Kath Fisher Critical Reflection
Joy Woods Kath Fisher "Critical Self–Reflection" Article Summary Most everyone has the general
knowledge that critical self reflection is an important tool for self actualization. But just what is
critical self reflection and how can we apply it to our lives? It is this need for knowledge that Kath
Fisher addresses in her article "Critical Self–Reflection". Throughout the article, Fisher highlights
several main points, the definition of critical reflection and its distinguishing features, the difference
between values, beliefs, and assumptions, and strategies and techniques on how critical reflection
can be improved. Fisher first starts out by giving an in–depth look at the word reflection and
characteristics of reflective beings. She directly

Select one of the following questions and answer it in 200 to 300 words using the principles of
critical thinking you learned in this course. How can we reduce poverty in the United States? Will
receiving a college degree improve your career opportunities? Has the United States peaked as a

Reflection Paper On Critical Thinking
Critical Thinking – Self Reflection The concept of critical thinking was something I had never heard
of until I began my journey to obtain my degree. I never realized that every time I was faced in
making a decision, there was a purpose or goal that was attached to that decision. Looking back at
decisions I have made in the past, I have to wonder, did I stop and think through the issues? Did I
identify, evaluate, comprehend, analyze and resolve the problem? I am certain in the early stages of
my career; I made decisions based on emotions. Some would even say I was a bit of a hot head.
However, through the years, I have found that even though I may not have known I was critically
thinking, I was definitely doing so. Moreover, gaining additional techniques through this course will
only evolve my critical thinking abilities and lend a hand in furthering my career. My Life as a
Critical Thinker Describe the role that critical thinking plays in your life today. The role of critical
thinking plays a significant role in my life professionally as well as personally. As a Credit Manager

ENGL 501: Great Works of Ancient Literature (Fall 2016)
Through this course I developed a deeper comprehension of ancient literature. I studied the works of
Homer (The Iliad) and Plato (Republic) as well as Greek lyric poetry (Archilochus and Sappho). My
personal takeaways included a more contextual understanding of how the ancient Greeks conceived
of literature, viewing it as a means of historical preservation as well as a tool to build psychological
and philosophical understanding. Moreover, I came to recognize the more 'practical' or 'utilitarian'
purpose of literature that Ancient societies employed. Likewise, I benefited from the acquaintance
with new argumentative material to share with my secondary students. The background knowledge
of Homer and Plato have provided a springboard for me to build stronger discursive discussions in
my own classroom.
ENGL 525: Studies in the Short Story (Fall 2016)
A deeper conception of what constitutes a short story is what I anticipated when signing up for this
course. Yet, while I did gain knowledge of the components of a short story, I also took away a
wealth of insight on how to take apart, discuss, and synthesize new ideas from reading short stories.
The short story is the medium that most of high school and undergraduate students begin to read
what is considered literature. Therefore, I found this course to be a vital asset to both my
professional and pedagogical development. We read and discussed a wide range of texts with a

Critical Thinking Reflection Paper
Most elementary, middle, and high schools use the phrase 'critical thinking' very loosely.
Textbooks typically use this term to label discussion questions, but, in my experience, teachers have
never used this as an opportunity to encourage real critical thinking. In fact, before I joined this
class, I had gone through eleven years of schooling without ever being told what those two little
words mean. I always assumed that I had good critical thinking skills, just because I'm smart. After
less than a month in this class, I realize that critical thinking is much more complicated than just
being intelligent. Critical thinking is defined as "deliberate, fair, open– minded, rational examination
of the basis of concepts, beliefs, and arguments." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
11). So, by definition, fallacious thinking hinders your ability to be happy. Thinking critically can
help you start to recognize these fallacies and prevent them, leading to a more rational thought
process, and, in turn, a happier life. In this paper, I'm going to explain a few of the reasons that
thinking rationally is so crucial to leading a happy life, as well as analyze a few types of fallacies to
demonstrate why they are detrimental to your happiness.
Thinking critically and rationally is a very important part of being happy, because the way you think
greatly affects your perception of reality by shaping the way you see the world, your feelings and
emotions, and even how you behave (Cohen, p.9). In other words, your view of reality isn't just
given to you; it's molded by the way you think. Learning to detect and prevent fallacies in your own
life helps ensure that your view on reality itself isn't skewed, leading to a better understanding of
others around you and to a happier life. Thinking critically is an essential part of preventing
fallacies, but it can't really work unless you first learn to understand what a fallacy is and why it can
be so harmful to your happiness. Since I have no real way of knowing which fallacies are committed
more often by you or anyone else, I will draw from my own experience to explain which fallacies I
notice myself falling victim to most often and explain the ways in

Critical Thinking Reflection
W233 helped shape my writing and critical thinking by reframing my concept of what constitutes a
good piece of writing. Prior to this course, I thought that a good paper consisted of an argument
supported with solid word choice and consistent organization throughout to guide the reader through
each paragraph. My thoughts at this time were more focused the "what" of an argument, but I
learned that in order to write a great paper–especially one that involves mediating an argument–it is
equally important to focus on the "how" and "why" of the argument. By this I mean that explaining
a point of view on an issue does not result in good argumentation or negotiation, but instead fully
understanding how the benefits and drawbacks affect all facets ... Show more content on

My best peer reviews came on this paper because they provided me with feedback the gave me
some good pointers and made me more confident in my ability to negotiate an argument effectively.
In addition to the negotiation/mediation paper, I felt very confident in my abstract because it
allowed me to use some of my scientific and technical writing skills, which I would argue are rather
strong skills given my background as a biology major. Looking at some of my other works, my
rhetorical analyses both allowed me to dive into the beef of my topic a little bit more. However,
looking back, my second rhetorical analysis was one of my weaker writings and I provided a better
analysis in my first rhetorical analysis. Although I do not feel quite as confident in the second
rhetorical analysis, both writings improved my analytical writing skills, and both assignments–along
with the annotated bibliography–were paramount in helping me understand how to approach my
paper. Out of all of papers I wrote in this class, my worst paper was the reflection. The reflection
paper prompt allowed me to write a very open–ended paper; no strict guidelines (other than usual
length and formatting requirements) limited my possibilities of what to write. In this regard, I would
suggest that writing this paper was a pretty simple task. However, at times I found it difficult to
escape beyond the surface of my discussion. It took more concentration to break through

It has been three months now since I joined this informative class of Critical Thinking and therefore,
it's time to get prepared for the final exams because this is the second last week of the semester. I

headed for my class. On my first day, I had to go to school early in order to get enough time to walk
around the whole building and get a good orientation of my class since it was my first day of class. I
arrived twenty minutes early and lucky enough, my class was not far from where I had parked my
car. I entered the building and headed upstairs where the classrooms from number 200–250 were
upstairs. I so excited when I meet with fellow classmates waiting outside our classroom number

first session. The class was cool and calm, everybody was eagerly waiting for the introduction for
the new subject. Mr. Beltran immediately asked the class, "what is critical thinking?" everybody

Critical Thinking Reflection
Critical thinking is something that we uses all the time in our everyday lives. I use critical thinking
every day in my school work, in my job working as a caterer, and, as funny as this may sound, when
I play games. In the future, critical thinking will be a crucial part of my profession in emergency
medical services when it will be my job to figure out what is going on with a patient and provide
them with the treatment that they need based on how they are presenting to me. Every day in my
studies as a student, I have to use critical thinking in my class and homework. In my Emergency
Medical Technician training class and in this class I have to determine what information is important
and what information is not. This class has given me a better understanding of critical thinking and
has helped me better analyse material that I have to read. I have learned that the quantity of material
that you process in colleges often dwarfs what students are given in high school. Inevitably, the
more material you have to sift through, the more critical thinking you have use to pick out what is
really important and what is not. A great example of this is the textbook for my Emergency Medical
Technician class. That textbook is over twelve–hundred pages long and contains dozens of charts
and lists of information that I will need to be able to recall when I am acting in the field. Critical
thinking has helped me figure out what information is the most vital for me and the importance of

Essay on Critical Thinking/Reflection
Assessing both critical thinking and the reflection process in learning, these aspects are both
intertwined. Without one, you cannot have the other. With the use of critical thinking and reflection
this thought process allows us to analyse, assess, evaluate, learn and develop arguments. However
this can have a twofold affect in the learning process. The learning process means taking many
aspects and perspectives into account to establish an argument. Critical thinking draws on questions
such as: how, what, when, why and who to determine the quality of an argument and also the
credibility. Although without critical thinking a conclusion cannot be drawn. Barriers to critical
thinking must also be questioned, whether these are: doubt, ... Show more content on

