A Case Study: Managing Threats of Campus Violence at
Michigan Community Colleges
Statement of the Problem An unknown factor regarding the management of potential acts of campus
violence is how community college administrators use information obtained from campus threat
assessments to objectively address the potential threat. Based on the literature reviewed, the violent
shooting incident at Virginia Tech in 2007 and other acts of violence at academic institutions since
then have been the catalysts for 4–year college and university ... Show more content on

This team should be comprised of a cross–section of personnel that includes administrators, staff,
and faculty. These teams can be called Student Cares Committees or Behavior Intervention Teams.
According to Deisinger and Randazzo (2008), the assessment team "is perhaps the most critical tool
that a college or university can use to prevent targeted violence on campus, as well as identify and
intervene with other problems that affect the health and well–being of the campus community." (p.
14). The team or committee can meet weekly, bi–weekly, monthly or as needed. The team or
committee will have the authority to review and discuss any students, staff, or faculty who have
raised concerns and/or may be at risk of harming either themselves or others, or who pose a
significant disruption to the learning environment. The team may receive and assess all reports of
threatening or other alarming behaviors by any student, staff, or faculty. There may be others who
could have an impact on campus safety as well who are not directly associated with the college,
such as citizens who reside near the college or have indicated by way of some form of
communication of their intent to do harm to people on the campus. It is the team's responsibility to
evaluate the legitimacy of the concern or

The Influence of the Student Protest Movement on United...
The 1960's was a decade filled with controversies and the fight for equality. The Student Protest
Movement was the fuel to the fire that feed many protests on several important matters. At the
beginning the students stood for a positive change in America. It is certain that such beliefs gave
theses activist the title of dreamers. They would start small but eventually make their way up against
the government, also known as "the man". The beginning of the movement held different beliefs
from what eventually cause its end. I believe that at first the movement had high hopes of achieving
success for others, but by the end, the movement accompanied by many opposing viewpoints, began
to lose sight of what they had set out to do in the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, the SDS was neither intellectually nor psychologically ready to take on the
educational system. The working–class whites seemed to be the right group for the radical student's
attention. This was clearly not revolutionary, but they were oppressed and the SDS with their
optimistic view, wanted to help. They organized in the slums where students would work alongside
the residents to better understand what they were going through. The problem with programs such as
these is that most of the organizers were students who, when school started, would have to leave and
attend college (Unger 60). Students who returned to campuses after these summer programs no
longer saw their campuses as safe. The University of California at Berkeley saw the greatest impact
from the mood set by returning students. Students began to protest the administrations control over
activities. Many students were passionate in the fight, however for some it was nothing but a
diversion from school and boredom (Unger 68). Those few students, who just wanted to cause
mischief, would start a how new side to the Student Protest Movement.
The SDS would fight for what it originally believed in, although several factors would add to its
inevitable collapse. Many protests in the United States, as well as around the world, became violent
and SDS couldn't understand what was happening with the Student Protest Movement

The Impact Of Diversity On College Campus Analysis
Diversity is common among all ages, even children show diversity. But what determines it? In The
Importance and Benefits of Diversity, by Sara T., she explained that: "Diversity is not always just
what background you come from but is any unique difference between human beings. Diversity
includes physical appearance, religious belief, and race but your opinions and thoughts and the
impact they make on society are also part of diversity." This shows us that diversity can come in
many forms, but to grasp a more firm definition, let's look at The Impact of Diversity on Campus by
Ashley Henshaw: "On a college campus, "diversity" refers to the variety of people and experiences
to which students will be exposed." Along with that we have to consider multiple factors that are
about day–to–day life as Sara T. mostly stated: Religion, cultural background, geographic location,
socioeconomic status, sexual orientation and ability. So with you, the audience, now understanding
how is it form, let's move on to the next topic: How does the influence of other people ... Show more

Sophie Kerby in her article, 10 Reasons Why We Need Diversity on College Campuses, provided
some highlighted points of why there should be diversity on college campuses. Some of these points
that show the impact on college campuses are: "1. Our nation is changing, and our higher education
institutions need to reflect this diversity; 2. While communities of color have made great strides in
closing the education gap, disparities in higher education remain prevalent; 8. The implications of
race–neutral policies in educational opportunities are detrimental to the next generation; 10. The
majority of Americans support race–conscious policies in higher education." So these college
students are the future of our nation, and as a result, diversity is critical in order for to work better
and to be a strong member of our

Admissions decisions are based on overall performance that includes high school GPA, course
schedule and ACT/SAT scores. Those who are eligible for regular admission as freshman must have
a minimum GPA of 2.5 in high school and an ACT score of 20. Applicants who do not meet these
minimum standards will be reviewed for admission on an individual basis. Students who gain
admission will enjoy participating in The Huntingdon Plan that includes a free laptop, cheap travel–
study, fixed tuition rates and special learning options. These include work–study, internships,
preparation programs and student–faculty research opportunities.
Huntingdon College Tuition and Financial Aid
The cost of attendance at Huntingdon College is $36,935. Tuition is $25,450, dorms are $9,100,
personal expenses are $2,035 and books are $350. The Fixed Tuition program, which is the only
plan of its kind in the region, means that students will pay the same costs for tuition all four years of
full–time enrollment. The Fixed Books program means that that cost of books is included in the cost
of tuition and fees. Over $20 million is annually administered to almost all traditional day students.
There are scholarships based on achievement, circumstance and academic merit. Some are awarded
on the basis of leadership, service or participation in specific clubs or organizations. There are

The Sculpture On South Campus At Moravian College
The sculpture on South Campus at Moravian College commonly known as Moravian Roots One and
Two, who was created by Steve Tobin in 2010 has a significant meaning behind the moderately new
sculpture. There are two of the same types of sculptures in the same place, just distance away from
one another. This sculpture seems to be abstract, since we are taking the form of what it looks like to
create a meaning, which can be something different in other people's eyes. The sculpture is a dark
black shade that naturally blends in with the surroundings, therefore making it blend in with its
natural surroundings. The negative space between the roots are easily seen since its roots are based
in various directions, showing us how far the roots of the sculpture and realistically Moravian has
grown. There is no base or pedestals for these two sculptures who go hand in hand together, but it is
roughly around five feet standing upward and going in sporadic directions, to signify differences.
They are roundly shaped with carved pointed edges giving the image that it is like a tree root or
branch, being slightly pointed on the top. The inner parts of the "tree roots" are textured off to have
a little dots making it a bit rougher than the soft and smooth outer sides that we see from a distance.
There seems to be no said real front or back side to this piece because the tree roots go in different
directions, therefore giving the observer a chance to decide which way they would like to view it.

Pros And Cons Of Gun Control On A College Campus
Gun control is a major topic in today's society and It is broken into many subcategories that all have
different arguments and views. A few examples are The Second Amendment is not an unlimited
right to own guns, more gun control laws would reduce gun deaths and more gun control leads to
fewer suicides in the United States. The gun control category I am focusing on in this essay is,
should teachers and students be able to carry firearms on a college campus. I chose this since I am
currently attending college and this could have an effect directly on me or ASU. The idea of teachers
and staff being able to carry firearms on a college campus has come up many times in the media
recently due to the rise in mass shootings. Many states are now looking at this problem and voting
on it. This topic is always heavily debated due to the many different sides and varying beliefs on gun
control and safety. The NRA (National Rifle Association) has a heavy influence on the united states
and who should be allowed guns and what legislation is passed. The gun control topic of firearms on
a college campus has become politicized and is commonly drawn into political debates and has
become a political tool for winning elections. Some states have already voted and taken action on
this new idea and have allowed staff to carry guns on campuses and in cars parked and locked in
secure parking lots. Another major idea that is constantly brought up with campus carry and firearms

