Gatsby Social Hierarchy
In any great novel, an understanding of the era in which the story is set can lead to a deeper
appreciation of the author s themes and characters. For example, the themes that preoccupied F. Scott
Fitzgerald, issues of social class, the dynamics of prohibition, and the culture of excessive
consumption, would be difficult to convey on their own. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the
social, political, and moral environment of America in the 1920s sheds greater light on the otherwise
complex forces that drive the characters in The Great Gatsby.
The complex social hierarchy of America in the Twenties is a major factor in the lives of the
characters in The Great Gatsby, especially Gatsby himself. From the time he falls in love with Daisy,
Gatsby strives to ascend into her social class so that he will be worthy of her. The narrator tells us, He
let her believe that he was a person from much the same stratum as herself that he was fully able to
take care of her (Fitzgerald 149). From then on, everything he does is driven by this desire to break ...

The culture of consumption that Veblen wrote about in 1899 was on spectacular display during the
1920s. In many ways, Gatsby personifies the notion of conspicuous expenditure designed to
effectively mend the consumer s good fame...In order to be reputable, it must be wasteful (11). His
extravagant lifestyle is best seen in the lavish parties he regularly throws. The narrator captures the
image of waste, saying, Every Friday five crates of oranges and lemons arrived from a fruitier in New
York every Monday these same oranges and lemons left his back door in a pyramid of pulp less halves
(Fitzgerald 39). All of Gatsby s efforts to display his wealth are designed to gain access to the society
he craves and to gain favor with the woman he

Vikings Season 4
Vikings coming for a fouth time by Melissa Wlostoski Vikings season 4 premised on the History
channel on 2/18/2016. In connection with what happened last season, We see the status of Ragner s
health coming into play again and it was not good. His wife ruled his land while he was away. She
doesn t really want to give up her rule of the place. We also see his brother in Paris where he s living
out the deal he was ofter by the king of the city. Which include being married to his daughter and
defending Paris, against the Vikings in exchange for land and a title. The opening scenes consists of
Ragner having some kind of near death vision of where he denied entrance to Valhalla the Viking
afterlife. The vision also shows him having glimpse of his future. ... Show more content on

The seer doesn t confirm or deny whether that is going to happen. Ragner does recovery somewhat
from his dire state of health. But he doesn t seem to happy about it. Perhaps because he doesn t want
to deal with things he has to deal with due to him being king. For example, people betraying him like
his brother did once. his brother is officially married to the princess of Paris. Unfortunately the woman
really doesn t want to marry him. There is also a little bit of time jump that occur as well. Which do
not hurt the episode in my opinion. Its not like done in a way that is awkard or doesn t work for the
flow of the plot that is gettng started. I really like the near death scene that feature Ragner and its
showing to him of what is to come. Its just seem to very cool to me. We also get a little hint of his
eldest son starting to fill a prophecy about him sailing around a sea with no name like the seer said he
would to his father. The hint is this young man looking at a map he got out the city of

Advantage And Disadvantage Of Tunneling Method
It is a type of underwater tunnel. It consists of segments which are constructed somewhere else and
are then floated at the tunnel site to be linked together. These tunnels are normally used together with
other tunnel construction methods like bored tunnel, etc. This method is commonly used for road and
rail crossings of river, sea channels/ harbors, etc. Refer Exhibit 7 for how it works
This method has many advantages:
1. Cost effective
2. Speedy construction
3. Resistant to earthquakes
4. Safety during construction
Some of the disadvantages are:
1. It would have direct contact with water hence it is important to have a careful waterproofing design.
2. Since the tunnel is constructed in segments, utmost care needs to be taken during the design of ...

Limits the disturbance to the surrounding wall leading to production of smooth tunnel wall making
then suitable for use in highly urban areas.
2. Cost of lining the tunnel is reduced.
Its disadvantages are:
1. Construction of TBMs is really expensive.
2. It is difficult to transport TBMs
New Austrian Tunneling Method
New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) or also called Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) has
revolutionized the tunneling industry. It is the most popular method of tunnel design and construction.
This method draws its advantage from the capability of using the geological strength of the
surrounding rock mass in stabilizing the tunnel. Refer Exhibit 9 for elements of NATM
The main principle of NATM is to monitor the performance of underground construction during
construction. It is also called as design as you go and design as you monitor approach since on the
basis of observed ground conditions, the desired action can be taken.
There are seven elements in NATM:
1. Exploitation of strength of native rock mass
2. Shotcrete protection
3. Measurement and monitoring
4. Flexible support
5. Closing of the invert
6. Contractual arrangements
7. Rock mass classification.

Window Advantages And Disadvantages
The color, texture and pattern of various items in a space can contribute either negatively or positively
to how a particular room looks or feels. Windows are no exception, and that is why it is of utmost
importance to carefully consider how best to dress them, so they can complement the rest of your
décor.
To help you make an informed choice, we have come up with a guide to help you get suitable window
treatments for each room in your home. What s more we tell you where you can find them at pocket
friendly prices so that you get value for your money.
First and foremost, it is important to note that these decorative elements do more than just add
aesthetics. They perform additional functions such as:
Controlling the entry of light
Blocking U.V rays
Providing privacy
Controlling temperatures in a room
Therefore, they are a necessary addition to any home. There are two major types to choose from, the
stiff and soft window treatments. Today, we will focus on the stiff treatments that are a worth having
in your home or office. Under this broad category are examples of blinds and shades that add not only
pattern and color to your interior, but also meet the functional needs they are intended for.
1. Wooden Blinds
Blinds are hung either vertically over large windows or horizontally over smaller ones and are made of
slats that are tilted closed or open by cords. The slats are made from different types of natural wood
giving it distinct finishes. This makes for an

The Negative Consequences Of Noise Pollution
Ahmed Sami Hassan
Dr. Clark
ENG 1101
06 June 2015 Noise Pollution What is the Noise Pollution? The term noise pollution used to define
unwanted sounds that come from many sources such as barking dogs, loud music; vehicles, aircraft
and rail transport; air conditioners, factories; amplified music and construction work released into the
environment. Noise pollution has adverse effects on both human health and environment.
One of the most obvious negative consequences of prolonged exposure to noise is hearing loss.
Studies show that people who have been regularly exposed to intense noise, due to the nature of their
work, have decreased hearing sensibility, compared to those who have worked in more quiet
conditions. The most disturbing source of noise pollution stems from traffic (Healthy Hearing).
Elevated sound levels cause changes in the structure of the inner ear which results in irreversible
hearing loss.
The Studies found any sound levels crosses the 70dB mark; it becomes noise for the ear. Noise levels
above 80 decibels produce damaging effects to the ear. When ear is exposed to extreme loud noise
(above 100 decibels) for a considerable period of time, it can cause irreparable damage and lead to
permanent hearing loss. Sleep Disturbances is one of the noise pollution effects that can deter your
overall well being. Noise can interrupt a good night s sleep, and when this occurs, the person feels
extremely annoyed and uncomfortable. People deprived of uninterrupted sleep show a sharp dip in
their energy levels which often results into extreme fatigue. This can considerably decrease a person s
ability to work efficiently. Noise pollution may also lead to mental health problems. Exposure to loud
sound can result in elevated stress levels as well as stimulate violent behavior. A constant noise in the
vicinity can also trigger headaches, make people tense and anxious, and disturb emotional balance.
Another effect of noise pollution is on cardiovascular issues. Studies have shown that high intensity
sound cause a dramatic rise in blood pressure as noise levels constrict the arteries, disrupting the blood
flow. The heart rate (the number of heartbeats per minute) also increases. These sudden abnormal
changes in

