Catholic Education Research Paper
I cannot describe what Catholic Education means to me currently without recalling what it once
meant to me. Catholic Education meant different things to me at different stages of my life. From
kindergarten to around grade 5, Catholic Education was just education. I knew public schools
existed. I understood that Catholic schools engaged students in the Catholic faith. Like my peers I
would pray, listen during religion lessons, and sit cross–legged on the gymnasium floor, cramped
together with 500 other students. The masses meant nothing to me. (They really just meant
discomfort because my legs would always fall asleep.) I listened to most lessons passively all the
time, and religion lessons were no exception. Prayers were only memorized ... Show more content

I came to conclusions about my faith and Catholic Education. Catholic Education still does not
mean much to me. However, it brings together people who (most of the time) come from a
Catholic/Christian backgrounds, and creates a sense of community. For that I appreciate Catholic
Education. What I do not find as nice about Catholic schools is that despite being centred around
religion, people in Catholic schools can be just as mean–spirited, rude, and uncompassionate as
people in public schools, if not worse. I am aware that it is unrealistic to assume that those in
Catholic schools are all wonderful people, but I find reality ironic. In my opinion, Catholic
Education is like public education, except Catholic students have school masses and are obligated to
take religion courses. As I introduced previously, being subject to Catholic Education and those
devoutly religious for the better part of 13 years has guided me to my brand of Catholicism so to
speak. Catholic Education has inadvertently, or possibly intentionally, started me off on my own
spiritual path by showing me what I do not like about Catholicism (eg. the belief that not going to
church is bad). Spirituality and personal religious beliefs are lifelong works in progress, and I
suppose that without Catholic Education my progress would have started later in my

Disparate Faith Traditions
The various differences of doctrine and dogma between faith traditions are often a stumbling block
for non–believers, causing them to wonder how it can be said that any one religion has is correct if
there are such a plethora of them. This essay has hopefully alleviated that stumbling block to some
degree, although no written work will ever have the capacity to remove it entirely. It has been shown
that despite the immensely different beliefs that are held by the Buddhist and Catholic traditions,
there is a surprisingly large amount of common ground in the realm of practice. While Catholics
believe in a supremely good, powerful, and knowledgeable God, Buddhists have varying beliefs
about divinity. While Buddhists firmly assert that there is no real, inner "self" within each
individual, Catholics believe in an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This essay is far from exhaustive in the realm of shared practices between the faiths. If this
inexplicable agreement is not enough to reassure those who are experiencing doubt that there must
be some underlying truth that has led these disparate faith traditions to such similar conclusions
about practice, then there is nothing that will reassure such doubt. In addition to those doubting that
there can be any discernable or trustworthy truth found in religions, this notable set of points of
agreement should serve to reassure the adherents of both faith traditions. Just as in common speech
it is reassuring to hear that someone agrees with you after they have put significant thought into the
topic at hand, it should be reassuring to Catholics and Buddhists to know that each faith tradition
supports at least some considerable number of the other tradition's

The Catholic Faith
Paper #2 The Catholic faith is based on this central figure, Jesus, who teaches them how to live in a
manner according to the ultimate creator: God. There are ways to view Jesus in the modern day
through different means of interaction. One way of interaction with Jesus is achieved when people
attend church on Sundays to ensure that they are live according to God through their daily activities.
Another way Christians see interaction with Jesus is through Mary and the saints because Mary and
the saints are ideal examples of Jesus. These interactions are essential to the Catholic faith, but the
most important "reappearance" of Jesus is through the Sacraments. Essentially, the Sacraments are a
way of getting inside of the Bible by committing to the same actions that Jesus performed in the
Bible. By conducting the sacraments, a person is considered to be transformed by doing the same
things Jesus did. The reappearance of Jesus is best viewed through the Sacraments, more
specifically in An Introduction to Catholicism through the explanation of the concept of
sacramentality, which encompasses baptism, confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist. In order to grasp
an understanding of the Sacraments, a person must first understand the concept of sacramentality.
According to Lawrence Cunningham, the word sacrament "mean[s] a visible sign of divine power
manifested in humanity" (Cunningham, pg.101). This concept of divine power portrayed in
humanity can be understood as a public sign that

God Vs Atheism Argument
The video, God vs. Atheism: Which is more rational, doesn't make sense to me. It starts by saying
faith's a belief in God, but towards the end it says God doesn't require faith. If Faith is a belief in
God, how does God not require faith? It says Atheism requires faith but Atheists don't believe in
God. How would Atheists have a belief in God, Faith? It says faith and reason are opposites which I
agree with but I feel God has to do with faith and Atheists think they are being reasonable because
they feel science has proved God impossible, but just like the video said, the belief in God is far
more rational than Atheism. Logic can show there's a God. Nothing can come from nothing. Things
move and we know something must cause that movement. Catholics believe God is the unmoved
mover. Just because you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this, it says things don't happen by chance and most natural things lack knowledge. There are four
ways atheists go at explaining this It had to be this way, it's only a coincidence, it just happened to
be this way, and winning the cosmic lottery, but it's easy to prove this wrong because our proof
states nothing happens by chance and these examples would all be chance. To say something
happened by luck or chance honestly just sounds uneducated to me. This being said, the scenario
that best goes with our proof is You are at a coffee shop after class discussing the Big Bang Theory
for an upcoming test and another student asks: "If the Big Bang caused the universe, why would
Christians believe in a God causing the universe? Moreover, if God caused it, who/what caused
God?" Belief in God is reasonable. The Atheists don't think God's realistic because Catholic believe
God was the beginning, the one who created everything, but science says the Big Bang was. Atheists
also feel someone had to have created God. The world's 13.7 billion years old, but God is 2018
years old. Therefore, God didn't create or come with the Big

Sacraments As A Critical Part Of The Catholic Faith
Sacraments Sacraments are a critical part of the foundation of the catholic faith, but where did the
sacraments originate? Our faith comes from the preachings of Jesus but he never specifically
described the sacraments and how to perform them. There are seven sacraments in the catholic
church and three initiation sacraments, which must be completed in order to be a full member of the
church. These sacraments when completed together allow you t become one in God, but where do
the sacraments draw their power and how?
The first recorded baptism was performed by John the Baptist. John the Baptist is Jesus' cousin and
was deemed the "preparer" for his cousin. John was called to prepare for the coming of the lord and
the 'kingdom of God' as well warn people for their ultimate judgement. John called on his followers
to repent and make ready their hearts for the Lord, this was accomplished through baptism. John
would immerse his follower in the river Jordan; however, in order for the sacrament to have validity
multiple essential things must first be accomplished. John's followers must have complete faith in
his message of the Messiah; they must also recognize that this was a sacrament of repentance that
must lead to change. Confession was also a necessary part of John's baptism and ultimately
repentance and the forgiveness of sin. Through this process, one is able to be renewed in the Lord
and be prepared for the arrival of the Messiah and their final judgement. "For by one

Roman Catholic Faith Affected My Life
There are currently more than one billion Roman Catholic citizens on the planet right now. I
consider myself immensely fortunate to be a part of such an extensive community of people that are
together because of God. Being Catholic has opened doors for me to see the world differently than if
I wasn't Catholic. My entire life would be mismatched if I wasn't Catholic. My faith affects many
aspects of my life such as my actions and decisions. The school that I go to, the friends that I have
made, and what I do on Sunday are all affected by the fact that I practice the Roman Catholic faith.
Being Catholic has had a positive influence on how I live my life and how I survey the world. Being
Catholic has made just about every part of my life different. The schools that I have gone to since
first grade have been Catholic schools. The friends that I have made are because I am Catholic, and I
also go to church almost every Sunday. The impact that my faith has had on my life is not
comprehensible. Activities like praying to God and asking him for help has just become second
nature because of how often I do it. In a single school day I participate in at least four different
prayers. Some people look at a cross and just think of it as a shape, ... Show more content on

of Christ's crucifixion. I now know that I must be a disciple of Christ so that he did not sacrifice
himself for no reason. This is really imperative to how I live my life because the ultimate goal is to
be in unity with God in heaven. If I am not going to mass, serving others in my community, or

Faith and Politics Essay
Faith and Politics
Nowadays, more so than ever before, religion plays a significant role in American presidential
elections. As citizens, our job is to examine that role and decide how it will affect our vote. The
Bush/Gore campaign has been very much influenced by religion. Joseph Lieberman, Gore's running
mate and the first Orthodox Jew to run for vice president on a major party ticket, has been extremely
vocal about his faith. Both George W. Bush and Al Gore, a Methodist and Baptist, respectively, have
also referred to their religious beliefs during this presidential campaign ("Anti–Defamation League
Criticizes"), raising several questions about the part religious faith plays in presidential elections.

