The Five Core Competencies In The Healthcare System
The five core competencies identified by IOM and the sixth added by QSEN, safety, are believed to be necessary to improve both quality and safety of
the healthcare system within which nurses work (Multimethod teaching). The six core competencies outlined are patient–centered care, teamwork and
collaboration, evidence–based practice, quality improvement, informatics, and safety (Diffusing Qsen). While all competencies are significant to the
healthcare system, patient centered care is vital to positive patient outcomes and focuses on the patient's perspective within the healthcare system.
Patient–Centered Care Patient–centered care encompasses ideas, skills, and attitudes that promote greater patient empowerment, responsibility, and
prioritizing patients' needs and experience of healthcare in influencing how care is delivered (Lorig, 2012). Patient–centered care focuses on
individualizing care to meet the health care needs of individual patients but also encourages patient's to be active participants in their own care.
Important aspects of patient–centered care that focuses on the patient's experience include cultural competency, involvement, and continuity of care.
Cultural Care The United States is a country that is often referred to as a melting pot because it has a mixture of people of all different ages, religions,
and cultures. With such a wide variety of people from different backgrounds, it seems essential that cultural awareness and sensitivity is incorporated

Family Centered Care Model
Patient and family centered care is a model of care where the patients' needs and preferences are taken into consideration when developing a plan of
care. The patient, and frequently the family, are included in the decision making process. Education is the key. Well informed patients make better
choices about the delivery of their care. In larger markets consumers have more choices about where they go to receive healthcare. "Patients can request
that health care facilities provide an institutional report card that describes such indices as outcomes of patient care for medical conditions and surgical
interventions, medical error rates, nosocomial infection rates, RN to patient staffing ratios, availability of support personnel, morbidity ... Show more

When one has received the call to be a caregiver they have been thrust into the role of ministering to others. As a nurse leader, it is not only the patients
and families you minister to, but the caregivers you support. Bolman & Deal's Leading with Soul: An Uncommon Journey of Spirit teaches
leaders the importance of the gifts of leadership; showing love, giving power over, allowing authorship by others and finding significance in the
work that is done. Showing love to caregivers is the ability to find that gift that each individual brings and recognizing it. Showing compassion to
each caregiver and letting them know they are cared about energizes caregivers and makes them feel appreciated. When caregivers feel appreciated
there is more satisfaction in what they do. It increases enthusiasm in individuals and decreases negativity that can be so detrimental to the team.
Giving power to one's caregivers is permitting them to make decisions. By doing so it allows them to feel liberated and gives them a sense of
control over their own destination. Allowing others to develop a course of action to meet a need is authorship. It can increase confidence in others
and inspire nurses to take the lead and feel good about what they are doing. Significance is the understanding of what is the value in the task or
project. When a leader is able to convey the importance of what is being asked there is a better chance of enthusiasm and engagement on the part

Family Centered Care : A Collaboration Among Patients,...
Introduction
Family–centered care is a collaboration among patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other professionals for the planning, delivery, and evaluation
of health care. Family–centered care can improve patient and family outcomes, increase patient and family satisfaction, build on child and family
strengths, decrease health care costs, and lead to more effective use of health care resources. Family presence during health care procedures decreases
anxiety for the child and the parents. "Research indicates that when parents are prepared, they do not prolong the procedure or make the provider more
anxious (Harrison, 2009)"
Pediatric disease process description and treatment
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. The appendix is a 3 1/2–inch–long tube of tissue that extends from the large intestine, which is
located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. Appendicitis is a medical emergency and requires surgery to remove the appendix. If left untreated,
an inflamed appendix will burst, or perforate, "leaking out a thick liquid containing bacteria, tissue cells, and dead white blood cells into the abdominal
cavity (Everyday health, 2006)". This can lead to peritonitis, an inflammation of the abdominal cavity lining (peritoneum) that can cause death unless it
is treated quickly with strong antibiotics. According to the Mayo Clinic (2014), "Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes blocked, often by
stool, a foreign body, or cancer." Blockage may

Family Centered Care : A Belief That The Health Care Staff...
Family centered care is a belief that the health care staff and the family should work together in order to meet the needs of the patient. By working
together, the patient receives the best care while respecting the choices of the family. Nurses must provide dignity and respect by listening to values,
beliefs, and cultural backgrounds to provide the best care plan (St Jude Children's Research Hospital, n.d.). Nurses must communicate unbiased,
accurate information to the patient and their family in order to facilitate decision making. Nurses need to encourage and support the family's decisions.
We must recognize that each family is unique. We must acknowledge that emotional, developmental, and social support are important components of a
patient's health care. There are several approaches to family nursing to take into consideration. These are: Family as Context, Family as Client,
Family as System, and Family as Component of Society (Kaakinen, Coehlo, Steele, Tabacco, & Hanson, 2015). In this paper, I will explain each of
these approaches and give a personal example of patients and families I have experienced these approaches with.
Family as Context provides a traditional approach to family nursing where the patient is the focus of care and the family serves as a context
(Kaakinen et al., 2015). I have a patient that has had cerebral palsy since infancy. She is unable to walk or talk and solely depends on her family for
all of her care. She lives at home with her mother

A new clinical practice guideline, developed by the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO), provides direction for nurses and other
healthcare providers to shift from fee for service to value–based healthcare by placing the person and their family at the heart of every decision. The
purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis and summary of the person and family centered care clinical practice guideline based on the AGREE
II international assessment tool. The Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation (AGREE) Instrument is a tool that was developed to assess
the rigor of development and transparency of clinical practice guidelines (AGREE, n.d.). Use of the AGREE tool, now improved to AGREE II, allows
guideline users to have confidence in a guideline's recommendations. The AGREE II instrument is categorized into 6 quality domains followed by an
overall assessment and whether the appraiser would recommend the guideline. Domain 1. Scope and Purpose The overall objective of the person and
family centered guideline is for healthcare providers to enhance their partnerships with individuals accessing care thereby creating better patient
outcomes and patient experiences (Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario, 2015). By advocating for the use of evidence–based best practices
associated with person and family centered care, nurses and healthcare providers can gain the knowledge required to establish therapeutic relationships