Race, Urban Poverty, and Public Policy
The problems of race and urban poverty remain pressing challenges which the United States has yet to
address. Changes in the global economy, technology, and race relations during the last 30 years have
necessitated new and innovative analyses and policy responses. A common thread which weaves
throughout many of the studies reviewed here is the dynamics of migration. In When Work
Disappears, immigrants provide comparative data with which to highlight the problems of ghetto
poverty affecting blacks. In No Shame in My Game, Puerto Rican and Dominican immigrants are part
of the changing demographics in Harlem. In Canarsie, the possible migration of blacks into a

educational system would be further buttressed by quality child care provisions which would also
included pre first grade/kindergarten nursery schools modeled after the French école maternelle.
Wilson s other policy recommendations include suburb city economic partnerships, many of which
coincide with Jargowsky s recommendations in Poverty and Place, as well as policies revolving
around the earned income tax credit (EITC) and public jobs of last resort, which are part of policy
recommendations shared by David Ellwood and Herbert Gans (see below).
In No Shame in My Game, anthropologist Katherine Newman attempts to draw greater attention to the
plight of the working poor rather than the jobless poor. She and her research team explore the lives of
Harlem s working poor, primarily focusing on the fast food industry or burger flippers as the subject
for her largely ethnographic study. One of the important insights articulated in her study is the
extended familial structures/networks that rely on wage and welfare income as a means of survival, in
addition to providing resources such as child care: networks she identifies in African American,
Dominican, and Puerto Rican working poor families in Harlem. Thus, welfare reform restructuring
will not only impact those families who rely solely on welfare for survival, but also on those working
poor families

A Room Of One s Own
In the passage A Room of One s Own the writer tells what it was like for women to live in England in
the 14 to 16th century. She uses examples like on how there were never any famous poets like
Shakespeare and tell her audience how they were mistreated in this era. Virginia Woolf s introduction
sentence was very vague to the reader. After that first sentence she starts persuading the audience by
capturing the reader s emotions. Mrs. Woolf gets her audience s emotions by describing how the
women were mistreated in this era. Over all she rambles on the same things and keeps making the
same point over and over. Miss Virginia voice is to persuade the audience into thinking that women
were abused in England in this time period. I agree with her

God Created Humanity For A Purpose
Assess the claim that god created humanity for a purpose
It can be argued that god did create humanity for a purpose, as why would he endow us with sense,
reason and intellect if he intended us to forgo their use? It therefore logically follows that we must
have some purpose, hidden or not that we are expected to fulfil, also why would the bible detail the
creation of humans in such detail as is demonstrated in genesis 2, why would god, in this story,
prioritise mankind over all others when the purpose if said entities is made apparent as animals are
made to feed man, so if god endeavoured to assign a purpose to those supposedly subservient to
mankind, why would he not give a purpose for mankind to fulfil, why also, according to the ... Show

However this is also subject to a counter argument, as perhaps it could be argued that god has
endowed us with intellect, so perhaps we are supposed to use that intellect to discern what our purpose
is, in my personal opinion, it is naïve to suggest that mankind has a singular purpose, as I believe that
our purpose is ever changing and exists in a constant state of flux, as our purpose cannot be simply to
worship god, or to reproduce, no, I believe that mankind does not have a singular purpose as such, as
is implied in the question, as would god not have endowed us simply with the qualities necessary in
order to fulfil a singular purpose, therefore unless said purpose was extremely intricate in its
guidelines, we would have been left with qualities missing, as if our purpose was simply to worship
god, why would god give us the sense of knowledge that leads us to question his very existence,
would it not be beneficial for him to limit us in our intellect, that we will flourish as a species but not
be granted the capability for critical analysis which leads us to doubt

Isolation In The Painted Door By Sinclair Ross
The author Sinclair Ross is implying that the natural landscape and the environment in The Painted
Door serve as a metaphor for Ann s sense of isolation. In the beginning of the story, Ann mentions that
There was a double wheel around the moon which leads Ann to believe that they could expect a storm
. Ann s uneasiness for the storm to come foreshadows the storm that would separate Ann and John,
leaving Ann all alone with nothing but her thoughts until Steven arrives. Ann later observes the distant
farmsteads which she believes serve to intensify a sense of isolation in Ann before John leaves. This is
a direct metaphor on John and Ann s relationship, John is being very distant in their relationship and
as a result Ann feels a sense of isolation in their relationship and that she wanted something of John
and not pretty clothes, when she would be too old to wear them . ... Show more content on

Shortly after John leaves, Ann left with a silence weighing upon her and as she looks at the frozen
silence of the bitter fields , now there is really distance between her now and John . Now the
environment is reflecting on the physical distance between Ann and John, leaving Ann alone with
nobody to talk to. This develops Ann s sense of isolation to become both physically and emotionally
separated from John. The arrival of Steven in the story served to put at end of Ann s isolation as the
storm had unnerved her and the assurance of [Steven s] touch and voice has given her an hysteria of
relief . This shows that unlike John who never talked Steven reassures Ann saying that there s nothing
to be afraid of now . Steven s presence throws away all Ann s feeling of

The Crusades Essay
In 1095, at the Council of Clermont, Pope Urban II began a striking expedition to Jerusalem in order
to release the city from Muslim control. His moving campaign and the promise of an immense reward
was inspirational to the many willing participants. One must essentially understand that the leaders of
these crusades connected almost every accomplishment to the works of God, and felt a huge moral
obligation to take back what once belonged to Him. The extent of the crusades shows the deep
devotion that most of Western Europe had towards Christianity and the desire to rid the world of
unnecessary evils.
During the Middle Ages, heresy was one of the prime issues that affected the solidarity of the Church.

The general consensus of the Western European societies classified their enemies as anyone who
differed even slightly from the Catholic beliefs. Their society appears to be a very strict and conformal
atmosphere in which autonomy did not play much of a role. As such, in regards to the sentencing of
the Count of Toulouse the writings on the crusades contain much information that points to the choice
of conversion or condemnation. Eternal damnation was believed to be the result of a person who did
not show repentance or debarred heresy, and shows no devotion to the cause of reconciliation.
Even though the principal language used throughout the crusades was Latin, the context of it was used
in a multitude of ways. The broad applicability of Latin was used because it was the official language
of the Roman church. The Church was the main source of education and therefore created a web of
writings, textbooks, and biblical translations which allowed much of Europe and Asia Minor to
understand the message of Western Christianity. The direct meaning of the word crusade was taking
the cross though this period was not named as such until later in the sixteenth century. The soldiers of
the Crusades apperceived that the idea of taking one s cross meant to follow Christ, which allowed for
such substantial influence

