The fairy tale informative speech discusses fairyland and the fairies that live there. Fairyland is described as a magical place filled with happiness and different types of fairies, including gardener fairies, teacher fairies, and musical fairies. The speech aims to explain the reason for summer dew using a story about a family of fairies that live in Fairyland.

Fairyland Speech Dew Reason
1. Fairyland Informative Speech
Have you ever wondered why there is dew on the grass in the summer? I'm gonna tell you a story
that is going to help you understand the reason for the summer dew. A long time ago, there was a
family of fairies who lived in a beautiful, mushroom home in a magical, faraway place called
Fairyland. There were thousands of beautiful fairies flying all around in this magical land and each
and every fairy had their very own daily job to do. Many different types of fairies existed in
Fairyland including gardener fairies, teacher fairies, cleaning fairies, musical fairies, and many
more. Fairyland was one of the most beautiful, magical, and happiest places on earth. The land was
full of nothing but happiness, and lovely attitudes from each and every

3. The Stone
In The Story of The Stone(紅樓夢) written by Cao Xue–qin, we can find another important function
of the dreams which is to reveal the destines of the characters. The Stone was later on translated as
The Dream of the Red Chamber. It could be understood that the whole fiction was describing a life
of dream from its name. In Chapter V: The spirit of Jia Baoyu visits the confines of the Great Void,
author set up a dream which Jia Baoyu dreamt that he went in to confines of the Great Void, and
meet God of the Great Void–the Fairy of Monitory Vision (Cao ChapterV). The Fairy of Monitory

Many scholars tried to identify each sentence to a specific person in the book so that this song could
reveal all the destines of the characters in the book. However, I think it would be a little bit
unreasonable since all the big families in the book finally fade. Thus, I think this song is more like a
general description of the end rather than a specific depiction. While we could still find some
specific depiction that we could be sure of: for example, we know that "those indebted for tears have
already (gone) to exhaust their tears" is Lin Dai–yu. The author used an image of birds flying back
to trees and left behind a void to depict the destines of the Jia's family, which later also come true in
the book where Jia's corrupted and everyone left the mansion. Jia's dream, as a clue to the final
resolution of the story, carried a foreshadowing to what would happen in following

5. How Does Shakespeare Use A Love Triangle In A Midsummer...
Within Shakespeare's A MidSummer Night's Dream, he uses a love triangle with many of the same
concepts seen among young teens today. Teenagers tend to have many love triangles. These triangles
tend to consist of two things, a childish attitude and the inconsistency of love. This inconsistency of
love leads to many problems. As the reader reads the story, he or she may notice a few things to
watch out for while growing around the realms of love.
Shakespeare revolves his play around four lovers who illustrate the complications often seen in
young love. In the story Hermia, Lysander and Demetrius are fighting over each other's love:
"Relent sweet Hermia and Lysander yield Thy crazed title to my certain right" (Shakespeare 13).
Lysander and Demetrius are trying to convince Hermia to love one of them. Demetrius says ... Show

This is very often seen among young teens today, some may call it the controlling relationship.
Hermia has an old friend, Helena. When Helena found out that Demetrius was in love with Hermia
she was very upset: "The more I love, the more he hateth me" (Shakespeare 21). The reader may
notice that Helena's problem is that Demetrius is in love with Hermia but Helena wants Demetrius
to love her. This shows that love from this time to today has stayed the same because the characters
in the story are unsure of who they love. Love is special when you are a teen. Teenagers are still
trying to find the true meaning. Within the midst of all that is going on, There is King Oberon and
Queen Titania. Although they are married, King Oberon seems to not understand the concept of
loyalty: "Then I must be thy lady. But I know when thou hast stolen away from Fairyland, and in the