And now we think Senator Lieberman crossed it" (Pellegrini). The ADL is concerned partly because
of the possibility that Lieberman's comments will rouse anti–Semitism in the American public. The
Pew Research Poll found that of those bothered by the merging of religion and politics, 49 percent
supported Lieberman and 30 percent did not. The statistics were virtually the same among those
who reported they were not concerned with politicians discussing religion. These results show that,
so far, there doesn't appear to be any hostility against Lieberman. Examining the bigger picture, the
poll found that about three quarters of the American public have a positive view of Jews (Lester).
This means that while the public isn't annoyed because he's Jewish and referring to his faith; but
perhaps his references to his faith may be negatively pinned to his being Jewish–changing our
perception of Jews. The Anti–Defamation League is also concerned with the (not–so– popular)
principle of separation of church and state. "We do not think that religion belongs in the political
campaign and political arena," Foxman declared to The New York Times. "There's nothing wrong
with somebody professing their faith and going to church or synagogue, but this is almost hawking
it" (Pellegrini). In response to Foxman's warning, Lieberman's spokesperson Kiki McLean reports

mountain, and they were essential to the survival of the men. The Catholic faith, along with prayer,
can lead a person to do marvelous things. The survivors of the crash in the Andes Mountains were
extraordinary examples of this. All of the young men had grown up in Catholic families, and they
had received a Catholic education. Because of their strong faith, their relationship with God became
a crucial part of their decision making and survival on the mountain. Prayer would reassure them

When on the expedition, Canessa and Parrado found faith essential to their journey. Those back on
the mountain also needed prayer to get through the endless nights and painful days. Without God the
men would have found no reason to stay alive. Faith and trust in God played an enormous role in the
decision making of the survivors. The young men on the mountain never left God out of an
important decision regarding the good of the group. From a young age, the men had learned the
Catholic faith. Their families raised them to be Catholic, and they all attended Catholic school. At
home, their faith was very important to them, and it became even more essential to them on the
mountain. They could not make an important decision without first deciding if it coincided with
their beliefs. The most prevalent example of this is when they were deciding if they should eat the
dead. Roberto Canessa made the argument that it was their moral obligation to stay alive. Their life

The Definition Of Interfaith Marriage As A System Of...
According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary (2004), the prefix "inter" means "between, among,
together" or "involving two or more." It also says that the word "faith" means "strong belief or trust
in someone or something", "belief in the existence of God", or "a system of religious beliefs." In the
instance of the term "interfaith", we can put the two definitions together and say that interfaith is
involving two or more systems of religious beliefs, or an existence of God. The dictionary defines
"marriage" as "the relationship that exists between a husband and wife." So, putting the words
"interfaith" and "marriage" together would ultimately mean that the man and wife have two different
religious belief systems. Turner and West's (2006) book, Perspectives on Family Communication,
defines interfaith marriage as "unions that include at least two different religious identities." That is
the definition of interfaith marriage in its simplest form, but an interfaith marriage is far more
complex than just its meaning. To me, and also many others across the globe, interfaith marriage is a
relationship that needs special commitment and attention, and now, I will attempt to show you why.
Religion has always been known for impacting marriage quality and satisfaction (see, for example,
Hood et. al.,1996), who also explain that "a major reason for shifting from one religious body to
another occurs when people of different faiths marry." Knowing that marriage is often the reason

Research Paper On Catholic Faith
Criterion A: Rationale and Preliminary Research
The biggest living figure in the Catholic Faith is the Pope, who leads us everyday by spreading and
giving God's word. The Pope brings us closer to God in many different spiritual ways. The topic I
have chosen to pursue is, how someone can become the Pope. One of the main reasons I have
chosen this topic is because I am a very dedicated catholic and have been practicing my religion
since I could ever remember. Our current Pope right now is a inspiration to me and it really makes
me interested in what it takes to become Pope because when I listen to him speak I can see how
confident he is and how much courage he has, and that is what strong leaders are made of. My main

There are about 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide that make up almost sixteen percent of the total
world Population. (BBC News) That is a tremendous amount of people. The Pope rules over all of
those people in the organization known as " The Catholic Church." Becoming Pope is no simple task
by any means. Even when it seems that someone is very close to becoming the next Pope, the
percentage of them actually becoming Pope is very slim. In fact, just the odds of becoming Pope of
someone is a cardinal is less then one percent, and you must become a cardinal to be elected Pope.
The odds are not in anybody' favor as they are 1,000 to 1(Kristi Barlette, Times Union, 12 Feb,
2013). Although. There are few steps to becoming Pope; each step is a long, difficult practice. First,
a person must be a male and he must eventually become Catholic. The next step is to get an
education, for religious studies and other academic subjects as well. Then, the person must become a
priest. He must do a good job in his parish and connect with the community. After the person has
spent some time and earned a great deal of respect from other people, he will be addressed as
"Monsignor". He will then be put in for a promotion where he will prove if he is worthy to continue
to the next step of the process, becoming a Bishop. The Bishop will continue to do exceptional

Why Religion And Spirituality?
Theme One: Why religion and spirituality?
The first theme that I have identified as significant in my spiritual journey is 'Why religion and
spirituality?' To me this theme encompasses and seeks to illuminate the burning desire that human
beings have to find answers to questions that give meaning to their life. The main premise of
Mackay's book is about the people's desire for a life of meaning, be that with, or without the
traditional institutionalized idea of God. In the first chapter Mackay discusses that humans are
innately built to search for answers and that we seek to understand the world around us and reasons
for our own existence. Mackey suggests that in some part, religion, and spirituality, is a way to fulfil
our own burning desire to answer these questions. However, as human knowledge and
understanding continue to develop and provide technology that is able to gather data in order to
make hypothesis and in some instances provide evidence based answers for some questions, our
reliance on religion for these answers seems to be waning. However, Mackay indicates that religion
will continue to prosper due to key factors, among others, Mackay mentions a human's needs to
believe and their need to belong. This theme highlighted the significance that faith and a sense of
belonging have in our society. Through reading Beyond Belief, I was drawn to reflect on the impact
of faith in my personal life, and a yearning to belonging in my professional life.

Comparing the Mormon Religion to Catholic and Protestant Faiths
The Mormon religion is very unique in many of its doctrine. While technically a Protestant faith, the
Mormons generally share more doctrine with the Catholics. Because of its unique nature, I will be
analyzing the Mormon faith, its history, organization, and doctrine, in comparison with the beliefs
held by both Catholics and Protestants.
Establishment
On April 6, 1980, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints (aka the Mormon Church) was
founded. [It is interesting to note that according to Mormon doctrine (Doctrine and Covenants 20:1),
April 6 is the birthday of Jesus Christ.] 10 years prior to this event, in 1820, fourteen–year–old

Both Martin Luther and John Wesley shared the belief that Catholic faith had strayed from the truth
as is seen in their respective quotes: "I have sought nothing beyond reforming the Church in
conformity with the Holy Scriptures. . . . . . . I simply say that Christianity has ceased to exist among
those who should have preserved it." (Luther and His Times, E.G. Schweibert) and "It does not
appear that these extraordinary gifts of the Holy Ghost were common in the Church for more than
two or three centuries. We seldom hear of them after that fatal period when the
Emperor Constantine called himself a Christian; . . . From this time they almost totally ceased; . . .
The Christians had no more of the Spirit of Christ than the other Heathens . . . . This was the real
cause why the extraordinary gifts of the Holy Ghost were no longer to be found in the Christian
Church; because the Christians were turned Heathens again, and had only a dead form left." (The
Works of John Wesley, vol. 7)
While the Mormons agree with other Protestants that the Catholic Church had become corrupt with
its "indulgences", purchase of church offices, etc., the Mormons differed somewhat in their solution
to this problem. The Protestants sought to reform the problems they saw evident in the Catholic
faith. The Mormons, however, believing that all faiths upon the Earth had fallen away from the true
church established by Christ, sought to restore