Pathological Consideration Of Acute Chest Pain Essay
PATHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATION OF ACUTE CHEST PAIN
Chest pain is among the most every now and again assessed introducing complaints in the emergency
department (ED). Diagnostic etiologies range from benign to life debilitating. Inability to diagnose the
life debilitating chest emergencies can prompt to catastrophic medical and legal results for the patient
and physician separately (Boie, 2005).
The first approach to assessing chest pain incorporates excluding life threatening reasons, which for
the most part incorporate (1)coronary artery disease (Kettunen and Talvensaari ,2009) (2)acute aortic
syndrome (AAS) (3)pulmonary embolism (PE) (4)esophageal rupture (5)tension pneumothorax and
(6)pericardial tamponade (Butler and Swencki, 2006). I Pathology of Pulmonary embolism (PE):
As the third most common reason of cardiovascular death after myocardial ischemia and stroke,
pulmonary embolism (PE) is a conceivably fatal condition connected with significant morbidity and
mortality (Araoz et al., 2007).
PE and DVT are two clinical presentations of venous thrombo embolism and offer the same
predisposing factors. In many cases PE is a result of DVT (Pitts et al., 2008).
Thrombi generally form in the deep veins of the calf and after that propagate into the proximal veins,
including and above the popliteal veins, from which they will properly embolize. Around 79% of

Light And Dark In The Great Gatsby
I don t tell the truth, I tell what ought to be truth. And if that is sinful, then let me be damned for it!
(Williams 145). The common theme of light and dark is used by American authors to help reveal truth.
Characters hiding from the truth also hide from the light. These characters hide because they are
scared of revealing the truth to others and to themselves. When Blanche describes her view on the
truth, she doesn t know that she almost predicts the tragic end to her life, which can be blamed on her
lies. Hiding from the light illustrates instability and an apprehensive life. In an attempt to appear a

The lies characters create are often to cover up a past they are not proud of. In A Streetcar Named
Desire, Blanche is a mysterious who has a strong distaste for being in direct light. She relies on the
dark to hide her insincerity. When she first arrives at her sister s home, she describes how she can t

strong disfavor towards light reveals Blanche s lies throughout the novel. Blanche s main lie is her

Advantages Of Reflexive Standardization Of The Information...
According to Ole Hanseth et al (2010), reflexive standardization is the process of supporting efforts to
bring about order and organization in a function, and instead of achieving positive results, negative
results are achieved. Reflexive standardization brings about negative results as a result of failing to be
planned adequately from the onset. For instance, take for example the Norwegian hospital; the
development of the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) was developed as a fragmented record of
databases. The records brought about challenges in the manner in which they were accessed and as a
result, there was need to redesign the system. Instead of setting aside a development team to redesign
the system based on thorough research, the hospital decided to centralize the database and create
several views for different system users to view these records. This was deemed to be the reflexive
standardization of the information system. It had both advantages and disadvantages as discussed.
Necessity and Advantages

did not do much to increase service delivery thus came off as a hindrance to the success of the hospital
s functions. The system was also deemed by Ole Hanseth (2010) as a complex system. The word
complex is defined with respect to the ability of the new practitioners to understand the use of the
system. By being complex, the system fails in its quest to become a better solution as opposed to

Christianity and Life After Death Essay
Christianity and Life After Death
Life after death is an essential part of the Christian religion. Jesus, the son of god, died on the cross
and three days later he rose again from the dead, the resurrection. Hundreds of people saw him. This
has given Christians the hope that when they die, they will live on in another place. Christians believe
in heaven and hell. If a person lives a good moral life they can expect to get to heaven, when they die.
If they live an immoral life then perhaps hell will be an alternative.
Luke 23:42

today you will be with me in paradise. Jesus was crucified ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Faith is very important to Christians. No one living today has seen god, and no one has seen heaven or
hell. However, Christians still believe that they will be resurrected. This is faith, belief in something
that cannot be seen.
In Anglican, orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions smearing the sick are a ceremonial action which
can be requested for very ill people. When it is performed on a dying person it is often referred to as
the last rites . It involves rubbing oil on the person s forehead and in the Roman Catholic tradition, the
feet and the hands too. It symbolizes the healing of the mind and the strengthening of spirit and is
accompanied by special prayers.
At the death candles are often placed near the coffin as a symbol for the future life and a reminder of
the light of Christ who is the means of redemption. In Roman Catholic and orthodox services incense,
with its smoke rising upwards as a symbol of prayer, is sprinkled over the coffin
After death the place of burial is marked with a stone, often in the shape of a cross as a reminder of
Jesus death and resurrection. Some churches have a memorial garden where the ashes of cremated
people are placed with plaques, often with Christian symbols and words.
In many towns and villages there is a stone memorial cross to commemorate those who have dies in
the two world wars. Special services

Early Automobiles . Vehicles Have Changed Over Time Like
Early Automobiles Vehicles have changed over time like many other things, but the engine that
powers these vehicles has gone through the most changes. The internal combustion engine has become
a huge part in everyday life. These engines have allowed people to travel across the country, generate
electricity, and fly around the world. This engine has been a perpetual source of exploration ever since
Henry Ford mass produced the first Model T. Automobiles have evolved over time along with many
other things; there are many fundamentals to learn about how the engine works, different types of
engines, and the history of the gas engine. The first thing to learn is how the basic engine works.

7). The combustion increases the temperature of the exhaust gases, any residual air in the combustion
chamber, and the combustion chamber itself. From the ideal gas law, the increased temperature of the
gases also produces an increased pressure in the combustion chamber; the high pressure of the gases
acting on the face of the piston cause the piston to move to which initiates the power stroke (para. 8).
Unlike the compression stroke, the hot gas does work on the piston during the power stroke. The force
on the piston is transmitted by the piston rod to the crankshaft, where the linear motion of the piston is
converted to angular motion of the crankshaft. Hall s article for NASA states that the work done on the
piston is then used to turn the shaft (para. 8). Having produced the igniting spark, the electrical contact
remains opened. During the power stroke, the volume occupied by the gases is increased because of
the piston motion and no heat is transferred to the fuel/air mixture (para. 9). As the volume is
increased because of the piston s motion, the pressure and temperature of the gas are decreased. Heat
that is left over from the power stroke is now transferred to the water in the water jacket until the
pressure approaches atmospheric pressure; the

The Witch Wins in Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton
In the small, desolate town of Starkfield, Massachusetts, Ethan Frome lives a life of poverty. Not only
does he live hopelessly, but he was a prisoner for life to the economy (Ammons 2). A young engineer
from outside of town narrates the beginning of the story. He develops a curiosity towards Ethan Frome
and the smash up that he hears about in bits and pieces. Later, due to a terrible winter storm that
caused the snow itself to seem like a part of the thickening darkness, to be the winter night itself
descending on us layer by layer (Wharton 20), the narrator is forced to stay the night at Frome s. As he
enters the unfamiliar house, the story flashes back twenty four years to Ethan Frome s young life.

Mattie has beautiful dark hair, rosy red cheeks, and stunningly pale skin. Her hair is soft yet springy,
like certain mosses on warm slopes, and had the faint woody fragrance of fresh sawdust in the sun

Silverstein s The Giving Tree
Even though there are some similarities between these two books, The Giving Tree was written with
no known religious intention. It was first published in 1964 by Harper Row and was written and
illustrated by Silverstein (Levy). He was a controversial children s book author due to his long
connection with Playboy and his lack of patience around families. Despite this, Silverstein sold more
than ten million copies of The Giving Tree, as it still remains a classic picture book. It has a prominent
green cover but the words and pictures are printed in black and white and displayed in a minimalistic
manner. There are many interpretations of what the actual relationship of the boy and tree is based on.

