FMCG Pest Analysis
PEST Analysis
FMCG is considered to be fastest growing segment in India. The introduction of sachet packages
has increased penetration of products in the market has lower income people started using the
products and middle income people started growing rapidly in India. The people want to up trade
and improve there standard of living.
Political: India was initially a closed economy there was numerous restriction and laws imposed on
foreign companies in order to carry out business there, the reason because British also came as
traders and then occupied whole India, making them slaves for more than a century. Also there was
also an opposition to FDIs, they shut down the wal Mart, as the time pass the government realized
that they have slowed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Favourable government policy: the Indian government has passed the policies aimed to attaining
international competitiveness by lifting the quantitative restrictions, reducing excise duties, export
units can be set up by a government approval and use of foreign brand names.
Foreign Direct Investment: Automatic investment is approved up to 100% foreign equity/100%for
NRI and overseas the corporate bodies investments is allowed for most of the food processing sector
expected malted food and beverages and reserved for small scale industries.
 Weakness:
There is lower scope for investing in technology and achieving economies of scale, especially in
small scale and low exports.
Me to products which illegally mimic the labels of established brands. These products narrow the
scope of FMCG products in rural and semi– urban markets.
 Opportunities:
There is untapped market, changing life style of the people and rising in purchasing power of
consumers.
There is large domestic market with the population of age 25 and high consumer spending on

The Secret Lives Of Cows
Amarah Said–Ahmed Professor Aron Creller (GW)Contemporary Ethical Issues 9 December 2014
The Secret Lives of Cows For centuries the welfare of our world's animals has been an ongoing
issue. Even in our modern, civil, and advanced society animals are still treated unfairly living
horrible lives for our own "benefit". When the term animal abuse comes to mind, it often brings up
images of puppies or kittens being hit or left out on the streets to die, although this is abuse that
presents a massive ethical issue there are many others as well. Many fail to realize that at the root of
their juicy burgers, or tasty ice cream cones lays the deep dark secret life of cows. The welfare and
lives of cows on industrial factory farms that produce meat and dairy for our society present a big
contemporary ethical issue. Countless cows die every day due to the conditions, and ongoing
torment that goes on in the industrial factory farms. Although the United States has created laws to
try to help these animals, many of the laws are either vague or poorly regulated or enforced; this is
proved by the typical life of a cow used for food. From the time a cow is born to the time it dies, its
life is full of countless trials and tribulations of poor welfare and lack of rights, which is unethical in
more ways than one. Cows that live on factory farms have two purposes; they are used for either
beef or dairy. According to the National Cattlemen's Beef Association the beef industry as of 2014 is

Should Factory Dairy Farming Be Banned?
What if you were always confined to a small crate, always had your baby taken away, and when you
are done doing what someone needs you are killed? Most people don't know what happens in a
factory farm there is so much cruelty abuse of factory farming. I think factory dairy farming should
be banned because of steroid use, the conditions are awful, and the farmers are abusive. I think dairy
farms should be banned because of the use of steroids use. The Secretary General of the Pakistan
Medical Association (PMA), Karachi, Dr Qaisar Sajjad, says the injections affect humans when they
drink the milk. It lowers the immunity to Ailments such as flu, hair loss, obesity, high cholesterol
level and sometimes kidney failure are the most common result of this. This adds to my claim
because the steroids that make the cows make more milk can be harmful for humans. The steroids
also affect the cows they can have defects and look like monsters. Due to extensive genetic
manipulation, today's dairy cows produce up to 12 times ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Human Society "The Welfare of Cows in the Dairy Industry" says 50.5% of dairy farms use the
tail docking technique when the tail is cut off using nothing to numb the pain. It is to apparently to
keep milk and unders stay clean but cows use their tails to swat flies away. Without the tail cows
suffer from sever bug bites. The same article says that when dairy cows are transported using sticks
and electric probes are used. It also says if a cow suffers from a disease where the cow cant walk it
is dragged around the slaughterhouse still alive. I think we should ban factory farming because
steroid use, the conditions are awful, and the farmers are abusive. Most people would like to ignore
the fact that all this is going on but it is real. Some people think factory dairy farming is good
because it produces a lot more milk but all the milk for animals being abused. What are you doing to

Insight To Organic Dairy Farming. . Abstract. Organic Dairy
INSIGHT TO ORGANIC DAIRY FARMING
Abstract
Organic dairy farming implies raising dairy creatures on natural nourish and giving them the
entrance to pasture, alongside the confined utilization of anti–infection agents and hormones. While
natural products, vegetables, grains, and some animals have for some time been backbones of the
natural development, Organic dairy farming is a relative newcomer. With the expansion in the
mindfulness and wellbeing cognizance among purchasers, interest for natural items including milk
is expanding. The way that most natural markets and customers are in created nations and are set up
to pay a premium for natural items makes Organic Dairy farming a specialty zone with fantastic
prospects for fares. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the U.S., the introduction of the organic farming is normally credited to J.I. Rodale. The
explanations behind producing and purchasing organic food are individual and can be mind
boggling. Be that as it may, most will fall into three classifications: health, community, and
environment. The organic development is based on a central rule: healthy soils lead to healthy crops,
healthy animals, healthy humans, and a healthy planet (Pierce and Tilth, 2014). Organic crops and
animals generation concentrates on building soil organic matter and science to make a practical,
dynamic condition for delivering biological sustenance and food. Organic horticulture is
additionally observed as an approach to manage and bolster family cultivates in inclination to
faceless, constantly extending super and corporate farm models.
Organic farming is honed in 160 nations and 37.2 million hectares of agrarian land are overseen
naturally. Worldwide offers of organic food and drink achieved US$54.9 billion in 2009 (Willer and
Kilcher, 2011). 40% of the world 's natural makers are in Asia, trailed by Africa (28%) and Latin
America (16%). The nations with the most makers are India (677,257), Uganda (187,893) and
Mexico (128,862). However animal products are still a little share of the natural market, contrasted
with organic products, oats and herbs.(Willer and Kilcher, 2011).

Benefits Of Single Species Recovery Programmes
World conservation is at a crossroads of judgement making and New Zealand provides an extreme
example of issues and possible solutions. On the positive side, more than 30% of total land area in
New Zealand has been set aside for as National Parks (DOC, n.d.) and various reserved land and is
run by the Department of Conservation. Single species recovery programmes have been successful
with the use of eradication of offshore islands pests to for reintroduction of threatened onshore
species such as the Kakapo on Cod fish island. However, this is in marked contrast to biodiversity
decline with up to 50% of native birds threatened due to introduced pests such as mustelids and
possums. With legislation (Conservation Act 1987), public opinion and changes in current practices,
conservation and development might be able to coexist to a point where each can be sustainable
(Craig, 2000).
Brief history of land conservation in New Zealand till 1969
New Zealand is a special place as it was the last major land form to be settled as it is separated by
large oceans so was largely unknown. Before the first settlers arrived, the country had been isolated
for some 85 million years with the result of different plant life, large and flightless birds as well as
no ground living mammals ("Conservation – a history", n.d.).
With the early Maori and European settlers bringing in mammals for sport and food, this had a
devastating effect on the endemic wildlife population with up to 40% of species

We Must Stop The Slaughter House
Imagine from the moment you are born you are taken away from your mother, mutilated without
anesthesia, and forced into a small cage that is already over capacity. From then on you almost
never get to leave this cage this is where you will spend the rest of your days. You are beaten,
thrown around, and even electrocuted until a certain day, the reason you were born, is here. Today is
the day you are going to be slaughtered. You are crammed into a truck, feeling fresh air for the first
time, for transportation with many others and then taken to the slaughter house. Once inside you are
put into a tight shoot and stunned many times to try and make the process more "humane" to no
avail. You are pushed through the shoot to a scalding tank that is used to soften your skin and
remove your hair, most likely happening while still conscious. This is how you die. Being
mistreated until the very end and dying a very painful death and never knowing why this is
happening to you. This is the kind of suffering that farm animals go through until their life is ripped
away from them. These horrors tell us that animals are being treated inhumanly on farms so that
companies can make a profit. Cutting corners by not following the proper slaughter procedure and
keeping animals in cages, not allowing them to roam freely allows large companies to produce meat
at a cheaper cost then sell it to other businesses for a large profit. My question that I hope to answer
in this paper will be: is there

Should We Eat The Meat?
Should we put the Eat in Meat?
All over the world, people sit down to a meal that include of steak, pork chops or chicken. It is not
too often these days that the consumer considers the life of the animal in which they are eating. It is
also not common to even associate the slab of beef on one's plate with an actual living, breathing,
feeling cow. When one hears cow, images of luscious green fields with spotted cows mooing and
grazing peacefully fill your mind; and this is how many of our society think cattle are raised for
consumption. Instead, cattle are "raised" in what can be described as holding pens, over crowded
stalls with no room to move. Often times, these cows don't even make it past their first few days of
life before being brutally slaughtered. In his article, On Eating Animals, Namit Arora suggests that
Americans have something wrong with our way of thinking when it comes to animals. We treat our
domesticated pets with love and care as we would a family member; but turn a blind eye to the
tortured animals we eat every day. Where do we draw the line on what is okay to do to one living
creature and what is considered archaic to do to another? While eating meat is not a crime, or even a
bad thing, considering God gave humanity the animals to eat after the floods (Genesis 9, The Bible);
is the treatment of said animals something we should consider before we fire up that grill?
For many centuries, families raised their own livestock for the primary purpose of