Elements Of Catholicism And Voodoo
A religion can be defined as a system of belief that manifest, to some degree, the following eight
elements: belief system, community, central myths, ritual, ethics, characteristic emotional
experience, material expression, and sacredness. Depending on the religion, some of these elements
may carry more weight than others. I will look at Catholicism and Voodoo and the role some of
these elements play within these systems of belief.
Catholicism is a monotheistic religion believing that God is the Creator of all that is. We must love
and serve God in our daily life, through prayer and good works, in order to achieve salvation. The
element of central myths plays a large role within the Catholic faith, as the Bible is the core of

Eucharist is when we receive the body and blood of Christ through the symbols of bread and wine.
It further extends the initiation that took place at baptism "to enter fully into the heart of Christian
faith through participation in the Eucharist" (catholic.org,2017). Confirmation is the final step of
initiation. It is receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit that unites us more firmly with Christ and
strengthens our bond with the Church. The remaining four Sacraments guide us through the rest of
our life. The Sacrament of Penance is received regularly to confess our sins and seek forgiveness so
that we may remain in God's grace. The Sacrament of Marriage takes place when two people
commit to spend the rest of their life together, anointing of the sick is when a priest anoints a sick
person with oil and offers prayers, and Holy Orders is the sacrament that takes place with the
ordination of a bishop, priest, or deacon into ministry (Molloy, M., 2010).
Voodoo is also a monotheistic religion that combines Catholic and African beliefs and is often
surrounded by many misconceptions. Voodoo has been portrayed by the media as a form of devil
worship and curses, with Voodoo dolls being used to inflict pain on one's enemies (ancient–
origins.net). It is practiced primarily in Haiti, New Orleans, and the Caribbean. This religion is
several hundred years old, dating back to when African slaves were brought to America from Haiti.

Communion) When it came time for the communion, a very different sequence occurred than the
one to which I had become so accustomed. The bread and wine were administered to the
congregation, not by forming a line towards the priest, but by having select people administer both a
small helping of something bread and a small cup of "wine", or grape juice. The idea behind this
was that, only when every member of the service held the bread and wine, did they, as a group,
receive the communion together. Observing this allowed me to re–evaluate the process familiar to
me all my life: does it not make sense to receive the communion as a community? Though this
process is not too far off from our own practices, I still found it to be a rather interesting
understanding and practice of what is meant behind the communion of Christ. Community) Unlike
the solemn, reserved attitude of a Catholic entering his pew for an early morning mass, the
atmosphere of this church when I first entered the building was full of life. I looked around and saw

Does Diversity Promote Religious Tolerance?
I believe that it is a good incentive to teach and learn about all the different religions, cultures, and
faiths that are practiced all around the world. It not only expand one's knowledge about other
ideologies, but moreover prevents people from categorizing, and labeling an individual with another
faith. We have seen this phenomenon occur in the Sikh community after 9/11, simply because
people are ignorant, and do not have any knowledge about other faiths. Now the question is, does
understanding religious diversity promote religious tolerance? In my opinion, everyone around the

fit for our modernized world today? The global community, which includes countries like the US,

Church Father St. Augustine (d. 430) taught that children who die without baptism go to hell. This
statement was later softened to say that children who die, without baptism, go to a quasi–heaven
called limbo. In the Catholic religion the bishop, priest or deacon are called upon to perform
baptisms. In case of necessity, anyone, even a non–baptized person, with the required intention, can
baptize by using the Trinitarian baptismal formula phrase "in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit", or words to that form and effect, referring to the three persons of the
Christian Trinity. It is often followed by an "Amen". Mormons believe infant baptism is
unnecessary. Unbaptized children are saved through the power of Christ's atonement (Moroni 8:12).
The Lord said, "They cannot sin, for power is not given unto Satan to tempt little children, until they
begin to become accountable before me" (D&C 29:46–47). They are not to be baptized until they
reach the age of accountability, which

Catholic Faith In Schools
Demonstrate a commitment to the ethos of the catholic faith and mission of the school I believe it is
important to create an environment that children feel safe and comfortable to take risks with their
learning. The catholic faith helps to create this type of inclusive classroom when reinforced
throughout all curriculum areas and interactions with the students. When this is achieved, children
will be able to develop into the best version of themselves. In order to create a safe classroom, I
would be accepting of different cultures and beliefs of the students in my classroom. I would do this
by including their beliefs in discussions about faith and spirituality. Students could better connect
the catholic faith to their own lives which will enable them to have meaningful understandings. This
would allow other students to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I will actively be spreading the word of the bible through good deeds in the community. I have been
an active blood donor for several years now and understand the importance of supporting those
people in the community who need help like the sick. I have also been a part of different volunteer
programs in the community. Growing up in a small rural community, my family was actively
involved as volunteer firefighters. This involved supporting other farming families with paddock
burn offs and more serious issues like attending out of control bushfires which I never had to
experience. Since beginning my teaching degree, I have been a part of a local playgroup program
which allowed different families to come together and connect. The children were the focus of the
initiative as the program allowed social interaction, gross motor development and oral
communication to name a few. It also allowed the parents to talk to educators in a relaxed setting
about issues about their children they might not feel comfortable discussing

How My Faith Changed My Life
"Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and
steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations"
(Deuteronomy 7:9). Through all generations of my family leading up to today, my family, on my
mother and father's sides, all practice the same faith. All of my family is Catholic, most of my
friends growing up were catholic, and everywhere I looked, my faith was an important part of my
life. I went to private school for nine years; the same one many of my cousins and my siblings
attended. All of the people around me when I was a child prayed and worshiped like I was taught to
do. They were the ones that influenced me to go deeper into my faith. Through the daily religion
classes and weekly masses, to the teachers and priest that influenced my morals and values, I look
back on those days as times I cherish. I had learned to open my heart and let others in to take a part
in my life. I set boundaries for myself to be a respectful person and keep my faith. And most
importantly, I am a life worth living as we are all made from the same image of God. Private school
is the reason I am the person I have grown to be today and I will become tomorrow.
In the beginning of my personal journey, I had to learn to open up to the world around me and
accept everyone for who they were and what they believe in. My limits have been tested over the
years with people I thought were closest to me. With constant

Character Analysis Of Jack Streicher
For Jack Streicher, religion has always been a dominant force in his life. The eldest of three, raised
in a traditional Catholic environment in Cincinnati, religion, family, and school have always been
intertwined. He attended a Catholic high school and wanted to attend a Catholic college as well.
Religion has been constant for him; he described moments where it was hard for him to have faith,
but he never lost sight of the bigger picture and believes that God has a plan and will take care of us.
He is deeply connected with religion as an ethical call to go beyond the self. Religion, from his point
of view, is selfless. He hopes to used his religion to help others, which in turns helps him grow
spiritually and develop a strong character. For some, religion is going to church and practicing the
ceremony of worshiping with others. Jack, on the other hand, does not find meaning in the
ceremony of religion, but the practice outside of the church. When describing his religion, he stated,
"the order of mass does not do much for me, I find meaning in going out and making connections
with others." For him, practicing faith is going out of his way to make everyone feel welcomed and
comfortable, establishing his religion as a prominent aspect of his overall personality. Because Jack
does not see the importance of the order of religion, he has no particular place of event attached to
his religion; Jack's religion is on a much more personal level. His religion is an inward force

The Relationship Between Faith And Reason In The Catholic...
Faith and Reason have long been a topic of discussion in the Catholic Church. Some might say that
faith and reason contradict each other, but the Catholic church disagrees. In the Catechism of the
Catholic church it states,"Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy
between faith and reason. Since the same God who reveals mysteries and infuses faith has bestowed
the light of reason on the human mind, God cannot deny himself, nor can truth ever contradict
truth."37 Consequently, methodical research in all branches of knowledge provided it is carried out
in a truly scientific manner and does not override moral laws, can never conflict with the faith,
because the things of the world and the things of faith derive from the same God. The humble and
persevering investigator of the secrets of nature is being led, as it were, by the hand of God in spite
of himself, for it is God, the conserver of all things, who made them what they are"(CCC 159).The
Catholic church teaches that reason is a gift from God, and therefore, all things researched are done
through because he is the one who has created the person doing the reasoning. God wants us to use
our minds in ways that honor him, and the Catholic church continues to reinforce that this idea of
faith and reasoning go together, hand–in–hand. Faith is having the faith in the system of reason that
is used to infer answers from the Bible. The church teaches that there can never be a big difference

