What Is A Leader Essay
1. What Is A Leader? Essay
What is a leader? When thinking about this question I feel like you have to really know what it
means to be a leader. Webster Dictionary definition is: a time when a person holds the position of
a leader. No one is born a leader, leaderships skills comes from life experiences, education and
employment. Everyone grows into a leader and then afterwards grow into a leadership style that will
eventually begin to shape and inspire other leaders. Having a title or high above power does not
make you a leader. Inspiring and providing great communication, confidence, advice, laughs,
knowledge, honesty and reality. Those great skills help you become a great leader. Even with these
great leadership skills, there are many different kinds of leadership styles.
"Becoming the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily; even if you had no title or
position." –Brian Tracy
Are you a participative leader? Participative leaders or better known as democratic leaders include
team members and others, but making the final decision is up to the participative leader.
Participative leaders build confidence and knowledge within team members because their inputs
matter within decision making. It helps team members think their opinions, help with decisions. If
there is a change that needs to be implemented a participative leader helps team members
understand the change in a positive way. I would definitely consider myself a participative leader

2. Leadership : What Is Leadership?
What is leadership? Having good leadership is necessary for any organization. Definitions of
leadership are varied. It is a fundamental element within society that has attracted the interest of
thousands of scientists, historians, and philosophers for hundreds of years, yet none of them can
decide upon its meaning. Cook (2000) calls leadership the "ability to learn and adapt to change, a
risk taker and using personal powers to win the hearts and minds of people to achieve a common
purpose." Northouse (2010) claims leadership is change and movement. Burns (1978) defines
leadership as "a mobilization process by individuals with certain motives, values, and access to
resources in a context of competition and conflict in pursuit of goals" For my purposes, leadership
is merely managing knowledge in a way that leads to creating and sharing knowledge within an
organization (Chi, Lan, & Dorjgotov, 2012). The success of leadership in organizations often varies
significantly and identifying leadership styles that suit an organization best is an essential skill in
any CEO, manager, director, or alike.
THEORY AND APPROACH
Transformational Leadership
There are countless theories about leadership that have been sorted and organized into several
precise approaches or styles based on traits, behaviors, situational factors, or culture factors. In the
1970s, James MacGregor Burns developed a more complex approach to leadership which he called
transformational leadership. The goals of

To me, leadership is more than a title. It is more than just being in charge. Leadership is honestly,
learning, listening, and most importantly application. Leadership means going the extra mile or two,
doing the right thing no matter who's looking, staying encouraged and encouraging other even when
times are hard and you have every reason to quit. Leadership doesn't mean you're rich, well known,
liked, or respected but it does mean you are a passionate, caring, and authentic. Leadership means
you care about something so much you are willing to risk everything you have for this belief or
idea. Leadership is doing whatever you can in your power to make things better for those around you.

You don't have to be sure of every single action but you can't fear the future or change because in
order to accomplish your goal change is often necessary. A bold attitude is a definite must.
Leaders will always come against someone or something that opposes what they believe,
boldness will give them the strength to keep going even when the people they lead have start to
disappear or they have grown weak. At the first that you are ready to give up they will abandon
ship as the leader it must be a part of your character to be bold and keep going no matter how hard
things may seem. This characteristics tie in with the earlier trait of inspiration. When other see how
bold you are they will realize that just maybe if you're willing to put this much on the line, face the
probability of being ridiculed and disowned by your and the rest of society just maybe you stand for
something that is right and maybe they should too.
These characteristics are all great but to have the ability to truly lead you need conviction.
Conviction to keep going you going when your boldness has eliminated your friends, when your
yourself needs inspiration, when you don't want to be genuine, when you want to give up and take