(Cottrell, Stella, 2005) states "poor criticism can result from making judgment based on too general
an overview of the subject matter." When developing an argument one must be careful not to make
false or unfair assumptions and always look for alternative points of view. Doing this allows you to
analyse and evaluate and make a more informed decision about an argument. Arguments are about
reviewing, speculating and assessing. As a result of doing this, a line of reasoning can be established
and conclusions made. Barriers such as critiquing an argument can have a positive effect in critical
thinking and the learning process as it allows a person to question everything. One must also be
careful when developing an argument and using the critical thinking skills not to make
generalisations and jumping to a conclusion. Critical thinking is the skill of thinking about your own
thinking and perspectives.
Critical questioning is an important part of the critical thinking process. Questioning how, what,
when, why and who are all essential parts to evaluate and analyse a quality of an argument. By
doing this it allows deeper thought and allows you to find an argument. This is described through
(Dwyer, Judith, 2009) stating that critical thinking is: "purposeful, self–regulatory judgement that
occurs when an issue is raised, a problem needs to be solved, opinions are reconsidered or
experiences carefully reflected upon." With

Theory And Practice Of Critical Reflection In Nursing...
It is essential for nurses to reflect on their practice to extend their skills in critical reflection and
maintain a contemporary multicultural environment. Critical reflection discloses individual's notion
about themselves, people and the workplace. Problem solving and decision making are used to help
improve and transform nursing practice. The essay will examine the theory and practice of critical
reflection and its benefits attained by nurses. The essay will also encapsulate the strategies that
nurses can use to reflect on experiences and the ramification of failing to reflect during practice.

Journaling is one of the strategies that can enable nurses to reflect on their experience (Jasper,
Rosser & Mooney, 2013). Wood (2013) stated when an individual pens their thoughts and
experiences; it enables them to understand better, appreciate and gives an insight of individuals
perception. Journaling helps nurses to relief stress, frustration and gives them to reflect on events
and enables them to develop goals and professional development pathways (Garrity, 2012).
Journaling develops nurse's self–awareness, skills in observation, recollection, experience
evaluation and integration of current and new knowledge (Garrity, 2012). Receiving feedback from
colleagues is another strategy that enables nurses to reflect on their practice and gain new
knowledge, skills and help individuals to make effective goals to improve on their practice (Bold,
2008). Furthermore, formal frameworks can also provide guidance on reflective thinking, for
example Gibbs reflective Cycle helps nurses to critically think on events, become proactive and
develop autonomous clinical and professional practice (Jasper, Rosser & Mooney, 2013). Thus
journaling, formal framework and peer support are all strategies that nurses can use to reflect

Reflection Paper On Critical Thinking
My original thoughts on Critical Thinking were that it requires learned skill and self–reflection. I
felt that it is impossible to think critically while ignoring the flaws in your thought processes. Logic
is imperative to investigate the motive behind any critical response. I theorized being vested in the
outcome can often prejudice an opinion which skews the result. Most often, putting our own
experiences in what we learn is acceptable, even encouraged, after we have applied a critical eye to
the issue. As students, we will need to remember to think logically, to research and make an in depth
study of each article, fact, theory, or question.
The article I chose changed my mind up to a point. The author posits that engaging in learning
encourages a more robust experience and a better outcome. In her class, she holds a seminar called
"The Last Class" in which she involves the students in not only critiquing the course but also
eliciting suggestions to improve it for future students. (Bleicher, 2011).
I enjoyed reading the different tactics she employed to elicit student involvement, and while they are
simple, they appeared effective. The entire experience is about participation and improvement. The
students respond to a list of topics: Readings, Units, Writing, Activities, Suggestions, Favorites,
Advice, Big Questions, Films, Media, Future. The course specific items would not apply to every
situation, but in general, it's an inclusive list. Some of the tactics she used that struck me the most:
1. She gave the markers to the shyest student, instructing the others to get their markers from that
student, who was then actively involved.2. Using music that did not appeal to the students to get
them to supply a list of "better" choices.3.Particularly, the idea of putting up pages with a simple
word (or two) to which the students could respond, taking notes or ideas from others.(Bleicher,
2011)
By the time I was done reading the article I had completely changed my mind about interactive
learning. I now feel that it is a complementary way to learn and become involved, which will help
reinforce learning by awakening a hunger for knowledge.
The student who sent the author the following message summed up the reason for

Reflection Upon A Critical Incident Essay
This paper will reflect upon and explore a critical incident which occurred whilst attending a clinical
placement. Reflective practice has become very popular over the last few decades throughout a
variety of professions. In some professions it has become one of the defining features of
competence. The wide spread utilization of reflective practice is due to the fact that it 'rings true'
(Loughran, 2000). Within different disciplines, what is understood by reflective practice varies
considerably (Fook et al, 2006). Despite this, some agreement has been achieved. In general,
reflective practice is understood as the process of learning through and from experience towards
gaining new insights of self and/or practice (Boud et al 1985; ... Show more content on

The model encourages the person to think systematically about and experience or activity and
allows the opportunity to recognise areas that can be improved upon or developed. The model takes
the form of a cycle, which uses a six step approach covering a description, feelings, analysis,

example, was due to its clear structured cycle which allows the opportunity to renter a stage in order

Critical Reflection Vs Evidence Based Practice
Critical reflection is a very important concept that is growing as an emerging intervention within
social work. Unfortunately, with new emerging concepts comes the debate of its effectiveness and
validity within the social work profession. For example, evidence–based practice emerged into the
social work profession over to decades ago and is one of the prevailing social work paradigms that
is still being considered an intervention that needs to be fully incorporated into practice. However,
when comparing the two interventions, there are many similarities and differences that should be

Critical reflection. What do we really mean?
Patricia Lucas
Auckland University of Technology (and PhD student Deakin University)
Do we really know what critical reflection means in the context of work–integrated learning, more
specifically cooperative education? Critical reflection, in some form, is located within many higher
education programmes, including cooperative education and many educators would say this is
important for in–depth student learning. It is a form of reflection that is complicated as well as
challenging for the learner and the educator. It would appear that there is a lack of consensus
regarding the definition of critical reflection, as it is difficult to define and your definition may

Guidelines in the literature on how to determine, facilitate and assess critical reflection in practice
appear to be limited (Leijen et al., 2011; Smith, 2011).
Models of critical reflection
This vast area in the literature, which explores models of critical reflection, lacks clarity. There
seems to be similarities within and across the various applications from many fields or disciplines of
education that may have little or no areas of overlap (Fook & Gardner 2007). Many models of
reflection based on a philosophical approach, may be considered to assist students develop an
understanding of critical reflection. These have been briefly outlined in table 1.0 to help visualize
the relationship between the models and frameworks. The framework chosen to guide students'
reflections may be determined by the expectations of the learning outcomes. Some models of
reflection may not encourage critical reflection. Models may guide the process of reflection but
should not impose a prescription of what reflection is. It is not essential to follow a model and some
practitioners choose not to. There is some criticism of models that reduce reflection to levels but this
approach maybe useful for teaching what the focus of reflection entails. The student may choose
whether or not to adopt a model to frame their reflection as a temporary measure until confidence in
the reflective activity is gained and understood.

Reflection On Critical Reflection
Introduction Critical reflection is the process of probing our thoughts, feelings, and experiences in
order to understand how they fit in with the ideas, concepts, and theories that are presented by others
(Ryerson University, 2016). On the other hand, reflective practice is the cornerstone of critical
analysis to construct meaning. As Brookfield (1998) stated, "critically reflective practice is a process
of inquiry involving practitioners in trying to discover, and research, the assumptions that frame
how they work" (p.197). In this paper, I will shed light on my personal critical reflection practice,
how it helped me succeed in my higher education studies, and how critical reflection benefited me
as a student and an individual.
Critical Reflective Practice
In my workplace, critical reflection is not practiced formally nor is it visible. I think it is due to the
ever–changing nature of management, unstable work environment, and lack of time. However, I
have practiced critical reflection in my higher education studies and in this paper I will focus on
that. Critical reflection is mainly structured around inquiry and my undergraduate program was
developed around problem–based learning. In addition, both individual and collective reflection
activities were incorporated into the courses to assist us (learners) to practice our critical reflection.
At first, I found it really hard to grasp the concept, but soon I realized that critical reflection is the

Reflection On Critical Thinking
Critical Thinking and Reading Reflections Some people say that critical thinking is a difficult thing
to do, but for me it is quite easy. Before taking this reading class, I have never "thought about my
thinking" before. I am the type of person to contemplate everything, no matter if it is for a purchase,
a decision, or even about what to eat. The book Learning to Think Things Through, has showed me
tips to think more critically. In chapter one, I learned what critical thinking was and how to utilize it.
Richard Paul once said that, "critical thinking is thinking about your thinking, while you're thinking,
in order to make your thinking better." In my opinion, this quote was the best definition of critical
thinking in the book. It clearly states the definition of critical thinking. The first chapter has also
taught me steps to use while thinking critically. It taught me the three parts of thinking critically:
asking questions, answering the questions by reasoning them out, and then believing the results of
our reasoning. The most essential tips I learned was learning the critical thinking questions, the
importance of negative feedback, and the SEE–I technique. Through my eyes, the second chapter
was less informative than the first chapter. Even though I didn't learn as much, the chapter went into
more depth than the first. Chapter one covered critical thinking very broadly. In chapter two Nosich
goes deeper into the concepts of the elements of reasoning. The first main