Religious Freedom And Toleration In Maryland Essay
The history of Maryland is closely related to religious freedom and toleration. Many of the first
Europeans to arrive in Maryland did so in order to escape religious persecution in England.
Maryland thus came to be considered the birthplace of religious freedom in America. However,
residents of Maryland, along with many people throughout the world, continue to face challenges to
religious freedom. Since the early settlers of this area were motivated by religious freedom and
toleration, Maryland has grown into a center of religious activity in which issues and challenges
regarding religion remain important to the people of Maryland today. Throughout many historical
periods, persecution of minority religions reigned prominently in England. The Catholics are one
such group to experience oppression by the English sporadically throughout European history. The
first wave of Catholic persecution occurred when King Henry VIII declared himself head of the
Church of England in 1534. He accomplished this via the Act of Supremacy, which made any
allegiance to the Pope legally treasonous. The act was later repealed by Henry's daughter, Queen
Mary I, making Catholicism the state religion in England once more. However such a respite for
Catholics would not last. The Act of Supremacy was reinstated under Queen Elizabeth I, ... Show

The most common form of this oppression is manifested in restrictions on public religious
expression. All across America, religious organizations and individuals are being exposed to
growing limitations on their free practice of religion and freedom of speech. Religious individuals

arena. At public universities across the country, as well as at public elementary, middle, and high

Confused Congregation By William Shakespeare
Confused Congregation During Shakespeare's time, the Protestant religion was required to be
followed by law. This protestant religion provided the view to its followers that their lives were
controlled by a predestined fate. The people were totally helpless in their movements in their lives
who already had a path laid out in front of them and they could do nothing to divert the path. This
truth of the protestant movement was in a constant rivalry with the opposing view of Catholicism.
The catholic view and belief is that the path of life is freely chosen not dependent or controlled by
some force or fate. This struggle and this confusion with which religion, with its two opposing
factors of fate versus free will along with their contrasting ornate and historic ceremony and
traditions, is seen and demonstrated in all its glory by the characters and plot in many of
Shakespeare's plays. This confusion, due to the flip–flopping of religions and the nostalgia involved
as one religion is replaced with another in a seemingly unending cycle during Shakespeare's time,
creates the hodgepodge religious backdrop for his plays. The struggle of religion was real during
Shakespeare's time. The constant back and forth of the protestant and catholic views stemmed
straight from the top. The monarch of England was calling the shots of which religion was best for
England based on the monarch's own advantages or disadvantages of each religion. Queen Mary I
(1553) believed in Catholicism and

Personal Narrative: My Religious Inheritance In A Family
Religious inheritance can be explained as the passing down of religious beliefs (or lack thereof) and
customs through a family line. In some cases, religious beliefs and traditions in a family will be
rejected, but in many cases, children take on the religious background of their family members. This
particular situation with religious inheritance has been the case for me on my own personal faith
journey.
I was born into a family of Catholic background, it was not very strong at first, but as I grew older
my parents became deeply involved in their faith and I did as well. My religious inheritance has,
quite blatantly, made me the person I am today. My moral compass is shaped around the teachings
of the Catholic Church and my everyday attitude

Personal Narrative: Matters Of Faith
Matters of Faith offers music, a message and sometimes a guest speaker. It is a place for many
people to come together and hear not only about their own religion but to hear about other religions
as well. These are the reasons that intrigued me to see what Matters of Faith was really all about.
I chose to attend Matters of Faith for many reasons. One reason being that I was curious to know
what it was and what they did during the meetings. As a commuter, I feel it is hard to find events
that I am able to attend, and this happens to fit into my schedule perfectly. In addition, I am a
religious person and I really wanted to get involved with something on campus that pertained to my

There were only a few people there and I felt a bit awkward mostly because I went in not knowing
what to expect or what I was walking into which made me nervous. In the first meeting that I
attended, we began by listening to someone play the piano and sing Sam Smith's "Stay with Me."
Then we discussed and talked about how we could relate the song to God and our relationship with
him. We then went on to read a devotional that concerned depression and we talked a bit about how
people in our lives or ourselves have struggled with that. At the end of the meeting, we had a quick
group prayer. The following week I decided to attend again. That meeting's theme was domestic
violence. We talked about how to get involved and where we can go if ourselves or someone we
know is involved with domestic violence. Through these meetings, I got to hear about other
students' lives and about some of their views. These meetings helped me get to know some of the
people on campus.
After the events were over, I felt like I made a good choice by attending because it helped me get
out of my comfort zone. I did not attend with other people but I did feel I made a friend or two in the
group. One person even offered to go with me to other Catholic events if that was something I was

Paschal Mystery : Central And Catholic Faith
Paschal Mystery is central to Catholic faith and fundamental to salvation theology. The Paschal
Mystery is most directly associated with the passion, death, resurrection, and glorification of Jesus
Christ. This research paper explores the meaning, effect, and working of the Paschal Mystery and
how the faithful actively participates in the Paschal Mystery today. Other Paschal Mystery themes
will be explored within the context of the New Testament to include: (1) life is greater than death,
(2) forgiveness is greater than sin and (3) light is greater than darkness.
Etymology of Paschal Mystery
"The word Paschal is the English adjectival of the Greek word pascha, which is derived from the
Hebrew word pesah (or pesach), which means passover" (St. Mary's Press, 1) see the pdf to get

slavery to freedom is celebrated and the Passover lamb is slain and eaten" (Harrington, 30).

Reflective Essay On Religious Literacy
In a world where information can be found at our finger tips, there is still a large deficit in
understanding when it comes to literacy. Although possessing the ability to read and write is
valuable, it is simply not enough. The truth of the matter is that having the ability to read and write
is worth nothing if one does not understand what he or she is reading and writing. As a result of my
childhood experiences, religious literacy is possessing a basic understanding of one's individual
religion, and having the capacity to internalize what certain teachings and beliefs means to them. In
a narrative of my literary experiences, these moments regarding religion shaped my capacity to read,
write, and comprehend. I simply want to share my Catholic faith. Not to convince you or to convert
you, but simply to share what the Catholic traditions and beliefs mean to me.
Sitting in a classroom filled with several maps of the world, vast spines of colorful books, and
watching the clock hit the next hour, there is nothing more that a seven–year–old would rather do
than be stuck sitting in a desk for eight hours of the day. Looking back to when I was young and
learning about the history and background of the church, I was illiterate. According to Bud
Heckman's definition, "religious literacy is the understanding of the profound role that religions
plays in human social, cultural, and political life in both contemporary and historical contexts" (2).

The Catholic Faith and Its Postive Outlook Upon the Loss of One's Physical Presence on Earth
In the face of one of the biggest fears known to man–death–the Catholic faith provides a positive
outlook upon the loss of ones physical presence on earth. Through the life and death of Jesus Christ
(the hypostatic union of son and Father,) a Christocentric theology resolves the mystery of death
through faith and grace. Gods only Sons death grants a Catholic Christian with an answer to the why
of death, resulting in a realistic, yet hopeful attitude toward the loss of the physical being, while
continuing to believe in the flourishing life of the spirit in a realm beyond our understanding.

A man made in the image of God who saved humanity through love and compassion. But these
views of Christ are also sharply contrasted with the historical Jesus, thus, through Borg's careful
analysis of the scriptures; he brings forth the concepts of a pre–Easter Jesus and post–Easter Christ.
Borg's attempt to research Jesus is a means to reveal His humanity, to bring forth the concept that
He was not always "all–good"; that He too had a temper, He too felt pain and sorrow, but at the
same time, He also had compassion and mercy. By doing so, through the careful analysis of
scripture, Borg brings Jesus' reality closer to our world; demonstrating that Christ was just as flawed
and human as us. This culminates itself as the final revelation of Gods love, by attempting to save us
through a human example of pure love and compassion. Borg carefully reads into scripture as an
oral tale that depicts certain aspects of the Jesus of faith, but at the same time, brings forth the Jesus
of history as a means of placing this ancient faith in perspective. By doing so Borg proves the
essence of the Catholic faith, proving the atheistic idea of an "illusionary–faith," to be wrong. This
analytical and educated revelation of Jesus adds a new dimension to the Catholic religion, which
brings us closer to our faith. The Gospels introduce the life of Christ, bringing forth the man, the
human being who shapes the Catholic Christian