4. My Opinion on What Makes a Leader Essay
Leadership Leadership is a role that a person will step up and take. Then again, not everyone can
have leadership. In order to have leadership, you must act in certain ways to acquire the goal of
leadership. Leadership is more than just leading people to achieve certain goals. It's the way you
approach the person you are trying to lead. Moreover, many people these days don't think that having
leadership is important, or they think having leadership just means to lead people. Well, they are
wrong. Leadership is much more than being a leader. You can't just decide one day that youwant to
have leadership. Youneed to give yourself time to have leadership. Leadership does not come in the
blink of an eye. It takes time to attain...show more content...
A person that has leadership is always giving their best effort to anything they are doing. The
leader always wants to be a good influence. A person with leadership is someone that a kid or
grownup can look up to and say, "I want to follow in his/her path and I want to do the things they
do." If anyone is watching you they are going to try their best because they see you are giving one
hundred percent. Whether people realize it or not that effort being put into what you are doing
can really pay off. So the leader will show people that good work will pay off later in life. Now since
you are trying to be a good role model to the people, don't act inappropriately. Always pretend that
someone is watching everything you do so always try your very best.
Foremost, you will have an untroublesome temper if you have leadership. If one person does
something wrong; you need to be able to control it in a manageable way and not react without
thinking. If someone's temper is condensed and the person screams at anyone that does something
wrong people won't like you. They won't respect you and they won't listen to you. Show the kids
that you can keep your temper controllable, and be a good role model. Set boundaries for the kids.
Also, you need to be in control of situations. Don't, let situations get out of hand. You need to know
when enough is enough. As long as you show people that you aren't like that, respect will be shown.
If people see that you can't say no

your goal a commitment to excellence that will enable you to attain the success you seek". –Mario

Leadership is the process of motivating others to work to meet specific goals and objectives. A
leader motivates others to action. Thus, it is the motivation of others and their actions that defines a
successful leader. In other words, leadership is the art and science of getting others to perform and
achieve a vision. Therefore, leadership is not only reflected in performance, no matter how good
that performance is, but in accomplishment. As a leader one 's focus should be on accomplishing
that leadership goals, whether in a personal, community or charitable, business, political, or
industrial forum. In the business world, managers have a great responsibility of leading employees
working under them. In order to achieve successful leadership, a leader or a manager should possess
certain principles and essential skills.
This essay will firstly start by defining the key terms, leadership and motivation. Next the essay will
give a literature review and move on to analytically explore the leadership and motivation in cross
cultural experiences. In doing so, the motivational theories will be explained in a summarized
manner. Finally, the essay will be concluded with the findings from several different studies on
motivation and leadership.

As John Quincy Adams said, "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more
and become more, you are a leader." When people think of a leader they might think of the
president of the United States or, for sports, a quarterback. Everyone knows that a leader has to
know how to lead people to the goal, whether its being a successful businessman or winning the
super bowl. However, people have different opinions on what qualities a leader has to have. Some
people say a leader needs to be determined; others say leaders need to be honest. There are many

that criticize you when you become a leader. Although people have different opinions on what a
leader qualities a leader needs to have, they are all right. I interviewed a few people and asked,
"What qualities do you think a leader should have?" One person said a leader needs to be
ambitious and determined. The leader must want to make their company or team successful and
be willing to do many things to succeed. Another person said a leader needs to be honest and
have integrity. A leader can not lie about what they did because it might have a negative affect on
the organization. I also quoted one of the people I interviewed, "A leader must be able to do what
he is ordering other people to do." A leader must be able to do what they guide other people
because it helps with the experience. Lou Tzu once said, "To lead the people walk behind them."
Leaders must not only do what they think is right but also take advice from their own workers.
They can also learn from how their workers work the best by helping out around the company with
the workers. All of these qualities can be part of being of a leader. A leader also needs to be a

7. What Makes A Good Leader
What qualities make a good leader? You can ask a hundred different people, and you will get a
hundred different answers. A good leader is someone who accomplishes the mission, has the
respect of their subordinates, and makes the difficult decisions when needed. For me, I believe that
a great leader needs to have a variety of qualities, but most importantly a sense of fairness, hard
work/care, and common consideration for others. Different experiences throughout my life and time
at West Point have lead me to believe that these three tenants are what are most needed for a great
leader. In terms of a leader's moral character, common consideration has the greatest influence on the
success of a leader, because without common consideration, a...show more content...
There are numerous occasions at West Point where I have seen individuals dole out unequal
shares of duties or rewards based on their personal feelings towards the recipients. Fairness and
impartiality are fundamental traits in good officers. If a leader singles out an individual for
either unfair rewards or punishments, it signals to the unit that there are other necessary factors
needed other than hard work to get ahead, such as cozying up to the platoon leader to get the good
assignments. Soldiers need to know that assignments or tasks they are assigned are either given
through merit, or are given equally to all soldiers in the unit. Unfair treatment is a quick way for
soldiers to drift away from the task at hand and instead focus on getting into the good graces of
the leader, leaving the unit less cohesive and the mission unaccomplished. I have witness firsthand
here at West Point many unfair decisions that were made solely out of how much someone liked
or hated the person they were dealing with. One such example that comes to mind is when one
cadet was given preferential treatment and allowed to get off morning workouts, while other cadets
had to continue. The physical development staff of my company forces any cadet with an APFT
score of less than 260 to show up to morning workouts on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each
week. These cadets are given the opportunity to stop attending workouts by scoring above a 270 on a
diagnostic APFT conducted once a month.

