The No Child Left Behing Act
Introduction The Bush administration, as well as others, hoped to close achievement gaps and bring all
children up to a higher standard. In order to do this, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was enacted with
the hope of an extreme education reform. It requires strict accountability and assessments for schools.
This was done without proper funding and expectations that are difficult for schools and students to
reach. This act caused many problems in schools rather than fixing the problems that already existed.
Policy Formulation
The Social Problem
Many United States children are failing in the public schooling system. Students are dropping out at
alarming rates and those who stay are not properly prepared for college and careers. There are vast
achievement gaps leaving children behind that are minorities, come from low income families, are
disabled, and are English learning (U.S. Department of Education). These problems are apparent to
teachers, parents, students, employers, and society as a whole. This will leave the United States with a
workforce that is not properly educated or trained for the jobs available.
This ideology that all children regardless of income, minority, or disability should be able to receive a
quality education to prepare them for college and careers. One of the biggest causes of this
achievement gap is unequal funding. Poor, minority children are typically educated in urban schools
that receive less funding than schools in suburban areas that educate

Comparing Emile Durkheim s The Division Of Labor
In comparing Emile Durkheim s The Division of Labor in Society and readings from the The Rules of
Sociological Method to Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann s The Social Construction of Reality in
addition to Harriet Martineaus Morals and Manners, Morals of Slavery, and The Political
Nonexistence of Women, all of these authors investigate people as beings that are fundamentally
social that create the basis for society. Even though their perspectives have similar components when
it comes to fundamentally key ideas, they still tend to take different stances on viewing the individuals
involved in the process from micro and macro perspectives in order to understand the correlation
between the individual interacting with society s institutions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This author has had a particular focus on women in politics and how slaves were included in this
social structure during this time period making an effort to convey that all men are born equal and free
as her views were very radical during this time. In comparison to Martineau, Emile Durkheim
emphasizes that the division of labor is a key attribute to the social structure of society as the general
population continues to grow, people will naturally become more disciplined in specialized
professions that will ultimately create institutions as all of these specializations will work together to
benefit society. However, Durkheim does agree with Martineau to the extent that power is diffused
throughout society and ultimately belongs to the government. As government holds the ultimate
authority, punishment will be defined as a reaction as to what has violated laws that have been
instituted in order to maintain standards of moral order. Additionally, Berger and Luckmann make it
clear that it is because people are social beings, people create a society the more we interact with one
another as [man s] relationship to the surrounding environment is everywhere...structured by his own
biological constitution that people attach what they know to be the physical world and build structural
concepts that constitute our society. (Berger and Luckmann, 47.) All address to some degree, that the
social structure of society exists because we have instituted some

London Dockland Case Study
For places both rural and urban to maintain development and a strong economy they must rebrand. To
keep with the times so to speak place must continue to redevelop in a number of ways. Both areas are
at risk of becoming derelict and poverty struck if they don t regenerate.
One of the main causes of decline is a lack of employment. In many areas with one ruling industry
when the industry collapses the town is left with high levels of unemployment. As countries continue
to develop their primary and secondary sectors shrink as it becomes cheaper for TNC s to outsource
work to other cheaper countries. This among other reasons can leave towns and cities in decline as
there are no longer jobs available and people have to move away for work or stay unemployed which
has bad economic effects.
An example of this happening in an urban area is the London Docklands. In the 19th century it was
the busiest port in the world however by the 1960 s bigger boats were being used and the docks weren
t deep enough for this. The docks were closed leaving lots of derelict land, few jobs and lots of social
problems. However the docklands were successfully rebranded with the introduction of the LDDC. In
1981, the London Docklands Development Corporation set about regenerating London Docklands ...

The decline in agriculture in the UK has reduced employment and caused economic problems in rural
areas. The lack of job opportunities results in out migration of young people, resulting in an ageing
population. Eventually a spiral of decline happens as problems breed problems rebranding is needed to
break this. Attracting new business and tourists through rebranding will increase employment and
services. This will then encourage young people to stay in the area, and new people to move to the
area. In rural areas for the most part there won t be any flagship projects and community projects and
council initiatives will be the main source of

Miriam Ferguson Research Paper
Miriam Amanda Wallace Ma Ferguson (1875 1961), first woman governor of Texas, daughter of
Joseph L. and Eliza (Garrison) Wallace, was born in Bell County, Texas, on June 13, 1875. She went
to Salado College and Baylor Female College at Belton. In 1899, at the age of 24, she married James
Edward Ferguson, as well of Bell County. Mrs. Ferguson served as the first lady of Texas during the
gubernatorial terms of her husband (1915 17), who was challenged during his 2nd administration.
When James Ferguson failed to get his name on the ballot in 1924, Miriam entered the race for the
Texas governorship. Before announcing for office, she had committed her energies mostly to her
husband and two daughters. This fact, and the mixture of her first and ... Show more content on

However, after the Texas Supreme Court again rejected her husband s petition to place his name on the
ballot in 1930, she entered the gubernatorial race. In the May primary she led Ross Sterling, who then
defeated her in the August runoff. Her defeat proved fortuitous politically because Sterling, rather than
she, was blamed by the voters when Texas began to feel the full impact of the Great Depression. In
February 1932 she again declared for the governorship; she promised to lower taxes and cut state
expenditures, and condemned alleged waste, graft, and political favoritism by the Sterling controlled
highway commission. After leading Sterling in the May primary by over one hundred thousand votes,
Ma Ferguson barely won the Democratic nomination in the August primary. She then defeated the
Republican nominee, Orville Bullington, in November to secure her 2nd term as governor. Her second
administration did not engender as much controversy as the first, despite dire predictions to the
contrary by her political opponents. The fiscally conservative governor held the line on state
expenditures and even advocated a state sales tax and corporate income tax, although the state
legislature did not act on these proposals. Mrs. Ferguson continued her liberal pardoning and parole
policies, but even that action did not stir as much controversy as in her first administration since every
convict paroled or pardoned represented that much less

The Theme Of Fear In The Garden Of Beast
Fear is so deeply embedded in the human genome, as a defense mechanism. It is so old it is coded into
the oldest part of the human nervous system. Throughout history, fear has been used to manipulate
whole populations into starting wars, revolts, genocides, and discrimination. Never has that been more
true than in Adolf Hitler s Germany, his rise led to the deadliest conflict in human history, World War
II. His consolidation of power and control over the people of Germany, can be attributed to using fear
as a weapon of manipulation. In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson, follows the first American
ambassador into this dystopia, and the fear he experiences while there. Erik Larson chose to set In The
Garden of Beasts in Hitler s Berlin to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Imagine, that because of one decision that they make or not, determines if they are truly citizens, it
causes a fear that someone doesn t belong and it is a scary thought. This vote rigging is Larson taking
time to develop the setting of Germany, by showing the vice like grip that Hitler is developing on the
German people only about ten months after his ascension to chancellor. As Germany spirals into a
secret police state, people begin to worry about the omnipotent and all hearing ear of the Gestapo.
Larson shifts focus off of the Dodd s to give the reader insight into the atmosphere of Germany:
Germans grew reluctant to stay in communal ski lodges, fearing they might talk in their sleep (Larson
223). Larson makes this very plain, GErmans fear that whatever they say is being watched and
scrutinized by the government. This fear is so consuming, that Germans put off not only vacation to
ski lodges, but medical operations, as they fear they might speak negatively of Hitler while under
anesthesia. This paranoia of being caught for speaking and subsequently shot, is Larson deliberately
involving the reader in the affairs of Germany on the whole, and making the reader feel as if they too
are stuck in this dystopia. Later on Larson further develops the atmosphere of Berlin to further his
theme of fear. After a putsch of all of Germany of Nazi enemies, Dodd remarks on the tense
atmosphere in Germany, At a time when hundreds of men