The catholic faith encourages us to help out and give our time to our community. The catholic faith
also encourages us to follow God's mission. I gave my time at the Women's Health Clinic in
Hartford. I spent all five hours working on a pamphlet that they will put in the waiting room. Once I

me an opportunity to learn. Also the doctors do not need to waste their time making a pamphlet.
They have many other important tasks to focus on. I took away much more than I had expected. One
thing I took away was doctors have more jobs than just taking care of patients. The doctors have to
create pamphlets, but I stepped up to the job. I had lots of fun creating this pamphlet and would love

The Religious Impacts Of The First Great Awakening And The...
Both The First Great Awakening and The Enlightenment generated an instant trend in the revival of
religious influences. Started by Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield, the Great Awakening was
most commonly understood to have its greatest religious impact between the 1730s and 1740s.
American colonists had begun to become more devoted to various religions, which resulted in the
toleration of many of them. Another cause of this revival dated back to the late seventeenth and
early eighteenth centuries when a German movement, called Pietism, emphasized closely distinct
personal connections with God (Gullotta, 2016). This movement spread as a result British, German,
Scottish, Scotch–Irish immigration that then influenced British and Dutch religion (Gullotta, 2016).
As a consequence, American colonists had begun to become more devoted to various religions,
which resulted in the toleration of many of them.
One of the effects of The Great Awakening on the British North American colonists was the
religious rule. The ties between culture and politics through religious movements changed the norms
of the colonists. Other than immigrants from town to town the visitation of preachers caused an
emergence of opposition about the truth of the church and creation of new sects and Protestant
denominations. A few of the preachers who led these preaching tours included George Whitefield,
Theodore Jacob Frelinghugusen, James Davenport, Samuel Davis, and Gilbert Tennent (Gullotta,
2016).

"Whether we agree with religious people or their critics or simply don't know, the near–universal
appeal, the persistence and the transforming power of religions are intriguing," Portier once said.
People are always intrigued by religion. Even if people do not have a faith or religion, they are
intrigued about the power of religion and are searching for answers. Portier defined religion in terms
of life's "greatest questions." People are always questioning the supernatural. The definition of
religion relates to the Dead Man walking in many ways. The one way I am going to relate this to is
Joey. Before Sister Helen came into his life, he had no faith in God and didn't believe. Once Sister

downfall that Joey had was in the beginning he was not into questioning his religion at all and he did
not want to be forgiven for his mistakes. These examples showed a lack of participation in "religion"
according to the definition of the Catholic intellectual tradition that Portier

The Affordable Healthcare Act And The Catholic Faith
The Affordable Healthcare Act and the Catholic Faith
The healthcare system of the United States was established as a system of health and welfare
programs created to provide affordable treatment to the citizens of the United States. Recently, the
Affordable Health Care Act was passed changing the structure of the system (Mulvany, 2012).
While in theory the new arrangement works, it has its flaws due to the resulting cost, slowness, and
the government interfering with religious and personal beliefs. These problems have led many
people to question the role of the government in the life of the individual.
The Supreme Court 's favorable ruling on the Affordable Health Care Act allowed for healthcare to
be available for many Americans who would otherwise not receive medical benefits. This is because
it increases the number of people covered by Medicare/Medicaid, and lowers the cost of insurance
through employers. While this idea is good in theory, paying for it is a challenge due to the fact that
it will only add to the nation's already enormous debit of several trillion dollars (Mulvany, 2012).
From 2010–2019, the United States is predicted to spend around 400 billion dollars on healthcare.
This prediction has prompted lawmakers to reduce spending on Medicare, Medicaid and other
welfare programs. The spending cuts will result in less people getting the care they need due to the
limited availability of money for care and the increase in the number of beneficiaries receiving

It creates the basis of morals for many people.
Religion is a globally practiced phenomenon.
Especially in today's society, religion can be seen as a negative or a positive for the public.
Religion could play a substantial role in numerous people's lives and hardly any in others.
Despite this, everyone can benefit from religion.
Spirituality, an integral part of religion, promotes a vigorous lifestyle.
Having religion in one's life and a strong sense of spirituality is beneficial to an individual's health,