Graduation Speech : College And The Umkc Campus
Graduation season is in full swing and here at UMKC the first ever class of bridge to college is
graduating Friday, May 6th, 2016.
Many local students knew that becoming a Roo was an option if they worked hard. That statement
has not always been true for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Bridge to
College program is for students with disabilities who would like to go to college and/or explore
career options. It is a course that is offered to High School students free of charge annually during
the spring semester. Students get the opportunity to see if both college and the UMKC campus is a
good fit. During the program the students take a course on campus while exploring the new
environment. The Bridge to College program is only one of the programs offered. In October of
2015 UMKC received a grant to start both the bridge to college and propel program. The programs
were funded by the Missouri department of Higher education in response to the declining enrollment
of Higher education. According to the Missouri department of educations website in the past five
years, college enrollment has decreased by 3.6 percent. This is a problem for the community as it is
predicted that by 2018 60 percent of jobs in the state will require a college degree or certificate.
Steps need to taken to open up higher education to more Missourians. There are only two other
programs in the state Missouri that are similar to Propel they are Thrive at the University

The Social Needs For Students ' Intellectual Development...
Introduction: Background Generally speaking, universities place emphasis on students' intellectual
development more than their personal growth. Nevertheless, many students experience college life
stressful. College students often find themselves feeling isolated as they begin their lives on a
university campus (Corey, Corey, & Corey, 2014). Therefore, their social needs in addition to their
academic needs must be addressed (see Corey, et al., 2014; Ramsay, Jones, & Barker, 2007).
Developmentally, college age individuals transition from adolescence to young adulthood (Gardiner
& Kosmitzki, 2010). One of developmental theorists, Erik Erikson (in Lerner, 2002) postulated that
young adults' developmental task is negotiating their identity within the intimate relationship.
Furthermore, Côté (2006) stressed that reflecting and exploring their lives in adolescence to
emerging adulthood helps them obtain what he called identity capital, which refers to "a repertoire
of personal resources" (Côté, 2006, p. 91). It includes both tangible and intangible resources and
attributes (Côté, 2006). Lack of engagement or passivity of adolescents and emerging adults result
in diffusion ("apathetic noncommitment" (Côté, 2006, p. 104). Gleaning from these theorists'
observations, college students face developmental tasks, which carry them forward to adulthood.
Therefore, their social needs in addition to their academic needs must be addressed (see Corey, et
al., 2014). The rate of international

College Decisions: On or Off Campus?
Upcoming college freshman face a multitude of different and challenging decisions during their
senior year of high school including deciding whether to live on campus or off campus. Each choice
presents its own positives and negatives. The choice does not come easy because every student will
have his or her own opinion of what is important. Both living on campus or off campus have their
advantages and disadvantages but on campus living can be more beneficial in the end. In order to
make the correct choice of living on or off campus all factors must be considered including costs
and personal preferences. Primarily the cost of tuition must first be considered then housing must be
added into the total cost. According to collegeboard.org the average tuition for a public four–year in
state university for the 2013–2014 year was 8,993 while the average housing cost was 9,498 which
totals 18,391 for both. It is important that the student research not only the total cost of their
decision but additional fees such as books and other personal expenses such as commuting. Books
average 1,200 per semester (collegeboar.org). Scholarships must also be accounted for so that a
student may choose a higher priced university but can afford it with their scholarships and grants.
"Scholarships and grants are often called "gift aid" because they are free money– financial aid that
doesn't have to be repaid" (studentaid.ed.gov). Options must be weighed equally to determine which

Sample Resume : On Campus At Sheridan College
Introduction
Students living on campus at Sheridan College are required to purchase a meal plan when they
enroll, which consists of certain amounts of meal swipes and flex dollars. Meal swipes are worth
about $8.99 and each flex dollar is equal to one dollar. This year, students can only use meal swipes
at dinner between 5–7 p.m., Monday through Sunday as well as for brunch on Saturdays and
Sundays. Flex dollars can be used at all the other times. The cheapest meal plans cost $1,400, and
depending on which plan is chosen, students are offered a range of 80–110 meal swipes and $450–
660 flex dollars. The dining hours Monday through Friday for breakfast are 7–10:30 a.m., lunch
hours are 10:30–2 p.m., and dinner hours are 5–7 p.m. Dining hours for brunch on Saturday and
Sunday are 11–1 p.m. and dinner hours are 5–7 p.m. Because students are only allowed to use meal
swipes at dinner, many swipes are not being utilized.

Should College Be A Campus Police?
Lately Brevard College was named one of the safest colleges in America, but the real question is are
we really safe at Brevard College? For a school that has a tuition of $38,000 and at least 800
students and the campus size of 120 acres of land, there is only a couple campus security guards
strolling around this campus and strolling an off campus resident. Two years ago, there was a
problem with some females getting stalked and almost assaulted on campus. Until this day, we have
yet to find the suspects because the suspects have gotten away because of only a one security guard
being on duty and that's not the only reason the suspects got away, it's because our security guards
are not capable enough to catch the suspects. Even though this is a small college, me and my
partners believe that Brevard College should invest in a campus police. I believe every college
should have at least campus policies regardless of the size of the campus. Every since 2007 at the
University of Virginia Tech, I think that's when college campuses should have been heavy on
security or campus police. The students on campus should be able to walk around knowing they are
safe whether it's in the daylight or nightfall. As a student of Brevard College who stays on campus, I
wonder about my safety every day. One of the most important aspect parents look for when they
send their child off to college is "Will my child be safe when l leave?" Me and my fellow colleagues
believe Brevard College should plan

Living On Campus Vs College Essay
One of the biggest choices a student who has graduated high school and is ready to enroll in college
must make is whether they should go away to school or live at home and drive to classes. Everyone
has a different opinion on this decision, and it is based on the diverse lifestyles that people live.
Most students who commute to school are told that they are not having the "full college experience"
since they do not live on campus and spend more time at home. On the other hand, those who live
on campus are told that they are wasting their money and they will not be giving the proper focus to
their studies. Both sides of the argument have positives and negatives, so it is difficult to determine
which one is the best for their individual life style. Commuting to school and living on campus have
several similarities and differences they share, such as social, individual, and economical effects.
College is the place where most students meet their lifelong friends and even their future spouses, so
the social impact on each individual is tremendous. Some students, both commuters and those who
stay on campus, choose to isolate themselves from others and do not attempt to be involved on
campus or make any friends. This is a personal decision that the individual could make in either
living situation since the same opportunities are available for all students. Even with the equal
opportunity to make friends, commuters are less likely to be involved in campus activities and only
talk

Hate Speech On College Campuses
The First Amendment declares free speech to all types of speech by all of its people. The issue arises
in a college setting where "hate speech" does not fall under free speech and is therefore enforced
with speech codes. The biggest controversy is determining what is considered hate speech and what
is not. So when did it become the governments job to determine a student's acceptance or
disapproval of another individual(s) train of thought? Implying speech codes on a college campus
only poses a threat to ones own freedom of expression and thought. Free speech in the form of hate
speech should not be regulated on a college campus because it is often times understood differently
by others, it also challenges our freedom of assertion and although ... Show more content on

Overall, speech codes on all colleges should not be allowed because they are not applied anywhere
else. Students on a college campus should be allowed to accept or deny hate speech based on their
own beliefs. The chancellor/government on a campus should not be the one to determine what is
offensive and what is not. Hate speech can be defined differently by different people, some might
learn from it, some might not care for it, but the truth of the matter is that everybody has a voice and
nobody should be allowed to take that away from

Cycling Advantages
Benefits of Cycling
Although cycling is not the popular choice among people, there is no doubt that it offers more health
benefits than other modes of transportations. An assessment done by the American College Health
Association reported that roughly 53% of students were not engaging in the daily recommended
amount of exercise (Bopp 359). To add to that, something that always comes to mind when thinking
about college and health is the infamous Freshmen 15. In the midst of their busy lives with classes,
friends, and extra–curricular activities, many students, particularly freshmen, are unable to find the
time to work out. EZ Bike is a great way to help students incorporate a little more physical activity
in their day while obtaining utility to get to places faster. A university survey shows that roughly
one–third of USC students did not even exercise for a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes any day of
week ("Healthy). By using a bike to ride around campus, students could easily obtain 20 to 30
minutes of exercise each day without even having to go to the gym.
It is true that the implementation of a bike–share program will not completely solve the problem of
college obesity or the Freshmen 15, but at the least, it can increase levels of physical activity and
promote fitness. By physically having EZ Bike and its stations on USC's campus, it serves as a
trigger. Written by Jonah Berger, Contagious: Why Things Catch On is a book that describes how
triggers are able to prompt action.