The apple leaving the tree s branches shows a foreshowing of the sacrifice the tree will give. The boy

The ever budding grass and the permanent letters can be seen as a love that never dies for the boy

In the late 18th century some doctors noticed that being dirty and lacking sanitation increased the rate

carbolic acid spray, which would be sprayed on wounds and pumped into the air surrounding an

Abigail Adams Book Critique In the novel, Abigail Adams: A Revolutionary American Woman,
Charles Akers portrays the life of a strong, revolutionary woman named Abigail Adams. She was
known as the first lady of the United States under John Adams and she played an indirect role in
influencing the American Revolution. She is called one of the founders of the country for her
revolutionary thinking and her being a rights activist. Abigail Adams faced many hardships throughout
her life. She was the daughter of a minister and had two sisters and a brother. In the 1700 s, children
did not have a high survival rate due to the amount of diseases and nothing to treat them with. Abigail
Adams said in her old age that she was always sick (Akers 5). This reminds people how tough life was
in the 1700 s and how easy it was to pass away from a mere cold. Abigail also did not have any
education growing up. Women, in the colonial era, were not supposed to have an education and were
supposed to watch the kids, cook, and clean. Readers of this book learn that many women back then
were illiterate and were self taught, if they had any education. Abigail did find a love for literature due
to her sister s spouse, Richard Cranch. He influenced her love for literature at a young age and she
started to become more literate. Along with the disease and educational deficiency, women were
considered as property. A young woman could either give up

William Shakespeare s As You Like It As a Study of Perception and Misperception
The concepts of perception and misperception are common themes in many of Shakespeare s plays
and can be found in his comedies, tragedies and histories alike. Shakespeare explores these often
parallel elements through several different forms in his work, such as disguise, mistaken identity and
blindness, and events caused by these can lead to amusing, confusing or sometimes tragic
consequences, depending on the nature of the plays themselves.
The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines perception as the ability to see, hear or become aware of

The forest of Arden is a particular example of how the perception of the same thing can vary greatly
between different people in As You Like It and can change completely in the mind of one person. The
forest is the place to which Rosalind s father, Duke Senior, is banished, and to which Rosalind and
Celia flee following the wrath of Celia s father, Duke Frederick. Indeed, it is the setting for much of
the action in the play and comes to mean several things to several characters.
The forest represents nature in the standard opposition between that and civilisation, which is
represented by the other setting in the play, the court. Arden is perceived by characters such as Duke
Senior and his followers as an idyllic and uncorrupted place, whereas the civilised world is seen as
irrationally cruel and ruined by humankind. The Duke expresses this with his speech eulogising the
forest, hath not old custom made this life more sweet than that of painted pomp? Are not these woods
more free from peril than the envious court?…this our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues

The British Renaissance Produced Many Types of Literature and Was Influenced By
Shakespeare, Marlow, and Spenser
The British Renaissance produced many types of literature for the world to see. Shakespeare, Spenser,
and Marlowe all contributed to the shaping of the time period. Christopher Marlowe s quot; The
Passionate Shepherd to His Love quot; portrays one of the typical love poems that can be seen from
the Renaissance. A man is in search of the love of another girl, or woman. Sir Walter Raleigh wrote a
poem in response to this passage of Marlowe s entitled quot; The Nymph s
Reply to the Shepherd. quot; Although the name of the girl is not stated anywhere in the former poem,
Raleigh decided to use a wood nymph as his subject. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His age also brings up another very interesting view of Marlowe s. In the poem, Marlowe expresses
the idea that age has no influence upon love and a person s feelings.
The shallow rivers, waterfalls, birds singing, and flowers all personify the
Shepherd s feeling that age has nothing to do with love and his hopes of winning the younger girl s
heart. The scene that is created is highly discernible as
Spring, the time of year associated with love and light heartedness. The allusions to these things also
demonstrates the Shepherd s hollow sense of hope.
The Shepherd tries to lure the girl by offering her everything in the world.
This materialism clearly shows that Marlowe believes that only fancy trinkets and beautiful
possessions will win the heart of a girl. In virtually every stanza, there is a reference to a nicety that
the Shepherd offers the girl in pursuitof her love.
A belt of straw and ivy buds,
With coral clasps and amber studs;
Christopher Marlowe s Shepherd clearly believes that the only surefire way of attaining love would be
to offer as much as you can and lure your subject into a false sense of being loved by giving her (or
him) the world.
The world means nothing to Sir Walter Raleigh s Nymph, the girl Raleigh presumes to be the object of
the Shepherd s pleas, in his poem entitled quot; The
Nymph s Reply to the Shepherd quot; in direct response to Christopher Marlowe. The beautiful forest
creature is young compared to the elderly

An employee must work for the organization for at least 12months and be at least 21 or older to

open enrollment though the process may change in the near future to automatic enrollment. The idea
of doing an automatic enrollment will automatically enroll each and every employee in that particular

An Analysis Of Haruki Murakami s On Seeing The 100 %...
The concept of fate and destiny continues to prevail mankind and it is usually associated with the kind
of romance that is meant to be . At a certain point in our lives, we encounter an individual whom we
feel an immediate connection to. There is a belief that if two hearts are meant for each other, fate will
bring the two individuals together. Until now, this idea continues to bewilder people and it makes
them think whether fate and destiny truly exists or are important encounters just a coincidence. Haruki
Murakami s On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning depicts how an individual
missed an ideal opportunity, which is caused by his preoccupation with fantasy rather than facing
reality. Haruki Murakami is known for his unique writing style since he effectively blends normality
with surrealism. Majority of his short stories deal with recurring melancholic themes such as loss and
loneliness. In addition, his stories are usually in the first person narrative for he wants his main
character to be an independent being who values solitude over romance. All of these characteristics
are well manifested in the short story that will be analyzed. On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One

Description Of The Poem Prologue

I dive to the ground, and dirt greets my face. Spitting soil from my mouth, I scramble into the nearby

reaching the desired effect confusion. I shove him hard, toppling the scrawny grunt, then sprint the

Analysis Of The BBC Real Estate Programme
The BBC started in 2001 a programme aimed to reduce the size of its property estate, in line with their
strategy to offer the licence fee payers better value for money. This report seeks to analyse how the
BBC managed its real estate programme and if the management benchmarks with the framework for
large capital programme management offered by ____. Lessons learnt from this programme will be
extracted, and it will be assessed whether the BBC is ultimately working towards its Value for Money
and Quality First Strategy, through the implementation of its estate programme.
1. INTRODUCTION (335)
The British Broadcasting Corporation also known as the BBC, is one of the oldest public broadcasting
companies in the world. Funding its operation mainly through licence fees paid by the public
(Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2016), the BBC and its Trust have the responsibility of spending public
funds efficiently and ensuring public value and appeal (BBC Trust, 2016).
Throughout its history the BBC has attempted to become more cost effective. Since the launch of the
producer choice strategy in 1993 (Felix, 2000), it has been argued that to achieve this they have
battled not only the issues of managerial bureaucracy (Harris et al., 2006), but also the inherent costs
of adapting its infrastructure to new broadcasting technologies (Wegg Prosser, 2001).
In a more recent stride and following the guidance from the BBC Governors and internal auditors, the
BBC set new strategic objectives in