Social Influences On Social And Cultural Context
In todays society, you can not turn on the tv or radio without hearing some type of denigrating remark.
Unfortunately its the cause of all the social norms. Our nation has been brainwashed by so many
factors. Such as tv, radio, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. This topic reminds me a lot of a section in
my psycology class Behavior in Social and Cultural Context . It talks about attributions within social
influences, behavior, ethnic identity, and stereotypes. Which could not fit anymore perfectly with what
is going on in the world today, and this topic.
Imagine walking into a school getting ready to teach a siminar about discrimination. You see that the
teachers have already grouped themselves by ethnicity. How would approach this? What would you
do to get your point across to the audience? this example from the book really hit me.
Once I started thinking about the statement and the questions that followed, I couldn t help but think
strictly of racism and sexism out of all the isms. I thought of this video I saw on Facebook. The video
started off with two babies, one black one white. They were happy and playing. They didn t see the
other as white or black, they just saw a little human like them. The video went on and talked about
how babies are innocent, and hoe we all started off innocent. As we grew, The ones around us

How Does Shakespeare Use Humor In Romeo And Juliet
Meagan Healey Heather Norwood ENG2D1 04 1 June 2016 Life Needs Laughter Romeo and Juliet is
one of the most famous plays written by William Shakespeare. Although the story of Romeo and Juliet
is one that is very tragic, it has some very humorous aspects that are essential to the development of
the plot and of the characters. The humorous characters, the intrigue of the the jokes and puns and the
comic relief after a tragic scene, all play a very significant role. These elements are the reason that the
play, Romeo and Juliet is continued to be read and analyzed today. Certain characters are seen as
insignificant or irrelevant in this tragic play. However, with further analysis, it is evident that minor
characters use humour to develop the plot and the main characters. Firstly, the Nurse ... Show more

Juliet is very anxious about what Romeo said to the Nurse. The Nurse teases her and sais Where is
your mother right before she reveals what Romeo said to her. This releases the tension of the readers
and builds curiosity to intrigue. The comic relief in Romeo and Juliet also drives the plot of the play.
The scenes in this tragedy alternate between serious and humorous modes. This allows the characters
to develop their emotions and to react based on the jokes and puns often told by the minor characters.
Here s such a coil! come, what says Romeo? (2.5.28). Juliet becomes very frustrated when the Nurse
uses comic relief to avoid telling her what Romeo said. This is often the outcome of comic relief in
this play. The frustration of Juliet is very amusing to the readers and the Nurse s comic relief provides
more excitement for Juliet after anticipating the answer for awhile. The Nurse in Romeo and Juliet
creates a very provoking comedy that navigates the plot. The comic relief in this play is compelling to
the readers and adds liveliness to the tragedy Romeo and

Ohio State University Student Analysis
While an undergraduate at The Ohio State University I was very active in school clubs and
recreational sports. I was the Vice President of the Portuguese Club and was a member of the
Promotions team for the local radio station. I volunteered at a dog shelter and with foster boys living
in a group home. I was also a trip leader in university and led a group of seven university students to
Atlanta, GA to work with teenagers in a low performing school. This involved handling the budget
and activities for the group. I enjoy volunteering and doing extra activities to make university life
more well rounded.
I did not have any particularly different difficulties in university. I had many of the same stresses other
people had but did not handle them as well. my desire to learn as much as I could led to me being over

In 1989, Pearl was given an unsatisfactory performance evaluation report for photographing several
young women in swimsuits in a private bedroom while filming a public safety announcement. In
1983, a woman filed a formal complaint against Pearl, alleging that he made numerous unwanted and
improper advances toward her and improperly touched her when he escorted her to and from the
hospital following her epileptic seizure. These incidents, however, all occurred well before Leonard
assumed command.
Although the incidents were described in Pearl s personnel file, at no time prior to the incident
involving Poe did Leonard review Pearl s personnel file.[2] Leonard was unaware of, and was not
informed by his predecessor[3] of, any performance or disciplinary issues involving Pearl at any time
prior to the incident involving Poe.[4] In his affidavit, Leonard indicated that it is not the policy or
practice of the CSP for supervisors newly assigned to supervisory 128*128 positions to review the
personnel, disciplinary or internal affairs files of subordinate employees without some justifiable
reason to do so. Leonard Aff. ¶ 11. Leonard also testified during his deposition that while outgoing
supervisors and their replacements may discuss informally any pending personnel problems, the CSP
had no formal policy of outgoing supervisors providing such information to their replacements.

Homo Sapien Human Evolution
Charles Darwin stated that the evolution of man would take not thousands of years but millions of
years. In the case of the human species (Homo sapien) evolutionary theory posits that this has been the
case. Human evolution begins with the primate lineage which also includes new and old world
monkeys, and apes (Phelan, 2015). It is important to note that researchers have determined that the
chimpanzee is the humans closest living relative. While, humans and chimpanzees have similar
genetic and anatomical structure which signifies a close evolution relationship, it is also important to
note the anatomical differences that distinguish Homo sapiens. Unlike chimpanzees, humans evolved
toward bipedalism, grew larger brains and eventually became bigger in size (Phelan, 2015). As
Darwin suggested human evolution has branched down for millions of years and thus has many
significant events that result in the human beings that we are today. ... Show more content on

America Needs High School Incentive Programs To Help...
Throughout the lives of individuals, everyone imagines the dream job or the job that is going to make
the most money. Most of these jobs need to make it so a higher education like college is needed to be
able to even make it in the field. College is not by any means cheap, depending on what college is
chosen, yes it can be less money but it is still thousands of dollars by the time the degree is earned.
Many people that want to go to college cannot afford it, therefore cannot reach the dream job. In order
to make college accessible to those who are truly deserving, incentive programs such as offering
financial stipends which can be earned through academic success in high school need to be offered.

This is only one thing students have to pay when going to college. Books and supplies are another
expense which can add up quickly because the books the professors require students to buy are very
expensive. Room and board is also very pricey, most of the time the colleges and universities offer
everything from the bed, to bathrooms and study areas for students. Transportation cost can also rack
up if the student lives off campus. Even if the student does live on campus, some colleges allow cars
and the students end up using them a lot for shopping or doing activities outside of college. In the
article State Financial Policies and College Student Persistence: A National Study , Rong Chen and
Edward P. St. John state that, State governments play an important role in American higher education
through the direct subsidy of public institutions. Over the last half century, however, state funding of
higher education has undergone significant changes. Traditionally, state funds for higher education
were mostly allocated to public institutions to maintain low tuition for students and to promote equal
access . In the past, the government assisted in paying for a higher education. Equal access is what
everyone wants to have because people that do not have a steady flow of income or have a small
amount of income can still go to college and maybe get a better job than working a mill for a lifetime.

