Figurative Language In The Raven
1 Figurative Language in "The Raven" In Edgar Allen Poe's' Poem, "The Raven", there is a prominent theme of grief that the speaker feels for the late
Lenore. His poem created a dark and ominous tone through the languagechosen. The three main methods used to convey the theme and tone are the
clear use of repetition, alliteration, and rhyme. With each passing repetition, the speaker becomes more frantic. He repeatedly checks the"tapping at my
chamber door", to find nothing there. Expecting to find a "visitor", perhaps this "Lenore". Eventually having a "Raven" perch above his "chamber
door" only saying the words "Nevermore", making the speaker start to ponder and continuously ask questions, only to receive the same repetitious
response. With ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"... grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt... " is what the speaker used, describingthe Raven. These adjectives are all an unpleasant way to describe something
and make the poem edgy in certain aspects. "Followed fast and followed faster... " is another great way to show the franticness of the speaker,
allowing the reader to feel more engaged. Using the letter "f" and these particular words make the sentence seem rushed, and brimming with anxiety. In
the fifteenth stanza, religion pops in, mentioning "God" and angels, whilst in the next he uses "Whether Tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee...
". The use of capitalization on "Tempter" indicates he may be referring to the "Devil". On the other hand "tempest tossed thee" meaning a violent
storm perhaps, so the Raven was either sent or somehow throw, tossed, maybe fell here. It's no great tie with him using "thing of evil" and such,
pouring into the dark mood and tone even more. Alliteration was used greatly to pull the readers in more closely, to focus on certain text or parts, to
indulge in the themeand tone more intimately. Rhyme being used in poems is common, and is frequently used in "The Raven". There is rhyme being
strung through every stanza, and many of the same words being mentioned

Fourth Grade Research Paper
4th grade has many great moments, but these moments are my favorite. My favorite moments are when we had fun parties to celebrate the
holidays. Also, one of my favorite is reading. My favorite book is The Fourth Grade Tales of Nothing and, By The Great Horn Spoon, it both has
great humor and it is very tempting to read it. Next, my favorite is when we earn treasure prizes. It has a lot of cool prizes. Lastly, my favorite of
all, the field trips. It was like no other field trips, my favorite one is Sacramento and Raging Waters. Although it was cold at Raging Waters, it was
still fun. I also learn many skills, and activities in fourth grade. One of my favorite skill I learned in fourth grade is, cursive. It looks very

When Reading Changed My Life
There once was a time when I felt liberated. A time when reading was an adventure, where I lived so many different lives, and each was refreshing.
I remember the dim light of the hallway spilling into my bedroom as my dad would sit outside my bedroom door, reading. He read all sorts of
stories, and each he made come to life with his voice, each of the characters with a unique timbre, and my siblings and I hung on every word. I
remember the first time I ever heard Harry Potter, which was one of these times. My father would begin using a British accent when narrating, and as
he proceeded in dialogue, he would use voices that suited the character, a higher pitched girlish voice for Hermione, and a monotoned disinterested
voice for Severus Snape.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I remember dedicating my life to that project, and putting everything I had into that dialectical journal to ensure that I would get the best grade I had
in me. It's a slippery slope to the bottom. It's work like that which causes little lights to burn out. I remember the disappointment I felt when I received
the grade everyone received––collected. And so I began to hate reading. And as I began reading less and less fantasy and more and more non–fiction
and speeches and research, I didn't have the time, nor the attitude to read for fun. I knew the ropes, I knew what to look for, but the things I was
reading about held no value to me. I respected the authors, and I respected the extravagant diction and syntax they had used. But I felt nothing.
And all I could think was, what is a piece of writing if it doesn't make you feel anything? How do you credit it with greatness if it doesn't inspire
you to become better, or leave a lasting impression on you? And so if I seem bitter, please forgive me, for I know that this is my own fault. Reading
is something which can liberate us. However in some rare cases, reading, and writing become the chains that bind us. The things we prioritize become
the things that cause our fears. There comes a time when you realize all of the ideas you've learned, all the opinions you've discovered: your teachers',
your friends', your peers'. And suddenly you realize you

Educating Esme Comprehensive Reflection
Every teacher's worst nightmare – that is the setting to which Madame (whatever you do don't call her Mrs.) Esme Raji Codell stepped into as her
first job fresh out of college. In this sink or swim world Esme, unknowingly, became a lifeguard to thirty youngsters, as she seemed the only one who
could protect the children from the rough waters that are inner city Chicago. Through studying her very candid and personal diary, I am awe stricken
by her extraordinary display of pedagogy as she exemplifies what it truly means to be a teacher. Esme's proficiency in her dealings with situations
surrounding equity, creating a safe, relaxed and positive classroom environment, expectations as a teacher, gender, diversity learning, multicultural...

Bound by her own pledge to professionalism in educating the kids she is so blessed to have, Madame shows sign that she might possess human
qualities, after all, when she admits that she was inclined to yell at Latoya as she was becoming frustrated on having to repeat herself,
consecutively. However, Esme is able to withhold her wit and refrains from doing so as she has vowed to talk and listen privately, as of late. Upon
speaking with the student alone in the hall, Latoya calmly informs her that "they are in the shelter this week and [she] must drop her little sister off
and take the train over... it takes longer than [expected]" (Codell, 1999). Stepping back a moment to gain perspective, these are fifth graders. The
same one where you look forward to daily recess freshly removed from the ideas that the opposite sex have 'coodies' and light up sneakers are cool.
Remember? Oh, yeah! And you walk your sister to drop her off in the mornings before school and then jump on the inner–city Chicago train to get to
school, yourself. As a teacher, you're taught that your students will live very different lives and of the necessity to make accommodations accordingly.
Students' backgrounds cover a vast spectrum, and in order to achieve equity in your classroom, you must accommodate these students and cater to their
specific needs so that, they too, have an