The And Family Centered Care
Introduction The patient– and family–centered care model recognizes the patient and family relationship as an inseparable entity.1 Encouraging
unrestrictive family presence through open visitation practices can ensure critical care patients and their families are provided with the opportunity to
maintain communication, actively participate in the decision–making process, and assist with the provision of care.1 Despite professional
organizations for critical care nursing advocating for unrestrictive family presence, many critical care units have not adopted an open visitation policy.
2,3 According to the American Association of Critical–Care Nurses, approximately 70% of adult critical care units restrict family visitation.2 In
Canada the percentage of critical care units that have adopted an open visitation policy is not formally recorded, however, the Canadian Association
of Critical Nurses recognizes that open visitation is not a standardized practice across the country.3 Nurses play a large role in determining visitation
practices. The culture of the critical care unit, negative perceptions of family presence, gaps in knowledge about the beneficial effects of open
visitation, and the lack of a formal policy influences the decision–making processes to allow unrestrictive family presence.4 In effort to eliminate bias
in the decision–making process, nurses need to understand the implications of their perceptions, the benefits of open visitation, and the advantages and

Victor Hugo PATIENT
–CENTERED CARE: AN IDEA WHOSE TIME HAS COME O rganizing the delivery of health care around the needs of the
patient may seem like a simple and obvious approach. In a system as complex as health care, however, little is simple. In fact, thirty years ago when
the idea of "patient–centered care" first emerged as a return to the holistic roots of health care, it was swiftly dismissed by all but the most
philosophically progressive providers as trivial, superficial, or unrealistic. Its defining characteristics of partnering with patients and families, of
welcoming―even encouraging―their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, many organizations continue to struggle with what "it" is. This ambiguity ultimately leaves many with vague or muddled expectations
for what constitutes patient–centered care. Is it a surprise, then, that many leaders report feeling bewildered at how to go about becoming more
patient–centered? Or that others, convinced that their approach is indeed a patient–centered one, are surprised to find data reflecting patient and/or
staff discontent? In the broadest terms, patient–centered care is care organized around the patient. It is a model in which providers partner with
patients and families to identify and satisfy the full range of patient needs and preferences. Not to be overlooked in defining patient–centered care is its
concurrent focus on staff. To succeed, a patient–centered approach must also address the staff experience, as staff's ability and inclination to
effectively care for patients is unquestionably compromised if they do not feel cared for themselves. Although patients may not always be able to
accurately assess the clinical quality of their care, or whether safety processes are in place, patient safety and high clinical quality are fundamental to a
patient–centered approach. Patient–centered care does not replace excellent medicine―it both complements clinical excellence and contributes to it
through effective partnerships and communication. A wealth of resources exists to guide organizations in addressing clinical

1.Define patient / family centered care from your professional perspective.
Patient and family centered care occurs by involving the patient and their family in the care being delivered. The care being delivered should match
the patient and family's cultural beliefs and preferences. The patient and family will be explained procedures and able to ask any questions or voice
concerns throughout the delivery of care. They will also have a voice in all health care decisions and will be encouraged to participate in the care. For
instance, if the health care team is doing team rounds, the patient and family should be encouraged to join the rounds for that patient. As nurses, we are

Patient and family centered care should occur in each step of the delivery of health care. The patient and family should be included in all of the
decision making in the delivery of health care. They should be explained procedures thoroughly and they should also be involved in the evaluation of
the care. Spruce (2015) mentioned the importance of health literacy among patients in regards to patient centered care (p. 35). This is beneficial
because if the patient is able to understand the process of their illness, then they will be better able to understand the treatments available and what they
wish to do in their situation. This is a point of patient centered care that I did not mention in my definition. However, I feel that it is a very critical step
in the process of patient centered care.

Out of the 101 articles that were identified by the researchers were 25 distinct frameworks and models that dealt with patient–centered care. The
authors wanted to demonstrate the effectiveness of application of each of the 25 models or a combination of them. The three tenants that were
envisaged by the Constand and others were health promotion, partnership and communication. The different frameworks were weighed and tested
against each other in order to try and develop one framework or identify a single framework that would be generically applied in patient–centered care.
The researchers found no evidence that some models were better than others. In this regard, they recommended that nursing staff be on the frontline in
appraising the needs of their patients and consequently choose the framework that best works to meet those needs. The researchers further advised that
nurses should be confident that either model can achieve all or any of the three tenants espoused in patient–centered care provision. The most widely
discussed component of patient–centeredness was communication and it yielded much of the empirical data that was used in making these
conclusions. Article 2 Heidenreich (2013) evaluates the effectiveness of patient–centered care. He considers the holistic patient–centered care concept
and its main metric, patient satisfaction in his article. Traditionally, there was

Talllon et al. conducted a study to see if there is an alternative health care model more effective than family–centered care. The paper criticized
family–centered care and its extreme focus on attachment there and its inability to look at other relevant research theories. The alternative model
focused on the physical and emotional influences that parents and family have on their children's' health. This alternative model would combine
knowledge from many disciplines to create optimal care from nurses. Nurses would be able to enhance care and health care outcomes of children and
their families. They created a bioecological model of health care that was not proven to be more effective. Yet, evidence from community nursing
shows that there is a great possibility that it will be more effective. The authors are confident in this alternative, nursing enhanced approach of

these principles, the health professional can involve the patient's family in their care, empower them with knowledge and enrich their in–hospital

Family Centered Care At The Hospital
During a patients' stay in the hospital the most important care given is to encourage family centered care. Last year, my younger sister had
recurring strep throat. Which lead to the decision to get her tonsils removed. My sister is terrified of needles and the idea of a hospital makes her
jump out of her skin; she can be a horrible patient. While being admitted the nurse was very kind and patient. Her nurse needed to get an IV into her
arm; while doing this the nurse explained everything that she needed to do and even distracted my sister by creating conversation with her. The nurse
also noticed how nervous she was and gave her a lilac smelling stick. At the time the hospital was conducting an experiment to see if the stick decreased

From being admitted, all the way to recovery, the nurses really made the experience less frightening. The staff focused on having my Mom and I
present before and after her procedure. As a student, I observed the way the nurses were acting towards my sister. The nurses exhibited the proper way
I should be to my patients and to the patient's family: respect, patience and a calm environment to help promote healing. Having the family at the
patient's bedside and teaching family how to care for their loved one, is the most important step in a patient's recovery.
The main component of family centered care is to ensure a patient, their family and health care professionals are brought together to aid in the
healing and recovery of the patient (Resources, 2016). This is particularly important in the pediatric population. The family is a huge part in a child's
healing and comfort. A hospital can be overwhelming for a child so in turn the child will want to be surrounded by family, this will help to ensure
quicker recovery and help comfort their anxiety. Nurses need to attempt to involve the child's family as much as possible, ultimately the child's stay
becomes comfortable and helps to relieve any anxieties the child would be feeling. Sometimes a simple act of allowing the child to try on their
stethoscope and listen to their parent's heartbeats, will create a sense of trust and relieve the child's nerves.