Critical Thinking Self Reflection. The Human Thought Process

The human thought process is one that most people repeat dozens if not hundreds of times an hour.
Many people don't contemplate how this process works, they just process one thought after another
to make decisions, solve problems, or process a fond memory. Examining and strengthening the
thought process improves decision making abilities which enables a person to make better, more
informed choices. This essay will analyze where I personally am in my development as a critical

As I have grown older, critical thinking has become a much larger part of my life and much more
complicated because there is much more on the line. I have a family now with a wife and two
children, along with a full–time job that demands well thought out solutions that produce results.
Age has also given me the empathy and ability to better see things from another perspective,
something I did not when I was younger. I have found having the humility and foresight to ask for
outside opinions to be one of the most valuable tools in the decision–making process.
Further strengthening my critical thinking skills will not only further enhance my ability to make
sound decisions and reason through the issues and decision I make, but will help me to meet the
goals that I have set for my future. One of these goals is to impress upon my children the importance
of critical thinking, especially gathering all of the facts before making a decision. My career goals in
IT Management will also benefit from the application of these methods. In this field, as in many
others, a poor decision can be costly or even fatal to a business. As Smith (2003) points out,
"effective thinking is a key to management success, being implicated in virtually every task or
function managers perform".

Outcome 3 : Critical Reflection
OUTCOME 3 – CRITICAL REFLECTION Outcome 3 deals with the ability to formulate complex
and persuasive arguments with stakes that matter. By being aware of and responding to differing
points of view, as well as carefully and thoroughly analyzing evidence, Outcome 3 focuses on using
inquiry to develop and drive a position. Moreover, Outcome 3 stresses the importance of
understanding the consequences of an argument and how it plays a part in present day contexts.
Lastly, similar to Outcome 1, Outcome 3 addresses carefully crafting an argument to be appropriate
for a given audience and situation. For this outcome, I will be using MA #1 (Using a Theoretical
Concept to Analyze an Issue) for my showcase piece. Major Assignment #1 consisted of selecting an
environmental issue and one of the theoretical concepts discussed in class, and using the theoretical
concept as a lens in which to explore the chosen environmental issue. For my specific paper, I
selected to focus on the issue of urbanization and urban sprawl, while using Leopold's concept of a
land ethic as my lens. In this paper, my thesis statement is complex, illustrated by my admittance of
how "the topic of urbanization and urban sprawl is complex and difficult to navigate" (MA #1, 1). At
the same time, my claim is specific and nuanced as I state, "what is clear is that as cities continue to
enlarge and innovate to please its citizens, the environment must also be taken into account as part
of the cities' community" (MA #1, 1). Moreover, in my revised draft, I add an additional sentence to
clarify early on the stakes present in argument and paper: "Without such awareness, the environment
is put in a position of peril, and prolonged irresponsibility will perpetuate the irreversible damage
placed on the land that many call home" (MA #1, 2). As demonstrated here, my argument in this
paper is complex and contains stakes that matter; therefore, I believe that I am meeting Outcome 3.
Additionally, after each piece of evidence present in my paper, I continue on to analyze the text and
explain the importance of my chosen evidence. For example, after presenting the evidence of how
thousands of schools in rural China have been closed, and the newly gained funds

Reflection Paper On Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is a confusing and misunderstood topic. The best way to learn about critical
thinking and what it is, is by looking through examples of critical thinking. From its definition to
everyday life, to how critical thinking has changed the world there are examples of critical thinking
all around us. Definition of Critical Thinking Critical thinking is a process of learning and exploring
information with the most comprehensible, objective and considerate viewpoint. Observing,
Evaluating and researching data is the first step in critical thinking. That data is then studied, applied
and then evaluated which is a part of the reflection process of critical thinking. Critical thinking was
defined in depth by the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking in 1987. A statement
was made by Michael Scriven and Richard Paul in which they described critical thinking as: "the
intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing,
synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from or generated by, observation, experience,
reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. In its exemplary form, it is
based on universal intellectual values that transcend subject matter divisions: clarity, accuracy,
precision, consistency, relevance, sound evidence, good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness." It
was also mentioned that critical thinking involved examination of structures, the problem at

Reflection On Critical Thinking
It is been three months now since I joined this informative class of Critical Thinking and therefore,
it's time to get prepared for the final exams because this is the second last week of the semester. I
choose to register for this class Critical thinking although I didn't know what it entails. I did it out
the believe that I was going to get some good education out of it. The class is scheduled twice a
week, i.e Monday and Wednesday. Our class consist of Twenty students and Mr. Julian Beltran is in
charge of the class as our Instructor. It was a chilly morning on a Monday and I got ready and
headed for my class. On my first day, I had to go to school early in order to get time to walk around
the whole building and get a good orientation of my class since it was my first day of class. I arrived
twenty minutes early and lucky enough, my class was not far from where I had parked my car. I
entered the building and headed upstairs where the classrooms from number 200–250 were upstairs.
I so excited when I meet with fellow classmates waiting outside our classroom number 212. Within
a very short time, Mr. Beltran arrived and he ushered into the classroom for the very first session.
The class was cool and calm, everybody was eagerly waiting for the introduction for the new
subject. Mr. Beltran immediately asked the class, "what is critical thinking?" everybody stared at
him trying to think about the question. To make matters worse, we we were not allowed as a class to

Brookfield Critical Reflection
One thing that was really emphasized in this class is critical reflection. According to Brookfield
critical reflection is "the process of analyzing, reconsidering and questioning experiences within a
broad context of issues". This is necessary for anyone working in a people centered job or in human
services. Critical reflection allows us to tackle our assumptions and actions and address where this
comes from. There are 3 different phases of the critical reflection process. The first is
deconstruction. This is where we take the case or moment apart, this where we deconstruct our
attitudes surrounding the circumstances. The next step is resistance and challenge. This is where we
ask why and what this means. The last step is reconstruction. In this step we put together everything
that we have learned from this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before actively learning about critical reflection, I did not understand how important it is to develop
this skill. With my previous work in SDMA or as a mentor, I did complete some type of critical
reflection but it was more large scale at the end of large periods of time. I found this reflection was
not very helpful because of at it was not as useful at the end of the semester or at the mid point of
semester. I think this is because it is more helpful after every interaction because then it is the best
way to address all of these interactions. As a mentor, it's important to really pay attention to my
interactions with my mentees because this is the basis of my relationship with them. There are a lot
of times of when I need to deconstruct my feelings and attitudes. This is often the case for my
mentees, with them being only a year younger and the growth of our relationship, there are some
interactions that I look back at and think I maybe should not have had done or said some of the
things I did do. This is me deconstructing these interactions, the attitudes that I had, were not
appropriate for this

Reflection Journal On Critical Thinking For Nurses
Reflection Journal on Critical Thinking for Nurses Critical thinking is defined as a disciplined, self
directed thinking that meets appropriate intellectual standards within a particular mode or domain of
thinking (Paul and Elder, 2014). In Nursing, the possession of this important skill helps a nurse to
assess a given situation, identify the main problem, determine a perfect solution and implement an
effective method of dealing with the problem. In this essay, I will share my experience when I was
still a novice in the nursing profession and how my understanding of critical thinking has radically
transformed, the importance of critical thinking skills in this profession and useful ways on how to
develop this specific skill. I was working night shift in a level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
facility and my 10 days orientation was over. It was my first day working without my preceptor.
Since I was a new staff, the charge nurse allocated two stable babies for me. One was Baby Zahra, a
33 weeks preemie, on room air, with nasogastric tube, with peripheral intravenous line to keep the
vein open and feeding with expressed breast milk every 3 hours. I started my shift with a bit of
nervousness knowing that I am on my own and wondering if I can remember everything that my
preceptor had taught me during our orientation. I started my assessment and observed Baby Zahra to
be pale, her skin was slightly mottled. I checked her vital signs. The cardiac monitor showed that

Critical Analysis: Critical Thinking And Reflection
2.1.1 Critical thinking and reflection Critical thinking is an attempt to ask and answer questions
systematically, to produce a coherent and credible story or argument. In critical thinking, evidences
and good reasons should be seek first prior to believing something to be true. A model to generate
critical thinking is suggested below. Figure 1 Model to Generate Critical Thinking (Courtesy of:
University of Plymouth) Critical thinking can support the reflection process, while the reflection
itself is the continuously observing at and discerning about our experiences, actions, feelings, and
responses, and afterwards analyzing them so that ones can learn from them (Boud et al., 1994;
Atkins and Murphy, 1994). According to Schon (1991), reflection can occurs after the activity has
been done when one is thinking about what he/she did, judging how successful he/she was, and
whether any changes to his/her action could have resulted in different outcomes. Through ... Show

