The History of Aerial Flight
On August 17th, 1917, General Jan Christian Smuts, of the Royal Flying Corps, captured the significance that aeroplanes would play not just as an
auxiliary force, but a new form of warfare:
There is absolutely no limit to the scale of its future independent war use. And the day may not be far off when aerial operations with their devastation
of enemy lands and destruction of industries and populous centres on a vast scale may become one of the principal operations of war, to which the
older forms of military and naval operations may become secondary and subordinate.
It was upon this recommendation in a report written to the Air Ministry and the Air Staff to combine the two fronts of Britain's aerial presence, to
create a single independent military branch, the Royal Air Force. On April 1st, 1918 the Royal Air Force was formed by an Act of Parliament, and
would be the only thing that stood between them and the Nazi Luftwaffe.
The history of aerial flight is often looked at from the perspective of the great moments, from the first flight of the Wright Brothers in 1903, to the
Battle of Britain, but many less than stellar moments have perhaps shaped the formation of aviation in ways that may have been overlooked.
Heavier–than–air flight, as it were, was in its infancy of development in Britain, due to stringent financials and unwilling risk takers. For instance, the
Wright Brothers were turned away from England because the Treasury was unwilling to financially back the

The Pros And Cons Of The Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts were a series of laws passed by British Parliament in 1774 with the intent to suppress the colonial Boston. The series of laws
closed the ports and placed it under martial law. The Sons of Liberty were a group of colonial protestors which issues a call for a boycott.
Merchant communities were skeptical to participate unless everyone could mutually agree on terms and means to enforce the provisions. Pressure
from the groups was quickly mounting, colonial legislatures empowered delegates to attend a Continental Congress where they would set up terms
for a boycott. Philadelphia September 5, 1774, The Congress first met. With delegates representing each of the 13 colonies except for Georgia. By
the Next month, Congress had come up with a Plan. October 20, 1774, The Articles of Association were adopted by Congress. The Articles of
Association stated that if the Intolerable Acts were not repealed by December 1, 1774, the colonies began a boycott of British goods. Inside the
Articles, there were outlined plans for an embargo on exports if the Acts were not repealed before September 10, 1775. Within the Articles of
Association were fourteen different articles outline different topics. The article that affects Theater is Article 8 which states "and will discountenance
and discourage every species of extravagance and dissipation, especially all horse–racing, and all kinds of games, cockfighting, exhibitions of shews,

Battle of Vimy Ridge
Many countries have tried but failed to capture this area. Both French and British armies tired but failed the Germans were too strong. This area
was known as Vimy Ridge, which has many high hills and was located in France. The Germans had captured this area since September 1914, the
Germans started to build artillery proof bunkers and trenches. Germanys had the advantage in every battle; Germanys had their bases on top of the
long hills. Which lead them to look down on their enemies, which was easier for Germanys to kill their target. After countries failing to capture Vimy
Ridge, Canada decided they were going to attempt to fight for Vimy Ridge. For the first time Britain asked for generals to lead Canada to victory for the
battle of Vimy Ridge. Sir Julian Byng and Major Arthur Currie were asked to lead the Canadian Military to win the battle of Vimy Ridge. After
months of practicing a strategy Canada was ready. April 1917, Canada went to battle with Germany for Vimy Ridge. This became one of the most
devastating battles В¬in Canadian history. Canadians should remember that Vimy Ridge was not their triumph alone. British artillery and the elite 51st
Highland Division helped make victory possible (Desmond Morton, Significance of Vimy Ridge). Vimy Ridge is considered a defining moment in
Canadian history because, it was Canada's first time using a general to plan tactics and strategy's, Canada was the only country that succeeded on
capturing Vimy Ridge, lastly all Canadian

Who Is To Blame For The American Revolution
In battling the British in the Revolutionary War, the American rebels did just as the great French military and political leader, Napoleon Bonaparte
advised, "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake". Though there were a great deal of missed opportunities and misguided
actions taken by both sides of this war, none were as great as those by the ministers in London and British Generals Howe and Burgoyne. However,
of these three, one held a great deal of responsibility for Britain's failure to suppress the American rebels by 1777. This person was indeed, General
Howe. General Howe is to blame for this failure because of all of the three listed, he was the most lethargic, the most eager to surrender, and the
one who failed to support his comrades. Some may claim that is was General Burgoyne's responsibility due to his famous loss at Saratoga, New
York. However, as will be stated later, that failure will also ultimately fall at the hands of General Howe. While the ministers in London acted out of
their desire for authority over the colonies with little knowledge of the situation in America, they are still not hold to most blame of the three.
General Howe holds this title because as it is known, wars are rarely determined by a single event as they are won through the combined effect of a
series of events. Before 1777, there were two main turning points in the War which led to this failure of defeat the Americans by this time. The first is