Racial Differences Essay
Racial Differences
"CHINK!!!! Yeah..that's right...look at us with those chinky eyes! Go back to where you belong!" Those words will forever ring in my ears. I was
standing in line for lunch while talking to a friend while a couple of boys, fourth and fifth graders, were making fun of the only Asian girl in the
school, me, a lonely kindergartener. I will never forget that moment when I realized that I was different.
Growing up in a predominantly white community, I had never thought of the issue of race as a child. My neighbor and I were best friends, and I
never thought of myself as different. She had blonde hair; I had black. She had blue eyes; I had dark brown. We loved to play with the same things, thus

In fact, I did not realize I was a combination until that day in the lunch line. Then, I began to question my identity. What defined me as Chinese? What
defined me as American?
Throughout my years in my white neighborhood I grew up as an equal among my classmates. My peers had never teased me; in fact, the incident
with those older boys was the only act of prejudice I have ever experienced. Classmates were very tolerant, and so was I. Forced by circumstance, I
accepted living among all white people and they with me. They became familiar with the only Asian girl in the school, and the racial issue
disappeared. I had friends and my ethnic background was not a problem. They saw my personality and saw me. I was an American.
In tenth grade my AP European History teacher asked me a question that made me realize that people saw me as American. With China threatening
Taiwan and its quest for independence, the United States government was questioning its own involvement in the issue. My teacher asked me, "If we
went to war with China, which side would you be on?"
"The side I felt was right," I responded without question. "No, you would side with America, because you are an American," he curtly stated. "I am
American, but I am also Chinese," I muttered gruffly. "No, you were born in America; you are American."
"Yes, that is true, but the blood that runs through me is Chinese. I cannot change my

In her article "Time to Kill 'No Child Left Behind'," Diane Ravitch (2009) explains the consequences if the NCLB requirements are not met:
Schools that do not make progress toward the goal of 100% proficiency for every group are subject to increasingly, stringent sanctions. In their
second year of failing to make "adequate yearly progress" for any group, failing schools have their students given the choice of leaving to enroll in
a better public school. In the third year of a school's failure, students are entitled to free tutoring after school. In the subsequent years, the failing
school may be converted to private management, turned into a charter school, have its entire staff dismissed, or be handed over to the state. (p. 5)
The federal government is not taking NCLB lightly. It is serious about each of these consequences and is ready to bring them upon any school that
does not make adequate yearly progress. With the increased efforts being made to meet AYP, educators are feeling the pressure and they are becoming
very stressed about their jobs. An article by Alvin Granowsky (2008), explains that "schools that have low scores and/or do not show needed
improvements in test results, receive negative labels, such as unacceptable, and their teachers and administrators threatened with loss of jobs" (p. 1).
Unfortunately, this No Child Left Behind 6 causes teachers to be afraid that if their schools

It did not take a genius to see that Minerva's hatred had true root within her heart, and her extensive knowledge of the dictators corruption just drove
this even more so.
The youngest sister, Maria Teresa is often portrayed in a light of innocence and this enforced by her quiet nature. Throughout her narration she refers
to death a lot, discussing it as a fear and having recurring dreams of a coffin. This was evident to the effect her fathers death had on her. Her marriage
to Leandro and birth of daughter Jacqueline brings her out of her shell and like her elder sisters, she joins the fight with same tenacity.
The second sister, DedГЁ was the only sister not a confident member of the revolutionary movement, and the only one who survived Trujillo's reign.
Her husband Jaimito was the reason for her lack of participation and the father to her three children, Enrique, Rafael and David. It was DedГЁ caution
that saved her life but led her too much regret when conflict began to tear DedГЁ and her husband apart. Whilst her suspicions about her sisters being
killed were always very real, she never thought that her worst fear would come true.
The final revolt saw The Butterflies with six official standing members; the Mirabal sisters and their husbands. Their children and various members of
other revolutionary groups had also been identified. The movement met weekly in Monte Cristi at the home

Essay on Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Mentors feature prominently in the Gothic genre. From Dr Van Helsing in Bram Stoker's Dracula, who leads the young heroes into their quest to
annihilate the Count, to Rupert Giles, the Watcher in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, older and more experienced adults have provided essential guidance
for the younger protagonists of the genre. The differences in media of expression and the subsequent adaptations from novel to television series has not
affected the presence of this character, more than a hundred years after the publication of Dracula in 1897. What also unites the novel and the series is
their fin–de–siГЁcle resonance.

The old man always appears when the hero is in a hopeless and desperate situation and needs guidance because his parents are absent or inadequate .
Giles indeed appears as, to quote Xander in 'Never kill a boy on the first date' (1:5), 'super librarian'. Defined through his knowledge of books and his
appetite for them, his strength is also typically his weakness, as his predicament in 'Nightmares' (1:10) shows. His anguished though characteristically
understated call, 'I'm having a problem. I – I can't read', points to his Achilles' heel.
In the first three series of the show taking place in Sunnydale High, Giles's lair is the library. AfterBuffy enrols in university, Giles's bachelor flat
becomes the de–facto library of the Scooby Gang. His bookishness defines him and gives him his role among the cast of protagonists. In 'Primeval'
(4.21), Giles's contribution to the group's attack against Adam is his intelligence, 'Sophus', his mind. Giles is the brain of the group, Buffy the hand
that strikes. Similarly, Van Helsing in Dracula intervenes in the novel when the young characters need someone with access to occult lore to explain
Lucy's ailment. His knowledge defines him too: Jack Seward refers to him for the first time as 'Professor Van Helsing, of Amsterdam, who knows as
much about obscure diseases as anyone in the world' (Dracula, 111), and alter as 'Van Helsing, the great specialist' (Dracula, 117).