7. The Use Of Animal Imagery In Fairyland
More generally, animal imagery stresses the dark and frightening elements of Fairyland. When
Titania is about to rest in the woods, her fairies perform a soliloquy or lullaby, to ward off any vile
creatures that would wish to harm Titania, and to make her feel safe.
"You spotted snakes with double tongue,
Thorny hedgehogs, be not seen;
Newts and blindworms, do no wrong,
Come not near our Fairy Queen.
(II, ii, 9–12).
Weaving spiders, come not here;
Hence, you long–legged spinners, hence!
Beetles black, approach not near;
Worm nor snail, do no offense.
(II, ii, 20–23).
Blindworms, snakes, newts, spiders and beetles are all insects and animals that terrify or disturb the
average human. Some humans keep hedgehogs as pets, thus lowering their scare factor, yet the
'thorny' description reminds the reader of their potential for harm and danger. Both Fairyland and its
creep creatures have the potential for deception and evil or can be harmless and lighthearted. The
key words of "double tongue" and "be not seen," are especially troublesome as this hints that the
terrifying animals of the human world that are not usually seen are present in this world. The animal
imagery in this passage depicts a creepier Fairyland that is more of a nightmare than a dream.
Oberon matches the harsh and creepy descriptions of the fairies when he wishes that Titania fall in
love with an undesirable creature. He suggests a "cat or bear," a "boar with bristled hair," or "some
vile thing" (II, ii,

9. Fairy Lore In Clap Your Hands If You Believe
By the same token, the episode "Clap Your Hands if You Believe" (S.6, Ep.9), explores fairy lore
further. In this episode, Sam and Dean once again travel to Indiana in order to investigate
disappearances and claims of UFO sightings. Upon Sam and Dean's arrival in the town, the audience
is introduced to a scene reminiscent of X–Files, where local witnesses and townspeople recount
their alien abductions and their experiences. The father of the first abductee is Mr. Brennen a
traditional watchmaker that tells the boys, he is sure he'll never see his son again as the seventy–

human, which is a common feature of fairies: they can be either a few feet tall and look relatively
like humans or appear as normal humans (see plate 3.). Dean is attacked by a fairy whilst in jail for
attacking a human suffering from dwarfism. Upon my first viewing of the episode, it was assumed
that the attacker was a fairy solely based on the fact that only Dean was able to see him. It was not

Ender only kills/fights to protect himself. Like with Bonzo and Stilson no one can say that they did
not start the fight. Especially with Bonzo because he wanted Ender dead. Ender just wanted to end
the fight, so he ended that fight and all the ones after it by doing what he did. Ender was tricked into
killing off an entire species. When Ender realizes what just happened, that he killed not only the
army but the children of the biggers, he is horrified at what he has done. "I didn't want to kill them
all. I didn't want to kill anybody! I'm not a killer! You didn't want me, you bastards, you wanted
Peter, but you made me do it, you tricked me into it!"(Ch.14, Pg.391)(Excuse the language it is a

Ender is a good child. Graff is very enthusiastic about Ender and rarely ever has something bad to

13. Feminism In A Midsummer Night's Dream
Shakespeare may be the most known playwright of all time, however, you may be surprised at how
many unfair stereotypes this very famous writer incorporated into his plays. A Midsummer Night's
Dream is a comedy play written by William Shakespeare in the late 1500s that portrays events
surrounding the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to the extravagant Hippolyta, the former
queen of the Amazons. Such events included Demetrius jilting Helena at the altar and falling in love
with Helena's rival instead, Hermia. However, Hermia is in love with Lysander, not a disdainful
youth known as Demetrius. According to feminist theory, the theory that focuses on gender
inequality. A Midsummer Night's Dream would not be considered a feminist empowerment play
because throughout the play Shakespeare portrays women as timid/easily frightened. He shows men
having more power than women, and perpetuates the unfair stereotype that all women must act a
certain way.
Firstly, A Midsummer Night's Dream is a feminist disempowerment play is because women are
repeatedly portrayed as easily frightened. For example, "If you roar to ferociously, you'll scare the
duchess and the other ladies and make them scream," (AMND, 1.2.29). Quince is saying that the
ladies in the audience and Hippolyta, the queen of the Amazons, a woman who hunted a bear with
Hercules, will be afraid of an actor dressed as a lion saying ROAR. In addition, Quince only directs