The Pros And Cons Of Animal Testing
Like Regan, I also regard myself as an advocate for animal rights, and therefore part of the animal
rights movement. The torture and killing of innocent non–human animals needs to be stopped; this
includes animal testing for biomedical research and in science, commercial animal agriculture, and
fur farming. The termination of these lives is extremely cruel. But most of all, Animals are viewed
as only existing for mankind and this is major flaw. As Regan stated, "the fundamental wrong is the
system that allows us to view animals as our resources, here for us." When crossed with ethics, it
creates a dilemma. The use of animals as a resource for human needs is not necessary. Some argue
animal testing is imperative to further scientific knowledge and without it mankind will be at a
disadvantage. Though, animal testing cannot predict the complexity of human diseases. By testing
on another species, there is solely evidence on that specific species. Many factors contribute to the
complexity of human diseases such as genes, medical history, and environment. This proves the
knowledge gained from these experiments is unreliable. There are over 7,000 chemicals approved
safe for use in cosmetics. This is enough chemicals to formulate thousands of new products.
Companies that choose to test on animal subjects do so to innovate new chemicals for their
products. Many times, these chemicals are cheaper and create a greater profit margin for their
company. New chemicals are harsh,

American Dream And Anaerobic Digesters
Sixty thousand pounds of wet manure is produced each day by the five thousand cows that are
located on the George DeRuyter and Sons dairy farm in Outlook Washington (Bonneville). You
might be thinking "that's a lot of crap", well you're right! The positive to all this crap is that
something can be done with it. Anaerobic Digestion is a biological method when microorganism
hydrolyze–break down– waste material when there is no oxygen present (American 1). Anaerobic
digesters can take animal wastes, such as cow manure, and through a process break the waste down
into organic molecules that can be further hydrolyzed and used as an energy source. If further steps
are taken such as, removing carbon dioxide, nitrogen and oxygen from the substance then ... Show

In The World is Flat Freidman states that, "a lot of new middle jobs will involve collaborating with
others or orchestrating collaboration within and between companies" (285). These jobs are needed
in a globalized world because it is no longer one company completing every part of their business.
Companies are now plural meaning that there might be one for management, one for research and
design, one for marketing and one for security (Freidman 287). Each branch might also be located in
different parts of the world. Each company and employee needs to be able to work with other
counterparts effectively to have well run systems. Specifically with anaerobic digesters dairy farms
are going to have to work with science engineers, power companies, crop growers and the
community. There is another collaboration that can occur between dairy farms with digesters, this is
between these farms and businesses that process foods or waste treatment plants. Colorado State
University wrote that these collaborations can, "be beneficial by both decreasing waste solids
content and increasing methane production capacity" (Sharvelle 3). The collaboration between the
different companies allows more waste to be removed and clean energy production to increase. This
energy will have the same benefits that were listed previously, especially eliminating

Cattle Methanogens
There are currently hundreds of animals that have been genetically improved for the betterment the
species. Cattle is one of the many species that has been improved genetically for many years and
have had more than one type of improvement. One improvement made to cattle is the reduction of
flatulence. Cattle are known for their large production of methane. They eat a typical diet of grass
and hay. Methanogens help them process these foods, which are high in cellulose. Methanogens are
types of bacteria that live inside the rumen of cattle and other ruminants. The microorganisms eat
the fiber and other indigestible parts of the grasses and produce methane as a byproduct, in the same
general way that yeasts consume sugar and produce alcohol.

Behind the Scenes of Your Cup of Milk
Magazines, newspapers, and health blog posts have been talking about the unhealthy consequences
of Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) for many years. The more people grew conscious of what they
were consuming, the more they researched about their food. The usage of Bovine Growth Hormone
among the dairy industries has caught the attention of many consumers. Countless studies that were
done regarding rBGH treated milk only validated the negative effects of rBGH. Cows should not be
treated with rBGH due to the detrimental effects the hormone has on cows ' health, the potential
harmful effects it can have on consumers due to rampant antibiotic use, and the breaching of
autonomy and rights abuses of the cows treated.
"Bovine Somatotropin (BST) is commonly known as Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH).
Somatotropin is a natural hormone produced in the pituitary gland of animals. BST aids in
increasing the growth in young cattles and lactation in milk cows. rBGH is an artificial somatotropin
hormone that is created through recombinant biotechnology. When rBGH is administered to milk
cows, the milk production of the cows increase by 10 to 15 percent" (USDA, 2009). Injecting the
cows with rBGH forces the cows to lactate more–which makes them more vulnerable to mastitis
(udder infection). Mastitis causes the cows to secrete pus from their udder, hence, pus incorporated
milk. Monsanto's data

Animal Consumption By The Human Race
Mad Cowboy seeks to discuss the risks of animal consumption by the human race through the
author's (Mr. Lyman's) story of transformation from dairy farmer and cattle rancher to going vegan.
He was a fourth–generation dairy farmer and cattle rancher in Montana. Mr. Lyman's organic dairy
farm outside Great Falls, Montana was started by his grandfather and passed down through the
generations to him and his brother. He grew up on the farm and by the time he was eleven he had
learned how to milk the cows, brand and castrate the calves. At Montana State in the College of
Agriculture he learned about using pesticides, herbicides, hormones, and antibiotics for farming.
After a stint in the Army Mr. Lyman came home to help his father with the farm ... Show more

Another strong claim is in chapter six, where Lyman describes the use of Recombinant Bovine
Growth Hormone (rBGH) which is used to increase milk production. Milk production is increased
by almost eighteen percent, but drains fat from the cow. By using rBGH only thirty–five percent of
cows had calves and they had multiple births of twins and triplets. This is unusual since the chance
of twins is one in ten thousand. rBGH causes the inflammation of the udders and increase the
chance of pus in the milk. This forces farmers to uses more antibiotics. The FDA would not allow
milk producers to label their products as being free of artificial hormones unless the label also stated
"No significant difference has been shown." The International Dairy Foods Association took the
state of Vermont to court for mandating the labeling of dairy products from cows injected with
rBGH. Monsanto sent threatening letters to retailers telling them that they would be violating
federal law if they advertised that the milk they sold was rBGH free. This is a dangerous case
whereby the body that is responsible to keep people safe by ensuring they have a say in what they
consume worked to ensure the opposite. This makes me wonder who we can really trust when it
comes to the food that we buy and if the FDA does not have the

ECV Turning up the Heat in the North East
The profitability of a beef suckler herd is directly related to the number of calves reared per cow
annually. Commercial suckler herds should aim for a tighter calving period with cows producing a
viable calf every 365 days.
The average calving period for lowland suckler herd is 21 weeks, compared to the 12 week target
and reducing the calving period from 21 weeks to 12 weeks can increase revenue from extra
weaning weight by more than £2000 for a 50 cow herd.
Tighter calving periods will increase profitability. If the weaning date on the farm stays constant
then a calf born in the first 3 weeks of calving will on average have a weaning age of 230 days
weighing 309kg. A calf born in the 18th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This data is then collected, interpreted and analysed to deliver an accurate indication of breeding
potential. This data can also be used to give health and nutritional insights for the farmer in a user–
friendly format.
SCR Heatime works by monitoring the cow's activity with a unique motion–sensor tag which
records cow activity in 2 hour blocks, providing detailed data on the cow's activity levels and their
intensity.
The data is collected each time the cow passes under the ID unit, the data is transferred from the tag
to the Heatime control box using infra–red communication. This allows the base unit to be sited
close to water troughs and other well–used routes so the animal's activity data will be picked up
regularly.
The activity data is analysed by the system and separates the cow's day to day activity from oestrus
related activities. The screen shows obvious peaks when the cow is in heat and indicates the
optimum time for inseminating the cow.
In addition, SCR Heatime will highlight cows with low activity levels which can act as an early
indication that an animal requires attention. The home screen will flash up as a 'health alert' giving
the farmer early warning to possible ailments in the cow. The system also detects non–cycling cows,
allowing them to be investigated so that less fertile cows can be removed from the herd, thereby
decreasing costs.
The first SCR Heatime system has been installed through East Coast Viner's Animal

The Effects Of Nitrogen On The Dairy Industry
Nitrogen is one of the main biogeochemical elements, around which a cycle supports life on Earth.
Nitrogen can be found in many forms, one of which is nitrite, a toxic chemical that can produce
severe abnormalities in animals (Binta and Mushi, 2012). Nitrite is formed from nitrate by micro–
organisms and bacteria present in soil, water, saliva, and the large intestine of most animals. These
micro–organisms are present in high amounts in ruminants such as cows, which poses serious
implications on the dairy industry as nitrite poisoning, if nitrate levels are not closely monitored, can
lead to the death of large numbers of livestock as well as birth defects in calves. In ruminants,
nitrate is reduced to nitrite, and the rumen microbes utilize this nitrite by converting it into ammonia
as a nitrogenous source important in DNA production and synthesis of amino acids (Robson, 2007).
Though, when levels of nitrogen rise in excess, nitrite accumulates in rumen, and is then rapidly
absorbed into the bloodstream, then reacting with the ferrous form of haemoglobin to form met–
haemoglobin (met–Hb) (Sidhu et al., 2011). This is a serious issue as met–Hb is a poor transporter
of oxygen and the animal suffers from oxygen deficiency. Nitrite poisoning has become more
common over the past century as application of nitrogen fertilizer to farmland improves both quality
and yield of milk produced by cattle (Sidhu et al., 2011). Nitrogen increases the levels of crude
protein in forage, which