Summary Of ' Playing Until Death '
"Playing Until Death"
3...2...1 "tag you're it"; my sister Stephanie, said.
"No you're it"; I said. We were all happy because we all were waiting for our uncle to come. We haven't seen him in 8 years. When we were playing
outside we were talking about how great it was that our uncle was coming here to "El Norte" like all Hispanics say it when they leave their homeland
to come and search for "The American Dream".
See I come from a big family my father came to this country from Honduras, alone with no money crossing all Central America, Mexico and parts
of this country. He faced all kinds of struggles. Life for him hasn't been easy at all. Since he was a child he has worked so hard. In his homeland he
never had much food and sometimes he never ate because he had six younger siblings to take care of and they always came first. Frankly, I believe
I inherited the same qualities from my father because I'm the oldest sister of the family and I have to take responsibilities for my siblings which
sometimes It frustrates me since I'm the first born I get no help from my parents, because they are suffering from culture shock. Eventually it makes
me cry because I face new things and I get worried if I'm not doing the right thing, I never want to let my family down because I want to provide for
them as they provide for me.
I often wonder why God picked me to be the oldest. We haven't seen our uncle since we've been to my father's homeland and my father saw him when
he was nine years

Essay on Animal Testing
Imagine being a rabbit; a vertebrate and warm blooded species. Hopping around an open field and eating all greens. All of sudden, you were captured
by an unknown human. You start to rattle around your cage figuring out how to escape. About "twenty
–five million and 30 million" animals are
exploited in experiments; "half are only used through education" (Donna 7).
"A 40% is applied in basic research, the 26% for drug development, a 20% are examined for products, and the 14% that is left is applied on education

For instances, those involved in auctions and animals sold publicly are to keep records. On the contrary, it does not support all animal rights; the law
ought to emphasis those out in business too. Beyond that, in 1976 adjustments were made in the amendment. In fact, this time it includes more steps to
those companies in the animal testing business (Donna 16). Each corporation is required to register and keep records of the species. Again it had
affected those who are employed in auctions, operators, dealers, and exhibitors to be certified. Thus certified employees must submit an annual report
to congress. The reports helped the Congressmen keep track of the species; so living things would not be mistreated. Moreover the act expanded dogs'
safety. Hounds were only acceptable for breeders, security, hunting, and as house hold pets. But there is a catch to it; dog owners must provide
treatments (Donna 8). Signifying hounds would receive yearly check up on their satiability of well nutrients. However the act was expanding, it
excluded most of the rights towards animals. In addition to the amendment, in 1985 it was re–modified again. It incorporated the labs and the
environment of the organisms. "The act demanded laboratories to provide exercise and a physical environment, to balance the pain and stress for the
species, and minimize the use of drugs" (Donna 8). Despite the reduction of drugs it does not improve the consumption towards the

Their Eyes Were Watching God Literary Analysis
When reading this book, I couldn't help but compare it to others with similar themes that I've read during my high school career. One book in
particular that I remember would be the book, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurst. I read this senior year and both books had very
similar themes and strong female characters. The main character Janie, thoroughly develops throughout the entire book through the different men
and life experiences she goes through. This is just like Maya as she goes through her life! Both these novels would be considered coming of age
novels because the characters use their life experiences to model who they become as adults. By reading similar books like this, I had an idea of what

One example of this would be the 8th grade graduation speech given to the students by Donleavy. The man talks about the athletic achievements of
the black students, but by doing so, ignores the academic achievements of the students, further perpetuating the idea that the only thing that black
people are good for is sports. This affects all the students, and causes an air of disappointment and melancholy. As Maya states herself, "the
accomplishment was nothing... Donleavy had exposed us" (180). Another event that exemplifies racism would be when Dr. Lincoln blatantly
refused service to Maya because she was black, even though Momma gave him a loan that saved his practice. This shows the environment back
then and how black people were almost considered another species. A third example would be when Bailey came home after he was forced to help
a white man pull a dead black man's body out of a pond. There was a genuine lack of care from the white man when he saw the dead black man, and
this once again emphasizes how African Americans were looked at as

Education And English Literature Work
Education and English literature work hand– and–hand with equipping children in the early childhood years with the skills needed to be successful in
future education. This is because "the early childhood years serve as an important foundation for subsequent literacy development" (Neuman &
Dickinson, 2001; Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998; Whitehurst & Lonigan, 2001) (Stephen Green, 2006). During the early childhood years children's
brains are constantly absorbing everything they learn or come in contact with.
"The degree to which children acquire requisite literacy skills is known to be a strong predictor of future academic success and has long–term social
and economic implications for families and societies (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998; Werner & Smith, 1992) (Stephen Green, 2006). In a joint position
statement issued by the International Reading Association (IRA) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the
authors states, "One of the best predictors of whether a child will function competently in school and go on to contribute actively in our increasingly
literate society is the level to which the child progresses in reading and writing" (IRA/NAEYC, 1998, p. 30)." Introducing and promoting education and
literature at a young age can promote habits of reading and learning for fun and understanding for many years to come.
Education is built on the concept of giving and or receiving information in methodically ways. Negroponte, a well–known

Tall tale signs are: homes where trash cans are never taken out to the street, where overgrown plants are never trimmed or where the gardener or

Dangers Of Conformity
Control, leverage, and power are key words used in current society. People wield them like a sword under the guise that it's always in the best
interest of the person that's on the wrong end of the sword. Conformity is often the first step to loss of individuality. People don't choose to conform,
they are forced to conform. The dangers of conformity aren't just the loss of independence and individuality, it often creates a scenario where we
become so afraid, and it becomes so uncomfortable to question those in authority that we often end up conforming before we're even asked to. We're a
leaderless society because the last thing that people want, in a position of power, is to have an uprising from the people beneath them. The goal of

what I had done was wrong, but he was more focused on what I had done and how it embarrassed him. Again, I was confounded how everyone in
the world looked at it different than I did. I wasn't trying to be obstinate or an instigator, but I told my dad, the embarrassing thing is to pass the

into giving anything, these people had the free will to give or not to give and then he asked me how I could think the church was guilting people
into giving. To me, the answer was obvious, if they truly wanted to make it free will, they wouldn't pass the plate around so every parishioner

choice to give or not. My dad replied, if they do that, no one give. Without thinking of where I was, I said, "That's my fucking point." Realizing that
he had been caught, and that my point was completely reinforced, my dad immediately took the focus off of the church and put it on my language.
Not because he found my language appalling, but that he found my logic insulting. He then asked me why I took money out. I told him, it was