8. The Role Of A Leader Essay
The role of a leader is often seen as to lead. However, there are many ways and styles that can be
adopted by a leader, Until recently a manager was seen as a leader, but there is an increasing
differentiation made in the commercial world between a manager and a leader. Therefore, in this
paper there will be the aim of defining what a leader is, how they may be effective and how skills
may be developed by a potential leader. Webster's English Dictionary defines a leader as "One
who, or that which, leads or conducts; a guide; a conductor. Especially: (a) One who goes first. (b)
One having authority to direct; a chief; a commander" (Dictionary.com). This gives us the insight
into how leaders are seen today. In the past a leader and a manager were one and the same thing,
with the advent of scientific management and the development of the theories of Frederick Winslow
Taylor the job of the manager or leader was to gain the greatest value from the employees. In many
easy, this is still the role of the leader. However, the methods and perceptions regarding the way in
which this is achieved have changed greatly. The industrial revolution that embodies scientific
management saw standardisation in the use of procedures and tools, with the one best method being
dictated to the most suitable employee, who was expected to perform the task in their machine like
manner. The tasks were broken down into the smallest components which would acquire the issues

9. What is Leadership? Essay
What is leadership? When examining this question it is important to understand what it means to be
a leader within an organization. "Leadership is the influencing process of leaders and followers to
achieve organizational objectives through change (Achua, 2010, p. 6). Leaders serves people best
when they help them develop their own initiative and good judgment, enable them to grow, and help
them become better contributors (Thomas S Bateman, 2010, p. 66). Unlike management leadership
flows from the core of a personality and cannot be taught; although leadership can be learned and
may be enhanced through coaching and mentoring. Leadership involves unique processes that are

Yet, many leaders say the exact opposite believing leaders are mostly born. Executives who believe
that leaders are born, give less attention to leader development, both their personal development as
well the development of those they lead. Instead they are focused on selecting leaders with the "right
stuff", and expecting that those leaders' natural abilities will mean organizational success. Research
has shown clearly that extroverts have greater leadership potential than introverts. Extroversion is
only an–in born leadership advantage if one also learns and develops effective communication skills.
(Shane, 2010, pp. 17–120).
Many believe that leadership –whatever form it takes–cannot be taught and that leaders are born not
made. Elizabeth Winslow, director of the Cohen leadership development program at Tuck–trucking
Company, has no trucks with the mentality of "Leadership can be taught," she insists, and anyone is
capable of showing leadership. It's all about learning when the step up and when to let others step
up." However, business author Henry Mintzberg thinks leadership –like management– can't be
taught. Leadership is "earned" by gaining the respect of others at work, he said, and schools that
clam to teach leadership are "dishonest". Winslow, unsurprisingly, would beg to differ but admits
even some of her student's starts off skeptically. "We have to convince them that everyone is capable

10. What is Leadership? Essay
Leadership is a difficult word to define and according to the Miriam–Webster Dictionary leadership
is the "office or position of a leader" (Miriam–Webster, 2010). This definition is definitely not one
that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is "the ability
someone has to motivate and empower others to achieve a goal." Some may add to this definition,
others may discard it altogether and have a completely different definition. In the end, leadership
takes on many different forms depending on who is doing the defining and we end up asking
ourselves, what is leadership and why do we care? J. Thomas Wren (1995) put together a book to
help leaders define leadership for themselves. The Leader's...show more content...
As Gardner (1990) points out "Most men and women go through their lives using no more than a
fraction – usually a rather small fraction – of the potentialities within them" (p. 7). I happen to agree
with Gardner on this point. As a teacher you see numerous children who, with the proper training,
could be very great, positive leaders; yet due to their home situation or lack of self–confidence these
children grow up never knowing they have that possibility inside them. "We can do better. Much,
much better" (Gardner, 1990 p. 7). Along with Gardner (1990) Wren introduces Burns (1978)
who wrote The Crisis of Leadership. Initially, I thought a crisis in leadership was happening today
because according to Burns (1978) "One of the most universal cravings of our time is a hunger
for compelling and creative leadership" (p. 8). However, we need to keep in mind that Burns
wrote about this in 1978. So leadership and those who lead have been having problems for a
number of decades. "If we know all too much about our leader, we know far too little about
leadership" (Burns, 1978 p. 9). What Burns was trying to bring to the forefront was the idea that
we, as a public, know far too much about the personal lives of our leaders. The media has been able
to bring personal situations into our homes that we would not otherwise be