BACKGROUND
I am proposing for a library to be put into the Exton campus of Delaware County Community

we must go to the main campus of the college, which is approximately thirty to forty minutes from
the Exton location. There are many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A library that is closer for students would promote good learning habits and study skills. Students
may not wait until the last minute to do their projects and papers because resources are more readily
available to them.
PROPOSED ENVIRONMENT
The proposed environment will consist of a fully functioning library that is open to students and
faculty free of charge. If an outside member of the community would like to use the library the
school could charge them a small membership fee. This will help to raise revenue for the college
and the library.
For the first few years the library may be small but as years pass the library can expand to have
more books, magazines, research materials, computers, etc. The library can also share with the main
campus library in order to expand their materials and capabilities. I think many students and
teachers would support the addition of a library to the campus.
When the library is first constructed it should have at least a thousand books, several magazine
subscriptions, and fifteen computers. Ten of the computers should be connected to the Internet and
have common programs that students would use to write research papers and create presentations.
The other five computers should be connected to research databases only such as Ebsco. There
should also be a ?quiet area? where students can study, do homework, research material, read, write
papers, etc. A ?quiet area? would give

College Campus Shootings
College life is hard enough as is, but now college campuses are becoming more and more dangerous
and something needs to be done. Students should be able to enjoy every minute of college life
without fear of something awful happening to them. College students face dangers of shootings,
mugging, burglary, and sexual assault, among other things. College campuses are more dangerous
than ever and if colleges don't take action soon, kids will stop going to college out of pure fear.
Taking preventative measures to assure that these things do not happen is the most important part of
making college campuses safe for students. In order to prevent such dangers, campuses must keep
guns off campus except with select faculty and security guards, keep sidewalks well–lit with "blue
light" security systems spread throughout campus, and take action to prevent sexual assault. Mass
shootings are terrible tragedies that can and should be prevented in any way possible. Perhaps the
best solution would be to implement gun control laws for the entire country, but until that happens
there are actions that we can take to be sure students are safe from gun violence on campus.
Currently there are 10 states that allow anyone to carry a gun on campus, including Arkansas,
Georgia, Oregon, and Texas; and 23 states that leave the decision to ban or allow guns up to each
college or university, including Arizona, Indiana, Maine, Ohio, and West Virginia. ("Guns on
Campus," 2017, para. 5–6). One key way to

The Importance Of Free Speech In Higher Education
American society identifies itself as a society where freedom and equal opportunity for learning and
expressing new ideas are abundant and unthwarted. The free speech principle, or the principle that
all speech and ideas should be able to move freely without being impeded on by government or an
institution, is a principle American society has taken many steps to solidify and safeguard. Despite
our best efforts, differentiating ideas and free speech continue to be segregated in favor of popular
opinion especially in higher education. Often times, students along with public speakers and
professors are silenced on campus because of conflict with the public's sentiment. This obstruction
of the basic American value of free speech in higher education comes with a detrimental cost to
liberal education and the free flow of ideas.
Liberal education (the idea that education should promote all ideas or beliefs) is designed for
students to explore the vastness of the world and its many ideas. Generally students who explore
new fields and majors through education feel a desire to promote these newfound ideas, especially if
it involves politics, on their college campus. Whether it be through a group, a club, or a form of
media, students have the ability to spread mass amounts of information and ideas to both open and
unopened minds. But even with the Constitutional right that protects these students' ability to
showcase new and different ideas, this right is often times impeded on

Banning Of A College Campus
After recent increase of violence activists arose in college campus the culprit being targeted is
unregulated speech. Many campuses are forming regulations on speech codes, others choose to
remain unregulated. The decision making process is not put at ease with the first and fourteen
amendment conflicting between the citizens' rights to freedom of expression, and the right to equal
educational opportunities. Is there a middle ground that allows individuals to continue their
education in the sanction of a college campuses while not infringing on others' right to speech? The
possibility is there where we can decide what protected and unprotected speech is without turning

cannot occur on a college campus, however the fear remains on how information of others can be
used or the manipulation of first amendment can be used in a college setting. The fact remains that
there is a substantial difference between a corporation and a university. Universities are meant to be
a place of learning and just like science is able to accept new theories, we should be willing to
accept new ideas. Building tolerance as a community allows us to embrace unpopular ideas. That
being said, there is very good reasons to protect offensive or unpopular speech. During the 1950's,
minority groups didn't have the right to vote and civil rights movements sprung across the country.
Voting right activists in the South experienced various forms of mistreatment and violence. One
such event on March 7, 1965, "when peaceful participants in a voting rights march from Selma,
Alabama, to the state capital in Montgomery were met by Alabama state troopers who attacked them
with nightsticks, tear gas and whips after they refused to turn back" ("Voting Rights Act"). One can
conclude, based on the reactions, the decision to call in the state troopers and the state troopers
attacking the protestors, that these individuals found the protest offensive and threatening their
values of white supremacy. Therefore, should we banned offensive or popular speech solely on the
fact that

Rape In College Campus Essay
The biggest challenge facing college students today has nothing to do with education. It has nothing
to do with the heavy workload, the stress, or even the unreasonably high costs of tuition (even
though that is a close second). The biggest challenge that college students have to face today is rape
and sexual assault.
Rape is the most common act of crime on college campuses, and is a huge, yet overlooked problem.
One in every four college woman will be a victim of sexual assault during her years of study. That's
50 woman in an average introductory class of 200; considering that victims of rape on a college
campus are the most vulnerable during their early years of college. Part of this problem is the lack of
effort that some colleges and universities put towards educating the administrators on how to handle
these types of situations. Many of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Quite a few colleges have begun to set up Safety Poles, giving students an easy access to the
awaiting police officers on campus. However, the only way to truly fix this problem is to address its
source. One in twelve men as young adults will admit to doing a sexual act that fits the definition of
rape and/or attempted rape, and still will not refer to themselves as rapists. To fix these
misunderstandings, there should be a required college course that educates their early students on
what is acceptable and what is not acceptable to do with their peers. Some people will argue that this
is "a little too much", or "unnecessary", but no matter how many Safety Poles a college has set up,
no matter how many police officers the campus has around, no matter how many precautions the
victim takes not to get raped or sexually assaulted, if there are rapists present on campus, they will
find a way to get what they want. People must stop focusing on the victims of rape and sexual
assault, and start focussing on the actual rapists and sexual

Sexual Relationship Life From A Contemporary Female 's...
Sex on Campus– She can play that game too written by Kate Taylor of the New York Times,
composed this article to shed light on college personal / sexual relationship life from a contemporary
female's perspective. The challenges these young ladies encounters of attempting to discover and
maintain an equilibrium of partaking in an enjoyable sex life while concentrating on their scholastic
and professional objectives. Over an entire school year, interviewed by Taylor, sixty women were in
a "Hook Up" relationship. The "Hook Up" defined as a person or persons to have sex with very little
emotional ties if any, or a one night stand. The women that were interviewed attended The
University of Pennsylvania, and Princeton University. "Hooking Up" or previously entitled in the
80's, 90's and 2000's as "Just Kicking It", "Buddy" or "Booty Call", the concept remains the same,
however, with the turn of a new decade, the names change, but the concept stands as the same, on
the other hand with a feminist twist. Men for decades have taken advantage of the "Hook Up",
conversely over the last decade or so, there have been numerous professional women who have
taken control of their sexuality and have been initiating the "Hook Up". Conventional courting
within the higher institutions of higher learning as we once knew it has seized a modernistic
persona. This notion of having a "Sex Toy" encompasses far beyond the boundaries of campus life,
it has developed into a portion of the civilization in