You can take this everywhere you go, which is why it is portable magic. My reading history can be summed up in my childhood years, my teen years,
and what I am currently reading.
In my early childhood years I was introduced to reading at a young age. I can remember learning to read in Kindergarten and having it change me
forever. Starting off I always liked reading easy, funny, books like Captain Underpants. This series of books was hilarious to me, plus it had pictures so
It created a nice mix of reading and laughter. Also, this is where I started to have a deep love for fantasy. I began to read The Magic Tree House series,
which were short and easy fantasy reads that kept my mind racing. The magic really occurred to me as a child, when I could figuratively put
myself into the worlds of these books I was reading. My real first challenge, was when I was in fourth grade, and the first Harry Potter book was
released. This book was very long for me at the time and had about 300 pages. Once I began reading it though, I ... Show more content on

Vietnam war. I, myself served in the Afghanistan war and reading these types of books really touches me close to home. Military and historical books

The Value Of Literacy As A Whole
Word's have power and meaning beyond what they may initially seem. People have even dedicated their entire lives to stringing words together in
such a way that a story is born. In doing this new wonderful worlds and thoughts could be shared. It is thanks to those amazing people that I have
become who I am today, a reader with the ability to understand difficult concepts and share my own thoughts in a way that anyone could understand.
Although I was able to understand the many parts that make up literacy it took years for me to master the verbalizing of literacy. It was within my
speech therapy that I truly learned the value of literacy as a whole. Reading is only a part of what literacy really is. I have come to know literacy as the

Mrs. Yarbrough introduced me to another aspect of literacy, writing. Writing gave me an outlet to express the ideas in my head. In the first week of
school we were assigned a writing project. This assignment entailed of introducing ourselves and telling everyone in the class a little bit about
ourselves in an attempt to get to know everyone. This was the first of many 'get to know you' papers in my academic future. Although none left
quite the mark that this first paper had on me. I was really excited to write, but when Mrs. Yarbrough announced to the class that we were going to
read our papers out loud to the class I felt a weight drop in my stomach. I really wanted to share what I had written with the world, well my class
but at that point my class was my world, but I had a speech impendent that hindered me from pronouncing: th, t, l, r. I was worried that everyone
would laugh at me. Somehow I got the idea in my head that because they were my own words that I had written they would sit as comfortably in my
mouth as they do with everyone else. When the day had arrived for us to read our introductions I sat in anticipation proud and ready to share my
work. I was still nervous. The butterflies in my stomach were threatening to come out the closer Mrs. Yarbrough got to my name on her list. Thoughts

Children's Lit Task 1
Part A.
In the past five years, children's literature has had many common themes. Bullying has been a popular subject of interest at all levels of reading. This
trend reflects a rising concern about cyberbullying and the sometimes dramatic effects it can have on a child's life. Writers and parents are making an
effort to show children that what they do to their peers has real consequences and to be mindful with their words and actions. Another popular subject is
dystopian futures. This interest is in part due to the success of The Hunger Games trilogy, children have become interested in the future of their planet.
Another interesting trend in children's literature is mixing of genres, such as mixing cartoons and novels, which may be ... Show more content on

First Day Of School
It was the first day of school. Children, manhandled out of minivans, walked over precipitous hills, and crossed dangerous streets of monstrous cars
wanting a bite out of any child that came its way. All to go to the sprawling, tan building for a full seven and a half hours of learning. Among those
children, was a little girl. Her father urged her into the building, and made the usual remarks about how he'll see her later, and for her to be a good
girl. A teacher took her hand and guided her to the preschool classroom where she would spend the year.
"What's your name, honey?" The teacher asked sweetly.
"Hayley." The little girl murmured. "Are you gonna be my teacher?" "Yep! I'm Miss Jenny, and we're going to have a lot of fun this year!" Miss
Jenny insisted, sounding over enthusiastic. Hayley said nothing, holding Miss Jenny's cool hand decorated with cheap jewelry and rings that felt icy
against Hayley's clammy, sweaty, little palms. An aroma of macaroni noodles and baby wipes greeted them as they entered the room. There were ten
other small children, some waddling on the carpet, one sticking his head in a trash can, and multiple more trying to eat fake food out of the toy bins.
Miss Jenny took Hayley's coat and put it in her small wooden cubby along with her Disney Princess backpack.

Child Literacy Research Paper
The Effects of Teaching Methods on Child Literacy
Teaching children how to read is the most influential part of a child's education. The base of any child's education relies on the ability to read and
write. Many children all over America will grow older without having a proper education. In result of this, many jobs are unreachable to America's
population that can not do daily basic educational activities. Teaching methods have an immense impact on childliteracy. Literacy in the United States
during 1947 was at an all time low. Only about 2.7 percent of Americans knew how to read or write. Nicknamed the "illiterates" during WWII,
soldiers were given special training. In 1947, 106 million people populated the U.S. Roughly 2.8 million were children under the age of fourteen and

Chris Mccandless Hero
At times when myth and legend were among the sole sources of entertainment, tragedies were a welcome escape from impoverished life. There is
evidence of tragedy in Sean Penn's Into the Wild film adaptation, wherein like most similar stories; there is a hero. The film follows Christopher
McCandless, a young man in search of self–actualization. More often than not, tragic heroes follow a general template consisting of promise, failure,
conflict, and impact upon an audience. In Into the Wild, Chris McCandless' life is that of a tragedy in which his role is the hero. This is evident because
Chris is archetypal of the tragic hero, he has an external conflict with an existing power, and the outcome of his story is discernibly tragic.