Catholic Education Research Paper

  • 1. Catholic Education Research Paper I cannot describe what Catholic Education means to me currently without recalling what it once meant to me. Catholic Education meant different things to me at different stages of my life. From kindergarten to around grade 5, Catholic Education was just education. I knew public schools existed. I understood that Catholic schools engaged students in the Catholic faith. Like my peers I would pray, listen during religion lessons, and sit cross–legged on the gymnasium floor, cramped together with 500 other students. The masses meant nothing to me. (They really just meant discomfort because my legs would always fall asleep.) I listened to most lessons passively all the time, and religion lessons were no exception. Prayers were only memorized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I came to conclusions about my faith and Catholic Education. Catholic Education still does not mean much to me. However, it brings together people who (most of the time) come from a Catholic/Christian backgrounds, and creates a sense of community. For that I appreciate Catholic Education. What I do not find as nice about Catholic schools is that despite being centred around religion, people in Catholic schools can be just as mean–spirited, rude, and uncompassionate as people in public schools, if not worse. I am aware that it is unrealistic to assume that those in Catholic schools are all wonderful people, but I find reality ironic. In my opinion, Catholic Education is like public education, except Catholic students have school masses and are obligated to take religion courses. As I introduced previously, being subject to Catholic Education and those devoutly religious for the better part of 13 years has guided me to my brand of Catholicism so to speak. Catholic Education has inadvertently, or possibly intentionally, started me off on my own spiritual path by showing me what I do not like about Catholicism (eg. the belief that not going to church is bad). Spirituality and personal religious beliefs are lifelong works in progress, and I suppose that without Catholic Education my progress would have started later in my ... • 3. Disparate Faith Traditions The various differences of doctrine and dogma between faith traditions are often a stumbling block for non–believers, causing them to wonder how it can be said that any one religion has is correct if there are such a plethora of them. This essay has hopefully alleviated that stumbling block to some degree, although no written work will ever have the capacity to remove it entirely. It has been shown that despite the immensely different beliefs that are held by the Buddhist and Catholic traditions, there is a surprisingly large amount of common ground in the realm of practice. While Catholics believe in a supremely good, powerful, and knowledgeable God, Buddhists have varying beliefs about divinity. While Buddhists firmly assert that there is no real, inner "self" within each individual, Catholics believe in an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This essay is far from exhaustive in the realm of shared practices between the faiths. If this inexplicable agreement is not enough to reassure those who are experiencing doubt that there must be some underlying truth that has led these disparate faith traditions to such similar conclusions about practice, then there is nothing that will reassure such doubt. In addition to those doubting that there can be any discernable or trustworthy truth found in religions, this notable set of points of agreement should serve to reassure the adherents of both faith traditions. Just as in common speech it is reassuring to hear that someone agrees with you after they have put significant thought into the topic at hand, it should be reassuring to Catholics and Buddhists to know that each faith tradition supports at least some considerable number of the other tradition's ... • 5. The Catholic Faith Paper #2 The Catholic faith is based on this central figure, Jesus, who teaches them how to live in a manner according to the ultimate creator: God. There are ways to view Jesus in the modern day through different means of interaction. One way of interaction with Jesus is achieved when people attend church on Sundays to ensure that they are live according to God through their daily activities. Another way Christians see interaction with Jesus is through Mary and the saints because Mary and the saints are ideal examples of Jesus. These interactions are essential to the Catholic faith, but the most important "reappearance" of Jesus is through the Sacraments. Essentially, the Sacraments are a way of getting inside of the Bible by committing to the same actions that Jesus performed in the Bible. By conducting the sacraments, a person is considered to be transformed by doing the same things Jesus did. The reappearance of Jesus is best viewed through the Sacraments, more specifically in An Introduction to Catholicism through the explanation of the concept of sacramentality, which encompasses baptism, confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist. In order to grasp an understanding of the Sacraments, a person must first understand the concept of sacramentality. According to Lawrence Cunningham, the word sacrament "mean[s] a visible sign of divine power manifested in humanity" (Cunningham, pg.101). This concept of divine power portrayed in humanity can be understood as a public sign that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. God Vs Atheism Argument The video, God vs. Atheism: Which is more rational, doesn't make sense to me. It starts by saying faith's a belief in God, but towards the end it says God doesn't require faith. If Faith is a belief in God, how does God not require faith? It says Atheism requires faith but Atheists don't believe in God. How would Atheists have a belief in God, Faith? It says faith and reason are opposites which I agree with but I feel God has to do with faith and Atheists think they are being reasonable because they feel science has proved God impossible, but just like the video said, the belief in God is far more rational than Atheism. Logic can show there's a God. Nothing can come from nothing. Things move and we know something must cause that movement. Catholics believe God is the unmoved mover. Just because you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this, it says things don't happen by chance and most natural things lack knowledge. There are four ways atheists go at explaining this It had to be this way, it's only a coincidence, it just happened to be this way, and winning the cosmic lottery, but it's easy to prove this wrong because our proof states nothing happens by chance and these examples would all be chance. To say something happened by luck or chance honestly just sounds uneducated to me. This being said, the scenario that best goes with our proof is You are at a coffee shop after class discussing the Big Bang Theory for an upcoming test and another student asks: "If the Big Bang caused the universe, why would Christians believe in a God causing the universe? Moreover, if God caused it, who/what caused God?" Belief in God is reasonable. The Atheists don't think God's realistic because Catholic believe God was the beginning, the one who created everything, but science says the Big Bang was. Atheists also feel someone had to have created God. The world's 13.7 billion years old, but God is 2018 years old. Therefore, God didn't create or come with the Big ... • 9. Sacraments As A Critical Part Of The Catholic Faith Sacraments Sacraments are a critical part of the foundation of the catholic faith, but where did the sacraments originate? Our faith comes from the preachings of Jesus but he never specifically described the sacraments and how to perform them. There are seven sacraments in the catholic church and three initiation sacraments, which must be completed in order to be a full member of the church. These sacraments when completed together allow you t become one in God, but where do the sacraments draw their power and how? The first recorded baptism was performed by John the Baptist. John the Baptist is Jesus' cousin and was deemed the "preparer" for his cousin. John was called to prepare for the coming of the lord and the 'kingdom of God' as well warn people for their ultimate judgement. John called on his followers to repent and make ready their hearts for the Lord, this was accomplished through baptism. John would immerse his follower in the river Jordan; however, in order for the sacrament to have validity multiple essential things must first be accomplished. John's followers must have complete faith in his message of the Messiah; they must also recognize that this was a sacrament of repentance that must lead to change. Confession was also a necessary part of John's baptism and ultimately repentance and the forgiveness of sin. Through this process, one is able to be renewed in the Lord and be prepared for the arrival of the Messiah and their final judgement. "For by one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Summary Of Faith Story: Catholic Students At John Brown Faith Story: Catholic Students at John Brown University Catholic students at John Brown University say that they do not feel represented as minority in the university, yet they enjoy learning and sharing their values and beliefs with other students. On the other side, Christian students are more tolerant and respectful when talking about religions. According to the results of an ethnography project carried out by Molly Devine, a senior in intercultural studies, there are only 30 Catholic students attending John Brown University this fall, and most of them at some point might have felt uncomfortable with taking communion in chapel. • 13. Roman Catholic Faith Affected My Life There are currently more than one billion Roman Catholic citizens on the planet right now. I consider myself immensely fortunate to be a part of such an extensive community of people that are together because of God. Being Catholic has opened doors for me to see the world differently than if I wasn't Catholic. My entire life would be mismatched if I wasn't Catholic. My faith affects many aspects of my life such as my actions and decisions. The school that I go to, the friends that I have made, and what I do on Sunday are all affected by the fact that I practice the Roman Catholic faith. Being Catholic has had a positive influence on how I live my life and how I survey the world. Being Catholic has made just about every part of my life different. The schools that I have gone to since first grade have been Catholic schools. The friends that I have made are because I am Catholic, and I also go to church almost every Sunday. The impact that my faith has had on my life is not comprehensible. Activities like praying to God and asking him for help has just become second nature because of how often I do it. In a single school day I participate in at least four different prayers. Some people look at a cross and just think of it as a shape, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I now know that I must be a disciple of Christ so that he did not sacrifice himself for no reason. • 17. Faith and Politics Essay Faith and Politics Nowadays, more so than ever before, religion plays a significant role in American presidential elections. As citizens, our job is to examine that role and decide how it will affect our vote. The Bush/Gore campaign has been very much influenced by religion. Joseph Lieberman, Gore's running mate and the first Orthodox Jew to run for vice president on a major party ticket, has been extremely vocal about his faith. Both George W. Bush and Al Gore, a Methodist and Baptist, respectively, have also referred to their religious beliefs during this presidential campaign ("Anti–Defamation League Criticizes"), raising several questions about the part religious faith plays in presidential elections. First, what role ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And now we think Senator Lieberman crossed it" (Pellegrini). The ADL is concerned partly because of the possibility that Lieberman's comments will rouse anti–Semitism in the American public. The Pew Research Poll found that of those bothered by the merging of religion and politics, 49 percent supported Lieberman and 30 percent did not. The statistics were virtually the same among those who reported they were not concerned with politicians discussing religion. These results show that, so far, there doesn't appear to be any hostility against Lieberman. Examining the bigger picture, the poll found that about three quarters of the American public have a positive view of Jews (Lester). This means that while the public isn't annoyed because he's Jewish and referring to his faith; but perhaps his references to his faith may be negatively pinned to his being Jewish–changing our perception of Jews. The Anti–Defamation League is also concerned with the (not–so– popular) principle of separation of church and state. "We do not think that religion belongs in the political campaign and political arena," Foxman declared to The New York Times. "There's nothing wrong with somebody professing their faith and going to church or synagogue, but this is almost hawking it" (Pellegrini). Faith and prayer guided the survivors in their decision making on the mountain, and they were essential to the survival of the men. The