What 's A Name?
What's in a name?
As you stroll around the streets of Nelson, do we ever look up at the blue signs, wondering the stories behind these names that roll off your tongue so
everyday? Do you stop to picture Nelson, 170 years ago, imagining the people that walk the same path to work as you everyday, down Trafalgar
Street? These steps that the first settlers of Nelson made, have shaped our city, creating the perfect base for following generations to make change
upon. As generations have occupied Nelson, the names of these streets have developed with our culture, creating change for the future; however, as
our society has changed, do the street names lose value? Do you walk down the street, forgetting who walked before you and the stories in their
footprints? Does this leave the importance of our street names left behind, as our advances in society take over?
The New Zealand Company landed on Fifeshire, on February 1, 1841; led by Captain Arthur Wakefield, who was followed by many English settlers,
escaping the economic conditions of their European nation, looking for a fresh start. The new emigrants began to settle into their new country, with the
continual stream of immigrants growing Nelson's population steadily, and with that came a new town to build. The settlement was based around
Church Hill, where the Nelson Cathedral stands today, with Wakefield losing no time in getting his surveyors and labourers to work; marking out the
sections and streets of the newly formed town.

Essay on Battle of Saratoga
Battle of Saratoga
During the time of the American Revolution, there were many battles that took place and affected the Revolution. One battle though, made a huge
impact on the American Revolution. The Battle of Saratoga proved that the disadvantaged and weaker American forces were strong enough to
overpower the British forces. It all started when General John Burgoyne needed to get his forces to Albany. He and his army headed across the Hudson
River, where they would then take a road south–ward to Albany. Burgoyne knew the enemy (American forces) were in the area, but he did not know of
their exact location. Leading to the Battles of Bemis Heights and Freeman's Farm, the Battle of Saratoga became known as a highly significant battle ...

Freeman was a Loyalist who had earlier left for Canada. After about three hours of battle, the Americans ran out of ammunition, making them have to
retreat. The British then claimed victory at Freeman's Farm.
Freeman's Farm was located on the west side bank of the Hudson River. It was right near Bemis Heights, making it easy for people to build
fortifications in the woods and high outcroppings. It was located a few miles away from Burgoyne's destination of Albany. It was a perfect location
for an army to fight and keep themselves in somewhat of an alright sanctuary. During the Battle, both sides used different tactics and strategies.
Burgoyne decided to go with a risky strategy of dividing his army into three columns, two towards Bemis Heights and one to follow the road that
paralleled the Hudson. The American forces (led by Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold) placed expert riflemen (led by Daniel Morgan) in charge of
taking out the left flank of the British (led by Simon Frasier). This strategy worked well for the Americans, of course until they ran out of
ammunition. The battle (of Freeman's Farm) was officially ended when Burgoyne heard word from Sir Henry Clinton. Clinton was getting ready to
leave New York City and come assist Burgoyne with the continuous battles. So, he told Burgoyne to hold back and wait for him to get there before he
attacked the Americans again. Burgoyne gave up his plan for attack

The Human Rights Act By Viscount Sankey Essay
Decades before the implementation of the Human Rights Act , Viscount Sankey's prose in Woolmington v DPP alluded to the presumption of
innocence as the "one golden thread" which runs through the web of English criminal law . He essentially establishes that the legal burden of proving
the defendant's guilt lies with the prosecution . This principle is arguably underlying in every jurisdiction that respects ones right to a fair trial and is
the foundation of the criminal law. There are two important themes that must be discussed relating to the principles set out in Woolmington: Firstly, in
this case it was acknowledged that there can be instances where a reverse burden of proof is applied and that in fact, the onus is on the defendant to
prove his innocence rather than for the prosecution to prove his guilt. Secondly, despite some departure from the Woolmington principle, it does not
inevitably necessitate that the law has been unfaithful to its underlying rationale. A common deduction of the Woolmington principle is that Sankey, in
his judgement, is ambiguous and left too much open to interpretation. Furthermore, it has been argued by Adrian Zuckerman that the way in which
something is written can in fact lead to a justified imposition of a legal burden on the defendant and that the accused will only have to prove their
innocence by disclosing an onerous burden in situations where legislation expressly commands them to. Article 6(2) of the ECHR states: "Everyone