Sean Penn has developed a tragedy worthy of praise in his adaptation of Into the Wild, capturing the valour of Chris McCandless and his journey.

A Civil Action The Love Canal crisis is an epidemic that will shake the roots of this country for centuries. From 1942 to 1953 a landfill in Niagara

levels of the Niagara River, which evidentially separated by Niagara Falls. His plan sought to integrate a canal that would utilize hydroelectric
power to create energy. His plan was an utter failure due to the economic collapse of 1892. The construction of the canal continued for a while prior
to the economic collapse. After only one mile, at fifteen feet wide and ten feet deep, the canal had been partly dugged. The canal was sold in 1920 to
the city of Niagara falls which began using it as an area for chemical waste disposal, followed by the United States Army burying waste from
chemical warfare experiments. Hooker Chemical and Plastics Corporation attained the property in 1947 and buried 21,000 tons of toxic waste for the
next five years. During this duration, the Niagara population was extending rapidly, and the city was highly desperate for land. The city purchased the
land for $1. A school was constructed on the landfill which punctured a copper barrier Hooker had used to enclose the chemical waste. Later on,

In this essay I will explain the similarities and differences with the topic of genders and sexuality between the stories Weetzie Bat by Francesce Lia
Block, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and The Color of Earth by Dong Hwa Kim. Each of these books are mainly for girl readers
and it shows female characters facing changes as they are maturing from young children to young adults. On the surface there are a lot of similarities
between the stories Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Weetzie Bat and The Color of Earth. The main characters Alice, Weetzie and Ehwa have a
journey or an adventure they are going through that will help their character development at the end of the story. In Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

How Did Anne Moody Contribute To The Civil Rights Movement
The abolishment of slavery in 1865 was only the beginning of a long, strenuous fight for African American citizens in the United States. The abolition
may have freed the slaves physically but did not free them of the social injustices they had yet to endure. The African American civil rights movement
took place in 1954 through 1968. (history.com) The civil rights movement is described as the struggle for social justice, a battle fought for blacks to
be seen as equals under the laws of the United states. Many people were involved in progressing the movement including but not limited to Rosa Parks,
Martin Luther King Jr, Malcom X and Anne Moody. Throughout her lifetime Anne Moody has had a major impact on theAfrican American Civil rights
movement. Despite her personal struggles, Moody used her life to promote the enlightenment and progression of African American citizens. Moody's
perseverance, hatred, and alienation contributed to her educational and creative success as well as her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement in
the novel, Coming of age in Mississippi.

I full heartedly blame my previous teachers for my current writing disability. I had just turned ten years old, we were about to begin our very first

brief, terrible stories both true and fictional that I'm truly sorry and grateful my teacher was able to read. Later, my writing began to improve and we
learned to write in an argumentative and analytical way using facts and evidence and this is where I thrived. I loved the hours of research and the
beauty of writing a well formulated thought. Then I noticed the lack of "I." As my writing grew more bearable, the point of view changed and I took a

Marginalized Voice In Wolf Whistle
The case of Emmett Till has many different interpretations, but there is one in particular, that is quite similar to the actual story. The fictional
book, Wolf Whistle, was set in the 1950's and written by Lewis Nordan. Nordan uses many literary devices such as: marginalized voice, magical
realism, and symbolism to compare Bobo to Emmett Till. The story is centered around Bobo's visit to Mississippi to see his family. When Bobo
goes to the local grocery store with his friends, they dare him to "wolf whistle" at a white woman, Sally Anne Montberclaire. During the story,
Nordan encapsulates the tale of Bobo being murdered by two white men and the men going to trial. In the 1950's Emmett Till traveled to Mississippi
from Chicago to visit his family. Till was out with a group of friends when he was dared to whistle at a white woman, Carolyn Bryant, in the grocery
store. Her husband and brother–in–law kidnapped Till from his uncle's house. Roy Bryant and his brother... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Wings Wings bring lift to animals so as they may fly. In the study of the Enneagram, the wings are the adjacent types to your core type. Each
person has two wings but the balance between these two to the core type varies from person to person. The wings may be more potent than the core.
They may be hidden or be proportioned. The wings exist to introduce a person's "alternate self" or his "other side." Wings may improve the core
personality or contradict it completely. The whole idea of wings merely points out that personality fluctuate and explain how a person may does not act

The Arrows From the diagram shown before, we find arrowheads at the end of the line. In the Enneagram, there are arrows of integration and
disintegration. Integration, as defined in a dictionary, is the idea of blending something into a whole while disintegration duly means the opposite.
Arrows like the wings affect the core personality type only that arrows are triggered with the person's state of mind or stress level. When stressed, as
strained or due to certain circumstances leaves the mind in tumultuous bearings, the person would exhibit the arrow of disintegration or the type
which points to your core type. Here, a person acquires the sin of the arrow or the negative attributes of that type. This is why the arrow of
disintegration is also referred to as the negative arrow. For the arrow of integration, a person is calm or relaxed in his present state

literature that was totally new to me, I actually found this reading to be enjoyable. Tales of penis's flying off to impreganate women far away
certainly were a surprise and far from boring. While I firmly believe in the Genesis story of creation, I have always been fascinated by learning about
the beliefs of other cultures. I recall loving geography in sixth grade because we got to study other cultures. I don't recall... Show more content on