Finally this is the time to deal with colleagues or others which have interrupted me earlier. I will call
or come to them to discuss their requests and concerns, some of them usually have been addressed
in the email which I have read earlier. During the discussion I always bring my notebook to write
down the necessary information. Subsequently, I will come back to my team and rearrange the tasks
and priorities if necessary. By this time some new emails will have been received and tasks and
priorities can again be rearranged as appropriate. 4. At the end of the day, I will recheck if most of
the tasks have been conducted or completed as expected. Some pending and unfinished tasks usually
will be given to the night shift or rearranged to be continued in the next day. Those routines above

Critical Reflection Is Essential For Developing An...
Critical reflection is essential for developing an adaptive pedagogy in that critical reflection
encourages the sharing of knowledge, skills and experiences. Furthermore, critical reflective
practice is a form of ongoing learning that involves engaging with questions of philosophy, ethics
and practice. Additionally, documenting the daily events in the ECE sector is an important aspect of
being a professional and are a compulsory requirement for meeting the NCAC (2005) guidelines for
high quality early childhood education and care (National Childcare Accreditation Council, 2005.)
Therefore it is becoming increasingly important for practitioners to have the ability to critically
reflect on pedagogical practice and the development of child agency in effective learning contexts.
Pedagogies, which are reflected in elements of teaching actions and practices, such as types of
documentation and methods of grouping children, should be relevant to the context and consistent
with the service's philosophy and approaches to curriculum. This means that '...approaches and
pedagogies will differ from one setting to the next as they take into account staff and family
perspectives, the service philosophy and analysis of the context's potential and challenges...'(USQ,
2016). As educators refine their philosophy they will also adjust pedagogies to reflect new
approaches. Understandings of children and childhood should lead practitioners to continuously
investigate how they transform approaches

Critical Reflection Essay
As the semester comes to an end, I believe it only natural that we've come to the point where we
must reflect on how we've grown as intellectuals. While in my other classes this reflection is
presented in a cumulative multiple choice final exam. I find it refreshing that I'm permitted to look
back at not just the course material, but myself as an individual. Taking into account the small and
large transitions in my thinking as a writer. But also my writing process as a whole, and the learning
concepts I was able to absorb as the semester concludes. That being stated let me first begin by
analyzing my role as a writer, then gradually move towards my writing progress, and the learning
outcomes I've achieved personally. Let's get started!
In the beginning, of the semester I never truly saw myself as a writer in the traditional sense. Yes, I
could write, and in some cases I believed I could do it quite well, however I always reserved the title
of writer for those whom published or at least attempted to. However, as the course progressed I
found my definition of a writer expanding alongside it. While I won't say that I've changed my
classification of myself as a writer, I will say that the term is not just reserved for those whom seek
to publish or have already published works of literature. Writing is much more than that it is a form
of expression that has no bounds, and allows one to communicate in ways simple speech has, yet to
provide. It conveys

Critical Reflection Of An Organization
Critical reflection Critical reflection should help members of the organization to see changes in a
different way and to uncover the underlying interests that are hidden in obvious management
practices. One should understand that these practices are social constructs and become aware of the
role one plays in the production and reproduction of these practices (Darwin et al., 2002). Critical
reflection does not come easily, but develops from resistance against social restrictions. In this
sense, soft management techniques have the paradoxical effect to weaken the capacity of staff to
reflect critically on labor situations (Alvesson & Willmott, 1992). Hence the skeptical view that
critical theorists have on management phenomena such as empowerment and teamwork (Hardy &
Leiba–O'Sullivan, 1998; Boje & Rosile, 2001; Sewell, 2001; Lincoln et al., 2002) In what follows,
we explain how critical reflection leads to insights about the power relations in change. Adepts of
the critical discourse are convinced that strategic change has everything to do with influence, power

While these views describe the requirements to build effective structures, critical discourse will
point out the irrationality of these beliefs by revealing how the yet overpowering efficiency and
effectiveness is sacrificed to safeguard the privileges of the powerful. According to critical discourse
there are fundamental structural differences in terms of access to power in which politics is an
inevitable reaction to the unfair distribution of resources in organizations. Organizational politics is
not just a matter of self–interest, but also a struggle between opposing class interests in existing
elitist power structures. Critical discourse examines the ways in which specific groups strive to
make social constructions that operate in their own interests appear natural and so uncontestable

Critical Analysis and Reflection: key pedagogical concepts Within teaching practice it is important
to be aware of the underlying influences that inform your personal pedagogy. This includes an
understanding of pedagogical theories, personal values, beliefs and past experiences that is brought
into the teaching environment. In order to achieve this, one must practice critical analysis of
everyday situations encountered within the classroom, to understand whether or not your teaching
practice is effective and why this is the case. In order to work towards an understanding of the
influences on my future practice, I will analyse a critical incident where a student was asked to fill

522) and reflection. Critical reflection can reveal the many details that impact on the creation of an
incident, as well as the response of both teacher and student. Critical incidents can be 'indicative of
underlying trends, motives and structures' (Tripp 1993, p. 25) within the classroom. Therefore,
critical reflection involves the consideration of the larger picture. This involves the social and
cultural influences and the past experiences that impact on the situation, 'not just the individual
actions of the teacher and the class' (McGill 2013, p. 522). Critical reflection also involves 'digging
deep to uncover both the strengths,' (McGill 2013, p. 522) and the shortcomings of a situation. This
will reveal the contextual factors 'that either foster or inhibit that teacher from acting' (Letts 2013, p.
474). Utilising critical reflexivity when practicing reflection will also reveal your own personal
assumptions that stem from personal experiences, beliefs and values, and an immersion in your own
culture (Hinchey 2010, p, 34). Awareness of your own assumptions will also lead to the realisation
that each student will respond differently due to their own values and assumptions. As Hinchey
(2004, p.24) states, students are 'likely to bring very different assumptions, expectations, and norms
into the classroom.' Furthermore, it is critical to avoid making assumptions based on personal
experience when working with students as this can hinder their progress and result in incorrect or
inappropriate strategies for their

lessons that promote critical thinking, engagement and motivation. All of these are crucial points of

since they play a critical role in my lessons. Although using the SATIC sheet to evaluate my

Additionally, creating this environment through wait time will allow students to become active in
their learning. Having time to think deeply about these questions might even motivate them to want
to look further into a certain topic, which not only promotes student goals but also helps them
become lifelong learners (Goals for students). Therefore, wait time should be properly implemented
in order to help students succeed. In addition to asking proper questions and allowing appropriate
wait time, teachers should learn how to praise students. The desired behavior is for teachers to find a
healthy balance between neutral responses that encourage students to persevere and praise that
motivates them to succeed. Praise can be effective in the classroom because it can be a positive,
motivating force (How not to talk to your kids). However, it is important to balance praise because
too much of it can allow students to shut down, assuming their answer is correct and they have no
room for improvement. The SATIC pattern prefers neutral responses so students can receive
affirmation that encourages them to think deeper. However, praise can be necessary for the overall
learning experience. Current State of Interaction Patterns I noticed several behavioral patterns from
my video that I was unaware of prior to analyzing my teaching. This lesson involved practicing
multiplication story problems that were more difficult than the problems they are used to

Law of Reflection: Reflection and refraction are common properties of light. When a ray of light
comes into contact with the surface of some material, part of the ray is reflected and part of it is
absorbed. In other words, reflection occurs when an incident ray hits a reflective surface and
bounces off. The law of reflection states that the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence
(always in respect to the normal) and that the incident ray, the normal line and the reflected ray are
all located in the same plane.
Snell 's Law of Refraction: When a ray of light reaches a boundary between two transparent
mediums, reflection and refraction occur. Refraction takes place when rays of light bend across the
boundary into the second medium which causes a change in the light 's velocity. The denser the
medium, the slower the light.
Total Internal Reflection: Internal reflection refers to light travelling from a higher index medium to
a lower index medium, which causes the ray to bend away from the normal, so the exit angle is
greater than the incident angle. As the angle of incidence increases, so does the angle of refraction.
Total internal reflection takes place when the angle of incidence is greater than the