1. What is the most interesting event in this book? I think the most riveting part of this book was
when September got to the Lonely Gaol and experienced all the events at the end. Most of the book
leads up to the end, and many things were confusing until then. In the end, everything connected and
made sense, and I love when that happens. The way September made the raft to sail across the sea
was amazing, and the "people" and things she met were fascinatingly creative. She figured out that
the Marquess was actually Good Queen Mallow by peeling away the plaque and seeing it read Maud
Elizabeth Smythe instead of September and then making the ties between Maud and the Marquess. I
thought that the ending was the most intriguing and spectacular part of the book.
2. What is the major problem in this book? September's journey in this book had many hardships,
but there were actually two that really stood out in my mind. One of the main conflicts was
September going to get the Marquess sword in return for Goodbye's spoon. This was a main conflict
because it was such a big problem for her; she encountered many trials to her friends and her own
self. The second main conflict, which was slightly more significant, came after her first problem.

19. Keats And The Fall Of Hyperion Essay
In the description of historiographies and social theories in the longer poems of John Keats,
Kathleen Béres Rogers argues in "John Keats and the Ideas of the Enlightenment" that the
"sociological drive of [Keats's] poetry is an inheritance from the Enlightenment" (Rogers, 2012, p.
163). Here Fermanis tried to trace Keats's working both with and against of Enlightenment legacy
and in particular of its progressive, linear model of history. Keats's narrative provoked from a
savage, feudal society to an emphasis on sensation and feeling. Endymion was indebted much to the
Enlightenment and he used his sensitivity in order to sympathize with human suffering. He found

He wrote that Christine Gallant revealed the influence of faery myths and traditions on the final days
of Keats: "In Rome, Severn linked together candles so that as one burned down another was lit"
(Mckenna, 2009, p. 180). Keats was in hallucination so he thought that a faery had lit the candles
and he wished "that his grave be covered with daisies" (180). The flower daisy had been considered
a sun–symbol which had the power to protect against the faeries. After this, Gallant knew the spirit
of Keats's belief in the supernatural and particularly in Celtic Romanticism. For Keats supernatural
stood side–by–side with Classical myths as a tool in his poetry. However, the Celtic elements better
represented Keats's spirituality beliefs than the Greek and Roman myths. He used it both as an anti–

21. Edgar Allen Poe's Annabel Lee
Happily N'Ever After "Annabel Lee" was the last complete poem of Edgar Allan Poe, published
sometime after his mysterious death in 1849. The poem, much like many of his other works, is about
a young woman named Annabel Lee, with whom the speaker is in love with and who tragically dies.
Poe had a lot of women die in his life, and though it is unclear who the poem is about, it has been
interpreted to be about his wife Virginia, who had died young. He places blame on the angels for
Annabel's death, who appear to be his foes instead of the friendly beings they are commonly
portrayed as. The speaker proclaims his undying love for Annabel, who is separated from him by
several different forces, by using imagery, symbolism, and dreamlike diction. ... Show more content

The opening line, "It was many and many a year ago" (1), mirrors the "Once upon a time" line many
fairytales employ. The phrase "In a kingdom by the sea" (2) is repeated four times in the poem; the
word "kingdom" conjures an image of a castle, a common backdrop for fairytales. This image is
upheld throughout the poem by the repetition of this phrase. Poe's choice of diction places the story
in a romantic setting, intensifying the love they have for each other, which is much like the love that
princes and princesses have for each other in those stories. Their love reflects the "true love" that
has become a staple of fairytales, and it is so strong that the speaker still harbors these feelings
toward her. The fairyland setting serves to reinforce the ardent love these two have, making