Effect Of The On Reproductive Health
Effect on Reproductive Health The subsequent immune suppression that is caused by infection can
be detrimental to the affected cow's reproductive health and efficiency. Since a dairy operation relies
on a steady volume of milk being produced, it is vital that cows conceive regularly in order to start
their next lactation cycle in a reasonable amount of time. Therefore, reduced reproductive efficiency
due to mastitis can become a chronic and costly problem for producers. Conception The metabolic
stress associated with mastitis can cause cows to be anovular (having an irregular ovulation cycle)
for prolonged periods of time32. Follicular growth is inhibited, which prevents ovulation and the
inflammation caused by mastitis produces higher levels of prostaglandins that interfere with
regulation of the oestrus cycle33. Hormone levels too high or too low at the wrong point in the cycle
will prevent regular oestrus and ovulation. An anovular period of approximately 40 days after
calving is normal and needed for the reproductive system to heal34. This time frame can become
longer due to infections and incur non–productivity costs to the farm. The disruption of the regular
cycle results in an increased period of time between calving and the next conception as well as an
increased number of services required to achieve conception. Research from the University of
Minnesota states that cows without mastitis become pregnant 25% faster than cows with mastitis32.
In addition, calving

The Farm Tour At La Luna Dairy Farm
On October 5th, 2017, the class went on a farm tour at La Luna Dairy Farm. This was my first time
being on a dairy farm and learning about the production of milk as I have never experienced
anything like this. On the way to the farm, Courtney was driving and I was the navigator and at
times we thought that we were lost because we were in the middle of nowhere. After missing one of
the turns and looping back, we finally made it to the farm where the class was meeting. As soon as I
open the door, the smell of manure assured me that I was in the right place. I could not get use to
smell, however, at times I would be distracted that the smell was not bothersome to me anymore.
The farm owner, Jon Slutsky, and one of his employ greeted the class and gave us a brief overview
of the farm. Jon explained that when he started the business in the 1980s, they have around 60 cows,
but today they have about 1,400 cows that they milked. The breed of cows that Jon have at the farm
is called Holstein and that his calves are born on the farm with artificial insemination. There is about
28 employees that works with Jon o take care of his cows. Eleven of the workers are in charge of
milking the cows and the rest of the workers are working to take care of the cows. A cow is milked
three times a day and it produces about 10 gallons of milk a day. When Jon realized that some of the
questions asked was going to be answered during the tour and that everyone was there, he said that

This is highly due to the fact that 70% of Pakistan population is involved in the agricultural sector
which counts for 35% of our export earnings, and thus for the sake of building a solid foundation for
development a nation must start from the bottom up. Crux of the Environmental and Economic
Problem and Providing a Solution Adapting to Biogas is an initiative that can help keep the
environment substantially cleaner by avoiding the uncontrollable release of the green house gas
methane, which is released form decomposing cow or buffalo dung. Also, since Pakistan is covered
with only 5% forestation, whereas the average country should have at least 25% forest cover, Biogas
is an alternative of wood use and will correlate with increasing forest cover since people will turn to
this renewable energy resource instead of the chopping and burning of unnecessary wood. Biogas is
also a renewable energy resource because as the dung releases the gas during the fermentation
process, after its release from the outlet of the plant it can also be reused to assist in producing gas
again, if not fully dried out. And when fully dried out, it becomes excellent and perfectly organic
fertilizer or even works as a bacteria resistant bedding for the cows/bulls, which in turn has multiple
benefits for the farmer. Biogas can also decrease the expenses incurred by poor

A Discussion of the Social Effects of Biotechnology Essay
A Discussion of the Social Effects of Biotechnology
The world of work in agriculture is in a process of rapid change. While "change" is by no means
alien to agriculture, something new has entered the arena which promises and/or threatens to
fundamentally alter agricultural practices across the globe. Biotechnology has already begun to be
implemented resulting in what may be important shifts in not only agricultural production, but
indeed changes in the very makeup of agricultural products themselves. This promises to pose
serious challenges and/or opportunities to farmers across the globe. However, this may of course
depend where it is particular farmers stand in relation to the power and socio–economic relations

By 2000, robotics, will increase planting and harvesting efficiency. But the biggest change is the
revolution of genetic engineering. Already in hundreds of trials, gene manipulation in plants has
created variations able to withstand lethal environmental conditions and pestilence. Creating new
animal "replicants" is so near on the horizon, you can't get a clear missile shot at it. Moreover,
although the United States pioneered the biotech, other countries are hot on our heels. The
implication of this race is simply put by OTA's Michael Phillips: "We've been leaders in basic
research, but adapting and getting it to industry and marketplace has proved a stumbling block. And
whoever gets to market first, wins." (Omni, New York, Jan 1993)
Keehn remarks:
The proponent's of today's genetic engineering movement say that they have brought [Rachel]
Carson's vision to life, creating in their laboratories a cornucopia of fruits, vegetables and grains
whose genetic traits have been altered, heralding the birth of a brave new world for agriculture.

focuses on a single stock of corn, growing in a desert. Underneath appears this message: "Will it

Is the treatment of said animals something to be considered before firing up that grill? God gave us
all creatures to replenish our bodies; he never said to mistreat, abuse, torment, and cruelly slaughter
these animals. One should still treat these animals with proper care and dignity, even if they are
raised for the sole purpose of nourishing the human body.
For many centuries, families raised their own livestock for the primary purpose of their
consumption. It was understood then that one can't get attached to the animals because they are not
going to be around forever. It was also understood that these animals were to be taken care of; they
were treated well and their health mattered. If the livestock was not healthy, it couldn't be
consumed, that could mean food for the winter or starvation for some families; life or death if you
will. Universally speaking, when one hears the use of antibiotics, they think something is wrong;
there is an infection to be obliterated. While this is true in some cases, it is not always the way farms
and slaughterhouse use antibiotics on their cattle. PBS.org and South Dakota State University

Robotic Milking Is Becoming A Huge Part Of The Dairy Industry
Robotic milking is becoming a huge part of the dairy industry today. Today, lactating cows are able
to choose a time in which they want to be milked, and how often they want to be milked. The
robotic milking machine will prep, milk, and post dip the cow without humans having to do the
work manually (Figure One). Robots also give the farmers additional information about each
individual cow. Farmers are able to choose which type of system flow they want for their animals,
and what they think is best for their herd. The labor for robotic milking is less intense than the labor
in tie stall/ stanchion barn, and can reduce the amount of employees the farmer has, which in return
may help save the farmer money. Many farmers are switching to this new way of milking their
cows, because of flexibility and increase in milk quality. Robotic milking is growing in the dairy
industry and becoming more popular in the United States, and we are going to start seeing more
farmers install them. When it comes to robotic milking, the farmer has different options on how they
want their cows to flow through the milking machine. Cows who are milked through a robot can
either have free access to the robot, or can be forced trafficked (also known as milk–first system), to
the robot (Munksgaard et al., 2011). When cows have free access to the robot facility, the cows are
able to access the feed and robot all hours of each and every day. They are able to walk into the
robot freely whenever the robot is

The Challenges Of Smallholder Dairy Farming Systems
Climate change and variability (CCV) is one of the greatest challenges to Smallholder Dairy
Farming Systems (SDFS) yet demand for Animal Source Foods (ASF) is projected to rise (FAO,
2011) due to population growth, urban migration coupled with increased spending in developing
countries as a result of improved incomes (Giovannucci et al., 2012). In Kenya SDFS form one of
the most important key livelihood strategies of rural communities with dominance over the national
milk sector accounting for 80% of total milk produced and a corresponding agricultural Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) of 30% (FAO, 2011a). Other factors that negatively impact SDFS include:
poor agronomic practices; reduced fodder and crop residue yields (; land fragmentation; ... Show

taurus dominated systems (Knox et al., 2012; FAO, 2011a; FAO, 2014; Kabirizi et al., 2014; Niang
et al., 2014; Thornton and Herrero, 2014). Reduced LGP is likely to trigger shifts from SDFS
(mixed crop and livestock production) to more dominant livestock based production systems with a
high probability of offsetting the food balance due to increased frequency of failure of traditionally
grown crops (Anyamba et al., 2014; Niang et al., 2014). These scenarios lead to dynamic
complexities and dynamic farming systems where SDFS test and adopt both indigenous methods
based on perceptions of CCV and modern technologies that work best for increased productivity
(Mertz et al., 2009; Below et al, 2014). According to Giovannucci et al. (2012) rural–urban
migration in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) is associated with CCV (FAO, 2015) and directly impacts
labour availability resulting to women and the elderly taking on additional and non–traditional
gendered roles that include offering social protection (WHO, 2011) thus increasing exposure to
climate related risks that further affect productivity (Beddington et al., 2012a; Giovannucci et al.,
2012; FAO, 2015). Production is further compounded by limited access and control over factors of
production (land, credit, assets, knowledge, technology and efficient extension services)
(Giovannucci et al., 2012; Antwi–Agyei et al., 2013) that aid in adaptation strategies by women who
own and manage most SDFS (FAO, 2015). Yet