A Sorority Is A Subculture Or A Segment Of Society 's...
All around the world sororities are a subculture or "a segment of society's population" on most
college campuses (Macionis 64). These sororities have their own language, norms, beliefs, and
values. Most college campuses have many charters or different sororities to choose from when a
student wants to pledge a sorority. On the Saint Francis University campus, there are seven
sororities that a female student can belong to. Each sorority has a different philanthropy which is a
foundation that the sorority stands behind. For example Delta Phi Epsilon stands behind the
Educational Foundation, this foundation helps women get the education that they deserve. Sororities
are known for creating a bond between girls that last a life time. The sororities have their own
language, they use words like pledge, bid, big, little, active, lavaliere, letters, and philanthropy. A
pledge is a person who accepts a bid, and a bid is an invitation to a specific chapter at their school
(Nakagoshi 1). When a female student wants to pledge a sorority they interview for a bid and the
sorority decides if they want to have the new student pledge or not. If the pledge gets the bid then
the student gets a big, a big is an older girl who has been part of the sorority for a year of more, and
the big is like a big sister they are supposed to care of their "little" or new pledge (Nakagoshi 1). An
active is a member of the sorority that has been part of the sorority for a few years. When a sister is

College Essay On Campus Diversity
When I sat down to write this essay, I tried, as my high school English teacher always instructed, to
imagine the audience for my writing. The more I thought about it, the more I pitied the college
admissions screeners who would be reading a thousand essays on diversity. Along with the expected
takes on race and ethnicity, how many of those essays would present their authors as outcasts,
loners, kids who didn't fit in at his or her school? How could I present myself as someone unique
and interesting–strange, even–without falling prey to the cliché of the self–pitying social misfit?
Let me be direct: in some ways, I am the antithesis of what one might picture as a student who
contributes to campus diversity. I am white, middle–class, and heterosexual; I have no physical
handicaps or mental challenges apart from a tendency towards sarcasm. But when I receive college
brochures picturing smiling, clean–cut teens dressed in the latest from Abercrombie & Fitch and
lounging on a blanket in the sun, I think, those people are not like me.
Simply put, I am a Goth. I wear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So you're a little weird, kid. How does that contribute to campus diversity? Well, I think I contribute
plenty. Diversity goes beyond the physical; race or ethnicity might be the first things one thinks of,
but really, it is a question of what makes someone the person that he or she is. Diversity might be
considered in terms of economic or geographical background, life experiences, religion, sexual
orientation, and even personal interests and general outlook. In this respect, my Goth identity
contributes a perspective that is far different from the mainstream. Being Goth isn't just about
physical appearance; it's a way of life that, like any other, includes not only individual tastes in
music, literature, and popular culture, but also particular beliefs about philosophy, spirituality, and a
range of other human

College Students Are Not Safe On Campus
Opposed to the college life depicted on television, college is not about partying and being
independent. Students are tossed into reality, responsibilities and uncertainty. From piles homework
assignments to the possibility of not having a meal, college life contains stress and concern. On a
macro level, each student deals with some of the same problems and these should be fixed. College
students face high tuition costs, limited job opportunities and uncertain campus security. Each of
these issues can be corrected by making college affordable, raising the minimum wage to satisfy
current living expenses and regulating rules on gun control.
Commonly, tuition costs are a huge topic for debate because college debt can follow a person for his

As an educated bunch of people, students typically watch the news. These men and women read
about school shootings and the debates on whether or not guns are safe. Especially with the
presidential election nearing, gun control is brought up in many conversations. Some believe we
have a right to carry guns and others believe guns are too risky to carry. However, every student can
agree that guns in the wrong hands are dangerous. College campuses are big targets to blame for
unhappy thoughts. For example, students are constantly under academic, personal and financial
stress; this leads to unstable people holding weapons. So, many begin to question campus security.
Students should feel safe on campus. By banning guns from campus, having metal detectors in
various locations and offering counseling students, colleges can reduce the fear of being the next
target. With automated weapons being very common, the right to bear arms must be reexamined to
fulfill freedom and security rights. Innocent students should not be burdened with more stress over
whether or not they are safe reading in the library or taking notes in class. Guns must be controlled

Black Space Research Paper
Editor's Note
The 2016 edition of the Harvard Journal of African American Public Policy is includes several
articles, commentaries and interviews that illuminate the movement to establish a Black identity,
Black Space, within institutions where Black visibility and input is limited if it exists at all.
The Politics of Black Space theme of the publication chronicles the movement of Black student and
progressive faculty leadership to form, and, by means necessary, force accountability of institutional
practices that fail to accept responsibility for the intersectional oppression, racially–void

Students have always disrupted the status quo and compelling social and institutional change. The

SNCC's community organizing and activism made them foremost and successful contributors in the

College Students Perceptions of Slut–Shaming Discourse on Campus
(Spring 2015)
Vanessa A. Almazan, M.A., Texas A&M University–Kingsville
Research Project Supervisor: Dr. Karen Furgerson
The purpose of this study was to understand the college students' perceptions of slut–shaming
discourse. The research indicated that there was a strong correlation between cultural expectations
and slut–shaming. According to the results, the perceptions of slut–shaming are influenced by
aspects such as: class, culture, media, gender, feminism, ethnicity, religion, and sexuality. Overall,
college students were found to be on crossfire of slut–shaming discourse on a college campus. It
was concluded, based on the research, the participants have significantly identified with judging a
woman by the way she dresses. It is recommended that further research be devoted to slut–shaming
perceptions in different: cultures, groups, regions, religions, organizations, media and institutions.

Raping On College Campus
Being on a college campus in today's day in age can be a very dangerous or safe place for a college
student. After reading the New York Times article by Stephanie Saul, written on April 20, 2016,
titled Raped at Office–Campus Frat Houses, Students Say, and Ignored by College, I believe that
this has become a large problem on college campuses. Making it more and more difficult to feel safe
and secure as a student when attending a university.
In this article, Kansas State University looks at if many students––mainly male and fraternity
members–are getting away with the raping of other students, with no consequence. Two KSU
students, Sara Weckhorst and Tessa Farmer, discovered this problem when they reported two rapes
in 2014 and 2015 and nothing was investigated about the issue. This and other cases were expressed
with the failure of the university to investigate and solve the problem of raping's dealing with
college students. "The Education Department has advised universities that they are required under

Persuasive Essay On Visit To College
No matter what grade you're in, campus visits in any form are beneficial. A camp at the university or
college, a campus event, or your usual campus visit are all great ways to experience the place you're
considering calling home for your college years. My mom had some great advice in this process for
me which was what helped keep my somewhat levelheaded during the college decision process.
Don't wait until senior year to do your visits
This is a sure way to be incredibly stressed out. Amongst all the efforts to survive the year, don't put
yourself in the situation of making a four hour trip one way to visit a campus. It's a huge mistake.
My mom got onto me about this. She was excited for me to be preparing for this next adventure in
my life, but she and I had to coordinate schedules to make four or five hour drives over the course of
a day or a weekend.
With two of my visits, we drove down on Saturday, spent the night, did some seeing around town
(mostly involving food) on Sunday, and visited the campus on Monday in the morning so we could
drive back home on Monday. Make the most of your trip to the campus, especially if it's farther
away from home. Find a couple places to check out or make your study home while you're in
school.

College is an interesting place. Some students struggles because they are unable to leave their

can become anything they want.