The Importance Of Confucianism In Chinese Culture
China is considered to be the first modern state in the world and has existed for thousands of years.
Throughout the millennia, this civilisation and its people have continued to develop the cultural
practices such as sacred teachings, which consequently has influenced their art style. Therefore, in this
essay I will explore and compared themes such as Confucianism, Taoism and even their written word
and how those have influences art in China through the ages. The concept of Confucianism began over
two thousand five hundred years ago, and it is largely defined by three key principles. That etiquette is
integral to harmony, authority is to be respected and most importantly tradition and history is to be
remembered and revered. All three of these principles are equally important and Confucians believe
that these teachings are the best way to have a peaceful and uncorrupted society and the best way to
carry yourself as a person. However, I claimed that reverence towards tradition was the most
important principle because I have found that it is the most common theme related to Confucianism
that appears in Chinese art. You can see this in Xie He s Six Principles of Painting written in 550c. His
sixth principle of `Transmission by Copying emphasises the importance of working from the masters
artwork so you can learn from them and develop your own practice. The most common way this was
manifested is when painters remake previous masters work. It is the main way we see older

The Reformation And The Theological Tenets Of The Reformation
The view that salvation can be attained through faith alone was one largely responsible for the
theological shift that was observed across Europe during the Reformation, and was the ideology that
created the rift that still exists between the Catholic and Protestant church. Whilst the English
Reformation is said to have begun with the Act of Supremacy and the break from Rome, Henry VIII s
Church of England remained doctrinally conservative and did not accept the Protestant affirmation
that salvation could be attained by faith alone. Indeed, it was not until Elizabeth s religious settlement
that justification by faith was incorporated into the doctrine of the Church of England. However, this
is not to say that it was not the key theological tenet of the English Reformation, just as it was the key
doctrine across Europe, but rather that Henry VIII s Reformation may be viewed largely as a political
rather than a theological one.
In 1520, Luther wrote that, faith... unites the soul with Christ, as a bride united with her bridegroom .
In this, Luther highlights the importance of establishing an intimate relationship between Christ and
the believer. The faith that Luther describes is one that is more than simply realising that Christ s word
is full of grace; it is a formed faith, as Aquinas would define, one where the believer actively assents
to Christ s salvific love. Many of Luther s contemporaries in the Catholic tradition, alongside many
Lutheran critics today, criticise his

Green Lake Observation
Green Lake in the Bishop Creek Canyon is a sacred place and the happy hunting ground for the
ancestors of the Paiute people. Evidence of the habitation of these people goes back thousands of
years and indicates that this area was of prime importance for food gathering. The men hunted deer
and mountain sheep while the women and children gathered and prepared food. Everybody pitched in
on all the other chores like making camp. Summer was a wonderful time in the mountains of the
Eastern Sierra for the Paiute people. They looked forward to getting up to the higher elevations to beat
the heat of the infernal Owens Valley. Many happy times were shared in the high mountain camps of
the Paiutes. They established relationships, enjoyed the flowers in the meadows, and lived their life to

That trapper will never find that trap again. Another dog I had got caught off Hwy 120 in a trap when
she was only six months old. It so traumatized her that I had a hard time calming her down to get the
trap off her little paw. So, you can understand why I do not care much for trapping or the people that
do it. Moving on up the trail there is evidence of avalanches and the Limber pines are all wiped out.
Some are bent over and still alive, because their roots are attached. Others are a splintered mess from
the shock wave produced by an avalanche. This is an unbelievable force that can generate an air blast
up to 200 miles per hour. Everything in its path gets wiped out and debris like trees and rock are
carried for great distances. Standing in one of these avalanche paths in winter would mean sudden
death with no

Top Glove Company Background

Established in 1991 with only one factory and three production lines, Top Glove has since grown by
leaps and bounds to become the world s largest rubber glove manufacturer.
Top Glove places customer satisfaction at the very heart of its business; hence has put a great deal of
emphasis on research and development to ensure continual improvement in its product quality and
production efficiency.

Top Glove will be embarking on a 3 year rapid expansion in production lines by adding another 55
lines in FY8/05, 66 lines in FY8/06 and 56 lines in FY8/07, in its Phuket, Hatyai, Shanghai and Klang
factories. This would require a capex of about RM60m and RM66m in FY8/05 and FY/06
respectively.
II. Penetration into new markets. Top Glove targets to have a customer base of 600 by December 2005
from 500 at present by increasing its export destinations to 160 from 145 currently. Countries
providing further potential include Russia, Brazil, Portugal, Middle East and the US.
III. Shifting towards more value added products. In line with the industry s trend of favouring powder
free gloves, Top Glove is increasing its powder free lines resulting in a product mix of 30% by the
year 2006 from the current 17%. Apart from that, Top Glove will be producing more higher margin
products such as nitrile and surgical gloves when its future capacity is in place.
IV. One Stop Glove Sourcing Centre . Top Glove would still maintain its role as a One Stop Glove
Sourcing Centre which has altogether a mix of 12 product range although it will be emphasizing on
the more value added range. Compared to other glove manufacturers, Top Glove is the only company
in Malaysia that is able to manufacture all the varieties of gloves for healthcare, dental, food
packaging, household, industrial, cleanroom as well as operation room. The broad choices has also

Upton Sinclair s The Jungle
In 1906, American Writer, Upton Sinclair wrote the novel The Jungle to portray the harsh working
conditions for immigrants working in the United states. The original purpose of the book was to
describe the American meatpacking industry and the working conditions associated with it to promote
socialism. Author Upton Sinclair Commented, after the books release I aimed at the public s heart, and
by accident I hit it in the stomach. Ironically enough the book promoted concern for the health
violations and unsanitary working conditions in the early twentieth century. The book the Jungle
contributed to the Meat Inspection Act and reform.
Sinclair was a muckraker, a journalist who exposed corruption, and was hired to write about and
expose the labor

The Whaling Of Whaling Nations
1. What is the IWC? In 1946, whaling nations established the International Convention for the
Regulation of Whaling in order to prohibit the killing of certain endangered whale species, set quotas
and minimum size for whales caught commercially and regulate the whaling seasons. This convention
was not an environmental agreement, but a club of whaling nations to regulate the practice of catching
whales. The International Whaling Commission, (IWC), was the decision making body in charge of
the regime and was tasked with the duty of protecting this marine species. Unfortunately, not only was
the IWC largely toothless in terms of enforcing their rules, many of their actions were actually
counterproductive. The IWC would met in secret to haggle over quotas that were set so high more
whales were being killed than before the convention and the total number of whales killed doubled
between 1951 and 1962. Even worse, while the major whaling nations were members of the IWC,
many developing countries refused to join or abide by its decisions and even went so far as to allow
pirate whalers who sold their products to Japan to operate within their territories. Overall, the IWC
was largely ineffective until the blue whale became endangered in the 1960 s. 2. What is land
degradation neutrality? Land Degradation Neutrality was defined at COP12 (12th meeting of the
Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity) in 2015 as A state whereby the
amount and quality of land

Catherine A. Lutz
Yes, it s only Reservation Blues but I like it: On the Connection between Christian and Native
Religions
One of the most interesting aspects of the anthropological study of Catherine A. Lutz, entitled
Unnatural Emotions, is that the author applies the same sort of intense self examination to her own
project as an anthropologist amongst the Ifaluk as she does to the Ifaluk themselves. Every individual
at some point in his or her own life has been confronted with the surprise, after all, that someone
seems exactly like me. Or, conversely, one is shocked how another human animal, possessing roughly
the same physical attributes of one s genus and species as one s self, could behave in such a
horrible/wonderful fashion, totally unlike ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But beyond this initial emotional connection, the reader s sense of strangeness and estrangement of the
community is again reborn by the tone of the narrative and the detailed though magical realist
evocation of Native, Western reservation life. The seamless blend of Native American folklore and
Catholicism is one of the oddest aspects of the novel to someone personally uninitiated and unfamiliar
with Native religions, except on a superficial level. For instance, one of the novel s backup vocalists
Checkers Warm Water develops a relationship with the reservation priest. It is difficult, once one
accepts the level of oppression experienced by these Native American individuals, to fully understand
why Christianity, the religion of Caucasians, would have any draw at all. Why doesn t Checkers
simply love her own Native religion and her own Native people through the context of that tradition?
Why a priest?
The only answer is perhaps found in the idea that many of the Indian characters seek, through rock
and roll and through Catholicism as well, the sort of individualistic _expression