Welfare Of The Dairy, Beef, And Rodeo Industry
Bovine Welfare In the Dairy, Beef, and Rodeo Industry
In the US today cattle are part of everyday culture. With more than 93 million cattle in the dairy and
beef industry, and tens of thousands in the rodeo business, cattle are definitely a huge part. Lately,
there has been many concerns with the bovine friends along with multiple misconceptions. Rodeos
may look tough on animals, and todays society is not educated well enough on the beef and dairy
industry. People don't realize that these animals are happy, healthy, and very well cared for.
Rodeos have been around since the day of the cowboy, they are often times credited for having
Americas true cowboys. They include great display of athleticism between a cowboy or cowgirl,
and the animals. Many rodeo events today, such as calf roping, are traditional farm and ranch
practices. Some rodeo viewers don't approve of what they see. Some people believe rodeos are too
rough on the animals and that the animals are mistreated behind closed doors. Dr. James Furman
(Beef Magazine), a professional rodeo animal practitioner, says that rodeos have strict animal
policies. Cowboys will be disqualified, and often times fined for the mistreatment of animals. (Beef
Magazine). Dr. Furman admits, "The rodeos do look tough on the animals, but ranchers take
extensive procedures to make sure their cattle are in good health. If the rodeos truly did help the
animals, would ranchers put their cattle in them." Furman also likes to add "Livestock

Cow Argumentative Essay
Cows are animals that are used to extract many things, since clothes to food. More than 9.3 million
cows were used to produce milk in the United States in 2008, and more than 2.5 million dairy cows
were slaughtered for meat. In the farms cows are forced to give birth to collect the milk because the
first milk is the best, because male calves will not grow up to produce milk, they are considered of
little value to the dairy farmer and are sold for meat. Millions of these calves are taken away to be
raised for beef. Hundreds of thousands of other male calves born into the dairy industry are raised
for veal. Cow lives all her life in a deplorable place where every day the machine extract milk from

Humans keep pets such as cats, dogs, and horses; why should farm animals be treated any
differently than how people treat their own pets? (Elizabeth Kolbert 17). Every day, millions of farm
animals are being slaughtered inhumanely by farm workers. There needs to be a stop to this. The
treatment of animals should be improved. There should be no more growth hormones given to
animals, because they cause many problems such as developmental disabilities. Living conditions
should be made appropriate, and farm animals should be given space to roam.

The Effects Of New Technology On The Agricultural Sector...
Introduction Massey University has been presented with a 'world first' robotic device that is said to
revolutionize the milking industry process, addressed to Associate Professor Bridges. Technological
advancement has transformative effects within the agricultural sector of dairy farming in New
Zealand. This review will be looking specifically at the effects of new technology which could
revolutionise milking on dairy farms through the use of robots milking cows in situ in the paddocks.
To explore the change issues related to this, this review explores its potential effects on labourers
within the farming sector, farm managing change, the relationship between farmer and animal
(farmer–cow), impact on current farming practices, and costs versus return on investment into new
technology. The study of the topics at hand are of importance, as critically assessing and informing
technological innovation processes, and to assess if both cows and farmers will lead better and
healthier lives or is the current information on automated milking systems merely formed from
consultants sales pitch (Drissen.C & Heutinck.L.H.M 2014)? There is however during the research
process it was revealed that there is a sever lack of literature on robotic milking of cows when in
situ, studies into this should be conducted to further this product. Technological advancements and

Outlaw Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone Now
For a moment, put yourself in John Elway's shoes. Imagine getting paid thousands of dollars to do a
milk promotion. Now, would you still do the promotion if you knew the milk had come from a cow
injected with hormones? The use of rBGH, Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone, has become a
concern in the dairy industry. The controversy is over whether or not the hormone is harmful to the
cows and people.
In animals and humans, there is a growth hormone produced. This protein hormone, produced in the
pituitary gland, is fundamental for normal growth, development, and health maintenance. It was
discovered sixty years ago that by injecting cows with GH, the growth hormone extracted from ...

Monsanto and the Food and Drug Administration are speaking with the same voice on this situation.
The Food and Drug Administration says, "There is 'virtually' no difference between milk from cows
injected with rBGH and cows not injected." However, virtually means almost (Rachel. "Trouble...").
Scientific evidence from the United States, England and Europe shows that complications with the
injected cows do exist. Some of the problems showing with the cattle are as follows: more pus from
infected cows' udders, more antibiotics given to cows to treat those infections, an "off" taste and
shortened shelf life due to the pus, perhaps higher fat content and lower protein content and more of
a tumor–promoting chemical known as IGF–I. This chemical has been implicated in cancers of the

Animal Cruelty Essay
The U.S is known not only for its excessive consumption of animals, but also for its numerous
suppliers of meat. The average person can go to any grocery store at any time and have the
opportunity to buy food products made from cows chickens pigs or fishes. Factory farms in the U.S
enforce the slaughter of billions of animals per year for our consumption. As a result, animal cruelty
is the price we pay for cheap meat.
A factory farm is a large, industrial operation that raises large numbers of animals for food. "Over
ninety–nine percent of farm animals in the U.S. are raised in factory farms" (American Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals 3). Which focus on profit and efficiency at the expense of
animal welfare. There are no federal laws governing and enforcing the conditions in which farmed
animals are raised. The federal law fails to protect most farm animals, state laws are these animals'
last defense. The majority of U.S. states expressly exempts farm animals, or certain standard
farming practices, from their anti–cruelty provisions, making it nearly impossible to provide even
meager protections. While in common industry use, these exempt farming practices are often
shockingly cruel. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, "
Investigations and whistleblowers have revealed abuse on farms and in slaughterhouses so horrific,
most people cannot bear to witness them" (Factory Farms 2). Despite their vast numbers and

Persuasive Essay On Immigration
A good work ethic has always been something that I have valued growing up. My father was the
living embodiment of what hard work is and what it can accomplish. He grew up doing some of the
most demanding jobs as a child of a dairy farmer in the 1970's. Although dairy farming is still a
demanding job, it used to be much more labor intensive when my father was a child. He is now
working full–time doing maintenance at a factory and works another 20 or more hours on the side
doing carpentry work. I have been working alongside my dad in and around his brother's farm as
long as I can remember. The immigration/refugee problem is one that troubles me deeply.
Immigrants come here many different ways: illegally or legally through work visas for seasonal jobs
or other forms of legal permanent immigration. The main reason for immigration to America is the
hope for a better life. A better life is only made possible if there is a stable food source and place of
residence. Both of those two fundamental problems can be solved one of two ways, government
assistance or working. Illegal immigrants should not have access to government assistance so
working becomes extremely important to them. The jobs the immigrants work tend to be lower end
because they are jobs many Americans consider themselves "too good" for or that is below their
paygrade. For many Americans, that may be true, but everyone has to start somewhere. With
agriculture being the primary employer of immigrants, it is sad we do

Conover Cattle Company Analysis
The operation I created my brand for is Conover Cattle Company. The operation is owned by my
Father, Kory Jacobsen, and my Grandfather, Allan Kuboushek. The farm started with five cows and
with a Simmental influence in 2001. Now the farm is up to 40 cow calf pairs with slightly less
Simmental interest, but a more diverse cow herd (Angus, Simmental, and Charolais). The farmland
is unique and the history surrounding the area is something I wanted to incorporate into the brand.
The farm is located on Conover Road in Ridgeway, Iowa. Conover was originally a large town,
which was meant to hold the courthouse for Winneshiek County. The town of Conover was growing
rapidly but was unexpectedly destroyed by a fire, and the courthouse was moved to Decorah, Iowa.
The farm sits about a mile away from where the old town of Conover once was. The first "c" in the
brand design stands for Conover, the second "c" means cattle, and the third "c" means company. ...

What Is Extreme Milking?

The true crimes lied within the production of our food and clothing. Mass production of animal
products often leads to careless cruelties.
Dairy cows may seem to have it easier than beef cattle, but with a closer look you will see they are
truly just a "machine" to be used. To produce the milk the cow must first be impregnated. Once
given birth, the calf is pulled away from its mother. Given that the calf is female it will stay on the
farm, but males are sent to beef or veal farms. The mother, now producing milk, will be hooked up
to a milking apparatus; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

RE: Old Mule Farms The Old Mule Farms is a cow–calf operation that provides calves for feedlots
to fatten up before being sent to packing houses and eventually sold as meet for consumers. The
current owners have been experiencing a problem with losses in revenue. The expenses that Old
Mule Farms incurred are veterinary bills, labor, nutritional supplements and minerals, and a variety

Taking into consideration that the weight of the cows is a key driver of calf weight, which in turn is
the key driver of revenue.
An Old Mule Farms average cow weight ranges between 1000 lbs. and 1400 lbs. My
recommendation is that if they were to eliminate the lighter and heavier 40% of cows respectively,
Old Mill Farms would have heavier calves to sell, resulting in higher revenues. This would also
reduce expenses each of the heavier cows has been causing. This recommended approach will
substantially reduce the expenses incurred by heavier cows, and increase the calf sell weight
produced by the lighter cows. The best approach to measuring the proper size of a cow is to use the
primary key driver of cow weight and compare the value of a calf to the cost of maintaining a cow.
The principle of diminishing marginal productivity states that as one input in the production process
is increased, there will be a point in which the addition of an input will result in smaller and smaller
benefit. We can relate this principle with the weight of cows. As more nutrients, minerals, and
forage is added to a cow the more a cow weighs. This in turn results in heavier calves. However,
when a cow begins to weigh over 1200 lbs. the weight of calves diminishes. When taking in to
account the principle of diminishing marginal utility, Old Mill Farms would be able to eliminate
their losses by restricting their cow weight to 1200

things to know when suggesting ration ingredients and his reply was simple, know the local market
and keep an eye on the prices. Consultants must know of cheap options to suggest when the
customer is looking for different feed options. After we left, we headed to Justamere farms to visit
with Terry's good friend, and client, Philip George. Terry immediately drove over to the silage pits
to show me the cornlage and haylage stores and then drove over to show me their mixed ration,
along with the hand fed hay in their bunk. While there, I took the time to inspect the health of his
cows and noticed they looked happy, healthy, and chewing their cud. He told me that by increasing
the fat content in a ration, the milk production would increase as well. I really liked looking around
Justamere because of the simplicity and organization of the dairy, however we had to get going so
we could pick up Phil and head back to Homedale to get some lunch. When we pulled into the
driveway I immediately noticed Phil's dog, a red tipped heeler. I'd never seen a dog like this, but I
really enjoyed petting him while Terry and Phil caught up on their ration price sheet.