Catholic faith, along with prayer, can lead a person to do marvelous things. The survivors of the crash in the Andes Mountains were extraordinary examples of this. All of the young men had grown up in Catholic families, and they had received a Catholic education. Because of their strong faith, their relationship with God became a crucial part of their decision making and survival on the mountain. Prayer would reassure them that God was with them and guiding them every day. When the group decided to eat the dead, their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When on the expedition, Canessa and Parrado found faith essential to their journey. Those back on the mountain also needed prayer to get through the endless nights and painful days. Without God the men would have found no reason to stay alive. Faith and trust in God played an enormous role in the decision making of the survivors. The young men on the mountain never left God out of an important decision regarding the good of the group. From a young age, the men had learned the Catholic faith. Their families raised them to be Catholic, and they all attended Catholic school. At home, their faith was very important to them, and it became even more essential to them on the mountain. They could not make an important decision without first deciding if it coincided with their beliefs. The most prevalent example of this is when they were deciding if they should eat the dead. • 23. The Definition Of Interfaith Marriage As A System Of... According to the Merriam–Webster dictionary (2004), the prefix "inter" means "between, among, together" or "involving two or more." It also says that the word "faith" means "strong belief or trust in someone or something", "belief in the existence of God", or "a system of religious beliefs." In the instance of the term "interfaith", we can put the two definitions together and say that interfaith is involving two or more systems of religious beliefs, or an existence of God. The dictionary defines "marriage" as "the relationship that exists between a husband and wife." So, putting the words "interfaith" and "marriage" together would ultimately mean that the man and wife have two different religious belief systems. Turner and West's (2006) book, Perspectives on Family Communication, defines interfaith marriage as "unions that include at least two different religious identities." That is the definition of interfaith marriage in its simplest form, but an interfaith marriage is far more complex than just its meaning. To me, and also many others across the globe, interfaith marriage is a relationship that needs special commitment and attention, and now, I will attempt to show you why. Religion has always been known for impacting marriage quality and satisfaction (see, for example, Hood et. al.,1996), who also explain that "a major reason for shifting from one religious body to another occurs when people of different faiths marry." Knowing that marriage is often the reason that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Research Paper On Catholic Faith Criterion A: Rationale and Preliminary Research The biggest living figure in the Catholic Faith is the Pope, who leads us everyday by spreading and giving God's word. The Pope brings us closer to God in many different spiritual ways. The topic I have chosen to pursue is, how someone can become the Pope. One of the main reasons I have chosen this topic is because I am a very dedicated catholic and have been practicing my religion since I could ever remember. Our current Pope right now is a inspiration to me and it really makes me interested in what it takes to become Pope because when I listen to him speak I can see how confident he is and how much courage he has, and that is what strong leaders are made of. My main motivation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are about 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide that make up almost sixteen percent of the total world Population. (BBC News) That is a tremendous amount of people. The Pope rules over all of those people in the organization known as " The Catholic Church." Becoming Pope is no simple task by any means. Even when it seems that someone is very close to becoming the next Pope, the percentage of them actually becoming Pope is very slim. In fact, just the odds of becoming Pope of someone is a cardinal is less then one percent, and you must become a cardinal to be elected Pope. The odds are not in anybody' favor as they are 1,000 to 1(Kristi Barlette, Times Union, 12 Feb, 2013). Although. There are few steps to becoming Pope; each step is a long, difficult practice. First, a person must be a male and he must eventually become Catholic. The next step is to get an education, for religious studies and other academic subjects as well. Then, the person must become a priest. He must do a good job in his parish and connect with the community. After the person has spent some time and earned a great deal of respect from other people, he will be addressed as "Monsignor". • 27. Why Religion And Spirituality? Theme One: Why religion and spirituality? The first theme that I have identified as significant in my spiritual journey is 'Why religion and spirituality?' To me this theme encompasses and seeks to illuminate the burning desire that human beings have to find answers to questions that give meaning to their life. The main premise of Mackay's book is about the people's desire for a life of meaning, be that with, or without the traditional institutionalized idea of God. In the first chapter Mackay discusses that humans are innately built to search for answers and that we seek to understand the world around us and reasons for our own existence. Mackey suggests that in some part, religion, and spirituality, is a way to fulfil our own burning desire to answer these questions. However, as human knowledge and understanding continue to develop and provide technology that is able to gather data in order to make hypothesis and in some instances provide evidence based answers for some questions, our reliance on religion for these answers seems to be waning. However, Mackay indicates that religion will continue to prosper due to key factors, among others, Mackay mentions a human's needs to believe and their need to belong. This theme highlighted the significance that faith and a sense of belonging have in our society. Through reading Beyond Belief, I was drawn to reflect on the impact of faith in my personal life, and a yearning to belonging in my professional life. With reference to ... • 29. Comparing the Mormon Religion to Catholic and Protestant... Comparing the Mormon Religion to Catholic and Protestant Faiths The Mormon religion is very unique in many of its doctrine. While technically a Protestant faith, the Mormons generally share more doctrine with the Catholics. Because of its unique nature, I will be analyzing the Mormon faith, its history, organization, and doctrine, in comparison with the beliefs held by both Catholics and Protestants. Establishment On April 6, 1980, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints (aka the Mormon Church) was founded. [It is interesting to note that according to Mormon doctrine (Doctrine and Covenants 20:1), April 6 is the birthday of Jesus Christ.] 10 years prior to this event, in 1820, fourteen–year–old Joseph Smith ... Both Martin Luther and John Wesley shared the belief that Catholic faith had strayed from the truth as is seen in their respective quotes: "I have sought nothing beyond reforming the Church in conformity with the Holy Scriptures. . . . . . . I simply say that Christianity has ceased to exist among those who should have preserved it." (Luther and His Times, E.G. Schweibert) and "It does not appear that these extraordinary gifts of the Holy Ghost were common in the Church for more than two or three centuries. We seldom hear of them after that fatal period when the Emperor Constantine called himself a Christian; . . . From this time they almost totally ceased; . . . The Christians had no more of the Spirit of Christ than the other Heathens . . . . This was the real cause why the extraordinary gifts of the Holy Ghost were no longer to be found in the Christian Church; because the Christians were turned Heathens again, and had only a dead form left." (The Works of John Wesley, vol. 7) While the Mormons agree with other Protestants that the Catholic Church had become corrupt with its "indulgences", purchase of church offices, etc., the Mormons differed somewhat in their solution to this problem. The Protestants sought to reform the problems they saw evident in the Catholic faith. The Mormons, however, believing that all faiths upon the Earth had fallen away from the true church established by Christ, sought to restore ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Elements Of Catholicism And Voodoo A religion can be defined as a system of belief that manifest, to some degree, the following eight elements: belief system, community, central myths, ritual, ethics, characteristic emotional experience, material expression, and sacredness. Depending on the religion, some of these elements may carry more weight than others. I will look at Catholicism and Voodoo and the role some of these elements play within these systems of belief. Catholicism is a monotheistic religion believing that God is the Creator of all that is. We must love and serve God in our daily life, through prayer and good works, in order to achieve salvation. The element of central myths plays a large role within the Catholic faith, as the Bible is the core of Catholic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eucharist is when we receive the body and blood of Christ through the symbols of bread and wine. It further extends the initiation that took place at baptism "to enter fully into the heart of Christian faith through participation in the Eucharist" (catholic.org,2017). Confirmation is the final step of initiation. It is receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit that unites us more firmly with Christ and strengthens our bond with the Church. The remaining four Sacraments guide us through the rest of our life. The Sacrament of Penance is received regularly to confess our sins and seek forgiveness so that we may remain in God's grace. The Sacrament of Marriage takes place when two people commit to spend the rest of their life together, anointing of the sick is when a priest anoints a sick person with oil and offers prayers, and Holy Orders is the sacrament that takes place with the ordination of a bishop, priest, or deacon into ministry (Molloy, M., 2010). Voodoo is also a monotheistic religion that combines Catholic and African beliefs and is often surrounded by many misconceptions. Voodoo has been portrayed by the media as a form of devil worship and curses, with Voodoo dolls being used to inflict pain on one's enemies (ancient– origins.net). Communion) When it came time for the communion, a very different sequence occurred than the one to which I had become so accustomed. The bread and wine were administered to the congregation, not by forming a line towards the priest, but by having select people administer both a small helping of something bread and a small cup of "wine", or grape juice. The idea behind this was that, only when every member of the service held the bread and wine, did they, as a group, receive the communion together. Observing this allowed me to re–evaluate the process familiar to me all my life: does it not make sense to receive the communion as a community? Though this process is not too far off from our own practices, I still found it to be a rather interesting understanding and practice of what is meant behind the communion of Christ. Community) Unlike the solemn, reserved attitude of a Catholic entering his pew for an early morning mass, the atmosphere of this church when I first entered the building was full of life. I looked around and saw that, to my surprise, every person was on their feet, socializing with the other members of the congregation. Among the crowd I could hear conversations pertaining to the welfare of another's family or career or even the simple question of how are you. I believe that it is a good incentive to teach and learn about all the different religions, cultures, and faiths that are practiced all around the world. It not only expand one's knowledge about other ideologies, but moreover prevents people from categorizing, and labeling an individual with another faith. We have seen this phenomenon occur in the Sikh community after 9/11, simply because people are ignorant, and do not have any knowledge about other faiths. It is true that both are similar; however, Protestants and Catholics equally are against the acceptance of Mormons to be Christians. There are many doctrinal similarities between the Catholic Church and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon). Both churches accept Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world and teach that salvation comes through faith in Christ, repentance and baptism. The differences between the two churches revolve around priesthood authority, continuing revelation, the nature of God, the purpose of mortality and eternal marriage as well as methods of baptism. Beyond its shared nature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Catholics feel a child is born with a fallen human nature and is tainted by original sin. Therefore, their belief is that