Essay on Success: You can do it!
You can do it!–SUCCESS– Success is to fulfil a goal that you have set for yourself. Achievement of success involves five components: realisation,
confidence, motivation, action and perseverance. Step one is to realise your goal and how to achieve it. Step two is to have the confidence to take
the steps towards your goal. Step three is to find motivation to keep you on the path towards you goal. Step four is action, the first physical step
you take in the process for success. Step five is perseverance. On the road to success, you will most definitely come to setbacks and struggles. The
only way to conquer those things and achieve your goal is to have strong perseverance. As David Brink said, "A successful person is one who...

makes you strive for your goal. My motivations are to: become famous, be able to live comfortably, and to be able to raise a family. I will hold
onto these things and will keep moving towards success. Nelson struggled with his motivation, "I felt impressed with a feeling that I should never
rise in my profession. My mind was staggered with the view of the difficulties I had to surmount and the little interest [influential friends] I
possessed. I could discover no means of reaching the object of my ambition. After a long and gloomy reverie in which I almost wished myself
overboard, a sudden glow of patriotism was kindled within me and presented my king and country as my patron. 'Well then,' I exclaimed, 'I will be a
hero and confiding in providence I will brave every danger.'" He found his motivation to be patriotism to his country to be known as a hero. Step 4 –
Action Action is the first physical step you will take in success. Action is bringing together realisation, confidence and motivation. This is when all
your planning comes together you start actually doing the things you need to get to your goal: putting your plan into action. I got into a group where

1. What problems does Robin Hood have? What issues need to be addressed? 2. Do Robin Hood and the Merrymen need a new mission? new
objectives? a new strategy?
In the second year of the insurrection against the Sheriff of Nottingham, the tide of events is turning against Robin Hood and his men. The revolt,
which began as a personal crusade inspired by anger, is feeling the consequences of not having a long term strategy or plan. In order to be successful,
key changes are necessary for Robin Hood and the Merrymen.
Robin Hood faces a myriad of problems that can potentially influence the changes that are crucial for Robin's organization, as well as affect the
effectiveness of the insurrection. As the CEO of his organization, Robin has the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With no cash inflows, Robin will quickly consume his financial reserves and will not be able to purchase food, pay his men, or continue to outfit and
provision the band. Consequently, this will leave Robin Hood and his band susceptible to attacks from a Sheriff that is getting stronger, recruiting
more men, and receiving financial backing. Therefore, in order for the revolt to succeed, Robin Hood and the Merrymen do need to establish a new
mission, new objectives, and a new strategy to achieve their goals.
3. What strategic options does Robin Hood have? Is continuing with the present strategy an option or is the present strategy obsolete?
The potential strategic options of Robin Hood are to continue on with no major changes, to institute a fixed transit tax, to pursue geographic
expansion, to try to kill the Sheriff, or to accept the barons' offer. While continuing with the present strategy and "stealing from the rich to give to the
poor" is a viable option, it has more future negative consequences than positive ones. The mere fact that the Merrymen are growing at such a fast pace
suggests that the present strategy is beginning to be obsolete, and furthermore, travelers are wiser and are avoiding Sherwood Forest altogether. This
means that Robin Hood's and the band's revenue will decrease and they will not be able to continue to operate and keep the insurrection alive.

The Boys Who Challenged Hitler is a book about a group of teenage boys who resisted Hitler. When Germany wanted to take over Norway and
Denmark, Denmark gave in immediately. Norway decided to fight. They fought for two long months and they fought hard, but they lost. When the
Nazi soldiers first occupied Denmark, people weren't too happy. But they could do nothing about it. So they sang Danish songs and sold Danish
emblems to say that they were still a country.