Steps Of Critical Thinking : Identification, Decision...
, if not most, have heard of the phrase "use your critical thinking skills" but probably never truly
understood what that meant and what it entails. There are seven steps that are used in critical
thinking: Identification, research, analysis, application, decision making, evaluation, and reflection.
The first step in the critical thinking process is identification which means exactly what the first
steps is: identifying the problem or issue. The second step is research which is researching what the
problem is, how it could have come about, and any possibilities to overcome the issue at hand. The
third step is analysis, this means that one must analyze, or evaluate the smaller bits of the problem
and piece together how everything works hand in hand with each other. The fourth step is
application. Application simply means applying the general moral principles to the problem one is
trying to fix, deciding which ones are most relevant to the issue, and how they conflict with each
other. The fifth step of the critical thinking process is decision making. Decision making is choosing
the most effective and most ethical choice from the available options and using it to fix the problem
and be able to justify the decision. The sixth step to the critical thinking process is evaluation. The
evaluation step not only asks the individual if the choice they made was the most effective decision;
but was the decision is morally and ethically sound for their predicament. The seventh and final

Reflection Of The Four Critical Thinking Process In Nursing
The four critical thinking process that I would like to improve are analyzing, logical reasoning,
confidence, and creativity.
1. Analyzing – is separating or breaking a whole into parts to discover their nature, function and
relationships (Scheffer & Rubenfeld, 2000).
Although I believe that I am somewhat deficient in analyzing, I have dependably strived to show
signs of improvement in analyzing or examining the circumstance in any given situation. I have
made some change a week ago that I believe will assist me in enhancing my analyzing
abilities/skills. An example of how I have used analyzing to facilitate the diagnostic reasoning
process was exhibited the other day when an experienced nurse floated to my unit, and one of her
assigned patients was in distress. When assessing the patient, all of her vital signs were elevated, BP
234/190, P 98, RR 45, T 98.9F, 02 sat 92% on BIPAP, glucose 121, she voiced feeling of chest pain,
severe headache, difficulty breathing and severe anxiety. The nurse inferred that the patient was
having a panic attack and that the severe anxiety is what is causing the other symptoms to be
elevated. She called the MD and request for stat Ativan order. Knowing this patient, I calmly
approached her and explained to her that these signs and symptoms are new and that I believe the
patient is most likely having a hypertensive crisis. She rejects my nursing judgements and voiced

Reflection On A Critical Incident In PGCE
Introduction:
The way in which we reflect upon a situation, shaped by the interpretation of a significant event is
defined as a critical incident (Tripp, 2011). Reflecting has been crucial within my first two phases of
PGCE as I have been able to value experiences and make judgements to improve further. My home
school practice was graded an 'outstanding' mainstream primary school (Ofstead, 2015), working 19
percentage points above their local authority in reading, writing and maths (School performance
tables, 2017). The school's numbers are below average for free school meals in the area and they
have an average percentage of special educational needs children. Pupil premium percentages are
currently at 15 percent out of the 218 children on roll.
This assignment will further develop critical incidents that occurred throughout phases one and two
in my home school. School, subject and pedagogical knowledge incidents will be critically
evaluated against theories and practice. According to Banks, Leach and Moon (2005) the
professional teaching knowledge vision consists of all three of these areas. A series of conceptual
frameworks have been used to critically analyse each incident further including: Brookfield's lenses,
Banks Leach and Moons' model of reflection and Schon and Eraut (1995) reflection on, in and of
action.
I will primarily analyse my school knowledge incident. I have chosen this incident as it required me
to reflect afterwards about how the situation could have