Jesus Villahermosa Thesis
After reading the essay written by Jesus Villahermosa I believe his thesis statement is "Given my
extensive experience dealing with violence in the workplace and at schools and colleges, I do not
think professors and administrators, let alone students, should carry guns". In his second paragraph,
he lays out reason as to why he feels this way and shows that he can be considered an expert in
firearm safety. Giving information into his background reinforces his position and add to his
argument against arming people on college campuses. Some may be surprised that he is against
having armed professors and students on campus because of his background. However, I am not
surprised that he is strongly against having firearm toting professors, administrators and students
throughout campuses. He is properly trained, experienced with firearm safety and marksmanship
which in turn gives him great support to his argument. Villahermosa gave ample reasons to support
his argument against carrying weapons on college campuses throughout his essay. The most
persuasive reason he gives against guns on campus is "Will faculty and staff members be prepared

having a policy that would allow guns on campus. With colleges already struggling financially a
policy allowing guns would bring even more need for funding to cash strapped institutions. The
training required would be extensive and costly to have competent people carrying and ready to use
their gun if needed. The risks involved in allowing guns on campus seem to be extremely high and

innocent bystanders are shot instead of intended

Why Do College Students Wear Off-Campus?
College students frequently debate over the decision to live on–campus, or find affordable housing
off–campus. The key question here can center on what constitutes affordable. At Jacksonville State
University in Alabama, it costs roughly the same amount of money per semester, to live in confined,
restricted, on–campus space.
That doesn't even begin to address a living arrangement full of rules and regulations. When the two
options are equally as affordable, the next step is to consider other factors in making your decision.
Here are some sound reasons why electing to secure affordable apartment housing, off–campus, is
really a wise choice.
Peace and Tranquility
Outside of the proverbial all–nighter in preparation of difficult exam, studies show that college
students need their sleep. While ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, not only is sleep important, but also so is peace and quiet just for the sake of having a
little peace and quiet. A good apartment will allow you to have an enjoyable dinner at home, a place
to focus on your studies, and somewhere to unwind from the rigors of college life.
Independence and Privacy
Beyond just a peaceful environment, it's nice to have your own space. Living on campus can really
cramp your personal style. When you elect to live off campus, your space is your own. Sure, you
pay your rent, but the reward is living independently of a series of rigid rules designed to ensure
unity.
When you come home from a long day of classes, you may need to study, or just want to relax.
Apartment living during your college days offers you the option. Your apartment is going to be your
own private space. Even if you share your apartment with another student, having your own room
will give you a sense of private independence that you will not have living on–campus.

Persuasive Essay On Banning Campus Violence
Banning Campus Violence The results of the illegal actions performed by the campus members lead
to the increasing number of victims of the violence at campus. The paper investigates the necessity
to elaborate the necessary measures and methods to stimulate the process of reducing and further
banning of the violence on campus. The essence of this approach is on the reasons, which should
motivate the education institutions' management to reduce the number of cases of violence on
campus. Therefore, the essential measure to ban the campus violence is the establishment of the
legal framework and controlling procedure over the students–members of the campuses as the cases
of the violent actions have recently become frequent enough and lead to the negative consequences
for the students' health and life. However, not all the scholars have a conviction that there is a need
to fight for the ban of violence on campuses. The audience of this paper can be diverse: from the
students to the employees of the educational institutions. The paper's structure applies the appeals of
ethos, pathos, and logos to make the reader's perception of the problem more serious and profound.
The paper comprises the statistics of the violent actions on campus which serve as a consequence of
alcohol and drug abuse by the students as well as the results of the lack of the gun control. Hence,
the research given represents a set of reasons, arguments, and counterarguments in terms of the

Multi Campus And Georgia Technical College
The public institution selected for this research project is a nonprofit, multi–campus and Georgia's
third–largest technical college based in Waco. The institution has an open admissions policy. It
enrolls less than 7,000 students annually, in certificate, diploma, and associate degree programs. The
highest degree offered at the institution is an associate degree. The student–faculty ratio is 18–to–1.
The challenge for West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) is to design and implement effective
retention strategies and programs for first–time students that monitor, encourage , and reward
student retention using available resources and without burdening faculty and staff with
cumbersome tracking and reporting procedures. While the limitations present an overwhelming task,
the consequences of not solving the problem exceed any potential limitations. With these limitations
in mind, the researcher's task is to find a workable solution. First–year retention rates involving
higher education undergraduates during the previous several years have improved marginally even
with various improvement efforts (Barefoot, 2000; Tinto, 2004). Large numbers of first–year
students are exiting college due to unsatisfactory academic skills, failures to adapt both socially and
academically, in addition to having an inadequate commitment to the objective of finishing college
(Ishler & Upcraft, 2005; Tinto, 1987). The goal of this research project is to improve student

Free Speech on College Campuses Essay

Final Essay #2
Importance of 'Free Speech'
College is a time when most individuals are experiencing major changes and begin to explore new
perspectives. The transition in becoming more independent, creating new insights and peer influence
are key factors in changing the perspective of an individual. Students are faced with new ideas from
their professors, family and fellow peers. Through that acquired knowledge many students decide
that they either agree or disagree with the perspectives that they are taught. Allowing the right of

Despite their opinions, free speech was a great way in this situation for students to rally together and
publically inform the rest of campus of their beliefs. In the school newspaper, The Daily Emerald,
CJ Ciaramelle wrote "About 300 students from across the campus community – student unions,
Greek Life, the ASUO, the Survival Center, the Women's Center – showed up at the meeting to
protest the Forum" (1). Although the majority of people protested against the forum the right to free
speech, it is important because it allows students to make decisions on their own and invite students
to do the same.
"Free speech" often has negative connotations because the negative outcomes are publicized more
than the positive outcomes. 'Free Speech' is a time for individuals to express their beliefs and topic
on an important issue. People chose to present themselves in a vast majority of ways such as,
holding signs, making t–shirts, shouting, etc. People who chose to present themselves in disrupting
ways such as, foul language, inappropriate attire are more likely to be noticed than another student
that is holding a simple and respectful sign. Schmidt states, "Universities cannot censor or suppress
speech, no matter how obnoxious in content, without violating their justification of existence" (2).
There is no definition of what type of 'free speech' should be censored and not allowed. With that
said, there should not be a limit on 'free speech'

It is my opinion that the lack of security and warning signs overlooked by administration is the chief
problem as to how these crimes take place on campuses. Did campus security and school the
administrations do enough to keep the students safe? Did fellow classmates and faculty members
ignore warning signs of both Whitman and Seung–Hui? And what security changes have been
implemented in the event of another unforeseen shooting? Since the Virginia Tech shootings, school
campuses across America have repeatedly discussed campus safety ideas such as emergency
responses and communications. Many colleges and universities have increased their security officers
on campuses while also trying high tech security options (Saavedra). One of the high tech security
measures many colleges are interested in using to alert their students is the mass text–message alerts
in case of an emergency. This is a notification system that sends text message to students on their
cell phones during a shooting, earthquake, bomb scare, or any other emergencies (Saavedra).
Although this sounds like a very good security idea, most colleges don't have the money or
resources to make this idea happen which means they are having to resort to just adding security
officers to ride around campus on bicycles with loud speakers to spread the message during
emergencies (Saavedra). Even though schools have

The Safety Of College Campus
Selecting the appropriate college can be a difficult task. Not only must one consider the cost of
tuition and housing, but another consideration is the overall safety of the campus and the
surrounding area. While colleges are a place of higher learning, they also have many of the
similarities of the city in which the college is located. Considering the crime within the city may
help determine the safety of the college. While cities must evaluate proper crime control techniques

The second way in which colleges can significantly reduce sexual assaults on campus is through
increased security protocols. These protocols can be implemented by increased lighting in poorly lit
areas, placement of closed circuit television cameras in blind spot areas, and areas less traveled by
students and staff and through additional security or police officers. Many education sources
encourage people to avoid poorly lit areas to avoid crime, therefore the same should be utilized on
campus. Increased lighting on the campus should be a top priority for the college. Increased
visibility encourages more people to take the route, which also assists in deterring crime. Within
every community and on every campus are blind spots, or areas that are less frequently traveled.
These areas a prime locations to increase the number and orientation of security cameras, to ensure
visibility in all areas of the campus. An increased number of security or patrol officers will assist in
deterring not only sexual assaults, but other crimes as well. Reduced overall crime results in an
overall safer campus. While each of these suggestions can come at a significant cost, proactive
security is substantially less expensive that an assault or other crime. Additionally, the United States

Moreover, it is not uncommon for this student to represent the community college as an athlete; in

attributes include vast numbers of first–generation students, students of color, and full–time

Perhaps the rationale behind the lack of on–campus housing offered at community colleges, which is
in stark contrast to that of four–year colleges and universities, is the fact that a large number of
community college students live in the community, or the urban community colleges are situated
whereby students may make use of mass transit means to get back and forth. This is how the system

Managing Threats Of Campus Violence At Michigan Community...

