do so today. Through all of the negativity and discrimination
these two people became leaders in our society's eyes and still remain as role models in our society

people. "What is the philosophy of nonviolence?" According to Nonviolence on the Peace Pledge

a philosophy, a principle, and a practice. As an ethical philosophy, it upholds the view that moral
behaviour excludes the use of violence; as a political philosophy it maintains that violence is self–
perpetuating and can never provide a means to a securely peaceful end. As a principle, it supports
the pacifist position that war and killing are never justifiable. As a practice it has been used by
pacifists and non–pacifists alike to achieve social change and express resistance to oppression.
