I have learned several new technologies from creating this product:
- Photography equipment like DSLR cameras, strobes, and soft boxes to create professional-looking photos for the magazine. Setting the camera on manual and adjusting lighting was new.
- Using Apple computers and their operating system instead of PCs, which took adjustment. Software like Photoshop, InDesign, and WordPress to design the magazine, learn skills like masking, editing photos, and laying out text.
- Gaining experience with these tools has expanded my technical skills in areas that were new to me like photography, Mac computers, and design software applications.

Question 6 evaluation
1. Question 6
What have you learnt about
technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
2. Hardware
Hardware is equipment I’ve used:
-Camera DSLR
-Light – standard strobes
-iMac – Apple
- SD card
- Keyboard/Mouse
- X-serve – server Apple mac
- HRDS network
3. Camera and photography kit
• To shoot the subjects of my photos for my cover.
Contents page and article I used a Nikon D3100
camera. Which is a digital SLR. I used this on a
manual setting so I could adjust the focus and light
to how I wanted, the aperture was on f11 and the
shutter speed 1/300th.
• I used a horseshoe flash trigger for the light to look
bright, Shiny and professional. An infa-red signal is
sent to a strobe flash, which triggers the flash in sync
with the camera shutter. The speed was set to
1/300th sec to match strobe speeds.
• Hemisphere 300-strobe flash was used to adjust the
output of light. The modeling light was on and the
dial on the back adjusted the output. Auxiliary lights
were set to slave and they were triggered in sync
with the built in light sensor.
4. • Soft boxes were used to disperse the
light and give a softer, rounder light
on the subject. I used two when
shooting my subject.
• A backdrop is lit with a further two strobes on full
power to create a high exposure, white background
which was easy to mask out further along in the
process of editing the process.
-I used this equipment to create bright, professional
photos which I then used in creating my magazine.
5. Apple Mac and equipment
• I used an Apple mac to complete all my work for
this coursework. They’re created by the highly
popular company: http://www.apple.com/ .
Before this project I had never used a mac before,
and didn’t realise they were so different to PC’s
so it took time to get used to. I have learnt things
as simple as logging off and figuring out the
differences between a Mac and a PC.
6. Software
Software is the systems I’ve used on the computer:
-Adobe Photoshop CS5
-Adobe InDesign
-Wordpress.com
-Firefox
-OSX – Operating system
-Powerpoint
-Youtube
-Slideshare
7. Photoshop
• Photoshop was the software that created my
magazine cover, contents page and article on.
I used version CS5 which is a fairly recent
version, created in 2011. Before my
coursework I hadn’t used Photoshop much at
all so I had to adapt to it and learn how to use
it. Some examples of things I learnt before the
preliminary task were masking using the
magnetic tool, creating shapes and changing
fonts.
8. • After the preliminary task I had more time to
experiment with Photoshop and develop my skills. I
learnt more things such as how to edit out a
background, crop a photo and edit the saturation,
contrast and brightness of photos.
• I used In-design to add my text on to my article an
contents page as it was an easier software to play
around with the text, it’s position, fonts and font
sizes. I positioned my text in my article with indesign,
and the text and page numbers in my contents page.
