2. The Earth
The Earth is the third
planet from the sun
and the moon is its
satellite. The moon
orbits the Earth. The
Earth is called a
celestial body
because it is a planet.
This means that it is a
natural object in the
sky. The earth orbits
the Sun like all the
planets. It is a rocky
planet.
3. The Earth’s rotation and orbit
The earth rotates on its axis and this rotation is why
we have day and night. It takes twenty-four hours to
rotate on its axis.
The earths axis is tilted.When
the earth orbits the Sun, one
hemisphere receives more light
and heat than the other. This
causes different climates on
Earth and different seasons.
When it’s winter in the northern
hemispere, it’s summer in the
southern hemisphere and when
it’s summer in the southern
hemisphere, it’s winter in the
northern hemisphere.
5. Maps show the Earth as flat. We can see length and
height. We can fold a map and easily take it with us.
Globes show the earth as a sphere.
They look like the real Earth.
The directions on maps
and globes are N for
north, S for south, E for
east and W for west.
6. The Equator divides the earth into
the northern hemisphere and the
southern hemisphere