The Concept Of Patient And Family Centered Care
The concept of patient and family–centered care has been catapulted to the forefront of the health care system due to the demand of high–quality
medical care (Schwarzkopf et al, 2013). Family–centered care identifies that patients exist within a wider social networking of family members and
friends (Huffiness et al., 2013). In 2001, the Institute of Medicine published its seminal report, Crossing the Quality Chasm, which depicted the
involvement and support of family and friends as a dimension of patient–centeredness (Institute of Medicine, 2001). Patients in the intensive care unit
(ICU) often do not have decision–making capabilities or are unable to communicate with the health care team due to the severity of illness or the effects
of treatment. Family members often assume responsibility and act as surrogate decision makers. The assessment of family satisfaction is therefore
utilized in place of patient satisfaction, leading to the shift in focus to family–centered care (Roberti & Fitzpatrick, 2010). Studies have shown that
family members of patients in the ICU expressed low levels of satisfaction with communication and emotional support. Clear communication with
family of the critically ill was found to be essential for accurate assessment of their needs. It serves as an integral part of meeting the needs of family
members of ICU patients (Davidson, et al., 2007). Great emphasis should therefore be placed on improving communication between members of the

Family Centered Care : A Concept Analysis Essay
Family–Centered Care in Nursing:
A Concept Analysis

(intro)
"Family–centered care" is a term heard often in healthcare settings and in nursing practice. Family–centered care has been recognized as being an
integral part to patient health, satisfaction and health care quality (Kuo, et al, 2012). Family–centered care is implemented with the goal to increase
partnerships between, families, patients and providers; and has been prioritized as a core–concept of quality healthcare (Gallo, Hill, Hoagwood & Olin,
2016) Many professionals, however, would be hard–pressed to state what the term "family–centered care" actually means and how it applies to nursing
practice. They would be at a loss for how to implement family–centered care and what is absolutely necessary to have in order for family–centered care
to be successful. Advanced practice nurses are faced with the challenge of adhering to family–centered care in their practice. Illness, both chronic and
acute, and health does not just affect the patient involved in care. Illness and health affect the patient, their children, their spouses, their parents, their
brothers, their sisters, their grandparents and anyone else involved in their life. Research by Davidson (2009) supports the idea that the perceived
effectiveness of communication between healthcare providers and the patient's family is related to the overall satisfaction of care. Advance

Engagement Since this case is happening in the emergency room is it necessary to inform the family that it is plausible that the hospital social

Consequently specific skills, that can be used appropriately for one time visits in the emergency room, to engage Maci and her family during the
assessment and intervention are many, such as: basic listening skills, family centered approach, solution focused brief therapy, and strengths based
perspective. Listening skills supported as evidence based to assist social workers in building rapport are summarizing, reflective listening, active
listening, supporting the client in emotional labeling, paraphrasing, and mirroring, which is a method that reiterates the last word or phrase from the
client and forms it into a question (Hendricks & McKean, 2010). Therefore, active listening is when the professional focuses on verbal and non–verbal

Family Centered Care During The Postpartum Setting
Family Centered Care in the Postpartum Setting Although an admission into a facility with the purpose of bringing new life into the world is a
joyous time for a family; any visit to a hospital setting may still evoke stress and anxiety for both for the family and the patient. Utilizing family
centred care, this stress and anxiety can be decreased by collaborating and ensuring that the patients' needs are met and satisfied (Neal et al., 2007).
Family centered care recognizes that a patient is not just a stagnant individual on the hospital bed, but an active member of the health care team.
Patients are experts of their own lives, and family centered care emphasizes this concept. This scholarly paper will describe the clinical scenario;
including an overview of the patients' current and past health history. I will elucidate the meaning of family centred care, four key concepts and its
specific application to my clinical scenario. Finally, this paper will include a reflection about my thoughts and feelings regarding the scenario. Through
the process of writing this scholarly paper my goal was to further expand my knowledge about family centered care. During theory class, we were
taught the fundamental basics about family centered care, however having the opportunity to apply and analyze this concept into a real clinical
scenario further illustrates the content we learned. When a woman is admitted to deliver her baby in the hospital, the majority of focus is on that woman,

Patient/Family Centered Care: Collaborative Concepts Of...
Person: patients, family, or community who need assistant in health concern
Environment: physical surrounding, psychological influences, food and medication, and cultural background and belief of the person. Environment
can affect the person's health, in both negative and positive ways.
Health: a state of well–being of a person, can be in a normal or impaired state
Nursing: nursing practice required to assist the person to recover, or to maintain the well–being state of health
Over the course of my nursing career, the two concepts of nursing that relevant to my own practice are patient/ family–centered care (PFCC) and
collaborative concepts. The concept of PFCC lies on my personal belief is that patients and/or families should be the ones who make decisions
regarding their health. PFCC is an approach that patients and their families are considered as parts of the components of healthcare decision making
and delivery processes (Hughes, 2011). It is important that patients are provided necessary information when making their health care decisions. ...

Boykin (2014) explained that a communication involves a two–way process, sending and receiving the message; an effective communication occurs
when health care providers and patients exchange information in a meaningful way so that the message is understood and patients are able to actively
participate in their care. I always keep in mind that communication is an important part of PFCC. Every shift, I explain the plan of care to my patients
using terms that they and their families can easily understand and encourage them to ask questions. I also actively listen to patients about concerns,
include these concerns, and adjust their care plans

Patient Family Centered Care
In this article, Working Together to improve the Patient Experience, author Richard Billingsley(2014) explains how working together amongst
providers, the patients, and the patient's family improves the patient experience, thus markedly heightening the quality of care. In this article, he also
shares how other organizations have successfully adopted a model to facilitate cultural change within their facilities. This cultural model is referred to
as patient family centered care (PFCC), and while it is not a new concept, it's emphasis has gained popularity as insurance companies adjust the criteria
that encompasses what constitutes as high quality care. Once revered by the volume of care provided, insurance companies now emphasize value of
the care provided. In order to remain successful in a market such as this, healthcare institutions must adopt a new culture where the patient experience is
central to the care provided. This culture needs to envelope a new mindset where the patient, and patient family are considered equal, active participants
in their care. The process of reformulating the culture within an organization is similar to that of the nursing process, commonly referred to as the
acronym ADPIE. The assessment begins when the organization determines the factors that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Facilities that have successfully implemented PFCC into practice have seen reduced call light volume, fewer patient falls, and reduced incidence of
subsequent hospital readmissions post discharge. The implementation of bedside shift reporting, purposeful hourly rounding, expanded visiting hours,
as well as the use of communication white boards are various ways organizations have successfully facilitated this adoption of a new culture. The
adoption of a new culture takes time, but with continued effort amongst all pillars of the healthcare team, we all reap the fruits of our labor of