What is Leadership?
Leadership is defined as the position of a leader, the ability to lead. I assure you it is much more then
that. Being a leader is not easy, I have learned from personal experience. Being a captain of a
football team is hard work. It takes guts to stand up and be a leader. Leadership is respect. Respect by
others. You can't force people to respect you; you've got to earn it. A good leader earns respect
from his, or her, peers. They know he is their leader and when he tells them to do something, they
do it, and they respect his position. A captain deserves respect from his teammates. The respect your

When he yells, he strikes fear into his comrades. Along with leading by example, a captain should
be able to speak up. When a teammate is harming the team he should speak up and let them know
to stop what they are doing or to leave. A leader shouldn't be quite and expect people to listen and
follow them, he needs to speak up and take action.
Finally, Leadership is work. A leader works harder than anyone else and they know they need to
do so. A captain knows that he has to push himself to work above everyone else. He should run
faster, hit harder, and block better than anyone else on the team. If a captain works harder than
anyone else, then everything comes together. He earns respect; he takes responsibility, and leads
by example. Believe me, being a leader is not an easy job. If you can accomplish all these things
then you can be a true leader. From my own experience, being a captain is not easy. Even I
struggle with these qualities. The pressure of being a leader of is overwhelming, and takes hard
work to accomplish. "Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is
the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile," by Vince

about what makes a leader may be what continues to keep women down. At a young age, men are
often taught to be "confident, assertive and self–promoting," while women are discouraged from
those traits – the very characteristics we often value in leadership. In contrast, women tend to
undersell their achievements and provide a more nurturing role in the workplace, even when it is
inappropriate. If a woman becomes a mother, it "triggers powerful negative competence and
commitment assumptions" according to a study referenced within Barriers and Bias. Accordingly,
after giving birth women see a 4% decrease in earnings per child. Meanwhile men actually thrive in
fatherhood, with an average 6% earnings increase. The confidence gap, which has been a discussion
for years, contributes to this divide in the workforce. This inequality contributes to the damage that is
committed.
When men and women are treated differently, it is unethical, especially when they perform the same
tasks, which require the application of the same skills, knowledge and experience. Gender
inequality reflects a greater level of significance ethically as it influences women's motivation to
perform tasks in a proper way. Ashley Wietsma discusses how women's experiences regarding
gender inequality in the workplace are generally based on several factors including lower job
security, lower wages compared to men, lack of respect, lack of benefits, or inadequate benefits, and
vulnerability to sexual harassment and

My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect
others, and of course, lead by example. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they
are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to
convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being
followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in their followers to have faith in you, in order to
be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. If you have the

handle the situation at hand. More than anything else, I believe as a leader it is always important
to have great social skills in order to be communicative with clarity and objectiveness, and to have
a good relationship with the ones I lead. As a leader, I understand the meaning of recognition and
praise when one is doing a good job, which too is significantly important. A leader is not always
the first to have an idea, but should be the one who is always seeking out new solutions. One way
of being a productive leader is discovering new ways to accomplish a set of tasks while
maintaining a positive attitude. If a soldier is demonstrating a bad attitude because he feels that
he can not accomplish a task then my job as a leader, would be to steadily encourage that soldier
to work at being all that he can be. A leader to me, does not need to always know the answer, but
believes it to be important to have the initiative to make an answer appear. One form of bad
leadership would be an NCO performing or demonstrating a task that he knows nothing about in
front of his soldiers. In the result of the NCO not performing or demonstrating the task at hand
correctly, the soldiers then become incapable of knowing the proper ways of that task. However, if

Being a leader can be challenging, especially if you do not know how to adjust your leadership
techniques based on the situation. Things that might be perfect in one case, can be absolutely
disastrous in another. The ability to listen, watch and adjust according to the situation are some of
the qualities that define a good leader. I really enjoyed watching the video, where Tom Peters was
talking about the importance of listening. I agree, that as a manager you should be open to
conversations with subordinates and peers, and should be open–minded in that matter. As it was
mentioned in the video and throughout the discussion board interactions, a lot of people are
unable to listen to others, and usually intervene within the first 20 seconds. The ability to listen is
something that can be developed. Some leaders have the idea in their head, and are unable to
change their mind. It does not matter how many people they talk to, they just cannot accept a
different view, or look at the situation from a different angle. They can hear, but do not actually
listen. We watched a lot of interesting videos of leaders and professors talking about the biggest
mistakes that leaders can make. One thing that most of them mentioned is the importance of living
up to the same moral values that they propose to subordinates. It is important to lead "from the
front", being a role model for the people who work for you. This type of leaders have significantly
more chances to build a team, where people

