Prelim evaluation
1. Evaluation for Preliminary Task
During the pre-productionof my prelim task, I had several ideasfor the
film- but one was clearer and was simpler to shoot and edit. My first
idea was to create a similartype of film as my two minute film
opening- I wanted to make it a low-lightingmysterious Western film,
with two cowboy-like characters having a serious convocation. My
other idea was to simply write a humorousscript, and set it in a normal
classroom. I decided that the second option was more appropriateis it
wasn’t too complex for a prelim film. So I finalisedthe idea and then
wrote up the script. In my prelim task I have to use shots such as shot
reverse shot and match on action, as well as this I have to use the 180
degree rule. These compulsory shots made the decision between the
two ideas easier to make, as it would be easier to focus on the simpler
set and script. Once I had finished the pre-production of my prelim task
(story-boarding, writing the script, choosing a locationetc.) I started
filming. I planneddifferent ways of how I could fit the different shots I
needed into my film. Whilst shooting the film there were successful
and non-successful things that happened.I think that my main
weakness was getting to grips with the 180 degree rule. It wasn’t untilI
started to edit the film that I realised that I had not obeyed the 180
degree rule- consequentlyI had to re-shoot the whole film to make it
obey the rule and perfect a few minor mistakes. This is one of the
things I would do differently- the next time I film. I would take more
time and be more focused to include vitalcamera angles (180 degree
rule) so that I it clear to the audienceand doesn’t confuse them. On
the other hand my main strength whilst making the film was realising
that I should film several shots of the same scene- this made it easier
whilst editing and made sure there weren’t any mistakes that couldn’t
be un-done without re-shooting. Also, I think that my editing work on
premier pro was confident, despite no previousexperience on the
programme. From doing this task it has let me experiment with using
different effects whilst filming and editing, and I have learnt more in
2. depth about how I can go from one shot to another, using a wide
variety of shots. Overall I am pleased with the outcome of the film,
especiallyas it was my first time. As I have previously said, if I was to
repeat the task I would take more time making sure there weren’t any
minor issues with the footage. Lastly, after reviewing my film with my
class I had some feedback. It includeda good storyline and all the
compulsory elements were included. But next time I shouldexperiment
with lighting and sound a bit more.