Contemporary Theories Of Subcultures
A subculture is considered a group of dominant people or culture that has been defined in its norms,
values, and interests, which are often inconsistent to those of large groups. (Bohm Vogel, 2011)
Subcultures were created when a group of people that share the same beliefs or circumstances finds
themselves cut off from society. (Bohm Vogel, 2011) These groups are distinct from those of the
majority and are held by a group into a broader society. Most subcultures are recognized by their age
of its members, or by race, ethnicity, class, gender, and their qualities that may be aesthetic, religious,
occupational, political, and sexual or a combination of these factors. However, people create
subcultures as a way to feel accepted while also signifying that they are different from other groups.
The subculture theory focuses on consistent distinctiveness, identity, commitment, and autonomy.
The first subculture group I would like to recognize is the police they are law enforcement officers
with specific types of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. I place them in the subculture category because
of they spend their time dealing with crime; therefore they tend to be judgmental towards members of
the public viewing them as untrustworthy and potentially hostile; therefore, the public view the police
as being unreliable and abusive as well. The police depend on their cohorts to back them up, and
mostly teamwork to apprehend criminals; therefore, it creates a dynamic of police

Austin Student Affairs
Student Affairs at UT Austin
Introduction
Student affairs is the unit at a higher education institution that typically provides support and services
for students on campus. Growth and development are focus areas and students are encouraged to turn
to student affairs for opportunities outside of the classroom. This paper will evaluate The University of
Texas at Austin s Division of Student Affairs. It will also review its mission, position on assessment
and diversity, essential competencies, organization frames and archetypes, and applicable
development theories.
The Student Affairs Mission in Action

(2011), assessment data yield information about potential strengths and weaknesses in planning,
programming, and policymaking (p. 324). At this time, a campus wide assessment for Student Affairs
cannot be located in the Student Affairs or the UT website. However, based on the 2014 2015 Budget
Summary, there is a budget category for academic enhancement (Knight, 2015). UT is a research
university and a great deal of funding goes towards funding research. If Student Affairs was able to
illustrate the academic, programmatic, and budgetary benefit of assessment and survey results, there is
a chance the academic enhancement funding could be used to finance

Public Shaming Of An Olympic Weightlifter
Public Shaming of an Olympic Weightlifter Public shaming is a highly debated and broad topic. First
what is public shaming? Public shaming(humiliation) is the dishonoring showcase of a person, usually
an offender or a prisoner, especially in a public place. It was regularly used as a form of punishment in
former times, and is still practiced by different means in the modern era(Wikipedia). Public shaming is
usually used as the primary form of punishment. It can destroy someones life within hours with the
use of social media. Once embarrassing information about a person is online, it s never going to go
away.(Stryker) Public shaming is a brutal form of punishment and has a strong argument that it should
no longer be used because of the repercussions it could have on ones life, ... Show more content on

But public shaming can come as a secondary effect that was not initially the punishment, and could be
more serve than the initial punishment. One case where public shaming slides in as a secondary
punishment that is unjust and extreme is on a drug ban of an olympic athlete. Olympic athletes are
held up to the highest standard and are role models for many. Olympic weightlifters are extremely
proud and have a lot of pride in themselves and their country. Weightlifters are held up to high
standards like all olympic athletes. When an olympic weightlifter gets a doping ban the primary
consequence is medal striping and not being able to compete for 4 years. This primary punishment isn
t the most severe. Public shaming isn t the initial punishment for a positive drug test for an olympic
weightlifter, but it is the most severe punishment by shaming them personally, shaming their country,
and their achievements. Public shaming for a positive drug test