Reflection The process of critical thinking that I used to answer my question relates because in critical thinking you have to be willing to think differently and not just go with what you think you already know. You also have to ask yourself question and be able to understand the answers. I believe that I can use critical thinking in other areas by making sure that I am always open minded and be willing to listen and learn form others. The steps that I can take to ensure that I continue to use critical thinking in the future are to be able to acknowledge when I'm letting barriers get in the way, and make sure that I try to avoid them in the future. Reflection Paper On Critical Thinking What have you learned about (address each area listed below): rhetorical knowledge By understanding this concept, I can adjust and write to different audiences and think outside the box more efficiently. I do believe I need to work on this. I tend to write just from my perspective and if I don't know a topic or understand an audience very well then, I just write surface type things and can't really empathize with whatever I am writing. critical thinking, reading, and writing In a different class, I learned about critical thinking in a different way and how to improve it. • 7. Reflection Paper On Critical Thinking Critical Thinking – Self Reflection The concept of critical thinking was something I had never heard of until I began my journey to obtain my degree. I never realized that every time I was faced in making a decision, there was a purpose or goal that was attached to that decision. Looking back at decisions I have made in the past, I have to wonder, did I stop and think through the issues? Did I identify, evaluate, comprehend, analyze and resolve the problem? I am certain in the early stages of my career; I made decisions based on emotions. Some would even say I was a bit of a hot head. However, through the years, I have found that even though I may not have known I was critically thinking, I was definitely doing so. Moreover, gaining additional techniques through this course will only evolve my critical thinking abilities and lend a hand in furthering my career. My Life as a Critical Thinker Describe the role that critical thinking plays in your life today. The role of critical thinking plays a significant role in my life professionally as well as personally. As a Credit Manager for Unilock, Inc., it is my responsibility to interconnect my skills when assessing credit to our customers. First, I have to analyze the financial health of our customers. Next, I have to evaluate all the credit documentation collected and determine appropriate credit limits. Finally, I have to monitor the overall portfolio of our Accounts Receivables to ensure that we balance our risk in granting credit. Granting credit is only one aspect of critical thinking in my life. I also use critical thinking personally as well. Recently, I have begun to really think about my husband and I's financial situation when we finally decide to retire. Although we do not plan on retiring for another 15–20 years, I want to make sure we correctly investing in order to financially live a comfortable life. I have watched both of our parents struggle to meet their financial obligations since retirement and I am determined to learn from their mistakes. I began by analyzing our 401K retirement investments through our employers. After some research on the topic and a conversation with our financial planner, I discovered we were not ... • 9. Critical Reflection Paper ENGL 501: Great Works of Ancient Literature (Fall 2016) Through this course I developed a deeper comprehension of ancient literature. I studied the works of Homer (The Iliad) and Plato (Republic) as well as Greek lyric poetry (Archilochus and Sappho). My personal takeaways included a more contextual understanding of how the ancient Greeks conceived of literature, viewing it as a means of historical preservation as well as a tool to build psychological and philosophical understanding. Moreover, I came to recognize the more 'practical' or 'utilitarian' purpose of literature that Ancient societies employed. Likewise, I benefited from the acquaintance with new argumentative material to share with my secondary students. The background knowledge of Homer and Plato have provided a springboard for me to build stronger discursive discussions in my own classroom. ENGL 525: Studies in the Short Story (Fall 2016) A deeper conception of what constitutes a short story is what I anticipated when signing up for this course. Yet, while I did gain knowledge of the components of a short story, I also took away a wealth of insight on how to take apart, discuss, and synthesize new ideas from reading short stories. The short story is the medium that most of high school and undergraduate students begin to read what is considered literature. Therefore, I found this course to be a vital asset to both my professional and pedagogical development. We read and discussed a wide range of texts with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Critical Thinking Reflection Paper Most elementary, middle, and high schools use the phrase 'critical thinking' very loosely. Textbooks typically use this term to label discussion questions, but, in my experience, teachers have never used this as an opportunity to encourage real critical thinking. In fact, before I joined this class, I had gone through eleven years of schooling without ever being told what those two little words mean. I always assumed that I had good critical thinking skills, just because I'm smart. After less than a month in this class, I realize that critical thinking is much more complicated than just being intelligent. Critical thinking is defined as "deliberate, fair, open– minded, rational examination of the basis of concepts, beliefs, and arguments." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 11). So, by definition, fallacious thinking hinders your ability to be happy. Thinking critically can help you start to recognize these fallacies and prevent them, leading to a more rational thought process, and, in turn, a happier life. In this paper, I'm going to explain a few of the reasons that thinking rationally is so crucial to leading a happy life, as well as analyze a few types of fallacies to demonstrate why they are detrimental to your happiness. Thinking critically and rationally is a very important part of being happy, because the way you think greatly affects your perception of reality by shaping the way you see the world, your feelings and emotions, and even how you behave (Cohen, p.9). In other words, your view of reality isn't just given to you; it's molded by the way you think. Learning to detect and prevent fallacies in your own life helps ensure that your view on reality itself isn't skewed, leading to a better understanding of others around you and to a happier life. Thinking critically is an essential part of preventing fallacies, but it can't really work unless you first learn to understand what a fallacy is and why it can be so harmful to your happiness. Since I have no real way of knowing which fallacies are committed more often by you or anyone else, I will draw from my own experience to explain which fallacies I notice myself falling victim to most often and explain the ways in ... • 13. Critical Thinking Reflection W233 helped shape my writing and critical thinking by reframing my concept of what constitutes a good piece of writing. Prior to this course, I thought that a good paper consisted of an argument supported with solid word choice and consistent organization throughout to guide the reader through each paragraph. My thoughts at this time were more focused the "what" of an argument, but I learned that in order to write a great paper–especially one that involves mediating an argument–it is equally important to focus on the "how" and "why" of the argument. By this I mean that explaining a point of view on an issue does not result in good argumentation or negotiation, but instead fully understanding how the benefits and drawbacks affect all facets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My best peer reviews came on this paper because they provided me with feedback the gave me some good pointers and made me more confident in my ability to negotiate an argument effectively. In addition to the negotiation/mediation paper, I felt very confident in my abstract because it allowed me to use some of my scientific and technical writing skills, which I would argue are rather strong skills given my background as a biology major. Looking at some of my other works, my rhetorical analyses both allowed me to dive into the beef of my topic a little bit more. However, looking back, my second rhetorical analysis was one of my weaker writings and I provided a better analysis in my first rhetorical analysis. Although I do not feel quite as confident in the second rhetorical analysis, both writings improved my analytical writing skills, and both assignments–along with the annotated bibliography–were paramount in helping me understand how to approach my paper. Out of all of papers I wrote in this class, my worst paper was the reflection. The reflection paper prompt allowed me to write a very open–ended paper; no strict guidelines (other than usual length and formatting requirements) limited my possibilities of what to write. In this regard, I would suggest that writing this paper was a pretty simple task. However, at times I found it difficult to escape beyond the surface of my discussion. It took more concentration to break through ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Reflection Paper On Critical Thinking It has been three months now since I joined this informative class of Critical Thinking and therefore, it's time to get prepared for the final exams because this is the second last week of the semester. I choose to register for this class Critical thinking class, although I did not know what it entails. I did it out the believe that I was going to get some good education out of it. The class is scheduled twice a week, i.e Monday and Wednesday. Our class consists of Twenty students and Mr. Julian Beltran is in charge of the class as our Instructor. It was a chilly morning on a Monday and I got ready and headed for my class. On my first day, I had to go to school early in order to get enough time to walk around the whole building and get a good orientation of my class since it was my first day of class. I arrived twenty minutes early and lucky enough, my class was not far from where I had parked my car. I entered the building and headed upstairs where the classrooms from number 200–250 were upstairs. I so excited when I meet with fellow classmates waiting outside our classroom number 212. Within a very short time, Mr. Beltran arrived and he ushered into the classroom for the very first session. The class was cool and calm, everybody was eagerly waiting for the introduction for the new subject. Mr. Beltran immediately asked the class, "what is critical thinking?" everybody stared at him trying to think about the question. To make matters worse, we we were not allowed as a ... • 17. Critical Thinking Reflection Critical thinking is something that we uses all the time in our everyday lives. I use critical thinking every day in my school work, in my job working as a caterer, and, as funny as this may sound, when I play games. In the future, critical thinking will be a crucial part of my profession in emergency medical services when it will be my job to figure out what is going on with a patient and provide them with the treatment that they need based on how they are presenting to me. Every day in my studies as a student, I have to use critical thinking in my class and homework. In my Emergency Medical Technician training class and in this class I have to determine what information is important and what information is not. This class has given me a better understanding of critical thinking and has helped me better analyse material that I have to read. I have learned that the quantity of material that you process in colleges often dwarfs what students are given in high school. Inevitably, the more material you have to sift through, the more critical thinking you have use to pick out what is really important and what is not. A great example of this is the textbook for my Emergency Medical Technician class. That textbook is over twelve–hundred pages long and contains dozens of charts and lists of information that I will need to be able to recall when I am acting in the field. Critical thinking has helped me figure out what information is the most vital for me and the importance of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Essay on Critical Thinking/Reflection Assessing both critical thinking and the reflection process in learning, these aspects are both intertwined. Without one, you cannot have the other. With the use of critical thinking and reflection this thought process allows us to analyse, assess, evaluate, learn and develop arguments. However this can have a twofold affect in the learning process. The learning process means taking many aspects and perspectives into account to establish an argument. Critical thinking draws on questions such as: how, what, when, why and who to determine the quality of an argument and also the credibility. Although without critical thinking a conclusion cannot be drawn. Barriers to critical thinking must also be questioned, whether these are: doubt, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Cottrell, Stella, 2005) states "poor criticism can result from making judgment based on too general an overview of the subject matter." When developing an argument one must be careful not to make false or unfair assumptions and always look for alternative points of view. Doing this allows you to analyse and evaluate and make a more informed decision about an argument. Arguments are about reviewing, speculating and assessing. As a result of doing this, a line of reasoning can be established and conclusions made. Barriers such as critiquing an argument can have a positive effect in critical thinking and the learning process as it allows a person to question everything. One must also be careful when developing an argument and using the critical thinking skills not to make generalisations and jumping to a conclusion. Critical thinking is the skill of thinking about your own thinking and perspectives. Critical questioning is an important part of the critical thinking process. Questioning how, what, when, why and who are all essential parts to evaluate and analyse a quality of an argument. By doing this it allows deeper thought and allows you to find an argument. This is described through (Dwyer, Judith, 2009) stating that critical thinking is: "purposeful, self–regulatory judgement that occurs when an issue is raised, a problem needs to be solved, opinions are reconsidered or experiences carefully reflected upon." It is essential for nurses to reflect on their practice to extend their skills in critical reflection and maintain a contemporary multicultural environment. Critical reflection discloses individual's notion about themselves, people and the workplace. Problem solving and decision making are used to help improve and transform nursing practice. The essay will examine the theory and practice of critical reflection and its benefits attained by nurses. The essay will also encapsulate the strategies that nurses can use to reflect on experiences and the ramification of failing to reflect during practice. Wood (2013) stated when an individual pens their thoughts and experiences; it enables them to understand better, appreciate and gives an insight of individuals perception. Journaling helps nurses to relief stress, frustration and gives them to reflect on events and enables them to develop goals and professional development pathways (Garrity, 2012). Journaling develops nurse's self–awareness, skills in observation, recollection, experience evaluation and integration of current and new knowledge (Garrity, 2012). Receiving feedback from colleagues is another strategy that enables nurses to reflect on their practice and gain new knowledge, skills and help individuals to make effective goals to improve on their practice (Bold, 2008). Furthermore, formal frameworks can also provide guidance on reflective thinking, for example Gibbs reflective Cycle helps nurses to critically think on events, become proactive and develop autonomous clinical and professional practice (Jasper, Rosser & Mooney, 2013). • 25. Reflection Paper On Critical Thinking My original thoughts on Critical Thinking were that it requires learned skill and self–reflection. I felt that it is impossible to think critically while ignoring the flaws in your thought processes. Logic is imperative to investigate the motive behind any critical response. I theorized being vested in the outcome can often prejudice an opinion which skews the result. Most often, putting our own experiences in what we learn is acceptable, even encouraged, after we have applied a critical eye to the issue. As students, we will need to remember to think logically, to research and make an in depth study of each article, fact, theory, or question. The article I chose changed my mind up to a point. The author posits that engaging in learning encourages a more robust experience and a better outcome. In her class, she holds a seminar called "The Last Class" in which she involves the students in not only critiquing the course but also eliciting suggestions to improve it for future students. (Bleicher, 2011). I enjoyed reading the different tactics she employed to elicit student involvement, and while they are simple, they appeared effective. The entire experience is about participation and improvement. The students respond to a list of topics: Readings, Units, Writing, Activities, Suggestions, Favorites, Advice, Big Questions, Films, Media, Future. The course specific items would not apply to every situation, but in general, it's an inclusive list. Some of the tactics she used that struck me the most: 1. She gave the markers to the shyest student, instructing the others to get their markers from that student, who was then actively involved.2. Using music that did not appeal to the students to get them to supply a list of "better" choices.3.Particularly, the idea of putting up pages with a simple word (or two) to which the students could respond, taking notes or ideas from others.(Bleicher, 2011) By the time I was done reading the article I had completely changed my mind about interactive learning. I now feel that it is a complementary way to learn and become involved, which will help reinforce learning by awakening a hunger for knowledge. The student who sent the author the following message summed up the reason for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Reflection Upon A Critical Incident Essay This paper will reflect upon and explore a critical incident which occurred whilst attending a clinical placement. Reflective practice has become very popular over the last few decades throughout a variety of professions. In some professions it has become one of the defining features of competence. The wide spread utilization of reflective practice is due to the fact that it 'rings true' (Loughran, 2000). Within different disciplines, what is understood by reflective practice varies considerably (Fook et al, 2006). Despite this, some agreement has been achieved. In general, reflective practice is understood as the process of learning through and from experience towards gaining new insights of self and/or practice (Boud et al 1985; ... Patricia Lucas Auckland University of Technology (and PhD student Deakin University) Do we really know what critical reflection means in the context of work–integrated learning, more specifically cooperative education? Critical reflection, in some form, is located within many higher education programmes, including cooperative education and many educators would say this is important for in–depth student learning. It is a form of reflection that is complicated as well as challenging for the learner and the educator. It would appear that there is a lack of consensus regarding the definition of critical reflection, as it is difficult to define and your definition may depend on your context ... There seems to be similarities within and across the various applications from many fields or disciplines of education that may have little or no areas of overlap (Fook & Gardner 2007). The framework chosen to guide students' reflections may be determined by the expectations of the learning outcomes. Some models of reflection may not encourage critical reflection. Models may guide the process of reflection but should not impose a prescription of what reflection is. It is not essential to follow a model and some practitioners choose not to. There is some criticism of models that reduce reflection to levels but this approach maybe useful for teaching what the focus of reflection entails. Reflection On Critical Reflection Introduction Critical reflection is the process of probing our thoughts, feelings, and experiences in order to understand how they fit in with the ideas, concepts, and theories that are presented by others (Ryerson University, 2016). On the other hand, reflective practice is the cornerstone of critical analysis to construct meaning. As Brookfield (1998) stated, "critically reflective practice is a process of inquiry involving practitioners in trying to discover, and research, the assumptions that frame how they work" (p.197). In this paper, I will shed light on my personal critical reflection practice, how it helped me succeed in my higher education studies, and how critical reflection benefited me as a student and an individual. Critical Reflective Practice In my workplace, critical reflection is not practiced formally nor is it visible. I think it is due to the ever–changing nature of management, unstable work environment, and lack of time. However, I have practiced critical reflection in my higher education studies and in this paper I will focus on that. Critical reflection is mainly structured around inquiry and my undergraduate program was developed around problem–based learning. • 37. Reflection On Critical Thinking Critical Thinking and Reading Reflections Some people say that critical thinking is a difficult thing to do, but for me it is quite easy. Before taking this reading class, I have never "thought about my thinking" before. I am the type of person to contemplate everything, no matter if it is for a purchase, a decision, or even about what to eat. The book Learning to Think Things Through, has showed me tips to think more critically. In chapter one, I learned what critical thinking was and how to utilize it. Richard Paul once said that, "critical thinking is thinking about your thinking, while you're thinking, in order to make your thinking better." In my opinion, this quote was the best definition of critical thinking in the book. It clearly states the definition of critical thinking. The first chapter has also taught me steps to use while thinking critically. It taught me the three parts of thinking critically: asking questions, answering the questions by reasoning them out, and then believing the results of our reasoning. The most essential tips I learned was learning the critical thinking questions, the importance of negative feedback, and the SEE–I technique. Through my eyes, the second chapter was less informative than the first chapter. Even though I didn't learn as much, the chapter went into more depth than the first. Chapter one covered critical thinking very broadly. In chapter two Nosich goes deeper into the concepts of the elements of reasoning. The first main ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Examining and strengthening the thought process improves decision making abilities which enables a person to make better, more informed choices. This essay will analyze where I personally am in my development as a critical thinker, along with the challenges I face in the effort to improve in this regard. Age has also given me the empathy and ability to better see things from another perspective, something I did not when I was younger. I have found having the humility and foresight to ask for outside opinions to be one of the most valuable tools in the decision–making process. Further strengthening my critical thinking skills will not only further enhance my ability to make sound decisions and reason through the issues and decision I make, but will help me to meet the goals that I have set for my future. One of these goals is to impress upon my children the importance of critical thinking, especially gathering all of the facts before making a decision. My career goals in IT Management will also benefit from the application of these methods. In this field, as in many others, a poor decision can be costly or even fatal to a business. • 41. Outcome 3 : Critical Reflection OUTCOME 3 – CRITICAL REFLECTION Outcome 3 deals with the ability to formulate complex and persuasive arguments with stakes that matter. By being aware of and responding to differing points of view, as well as carefully and thoroughly analyzing evidence, Outcome 3 focuses on using inquiry to develop and drive a position. Moreover, Outcome 3 stresses the importance of understanding the consequences of an argument and how it plays a part in present day contexts. Lastly, similar to Outcome 1, Outcome 3 addresses carefully crafting an argument to be appropriate for a given audience and situation. For this outcome, I will be using MA #1 (Using a Theoretical Concept to Analyze an Issue) for my showcase piece. Major Assignment #1 consisted of selecting an environmental issue and one of the theoretical concepts discussed in class, and using the theoretical concept as a lens in which to explore the chosen environmental issue. For my specific paper, I selected to focus on the issue of urbanization and urban sprawl, while using Leopold's concept of a land ethic as my lens. In this paper, my thesis statement is complex, illustrated by my admittance of how "the topic of urbanization and urban sprawl is complex and difficult to navigate" (MA #1, 1). At the same time, my claim is specific and nuanced as I state, "what is clear is that as cities continue to enlarge and innovate to please its citizens, the environment must also be taken into account as part of the cities' community" (MA #1, 1). Moreover, in my revised draft, I add an additional sentence to clarify early on the stakes present in argument and paper: "Without such awareness, the environment is put in a position of peril, and prolonged irresponsibility will perpetuate the irreversible damage placed on the land that many call home" (MA #1, 2). As demonstrated here, my argument in this paper is complex and contains stakes that matter; therefore, I believe that I am meeting Outcome 3. Additionally, after each piece of evidence present in my paper, I continue on to analyze the text and explain the importance of my chosen evidence. For example, after presenting the evidence of how thousands of schools in rural China have been closed, and the newly gained funds ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The best way to learn about critical thinking and what it is, is by looking through examples of critical thinking. From its definition to everyday life, to how critical thinking has changed the world there are examples of critical thinking all around us. Definition of Critical Thinking Critical thinking is a process of learning and exploring information with the most comprehensible, objective and considerate viewpoint. Observing, Evaluating and researching data is the first step in critical thinking. That data is then studied, applied and then evaluated which is a part of the reflection process of critical thinking. Critical thinking was defined in depth by the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking in 1987. A statement was made by Michael Scriven and Richard Paul in which they described critical thinking as: "the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. In its exemplary form, it is based on universal intellectual values that transcend subject matter divisions: clarity, accuracy, precision, consistency, relevance, sound evidence, good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness." According to Brookfield critical reflection is "the process of analyzing, reconsidering and questioning experiences within a broad context of issues". This is necessary for anyone working in a people centered job or in human services. Critical reflection allows us to tackle our assumptions and actions and address where this comes from. There are 3 different phases of the critical reflection process. The first is deconstruction. This is where we take the case or moment apart, this where we deconstruct our attitudes surrounding the circumstances. The next step is resistance and challenge. This is where we ask why and what this means. The last step is reconstruction. In this step we put together everything that we have learned from this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I started my shift with a bit of nervousness knowing that I am on my own and wondering if I can remember everything that my preceptor had taught me during our orientation. Critical reflection is essential for developing an adaptive pedagogy in that critical reflection encourages the sharing of knowledge, skills and experiences. Furthermore, critical reflective practice is a form of ongoing learning that