Patient And Family Centered Care: A Case Study
A personal interview was conducted with a respiratory therapist from Rapid City Regional Hospital regarding patient and family centered care and
leadership. The views that the respiratory therapist had in regards to the subject were very similar to my own views. The respiratory therapist stated
that patient and family centered care involves encouraging the patient and family to become involved with the patient's care and allowing them to
participate in decision–making that best correlates with the patient's situation (M. Mackey, personal communication, November 18, 2016). Every
patient who presents to the hospital has different values and beliefs of some form; therefore, health care professionals need to be able to recognize the

Family Centered Care Approach
"Family centered care is the delivery of safe, satisfying, high–quality health care that focuses on and adapts to the physical and psychosocial needs of
the family. It is a cooperative effort between the family and their caregivers and recognizes and uses the strengths and integrity of the family"
(Hammerstrand & Loewen, 2013, p. 9). According to Kuo et al. (2012), family centered care has surpassed the basic client/health care provider
relationship, FCC encompasses the needs of the entire family as an entity. Benefits that have been noted include knowledge increase from the patient's
perspective, better self–care, and self–esteem of the caregivers, which lead to better outcomes for the child involved (Kuo et al., 2012). Harrison
(2010) mentions that families want a partnership based relationship with health professionals, but the nurses are still finding it difficult to implement
the approach in practice. Research has been done regarding FCC, but outcomes and delivery of FCC remain underdeveloped. All levels of
healthcare delivery should be examined when researching FCC, but tertiary care seems to be the main level of care studied. More research needs to
be done on the effects of FCC in all areas of healthcare (Harrison, 2010). FCC can be further broken down into eight core concepts, I will discuss four.
Dignity and respect is used to incorporate all aspects of the family, their values, beliefs, cultural backgrounds and knowledge. As health

Patient/family–Centered Care and Collaboration: My Nursing Practice Concepts I am a foreign born woman from Thailand and married to an
American husband. We have two children, a twelve–year–old daughter and a ten–year–old son. We move here eight years ago from Bangkok, Thailand.
Nursing is my second career after being an environmental engineer, a sale executive, and a stay–at–home mom. I went back school after my son went
school. I earned Advance Degree in Nursing from Valencia College. After graduated, I started my nursing career at Florida Hospital Orlando. Over
a year after working on my first unit, I enrolled in a BSN program and received my BSN from University of Central Florida in May 2015. My first unit,
where I started working a new graduate nurse (GN), was a multi–system progressive care unit. I have had opportunities to learn about many diseases
from all body systems. I also had the opportunities to take care of many wounds. I found that wound care is very interesting field. Most of my novice
on this unit I learnt about time and task management and many nursing skills. I also have the opportunity to work for Florida Hospital at another
campus. Although it is the multi–system PCU as the same as my first unit, the population of patients are different. Majority of patients are geriatric
patients with high acuity level and comorbidities. I found that I enjoy working with them. They have stories to share and teach us as we are part of
their family. In turn I enjoy

Patient And Family Centered Care Essay
Patient and family centered care is a vital component in the delivery of health care. It is not only nurses who influence the delivery of patient and
family centered care; in fact, there is a wide range of health care disciplines that are involved in the process. Some of these disciplines include
physicians, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, pharmacy, and case managers. Two vital attributes that contribute to
patient and family centered care among the health care team are collaboration and leadership. Each member of the health care profession plays an
equal role in providing patient and family centered care to patients during their hospitalization or visit to a health care setting. This paper will seek to
further identify the meaning of patient and family centered care, examine the views of a respiratory therapist on the issue, and identify different
leadership techniques that allow for appropriate collaboration among the interprofessional team. Patient & Family Centered Care Student Perspective
From the student perspective, there are many things that become noticed during the two and a half years of nursing school. One of the issues that
come to mind after many lectures, clinical experiences, and assignments is patient and family centered care. However, to me, I do not believe there is a
right or wrong definition of the matter. However, all definitions should have one thing in common, that the patient and family are involved in the care

Family Centered Care
Family centred care mainly focus on involving family by partnership and collaboration with health care team for the well being of sick family
member or child (Kuo, et al., 2012). In pediatric settings families play an important key role with nursing and other medical staff. It is widely excepted
concept in most health care facilities (Kuo, et al., 2012). First time American Academy of Paediatric published a policy statement on family centred

Patient Centered Care At Florence Nightingale
Patient Centered Care Florence Nightingale paved the way for patient centered care in nursing. She realized that patients should be treated with dignity,
respect and treatments that are in the best health interest of the patient. The Institute of Medicine defines patient–centered care (PCC) as "care that is
respectful of and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs and values," ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions. (Finkelstein,
2012) Being hospitalized can be a stressful time for many patients and their families. Nurses spend more time with patients than any other healthcare
team member. In patient centered care, nurses provide the knowledge, resources, and support that each client needs to be involved in informed
decision–making processes, assume important aspects of total self–care (if capable), and change behaviors to promote health and a better quality of life
(Hood, 2015). The overall health outcome of patients revolves around patient centered care. Establishing a healthy nurse–patient relationship is key to
patient centered care.
Nursing role in patient centered care Nurse's use holistic care or total patient care to consider the physical, emotional, spiritual, personal preference,
family situation, cultural and religious traditions, and specify lifestyle needs. It is of the utmost importance to preserve the clients dignity and respect
while monitoring how the patient responds to the illness and assessing their ability to perform

As per Indian beliefs that suffering is a direct result of "karma "from past and present life. Latin American thinks that injectable medicines are more
powerful than oral administration. Knowledge of all these cultural views of different ethnic group helps to build good therapeutic relationship and
develop effective care plan (Adult mededucation, 2006). One of the stumbling block in providing care to the patient of different culture is language
because there are so many people who are unable to speak primary language used in the health care setting. So, its health personnel responsibility to