23. Theme Of Animal Imagery In A Midsummer Night's Dream
An animal is any "living organism other than a human being" (OED). When the definition of
animals directly divides them from humankind, examples of half–human, half–animal creatures are
meaningful yet complicated symbols. A Midsummer Night's Dream plays with the mystical and
supernatural by frequently breaking down the barriers between animals and humans. Fairies are
neither human nor animal, and they live in a world, Fairyland, which is separate from and invisible
to humans. Considering the definition of animal is anything that is not human, the world of fae is
unconsciously rooted in animalistic imagery. This world is also home to other half–human creatures
such as satyrs, centaurs, nymphs, mermaids and sprites. A Midsummer Night's Dream thus
highlights and breaks down the barriers between the human and non–human world, and with
seemingly little purpose. This essay will analyze the use of animal imagery, particularly through the
donkey and serpent, to argue that animal imagery intensifies the emotions of the play, from
exaggerating comedic elements to accentuating the dark and nightmarish aspects of Fairyland. To
provide some context, Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream interferes with love through the
deception of fairies. When Hermia's father insists she marry Demetrius, she runs away with Hermia
and Lysander. Contrastingly, Helena chases after an uninterested Demetrius, helplessly in love. The
fairies meddle with these two couples by accidentally casting a love

25. Stereotypes Of Women In The Elizabethan Era
Shakespeare argues that women are subjected to a different perception of the world that they live in,
and throughout the play, Shakespeare likes to poke fun, and question stereotypes of women in the
Elizabethan Era. For instance, Shakespeare had the character Helena, who decided to aggressively
pursue a man, which challenged the stereotype that all Elizabethan women were docile, and did not
chase after men. This is shown when Helena states "And even for that do I love you the more. I am
your spaniel. And, Demetrius, The more you beat me, I will fawn on you." This is significant
because it brings the conventional gender roles during the Elizabethan Era into question.

"The course of true love never did run smooth", Lysander had told Hermia. (1.1.136) In the play, "A
Midsummer Night's Dream" written by William Shakespeare, it is evident that the story is based on
love. To be more specific, love's difficult flaws. To be more specific the obstacles that love throws at
you. This essay will tell why the theme of this story is that The path of true love never runs
smoothly; there are always obstacles put in the way of true love. There are so many different
examples of this in the story. Hermia and Lysander's fight to stay together, Helena and Demetrius'
non–existing attachment and even Titania and Oberon's love mishap.
Firstly, Hermia and Lysander demonstrated this theory indicating the obstacles that come with true
love. After Egeus the father of Hermia shows how he is strongly against the love ... Show more

After all, the two lovers just wanted to be together, so much. That they'd risk their lives for one
another by courageously running away together, defying the law. No matter how strong the love

wall in the attempt to stop them from loving each other and have to fight their hardest to be together.
The two are immensely in love, yet aren't allowed to even be together. Instead, they are faced with
some strongly unbearable options.
In addition, Demetrius and Helena's love never ran the way they wanted and portrayed the
difficulties of love with their painful love encounter. Ever since Helena and Demetrius had ended
things between them due to Demetrius falling for Hermia, Helena has continued to be deeply in love
with Demetrius. Although Demetrius has no interest in Helena. "Do I entice you? Do I speak you

The polarization of the glorious images prior to the desolate lines describing the inside of the fairy
castle does not interrupt the rhyme of the lay. The pattern of rhyming couplets continues throughout
the lay maintaining the sing–song feel and allowing the reader to follow the lines easily.
Furthermore, the lyrical rhyme provides a counterpoint to the horrific imagery presented in the
excerpt. The author shows this in the rhyming couplet, "Sum stode withouten hade, / And sum non

Orfeo", she posits, "Further, the suspended animation of these victims, a feature of the Celtic fairy
world, is also a reminder of the 'altered state' under which the kingdom...operates while its king
prolongs his wilderness retreat" (301). While searching for Heurodis, Sir Orfeo undergoes a long
retreat into the wilderness until he sees her hunting with the group of fairy women. Throughout this
time, Sir Orfeo selects a steward to rule the kingdom in his place. Sir Orfeo regains his wife by
striking a deal with the king of the fairies. Disguised as a minstrel, he plays the harp for the king in
exchange for his wife. Once Sir Orfeo returns to his own kingdom, he decides to test the faithfulness
of his steward by dressing up as a beggar and returning to court. He recounts the story of his time in
the wilderness to the steward, "After the account of his own dismemberment and disfigurement,
Orfeo reconstitutes in this incantation, which returns him to 'life' and his kingdom's governance"

gives up the throne, proving his loyalty to the king and essentially restoring Sir Orfeo's life as king.