involves engaging with questions of philosophy, ethics and practice. Additionally, documenting the daily events in the ECE sector is an important aspect of being a professional and are a compulsory requirement for meeting the NCAC (2005) guidelines for high quality early childhood education and care (National Childcare Accreditation Council, 2005.) Therefore it is becoming increasingly important for practitioners to have the ability to critically reflect on pedagogical practice and the development of child agency in effective learning contexts. Critical Reflection Essay As the semester comes to an end, I believe it only natural that we've come to the point where we must reflect on how we've grown as intellectuals. While in my other classes this reflection is presented in a cumulative multiple choice final exam. I find it refreshing that I'm permitted to look back at not just the course material, but myself as an individual. Taking into account the small and large transitions in my thinking as a writer. But also my writing process as a whole, and the learning concepts I was able to absorb as the semester concludes. That being stated let me first begin by analyzing my role as a writer, then gradually move towards my writing progress, and the learning outcomes I've achieved personally. Let's get started! In the beginning, of the semester I never truly saw myself as a writer in the traditional sense. Yes, I could write, and in some cases I believed I could do it quite well, however I always reserved the title of writer for those whom published or at least attempted to. However, as the course progressed I found my definition of a writer expanding alongside it. While I won't say that I've changed my classification of myself as a writer, I will say that the term is not just reserved for those whom seek to publish or have already published works of literature. Critical Reflection Of An Organization Critical reflection Critical reflection should help members of the organization to see changes in a different way and to uncover the underlying interests that are hidden in obvious management practices. One should understand that these practices are social constructs and become aware of the role one plays in the production and reproduction of these practices (Darwin et al., 2002). Critical reflection does not come easily, but develops from resistance against social restrictions. In this sense, soft management techniques have the paradoxical effect to weaken the capacity of staff to reflect critically on labor situations (Alvesson & Willmott, 1992). Hence the skeptical view that critical theorists have on management phenomena such as empowerment and teamwork (Hardy & Leiba–O'Sullivan, 1998; Boje & Rosile, 2001; Sewell, 2001; Lincoln et al., 2002) In what follows, we explain how critical reflection leads to insights about the power relations in change. Critical Reflection Critical Analysis and Reflection: key pedagogical concepts Within teaching practice it is important to be aware of the underlying influences that inform your personal pedagogy. This includes an understanding of pedagogical theories, personal values, beliefs and past experiences that is brought into the teaching environment. In order to achieve this, one must practice critical analysis of everyday situations encountered within the classroom, to understand whether or not your teaching practice is effective and why this is the case. In order to work towards an understanding of the influences on my future practice, I will analyse a critical incident where a student was asked to fill out a quiz to grade herself on particular personal and classroom ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 522) and reflection. Critical reflection can reveal the many details that impact on the creation of an incident, as well as the response of both teacher and student. Critical incidents can be 'indicative of underlying trends, motives and structures' (Tripp 1993, p. 25) within the classroom. Therefore, critical reflection involves the consideration of the larger picture. This involves the social and cultural influences and the past experiences that impact on the situation, 'not just the individual actions of the teacher and the class' (McGill 2013, p. 522). Critical reflection also involves 'digging deep to uncover both the strengths,' (McGill 2013, p. 522) and the shortcomings of a situation. This will reveal the contextual factors 'that either foster or inhibit that teacher from acting' (Letts 2013, p. 474). Utilising critical reflexivity when practicing reflection will also reveal your own personal assumptions that stem from personal experiences, beliefs and values, and an immersion in your own culture (Hinchey 2010, p, 34). Awareness of your own assumptions will also lead to the realisation that each student will respond differently due to their own values and assumptions. As Hinchey (2004, p.24) states, students are 'likely to bring very different assumptions, expectations, and norms into the classroom.' Furthermore, it is critical to avoid making assumptions based on personal experience when working with students as this can hinder their progress and result in incorrect or inappropriate strategies for their ... Critical Thinking Reflection Paper Introduction As an educator and lifelong learner, it is beneficial to engage in professional development that analyzes my ability to interact with my students and my strategies to create lessons that promote critical thinking, engagement and motivation. All of these are crucial points of an effective lesson. My teaching behaviors, both verbal and nonverbal, are important to analyze since they play a critical role in my lessons. Although using the SATIC sheet to evaluate my teaching behaviors is tedious and difficult, it opens a brand new lens to my teaching that I have never seen before. This lens provides plenty of opportunities to make improvements and find room for growth. Desired State of Interaction Patterns As a teacher, it is not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Additionally, creating this environment through wait time will allow students to become active in their learning. Having time to think deeply about these questions might even motivate them to want to look further into a certain topic, which not only promotes student goals but also helps them become lifelong learners (Goals for students). Therefore, wait time should be properly implemented in order to help students succeed. In addition to asking proper questions and allowing appropriate wait time, teachers should learn how to praise students. The desired behavior is for teachers to find a healthy balance between neutral responses that encourage students to persevere and praise that motivates them to succeed. Praise can be effective in the classroom because it can be a positive, motivating force (How not to talk to your kids). However, it is important to balance praise because too much of it can allow students to shut down, assuming their answer is correct and they have no room for improvement. The SATIC pattern prefers neutral responses so students can receive affirmation that encourages them to think deeper. However, praise can be necessary for the overall learning experience. Current State of Interaction Patterns I noticed several behavioral patterns from my video that I was unaware of prior to analyzing my teaching. This lesson involved practicing multiplication story problems that were more difficult than the problems they are used to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Critical Angle And Total Internal Reflection Critical Angle & Total Internal Reflection Kate Graham Partner: Samantha Dekart Monday, November 9, 2015 SNC2D Ms. Vink Purpose: See attached sheet, labelled "SNC2D Lab Sheet". Related Theory: Law of Reflection: Reflection and refraction are common properties of light. When a ray of light comes into contact with the surface of some material, part of the ray is reflected and part of it is absorbed. In other words, reflection occurs when an incident ray hits a reflective surface and bounces off. The law of reflection states that the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence (always in respect to the normal) and that the incident ray, the normal line and the reflected ray are all located in the same plane. Snell 's Law of Refraction: When a ray of light reaches a boundary between two transparent mediums, reflection and refraction occur. Refraction takes place when rays of light bend across the boundary into the second medium which causes a change in the light 's velocity. The denser the medium, the slower the light. Total Internal Reflection: Internal reflection refers to light travelling from a higher index medium to a lower index medium, which causes the ray to bend away from the normal, so the exit angle is greater than the incident angle. As the angle of incidence increases, so does the angle of refraction. Total internal reflection takes place when the angle of incidence is greater than the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Steps Of Critical Thinking : Identification, Decision... , if not most, have heard of the phrase "use your critical thinking skills" but probably never truly understood what that meant and what it entails. There are seven steps that are used in critical thinking: Identification, research, analysis, application, decision making, evaluation, and reflection. The first step in the critical thinking process is identification which means exactly what the first steps is: identifying the problem or issue. The second step is research which is researching what the problem is, how it could have come about, and any possibilities to overcome the issue at hand. The third step is analysis, this means that one must analyze, or evaluate the smaller bits of the problem and piece together how everything works hand in hand with each other. The fourth step is application. Application simply means applying the general moral principles to the problem one is trying to fix, deciding which ones are most relevant to the issue, and how they conflict with each other. The fifth step of the critical thinking process is decision making. Decision making is choosing the most effective and most ethical choice from the available options and using it to fix the problem and be able to justify the decision. The sixth step to the critical thinking process is evaluation. The evaluation step not only asks the individual if the choice they made was the most effective decision; but was the decision is morally and ethically sound for their predicament. The seventh and final ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Critical Reflection And Analysis Critical reflection in education is very important because it impacts on pedagogical practices of the early childhood educators and helps in developing child agency in effective learning contexts. In this essay will explore, what critical reflection means and its key components, the process of critical reflection and reflective practice is implemented in education, what impact is has on educators and the development of child agency through critical reflection. Critical reflection what does it mean? As a result of pulling the word apart, 'critical' itself has the meaning 'important' and 'reflection' itself means 'evidence', therefore adding them together to get the meaning 'important evidence'. Educators also come to new understandings, according to Freire (1998, p.30), critical reflection on practice is a requirement of the relationship between theory and practice, each day brings a new opportunity to reform pedagogy and increase professional capacity. • 73. Reflection Of The Four Critical Thinking Process In Nursing The four critical thinking process that I would like to improve are analyzing, logical reasoning, confidence, and creativity. 1. Analyzing – is separating or breaking a whole into parts to discover their nature, function and relationships (Scheffer & Rubenfeld, 2000). Although I believe that I am somewhat deficient in analyzing, I have dependably strived to show signs of improvement in analyzing or examining the circumstance in any given situation. I have made some change a week ago that I believe will assist me in enhancing my analyzing abilities/skills. An example of how I have used analyzing to facilitate the diagnostic reasoning process was exhibited the other day when an experienced nurse floated to my unit, and one of her assigned patients was in distress. When assessing the patient, all of her vital signs were elevated, BP 234/190, P 98, RR 45, T 98.9F, 02 sat 92% on BIPAP, glucose 121, she voiced feeling of chest pain, severe headache, difficulty breathing and severe anxiety. The nurse inferred that the patient was having a panic attack and that the severe anxiety is what is causing the other symptoms to be elevated. She called the MD and request for stat Ativan order. Knowing this patient, I calmly approached her and explained to her that these signs and symptoms are new and that I believe the patient is most likely having a hypertensive crisis. She rejects my nursing judgements and voiced "what do you know? you just got here" I have 15 years of experience and I'm ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Reflection On A Critical Incident In PGCE Introduction: The way in which we reflect upon a situation, shaped by the interpretation of a significant event is defined as a critical incident (Tripp, 2011). Reflecting has been crucial within my first two phases of PGCE as I have been able to value experiences and make judgements to improve further. My home school practice was graded an 'outstanding' mainstream primary school (Ofstead, 2015), working 19 percentage points above their local authority in reading, writing and maths (School performance tables, 2017). The school's numbers are below average for free school meals in the area and they have an average percentage of special educational needs children. Pupil premium percentages are currently at 15 percent out of the 218 children on roll. This assignment will further develop critical incidents that occurred throughout phases one and two in my home school. School, subject and pedagogical knowledge incidents will be critically evaluated against theories and practice. According to Banks, Leach and Moon (2005) the professional teaching knowledge vision consists of all three of these areas. A series of conceptual frameworks have been used to critically analyse each incident further including: Brookfield's lenses, Banks Leach and Moons' model of reflection and Schon and Eraut (1995) reflection on, in and of action. I will primarily analyse my school knowledge incident. I have chosen this incident as it required me to reflect afterwards about how the situation could have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