People requires good leadership skills at personal, professional and social level. Personal
leadership helps us to determine our desires, strengths and abilities. It means Knowing what we
want out of life; knowing what success is for us; what are our goals and how to achieve those
goals regardless of what other people think, say, or do. Personal leadership helps us to make our

in companies, management stresses more on decision– making skills. They believe a timely and
smart decision will help their company to succeed. They forget that implementation of those
decisions are as important as making those decision. Without a proper implementation , there will

What is a leader? When thinking of the answer to this question, one might merely reflect on the
qualities that a leader bestow. Qualities such as courage, commitment, charisma and character. When
imagining the faces of our great historical leaders, one might imagine, Nelson Mandela, The
Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., PresidentBarack Obama or even Oprah. The point being,
when imagining leaders, many tend to look upon the faces of those in political, religious and
business environments and the roles they execute in their settings. Very rarely do individuals tend to
recall those who play a role behind the scenes away from work. The parent(s). Many forget that
leadership begins at home.
The most influential time of an individual falls between birth and 5 years old. This makes the
parent(s) the most influential person in every individual's life. Early Psychologists such as Erik
Erickson (1963), Jean Paiget (1967) and Abraham Maslow (1970) all stressed the extreme need an
infant and toddler have for attachment and environmental support. Everything ranging from the type
of housing, presence of the parent(s) and the living lifestyle can affect the individual's mental growth
and capacity for change. Providing a physically and emotionally healthy, and supportive environment
will ensure that the child's basic needs will be met.

But, really, what makes a leader? Is it the base skillset, a certain kind of mind attuned to the goals

leadership, especially on their college campuses, there are many images that could possibly come up
for them–– they could imagine their resident assistants, stern–faced and cold–hearted in their
imaginations, or maybe the presidents of organizations, too chipper and too pushy. But who else do
they think of? Do they think of Greek organization executive board members? Do they think of
football players? Do they think of the graduate students and professionals they interact with? Do they
think of themselves? In this paper, I will introduce not only the topic of men and masculinities in
collegiate leadership (and what all that means), but also explain the separate identities of "male" and

intersections of identities (such as LGBT+ identity or religious identity, among others), and make

18. What Makes A Leader A Good Leader? Essay
What makes a leader a good leader? If being a leader was an easy task, then anyone would become a
leader. In order for an individual to rise above others and become a good leader, they need to
acquire a few personal skills and characteristics. A common belief is that a good leader must have
high intellectual abilities and technical skills in order to be successful. However; according to
Daniel Goleman, there is a good relationship between the emotional intelligence of a leader and the
effectiveness of their leading (Goleman). A good leader needs to have a high degree of
self–awareness, he/she needs to be self–regulated and have empathy. Along with these
characteristics, I also believe that a leader needs to be trust worthy and have the skills to make the
followers feel safe. There are several different definitions.
The dictionary defines Leadership as "The capacity or ability to lead" or "Guidance; Direction".
Many people think it is simply about being successful, but it comes down to more than that. Leaders
are those people that use their skills in leadership to make a difference. Leadership is a quality
hidden in the personality of a human being. Human personality is very complex and it is very
difficult to grade individuals according to one's personality. Leadership, on the other hand, depends
on the organic structure of the personality, which includes experience, skill, responsibility,
intelligence, power of organizing people and social interaction.

characteristics of a leader is their imagination. P2: Some people think the most important attribute of
a leader is knowledge. в€
Ň‘ I agree with both positions since some leaders are effective based on
their comprehensive knowledge of their job, whereas other leaders are extremely effective based on
their extra ordinary imagination. Is it more important for a leader to have imagination or
knowledge? A person that possesses an imagination can be exposed to a wider world of wisdom.
People that have knowledge are restricted by the amount of information they know; where as people
with imaginations are limitless. Imagination is more valuable to leadership than knowledge since the
human memory is limited to the information that is learned. Without believing something is possible
advancement cannot happen, imagination can lead to discovery. Knowledge is what one's
imagination must be based on. The accumulation of one's memories is the data that one works with
to enriched their imagination. Imagination American Heritage Dictionary states that imagination
involves "forming a mental concept of what is not actually present to the senses." As a leader