  • 1. Managing Threats Of Campus Violence At Michigan Community... Dissertation Concept Paper A Case Study: Managing Threats of Campus Violence At Michigan Community Colleges Russ Panico Western Michigan University Fall 2014 A Case Study: Managing Threats of Campus Violence at Michigan Community Colleges Statement of the Problem An unknown factor regarding the management of potential acts of campus violence is how community college administrators use information obtained from campus threat assessments to objectively address the potential threat. Based on the literature reviewed, the violent shooting incident at Virginia Tech in 2007 and other acts of violence at academic institutions since then have been the catalysts for 4–year college and university ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This team should be comprised of a cross–section of personnel that includes administrators, staff, and faculty. These teams can be called Student Cares Committees or Behavior Intervention Teams. According to Deisinger and Randazzo (2008), the assessment team "is perhaps the most critical tool that a college or university can use to prevent targeted violence on campus, as well as identify and intervene with other problems that affect the health and well–being of the campus community." (p. 14). The team or committee can meet weekly, bi–weekly, monthly or as needed. The team or committee will have the authority to review and discuss any students, staff, or faculty who have raised concerns and/or may be at risk of harming either themselves or others, or who pose a significant disruption to the learning environment. The team may receive and assess all reports of threatening or other alarming behaviors by any student, staff, or faculty. There may be others who could have an impact on campus safety as well who are not directly associated with the college, such as citizens who reside near the college or have indicated by way of some form of communication of their intent to do harm to people on the campus. It is the team's responsibility to evaluate the legitimacy of the concern or