The Effect Of Bovine Growth Hormone Injections On Cows
According to Purdue University the United States is responsible for the production of over 20
billion gallons of milk per year. This milk is either pasteurized and sold or further manufactured into
other forms of dairy such as cream cheese or ice cream. Many Americans have an unrealistic dream
of where their milk is produced; a grassy farm where the cows are able to roam freely and be milked
by hand. However, this is not the reality in America. Today, most dairy farms use machinery to milk
their cows and often leave them in cramped spaces. In order to increase the amount of milk a cow
produces, farmers have started to treat their cows with bovine growth hormone. Because of this
practice many arguments have come up to stop the use of Bovine Growth Hormone injections in
cows. This is due to the alleged side effects this milk is said to produce; for example cancer or
antibiotic insensitivity. This leaves anyone who drinks milk is potentially susceptible to these
effects. The FDA gives details of the biology of Bovine Growth Hormone. Bovine Growth Hormone
is naturally found in all animals, including humans, and enhances growth, development and health
maintenance. It was discovered that by injecting cows with the hormone, found in the pituitary
gland, then their milk production would increase. In the 1980's it became possible to mass produce
the hormone. Monsanto, Eli Lilly, Upjohn, and American Cyanamid are the four companies that
marketed bovine growth hormone. Monsanto

Another benefit is that to a consumer on the outside looking in, the system is well rounded, and it's
easy to see the cows are happy and healthy. But what motivates the cattle to enter the Astronaut?
Cows begin learning to enter stalls like this early in their life– and it all revolves around one thing.
Food! At six days old the calves enter a small stall to get their milk. This then turns into bigger
stalls, where full grown cows eat their daily feed. When it's time to learn how to enter the Astronaut,
where nutrient–rich concentrates and relief from a full udder awaits, it's usually no problem getting
the cows inside. The secret here is association, a fairly simple idea that goes all the way back to the
1890's with Pavlov and his dogs. Once the cattle learn to associate the milking stall with only good
things, they're willing to enter by themselves, without the usual poking and prodding of a directed
cow system, making things much easier for both the people and the cattle involved. Getting inside
the Astronaut is not a problem either. Cows prefer a straight, uncomplicated route, and Lely has
designed the I–flow just for that purpose. Although it sounds like an app for your iPhone, the I–flow
has reduced milking time by 4% and has increased the average milk per cow

Feedlots are managed facilities where livestock, notably beef cattle, are confined to produce beef for
Australian consumers. They aim to increase the amount of meat each animal produces to meet the
growing demands of the Australian export market. Associated with the process of confining cattle,
are a number of detrimental effects and ethical issues, such as the number of hormones being
introduced into the cattle's diets. Hormones are chemical substances made by cells in one part of the

rBGH is a synthetic cow hormone that acts on the mammary gland to help it take up more nutrients
from the bloodstream and therefore increase milk production. To stimulate this production of milk,
another hormone, known as insulin–like growth factor (IGF–1) is additionally increased. IGF–1
subsequently stimulates growth in cells throughout the cattle's body, leading to unnatural
development rates, strengthening of tissues and building of the muscle tissue. If increased
dramatically, IGF–1 may influence the development of certain tumours when consumed by humans.
Originating within tissues, cancer cells continue to grow and divide, becoming, over time,
increasingly less dependent to the signals from other cells. These cells may become resistant to cell
death – apoptosis – and continue to divide whilst metastasising to new sites within the body. It is
this greater concern of uncontrolled cell division that the issue of feedlots producing meat with
unacceptable levels of hormones is raised to the Australian public. Evidently, many issues are
associated with the management of feedlots and the procedures used to ingest cattle with
unacceptable levels of hormones. Indicated previously, injecting high levels of rBGH into cattle can
lead to the increase in IGF–1, a hormone that has been associated with an increased risk of breast,

more than 20,000 male physicians. In this study, those who consumed over two servings of dairy a