Titania, and Love: A Midsummer Night's Dream Interpretive Essay
(Word count: 1000)
The concept, and theme of love is thrown around a lot in literature, and Shakespeare's works are no
exception. 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' is an exceptional showcase of the mysterious emotion of
love, and this essay will be focusing on the theme of love surrounding Titania in particular. In this
play, the motivations and subsequent actions of Titania are explored and show how love can change
people and their relationships. In 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', the little Indian boy, who is being
taken care of by Titania, is a major source of conflict in Titania and Oberon's marriage. Oberon

enthrallèd to thy shape. // And thy fair virtue's force perforce doth move me // on the first view to

Titania was a love potion, which made her fall in love with the first person who she lays eyes on
when she awakes, who in this case, is Bottom, who has taken the form of an ass. Titania adds: "Thou
art as wise as thou art beautiful." (65) Which signifies that she either already has, or soon will fall in
love with Bottom. This quote is an example of dramatic irony. The next morning, when Titania
wakes up, she feels as if she's had a nightmare: "My Oberon! What visions have I seen! //
Methought I was enamour'd of an ass" (105). This quote demonstrates both exclamations, and
assonance. This quote tells us that the love potion used on Titania was not permanent, because it has

nature of both Jack and Parry's behavior. Although their behaviors are very different, both characters
are complex individual's that are often tough to follow. The movie portrays Jack's narcissistic

Schizophrenia in itself seems to be tolling enough on an individual, but without medication or a

the author writes, "I have trouble understanding and responding to people. I hear words, but they

43. What Is A Fairy Trip Essay
One sunny day, I found myself in a strange city on a mountain covered with something white and
cold. Everything started when I was reading a story about fairy creatures in a forest. While I was
reading, I wished to have a chance to go to the forest and met them. Unfortunately, when I wished
that, one of those fairy creatures achieved my wish. There was only one problem with that, and the
problem was that it is hard to go back home again. Thus, my journey trying to go back had started.
What I needed was a magician, who could give me the wishes box, and so, I would be able to go
home again. Luckily, I had my smartwatch, which could help me think of what to do. Pico, my
smartwatch, told me that the magicians from the Fairyland are brilliant enough to find a wishes box
for me. Thus, I set off to the Fairyland to find the most masterful magician in the world, Mr. Wise
Man.
Being there, I had a chance to see how fairies could live above all those years. I realized that those
creatures are clever although they are smaller than us. They worked hard to do their work and
organized everything. They traveled in magical crafts and lived in houses that could shrink to the
size of small capsules. So, they can hide from the human world. Their streets were astonishing as

47. How Does The Author Use Imagery In Herman Melville's Writing
Maggie Asman
Mrs. Sparks
AP Literature– Period 2
11 December 2014
The Works of Herman Melville
Embodying the qualities of an author during his lifetime, Herman Melville utilizes imagery in his
works in a quest to prove that nature is sublime and untamable. He was alive during the 1800's and
experienced the romantic era as a small child. His ideas were heavily influenced by the ideas of the
Romantics and the way they valued nature. Herman Melville was a very adventurous man and
starting when he was only twenty years old took his first sea voyage from New York City to
Liverpool. This voyage was the main influence in the publishing of his first novel, Redburn: His
First Voyage. Subsequently, he began to write more novels, short stories, and poems about his

included his personal knowledge about becoming independent and his growing individuality. This
concept of individuality was very popular in the Romantic Era and was clearly a large influence in
Melville's writing. He effectively used imagery to keep his stories interesting and understandable.
He brilliantly used this imagery to describe the fabulous phenomenon of nature and the individuality
of many characters. Some of Melville's numerous short stories include "Bartleby the Scrivener",
"The Piazza", "Benito Cereno," The Lightning–Rod Man," "The Encantadas," and "The Bell
Tower." All of these stories utilize extraordinary language infused with colorful imagery in