  • 4. The Influence of the Student Protest Movement on United... The 1960's was a decade filled with controversies and the fight for equality. The Student Protest Movement was the fuel to the fire that feed many protests on several important matters. At the beginning the students stood for a positive change in America. It is certain that such beliefs gave theses activist the title of dreamers. They would start small but eventually make their way up against the government, also known as "the man". The beginning of the movement held different beliefs from what eventually cause its end. I believe that at first the movement had high hopes of achieving success for others, but by the end, the movement accompanied by many opposing viewpoints, began to lose sight of what they had set out to do in the first ... The working–class whites seemed to be the right group for the radical student's attention. This was clearly not revolutionary, but they were oppressed and the SDS with their optimistic view, wanted to help. They organized in the slums where students would work alongside the residents to better understand what they were going through. The problem with programs such as these is that most of the organizers were students who, when school started, would have to leave and attend college (Unger 60). Students who returned to campuses after these summer programs no longer saw their campuses as safe. The University of California at Berkeley saw the greatest impact from the mood set by returning students. Students began to protest the administrations control over activities. Many students were passionate in the fight, however for some it was nothing but a diversion from school and boredom (Unger 68). Those few students, who just wanted to cause mischief, would start a how new side to the Student Protest Movement. The SDS would fight for what it originally believed in, although several factors would add to its inevitable collapse. Many protests in the United States, as well as around the world, became violent and SDS couldn't understand what was happening with the Student Protest Movement ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Impact Of Diversity On College Campus Analysis Diversity is common among all ages, even children show diversity. But what determines it? In The Importance and Benefits of Diversity, by Sara T., she explained that: "Diversity is not always just what background you come from but is any unique difference between human beings. Diversity includes physical appearance, religious belief, and race but your opinions and thoughts and the impact they make on society are also part of diversity." This shows us that diversity can come in many forms, but to grasp a more firm definition, let's look at The Impact of Diversity on Campus by Ashley Henshaw: "On a college campus, "diversity" refers to the variety of people and experiences to which students will be exposed." Along with that we have to consider multiple factors that are about day–to–day life as Sara T. mostly stated: Religion, cultural background, geographic location, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation and ability. So with you, the audience, now understanding how is it form, let's move on to the next topic: How does the influence of other people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sophie Kerby in her article, 10 Reasons Why We Need Diversity on College Campuses, provided some highlighted points of why there should be diversity on college campuses. Some of these points that show the impact on college campuses are: "1. Our nation is changing, and our higher education institutions need to reflect this diversity; 2. While communities of color have made great strides in closing the education gap, disparities in higher education remain prevalent; 8. The implications of race–neutral policies in educational opportunities are detrimental to the next generation; 10. The majority of Americans support race–conscious policies in higher education." So these college students are the future of our nation, and as a result, diversity is critical in order for to work better and to be a strong member of our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Sculpture On South Campus At Moravian College The sculpture on South Campus at Moravian College commonly known as Moravian Roots One and Two, who was created by Steve Tobin in 2010 has a significant meaning behind the moderately new sculpture. There are two of the same types of sculptures in the same place, just distance away from one another. This sculpture seems to be abstract, since we are taking the form of what it looks like to create a meaning, which can be something different in other people's eyes. The sculpture is a dark black shade that naturally blends in with the surroundings, therefore making it blend in with its natural surroundings. The negative space between the roots are easily seen since its roots are based in various directions, showing us how far the roots of the sculpture and realistically Moravian has grown. There is no base or pedestals for these two sculptures who go hand in hand together, but it is roughly around five feet standing upward and going in sporadic directions, to signify differences. They are roundly shaped with carved pointed edges giving the image that it is like a tree root or branch, being slightly pointed on the top. The inner parts of the "tree roots" are textured off to have a little dots making it a bit rougher than the soft and smooth outer sides that we see from a distance. There seems to be no said real front or back side to this piece because the tree roots go in different directions, therefore giving the observer a chance to decide which way they would like to view it. ... • 12. Pros And Cons Of Gun Control On A College Campus Gun control is a major topic in today's society and It is broken into many subcategories that all have different arguments and views. A few examples are The Second Amendment is not an unlimited right to own guns, more gun control laws would reduce gun deaths and more gun control leads to fewer suicides in the United States. The gun control category I am focusing on in this essay is, should teachers and students be able to carry firearms on a college campus. I chose this since I am currently attending college and this could have an effect directly on me or ASU. The idea of teachers and staff being able to carry firearms on a college campus has come up many times in the media recently due to the rise in mass shootings. Many states are now looking at this problem and voting on it. This topic is always heavily debated due to the many different sides and varying beliefs on gun control and safety. The NRA (National Rifle Association) has a heavy influence on the united states and who should be allowed guns and what legislation is passed. The gun control topic of firearms on a college campus has become politicized and is commonly drawn into political debates and has become a political tool for winning elections. Some states have already voted and taken action on this new idea and have allowed staff to carry guns on campuses and in cars parked and locked in secure parking lots. Another major idea that is constantly brought up with campus carry and firearms on campuses is student ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Graduation Speech : College And The Umkc Campus Graduation season is in full swing and here at UMKC the first ever class of bridge to college is graduating Friday, May 6th, 2016. Many local students knew that becoming a Roo was an option if they worked hard. That statement has not always been true for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Bridge to College program is for students with disabilities who would like to go to college and/or explore career options. It is a course that is offered to High School students free of charge annually during the spring semester. Students get the opportunity to see if both college and the UMKC campus is a good fit. During the program the students take a course on campus while exploring the new environment. The Bridge to College program is only one of the programs offered. In October of 2015 UMKC received a grant to start both the bridge to college and propel program. The programs were funded by the Missouri department of Higher education in response to the declining enrollment of Higher education. According to the Missouri department of educations website in the past five years, college enrollment has decreased by 3.6 percent. This is a problem for the community as it is predicted that by 2018 60 percent of jobs in the state will require a college degree or certificate. Steps need to taken to open up higher education to more Missourians. There are only two other programs in the state Missouri that are similar to Propel they are Thrive at the University ... • 16. The Social Needs For Students ' Intellectual Development... Introduction: Background Generally speaking, universities place emphasis on students' intellectual development more than their personal growth. Nevertheless, many students experience college life stressful. College students often find themselves feeling isolated as they begin their lives on a university campus (Corey, Corey, & Corey, 2014). Therefore, their social needs in addition to their academic needs must be addressed (see Corey, et al., 2014; Ramsay, Jones, & Barker, 2007). Developmentally, college age individuals transition from adolescence to young adulthood (Gardiner & Kosmitzki, 2010). One of developmental theorists, Erik Erikson (in Lerner, 2002) postulated that young adults' developmental task is negotiating their identity within the intimate relationship. Furthermore, Côté (2006) stressed that reflecting and exploring their lives in adolescence to emerging adulthood helps them obtain what he called identity capital, which refers to "a repertoire of personal resources" (Côté, 2006, p. 91). It includes both tangible and intangible resources and attributes (Côté, 2006). Lack of engagement or passivity of adolescents and emerging adults result in diffusion ("apathetic noncommitment" (Côté, 2006, p. 104). Gleaning from these theorists' observations, college students face developmental tasks, which carry them forward to adulthood. Therefore, their social needs in addition to their academic needs must be addressed (see Corey, et al., 2014). The rate of international ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 18. College Decisions: On or Off Campus? Upcoming college freshman face a multitude of different and challenging decisions during their senior year of high school including deciding whether to live on campus or off campus. Each choice presents its own positives and negatives. The choice does not come easy because every student will have his or her own opinion of what is important. Both living on campus or off campus have their advantages and disadvantages but on campus living can be more beneficial in the end. In order to make the correct choice of living on or off campus all factors must be considered including costs and personal preferences. Primarily the cost of tuition must first be considered then housing must be added into the total cost. According to collegeboard.org the average tuition for a public four–year in state university for the 2013–2014 year was 8,993 while the average housing cost was 9,498 which totals 18,391 for both. It is important that the student research not only the total cost of their decision but additional fees such as books and other personal expenses such as commuting. Books average 1,200 per semester (collegeboar.org). Scholarships must also be accounted for so that a student may choose a higher priced university but can afford it with their scholarships and grants. "Scholarships and grants are often called "gift aid" because they are free money– financial aid that doesn't have to be repaid" (studentaid.ed.gov). Options must be weighed equally to determine which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. Sample Resume : On Campus At Sheridan College Introduction Students living on campus at Sheridan College are required to purchase a meal plan when they enroll, which consists of certain amounts of meal swipes and flex dollars. Meal swipes are worth about $8.99 and each flex dollar is equal to one dollar. This year, students can only use meal swipes at dinner between 5–7 p.m., Monday through Sunday as well as for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Flex dollars can be used at all the other times. The cheapest meal plans cost $1,400, and depending on which plan is chosen, students are offered a range of 80–110 meal swipes and $450– 660 flex dollars. The dining hours Monday through Friday for breakfast are 7–10:30 a.m., lunch hours are 10:30–2 p.m., and dinner hours are 5–7 p.m. Dining hours for brunch on Saturday and Sunday are 11–1 p.m. and dinner hours are 5–7 p.m. Because students are only allowed to use meal swipes at dinner, many swipes are not being utilized. My report will be divided into five different sections, Statement of the Problem, Research Methods, Results, Conclusions, and Recommendations. The Statement of the Problem will address what the problem or issue is, as well as causes and effects. In the Research Methods section I will explain how I gathered my information, whether by online research, interviews, or other sources. • 22. Should College Be A Campus Police? Lately Brevard College was named one of the safest colleges in America, but the real question is are we really safe at Brevard College? For a school that has a tuition of $38,000 and at least 800 students and the campus size of 120 acres of land, there is only a couple campus security guards strolling around this campus and strolling an off campus resident. Two years ago, there was a problem with some females getting stalked and almost assaulted on campus. Until this day, we have yet to find the suspects because the suspects have gotten away because of only a one security guard being on duty and that's not the only reason the suspects got away, it's because our security guards are not capable enough to catch the suspects. Even though this is a small college, me and my partners believe that Brevard College should invest in a campus police. I believe every college should have at least campus policies regardless of the size of the campus. Every since 2007 at the University of Virginia Tech, I think that's when college campuses should have been heavy on security or campus police. The students on campus should be able to walk around knowing they are safe whether it's in the daylight or nightfall. As a student of Brevard College who stays on campus, I wonder about my safety every day. One of the most important aspect parents look for when they send their child off to college is "Will my child be safe when l leave?" Me and my fellow colleagues believe Brevard College should plan ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Living On Campus Vs College Essay One of the biggest choices a student who has graduated high school and is ready to enroll in college must make is whether they should go away to school or live at home and drive to classes. Everyone has a different opinion on this decision, and it is based on the diverse lifestyles that people live. Most students who commute to school are told that they are not having the "full college experience" since they do not live on campus and spend more time at home. On the other hand, those who live on campus are told that they are wasting their money and they will not be giving the proper focus to their studies. Both sides of the argument have positives and negatives, so it is difficult to determine which one is the best for their individual life style. Commuting to school and living on campus have several similarities and differences they share, such as social, individual, and economical effects. College is the place where most students meet their lifelong friends and even their