In Gledhill's and Schell's book, New Approaches to Resistance: In Brazil and Mexico, the topic of
different forms of resistance is mentioned among different groups of people. These groups had
different motivations and goals in achieving systematic social change to their local community. The
various resistance groups were made up of the poor, marginalized, working class, religious
minorities, and ethnic minorities. Moreover, these subaltern groups faced opposition from the
powerful elite, which consisted of the government, multinational corporations, wealthy landowners,
Catholic religious elite, and white European dominated institutions. However, these subaltern
groups used different forms of resistance that changes our perspective of what resistance really
means. The subaltern groups used violent, peaceful, covert, and unorganized forms of resistance to
achieve their goals.
The use of violent resistance by subaltern groups is the most common form of resistance when we
think about revolution and change. This form of resistance occurs when elite power structures are
attacked by the marginalized in society. In particular, the violent resistance movement led by Maria

impact on society today. If people around the world never acted in such a way as in a peaceful
resistance, it's possible that it would've taken a longer time for the world to form the society it has
today; because people would resist but not in a peaceful manner. I believe that before people had the
idea of a peaceful resistance and if people never took advantage of it in the past, that, that's when the

negative impact on society in such a way that physical resistance would. A physical impact leaves

peaceful resistance, one is not fighting back in any harmful way to themselves or others. As opposed
to a non peaceful resistance, people are simply putting their lives at risk for something they believe

have to rely heavily on support from the citizens. Guerilla warfare basically relies on one standard.
The element of surprise. Often, guerillas will not be in uniform and carry just a concealed weapon.

Fighting Back It is well known that six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust, and the
images of Jews being rounded up by the hundreds to be taken to concentration camps pervade what
we know about the Holocaust. One might assume then that there were few acts of resistance to this
inevitable fate. However, resistance took place within the ghettos throughout Europe as well as
within the concentration camps. In Poland, where anti–Semitism was rampant, there were organized
movements of resistance which took place in the ghettos and in the forests outside of the cities.
Thousands of Jews came together in what were known as partisan groups to sabotage German
military operations and help other Jews to escape from the ghettos. Harold Werner was a member of
one of these partisan groups who wrote a memoir entitled Fighting Back: a Memoir of Jewish
Resistance in WWII. He decided to write this memoir in part as a response to his children's
questions about why the Jews went "like sheep to the slaughter." It was important to Werner not just
to answer his children's questioning but to highlight for the world, both Jews and non–Jews, the
bravery displayed by the thousands of Jews who fought for their own lives and for the lives of other
Jews. Werner's memoir is important for this generation and those that follow to help us understand

During the 1960s, Martin Luther King Jr. led African Americans in peaceful demonstrations in
hopes that he could end racial inequality. Through peaceful resistance, Martin Luther King was able
to win the support of even whites, including Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Prior to his death,
President Kennedy had hoped to initiate civil rights legislation; however, his early death left
everything in President Johnson's hand, who pushed for what would become the Civil Rights Act of

define all the terms involved in classifying groups as freedom fighters. Once these concepts are

basis for classifying groups as terrorists or freedom fighters. The classical definition of a freedom
fighter according to the Miriam–Webster Dictionary is "a person who takes part in a resistance

definition does not state what type of resistance is involved: it does not require the resistance to by