The world of fairy takes just as much time and effort to get over the loss of a loved one as our world.
The world of fairy takes the the form more of an allegory than a cure. Tolkien turned his grief into a
magical world full of monsters and obstacles to overcome to distract himself from the real
challenges he faced. He wasn't aware he was doing this and i think he held that ignorance to his
grave. For a better look at it we must look through the perspective of Sigmund Freud and his
philosophical concepts. I'm going to go into depth on two of his concepts as they are very fitting
with Tolkien's work and background. However there is the possibility that more than these two
possibly even all of Freud's concepts can be applied to Tolkien. The first concept being that of "The
unconscious mind", in which Freud believes our mind has three parts. The first level is
consciousness which consists of thoughts that are the currently occupying our mind. This is a very
basic concept it's essentially saying what you are currently thinking or in this case reading is your
conscious mind at work. The second level is the preconscious level, another simple concept as it is
simply your memory. What you did this morning, what you had for breakfast these are all examples
of the preconscious mind. The third level and the one we will be addressing is that of the

One would argue for the quote when Lysander says, "The course of true love never did run smooth."
This can be argued for with the large abundance of examples that were revealed throughout the play,
like when Lysander and Hermia's flame of love was trying to be extinguished by Egeus, Hermia's
father. Egeus desires for Hermia to wed Demetrius, but another aimlessly chases Demetrius with the
results ending in scorn, that is Helena. This overly complicated love story led them to the magical
forest where there already be two lovers whom love each other, though, they constantly feud, the
lovers are Oberon and Titania. In A Midsummer's Night Dream, Lysander says, "The course of true
love never did run smooth," and this is true because Lysander and Hermia are not allowed to love,
Helena aimlessly chases Demetrius with no results, and though Titania and Oberon are in love, they

think without the proper first principles goes mad..." In this quote, Chesterton describes how
difficult it is to think and interpret new information if you are not ready. He is explaining that if
someone takes in too much information that is too advanced, they may not respond to it very well.

One quote to describe this is, "He has always had one foot in earth and the other in fairyland." It
implies that the common man is content with seeing both worlds. Next, Chesterton uses the
metaphor, "He has permitted the twilight." This is describing that the mystic is allowing the
unknown in his life. The common man understands that he does not know everything, and accepts it.
This is what keeps him sane. He either does not want to learn everything, since it would make him
unhappy, or he is not aware of his ignorance. He is able to acknowledge the paradox, and not
question it. The people who choose to try and learn everything become insane. They are unable to

decision that everyone needs to make at some point. To learn too much and be unhappy, or be naive

The Influence of the Grimm Brother's Fairy Tales in Modern Society Imagine a young girl playing

However, not all fairy tales are innocent like Walt Disney created them to be for modern society. In
fact, most original fairy tales have gruesome and tragic plots such as the Gimms Brothers version of
Cinderella. Where her two step sisters cut a part their feet to fit the small glass slipper of Cinderella.

meanings that cannot be ignored and which people need to discover and appreciate. Zhang Zeduan's
masterpiece depicts the landscape of his hometown, Kaifeng and the life of its people during the

but in his version, the scenes are different to the original version. Compared to Zhang, Qiu Ying