Comparing Poems My Last Duchess And Porphyria s Lover
TITLE
Robert Browning s poems, My Last Duchess ( MLD ) and Porphyria s Lover ( PL ) take the form of
dramatic monologues and are striking examples of literature written in the Victorian era. Due to their
form, a great interaction is developed between the reader and narrator, with an additional oratory
effect; this allows the audience to understand a situation less ambiguously through features such as
tone. Therefore, Browning is able to present male and female characters more completely.
Furthermore, the poems accurately convey gender inequality present in Victorian society, hinting at
the lack of liberties given to women.
In MLD, Browning employs the Duke as narrator, developing the reader s perception of his
personality through use of language and literary devices. As a result, the Duke inadvertently portrays
himself as egocentric, proprietorial and at times arrogant, psychotic and paranoid. He refers to the
painting of his late wife as my last Duchess , with the possessive pronoun my indicating the Duchess
is just another of his possessions. This element of the Duke s ... Show more content on

Therefore, bias may be introduced as the narrator would not portray himself with negative facets.
Consequently, the reliability of the narrator becomes questionable. This is amplified in MLD, where
the Duke s proud nature possibly hinders the truth. In PL, Browning repetitively attempts to depict
Porphyria s lover as innocent, while in reality the murder was manic and psychotic. As a result,
uncertainty is created throughout PL, as such a narrator may be deceptive. So, the reader s perception
of Porphyria s lover might be incorrect, especially during his period of euphoria when Porphyria
appears to give herself up to him. This unreliability acts as another way for Browning to portray the
male characters, as a misleading narrator will introduce a whole range of negative

Antigone and Hobson s Choice
Although Creon and Henry Hobson may have attained their good lives by only adhering to
themselves, both demonstrate the destructive consequences of when one puts selfish intentions above
all else. Creon s downfall is contributed by his pride and unwillingness to listen to others. He realized
his fault too late and ended up losing the ones closest to him. Henry Hobson was enveloped in his
business and accumulating wealth, without acknowledging the hard work of his daughters or Willie
Mossop. The result was having lost control of his life to Maggie.
The reason for Creon s behavior is that he inherited a city that experienced destruction among the
people and he felt it was his responsibility to restore it. He attempted to maintain stability while
keeping a higher status. He first came into conflict when Antigone believed that no human law could
supersede the divine law created by the Gods. Creon decreed that Polyneices was to remain unburied
in order to punish the enemy of city and give a sense of justice to the mayhem caused by the civil war.
She decided to disobey his edict and to defend her actions in front of the chorus and the city of
Thebes. Creon did not accept the validity of her decision and was offended by her disrespect. He sees
her impudence as treason and states If you must show them friendship, go and do so down below! But

Article Analysis Of Camille Paglia s On Date Rape
On Date Rape is an article written by Camille Raglia, which argues the young women of today pay not
much attention about their safety while they re enjoying the freedom they deserve. (Paglia) According
to the author of this article, who also is a humanities professor and a cultural critic, a woman should
pay more attention to their safety while they pursuit the freedom as man does. Because a woman is
likely become a victim in a rape case. In this article, the author also implies that even the law should
protect women from the rape, but women themselves still should build up a self protection awareness
to keep them away from the rape crime. (Paglia) However, even this article points out a main
argument about self protection awareness is necessary for a woman, but some of its point didn t
support the main argument of this article. In additional, the focus of my article is about to analysis the
article of Camille Paglia, On Date Rape. Also, I ll point out some misconceptions about her work.
The first point I recognized in Paglia s article is the third paragraph of the article, which explains that
because of the young feminists come from a white, middle class world, so that they expect everything
should be safe as they think. On the other side, because the black or Hispanic women grow up in a
different environment, where full of sexual culture, therefore they will pay more attention of their

Case 1: United break guitars
In 2008, a Canadian musician known as Dave Carroll took the flight by United Airline to Nebraska in
Chicago. Carroll claimed that his guitar was broken under the United Airlines keeping and declared
that he heard another passenger say that baggage smashers at Chicago s Airport were throwing
passengers luggage on a stopover. When he made the claim in Chicago, he was told that he was not
entitled to any damages because he had not made the claim within a stipulated time. Then in the year
of 2009, Carroll came up with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those who take the threat of organizational crises seriously know that they cannot talk their way out
of things that they have directed themselves into. This proposition holds for organizations as well as
the individuals who work for them. In the case of United Airlines, both the times the organization
itself had directed towards crises, which could be averted if the compensation of the broken guitar was
paid and if the last minute change in staff travelling on plane would not have introduced.
2. NEVER lie.
We live in a world where the truth can be uncovered quickly. Being caught lying about an organization
s inappropriate actions can devastate the situation. United Airlines, misguided the customers by giving
false and different statements on media channels probably not showing the side of the picture and
covering it with cream.
3. Tell the truth and tell it quickly.
Generally, organizations have less than a day to tell their version of the truth. After that, the media and
other external stakeholders will tap into secondary and tertiary experts who will have their own views
on what has happened. United Airlines had their time of revealing the truth and apologizing with
appropriate compensation plan but they were unable to estimate the power of media when it is given

Criminal Statistics
Introduction:
The accuracy and reliability of criminal statistics is something that has been of great discussion
through criminology for decades. Whilst some are of the belief that criminal statistics are a misuse of
time and resources, others believe that there is some use for them within the criminological
community. The inaccuracies of criminal statistics come highlighted in abundance within academic
articles and research, many of which highlight the main source as the dark figure of crime. Many also
suggest other inconsistencies within official statistics to be influenced by various other factors from
both the criminal justice system (i.e. police), society and communities. But whilst there is much
research to suggest that criminal statistics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

in some instances (eg, homicide or motor vehicle theft) give us a good guide both to the total volume
of crime and trends in its incidence. In relation to motor vehicle thefts, the almost 100 percent
reporting rate may have some relation to the fact that most people have car insurance and that in most
cases to be able to claim insurance for a car that has been stolen an official report must be made to the
police. Therefore, the vast majority of car thefts would be reported to the police.

Auto Body Repair Research Paper
Auto Body Repair
Through the years automobile construction has changed greatly and so have the ways in which cars
are repaired. Although auto body repair at one time was centered on hammering out dents in sheet
metal panels, it has now become largely a paint and replace industry as many of the components are
made of composites that are cheaper to swap then repair. The point of this paper is to inform the reader
about how to make the necessary repairs to your body work. Many of the tools used for mechanical
auto repairs are also used for body work. There are some special tools designed for body work. A body
hammer is one of the special tools. Body hammers are needed to align and shape sheet metal panels.

