Preliminary Evaluation
1. Preliminary Evaluation – Sisters
Overall I was quite happy with my film. I have never studied media before and this was the first time
I properly made a film. However there is lots I feel I need to improve on. When I filmed, I didn’t use a
tripod for some shots. I never knew how much of an impact it would have therefore when I film my
two minute film opening, I will use a tripod as it can be quite off -putting if the camera is shaking.
Also, I need to work on my focusing. I set the camera on auto focus which can sometimes work but
when you have short clips it can take time for the camera to focus. Therefore in the future I will use
manual focus as it gives an overall better result.
When I did my script, I planned out where I would meet the criteria (match on action, 180 degree
rule and shot reverse shot). Therefore I was certain I would include all the points I needed too. It
wasn’t until I watched it back that I broke the 180 degree rule at one point. This made me realise
how easy it was to break important rules like the 180 degree rule. Therefore in my pre-production
for my two minute film I will create a detailed storyboard and then a shot list to ensure I don’t make
silly mistakes like this again.
I feel one of my strengths was the story. It was over complicated for a first film and easy to follow.
Although I am excited to tackle a story/script that is more challenging as it will be a lot more
interesting to film and to edit as I can add in music and sound if needs be.
Overall I am pleased with my preliminary task as to me it was a practice for future films as I have
never done anything like it before. I will focus on my feedback about filming and shots as I feel these
points can boost the overall outcome of the film.