The diversity of beliefs across the different tribes was interesting; yet nature and animals were common themes throughout the tribal tales. I am
fascinated that these stories have survived years of being passed down orally as they were not written down until the Europeans began collecting them
in the 1800s. The Iroquois tale of two sons– one good and one bad –seem to personify the fight between good and evil that is found in most religions.
Just like God and the Devil compete for souls, these sons fought for control. As often happens, good wins. In the Pima creation tale, Juhwertamahkai
created then destroyed man and woman three times as they took up bad habits; on the fourth try he gave up and let them be. While these creation tales
don't match the Genesis story that most of who grow up in the Bible belt learn from a very young age, they do share some common themes: creation of

Malencia Vale And The Testing
Fond remembrances of people, places and things with whom one has shared memorable events and experiences with is yet another double edged
sword life has to offer. Contemplating the route of a particular life and its direction may lead to a literature class freshman year of high school.
Perhaps it could possibly have been the favored class of many students that year. Encompassing enrichment of personal writing skills along with
explaining the nature of short story writing may have involved an enduring rhyme. By chance, this could have gone along the lines of "plot, character,
conflict, theme, SETTING, yes these are the five things that you better be needing when you're reading or writing a short story that's mad exciting..."
Anyways, besides ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Testing and its constant, engaging sequences of events subject to change at a moments notice provided a wide array of options to discuss in
greater detail. Conclusively, upon reading the story to the last word, it would presumably be speculated that the most impactful scenes came sprouting
from the four individual Tests. This notion, however, could only prove to be true if the candidate in question failed The Testing in some form. This is
because execution would provide to be a much more dire consequence spurring on the development of the plot rollercoaster than the expected, wholly
uninteresting survival constantly seen with Cia. Accordingly, that is why the tiniest details proved to be of greater significance. Without the unveiling
of the camera location to Michal, Cia would not have reaped the benefits of his constant help and support in the process of The Testing. Had she not
opened up to her lunch peers in regards to her Testing struggles, the allied forces that resulted may have never grown to their greatest potential. It is
certainly worth mentioning that numerous members of this original assemblage successfully completed The Testing and were recognized as one of the
prestigious students of the University. Lastly, the recording to forewarn her future self of brutalities and betrayals committed back during a

Personal Essay: My Cultural Background And Identity
Cultural Background Paper This paper is written as a presentation of my own cultural background and identity. What I hope to reveal, is where I
come from, how I became who I am today, and how my culture helped to develop me into that person. My background has never really seemed
interesting or particularly pertinent to who I am, until I began this course (HSC570); now, I actually am acutely aware of how important it is to my
present life. It is with excitement and expectancy that I write this paper; based upon my memory of tales told to me by those that I consider to have
been our family historians. Sadly, they have all crossed over from life to eternity. The Beginning I was born on a Monday morning in late May, 1960,
to Andrew, Sr. and Lula Bell Dodd. I am the eleventh of thirteen children, and my parents were separated at the time of my conception and birth. It

I later found that this wasn't the case. Everyone was poor, but, we were poorer than all but two or three other families. Everyone knew everyone,
and the 'village' worked as one unit in the rearing and nurturing of all the children. At times we lived with other relatives, and at times, other relatives
lived with us. I remember my older siblings being around, living with us or within the community, also during this time. In our community, women
worked, as did the men; but, the men were treated like kings (husband or not); they came home and put their feet up, ate first, came and went as they
pleased and always seemed to be threatening to whip the children and the women. The women always seemed to be trying to keep their men happy,
even if it meant sharing him with the woman up the street. They just pretended that they didn't know. I was only privy to this knowledge because I
was always somewhere in a corner with my face in a book, and no one paid attention to my