There are several kinds of paints you can use on a vehicle. The different kinds of paint are single
stage, basecoat/clear coat, and tri stage. Urethane enamel paint, also known as single stage paint
consists of a color pigment and hardener. I conducted an interview and the person I interviewed said
that single stage paint is the best to use. There is also a basecoat/clear coat system that can be used.
This system makes the job easier when you are doing a single color paint job. Tri stage paint originally
was reserved for custom paint jobs or high end vehicles. Tri stage paint systems are becoming
common on OEM paint finishes. Once the color of everything to paint is decided and the masking is
done it is time to start painting. If unexperienced one should practice on old body panels or parts
before jumping in on newly repaired surface. Before spraying the project, wipe it off with a tack cloth
as a final cleaning. The specially made cloths are designed to pick up and retain very small specs of

Rock And Roll Influence On Society
There is a common misperception in society today that the roots of rock and roll began in the 1950s
with Elvis Presley shaking his hips. Few know that the roots of rock and roll actually go all the way
back to slavery. Rock and roll first got its start with the blues and has since evolved over time into the
rock and roll we now know of today. As each new band and artist would come along, they would go
on to add their own sound to the mix, and once it was introduced it would never be taken away. The
influence of blues artists, such as Mamie Smith, and hillbilly (country and folk) artists such as Hank
Williams, could be heard in the music of 1950s rockers Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley, and their
influence could be heard in one of the most famous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By the end of World War II, the British Invasion had begun and bands such as The Rolling Stones
were becoming what is often seen as the epitome of rock and roll. Often thought of as the bad boys of
the British Invasion, their songs contained more messages about sex, drugs and rock and roll instead
of inequality, oppression and the troubles and issues people face. However, they carried on the legacy
of the blues nonetheless. Their performances had the influence of the likes of Chuck Berry s
unabashed performances, with Mick Jagger s attitude and posing. Although it is not like them to do
political lyrics, a song that propels them to stardom is the song Gimme Shelter which is often
interpreted to be a song about war. The repetition that is often found in blues is apparent in Gimme

Media Portrayal Of Women s Sports
The media portrayal of sports has changed immensely over the years. Before, women s sports were
nonexistent and the only reports revolved solely on male athletes and their sports. Then women started
to develop their own place in the sports industry. Yet still, with the emergence of professional female
athletes in the media, coverage was still slim to none. Since the media are seen as reflecting what is
important and has prestige, especially in western society, this severe underrepresentation is seen as
creating the impression that women athletes are non existent in the sporting world or of little value
when they do exist (Bernstein, 2002, p. 417). The only reason people forget about women s sports is
because of the lack of media attention to them. When the media portrays something in a certain way or
gives it little exposure it becomes unimportant to the public. People are interested in what is
considered important and that is talked about publicly and the media controls what messages are
important enough to be shared. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By emphasizing certain facets of female participation in sports, while ignoring others, sports media
effectively shape public agenda and influence the public s judgment about the world of sport (Weiller,
Higgs, Greenleaf, 2004, p. 15). This is evident when you look at the amount of viewership women s
sports has compared to men s. Also, when you look at the ideologies people have on female athletes
compared to males. By highlighting certain things in women s sports, it makes it look like the media is
portraying women s sports positively, but that s not technically the case. Instead, they are just
choosing what they want to show in order to receive high ratings. In doing this, they are affecting how
female athletes are seen to the public. This is reinforcing gender ideologies and characteristics in

Stamp Out Smoking Ad Campaign Analysis
Like many states, the Arkansas Department of Health is thoroughly engaged in attempting to improve
the wellbeing of its citizens. In Arkansas, there are free tobacco quitline referral programs. Once a
referral is submitted, the tobacco or nicotine user will receive a call from a Quit Counselor within 24
hours. Anyone who is referred should be planning a quit date within the next 30 days. Quit Counselors
work with tobacco and nicotine users to create a customized, individual quit plan, which includes free
counseling services by phone, online, or both. Although the ADH focuses on all aspects of smokers,
the Arkansas Department of health has a strong passion to help those who suffer from second hand
smoke. Plastered throughout Arkansas cities and on nearly every television, the ADH runs ads of
children both young and old that suffer from second hand smoke. Perhaps one of the strongest ads is
the one that has a picture of a hand grenade and a cigarette and says they are both capable of killing

The Salt Satyagrah Strengths And Weaknesses
The Salt Satyagraha: Strengths and Weaknesses
On 12 March 1930, Gandhi started a historic march to Dandi known as the Salt Satyagraha. It was an
act of Civil Disobedience Movement against the British tax law in India. Gandhi and 78 satyagrahis
(volunteers) walked for 24 days. On the way to Dandi, they were able to reach 40 villages and towns
where about 50,000 people heard their messages. Gandhi broke the salt law on 6 April 1930, and
millions of people throughout India followed the act. The entire country became conscious of the
struggle for Purna Swaraj (independence). The repertoire of the Salt Satyagraha then was massively

1. Strong Leading Figure
A leader plays an important role in a campaign. There are at least four important roles that a leader
must play. These roles are a thinker, communicator, decision maker and team builder. A leader must
have a vision. He sets a clear goal for the campaign. He provides direction, instruction and guidance in
achieving that goal. A leader also has to be a good communicator. He should understand the nature of
the campaign and all of the related stakeholders. He tailors the message accordingly in order to
influence his audience.
The success of a campaign mostly relies on its leader s knowledge and experience. A leader analyses
information and resources available. He makes important decisions, such as choosing the best tactics
to implement the campaign. Moreover, a leader should be a successful team builder. He builds a solid
internal team first, then reach further support from a larger crowds. In addition, a good leader should
involve directly in the campaign, working together with his team and supporters.
The Salt Satyagraha relied much on Gandhi s strong leadership. Gandhi set a goal for the campaign: to
build the sense of independence (Swaraj) in the heart of every Indians. In order to reach that goal,
Gandhi chose salt as a symbol. Gandhi argued that there was an indispensable need for salt besides air
and water. Salt was everyone s concern; thus, it would catch the attention of

How Did The Franco Regime Support The Spanish Government
The Spanish government and establishment were possibly the Franco regimes strongest tools in
asserting the regime s authority over the Spanish people. A new government was established after the
Spanish Civil War with a new main state party, new laws, and a new political system. Franco was so
well established at the end of the Spanish Civil War that no political opposition stood a chance,

Christian Teachings On The Righteousness Of God
There is a lot that could be said about the righteousness of God. Simply put, righteousness is the life of
God. It is a pure or undefiled state of existence. Everything about God is righteousness, and everyone
who has been born of God through the cross of Calvary has been given this nature of God. This is the
nature of life and purity. God is a spirit and when He birthed us, He recreated us in spirit so that we
may once again be like Him. When we were born again in the spirit, the Lord gave us His pure nature
that is against anything that is filthy. Sin is the dirtiest thing in the sight of God. Anyone who is born
again has been born again in the righteousness of God. Those who believe in Jesus are born into a new
spiritual kingdom of righteousness. God is righteous and his kingdom is the kingdom of righteousness.
The number one enemy of the kingdom of righteousness is sin. Those who are born again are born
against sin. Everything about our new kingdom is against sinfulness, and we ought to walk in the
testimony of our salvation. We were born again because the power of sin ... Show more content on

Examples Of Allusion In Eliot s Poetry
T. S. Eliot s poetry is known for its allusive nature. His poems are so full of allusions and references
that he is often considered as a difficult poet. Allusions in Eliot s poetry have always been intentional.
But the fact that the allusions, references and notes in his poems have made his poems difficult to
comprehend for his readers, has always disheartened him. One may argue that neither the knowledge
of Eliot s allusions and references make the reading of his poetry more enriched nor does their
ignorance make it altogether impossible for readers to interpret his poetry. Before entering into this
debate, it becomes necessary to understand the reason behind the large amount of allusiveness in Eliot
s poetry. According to James Longenbach,
It is ultimately important to understand the nature of Eliot s allusive practice to ask not only what is
the source? But why does Eliot allude? And how do we experience the allusion? (Longenbach, 1998;
177)
While analysing the question of allusiveness in Eliot s poetry in detail, it would be fruitful to give a
brief explanation of allusion as a literary concept. The Penguin Dictionary of Literary Terms Literary
Theory describes the term ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, he is not the first writer to make a generous use of allusions in his poetry. The poetry of the
earlier poets like John Milton, Edmund Spenser, and John Donne are also full of allusions. What is
striking about allusions in Eliot s poetry is the fact that they make their presence strongly felt in his
poetry. For Eliot, the use of allusions and references was a way to connect with the already existing
apparatus of knowledge. According to him, the already existing apparatus of knowledge always makes
its presence felt in any poet s work and that one single artist s work also alters the whole existing order
(Eliot, 2012; 295) before its appearance. Elaborating this point further, he says in his essay Tradition

