In other words, the doctrine had two requirements, which were a personal attack rule and a political editorializing rule. The personal attack rule was
the portion regarding the right of public figures who had been attacked during a FCC licensed broadcast to respond to that attack. The political
editorializing rule meant that for any endorsed or opposed candidate that was spoken of on a show, there must be reply time offered to the unspoken of
candidate.
By nature of its requirements, this doctrine was less concerned with the interests of the radio broadcasters themselves but with the interests of the
listening public. Due to limited access to radio waves the FCC was mainly concerned with public interest in getting fair and balanced information so
that they may be an informed republic and make educated decisions, especially with regard to politics. The airwaves were a part of the public domain
and under regulation of the government and the FCC did not want the airwaves to become monopolized. Private entities do not necessarily work for the
public interest without incentive. Thus, by law the FCC only renewed broadcast licenses to those radio stations that complied with the Fairness Doctrine.
The Court ruled on the side of the Defendant, the Federal Communication Commission and it was a unanimous vote. Justice White wrote for the Court
and he wrote that it was not possible to leave radio waves ungoverned by the fairness doctrine due to the spectrum scarcity. The

Media has taken up an important role in our Democratic society. Today it would be extremely difficult to carry on this democracy without the use
of the media. Its essential use grants citizens the right to freely express themselves and allows the public to be well informed. Under the First
Amendment, citizens have the right to freedom of speech and freedom of the press. They are present with two ways of getting their information,
either from printed or digital media. These two forms provide a great way to communicate with a large audience by newspapers, radios, televisions,
or online. Not only does the media help the public get their voice heard, it also has an initial responsibility to supply the public with information,
cover current events, and help form educated opinions. For example, with the public being informed directly through different sources, it reduces the

A Brief Intro/Background
This letter will no doubt be hard for many of you to read, I empathize as it was also hard to write. I beg your patience and hope you read through to
the end. What I would like to convey to you is my recent shift in world view. That is to say that I recently came to realize that I am an atheist.
This is likely shocking to most of you. Let me be clear by what I intend to convey by identifying as such. I do not mean to say I am opposed to religion,
or claim there is no God. I still identify very much with LDS culture and attend church regularly. Rather, I identify as an atheist as a way to convey
that I seem to have lost Faith that there is a God. Over the last year I have studied and ponder in depth to discover as best I could truth. Before I get
there I want to be clear as to the perspective in which I am coming from.
I was raised in a very active and loving family of the LDS Church. My family is still very active, my father and my mother have served in
leadership roles. They are both full of faith and charity and am grateful for their love and support throughout my life. I, myself have served in
leadership roles in the church both as a young man and as a missionary for the church. I served a 2 year mission in west Texas spreading the gospel of
Jesus Christ as I understood it. I was married in an LDS temple to my wonderful wife. My in–laws are also very devout members of the LDS church.

During the 19th century the United States witnessed major changes. America went through its own industrial revolution and the technological
advancements in manufacturing created a surplus in manufactured goods. The country was producing more than it could consume. The Industrial
Revolution evolved the country from a consumer of manufactured goods to a producer, causing a raising need for raw materials.
During the latter half of the 19th century, the country faced one of the worst depressions on the history of the US. It began in 1893 and it lasted for
more than four years and has put more than half of the labor force out of work.

their businesses and for profit. New colonies also provided captive markets for manufactured good. All these reasons pushed for the rise of Imperialism.
At the turn of the 20th century, the United States began to look at two foreign policy issues, isolationism and expansionism. Once the U.S. had its inland
empire secured after the Indian wars, it began to look outward. Even though they were determined to remain detached from the Europeans, they
believed it was their right to expand.
The rise of the United States as a world power, put the country against other colonial powers such as Britain and Germany.

1) There are several landmark U.S. court cases pertaining to the media and free press which changed the laws on behalf of journalists and reporters.
One of the earliest cases of such cases was Crown v. John Peter Zenger. In 1734, a news printer namedJohn Peter Zenger of the New York Weekly
Journal was arrested for seditious libel against Governor William Cosby when Zenger's publication criticized the politician for corruption. The charge
of libel in this particular historical time meant anything written in opposition to the government, but Zenger was acquitted by the jury based on the
fact he did not print false facts, so his actions did not constitute libel. His case, however, did not establish any drastic ruling on libel but it was a large
step towards freedom of the press; it changed the way the public, colonial courts, and American journalists treated the idea of censuring their print
media. The Zenger case established that writers being able to inform the public about important and true information concerning their leaders, even if
that writing is defamatory, should be a permissible form of speech. This decision opened up the press as a space for serious political discussions and