Figurative Language In The Raven

  • 1. Figurative Language In The Raven 1 Figurative Language in "The Raven" In Edgar Allen Poe's' Poem, "The Raven", there is a prominent theme of grief that the speaker feels for the late Lenore. His poem created a dark and ominous tone through the languagechosen. The three main methods used to convey the theme and tone are the clear use of repetition, alliteration, and rhyme. With each passing repetition, the speaker becomes more frantic. He repeatedly checks the"tapping at my chamber door", to find nothing there. Expecting to find a "visitor", perhaps this "Lenore". Eventually having a "Raven" perch above his "chamber door" only saying the words "Nevermore", making the speaker start to ponder and continuously ask questions, only to receive the same repetitious response. With ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "... grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt... " is what the speaker used, describingthe Raven. These adjectives are all an unpleasant way to describe something and make the poem edgy in certain aspects. "Followed fast and followed faster... " is another great way to show the franticness of the speaker, allowing the reader to feel more engaged. Using the letter "f" and these particular words make the sentence seem rushed, and brimming with anxiety. In the fifteenth stanza, religion pops in, mentioning "God" and angels, whilst in the next he uses "Whether Tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee... ". The use of capitalization on "Tempter" indicates he may be referring to the "Devil". On the other hand "tempest tossed thee" meaning a violent storm perhaps, so the Raven was either sent or somehow throw, tossed, maybe fell here. It's no great tie with him using "thing of evil" and such, pouring into the dark mood and tone even more. Alliteration was used greatly to pull the readers in more closely, to focus on certain text or parts, to indulge in the themeand tone more intimately. Rhyme being used in poems is common, and is frequently used in "The Raven". There is rhyme being strung through every stanza, and many of the same words being mentioned ... • 5. When Reading Changed My Life There once was a time when I felt liberated. A time when reading was an adventure, where I lived so many different lives, and each was refreshing. I remember the dim light of the hallway spilling into my bedroom as my dad would sit outside my bedroom door, reading. He read all sorts of stories, and each he made come to life with his voice, each of the characters with a unique timbre, and my siblings and I hung on every word. I remember the first time I ever heard Harry Potter, which was one of these times. My father would begin using a British accent when narrating, and as he proceeded in dialogue, he would use voices that suited the character, a higher pitched girlish voice for Hermione, and a monotoned disinterested voice for Severus Snape.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I remember dedicating my life to that project, and putting everything I had into that dialectical journal to ensure that I would get the best grade I had in me. It's a slippery slope to the bottom. It's work like that which causes little lights to burn out. I remember the disappointment I felt when I received the grade everyone received––collected. And so I began to hate reading. And as I began reading less and less fantasy and more and more non–fiction and speeches and research, I didn't have the time, nor the attitude to read for fun. I knew the ropes, I knew what to look for, but the things I was reading about held no value to me. I respected the authors, and I respected the extravagant diction and syntax they had used. But I felt nothing. And all I could think was, what is a piece of writing if it doesn't make you feel anything? How do you credit it with greatness if it doesn't inspire you to become better, or leave a lasting impression on you? And so if I seem bitter, please forgive me, for I know that this is my own fault. Reading is something which can liberate us. However in some rare cases, reading, and writing become the chains that bind us. The things we prioritize become the things that cause our fears. There comes a time when you realize all of the ideas you've learned, all the opinions you've discovered: your teachers', your friends', your peers'. And suddenly you realize you ... • 6. Educating Esme Comprehensive Reflection Every teacher's worst nightmare – that is the setting to which Madame (whatever you do don't call her Mrs.) Esme Raji Codell stepped into as her first job fresh out of college. In this sink or swim world Esme, unknowingly, became a lifeguard to thirty youngsters, as she seemed the only one who could protect the children from the rough waters that are inner city Chicago. Through studying her very candid and personal diary, I am awe stricken by her extraordinary display of pedagogy as she exemplifies what it truly means to be a teacher. Esme's proficiency in her dealings with situations surrounding equity, creating a safe, relaxed and positive classroom environment, expectations as a teacher, gender, diversity learning, multicultural... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bound by her own pledge to professionalism in educating the kids she is so blessed to have, Madame shows sign that she might possess human qualities, after all, when she admits that she was inclined to yell at Latoya as she was becoming frustrated on having to repeat herself, consecutively. However, Esme is able to withhold her wit and refrains from doing so as she has vowed to talk and listen privately, as of late. Upon speaking with the student alone in the hall, Latoya calmly informs her that "they are in the shelter this week and [she] must drop her little sister off and take the train over... it takes longer than [expected]" (Codell, 1999). Stepping back a moment to gain perspective, these are fifth graders. The same one where you look forward to daily recess freshly removed from the ideas that the opposite sex have 'coodies' and light up sneakers are cool. Remember? Oh, yeah! And you walk your sister to drop her off in the mornings before school and then jump on the inner–city Chicago train to get to school, yourself. As a teacher, you're taught that your students will live very different lives and of the necessity to make accommodations accordingly. Students' backgrounds cover a vast spectrum, and in order to achieve equity in your classroom, you must accommodate these students and cater to their specific needs so that, they too, have an ... I was standing in line for lunch while talking to a friend while a couple of boys, fourth and fifth graders, were making fun of the only Asian girl in the school, me, a lonely kindergartener. I will never forget that moment when I realized that I was different. Growing up in a predominantly white community, I had never thought of the issue of race as a child. Then, I began to question my identity. What defined me as Chinese? What defined me as American? Throughout my years in my white neighborhood I grew up as an equal among my classmates. My peers had never teased me; in fact, the incident with those older boys was the only act of prejudice I have ever experienced. Classmates were very tolerant, and so was I. Forced by circumstance, I accepted living among all white people and they with me. They became familiar with the only Asian girl in the school, and the racial issue disappeared. I had friends and my ethnic background was not a problem. They saw my personality and saw me. I was an American. In tenth grade my AP European History teacher asked me a question that made me realize that people saw me as American. With China threatening Taiwan and its quest for independence, the United States government was questioning its own involvement in the issue. My teacher asked me, "If we went to war with China, which side would you be on?" "The side I felt was right," I responded without question. "No, you would side with America, because you are an American," he curtly stated. "I am American, but I am also Chinese," I muttered gruffly. "No, you were born in America; you are American." "Yes, that is true, but the blood that runs through me is Chinese. I cannot change my