  • 2. Gatsby Social Hierarchy In any great novel, an understanding of the era in which the story is set can lead to a deeper appreciation of the author s themes and characters. For example, the themes that preoccupied F. Scott Fitzgerald, issues of social class, the dynamics of prohibition, and the culture of excessive consumption, would be difficult to convey on their own. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the social, political, and moral environment of America in the 1920s sheds greater light on the otherwise complex forces that drive the characters in The Great Gatsby. The complex social hierarchy of America in the Twenties is a major factor in the lives of the characters in The Great Gatsby, especially Gatsby himself. From the time he falls in love with Daisy, Gatsby strives to ascend into her social class so that he will be worthy of her. The narrator tells us, He let her believe that he was a person from much the same stratum as herself that he was fully able to take care of her (Fitzgerald 149). From then on, everything he does is driven by this desire to break ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His extravagant lifestyle is best seen in the lavish parties he regularly throws. The narrator captures the image of waste, saying, Every Friday five crates of oranges and lemons arrived from a fruitier in New York every Monday these same oranges and lemons left his back door in a pyramid of pulp less halves (Fitzgerald 39). In connection with what happened last season, We see the status of Ragner s health coming into play again and it was not good. His wife ruled his land while he was away. She doesn t really want to give up her rule of the place. We also see his brother in Paris where he s living out the deal he was ofter by the king of the city. Which include being married to his daughter and defending Paris, against the Vikings in exchange for land and a title. There is also a little bit of time jump that occur as well. Which do not hurt the episode in my opinion. Its not like done in a way that is awkard or doesn t work for the flow of the plot that is gettng started. I really like the near death scene that feature Ragner and its showing to him of what is to come. Its just seem to very cool to me. It consists of segments which are constructed somewhere else and are then floated at the tunnel site to be linked together. These tunnels are normally used together with other tunnel construction methods like bored tunnel, etc. This method is commonly used for road and rail crossings of river, sea channels/ harbors, etc. Refer Exhibit 7 for how it works This method has many advantages: 1. Cost effective 2. Speedy construction 3. Resistant to earthquakes 4. Safety during construction Some of the disadvantages are: 1. It would have direct contact with water hence it is important to have a careful waterproofing design. 2. • 7. The Negative Consequences Of Noise Pollution Ahmed Sami Hassan Dr. Clark ENG 1101 06 June 2015 Noise Pollution What is the Noise Pollution? The term noise pollution used to define unwanted sounds that come from many sources such as barking dogs, loud music; vehicles, aircraft and rail transport; air conditioners, factories; amplified music and construction work released into the environment. Noise pollution has adverse effects on both human health and environment. One of the most obvious negative consequences of prolonged exposure to noise is hearing loss. Studies show that people who have been regularly exposed to intense noise, due to the nature of their work, have decreased hearing sensibility, compared to those who have worked in more quiet conditions. The most disturbing source of noise pollution stems from traffic (Healthy Hearing). Elevated sound levels cause changes in the structure of the inner ear which results in irreversible hearing loss. The Studies found any sound levels crosses the 70dB mark; it becomes noise for the ear. Noise levels above 80 decibels produce damaging effects to the ear. When ear is exposed to extreme loud noise (above 100 decibels) for a considerable period of time, it can cause irreparable damage and lead to permanent hearing loss. Sleep Disturbances is one of the noise pollution effects that can deter your overall well being. Noise can interrupt a good night s sleep, and when this occurs, the person feels extremely annoyed and uncomfortable. People deprived of uninterrupted sleep show a sharp dip in their energy levels which often results into extreme fatigue. This can considerably decrease a person s ability to work efficiently. Noise pollution may also lead to mental health problems. Exposure to loud sound can result in elevated stress levels as well as stimulate violent behavior. A constant noise in the vicinity can also trigger headaches, make people tense and anxious, and disturb emotional balance. Another effect of noise pollution is on cardiovascular issues. Studies have shown that high intensity sound cause a dramatic rise in blood pressure as noise levels constrict the arteries, disrupting the blood flow. The heart rate (the number of heartbeats per minute) also increases. These sudden abnormal changes in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Changes in the global economy, technology, and race relations during the last 30 years have necessitated new and innovative analyses and policy responses. A common thread which weaves throughout many of the studies reviewed here is the dynamics of migration. In When Work Disappears, immigrants provide comparative data with which to highlight the problems of ghetto poverty affecting blacks. In No Shame in My Game, Puerto Rican and Dominican immigrants are part of the changing demographics in Harlem. In Canarsie, the possible migration of blacks into a working/middle class neighborhood prompts conservative backlash from a ... Wilson s other policy recommendations include suburb city economic partnerships, many of which coincide with Jargowsky s recommendations in Poverty and Place, as well as policies revolving around the earned income tax credit (EITC) and public jobs of last resort, which are part of policy recommendations shared by David Ellwood and Herbert Gans (see below). In No Shame in My Game, anthropologist Katherine Newman attempts to draw greater attention to the plight of the working poor rather than the jobless poor. She and her research team explore the lives of Harlem s working poor, primarily focusing on the fast food industry or burger flippers as the subject for her largely ethnographic study. One of the important insights articulated in her study is the extended familial structures/networks that rely on wage and welfare income as a means of survival, in addition to providing resources such as child care: networks she identifies in African American, Dominican, and Puerto Rican working poor families in Harlem. Thus, welfare reform restructuring will not only impact those families who rely solely on welfare for survival, but also on those working poor families ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. God Created Humanity For A Purpose Assess the claim that god created humanity for a purpose It can be argued that god did create humanity for a purpose, as why would he endow us with sense, reason and intellect if he intended us to forgo their use? It therefore logically follows that we must have some purpose, hidden or not that we are expected to fulfil, also why would the bible detail the creation of humans in such detail as is demonstrated in genesis 2, why would god, in this story, prioritise mankind over all others when the purpose if said entities is made apparent as animals are made to feed man, so if god endeavoured to assign a purpose to those supposedly subservient to mankind, why would he not give a purpose for mankind to fulfil, why also, according to the ... • 13. Isolation In The Painted Door By Sinclair Ross The author Sinclair Ross is implying that the natural landscape and the environment in The Painted Door serve as a metaphor for Ann s sense of isolation. In the beginning of the story, Ann mentions that There was a double wheel around the moon which leads Ann to believe that they could expect a storm . Ann s uneasiness for the storm to come foreshadows the storm that would separate Ann and John, leaving Ann all alone with nothing but her thoughts until Steven arrives. Ann later observes the distant farmsteads which she believes serve to intensify a sense of isolation in Ann before John leaves. This is a direct metaphor on John and Ann s relationship, John is being very distant in their relationship and as a result Ann feels a sense of isolation in their relationship and that she wanted something of John and not pretty clothes, when she would be too old to wear them . ... This develops Ann s sense of isolation to become both physically and emotionally separated from John. The arrival of Steven in the story served to put at end of Ann s isolation as the storm had unnerved her and the assurance of [Steven s] touch and voice has given her an hysteria of relief . His moving campaign and the promise of an immense reward was inspirational to the many willing participants. One must essentially understand that the leaders of these crusades connected almost every accomplishment to the works of God, and felt a huge moral obligation to take back what once belonged to Him. The extent of the crusades shows the deep devotion that most of Western Europe had towards Christianity and the desire to rid the world of unnecessary evils. The general consensus of the Western European societies classified their enemies as anyone who differed even slightly from the Catholic beliefs. Their society appears to be a very strict and conformal atmosphere in which autonomy did not play much of a role. As such, in regards to the sentencing of the Count of Toulouse the writings on the crusades contain much information that points to the choice of conversion or condemnation. Eternal damnation was believed to be the result of a person who did not show repentance or debarred heresy, and shows no devotion to the cause of reconciliation. Even though the principal language used throughout the crusades was Latin, the context of it was used in a multitude of ways. The broad applicability of Latin was used because it was the official language of the Roman church. The Church was the main source of education and therefore created a web of writings, textbooks, and biblical translations which allowed much of Europe and Asia Minor to understand the message of Western Christianity. The direct meaning of the word crusade was taking the cross though this period was not named as such until later in the sixteenth century. These characters hide because they are scared of revealing the truth to others and to themselves. When Blanche describes her view on the truth, she doesn t know that she almost predicts the tragic end to her life, which can be blamed on her lies. • 20. Advantages Of Reflexive Standardization Of The Information... According to Ole Hanseth et al (2010), reflexive standardization is the process of supporting efforts to bring about order and organization in a function, and instead of achieving positive results, negative results are achieved. Reflexive standardization brings about negative results as a result of failing to be planned adequately from the onset. For instance, take for example the Norwegian hospital; the development of the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) was developed as a fragmented record of databases. The records brought about challenges in the manner in which they were accessed and as a result, there was need to redesign the system. Instead of setting aside a development team to redesign the system based on thorough research, the hospital decided to centralize the database and create several views for different system users to view these records. This was deemed to be the reflexive standardization of the information system. It had both advantages and disadvantages as discussed. Jesus, the son of god, died on the cross and three days later he rose again from the dead, the resurrection. Hundreds of people saw him. If a person lives a