Martin Luther King Jr. is accepted by many as the most influential figure in the civil rights
movement. In his protests, participants would refuse unjust laws and disrupt everyday life by
marching or sitting in squares, spreading awareness of their concerns. The marches in particular
were highly effective, garnering massive news coverage and sympathy for the protestors. In order to
grow and maintain the sympathy generated by this coverage, King also advocated a strict non–
violence policy. His methods played a key role in desegregating cities throughout the South,
including Birmingham, as well as in the passing of the voting rights act. This strategy for protest is
still widely used today, namely in large parts of the Black Lives Matter movement. King's style of
peaceful civil disobedience is highly effective, allowing enough disobedience to gain attention,
while avoiding violence to maintain sympathy and discussion.
One of the key components of King's movement was the usage of civil disobedience. King
advocated the breakage of segregation laws, in addition to any other unjust law. He states that "one
has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. I would agree with St. Augustine that 'an unjust
law is no law at all'" (Howard–Pitney, 79). King supported the breakage of these laws to draw
attention to their unfairness. He states "I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience

Martin Luther King Jr had a global goal to end racism and segregation. In the I Have a Dream
speech by Martin Luther King Jr, the speech was given on August 28th, 1963 in front of countless

diction, imagery, and similes to demand that America needs to change the social norms that have

story, and we tend to forget about the other people who were involved. I might be a little bit bias, but
from being a history major and actually studying history a lot of things slip through the cracks, when

his goal was doing it
peacefully. He and his followers took a lot of punishment; not only mental ‎
and emotional torture,

There are many people who believe in a philosophy of nonviolence, while others not so much. Two
people who have transposed the civil movement of the world dramatically through the philosophy of
nonviolence are Martin Luther King Jr. and Mohandas K. Gandhi. While there are many pros to
nonviolence, there are just as many cons. Somehow these two people managed to impact millions of
people's lives and still continue to do so today. Through all of the negativity and discrimination