Four Principles Of Family Centered Care In Pediatric Nursing
4 Principles of Family Centered Care in Pediatric Nursing
Family centered care (FCC) is an effective framework that many nurse practitioners have adopted in the United States. [1] As early as 1966,
researchers such as Claire Fagin PhD. have called for a transformation in the role that pediatric nurse practitioners (PNPs) play in promoting bonding
between newborns and their mothers. Today, nurse practitioners have answered this call by implementingfamily centered care, which blends clinical
practice, caregiving, family principles in the health care environment. Practitioners who implement FCC frameworks promote professional
accountability for the welfare of children, as well as the physical, emotional and psychological well–being of newborns.
An brief overview of the philosophy embraced by FCC nurse practitioners is outlined in the following four sections.
Principle 1: Open Communication
Family centered care revolves around open, objective, and unbiased information sharing. [2] In the academic setting, educators teach FCC principle
during Family Centered Rounds (FCRs). FCRs preparing new nurses to apply strategic family centered principles, for example in such as emergency
room settings where the discipline calls for measures such as maintaining patient flow, making sure the families stay together, and coordinating required
services. Additionally, nurse practitioners should work to overcome barriers to treatment such as poor communication.
Principle 2: Collaboration

Patient Centered Care Analysis
Definition Patient–centered care in the profession of nursing allows patients and families to be seen as a unique individual. Patient–centered care is
based on respecting and understanding the values, preferences, and the needs of patients. The overall goal for patient–centered care is to encourage
patients to become actively involved in self–care and the decision–making process to formulate individualized care plans (McCance, McCormack, &
Dewing, 2011). There are seven dimensions of patient–centered care that help provide patient–centered care to all patients, however, only five
dimensions are going to be discussed. The five dimensions include (1) respect for the patients' values, preferences, and expressed needs, (2)
coordination and integration... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When information is communicated and education is provided, the delivery of the information and education depends on the patients' preferences.
Incorporating the patients' preferences in all aspects of care and how information is delivered, enables health care members to ensure patients comes
first. In addition, it enables healthcare members to deliver high–quality care and to actively listen to all patients (Rinchen, 2010). The fourth dimension
of patient–centered care, physical comfort, enables nurses and other members to keep patients comfortable physically and emotionally. The physical
aspect of patient–centered care is for nurses keep patients free from pain at all times. To keep patients free from pain, it is best for nurses to follow a
personalized care plan since, not all patients tolerate pain the same or are the same. Each patient is a unique individual and should be treated as such

Family Centered Care Research Paper
Family–centered care is essential in pediatric nursing. As the community nurses, they have the responsibilities to consider family as a unit instead of a
child because the health problems of children may be arised from their parents. Family–centered care helps foster a good relationship within a family
and implement related interventions by understanding the needs of a family. A strong partnership between nurses and families ensures to provide
high–quality health care. Futhermore, there are benefits if we use family–centered care instead of patient–centered care when we address the health
problems of children. With family–centered care, we can reduce emotional distress during hospitalization and post–hospital period and boost parents

Nurses interact with families in a variety of community–based and clinical settings. The family nursing process is the same, regardless of the setting or
whether the focus is on the family as a whole or on an individual in that family (Crisp & Taylor 2005). In the case of a 3 year old girl just diagnosed
with leukaemia, it is important for a nurse to critically analyse the situation and address any immediate concerns. The nurse must address any
professional issues that may arise and any potential impacts of hospitalisation that may affect the child and the family. Also provide support and
education to reassure and comfort them. The primary concern for paediatric nurses is the welfare of the child and the family (Crisp & Taylor 2005)....

In this situation the father has the right to know about his daughter's condition, so it is important for the nurse to discuss with the wife her reasons
for not wanting him to know and try to encourage her to tell him, as his daughter will need his support. Families of a child diagnosed with
leukaemia will find out that it will affect not only the child, but will change forever the lives of the parents, siblings, and relatives (Jennifer Lynn
Stroud Foundation). According to the Jennifer Lynn Stroud Foundation, leukaemia treatments are one of the most expensive and prolonged
treatments for children. Often chemotherapy treatments are not successful the first time so it may be necessary to plan for a second round of
treatment and any other required treatments that may be necessary. Parents should have their health insurance policy reviewed by the hospitals
financial department to make known any costs that are or are not covered and what out of pocket expenses they will need to plan for. The age
related concerns for preschoolers are physical and bodily harm. At this age they are able to understand the seriousness of their illness as being sick.
They will believe their being sick is the cause of a specific action and they need to be reassured that they did nothing to cause them to be sick. The need
for honest and clear communication is import to reduce the child's fears (Jennifer Lynn Stroud Foundation). Hockenberry and Wilson

The Impact of Patient–Centered Care on Quality of Patient Care
Rachel Stoller, RN
Robert Morris University What would happen if patients were able to create their own healthcare experience? What would it look like? How would
they benefit? I plan to discuss these hypotheticals through research regarding Patient–Centered Care. After all, studies and surveys performed by the
Institute of Medicine and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, read that engaged patients in any health care setting, have better perceived health
outcomes, thus higher actual quality patient outcomes.
Relating to the above, I believe that engaged learners have a better understanding of the material and thus more effective practice outcomes. Because of
this belief, I would use informal lecture coupled with a series of patient narratives and class discussions regarding the patient–centeredness of
care–team and patient interactions. In teams, we would discuss patient outcomes, care team involvement and behaviors, provider prompts, patient
prompts, professional responsibility, what was and was not patient–centered, barriers to care and areas of opportunity to meet patient needs. After
discussion, those learning would be responsible to research an assigned condition and to create a patient centered experience for either a primary care
or acute interaction.

Strategies and Resources that can help in giving an advance practice of patients and family centered care are composed of these three areas: First, staff
should be educated in details about patient and family–centered care. Second, other staff in the hospital should also educate for the awareness and
understanding about patient care. Third, include leadership in making the infrastructure to support and develop patient – and – family centered care
(Abraham, et. al., 2012).