Essay Malaria
Malaria (also called biduoterian fever, blackwater fever, falciparum malaria, plasmodium, Quartan
malaria, and tertian malaria) is one of the most infectious and most common diseases in the world.
This serious, sometimes fatal disease is caused by a parasite that is carried by a certain species of
mosquito called the Anopheles. It claims more lives every year than any other transmissible disease
except tuberculosis. Every year, five hundred million adults and children (around nine percent of the
world s population) contract the disease and of these, one hundred million people die. Children are

To contract malaria, a mosquito, but not just any mosquito must bite a human. The only type of
mosquito that can infect humans with the malaria virus is the Anopheles mosquito. While there are
around three hundred eighty species of the Anopheline mosquito, only about sixty are actually able to
spread the disease to humans. Also, only female mosquitoes can distribute the disease, as male
mosquitoes do not feed on humans.
Mosquitoes pass malaria to humans through their salivary glands. Once the parasites have entered the
blood stream, they go to the liver. In the liver they mature and undergo reproduction, forming
merozoites. These merozoites enter the blood stream and inject themselves into red blood cells. Once
inside the blood cells, they reproduce rapidly and within forty eight to seventy two hours, the blood
cell bursts, releasing hemoglobin into the blood stream. It is the destruction of these blood cells and
the hemoglobin released into the blood stream that actually causes most of the symptoms.
While the most common way malaria is transmitted is from mosquitoes to humans, there are other
ways of catching the disease. One way is from mother to her unborn child. When a disease is
contracted this way it is said to have been transmitted congenitally. Another way is during blood
transfusions. This is why it is important to be tested for

The internet is our modern source for news media; the importance of the newspaper has not only

Even though the way in which we consume information (PBS) has changed, the importance of an

The Framers of our constitution were well aware of the importance of the press as a judge to discuss

This shows Gordon Miller becoming heroic as he is standing up to the vandals who have been
tormenting him. This gives us the understanding that certain people can only take so much stress and
disruption in their lives before they come to the end of their tether and retaliate. The last sentence in
the story is an image of Miller sitting playing with a set of Roman Soldiers . This shows that Gordon
Miller is a lot more complex than Bold let us believe. He likes order and stability in his life, he does
not like change and disruptions. As he is playing with the Roman Soldier set this represents the order
that he likes in his life.
In conclusion revealing Gordon Millers personality slowly throughout the short story Bold uses a

empathy towards Gordon Miller and understand why he proceeded taking the heroic actions that he
did. This helps the reader not to dislike Miller for his actions but feel happy for him that he finally got

Zabel is a respectable businessman who loves religious music and the finer. However, there is a
shameful and jealous heart hides in his body that he lusts for his goddaughter Nelly. This is a rather
immoral theme shown in Quai des brumes. Moreover, Poetic Realism films focus on working class
characters and the theme of doomed love, which is the blending of comedy and tragedy. Compared to
Naturalism, poetic realism had a more romantic, idealistic, mysterious character.(Linda Nochlin,
Realism) It shows that the characters in Poetic Realism are usually marginal characters in the society.
Jean undoubtedly represents the marginal characters in the society. He carries a national identity,

U.s. Citizens During The Civil War
In order to look into the lives of the U.S. citizens during the Civil War I decided to look into the first
week from April 12, 1861 to April 18, 1861 of the New York Times. I looked into this week of articles
to see how the New York Times covered the outbreak of the war and the people s response to it. Some
of the main war events covered were: call for Union to relinquish command of Fort Sumter and first
shots of the war, reaction to the surrender of Fort Sumter, Lincoln s Proclamation to add seventy five
thousand volunteers to the war efforts, possible attacks on Fort Pickens, and the Confederate reaction
to Lincoln s Proclamation. During this week, the north was obviously nervous and scared yet felt they
would win as well as confused as to why the war was happening at all. The April 12 paper included
information on the confederates asking Major Anderson to surrender Fort Sumter and strategies for the
defense of the fort. In the Times article The Forts in Charleston Harbor there is a sense that the union
forces have positioned themselves well and the confederates have waited too long allowing the
opportunity for reinforcements to arrive if needed at Fort Sumter. This feeling can be seen in the final
sentence where it reads: But be the motive what it may, there is little doubt that they have lost the
golden opportunity, and that the Stars and Stripes will continue to wave over the old fort, unless
puerile negotiations should allow the Confederate force to prepare

Democracy In American Democracy
American Democracy
Democracies have been around for hundreds of years, dating back before the word democracy was
created by the ancient Greeks. Democracies give the citizens of the nation power and let them have a
say in politics. Also, the people have many freedoms guaranteed to them, unlike other types of
government. The people elect local, state, and national government officials. The local government
deals with many different issues. State government shares most of its power with the national
government. Lastly, the national government oversees all the smaller forms of government in the land.
[Thesis] American Democracy fits the definition of democracy because the people are represented
fairly through local, state, and national government. To begin, local government acts on behalf on
specific areas known as counties, towns, or districts (local government). The people vote on
councilmen to represent our county, town, or city. For example, the councilmen vote on and determine
how much money our school can spend. They can also enact on our county taxes. Local government
cannot pass or enforce laws that might put judgment on a much bigger area other than its own(local
government). For example, if the city tax for Opp is nine cents, they cannot impose that same tax on a
nearby city like Kinston. The citizens have a choice in who they vote for to make sure we are
represented fairly. As a person who makes up a part of the county, district, or town, the people all

Amid the war Texas City turned into a major modern focus. It had seven petrochemical refineries, two
oil pipeline organizations and the main tin smelter in the US. The city was developing and growing.
Schools worked in two shifts, much the same as the synthetic plants. The interest for industry was
high, yet wellbeing measures were still low and unpracticed. The year of 1947 turned into a urgent
occasion in the recollections of the city. On April 16 and 17 a noteworthy calamity happened to
overall populace that for a long time after couldn t be overlooked.
It began on a brilliant and clear morning when the ship in the Texas City Harbor, The Grand Camp,
loaded with ammonium nitrate compost, bound for war torn Europe, was ablaze. Ammonium nitrate is
an exceptionally perilous and unstable material in the event that it is dangerously utilized, a similar
material was utilized as a part of the Oklahoma bombarding. Since the flames in the port weren t
uncommon, tragically individuals weren t as frightened as they ought to have been. Unexpectedly, the
individuals who have seen the rosy orange and chestnut smoke were especially pulled in by the bright
vapor. Kids after school and neighboring people on foot, hurried to the harbor to watch the fire fighter
utilize their strategies to put out the fire. Despite the fact that that policeman obstructed the street with
two autos it didn t stop a horde of progressively that 400 individuals collecting. What s more two