69. Edgar Allan Poe Fairyland
Many of Edgar Allan Poe's works have made impacts upon how the world is viewed. Poe's works
create a more morbid outlook as opposed to that of intrigue and wonder. Poe's poem titled
"Fairyland" captures his amazing talents of perception with ease. As Poe explains his surroundings,
one can't help but feel a sense of becoming dwarfed by the surroundings. His explanation of the
outlook he is experiencing consists of his description of the ominous overcast of moonlight that falls
upon him and his surroundings. Poe's mastery of his imagery creates a tone of unknowingness and
morbidity that creates a theme of longingness for meaning and explanation of the world. Poe's poem
titled "Fairyland" effortlessly captures Poe's stance in the Romantic era of literature. Poe explains in
his poem that there are forms unable to be seen and creates a sense of the night passing ever–so–

The shift in imagery hints to a tone of slight optimism as he states in his poem that they are "Never–

Allan Poe" that Poe's poems are typically about sorrowful situations. She states that "beauty is in
them, most often dead beauty, love is there..." due to his seemingly depressed and longing view of
the world. It seems that Poe continues his typical poem setup throughout "Fairyland," but in a much
more intense manner. Poe places the reader in an environment that can be analogous to that of
lacking enlightenment and purpose. The reader seems to be seeing the landscape as it is with the
time passing slowly, with no reason for existence. The tone set by this sense of being lost in the

As innocent as they seem, from the cute fairytales of Cinderella and her submissive character to the
passionate story of Beauty and the Beast, a maiden who falls in love with a beast, the true meaning
that lies beneath the pretty shell delivers a different message to children. The idea of the
"traditional" role of women is constantly portrayed in many fairytales. Fairytales, although fantasy–
like, still resemble aspects of the world and throughout history, women were considered inferior to
men. "...it is a fair assumption that in a world dominated by men, the fairy tale reflects the world as
defined and organized by men..." (Oliver 86). Stories such as The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian

(Oliver 87). With the "loving father" and the "envious mother", the message sent to children can be
misleading and one–sided.
Another example of the "wicked step–mother" is illustrated in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
The innocent beauty, Snow White, and her feminine charms are similar to the common house wife
by doing chores around the house while maintaining a certain image of perfection and beauty. Her
step–mother is in "competition" with Snow White; activeness and power versus submissiveness and
obedience. "The competition between Snow white and the queen turns into a struggle for survival
between two halves of a single personality: passivity and tractability as opposed to inventive and
subversive activism." (Barzilai 520). Once again, another fairytale shows the rivalry which the
mother figure is set to destroy the daughter. The over–assertive woman (in this case, the queen) is
represented as an envious monster. "The queen is characterized throughout in unremittingly negative
terms: she is most often deemed "wicked", but she is also proud, overbearing, and envious."
(Barzilai 520). There are many examples in "Fairyland" which give a bad reputation towards the
step–mother or the mother figure.

73. In The Cask Of Amontillado, The Raven, And Annabel Lee
The unity of effect is all the elements in a story that channels the effect the author wants the
audience to experience. Therefore, to achieve the "unity of effect" in the Cask of Amontillado, The
Raven, and Annabel Lee, Poe used the elements of setting, alliteration, and unreliable narrator to
help elicit the unsettling mood in the audience.
For the sake of the "unity of effect", Poe uses setting for the purpose of conceiving a sinister mood.
As Montresor and Fortunato walked deeper into the catacombs in the Cask of Amontillado,
Montresor points out the trickling of the water on the bones. "We are below the river's bed. The
drops of moisture trickle among the bones." (Cask)The setting is under the surface of the earth, so
the audience associates it with with Hell because of the bones that lie around. The bones also make
the audience feel that the setting is eery and dangerous because it reminds them of death. This only
makes isolation and danger prominent factors in the setting. The mood becomes unpredictable and
treacherous, with a sense of fear and dread knowing that something bad will happen to the
characters who are away from safety. Under those circumstances, Poe controlled the audience's fear
and the diabolical mood using the dark setting.
Once again Poe uses the unity of effect to elicit this tense mood and draw out terror in the audience.
In The Raven, Poe used alliteration with the intention to build a suspenseful mood and dread in the
audience. The narrator of