The Five Core Competencies In Healthcare

  • 1. The Five Core Competencies In The Healthcare System The five core competencies identified by IOM and the sixth added by QSEN, safety, are believed to be necessary to improve both quality and safety of the healthcare system within which nurses work (Multimethod teaching). The six core competencies outlined are patient–centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence–based practice, quality improvement, informatics, and safety (Diffusing Qsen). While all competencies are significant to the healthcare system, patient centered care is vital to positive patient outcomes and focuses on the patient's perspective within the healthcare system. Patient–Centered Care Patient–centered care encompasses ideas, skills, and attitudes that promote greater patient empowerment, responsibility, and prioritizing patients' needs and experience of healthcare in influencing how care is delivered (Lorig, 2012). Patient–centered care focuses on individualizing care to meet the health care needs of individual patients but also encourages patient's to be active participants in their own care. Important aspects of patient–centered care that focuses on the patient's experience include cultural competency, involvement, and continuity of care. Cultural Care The United States is a country that is often referred to as a melting pot because it has a mixture of people of all different ages, religions, and cultures. With such a wide variety of people from different backgrounds, it seems essential that cultural awareness and sensitivity is incorporated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Family Centered Care Model Patient and family centered care is a model of care where the patients' needs and preferences are taken into consideration when developing a plan of care. The patient, and frequently the family, are included in the decision making process. Education is the key. Well informed patients make better choices about the delivery of their care. In larger markets consumers have more choices about where they go to receive healthcare. "Patients can request that health care facilities provide an institutional report card that describes such indices as outcomes of patient care for medical conditions and surgical interventions, medical error rates, nosocomial infection rates, RN to patient staffing ratios, availability of support personnel, morbidity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When one has received the call to be a caregiver they have been thrust into the role of ministering to others. As a nurse leader, it is not only the patients and families you minister to, but the caregivers you support. Bolman & Deal's Leading with Soul: An Uncommon Journey of Spirit teaches leaders the importance of the gifts of leadership; showing love, giving power over, allowing authorship by others and finding significance in the work that is done. Showing love to caregivers is the ability to find that gift that each individual brings and recognizing it. Showing compassion to each caregiver and letting them know they are cared about energizes caregivers and makes them feel appreciated. When caregivers feel appreciated there is more satisfaction in what they do. It increases enthusiasm in individuals and decreases negativity that can be so detrimental to the team. Giving power to one's caregivers is permitting them to make decisions. By doing so it allows them to feel liberated and gives them a sense of control over their own destination. Allowing others to develop a course of action to meet a need is authorship. It can increase confidence in others and inspire nurses to take the lead and feel good about what they are doing. Significance is the understanding of what is the value in the task or project. When a leader is able to convey the importance of what is being asked there is a better chance of enthusiasm and engagement on the part ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Family Centered Care Methodology And Practice Summary 1.Based on the story you wrote for the discussion analyze how your microsystems does and does not provide patient and family centered care. The story I wrote was not about the organization I work for, it was regarding an entity in our community that exemplifies patient and family centered care from which our facility could learn a lesson. Our organization has the stated goal of patient and family centered care as a vision, however, there are multiple "top down" planned change strategies and we often lose our way. The facility has invested large sums of money on consultants with minimal success in moving patient satisfaction scores. • 4. Family Centered Care : A Collaboration Among Patients,... Introduction Family–centered care is a collaboration among patients, families, physicians, nurses, and other professionals for the planning, delivery, and evaluation of health care. Family–centered care can improve patient and family outcomes, increase patient and family satisfaction, build on child and family strengths, decrease health care costs, and lead to more effective use of health care resources. Family presence during health care procedures decreases anxiety for the child and the parents. "Research indicates that when parents are prepared, they do not prolong the procedure or make the provider more anxious (Harrison, 2009)" Pediatric disease process description and treatment Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. The appendix is a 3 1/2–inch–long tube of tissue that extends from the large intestine, which is located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. Appendicitis is a medical emergency and requires surgery to remove the appendix. If left untreated, an inflamed appendix will burst, or perforate, "leaking out a thick liquid containing bacteria, tissue cells, and dead white blood cells into the abdominal cavity (Everyday health, 2006)". This can lead to peritonitis, an inflammation of the abdominal cavity lining (peritoneum) that can cause death unless it is treated quickly with strong antibiotics. According to the Mayo Clinic (2014), "Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes blocked, often by stool, a foreign body, or cancer." Blockage may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Family Centered Care : A Belief That The Health Care Staff... Family centered care is a belief that the health care staff and the family should work together in order to meet the needs of the patient. By working together, the patient receives the best care while respecting the choices of the family. Nurses must provide dignity and respect by listening to values, beliefs, and cultural backgrounds to provide the best care plan (St Jude Children's Research Hospital, n.d.). Nurses must communicate unbiased, accurate information to the patient and their family in order to facilitate decision making. Nurses need to encourage and support the family's decisions. We must recognize that each family is unique. We must acknowledge that emotional, developmental, and social support are important components of a patient's health care. There are several approaches to family nursing to take into consideration. These are: Family as Context, Family as Client, Family as System, and Family as Component of Society (Kaakinen, Coehlo, Steele, Tabacco, & Hanson, 2015). In this paper, I will explain each of these approaches and give a personal example of patients and families I have experienced these approaches with. Family as Context provides a traditional approach to family nursing where the patient is the focus of care and the family serves as a context (Kaakinen et al., 2015). I have a patient that has had cerebral palsy since infancy. She is unable to walk or talk and solely depends on her family for all of her care. She lives at home with her mother ... • 6. Evaluation Of The Person And Family Centered Care Clinical... A new clinical practice guideline, developed by the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO), provides direction for nurses and other healthcare providers to shift from fee for service to value–based healthcare by placing the person and their family at the heart of every decision. The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis and summary of the person and family centered care clinical practice guideline based on the AGREE II international assessment tool. The Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation (AGREE) Instrument is a tool that was developed to assess the rigor of development and transparency of clinical practice guidelines (AGREE, n.d.). Use of the AGREE tool, now improved to AGREE II, allows guideline users to have confidence in a guideline's recommendations. The AGREE II instrument is categorized into 6 quality domains followed by an overall assessment and whether the appraiser would recommend the guideline. Domain 1. Scope and Purpose The overall objective of the person and family centered guideline is for healthcare providers to enhance their partnerships with individuals accessing care thereby creating better patient outcomes and patient experiences (Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario, 2015). By advocating for the use of evidence–based best practices associated with person and family centered care, nurses and healthcare providers can gain the knowledge required to establish therapeutic relationships which empower the ... • 7. The And Family Centered Care Introduction The patient– and family–centered care model recognizes the patient and family relationship as an inseparable entity.1 Encouraging unrestrictive family presence through open visitation practices can ensure critical care patients and their families are provided with the opportunity to maintain communication, actively participate in the decision–making process, and assist with the provision of care.1 Despite professional organizations for critical care nursing advocating for unrestrictive family presence, many critical care units have not adopted an open visitation policy. 