  • 2. The Secret Lives Of Cows Amarah Said–Ahmed Professor Aron Creller (GW)Contemporary Ethical Issues 9 December 2014 The Secret Lives of Cows For centuries the welfare of our world's animals has been an ongoing issue. Even in our modern, civil, and advanced society animals are still treated unfairly living horrible lives for our own "benefit". When the term animal abuse comes to mind, it often brings up images of puppies or kittens being hit or left out on the streets to die, although this is abuse that presents a massive ethical issue there are many others as well. Many fail to realize that at the root of their juicy burgers, or tasty ice cream cones lays the deep dark secret life of cows. The welfare and lives of cows on industrial factory farms that produce meat and dairy for our society present a big contemporary ethical issue. Countless cows die every day due to the conditions, and ongoing torment that goes on in the industrial factory farms. Although the United States has created laws to try to help these animals, many of the laws are either vague or poorly regulated or enforced; this is proved by the typical life of a cow used for food. From the time a cow is born to the time it dies, its life is full of countless trials and tribulations of poor welfare and lack of rights, which is unethical in more ways than one. Cows that live on factory farms have two purposes; they are used for either beef or dairy. According to the National Cattlemen's Beef Association the beef industry as of 2014 is a ... • 3. Should Factory Dairy Farming Be Banned? What if you were always confined to a small crate, always had your baby taken away, and when you are done doing what someone needs you are killed? Most people don't know what happens in a factory farm there is so much cruelty abuse of factory farming. I think factory dairy farming should be banned because of steroid use, the conditions are awful, and the farmers are abusive. I think dairy farms should be banned because of the use of steroids use. The Secretary General of the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), Karachi, Dr Qaisar Sajjad, says the injections affect humans when they drink the milk. It lowers the immunity to Ailments such as flu, hair loss, obesity, high cholesterol level and sometimes kidney failure are the most common result of this. This adds to my claim because the steroids that make the cows make more milk can be harmful for humans. The steroids also affect the cows they can have defects and look like monsters. Due to extensive genetic manipulation, today's dairy cows produce up to 12 times ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Human Society "The Welfare of Cows in the Dairy Industry" says 50.5% of dairy farms use the tail docking technique when the tail is cut off using nothing to numb the pain. It is to apparently to keep milk and unders stay clean but cows use their tails to swat flies away. Without the tail cows suffer from sever bug bites. The same article says that when dairy cows are transported using sticks and electric probes are used. It also says if a cow suffers from a disease where the cow cant walk it is dragged around the slaughterhouse still alive. I think we should ban factory farming because steroid use, the conditions are awful, and the farmers are abusive. Most people would like to ignore the fact that all this is going on but it is real. Some people think factory dairy farming is good because it produces a lot more milk but all the milk for animals being abused. What are you doing to stop ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Organic Dairy INSIGHT TO ORGANIC DAIRY FARMING Abstract Organic dairy farming implies raising dairy creatures on natural nourish and giving them the entrance to pasture, alongside the confined utilization of anti–infection agents and hormones. While natural products, vegetables, grains, and some animals have for some time been backbones of the natural development, Organic dairy farming is a relative newcomer. With the expansion in the mindfulness and wellbeing cognizance among purchasers, interest for natural items including milk is expanding. The explanations behind producing and purchasing organic food are individual and can be mind boggling. Be that as it may, most will fall into three classifications: health, community, and environment. The organic development is based on a central rule: healthy soils lead to healthy crops, healthy animals, healthy humans, and a healthy planet (Pierce and Tilth, 2014). Organic crops and animals generation concentrates on building soil organic matter and science to make a practical, dynamic condition for delivering biological sustenance and food. • 5. Benefits Of Single Species Recovery Programmes World conservation is at a crossroads of judgement making and New Zealand provides an extreme example of issues and possible solutions. On the positive side, more than 30% of total land area in New Zealand has been set aside for as National Parks (DOC, n.d.) and various reserved land and is run by the Department of Conservation. Single species recovery programmes have been successful with the use of eradication of offshore islands pests to for reintroduction of threatened onshore species such as the Kakapo on Cod fish island. However, this is in marked contrast to biodiversity decline with up to 50% of native birds threatened due to introduced pests such as mustelids and possums. With legislation (Conservation Act 1987), public opinion and changes in current practices, conservation and development might be able to coexist to a point where each can be sustainable (Craig, 2000). Brief history of land conservation in New Zealand till 1969 New Zealand is a special place as it was the last major land form to be settled as it is separated by large oceans so was largely unknown. Before the first settlers arrived, the country had been isolated for some 85 million years with the result of different plant life, large and flightless birds as well as no ground living mammals ("Conservation – a history", n.d.). With the early Maori and European settlers bringing in mammals for sport and food, this had a devastating effect on the endemic wildlife population with up to 40% of species ... • 6. We Must Stop The Slaughter House Imagine from the moment you are born you are taken away from your mother, mutilated without anesthesia, and forced into a small cage that is already over capacity. From then on you almost never get to leave this cage this is where you will spend the rest of your days. You are beaten, thrown around, and even electrocuted until a certain day, the reason you were born, is here. Today is the day you are going to be slaughtered. You are crammed into a truck, feeling fresh air for the first time, for transportation with many others and then taken to the slaughter house. Once inside you are put into a tight shoot and stunned many times to try and make the process more "humane" to no avail. You are pushed through the shoot to a scalding tank that is used to soften your skin and remove your hair, most likely happening while still conscious. This is how you die. Being mistreated until the very end and dying a very painful death and never knowing why this is happening to you. This is the kind of suffering that farm animals go through until their life is ripped away from them. These horrors tell us that animals are being treated inhumanly on farms so that companies can make a profit. Cutting corners by not following the proper slaughter procedure and keeping animals in cages, not allowing them to roam freely allows large companies to produce meat at a cheaper cost then sell it to other businesses for a large profit. My question that I hope to answer in this paper will be: is there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Should We Eat The Meat? Should we put the Eat in Meat? All over the world, people sit down to a meal that include of steak, pork chops or chicken. It is not too often these days that the consumer considers the life of the animal in which they are eating. It is also not common to even associate the slab of beef on one's plate with an actual living, breathing, feeling cow. When one hears cow, images of luscious green fields with spotted cows mooing and grazing peacefully fill your mind; and this is how many of our society think cattle are raised for consumption. Instead, cattle are "raised" in what can be described as holding pens, over crowded stalls with no room to move. Often times, these cows don't even make it past their first few days of life before being brutally slaughtered. In his article, On Eating Animals, Namit Arora suggests that Americans have something wrong with our way of thinking when it comes to animals. We treat our domesticated pets with love and care as we would a family member; but turn a blind eye to the tortured animals we eat every day. Where do we draw the line on what is okay to do to one living creature and what is considered archaic to do to another? While eating meat is not a crime, or even a bad thing, considering God gave humanity the animals to eat after the floods (Genesis 9, The Bible); is the treatment of said animals something we should consider before we fire up that grill? For many centuries, families raised their own livestock for the primary purpose of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Pros And Cons Of Animal Testing Like Regan, I also regard myself as an advocate for animal rights, and therefore part of the animal rights movement. The torture and killing of innocent non–human animals needs to be stopped; this includes animal testing for biomedical research and in science, commercial animal agriculture, and fur farming. The termination of these lives is extremely cruel. But most of all, Animals are viewed as only existing for mankind and this is major flaw. As Regan stated, "the fundamental wrong is the system that allows us to view animals as our resources, here for us." When crossed with ethics, it creates a dilemma. The use of animals as a resource for human needs is not necessary. Some argue animal testing is imperative to further scientific knowledge and without it mankind will be at a disadvantage. Though, animal testing cannot predict the complexity of human diseases. By testing on another species, there is solely evidence on that specific species. Many factors contribute to the complexity of human diseases such as genes, medical history, and environment. This proves the knowledge gained from these experiments is unreliable. There are over 7,000 chemicals approved safe for use in cosmetics. This is enough chemicals to formulate thousands of new products. Companies that choose to test on animal subjects do so to innovate new chemicals for their products. Many times, these chemicals are cheaper and create a greater profit margin for their company. New chemicals are harsh, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. American Dream And Anaerobic Digesters Sixty thousand pounds of wet manure is produced each day by the five thousand cows that are located on the George DeRuyter and Sons dairy farm in Outlook Washington (Bonneville). You might be thinking "that's a lot of crap", well you're right! The positive to all this crap is that something can be done with it. Anaerobic Digestion is a biological method when microorganism hydrolyze–break down– waste material when there is no oxygen present (American 1). Anaerobic digesters can take animal wastes, such as cow manure, and through a process break the waste down into organic molecules that can be further hydrolyzed and used as an energy source. If further steps are taken such as, removing carbon dioxide, nitrogen and oxygen from the substance then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The World is Flat Freidman states that, "a lot of new middle jobs will involve collaborating with others or orchestrating collaboration within and between companies" (285). These jobs are needed in a globalized world because it is no longer one company completing every part of their business. Companies are now plural meaning that there might be one for management, one for research and design, one for marketing and one for security (Freidman 287). Each branch might also be located in different parts of the world. Each company and employee needs to be able to work with other counterparts effectively to have well run systems. Specifically with anaerobic digesters dairy farms are going to have to work with science engineers, power companies, crop growers and the community. There is another collaboration that can occur between dairy farms with digesters, this is between these farms and businesses that process foods or waste treatment plants. Colorado State University wrote that these collaborations can, "be beneficial by both decreasing waste solids content and increasing methane production capacity" (Sharvelle 3). The collaboration between the different companies allows more waste to be removed and clean energy production to increase. This energy will have the same benefits that were listed previously, especially eliminating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cattle is one of the many species that has been improved genetically for many years and have had more than one type of improvement. One improvement made to cattle is the reduction of flatulence. Cattle are known for their large production of methane. They eat a typical diet of grass and hay. Methanogens help them process these foods, which are high in cellulose. Methanogens are types of bacteria that live inside the rumen of cattle and other ruminants. The microorganisms eat the fiber and other indigestible parts of the grasses and produce methane as a byproduct, in the same general way that yeasts consume sugar and produce alcohol. ... • 11. The Scenes Of Your Cup Of Milk Christine Lee Professor Lynn Dowdy Biology 100 16 October 2015 Behind the Scenes of Your Cup of Milk Magazines, newspapers, and health blog posts have been talking about the unhealthy consequences of Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) for many years. The more people grew conscious of what they were consuming, the more they researched about their