future spouses, so the social impact on each individual is tremendous. Some students, both commuters and those who stay on campus, choose to isolate themselves from others and do not attempt to be involved on campus or make any friends. This is a personal decision that the individual could make in either living situation since the same opportunities are available for all students. • 26. Hate Speech On College Campuses The First Amendment declares free speech to all types of speech by all of its people. The issue arises in a college setting where "hate speech" does not fall under free speech and is therefore enforced with speech codes. The biggest controversy is determining what is considered hate speech and what is not. So when did it become the governments job to determine a student's acceptance or disapproval of another individual(s) train of thought? Implying speech codes on a college campus only poses a threat to ones own freedom of expression and thought. Free speech in the form of hate speech should not be regulated on a college campus because it is often times understood differently by others, it also challenges our freedom of assertion and although ... • 28. Cycling Advantages Benefits of Cycling Although cycling is not the popular choice among people, there is no doubt that it offers more health benefits than other modes of transportations. An assessment done by the American College Health Association reported that roughly 53% of students were not engaging in the daily recommended amount of exercise (Bopp 359). To add to that, something that always comes to mind when thinking about college and health is the infamous Freshmen 15. In the midst of their busy lives with classes, friends, and extra–curricular activities, many students, particularly freshmen, are unable to find the time to work out. EZ Bike is a great way to help students incorporate a little more physical activity in their day while obtaining utility to get to places faster. A university survey shows that roughly one–third of USC students did not even exercise for a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes any day of week ("Healthy). By using a bike to ride around campus, students could easily obtain 20 to 30 minutes of exercise each day without even having to go to the gym. It is true that the implementation of a bike–share program will not completely solve the problem of college obesity or the Freshmen 15, but at the least, it can increase levels of physical activity and promote fitness. By physically having EZ Bike and its stations on USC's campus, it serves as a trigger. • 33. College Campus Shootings College life is hard enough as is, but now college campuses are becoming more and more dangerous and something needs to be done. Students should be able to enjoy every minute of college life without fear of something awful happening to them. College students face dangers of shootings, mugging, burglary, and sexual assault, among other things. College campuses are more dangerous than ever and if colleges don't take action soon, kids will stop going to college out of pure fear. Taking preventative measures to assure that these things do not happen is the most important part of making college campuses safe for students. In order to prevent such dangers, campuses must keep guns off campus except with select faculty and security guards, keep sidewalks well–lit with "blue light" security systems spread throughout campus, and take action to prevent sexual assault. Mass shootings are terrible tragedies that can and should be prevented in any way possible. Perhaps the best solution would be to implement gun control laws for the entire country, but until that happens there are actions that we can take to be sure students are safe from gun violence on campus. Currently there are 10 states that allow anyone to carry a gun on campus, including Arkansas, Georgia, Oregon, and Texas; and 23 states that leave the decision to ban or allow guns up to each college or university, including Arizona, Indiana, Maine, Ohio, and West Virginia. The Importance Of Free Speech In Higher Education American society identifies itself as a society where freedom and equal opportunity for learning and expressing new ideas are abundant and unthwarted. The free speech principle, or the principle that all speech and ideas should be able to move freely without being impeded on by government or an institution, is a principle American society has taken many steps to solidify and safeguard. Despite our best efforts, differentiating ideas and free speech continue to be segregated in favor of popular opinion especially in higher education. Often times, students along with public speakers and professors are silenced on campus because of conflict with the public's sentiment. This obstruction of the basic American value of free speech in higher education comes with a detrimental cost to liberal education and the free flow of ideas. Liberal education (the idea that education should promote all ideas or beliefs) is designed for students to explore the vastness of the world and its many ideas. Generally students who explore new fields and majors through education feel a desire to promote these newfound ideas, especially if it involves politics, on their college campus. Whether it be through a group, a club, or a form of media, students have the ability to spread mass amounts of information and ideas to both open and unopened minds. Universities are meant to be a place of learning and just like science is able to accept new theories, we should be willing to accept new ideas. Voting right activists in the South experienced various forms of mistreatment and violence. One such event on March 7, 1965, "when peaceful participants in a voting rights march from Selma, Alabama, to the state capital in Montgomery were met by Alabama state troopers who attacked them with nightsticks, tear gas and whips after they refused to turn back" ("Voting Rights Act"). It has nothing to do with the heavy workload, the stress, or even the unreasonably high costs of tuition (even though that is a close second). The biggest challenge that college students have to face today is rape and sexual assault. Rape is the most common act of crime on college campuses, and is a huge, yet overlooked problem. One in every four college woman will be a victim of sexual assault during her years of study. That's 50 woman in an average introductory class of 200; considering that victims of rape on a college campus are the most vulnerable during their early years of college. The challenges these young ladies encounters of attempting to discover and maintain an equilibrium of partaking in an enjoyable sex life while concentrating on their scholastic and professional objectives. Over an entire school year, interviewed by Taylor, sixty women were in a "Hook Up" relationship. The "Hook Up" defined as a person or persons to have sex with very little emotional ties if any, or a one night stand. The women that were interviewed attended The University of Pennsylvania, and Princeton University. "Hooking Up" or previously entitled in the 80's, 90's and 2000's as "Just Kicking It", "Buddy" or "Booty Call", the concept remains the same, however, with the turn of a new decade, the names change, but the concept stands as the same, on the other hand with a feminist twist. Men for decades have taken advantage of the "Hook Up", conversely over the last decade or so, there have been numerous professional women who have taken control of their sexuality and have been initiating the "Hook Up". These sororities have their own language, norms, beliefs, and values. Most college campuses have many charters or different sororities to choose from when a student wants to pledge a sorority. On the Saint Francis University campus, there are seven sororities that a female student can belong to. Each sorority has a different philanthropy which is a foundation that the sorority stands behind. For example Delta Phi Epsilon stands behind the Educational Foundation, this foundation helps women get the education that they deserve. Sororities are known for creating a bond between girls that last a life time. The sororities have their own language, they use words like pledge, bid, big, little, active, lavaliere, letters, and philanthropy. A pledge is a person who accepts a bid, and a bid is an invitation to a specific chapter at their school (Nakagoshi 1). When a female student wants to pledge a sorority they interview for a bid and the sorority decides if they want to have the new student pledge or not. If the pledge gets the bid then the student gets a big, a big is an older girl who has been part of the sorority for a year of more, and the big is like a big sister they are supposed to care of their "little" or new pledge (Nakagoshi 1). The more I thought about it, the more I pitied the college admissions screeners who would be reading a thousand essays on diversity. Along with the expected takes on race and ethnicity, how many of those essays would present their authors as outcasts, loners, kids who didn't fit in at his or her school? How could I present myself as someone unique and interesting–strange, even–without falling prey to the cliché of the self–pitying social misfit? Diversity might be considered in terms of economic or geographical background, life experiences, religion, sexual orientation, and even personal interests and general outlook. In this respect, my Goth identity contributes a perspective that is far different from the mainstream. That doesn't even begin to address a living arrangement full of rules and regulations. When the two options are equally as affordable, the next step is to consider other factors in making your decision. • 70. Persuasive Essay On Banning Campus Violence Banning Campus Violence The results of the illegal actions performed by the campus members lead to the increasing number of victims of the violence at campus. The paper investigates the necessity to elaborate the necessary measures and methods to stimulate the process of reducing and further banning of the violence on campus. The essence of this approach is on the reasons, which should motivate the education institutions' management to reduce the number of cases of violence on campus. Therefore, the essential measure to ban the campus violence is the establishment of the legal framework and controlling procedure over the students–members of the campuses as the cases of the violent actions have recently become frequent enough and lead to the negative consequences for the students' health and life. However, not all the scholars have a conviction that there is a need to fight for the ban of violence on campuses. • 72. Multi Campus And Georgia Technical College The public institution selected for this research project is a nonprofit, multi–campus and Georgia's third–largest technical college based in Waco. The institution has an open admissions policy. It enrolls less than 7,000 students annually, in certificate, diploma, and associate degree programs. The highest degree offered at the institution is an associate degree. The student–faculty ratio is 18–to–1. The challenge for West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) is to design and implement effective retention strategies and programs for first–time students that monitor, encourage , and reward student retention using available resources and without burdening faculty and staff with cumbersome tracking and reporting procedures. While the limitations present an overwhelming task, the consequences of not solving the problem exceed any potential limitations. With these limitations in mind, the researcher's task is to find a workable solution. First–year retention rates involving higher education undergraduates during the previous several years have improved marginally even with various improvement efforts (Barefoot, 2000; Tinto, 2004). Large numbers of first–year students are exiting college due to unsatisfactory academic skills, failures to adapt both socially and academically, in addition to having an inadequate commitment to the objective of finishing college (Ishler & Upcraft, 2005; Tinto, 1987). The goal of this research project is to improve student retention by focusing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Despite their opinions, free speech was a great way in this situation for students to rally together and publically inform the rest of campus of their beliefs. In the school newspaper, The Daily Emerald, CJ Ciaramelle wrote "About 300 students from across the campus community – student unions, Greek Life, the ASUO, the Survival Center, the Women's Center – showed up at the meeting to protest the Forum" (1). Although the majority of people protested against the forum the right to free speech, it is important because it allows students to make decisions on their own and invite students to do the same. "Free speech" often has negative connotations because the negative outcomes are publicized more than the positive outcomes. 'Free Speech' is a time for individuals to express their beliefs and topic on an important issue. People chose to present themselves in a vast majority of ways such as, holding signs, making t–shirts, shouting, etc. People who chose to present themselves in disrupting ways such as, foul language, inappropriate attire are more likely to be noticed than another student that is holding a simple and respectful sign. Schmidt states, "Universities cannot censor or suppress speech, no matter how obnoxious in content, without violating their justification of existence" (2). There is no definition of what type of 'free speech' should be censored and not allowed. With that said, there should not be a limit on 'free speech' ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is my opinion that the lack of security and warning signs overlooked by administration is the chief problem as to how these crimes take place on campuses. Did campus security and school the administrations do enough to keep the students safe? Did fellow classmates and faculty members ignore warning signs of both Whitman and Seung–Hui? And what security changes have been implemented in the event of another unforeseen shooting? Since the Virginia Tech shootings, school campuses across America have repeatedly discussed campus safety ideas such as emergency responses and communications. Many colleges and universities have increased their security officers on campuses while also trying high tech security options (Saavedra). One of the high tech security measures many colleges are interested in using to alert their students is the mass text–message alerts in case of an emergency. This is a notification system that sends text message to students on their cell phones during a shooting, earthquake, bomb scare, or any other emergencies (Saavedra). Although this sounds like a very good security idea, most colleges don't have the money or resources to make this idea happen which means they are having to resort to just adding security officers to ride around campus on bicycles with loud speakers to spread the message during emergencies (Saavedra). Moreover, it is not uncommon for this student to represent the community college as an athlete; in keeping with traditional four–year colleges and universities, student athletes enjoy the benefit of housing as one prong of their athletic scholarship package, i.e. tuition, room and board. Other attributes include vast numbers of first–generation students, students of color, and full–time students. Perhaps the rationale behind the lack of on–campus housing offered at community colleges, which is in stark contrast to that of four–year colleges and universities, is the fact that a large number of community college students live in the community, or the urban community colleges are situated whereby students may make use of mass transit means to get back and forth. This is how the system has always been designed, a single–loop approach.