A home mortgage refinance can be a sound financial decision in many circumstances. This is
especially the case when interest rates are attractive. There are several factors that should be
considered when making the decision to refinance; however.
When you first purchased your home and took out your mortgage, you probably looked at interest
rates, terms and fees. When you decide to take advantage of a home mortgage refinance, you need to
consider these factors as well as a few others. For example, you should take into consideration the
amount of money that is left remaining on the balance of your mortgage. This is important because

that you have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you only have five years left on your mortgage, it may not make good financial sense to refinance
because you would be extending the payment on your mortgage beyond that time frame in most cases.
Unless you are facing dire circumstances, it would usually be best to remain in the first mortgage. If;
however, you have more than five years left on your mortgage there are numerous advantages to a
home mortgage refinance including the ability to tap into your equity and lower monthly mortgage
payments.
You should also make sure you check your credit rating before you pursue refinancing your home. As
you are probably aware, your credit rating had a tremendous impact on your ability to qualify for your
first mortgage. The same can be said of a home mortgage refinance. To get the best rates possible, you
wan to make sure that your credit report is accurate.
Many people make the decision to refinance their mortgages because they are either having a difficult
financial time or they want to pay off higher interest bills with a lower interest home equity loan. A
home mortgage refinance can be a good solution which will allow you to consolidate all of those bills
into a single loan with a lower interest rate. You will be able to save money each month and then start
with a fresh clean financial

Separate Spheres
There was no equality between man and woman in the Victorian era. The patriarchic system was the
norm and women usually led a more secluded, private life. Men, on the other hand, possessed all kinds
of freedom ( Gender Roles ). Moreover, the man was naturally the head of the family and the guardian
of family members. He was the protector and the lord. He was strong, brave and hard working (
Gender Roles ). The Victorian era was the time in which the roles of men and women were defined
more strictly than at any other time in history. The Victorians considered males and females as
Separate Spheres that met only during meals. According to Hughes, the ideology of Separate Spheres
rested on a definition of the natural characteristics of women and men. Women were considered
physically weaker yet morally superior to men, what meant that they were best suited to the domestic
sphere ( Gender roles in the 19th century ). The fact that woman was morally superior to man led to
the belief that her goal was to bear many children and maintain a home that her husband did not have
to worry about (berryofthesea). What is surprising is the fact that even though women were perceived
as morally superior, they could neither vote nor sue. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Hughes, women were assumed to desire marriage because it allowed them to become
mothers rather than to pursue sexual or emotional satisfaction ( Gender roles in the 19th century ). It
was a common practice in the Victorian era that young men used the services of prostitutes, while
women had to be pure and clean until marriage. Moreover, women were not even allowed to speak to
men unless there was a married woman present as a chaperone (Hughes). The inequality is also
evident in the fact that women were expected to have sex with only one man, their husband. However,
it was acceptable for men to have multiple partners in their life (Cody

Virginia Woolf Research Paper
Virginia Woolf, born January 25th 1882, was an unorthodox British author and feminist who had an
immeasurable impact on women, those with mental illnesses, and the LGBT community. She was self
educated and even though her father a literary critic didn t condone women going to college he still
helped educate and influence Virginia. Woolf is believed to have revolutionized the english essay,
because she never learned how to write a set essay in school she came up with her own way. Virginia
Woolfs childhood was cloaked with chaos and darkness. Her father was very temperamental and
brooding. This only worsened after her mothers death in 1895 causing her father to withdraw into his
studies. Woolf had also been being sexually abused by her half brothers from her mothers previous
marriage. This abuse continued even after her mothers death into her young adulthood. Her mothers
death along with her sexual abuse was to highly conductive to Virginia; causing her to have her first of
many breakdowns at only 13. Virginia s father died ten years after her mother, shortly after Virginia
had another breakdown and made her first suicide attempt. There has been much controversy about the
causes of her chronic breakdowns. Some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She released her first essay and began teaching literature at Morley college. Virginia claims that if her
father lived she would have never became a writer. Woolf was very noncommittal towards marriage
and turned down various suitors. Beginning in 1910 Woolf became an advocate for Women rights.
Virginia liked to think of herself as very independent and in 1911 she rented a house which was a big
deal for the time period. The idea of women having their own space to create was exceedingly
important to her and so she wrote A Room Of Ones Own which is now considered a masterpiece of
political propaganda and the bible of what is called the second wave of the women s movement

The Best American Essays Of The Century By Robert Atwan
Throughout the 1900 s, America has grown exponentially in its values, struggles, and art. The Best
American Essays of the Century, written by Robert Atwan, showcases the progress this country has
made through a series of essays ordered chronologically. Although many underlying topics existed in
these pieces, three common themes particularly stood out. In How It Feels to Be Colored Me by Zora
Neale Hurston, The Old Stone House by Edmund Wilson, and The Handicapped by Randolph Bourne,
identity is an important subject. Injustice is a clearly shared theme in Coatesville by John Jay
Chapman, The Devil Baby at Hull House by Jane Addams, and Of the Coming of John by W.E.B. Du
Bois. Finally, in Corn pone Opinions by Mark Twain, Tradition and the Individual Talent by T.S. Eliot,
and What Are Masterpieces and Why Are There So Few of Them by Gertrude Stein, the aspect of non
personality and the removal of one s self seems to be commonly spoken of in terms of creation.
The first motif, identity, appears initially in How It Feels to Be Colored Me where it says, But I am not
tragically colored. There is no great sorrow damned up in my soul, nor lurking behind my eyes. I do
not mind at all. (p. 115) Here, it is obvious that the author holds no shame in her skin nor self. She is
proud of who she is despite the prejudice some hold against her. Hurston identifies as colored and
does not care what others think. Her identity is unwavering. Also applicable to this idea is

patient sees a dog that was a humongous point for this one man and everyone who witnessed the
account (Addcock) This one account shows how while many react the same way with the smile and
laughs that people of all ages receive from a dog, others cannot have the same reaction and other small
interactions can mean a milestone or a point of turn around for people needing that stimuli. This is
only one of many accounts of accomplishments that take place with the aid of pets. Another case was

Some people have been known to have a fake service dog or therapy dog due to the idea that some
people believe oh my dog would be a perfect therapy dog he loves people but they never do the
training or the testing required to do this work. Many times the people want to do the work and not the
dogs. This idea of oh my dog would be perfect can lead to a lot of problem from severity of bites to
the lowness of stress and anxiety. A true therapy dog has to be a special balance of stability, lovability,
tolerance, able to handle stress, and prepared to cope with the feeling that dogs and people can feel in
these facilities ( Ethical Considerations in Animal ). While this problem is not an uncommon one it
can be a very serious one, and can be remediated by proper education of the facilities and have