food. The usage of Bovine Growth Hormone among the dairy industries has caught the attention of many consumers. Countless studies that were done regarding rBGH treated milk only validated the negative effects of rBGH. Cows should not be treated with rBGH due to the detrimental effects the hormone has on cows ' health, the potential harmful effects it can have on consumers due to rampant antibiotic use, and the breaching of autonomy and rights abuses of the cows treated. "Bovine Somatotropin (BST) is commonly known as Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH). Somatotropin is a natural hormone produced in the pituitary gland of animals. BST aids in increasing the growth in young cattles and lactation in milk cows. rBGH is an artificial somatotropin hormone that is created through recombinant biotechnology. When rBGH is administered to milk cows, the milk production of the cows increase by 10 to 15 percent" (USDA, 2009). Injecting the cows with rBGH forces the cows to lactate more–which makes them more vulnerable to mastitis (udder infection). Mastitis causes the cows to secrete pus from their udder, hence, pus incorporated milk. Monsanto's data ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Animal Consumption By The Human Race Mad Cowboy seeks to discuss the risks of animal consumption by the human race through the author's (Mr. Lyman's) story of transformation from dairy farmer and cattle rancher to going vegan. He was a fourth–generation dairy farmer and cattle rancher in Montana. Mr. Lyman's organic dairy farm outside Great Falls, Montana was started by his grandfather and passed down through the generations to him and his brother. He grew up on the farm and by the time he was eleven he had learned how to milk the cows, brand and castrate the calves. At Montana State in the College of Agriculture he learned about using pesticides, herbicides, hormones, and antibiotics for farming. After a stint in the Army Mr. Lyman came home to help his father with the farm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another strong claim is in chapter six, where Lyman describes the use of Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) which is used to increase milk production. Milk production is increased by almost eighteen percent, but drains fat from the cow. By using rBGH only thirty–five percent of cows had calves and they had multiple births of twins and triplets. This is unusual since the chance of twins is one in ten thousand. rBGH causes the inflammation of the udders and increase the chance of pus in the milk. This forces farmers to uses more antibiotics. The FDA would not allow milk producers to label their products as being free of artificial hormones unless the label also stated "No significant difference has been shown." The International Dairy Foods Association took the state of Vermont to court for mandating the labeling of dairy products from cows injected with rBGH. Monsanto sent threatening letters to retailers telling them that they would be violating federal law if they advertised that the milk they sold was rBGH free. This is a dangerous case whereby the body that is responsible to keep people safe by ensuring they have a say in what they consume worked to ensure the opposite. • 13. Business Planning ECV Turning up the Heat in the North East The profitability of a beef suckler herd is directly related to the number of calves reared per cow annually. Commercial suckler herds should aim for a tighter calving period with cows producing a viable calf every 365 days. The average calving period for lowland suckler herd is 21 weeks, compared to the 12 week target and reducing the calving period from 21 weeks to 12 weeks can increase revenue from extra weaning weight by more than £2000 for a 50 cow herd. Tighter calving periods will increase profitability. This data can also be used to give health and nutritional insights for the farmer in a user– friendly format. SCR Heatime works by monitoring the cow's activity with a unique motion–sensor tag which records cow activity in 2 hour blocks, providing detailed data on the cow's activity levels and their intensity. The data is collected each time the cow passes under the ID unit, the data is transferred from the tag to the Heatime control box using infra–red communication. This allows the base unit to be sited close to water troughs and other well–used routes so the animal's activity data will be picked up regularly. The activity data is analysed by the system and separates the cow's day to day activity from oestrus related activities. The screen shows obvious peaks when the cow is in heat and indicates the optimum time for inseminating the cow. In addition, SCR Heatime will highlight cows with low activity levels which can act as an early indication that an animal requires attention. The home screen will flash up as a 'health alert' giving the farmer early warning to possible ailments in the cow. The system also detects non–cycling cows, allowing them to be investigated so that less fertile cows can be removed from the herd, thereby decreasing costs. • 14. The Effects Of Nitrogen On The Dairy Industry Nitrogen is one of the main biogeochemical elements, around which a cycle supports life on Earth. Nitrogen can be found in many forms, one of which is nitrite, a toxic chemical that can produce severe abnormalities in animals (Binta and Mushi, 2012). Nitrite is formed from nitrate by micro– organisms and bacteria present in soil, water, saliva, and the large intestine of most animals. These micro–organisms are present in high amounts in ruminants such as cows, which poses serious implications on the dairy industry as nitrite poisoning, if nitrate levels are not closely monitored, can lead to the death of large numbers of livestock as well as birth defects in calves. In ruminants, nitrate is reduced to nitrite, and the rumen microbes utilize this nitrite by converting it into ammonia as a nitrogenous source important in DNA production and synthesis of amino acids (Robson, 2007). Though, when levels of nitrogen rise in excess, nitrite accumulates in rumen, and is then rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, then reacting with the ferrous form of haemoglobin to form met– haemoglobin (met–Hb) (Sidhu et al., 2011). This is a serious issue as met–Hb is a poor transporter of oxygen and the animal suffers from oxygen deficiency. Nitrite poisoning has become more common over the past century as application of nitrogen fertilizer to farmland improves both quality and yield of milk produced by cattle (Sidhu et al., 2011). Nitrogen increases the levels of crude protein in forage, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Effect Of The On Reproductive Health Effect on Reproductive Health The subsequent immune suppression that is caused by infection can be detrimental to the affected cow's reproductive health and efficiency. Since a dairy operation relies on a steady volume of milk being produced, it is vital that cows conceive regularly in order to start their next lactation cycle in a reasonable amount of time. Therefore, reduced reproductive efficiency due to mastitis can become a chronic and costly problem for producers. Conception The metabolic stress associated with mastitis can cause cows to be anovular (having an irregular ovulation cycle) for prolonged periods of time32. Follicular growth is inhibited, which prevents ovulation and the inflammation caused by mastitis produces higher levels of prostaglandins that interfere with regulation of the oestrus cycle33. Hormone levels too high or too low at the wrong point in the cycle will prevent regular oestrus and ovulation. An anovular period of approximately 40 days after calving is normal and needed for the reproductive system to heal34. This time frame can become longer due to infections and incur non–productivity costs to the farm. The disruption of the regular cycle results in an increased period of time between calving and the next conception as well as an increased number of services required to achieve conception. Research from the University of Minnesota states that cows without mastitis become pregnant 25% faster than cows with mastitis32. In addition, calving ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This was my first time being on a dairy farm and learning about the production of milk as I have never experienced anything like this. On the way to the farm, Courtney was driving and I was the navigator and at times we thought that we were lost because we were in the middle of nowhere. After missing one of the turns and looping back, we finally made it to the farm where the class was meeting. As soon as I open the door, the smell of manure assured me that I was in the right place. I could not get use to smell, however, at times I would be distracted that the smell was not bothersome to me anymore. The farm owner, Jon Slutsky, and one of his employ greeted the class and gave us a brief overview of the farm. Jon explained that when he started the business in the 1980s, they have around 60 cows, but today they have about 1,400 cows that they milked. The breed of cows that Jon have at the farm is called Holstein and that his calves are born on the farm with artificial insemination. There is about 28 employees that works with Jon o take care of his cows. Eleven of the workers are in charge of milking the cows and the rest of the workers are working to take care of the cows. Crux of the Environmental and Economic Problem and Providing a Solution Adapting to Biogas is an initiative that can help keep the environment substantially cleaner by avoiding the uncontrollable release of the green house gas methane, which is released form decomposing cow or buffalo dung. Also, since Pakistan is covered with only 5% forestation, whereas the average country should have at least 25% forest cover, Biogas is an alternative of wood use and will correlate with increasing forest cover since people will turn to this renewable energy resource instead of the chopping and burning of unnecessary wood. Biogas is also a renewable energy resource because as the dung releases the gas during the fermentation process, after its release from the outlet of the plant it can also be reused to assist in producing gas again, if not fully dried out. While "change" is by no means alien to agriculture, something new has entered the arena which promises and/or threatens to fundamentally alter agricultural practices across the globe. Biotechnology has already begun to be implemented resulting in what may be important shifts in not only agricultural production, but indeed changes in the very makeup of agricultural products themselves. • 21. Robotic Milking Is Becoming A Huge Part Of The Dairy Industry Robotic milking is becoming a huge part of the dairy industry today. Today, lactating cows are able to choose a time in which they want to be milked, and how often they want to be milked. The robotic milking machine will prep, milk, and post dip the cow without humans having to do the work manually (Figure One). Robots also give the farmers additional information about each individual cow. Farmers are able to choose which type of system flow they want for their animals, and what they think is best for their herd. The labor for robotic milking is less intense than the labor in tie stall/ stanchion barn, and can reduce the amount of employees the farmer has, which in return may help save the farmer money. Many farmers are switching to this new way of milking their cows, because of flexibility and increase in milk quality. Robotic milking is growing in the dairy industry and becoming more popular in the United States, and we are going to start seeing more farmers install them. When it comes to robotic milking, the farmer has different options on how they want their cows to flow through the milking machine. Cows who are milked through a robot can either have free access to the robot, or can be forced trafficked (also known as milk–first system), to the robot (Munksgaard et al., 2011). Reduced LGP is likely to trigger shifts from SDFS (mixed crop and livestock production) to more dominant livestock based production systems with a high probability of offsetting the food balance due to increased frequency of failure of traditionally grown crops (Anyamba et al., 2014; Niang et al., 2014). These scenarios lead to dynamic complexities and dynamic farming systems where SDFS test and adopt both indigenous methods based on perceptions of CCV and modern technologies that work best for increased productivity (Mertz et al., 2009; Below et al, 2014). With more than 93 million cattle in the dairy and beef industry, and tens of thousands in the rodeo business, cattle are definitely a huge part. Lately, there has been many concerns with the bovine friends along with multiple misconceptions. Rodeos may look tough on animals, and todays society is not educated well enough on the beef and dairy industry. People don't realize that these animals are happy, healthy, and very well cared for. Rodeos have been around since the day of the cowboy, they are often times credited for having Americas true cowboys. They include great display of athleticism between a cowboy or cowgirl, and the animals. Many rodeo events today, such as calf roping, are traditional farm and ranch practices. Some rodeo viewers don't approve of what they see. Some people believe rodeos are too rough on the animals and that the animals are mistreated behind closed doors. Dr. James Furman (Beef Magazine), a professional rodeo animal practitioner, says that rodeos have strict animal policies. Cowboys will be disqualified, and often times fined for the mistreatment of animals. (Beef Magazine). Introduction Massey University has been presented with a 'world first' robotic device that is said to revolutionize the milking industry process, addressed to Associate Professor Bridges. Technological advancement has transformative effects within the agricultural sector of dairy farming in New Zealand. This review will be looking specifically at the effects of new technology which could revolutionise milking on dairy farms through the use of robots milking cows in situ in the