2,3 According to the American Association of Critical–Care Nurses, approximately 70% of adult critical care units restrict family visitation.2 In Canada the percentage of critical care units that have adopted an open visitation policy is not formally recorded, however, the Canadian Association of Critical Nurses recognizes that open visitation is not a standardized practice across the country.3 Nurses play a large role in determining visitation practices. The culture of the critical care unit, negative perceptions of family presence, gaps in knowledge about the beneficial effects of open visitation, and the lack of a formal policy influences the decision–making processes to allow unrestrictive family presence.4 In effort to eliminate bias in the decision–making process, nurses need to understand the implications of their perceptions, the benefits of open visitation, and the advantages and ... Victor Hugo PATIENT –CENTERED CARE: AN IDEA WHOSE TIME HAS COME O rganizing the delivery of health care around the needs of the patient may seem like a simple and obvious approach. In a system as complex as health care, however, little is simple. In fact, thirty years ago when the idea of "patient–centered care" first emerged as a return to the holistic roots of health care, it was swiftly dismissed by all but the most philosophically progressive providers as trivial, superficial, or unrealistic. Its defining characteristics of partnering with patients and families, of welcoming―even encouraging―their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, many organizations continue to struggle with what "it" is. This ambiguity ultimately leaves many with vague or muddled expectations for what constitutes patient–centered care. Is it a surprise, then, that many leaders report feeling bewildered at how to go about becoming more patient–centered? Or that others, convinced that their approach is indeed a patient–centered one, are surprised to find data reflecting patient and/or staff discontent? In the broadest terms, patient–centered care is care organized around the patient. It is a model in which providers partner with patients and families to identify and satisfy the full range of patient needs and preferences. Not to be overlooked in defining patient–centered care is its concurrent focus on staff. To succeed, a patient–centered approach must also address the staff experience, as staff's ability and inclination to effectively care for patients is unquestionably compromised if they do not feel cared for themselves. Although patients may not always be able to accurately assess the clinical quality of their care, or whether safety processes are in place, patient safety and high clinical quality are fundamental to a patient–centered approach. Patient–centered care does not replace excellent medicine―it both complements clinical excellence and contributes to it through effective partnerships and communication. A wealth of resources exists to guide organizations in addressing clinical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Patient and family centered care occurs by involving the patient and their family in the care being delivered. The patient and family will be explained procedures and able to ask any questions or voice concerns throughout the delivery of care. They will also have a voice in all health care decisions and will be encouraged to participate in the care. Spruce (2015) mentioned the importance of health literacy among patients in regards to patient centered care (p. 35). This is beneficial because if the patient is able to understand the process of their illness, then they will be better able to understand the treatments available and what they wish to do in their situation. This is a point of patient centered care that I did not mention in my definition. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Out of the 101 articles that were identified by the researchers were 25 distinct frameworks and models that dealt with patient–centered care. The authors wanted to demonstrate the effectiveness of application of each of the 25 models or a combination of them. The three tenants that were envisaged by the Constand and others were health promotion, partnership and communication. The different frameworks were weighed and tested against each other in order to try and develop one framework or identify a single framework that would be generically applied in patient–centered care. The researchers found no evidence that some models were better than others. In this regard, they recommended that nursing staff be on the frontline in appraising the needs of their patients and consequently choose the framework that best works to meet those needs. The researchers further advised that nurses should be confident that either model can achieve all or any of the three tenants espoused in patient–centered care provision. The most widely discussed component of patient–centeredness was communication and it yielded much of the empirical data that was used in making these conclusions. This alternative model would combine knowledge from many disciplines to create optimal care from nurses. Nurses would be able to enhance care and health care outcomes of children and their families. • 17. Family Centered Care At The Hospital During a patients' stay in the hospital the most important care given is to encourage family centered care. Last year, my younger sister had recurring strep throat. Which lead to the decision to get her tonsils removed. My sister is terrified of needles and the idea of a hospital makes her jump out of her skin; she can be a horrible patient. While being admitted the nurse was very kind and patient. Her nurse needed to get an IV into her arm; while doing this the nurse explained everything that she needed to do and even distracted my sister by creating conversation with her. The nurse also noticed how nervous she was and gave her a lilac smelling stick. At the time the hospital was conducting an experiment to see if the stick decreased ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From being admitted, all the way to recovery, the nurses really made the experience less frightening. The staff focused on having my Mom and I present before and after her procedure. As a student, I observed the way the nurses were acting towards my sister. The nurses exhibited the proper way I should be to my patients and to the patient's family: respect, patience and a calm environment to help promote healing. Having the family at the patient's bedside and teaching family how to care for their loved one, is the most important step in a patient's recovery. The main component of family centered care is to ensure a patient, their family and health care professionals are brought together to aid in the healing and recovery of the patient (Resources, 2016). This is particularly important in the pediatric population. The family is a huge part in a child's healing and comfort. A hospital can be overwhelming for a child so in turn the child will want to be surrounded by family, this will help to ensure quicker recovery and help comfort their anxiety. Nurses need to attempt to involve the child's family as much as possible, ultimately the child's stay becomes comfortable and helps to relieve any anxieties the child would be feeling. Sometimes a simple act of allowing the child to try on their stethoscope and listen to their parent's heartbeats, will create a sense of trust and relieve the child's nerves. St. Mary's Children ... • 19. The Concept Of Patient And Family Centered Care The concept of patient and family–centered care has been catapulted to the forefront of the health care system due to the demand of high–quality medical care (Schwarzkopf et al, 2013). Family–centered care identifies that patients exist within a wider social networking of family members and friends (Huffiness et al., 2013). In 2001, the Institute of Medicine published its seminal report, Crossing the Quality Chasm, which depicted the involvement and support of family and friends as a dimension of patient–centeredness (Institute of Medicine, 2001). Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) often do not have decision–making capabilities or are unable to communicate with the health care team due to the severity of illness or the effects of treatment. Family members often assume responsibility and act as surrogate decision makers. The assessment of family satisfaction is therefore utilized in place of patient satisfaction, leading to the shift in focus to family–centered care (Roberti & Fitzpatrick, 2010). Studies have shown that family members of patients in the ICU expressed low levels of satisfaction with communication and emotional support. Clear communication with family of the critically ill was found to be essential for accurate assessment of their needs. It serves as an integral part of meeting the needs of family members of ICU patients (Davidson, et al., 2007). Great emphasis should therefore be placed on improving communication between members of the health care ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Family Centered Care : A Concept Analysis Essay Family–Centered Care in Nursing: A Concept Analysis Jessica Giangrande, RN, BSN Georgia Southern University (intro) "Family–centered care" is a term heard often in healthcare settings and in nursing practice. Family–centered care has been recognized as being an integral part to patient health, satisfaction and health care quality (Kuo, et al, 2012). Family–centered care is implemented with the goal to increase partnerships between, families, patients and providers; and has been prioritized as a core–concept of quality healthcare (Gallo, Hill, Hoagwood & Olin, 2016) Many professionals, however, would be hard–pressed to state what the term "family–centered care" actually means and how it applies to nursing practice. They would be at a loss for how to implement family–centered care and what is absolutely necessary to have in order for family–centered care to be successful. Advanced practice nurses are faced with the challenge of adhering to family–centered care in their practice. Illness, both chronic and acute, and health does not just affect the patient involved in care. Illness and health affect the patient, their children, their spouses, their parents, their brothers, their sisters, their grandparents and anyone else involved in their life. Research by Davidson (2009) supports the idea that the perceived effectiveness of communication between healthcare providers and the patient's family is related to the overall satisfaction of care. Family Centered Care During The Postpartum Setting Family Centered Care in the Postpartum Setting Although an admission into a facility with the purpose of bringing new life into the world is a joyous time for a family; any visit to a hospital setting may still evoke stress and anxiety for both for the family and the patient. Utilizing family centred care, this stress and anxiety can be decreased by collaborating and ensuring that the patients' needs are met and satisfied (Neal et al., 2007). Family centered care recognizes that a patient is not just a stagnant individual on the hospital bed, but an active member of the health care team. Patients are experts of their own lives, and family centered care emphasizes this concept. This scholarly paper will describe the clinical scenario; including an overview of the patients' current and past health history. I will elucidate the meaning of family centred care, four key concepts and its specific application to my clinical scenario. Finally, this paper will include a reflection about my thoughts and feelings regarding the scenario. • 26. Patient Family Centered Care In this article, Working Together to improve the Patient Experience, author Richard Billingsley(2014) explains how working together amongst providers, the patients, and the patient's family improves the patient experience, thus markedly heightening the quality of care. In this article, he also shares how other organizations have successfully adopted a model to facilitate cultural change within their facilities. This cultural model is referred to as patient family centered care (PFCC), and while it is not a new concept, it's emphasis has gained popularity as insurance companies adjust the criteria that encompasses what constitutes as high quality care. Once revered by the volume of care provided, insurance companies now emphasize value of the care provided. In order to remain successful in a market such as this, healthcare institutions must adopt a new culture where the patient experience is central to the care provided. This culture needs to envelope a new mindset where the patient, and patient family are considered equal, active participants in their care. The process of reformulating the culture within an organization is similar to that of the nursing process, commonly referred to as the acronym ADPIE. Family Centered Care Approach "Family centered care is the delivery of safe, satisfying, high–quality health care that focuses on and adapts to the physical and psychosocial needs of the family. It is a cooperative effort between the family and their caregivers and recognizes and uses the strengths and integrity of the family" (Hammerstrand & Loewen, 2013, p. 9). According to Kuo et al. (2012), family centered care has surpassed the basic client/health care provider relationship, FCC encompasses the needs of the entire family as an entity. Benefits that have been noted include knowledge increase from the patient's perspective, better self–care, and self–esteem of the caregivers, which lead to better outcomes for the child involved (Kuo et al., 2012). Harrison (2010) mentions that families want a partnership based relationship with health professionals, but the nurses are still finding it difficult to implement the approach in practice. Research has been done regarding FCC, but outcomes and delivery of FCC remain underdeveloped. All levels of healthcare delivery should be examined when researching FCC, but tertiary care seems to be the main level of care studied. More research needs to be done on the effects of FCC in all areas of healthcare (Harrison, 2010). FCC can be further broken down into eight core concepts, I will discuss four. It is not only nurses who influence the delivery of patient and family centered care; in fact, there is a wide range of health care disciplines that are involved in the process. Some of these disciplines include physicians, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, pharmacy, and case managers. Two vital attributes that contribute to patient and family centered care among the health care team are collaboration and leadership. She realized that patients should be treated with dignity, respect and treatments that are in the best health interest of the patient. The Institute of Medicine defines patient–centered care (PCC) as "care that is respectful of and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs and values," ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions. (Finkelstein, 2012) Being hospitalized can be a stressful time for many patients and their families. Nurses spend more time with patients than any other healthcare team member. In patient centered care, nurses provide the knowledge, resources, and support that each client needs to be involved in informed decision–making processes, assume important aspects of total self–care (if capable), and change behaviors to promote health and a better quality of life (Hood, 2015). The overall health outcome of patients revolves around patient centered care. Establishing a healthy nurse–patient relationship is key to patient centered care. Four Principles Of Family Centered Care In Pediatric Nursing 4 Principles of Family Centered Care in Pediatric Nursing Family centered care (FCC) is an effective framework that many nurse practitioners have adopted in the United States. [1] As early as 1966, researchers such as Claire Fagin PhD. have called for a transformation in the role that pediatric nurse practitioners (PNPs) play in promoting bonding between newborns and their mothers. Today, nurse practitioners have answered this call by implementingfamily centered care, which blends clinical practice, caregiving, family principles in the health care environment. Practitioners who implement FCC frameworks promote professional accountability for the welfare of children, as well as the physical, emotional and psychological well–being of newborns. An brief overview of the philosophy embraced by FCC nurse practitioners is outlined in the following four sections. Principle 1: Open Communication Family centered care revolves around open, objective, and unbiased information sharing. [2] In the academic setting, educators teach FCC principle during Family Centered Rounds (FCRs). FCRs preparing new nurses to apply strategic family centered principles, for example in such as emergency room settings where the discipline calls for measures such as maintaining patient flow, making sure the families stay together, and coordinating required services. The Impact of Patient–Centered Care on Quality of Patient Care Rachel Stoller, RN Robert Morris University What would happen if patients were able to create their own healthcare experience? What would it look like? How would they benefit? I plan to discuss these hypotheticals through research regarding Patient–Centered Care. After all, studies and surveys performed by the Institute of Medicine and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, read that engaged patients in any health care setting, have better perceived health outcomes, thus higher actual quality patient outcomes. Relating to the above, I believe that engaged learners have a better understanding of the material and thus more effective practice outcomes. Because of this belief, I would use informal lecture coupled with a series of patient narratives and class discussions regarding the patient–centeredness of care–team and patient interactions. In teams, we would discuss patient outcomes, care team involvement and behaviors, provider prompts, patient prompts, professional responsibility, what was and was not patient–centered, barriers to care and areas of opportunity to meet patient needs.