  • 2. The No Child Left Behing Act Introduction The Bush administration, as well as others, hoped to close achievement gaps and bring all children up to a higher standard. In order to do this, No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was enacted with the hope of an extreme education reform. It requires strict accountability and assessments for schools. This was done without proper funding and expectations that are difficult for schools and students to reach. This act caused many problems in schools rather than fixing the problems that already existed. Policy Formulation The Social Problem Many United States children are failing in the public schooling system. Students are dropping out at alarming rates and those who stay are not properly prepared for college and careers. There are vast achievement gaps leaving children behind that are minorities, come from low income families, are disabled, and are English learning (U.S. Department of Education). These problems are apparent to teachers, parents, students, employers, and society as a whole. This will leave the United States with a workforce that is not properly educated or trained for the jobs available. This ideology that all children regardless of income, minority, or disability should be able to receive a quality education to prepare them for college and careers. One of the biggest causes of this achievement gap is unequal funding. Poor, minority children are typically educated in urban schools that receive less funding than schools in suburban areas that educate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Comparing Emile Durkheim s The Division Of Labor In comparing Emile Durkheim s The Division of Labor in Society and readings from the The Rules of Sociological Method to Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann s The Social Construction of Reality in addition to Harriet Martineaus Morals and Manners, Morals of Slavery, and The Political Nonexistence of Women, all of these authors investigate people as beings that are fundamentally social that create the basis for society. Even though their perspectives have similar components when it comes to fundamentally key ideas, they still tend to take different stances on viewing the individuals involved in the process from micro and macro perspectives in order to understand the correlation between the individual interacting with society s institutions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This author has had a particular focus on women in politics and how slaves were included in this social structure during this time period making an effort to convey that all men are born equal and free as her views were very radical during this time. In comparison to Martineau, Emile Durkheim emphasizes that the division of labor is a key attribute to the social structure of society as the general population continues to grow, people will naturally become more disciplined in specialized professions that will ultimately create institutions as all of these specializations will work together to benefit society. However, Durkheim does agree with Martineau to the extent that power is diffused throughout society and ultimately belongs to the government. As government holds the ultimate authority, punishment will be defined as a reaction as to what has violated laws that have been instituted in order to maintain standards of moral order. Additionally, Berger and Luckmann make it clear that it is because people are social beings, people create a society the more we interact with one another as [man s] relationship to the surrounding environment is everywhere...structured by his own biological constitution that people attach what they know to be the physical world and build structural concepts that constitute our society. • 5. London Dockland Case Study For places both rural and urban to maintain development and a strong economy they must rebrand. To keep with the times so to speak place must continue to redevelop in a number of ways. Both areas are at risk of becoming derelict and poverty struck if they don t regenerate. One of the main causes of decline is a lack of employment. In many areas with one ruling industry when the industry collapses the town is left with high levels of unemployment. As countries continue to develop their primary and secondary sectors shrink as it becomes cheaper for TNC s to outsource work to other cheaper countries. This among other reasons can leave towns and cities in decline as there are no longer jobs available and people have to move away for work or stay unemployed which has bad economic effects. An example of this happening in an urban area is the London Docklands. In the 19th century it was the busiest port in the world however by the 1960 s bigger boats were being used and the docks weren t deep enough for this. The docks were closed leaving lots of derelict land, few jobs and lots of social problems. However the docklands were successfully rebranded with the introduction of the LDDC. Miriam Ferguson Research Paper Miriam Amanda Wallace Ma Ferguson (1875 1961), first woman governor of Texas, daughter of Joseph L. and Eliza (Garrison) Wallace, was born in Bell County, Texas, on June 13, 1875. She went to Salado College and Baylor Female College at Belton. In 1899, at the age of 24, she married James Edward Ferguson, as well of Bell County. Mrs. Ferguson served as the first lady of Texas during the gubernatorial terms of her husband (1915 17), who was challenged during his 2nd administration. However, after the Texas Supreme Court again rejected her husband s petition to place his name on the ballot in 1930, she entered the gubernatorial race. In the May primary she led Ross Sterling, who then defeated her in the August runoff. Her defeat proved fortuitous politically because Sterling, rather than she, was blamed by the voters when Texas began to feel the full impact of the Great Depression. In February 1932 she again declared for the governorship; she promised to lower taxes and cut state expenditures, and condemned alleged waste, graft, and political favoritism by the Sterling controlled highway commission. After leading Sterling in the May primary by over one hundred thousand votes, Ma Ferguson barely won the Democratic nomination in the August primary. She then defeated the Republican nominee, Orville Bullington, in November to secure her 2nd term as governor. Her second administration did not engender as much controversy as the first, despite dire predictions to the contrary by her political opponents. The fiscally conservative governor held the line on state expenditures and even advocated a state sales tax and corporate income tax, although the state legislature did not act on these proposals. Mrs. Ferguson continued her liberal pardoning and parole policies, but even that action did not stir as much controversy as in her first administration since every convict paroled or pardoned represented that much less ... • 7. The Theme Of Fear In The Garden Of Beast Fear is so deeply embedded in the human genome, as a defense mechanism. It is so old it is coded into the oldest part of the human nervous system. Throughout history, fear has been used to manipulate whole populations into starting wars, revolts, genocides, and discrimination. Never has that been more true than in Adolf Hitler s Germany, his rise led to the deadliest conflict in human history, World War II. His consolidation of power and control over the people of Germany, can be attributed to using fear as a weapon of manipulation. This vote rigging is Larson taking time to develop the setting of Germany, by showing the vice like grip that Hitler is developing on the German people only about ten months after his ascension to chancellor. As Germany spirals into a secret police state, people begin to worry about the omnipotent and all hearing ear of the Gestapo. Larson shifts focus off of the Dodd s to give the reader insight into the atmosphere of Germany: Germans grew reluctant to stay in communal ski lodges, fearing they might talk in their sleep (Larson 223). Larson makes this very plain, GErmans fear that whatever they say is being watched and scrutinized by the government. This fear is so consuming, that Germans put off not only vacation to ski lodges, but medical operations, as they fear they might speak negatively of Hitler while under anesthesia. This paranoia of being caught for speaking and subsequently shot, is Larson deliberately involving the reader in the affairs of Germany on the whole, and making the reader feel as if they too are stuck in this dystopia. Later on Larson further develops the atmosphere of Berlin to further his theme of fear. After a putsch of all of Germany of Nazi enemies, Dodd remarks on the tense atmosphere in Germany, At a time when hundreds of men ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Unfortunately its the cause of all the social norms. Our nation has been brainwashed by so many factors. Such as tv, radio, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. This topic reminds me a lot of a section in my psycology class Behavior in Social and Cultural Context . It talks about attributions within social influences, behavior, ethnic identity, and stereotypes. Which could not fit anymore perfectly with what is going on in the world today, and this topic. Imagine walking into a school getting ready to teach a siminar about discrimination. You see that the teachers have already grouped themselves by ethnicity. How would approach this? What would you do to get your point across to the audience? this example from the book really hit me. The video started off with two babies, one black one white. They were happy and playing. They didn t see the other as white or black, they just saw a little human like them. The video went on and talked about how babies are innocent, and hoe we all started off innocent. • 12. Homo Sapien Human Evolution Charles Darwin stated that the evolution of man would take not thousands of years but millions of years. In the case of the human species (Homo sapien) evolutionary theory posits that this has been the case. Human evolution begins with the primate lineage which also includes new and old world monkeys, and apes (Phelan, 2015). It is important to note that researchers have determined that the chimpanzee is the humans closest living relative. While, humans and chimpanzees have similar genetic and anatomical structure which signifies a close evolution relationship, it is also important to note the anatomical differences that distinguish Homo sapiens. Unlike chimpanzees, humans evolved toward bipedalism, grew larger brains and eventually became bigger in size (Phelan, 2015). • 15. Comparing Poems My Last Duchess And Porphyria s Lover TITLE Robert Browning s poems, My Last Duchess ( MLD ) and Porphyria s Lover ( PL ) take the form of dramatic monologues and are striking examples of literature written in the Victorian era. Due to their form, a great interaction is developed between the reader and narrator, with an additional oratory effect; this allows the audience to understand a situation less ambiguously through features such as tone. Therefore, Browning is able to present male and female characters more completely. Furthermore, the poems accurately convey gender inequality present in Victorian society, hinting at the lack of liberties given to women. In MLD, Browning employs the Duke as narrator, developing the reader s perception of his personality through use of language and literary devices. As a result, the Duke inadvertently portrays himself as egocentric, proprietorial and at times arrogant, psychotic and paranoid. He refers to the painting of his late wife as my last Duchess , with the possessive pronoun my indicating the Duchess is just another of his possessions. This element of the Duke s ... As a result, uncertainty is created throughout PL, as such a narrator may be deceptive. • 18. Antigone and Hobson s Choice Although Creon and Henry Hobson may have attained their good lives by only adhering to themselves, both demonstrate the destructive consequences of when one puts selfish intentions above all else. Creon s downfall is contributed by his pride and unwillingness to listen to others. He realized his fault too late and ended up losing the ones closest to him. Henry Hobson was enveloped in his business and accumulating wealth, without acknowledging the hard work of his daughters or Willie Mossop. The result was having lost control of his life to Maggie. The reason for Creon s behavior is that he inherited a city that experienced destruction among the people and he felt it was his responsibility to restore it. He attempted to maintain stability while keeping a higher status. He first came into conflict when Antigone believed that no human law could supersede the divine law created by the Gods. Creon decreed that Polyneices was to remain unburied in order to punish the enemy of city and give a sense of justice to the mayhem caused by the civil war. She decided to disobey his edict and to defend her actions in front of the chorus and the city of Thebes. Creon did not accept the validity of her decision and was offended by her disrespect. (Paglia) According to the author of this article, who also is a humanities professor and a cultural critic, a woman should pay more attention to their safety while they pursuit the freedom as man does. Because a woman is likely become a victim in a rape case. In this article, the author also implies that even the law should protect women from the rape, but women themselves still should build up a self protection awareness to keep them away from the rape crime. In additional, the focus of my article is about to analysis the article of Camille Paglia, On Date Rape. Also, I ll point out some misconceptions about her work. The first point I recognized in Paglia s article is the third paragraph of the article, which explains that because of the young feminists come from a white, middle class world, so that they expect everything should be safe as they think. Before, women s sports were nonexistent and the only reports revolved solely on male athletes and their sports. Then women started to develop their own place in the sports industry. Yet still, with the emergence of professional female athletes in the media, coverage was still slim to none. Since the media are seen as reflecting what is important and has prestige, especially in western society, this severe underrepresentation is seen as creating the impression that women athletes are non existent in the sporting world or of little value when they do exist (Bernstein, 2002, p. 417). The only reason people forget about women s sports is because of the lack of media attention to them. His poems are so full of allusions and references that he is often considered as a difficult poet. Allusions in Eliot s poetry have always been intentional. But the fact that the allusions, references and notes in his poems have made his poems difficult to comprehend for his readers, has always disheartened him. One may argue that neither the knowledge of Eliot s allusions and references make the reading of his poetry more enriched nor does their ignorance make it altogether impossible for readers to interpret his poetry. Before entering into this debate, it becomes necessary to understand the reason behind the large amount of allusiveness in Eliot s poetry. According to James Longenbach, It is ultimately important to understand the nature of Eliot s allusive practice to ask not only what is the source? But why does Eliot allude? And how do we experience the allusion? Some of the main war events covered were: call for Union to relinquish command of Fort Sumter and first shots of the war, reaction to the surrender of Fort Sumter, Lincoln s Proclamation to add seventy five thousand volunteers to the war efforts, possible attacks on Fort Pickens, and the Confederate reaction to Lincoln s Proclamation. During this week, the north was obviously nervous and scared yet felt they would win as well as confused as to why the war was happening at all. The April 12 paper included information on the confederates asking Major Anderson to surrender Fort Sumter and strategies for the defense of the fort. In the Times article The Forts in Charleston Harbor there is a sense that the union forces have positioned themselves well and the confederates have waited too long allowing the opportunity for reinforcements to arrive if needed at Fort Sumter. This feeling can be seen in the final sentence where it reads: But be the motive what it may, there is little doubt that they have lost the golden opportunity, and that the Stars and Stripes will continue to wave over the old fort, unless puerile negotiations should allow the Confederate force to prepare ... • 36. Democracy In American Democracy American Democracy Democracies have been around for hundreds of years, dating back before the word democracy was created by the ancient Greeks. Democracies give the citizens of the nation power and let them have a say in politics. Also, the people have many freedoms guaranteed to them, unlike other types of government. The people elect local, state, and national government officials. The local government deals with many different issues. State government shares most of its power with the national government. Lastly, the national government oversees all the smaller forms of government in the land. [Thesis] American Democracy fits the definition of democracy because the people are represented fairly through local, state, and national government. To begin, local government acts on behalf on specific areas known as counties, towns, or districts (local government). The people vote on councilmen to represent our county, town, or city. For example, the councilmen vote on and determine how much money our school can spend. They can also enact on our county taxes. Local government cannot pass or enforce laws that might put judgment on a much bigger area other than its own(local government). For example, if the city tax for Opp is nine cents, they cannot impose that same tax on a nearby city like Kinston. The citizens have a choice in who they vote for to make sure we are represented fairly. As a person who makes up a part of the county, district, or town, the people all ... • 41. Separate Spheres There was no equality between man and woman in the Victorian era. The patriarchic system was the norm and women usually led a more secluded, private life. Men, on the other hand, possessed all kinds of freedom ( Gender Roles ). Moreover, the man was naturally the head of the family and the guardian of family members. He was the protector and the lord. He was strong, brave and hard working ( Gender Roles ). The Victorian era was the time in which the roles of men and women were defined more strictly than at any other time in history. The Victorians considered males and females as Separate Spheres that met only during meals. According to Hughes, the ideology of Separate Spheres rested on a definition of the natural characteristics of women and men. Women were considered physically weaker yet morally superior to men, what meant that they were best suited to the domestic sphere ( Gender roles in the 19th century ). The fact that woman was morally superior to man led to the belief that her goal was to bear many children and maintain a home that her husband did not have to worry about (berryofthesea). Although many underlying topics existed in these pieces, three common themes particularly stood out. In How It Feels to Be Colored Me by Zora Neale Hurston, The Old Stone House by Edmund Wilson, and The Handicapped by Randolph Bourne, identity is an important subject. Injustice is a clearly shared theme in Coatesville by John Jay Chapman, The Devil Baby at Hull House by Jane Addams, and Of the Coming of John by W.E.B. Du Bois. Finally, in Corn pone Opinions by Mark Twain, Tradition and the Individual Talent by T.S. Eliot, and What Are Masterpieces and Why Are There So Few of Them by Gertrude Stein, the aspect of non personality and the removal of one s self seems to be commonly spoken of in terms of creation. The first motif, identity, appears initially in How It Feels to Be Colored Me where it says, But I am not tragically colored. There is no great sorrow damned up in my soul, nor lurking behind my eyes. I do not mind at all. (p. 115) Here, it is obvious that the author holds no shame in her skin nor self.