newborns are born with original sin and are in need of baptism to enter heaven. The Church and the parents would deny a child the priceless grace of becoming a child of God were they not to confer Baptism shortly after birth. (Catechism of the Catholic Church pg. 1250) Catholic Church Father St. Augustine (d. 430) taught that children who die without baptism go to hell. This statement was later softened to say that children who die, without baptism, go to a quasi–heaven called limbo. In the Catholic religion the bishop, priest or deacon are called upon to perform baptisms. In case of necessity, anyone, even a non–baptized person, with the required intention, can baptize by using the Trinitarian baptismal formula phrase "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit", or words to that form and effect, referring to the three persons of the Christian Trinity. It is often followed by an "Amen". Mormons believe infant baptism is unnecessary. Unbaptized children are saved through the power of Christ's atonement (Moroni 8:12). How My Faith Changed My Life "Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations" (Deuteronomy 7:9). Through all generations of my family leading up to today, my family, on my mother and father's sides, all practice the same faith. All of my family is Catholic, most of my friends growing up were catholic, and everywhere I looked, my faith was an important part of my life. I went to private school for nine years; the same one many of my cousins and my siblings attended. All of the people around me when I was a child prayed and worshiped like I was taught to do. They were the ones that influenced me to go deeper into my faith. Through the daily religion classes and weekly masses, to the teachers and priest that influenced my morals and values, I look back on those days as times I cherish. I had learned to open my heart and let others in to take a part in my life. I set boundaries for myself to be a respectful person and keep my faith. And most importantly, I am a life worth living as we are all made from the same image of God. Private school is the reason I am the person I have grown to be today and I will become tomorrow. The eldest of three, raised in a traditional Catholic environment in Cincinnati, religion, family, and school have always been intertwined. He attended a Catholic high school and wanted to attend a Catholic college as well. Religion has been constant for him; he described moments where it was hard for him to have faith, but he never lost sight of the bigger picture and believes that God has a plan and will take care of us. He is deeply connected with religion as an ethical call to go beyond the self. Religion, from his point of view, is selfless. He hopes to used his religion to help others, which in turns helps him grow spiritually and develop a strong character. For some, religion is going to church and practicing the ceremony of worshiping with others. Jack, on the other hand, does not find meaning in the ceremony of religion, but the practice outside of the church. When describing his religion, he stated, "the order of mass does not do much for me, I find meaning in going out and making connections with others." For him, practicing faith is going out of his way to make everyone feel welcomed and comfortable, establishing his religion as a prominent aspect of his overall personality. Because Jack does not see the importance of the order of religion, he has no particular place of event attached to his religion; Jack's religion is on a much more personal level. • 49. The Relationship Between Faith And Reason In The Catholic... Faith and Reason have long been a topic of discussion in the Catholic Church. Some might say that faith and reason contradict each other, but the Catholic church disagrees. In the Catechism of the Catholic church it states,"Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy between faith and reason. Since the same God who reveals mysteries and infuses faith has bestowed the light of reason on the human mind, God cannot deny himself, nor can truth ever contradict truth."37 Consequently, methodical research in all branches of knowledge provided it is carried out in a truly scientific manner and does not override moral laws, can never conflict with the faith, because the things of the world and the things of faith derive from the same God. The humble and persevering investigator of the secrets of nature is being led, as it were, by the hand of God in spite of himself, for it is God, the conserver of all things, who made them what they are"(CCC 159).The Catholic church teaches that reason is a gift from God, and therefore, all things researched are done through because he is the one who has created the person doing the reasoning. God wants us to use our minds in ways that honor him, and the Catholic church continues to reinforce that this idea of faith and reasoning go together, hand–in–hand. Many of the first Europeans to arrive in Maryland did so in order to escape religious persecution in England. Maryland thus came to be considered the birthplace of religious freedom in America. However, residents of Maryland, along with many people throughout the world, continue to face challenges to religious freedom. Since the early settlers of this area were motivated by religious freedom and toleration, Maryland has grown into a center of religious activity in which issues and challenges regarding religion remain important to the people of Maryland today. Throughout many historical periods, persecution of minority religions reigned prominently in England. The Catholics are one such group to experience oppression by the English sporadically throughout European history. The first wave of Catholic persecution occurred when King Henry VIII declared himself head of the Church of England in 1534. He accomplished this via the Act of Supremacy, which made any allegiance to the Pope legally treasonous. • 53. Confused Congregation By William Shakespeare Confused Congregation During Shakespeare's time, the Protestant religion was required to be followed by law. This protestant religion provided the view to its followers that their lives were controlled by a predestined fate. The people were totally helpless in their movements in their lives who already had a path laid out in front of them and they could do nothing to divert the path. This truth of the protestant movement was in a constant rivalry with the opposing view of Catholicism. The catholic view and belief is that the path of life is freely chosen not dependent or controlled by some force or fate. This struggle and this confusion with which religion, with its two opposing factors of fate versus free will along with their contrasting ornate and historic ceremony and traditions, is seen and demonstrated in all its glory by the characters and plot in many of Shakespeare's plays. This confusion, due to the flip–flopping of religions and the nostalgia involved as one religion is replaced with another in a seemingly unending cycle during Shakespeare's time, creates the hodgepodge religious backdrop for his plays. The struggle of religion was real during Shakespeare's time. The constant back and forth of the protestant and catholic views stemmed straight from the top. No matter how much I enjoy the open discussion, I often struggled to share my own beliefs to others without hurting their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Catholic Faith Persuasive Essay I want to be Confirmed in the Catholic faith this year for many reasons, both for myself and for others and the Catholic Church. Confirmation is a Sacrament of Initiation in the Catholic faith. It gives us the Trinity's graces and virtues and strengthens the ones given to us at Baptism and First Eucharist. Confirmation makes a full member of the Church and grants us maturity in the faith. Confirmation gives us the strength to defend the truth of Christ and to spread the Word to others around the world. This is Confirmation to me. Staying Catholic is a huge part in being Confirmed for me. It is the base of my decision. I'm not going to get Confirmed now in the Catholic faith and later switch over to another. This is not just a choice to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. The Religious Impacts Of The First Great Awakening And The... Both The First Great Awakening and The Enlightenment generated an instant trend in the revival of religious influences. Started by Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield, the Great Awakening was most commonly understood to have its greatest religious impact between the 1730s and 1740s. American colonists had begun to become more devoted to various religions, which resulted in the toleration of many of them. Another cause of this revival dated back to the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries when a German movement, called Pietism, emphasized closely distinct personal connections with God (Gullotta, 2016). This movement spread as a result British, German, Scottish, Scotch–Irish immigration that then influenced British and Dutch religion (Gullotta, 2016). As a consequence, American colonists had begun to become more devoted to various religions, which resulted in the toleration of many of them. One of the effects of The Great Awakening on the British North American colonists was the religious rule. The ties between culture and politics through religious movements changed the norms of the colonists. Other than immigrants from town to town the visitation of preachers caused an emergence of opposition about the truth of the church and creation of new sects and Protestant denominations. A few of the preachers who led these preaching tours included George Whitefield, Theodore Jacob Frelinghugusen, James Davenport, Samuel Davis, and Gilbert Tennent (Gullotta, 2016). ... • 73. Religion In John Portier's The Dead Man Walking "Whether we agree with religious people or their critics or simply don't know, the near–universal appeal, the persistence and the transforming power of religions are intriguing," Portier once said. People are always intrigued by religion. Even if people do not have a faith or religion, they are intrigued about the power of religion and are searching for answers. Portier defined religion in terms of life's "greatest questions." People are always questioning the supernatural. The definition of religion relates to the Dead Man walking in many ways. The one way I am going to relate this to is Joey. Before Sister Helen came into his life, he had no faith in God and didn't believe. Once Sister Helen started to believe in him and pushed him to start ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was something that he was not proud of and did not want to admit. When Joey finally did own up to his mistakes, you could tell that he was genuinely sorry for what he did. Also when he apologized, he showed a new side of himself because he was opening himself up to God. Another downfall that Joey had was in the beginning he was not into questioning his religion at all and he did not want to be forgiven for his mistakes. These examples showed a lack of participation in "religion" according to the definition of the Catholic intellectual tradition that Portier ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. The Affordable Healthcare Act And The Catholic Faith The Affordable Healthcare Act and the Catholic Faith The healthcare system of the United States was established as a system of health and welfare programs created to provide affordable treatment to the citizens of the United States. Recently, the Affordable Health Care Act was passed changing the structure of the system (Mulvany, 2012). While in theory the new arrangement works, it has its flaws due to the resulting cost, slowness, and the government interfering with religious and personal beliefs. These problems have led many people to question the role of the government in the life of the individual. The Supreme Court 's favorable ruling on the Affordable Health Care Act allowed for healthcare to be available for many Americans who would otherwise not receive medical benefits. This is because it increases the number of people covered by Medicare/Medicaid, and lowers the cost of insurance through employers. While this idea is good in theory, paying for it is a challenge due to the fact that it will only add to the nation's already enormous debit of several trillion dollars (Mulvany, 2012). From 2010–2019, the United States is predicted to spend around 400 billion dollars on healthcare. This prediction has prompted lawmakers to reduce spending on Medicare, Medicaid and other welfare programs. The spending cuts will result in less people getting the care they need due to the limited availability of money for care and the increase in the number of beneficiaries receiving ... A study conducted by Dr. Harold Koenig and Dr. Harvey Cohen found that those who attended church at least once a week were half as likely as to have elevated levels of an immune system protein involved in a wide array of age–related diseases than those who do not attend. [Duke Medicine] Because they are more likely to effectively cope with stress, many religious followers would have a lower blood pressure when compared to those who aren't religious. The catholic faith, like many others, supports avoiding drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. An individual's health can be hindered when they associate with unhealthy habits such as these.