good moral life they can expect to get to heaven, when they die. If they live an immoral life then perhaps hell will be an alternative. The combustion increases the temperature of the exhaust gases, any residual air in the combustion chamber, and the combustion chamber itself. From the ideal gas law, the increased temperature of the gases also produces an increased pressure in the combustion chamber; the high pressure of the gases acting on the face of the piston cause the piston to move to which initiates the power stroke (para. 8). Unlike the compression stroke, the hot gas does work on the piston during the power stroke. The force on the piston is transmitted by the piston rod to the crankshaft, where the linear motion of the piston is converted to angular motion of the crankshaft. Hall s article for NASA states that the work done on the piston is then used to turn the shaft (para. 8). Having produced the igniting spark, the electrical contact remains opened. During the power stroke, the volume occupied by the gases is increased because of the piston motion and no heat is transferred to the fuel/air mixture (para. 9). As the volume is increased because of the piston s motion, the pressure and temperature of the gas are decreased. Abigail Adams Critique Jordan Maki Prof. Meier History 6 October 20, 2017 Abigail Adams Book Critique In the novel, Abigail Adams: A Revolutionary American Woman, Charles Akers portrays the life of a strong, revolutionary woman named Abigail Adams. She was known as the first lady of the United States under John Adams and she played an indirect role in influencing the American Revolution. She is called one of the founders of the country for her revolutionary thinking and her being a rights activist. Abigail Adams faced many hardships throughout her life. She was the daughter of a minister and had two sisters and a brother. In the 1700 s, children did not have a high survival rate due to the amount of diseases and nothing to treat them with. Abigail Adams said in her old age that she was always sick (Akers 5). This reminds people how tough life was in the 1700 s and how easy it was to pass away from a mere cold. Abigail also did not have any education growing up. Women, in the colonial era, were not supposed to have an education and were supposed to watch the kids, cook, and clean. Readers of this book learn that many women back then were illiterate and were self taught, if they had any education. Abigail did find a love for literature due to her sister s spouse, Richard Cranch. He influenced her love for literature at a young age and she started to become more literate. In the poem, Marlowe expresses the idea that age has no influence upon love and a person s feelings. The shallow rivers, waterfalls, birds singing, and flowers all personify the Shepherd s feeling that age has nothing to do with love and his hopes of winning the younger girl s heart. The scene that is created is highly discernible as Spring, the time of year associated with love and light heartedness. The allusions to these things also demonstrates the Shepherd s hollow sense of hope. The Shepherd tries to lure the girl by offering her everything in the world. Throughout the millennia, this civilisation and its people have continued to develop the cultural practices such as sacred teachings, which consequently has influenced their art style. Therefore, in this essay I will explore and compared themes such as Confucianism, Taoism and even their written word and how those have influences art in China through the ages. The concept of Confucianism began over two thousand five hundred years ago, and it is largely defined by three key principles. That etiquette is integral to harmony, authority is to be respected and most importantly tradition and history is to be remembered and revered. All three of these principles are equally important and Confucians believe that these teachings are the best way to have a peaceful and uncorrupted society and the best way to carry yourself as a person. However, I claimed that reverence towards tradition was the most important principle because I have found that it is the most common theme related to Confucianism that appears in Chinese art. You can see this in Xie He s Six Principles of Painting written in 550c. • 39. The Reformation And The Theological Tenets Of The Reformation The view that salvation can be attained through faith alone was one largely responsible for the theological shift that was observed across Europe during the Reformation, and was the ideology that created the rift that still exists between the Catholic and Protestant church. Whilst the English Reformation is said to have begun with the Act of Supremacy and the break from Rome, Henry VIII s Church of England remained doctrinally conservative and did not accept the Protestant affirmation that salvation could be attained by faith alone. Indeed, it was not until Elizabeth s religious settlement that justification by faith was incorporated into the doctrine of the Church of England. However, this is not to say that it was not the key theological tenet of the English Reformation, just as it was the key doctrine across Europe, but rather that Henry VIII s Reformation may be viewed largely as a political rather than a theological one. In 1520, Luther wrote that, faith... unites the soul with Christ, as a bride united with her bridegroom . In this, Luther highlights the importance of establishing an intimate relationship between Christ and the believer. The faith that Luther describes is one that is more than simply realising that Christ s word is full of grace; it is a formed faith, as Aquinas would define, one where the believer actively assents to Christ s salvific love. Another dog I had got caught off Hwy 120 in a trap when she was only six months old. It so traumatized her that I had a hard time calming her down to get the trap off her little paw. So, you can understand why I do not care much for trapping or the people that do it. Moving on up the trail there is evidence of avalanches and the Limber pines are all wiped out. Some are bent over and still alive, because their roots are attached. Others are a splintered mess from the shock wave produced by an avalanche. This is an unbelievable force that can generate an air blast up to 200 miles per hour. Everything in its path gets wiped out and debris like trees and rock are carried for great distances. Standing in one of these avalanche paths in winter would mean sudden death with no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Upton Sinclair s The Jungle In 1906, American Writer, Upton Sinclair wrote the novel The Jungle to portray the harsh working conditions for immigrants working in the United states. The original purpose of the book was to describe the American meatpacking industry and the working conditions associated with it to promote socialism. Author Upton Sinclair Commented, after the books release I aimed at the public s heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach. Ironically enough the book promoted concern for the health violations and unsanitary working conditions in the early twentieth century. The book the Jungle contributed to the Meat Inspection Act and reform. Sinclair was a muckraker, a journalist who exposed corruption, and was hired to write about and expose the labor ... • 45. The Whaling Of Whaling Nations 1. What is the IWC? In 1946, whaling nations established the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling in order to prohibit the killing of certain endangered whale species, set quotas and minimum size for whales caught commercially and regulate the whaling seasons. This convention was not an environmental agreement, but a club of whaling nations to regulate the practice of catching whales. The International Whaling Commission, (IWC), was the decision making body in charge of the regime and was tasked with the duty of protecting this marine species. Unfortunately, not only was the IWC largely toothless in terms of enforcing their rules, many of their actions were actually counterproductive. The IWC would met in secret to haggle over quotas that were set so high more whales were being killed than before the convention and the total number of whales killed doubled between 1951 and 1962. Even worse, while the major whaling nations were members of the IWC, many developing countries refused to join or abide by its decisions and even went so far as to allow pirate whalers who sold their products to Japan to operate within their territories. Overall, the IWC was largely ineffective until the blue whale became endangered in the 1960 s. 2. What is land degradation neutrality? • 46. Catherine A. Lutz Yes, it s only Reservation Blues but I like it: On the Connection between Christian and Native Religions One of the most interesting aspects of the anthropological study of Catherine A. Lutz, entitled Unnatural Emotions, is that the author applies the same sort of intense self examination to her own project as an anthropologist amongst the Ifaluk as she does to the Ifaluk themselves. Every individual at some point in his or her own life has been confronted with the surprise, after all, that someone seems exactly like me. Or, conversely, one is shocked how another human animal, possessing roughly the same physical attributes of one s genus and species as one s self, could behave in such a horrible/wonderful fashion, totally unlike ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But beyond this initial emotional connection, the reader s sense of strangeness and estrangement of the community is again reborn by the tone of the narrative and the detailed though magical realist evocation of Native, Western reservation life. The seamless blend of Native American folklore and Catholicism is one of the oddest aspects of the novel to someone personally uninitiated and unfamiliar with Native religions, except on a superficial level. For instance, one of the novel s backup vocalists Checkers Warm Water develops a relationship with the reservation priest. It is difficult, once one accepts the level of oppression experienced by these Native American individuals, to fully understand why Christianity, the religion of Caucasians, would have any draw at all. Why doesn t Checkers simply love her own Native religion and her own Native people through the context of that tradition? Why a priest? The only answer is perhaps found in the idea that many of the Indian characters seek, through rock and roll and through Catholicism as well, the sort of individualistic _expression ... • 47. Contemporary Theories Of Subcultures A subculture is considered a group of dominant people or culture that has been defined in its norms, values, and interests, which are often inconsistent to those of large groups. (Bohm Vogel, 2011) Subcultures were created when a group of people that share the same beliefs or circumstances finds themselves cut off from society. (Bohm Vogel, 2011) These groups are distinct from those of the majority and are held by a group into a broader society. Most subcultures are recognized by their age of its members, or by race, ethnicity, class, gender, and their qualities that may be aesthetic, religious, occupational, political, and sexual or a combination of these factors. However, people create subcultures as a way to feel accepted while also signifying that they are different from other groups. The subculture theory focuses on consistent distinctiveness, identity, commitment, and autonomy. The first subculture group I would like to recognize is the police they are law enforcement officers with specific types of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. I place them in the subculture category because of they spend their time dealing with crime; therefore they tend to be judgmental towards members of the public viewing them as untrustworthy and potentially hostile; therefore, the public view the police as being unreliable and abusive as well. The police depend on their cohorts to back them up, and mostly teamwork to apprehend criminals; therefore, it creates a dynamic of police ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