In her article "Time to Kill 'No Child Left Behind'," Diane Ravitch (2009) explains the consequences if the NCLB requirements are not met: Schools that do not make progress toward the goal of 100% proficiency for every group are subject to increasingly, stringent sanctions. In their second year of failing to make "adequate yearly progress" for any group, failing schools have their students given the choice of leaving to enroll in a better public school. In the third year of a school's failure, students are entitled to free tutoring after school. In the subsequent years, the failing school may be converted to private management, turned into a charter school, have its entire staff dismissed, or be handed over to the state. (p. 5) The federal government is not taking NCLB lightly. It is serious about each of these consequences and is ready to bring them upon any school that does not make adequate yearly progress. With the increased efforts being made to meet AYP, educators are feeling the pressure and they are becoming very stressed about their jobs. An article by Alvin Granowsky (2008), explains that "schools that have low scores and/or do not show needed improvements in test results, receive negative labels, such as unacceptable, and their teachers and administrators threatened with loss of jobs" (p. 1). Throughout her narration she refers to death a lot, discussing it as a fear and having recurring dreams of a coffin. This was evident to the effect her fathers death had on her. Her marriage to Leandro and birth of daughter Jacqueline brings her out of her shell and like her elder sisters, she joins the fight with same tenacity. The second sister, DedГЁ was the only sister not a confident member of the revolutionary movement, and the only one who survived Trujillo's reign. Her husband Jaimito was the reason for her lack of participation and the father to her three children, Enrique, Rafael and David. It was DedГЁ caution that saved her life but led her too much regret when conflict began to tear DedГЁ and her husband apart. From Dr Van Helsing in Bram Stoker's Dracula, who leads the young heroes into their quest to annihilate the Count, to Rupert Giles, the Watcher in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, older and more experienced adults have provided essential guidance for the younger protagonists of the genre. The differences in media of expression and the subsequent adaptations from novel to television series has not affected the presence of this character, more than a hundred years after the publication of Dracula in 1897. Defined through his knowledge of books and his appetite for them, his strength is also typically his weakness, as his predicament in 'Nightmares' (1:10) shows. His anguished though characteristically understated call, 'I'm having a problem. I – I can't read', points to his Achilles' heel. In the first three series of the show taking place in Sunnydale High, Giles's lair is the library. AfterBuffy enrols in university, Giles's bachelor flat becomes the de–facto library of the Scooby Gang. His bookishness defines him and gives him his role among the cast of protagonists. In 'Primeval' (4.21), Giles's contribution to the group's attack against Adam is his intelligence, 'Sophus', his mind. Giles is the brain of the group, Buffy the hand that strikes. Similarly, Van Helsing in Dracula intervenes in the novel when the young characters need someone with access to occult lore to explain Lucy's ailment. One book in particular that I remember would be the book, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurst. I read this senior year and both books had very similar themes and strong female characters. The main character Janie, thoroughly develops throughout the entire book through the different men and life experiences she goes through. This is just like Maya as she goes through her life! Another event that exemplifies racism would be when Dr. Lincoln blatantly refused service to Maya because she was black, even though Momma gave him a loan that saved his practice. A third example would be when Bailey came home after he was forced to help a white man pull a dead black man's body out of a pond. • 16. Education And English Literature Work Education and English literature work hand– and–hand with equipping children in the early childhood years with the skills needed to be successful in future education. This is because "the early childhood years serve as an important foundation for subsequent literacy development" (Neuman & Dickinson, 2001; Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998; Whitehurst & Lonigan, 2001) (Stephen Green, 2006). During the early childhood years children's brains are constantly absorbing everything they learn or come in contact with. "The degree to which children acquire requisite literacy skills is known to be a strong predictor of future academic success and has long–term social and economic implications for families and societies (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998; Werner & Smith, 1992) (Stephen Green, 2006). In a joint position statement issued by the International Reading Association (IRA) and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the authors states, "One of the best predictors of whether a child will function competently in school and go on to contribute actively in our increasingly literate society is the level to which the child progresses in reading and writing" (IRA/NAEYC, 1998, p. 30)." The canal was sold in 1920 to the city of Niagara falls which began using it as an area for chemical waste disposal, followed by the United States Army burying waste from chemical warfare experiments. Hooker Chemical and Plastics Corporation attained the property in 1947 and buried 21,000 tons of toxic waste for the next five years. During this duration, the Niagara population was extending rapidly, and the city was highly desperate for land. The city purchased the land for $1. A school was constructed on the landfill which punctured a copper barrier Hooker had used to enclose the chemical waste. • 29. Differences Between The Stories ' Bat ' And ' The Color Of... In this essay I will explain the similarities and differences with the topic of genders and sexuality between the stories Weetzie Bat by Francesce Lia Block, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and The Color of Earth by Dong Hwa Kim. Each of these books are mainly for girl readers and it shows female characters facing changes as they are maturing from young children to young adults. On the surface there are a lot of similarities between the stories Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Weetzie Bat and The Color of Earth. The main characters Alice, Weetzie and Ehwa have a journey or an adventure they are going through that will help their character development at the end of the story. In Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Alice is the female protagonist that encounters many strange scenarios that she has to overcome. The action adventures that Alice goes through can be related to adventures a boy character would have. "The girl book can be found in as many varieties as the boy book"(RCL 400). Children were manhandled out of minivans, walked over precipitous hills, and crossed dangerous streets of monstrous cars wanting a bite out of any child that came its way. All to go to the sprawling, tan building for a full seven and a half hours of learning. Among those children, there was a little girl. Her father urged her into the building, and made the usual remarks of how he'll see her later, and for her to be a good girl. A teacher took her hand, and guided her to the preschool classroom where she would spend her school year. "What's your name, honey?" The teacher asked sweetly. "Hayley." The little girl murmured. "Are you gonna be my teacher?" "Yep! I'm Miss Jenny, and we're going to have a lot of fun this year!" Miss Jenny insisted, sounding over enthusiastic. Hayley said nothing, holding Miss Jenny's cool hand decorated with cheap jewelry and rings that felt icy against Hayley's clammy, sweaty, little palms. An aroma of macaroni noodles and baby wipes greeted them as they entered the room. There were ten other small children, some waddling on the carpet, one sticking his head in a trash can, and multiple more trying to eat fake food out of the toy bins. Miss Jenny took Hayley's coat and put it in her small wooden cubby along with her Disney Princess backpack. "You can go do a craft or play with the other kids, okay?" I had just turned ten years old, we were about to begin our very first essays and it was on that day that my hatred of personal essays began. I didn't find it difficult to write and I actually enjoyed the experience. We wrote brief, terrible stories both true and fictional that I'm truly sorry and grateful my teacher was able to read. Later, my writing began to improve and we learned to write in an argumentative and analytical way using facts and evidence and this is where I thrived. I loved the hours of research and the beauty of writing a well formulated thought. Then I noticed the lack of "I." The fictional book, Wolf Whistle, was set in the 1950's and written by Lewis Nordan. Nordan uses many literary devices such as: marginalized voice, magical realism, and symbolism to compare Bobo to Emmett Till. The story is centered around Bobo's visit to Mississippi to see his family. When Bobo goes to the local grocery store with his friends, they dare him to "wolf whistle" at a white woman, Sally Anne Montberclaire. During the story, Nordan encapsulates the tale of Bobo being murdered by two white men and the men going to trial. In the 1950's Emmett Till traveled to Mississippi from Chicago to visit his family. In the 1940s, mythologist and writerJoseph Campbell decided to analyze the mythic and archetypal principles embedded in the structure of stories.
