Mexico is the eleventh most populated country in the world with a $2.2 trillion economy (CIA, 2017). It is also an extremely popular tourist
destination for Americans and Europeans alike. Moreover, its people have had the highest average annual hours worked in the world every year for the
last three years (OECD, 2017). Despite this, their unemployment rate is estimated to be 3.6% and their underemployment at 25% (CIA, 2017). I am
going to expand on this country's issues with corruption, organized crime, violence, the economy, and how I assess their future will affects us here in
the United States.
Like many countries in turmoil, corruption is and has been a big part of Mexico's political scene, especially with domestic criminal organizations such
as the drug cartels. Mexico's politicians have not only stolen public funds but they have also made complicit agreements with multiple drug cartels.
"Mexico ranks No. 123 in Transparency International's 2016 Corruption Perception Index, 25 spots lower than the year before. Analysts say it's
unclear whether corruption has gotten worse or has merely become more visible because of transparency laws, journalists increasingly uncovering
graft and social media exposing politicians' excesses" (Agren, 2017). In recent years there have been multiple Mexican politicians prosecuted and
arrested due to their illegal dealings but the cycle just continues with their successors. Take Javier Duarte for example, who was the governor of
Veracruz State from 2010 to 2016 and managed to steal $3 billion from public funds meanwhile violence spread throughout the state. The violence was
so severe that mass graves with 250 skulls were discovered and at least 17 journalists were murdered during his tenure (Agren, 2017). Additionally, the
two former Tamaulipas State governors were both indicted for their involvement in illicit activities. The former governor, TomГ
Ўs Yarrington, was
accused of taking bribes from both the Zetas Cartel and the Gulf Cartel; meanwhile in 2015 his successor, Eugenio HernГЎndez, was indicted in Texas
on federal money laundering charges (Agren, 2017).

Mexico City is a city rich in history and culture. However, it also has the one of the largest slums in the world. Poverty is visible all over the city,
even in the wealthier parts. The divide is obvious, as the popularity of urbanisation grew too fast for that of the city. Mexico City is based over a
large valley in the high plateaus right in the centre of Mexico, at an altitude of 2,240 metres, and spanning over 1,485 klm2. In 2010, the population of
Mexico was 8.8 million.
Availability of fresh water is an ongoing problem. A 2000 census revealed that 1.8 million people in Mexico live without fresh water. Mexico City was
originally built over a lake that was drained, however the engineers realised it was a bad mistake as they now lacked any reliable source of fresh water.

Mexico City is a mixture of historic attractions and buildings, and in contrast the slums make up 45.5% of the city. Small, polluted streets cramped
with more residents, lacking things commonly taken for granted, even pavement and roofs. Houses, stacked on top of each other, sharing walls and
being supported by each other. The slums take up a very large part of the city, and both are separated with a literal wall, which has even stronger

Following the assassination of the 1928 president elect, the president at the time, Plutarco Elias Calles, founded the National Revolutionary Party. The
party was later renamed the Institutional Revolutionary Party (Partido Revolucionario Institucional, PRI in Spanish). Over the next 71 years the PRI
dominated every presidential election to remain in power and its members used their position for personal gain and attainment. After centuries of
controlling the nation, the PRI gained the reputation of a corrupt party frequently engaging in electoral fraud. One of the PRI's most powerful tools in

right and use it to their advantage. In this definition of free speech, the definition of morality and public order is left up to the discretion of the
government and media regulators. As a result, the PRI was able to censor or fine journalists and media outlets that published stories portraying the
party in a negative light and claim it was one of the exceptions to free speech. As a result, the PRI was able to remove most, if not all, of their critics

3.5 MILITARY ABUSES
In Mexico the military is used a lot for fighting crimes drug–related that are violent. The military has committed strong violations against the human
rights though while enforcing the law. From 2007– November 2012 109 cases have been found where the Mexican army has committed serious Human
Rights violations. Although the military is making violations against the Human Rights they are not being bought to justice.
3.6 UNFAIR TRIALS
There are many cases of unfair trials in Mexico. This is because the country is very bias and lives by the army. The army get away with a lot of things