paddocks. To explore the change issues related to this, this review explores its potential effects on labourers within the farming sector, farm managing change, the relationship between farmer and animal (farmer–cow), impact on current farming practices, and costs versus return on investment into new technology. The study of the topics at hand are of importance, as critically assessing and informing technological innovation processes, and to assess if both cows and farmers will lead better and healthier lives or is the current information on automated milking systems merely formed from consultants sales pitch (Drissen.C & Heutinck.L.H.M 2014)? Immigrants come here many different ways: illegally or legally through work visas for seasonal jobs or other forms of legal permanent immigration. The main reason for immigration to America is the hope for a better life. A better life is only made possible if there is a stable food source and place of residence. Both of those two fundamental problems can be solved one of two ways, government assistance or working. Illegal immigrants should not have access to government assistance so working becomes extremely important to them. The jobs the immigrants work tend to be lower end because they are jobs many Americans consider themselves "too good" for or that is below their paygrade. The forage is primarily grazed grasses but is supplemented with hay. The owners of the farm have found a correlation between the weight of a cow, and the cost of feeding it, in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Taking into consideration that the weight of the cows is a key driver of calf weight, which in turn is the key driver of revenue. An Old Mule Farms average cow weight ranges between 1000 lbs. and 1400 lbs. My recommendation is that if they were to eliminate the lighter and heavier 40% of cows respectively, Old Mill Farms would have heavier calves to sell, resulting in higher revenues. This would also reduce expenses each of the heavier cows has been causing. This recommended approach will substantially reduce the expenses incurred by heavier cows, and increase the calf sell weight produced by the lighter cows. The best approach to measuring the proper size of a cow is to use the primary key driver of cow weight and compare the value of a calf to the cost of maintaining a cow. The principle of diminishing marginal productivity states that as one input in the production process is increased, there will be a point in which the addition of an input will result in smaller and smaller benefit. We can relate this principle with the weight of cows. As more nutrients, minerals, and forage is added to a cow the more a cow weighs. This in turn results in heavier calves. However, when a cow begins to weigh over 1200 lbs. the weight of calves diminishes. When taking in to account the principle of diminishing marginal utility, Old Mill Farms would be able to eliminate their losses by restricting their cow weight to 1200 ... • 32. Observation Report As I was leaving the high school to shadow Terry Mc Intosh, I was eager to experience cattle nutrition on small family dairies. Terry had told me he doesn't work as much as he had so I assumed he did private consulting–a few minutes into meeting with Terry in Homedale and a firm handshake later my assumptions were confirmed. I got into his pickup and awaited the awesome job shadow to come. Immediately Terry told me that when planning for my future never go after the money, go after my passion instead. He'd went to Oregon State to become a vet, but upon receiving his undergrad he went into nutrition. It wasn't until years later he found his passion for flying planes, but had to quit when health problems arose. I really appreciated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Terry took this time to tell me about the price sheets he was handing out, and about the technology he was utilizing to help him keep prices straight. I don't quite understand how the software works, but was intrigued by how it seemed to make Terry's job much simpler. I asked him about some good things to know when suggesting ration ingredients and his reply was simple, know the local market and keep an eye on the prices. Consultants must know of cheap options to suggest when the customer is looking for different feed options. After we left, we headed to Justamere farms to visit with Terry's good friend, and client, Philip George. Terry immediately drove over to the silage pits to show me the cornlage and haylage stores and then drove over to show me their mixed ration, along with the hand fed hay in their bunk. While there, I took the time to inspect the health of his cows and noticed they looked happy, healthy, and chewing their cud. He told me that by increasing the fat content in a ration, the milk production would increase as well. I really liked looking around Justamere because of the simplicity and organization of the dairy, however we had to get going so we could pick up Phil and head back to Homedale to get some lunch. When we pulled into the driveway I immediately noticed Phil's dog, a red tipped heeler. I'd never seen a dog like this, but I really enjoyed petting him while Terry and Phil caught up on their ration price sheet. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The Effect Of Bovine Growth Hormone Injections On Cows According to Purdue University the United States is responsible for the production of over 20 billion gallons of milk per year. This milk is either pasteurized and sold or further manufactured into other forms of dairy such as cream cheese or ice cream. Many Americans have an unrealistic dream of where their milk is produced; a grassy farm where the cows are able to roam freely and be milked by hand. However, this is not the reality in America. Today, most dairy farms use machinery to milk their cows and often leave them in cramped spaces. In order to increase the amount of milk a cow produces, farmers have started to treat their cows with bovine growth hormone. Because of this practice many arguments have come up to stop the use of Bovine Growth Hormone injections in cows. This is due to the alleged side effects this milk is said to produce; for example cancer or antibiotic insensitivity. This leaves anyone who drinks milk is potentially susceptible to these effects. The FDA gives details of the biology of Bovine Growth Hormone. Bovine Growth Hormone is naturally found in all animals, including humans, and enhances growth, development and health maintenance. It was discovered that by injecting cows with the hormone, found in the pituitary gland, then their milk production would increase. In the 1980's it became possible to mass produce the hormone. Monsanto, Eli Lilly, Upjohn, and American Cyanamid are the four companies that marketed bovine growth hormone. Monsanto ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. A Research On Dairy Barn Imagine your modern–day dairy barn, with your usual milk cows: manure scrapers clean the floors constantly, feed–pushers keep the feed fence ready, and tagged collars give unique insights about each cow. But beyond all of the conventional gadgetry this barn has something else: no people. This dairy barn features the Lely Astronaut, a new, reliable employee that uses the cow's behavior to cause them to enter the stall and increase their milk production, and requires almost no human help. Lely is a Dutch company founded in 1948, and since then has been one of several industry leaders committed to building revolutionary products that use simple behaviors as an advantage to both the dairy business and the cattle involved. Lely has come the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another benefit is that to a consumer on the outside looking in, the system is well rounded, and it's easy to see the cows are happy and healthy. But what motivates the cattle to enter the Astronaut? Cows begin learning to enter stalls like this early in their life– and it all revolves around one thing. Food! At six days old the calves enter a small stall to get their milk. This then turns into bigger stalls, where full grown cows eat their daily feed. When it's time to learn how to enter the Astronaut, where nutrient–rich concentrates and relief from a full udder awaits, it's usually no problem getting the cows inside. The secret here is association, a fairly simple idea that goes all the way back to the 1890's with Pavlov and his dogs. Once the cattle learn to associate the milking stall with only good things, they're willing to enter by themselves, without the usual poking and prodding of a directed cow system, making things much easier for both the people and the cattle involved. Getting inside the Astronaut is not a problem either. Cows prefer a straight, uncomplicated route, and Lely has designed the I–flow just for that purpose. Although it sounds like an app for your iPhone, the I–flow has reduced milking time by 4% and has increased the average milk per cow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The food and drug administration, commonly known as the F.D.A, is focusing much of their time with food biotechnology. With the use of this hormone, small dairy farms are beginning to diminish due to the already over populated milk market. Dairy cows are not the only animal genetically engineered. A company called Aqua Bounty industries have successfully engineered salmon to grow to market size in eighteen months rather than thirty months that it would typically take for the Atlantic salmon to reach the market weight and size. To do this, Aqua Bounty industries inject the DNA from other types of salmon and pout, another fish derived from the ocean. This causes much concern for individuals with certain fish allergies or those who are unaware of which type of fish allergies the may have. Not only are these industries trying to market off of hormone injected foods, but cloning is now in the beginning stages of entering our grocery stores. Although cloning is the exact copy of another animal, it still allows these businesses to manipulate breeds to produce animals with specific traits. Sigrid Fry–reverse believes, "because this manipulation does not affect the quality of the food produced by these cloned animals, the government should not impose regulation on the industry" (Fry–reverse 2). Cloning live stock for nutrition purposes require no distinguishing labels to separate it from non–cloned food products. As of now, the cloned animal can be used as food; ... • 36. Feedlots Essay Feedlots are managed facilities where livestock, notably beef cattle, are confined to produce beef for Australian consumers. They aim to increase the amount of meat each animal produces to meet the growing demands of the Australian export market. Associated with the process of confining cattle, are a number of detrimental effects and ethical issues, such as the number of hormones being introduced into the cattle's diets. Hormones are chemical substances made by cells in one part of the body and released to regulate responses elsewhere in the body (Marcus, 2010). Produced by pituitary glands, growth hormones regulate body composition, body fluids, muscle and bone growth and sugar and fat metabolism. Within feedlots, growth hormones are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... rBGH is a synthetic cow hormone that acts on the mammary gland to help it take up more nutrients from the bloodstream and therefore increase milk production. To stimulate this production of milk, another hormone, known as insulin–like growth factor (IGF–1) is additionally increased. IGF–1 subsequently stimulates growth in cells throughout the cattle's body, leading to unnatural development rates, strengthening of tissues and building of the muscle tissue. If increased dramatically, IGF–1 may influence the development of certain tumours when consumed by humans. Originating within tissues, cancer cells continue to grow and divide, becoming, over time, increasingly less dependent to the signals from other cells. These cells may become resistant to cell death – apoptosis – and continue to divide whilst metastasising to new sites within the body. It is this greater concern of uncontrolled cell division that the issue of feedlots producing meat with unacceptable levels of hormones is raised to the Australian public. Evidently, many issues are associated with the management of feedlots and the procedures used to ingest cattle with unacceptable levels of hormones. Indicated previously, injecting high levels of rBGH into cattle can lead to the increase in IGF–1, a hormone that has been associated with an increased risk of breast, prostate and ... • 37. Argumentative Essay On Animals Intro Prostate cancer is linked to dairy in many studies, including Harvard's Physician's Health with more than 20,000 male physicians. In this study, those who consumed over two servings of dairy a day had a 34% increased chance of developing this cancer than those who had little to none. Why is this? Why do we drink another animal's milk? Why are so many people lactose intolerant? Here's a secret: We aren't baby cows. One of the main food groups on the national food pyramid is dairy. Yes, it is nationally listed as a food group on the table, but so is meat, and people are happily vegetarian and living their lives, including myself. So, that proves humans do not need to consume any meat, but do you really need dairy, either? Think about how many people have gone vegan recently. By doing this, they are saving animals, water, the environment, and if they do it correctly, they can have clearer skin, good bones, and better health. So how does the production of dairy harm the environment? Will it really do wonders for your skin, energy, and health? And how are the animals in the dairy industry treated? What conditions are they put in? These are a few topics I will cover. First, I will talk about how humans tamper with cow's natural ways so they get can get the ingredients needed for their products. I will cover how the cows are treated, what their environment is like, and what happens to the babies and males. After this, I will explain how dairy and animal agriculture ...