On May 6, 1942, waitress Elsa Ottesen at Cafe Holle in downtown Aalborg, saw two teenage boys enter the restaurant, walking briskly. Heads down,
they made a beeline for the coat closet and emerged from it a very short time later. Then they strode straight out of the restaurant, without ordering a
single thing. A few minutes later, a German officer dining at the cafe, discovered that his gun was missing. He angrily told the restaurant staff and
Mrs. Ottesen remembered the two boys who had entered the closet earlier. Mrs. Ottesen gave a detailed statement to the police. She thought she could
recognize them if she saw them again. Who were the boys? I think you already guessed. Knud and Jens Pedersen
Two days later, Mrs. Ottesen saw the boys again. She alerted the police and an officer started following them. He asked for their identification cards.
They gave the officer the cards and the officer made them go back to their house–which was a monastery as their father was a priest. Knud and Jens's
parents weren't home. More police arrived on scene. "Where are the weapons?" one police officer asked. Jens led the police straight to the cellar
where they kept the weapons. Soon, all the boys were arrested. Each was brought to the police station and interrogated separately. This way it was

Her next husband was Henry Plantagenet, heir to the English thrown. They had fallen deeply in love, despite the fact that Eleanor was a full twelve
years older than Henry. After only six weeks since the annulment had been granted between Eleanor and Louis VII, she got married with Henry at
Bordeaux. When Henry was appointed King of England at the Westminister Abbey, Eleanor was appointed Queen of England.
Though from this point on is considered by most people to be the time when Eleanor had acquired an ambition to rule and the power to make that
possible, it didn't really start until the two have had their second child.
Eleanor and Henry's first child, a son called William, had died at an early age. After William, Eleanor gave birth to eight more children. In order from
eldest to youngest, they were:
Matilda, Henry, Richard, Geoffrey, John, Eleanor, and Joanna. Richard was Eleanor's favorite child, while John was Henry's favorite. The royal

What Strategic Elements Of The 1777 Campaign Plan
In the fall of 1776 the British Empire stood on the edge of victory, Britain's New York campaign left the Continental Army in disarray and on the edge
of extinction. The 1777 campaign, though not fully realized by the British crown, represented the best and last chance to suppress the American
Rebellion before the rebellion transformed into a world war and went beyond the British ability to win. Unfortunately for the British, their senior
commanders in the New World, Sir William Howe and John Burgoyne, viewed the war through a flawed operational lens and saw the American
struggle for independence as an opportunity to enhance their standing and future in the British Empirical system. British American Secretary Lord

With his ends clearly stated, he also articulated effective ways to achieve his objectives. He planned to divide his army into four distinct corps to

commanded by MAJ General Charles Cornwallis to "cover New Jersey and contain Washington's Continental Army". He also wanted to leave
5,000 soldiers to defend New York City. The third Corp, another 10,000 soldiers under the Command of MAJ General Henry Clinton would march
from Rhode Island to Albany to "junction" with Howe's Corp of 10,000 soldiers and the Canadian army. Howe's Corp would fight their way up the
Hudson from New York and the Canadian army would fight their way down the Hudson from Canada. Howe's means to execute his plan provided
the strategic risk. In the same letter he outlined his plan; he also requested 15,000 additional soldiers to achieve his plan's objectives. In November
1777, neither Howe nor the British Empire had 15,000 additional soldiers available. The request came as a shock to Germain, who for political
reasons declined to send the request to Parliament. Howe only received 6,000 additional soldiers for his 1777 campaign. Unbeknownst to Howe, his
plan dovetailed perfectly with Burgoyne's plan published in the spring of 1776. Burgoyne returned to England to personally promote the plan to the

from the U.S. 7th Army, it discussed the enemy situation facing both Patton and Montgomery, and shows why Patton chose to take Palermo before
pressing towards Messina. The Seventh Army's G–2 Periodic Report stated:

British Military Force Analysis
The sheer supremacy of the British military force was more than capable of expeditiously suppressing an amateur rebellion and successfully restoring
the insurgent colonies to their innate allegiance. Until Washington finally adopted a defensive strategy at the fortress of Harlem Heights, the British
undoubtedly had a significant military leverage over the Americans; therefore, if Lord Germain's [Germain] strategy were properly employed, the
British should have won. Germain informed General William Howe [Howe], and subsequently General Henry Clinton [Clinton], of his plan in which
"a decisive blow had to be delivered" before any reconciliation so that the "overwhelming force" would shock "the rebels into recognizing the futility of
their cause." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only reason the Continental Army was spared was because of Howe's secret "hopes of negotiating a peaceful end to the rebellion." He was also so
sure of the fact that "British victory was inevitable, which in turn meant that a more limited strategy was wholly adequate." By delaying the process of
suppression, the Continental Army gradually gained experience and courage. Washington also learned from his mistakes in the Battle of New York and
ignored his "aggressive military instincts;" he eventually put aside his "honor–driven character" to adopt a new attitude towards his definition of a
victory. "Though it ran counter to all his instincts, he now realized that his goal was not to win the war but rather not to lose it," and thus he embraced
a defensive strategy in the fortress of Harlem Heights. However, before this pivotal moment in history, Howe could have and probably should have
listened to Clinton in targeting the Continental Army at King's Bridge." However, "Howe wanted his American campaign to be a more measured

exactly what kind of trouble they would get into if any code name was given away and most importantly, the trust they would break from their

Essay about Robin Hood Case
1)What problems does Robin Hood have? What issues need to be addressed?
There are several key issues that Robin Hood has. The 1st problem addressed in the reading is the growing size of the Merrymen. Resources are
becoming scarce to sustain the large size of the band. He is also having problems with discipline within in the band. Another issue is that travelers are
starting to avoid the forest for fear of being robbed, which in turn has caused a decline in the Merrymen's revenue stream. The last issue Robin Hood
faces is the increasing power of the sheriff. Even while Robin Hood and his Merrymen have undermined the sheriff for the last year he has gotten
stronger and more organized.
2)Do Robin Hood and the Merrymen need a new mission? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
4)What strategy do you recommend to Robin Hood to deal with the problems and issues he confronts?
The strategy that I recommend is that he immediately implements a larger area from which to loot if he wants to sustain his group of Merrymen. Scout
the routes that the rich travelers are taking and rob them there. This will generate more revenue to continue to feed the Merrymen.
5)Why not try to end the campaign by killing the sheriff?
While this would satisfy Robin personally, this would not provide a true solution to what the Merrymen seek. After the sheriff is dead there would be
another person there to take his place that would continue to the same thing.
6)What are the advantages and disadvantages of accepting the offer of the barons to assist in securing King Richard's release from prison?
Advantages
–Amnesty if successful
–Fair Ruler back in place
–Provides an end to the campaign
Disadvantages

7)What action plan do you recommend to Robin?
The ultimate goal of the Merrymen is to rid Nottingham of the crooked Sheriff. The only plan that will ultimately do this is to join with the Barons

The Journal of Denton Lloyd
Walking From Boston to New York I thought that we would never win the battle against the British. I couldn't believe that I was going to go to war
with the British. The British had so much more experience than we did, There were some people who didn't even have one bit of experience with
weapons. Surely, I was nervous about going to battle. The whole time getting ready I thought about how much I'd miss my wife and our three children
Lilia, Bethany, and Lucas. I thought to myself one day I won't have to write to them, I can see them and tell them stories about the war. Right now all I

As winter came the weather became more bitter. We were all freezing, some soldiers even went back home. When we reached Pennsylvania we
only had about a few thousand men. We were all cold, our clothes were ripped and some had barely any clothing on them. Washington reported the
remaining of the troops. Washington had also reported for more troops Otherwise, Washington said "I think the game will be pretty well up." End of
1776 the British thought they have won the war. Howe the General of the British offered a peace treaty signing a promise saying "remain peaceful

After all, Washington knew he had to do something, he gathered all of us and read to us from Thomas Paine 'The Crisis'. "These are the times that try
men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it NOW,

The Kindertransport: Saving The Whole World
"Whosoever rescues a single soul is credited as though they had saved the whole world (Talmud)." Saving as little as one life, is much greater than
saving none at all. The Kindertransport did not save one, but somewhere near 10,000 souls from crucial conditions under Hitler's Nazi Germany.
Through these acts, the world was shown that some humanity does, in fact, still exist.
Kindertransport was the name given to the to the efforts made by the British government a year before the outbreak of WWII. It was an attempt to
remove children from an increasingly perilous situation. Through this program they saved 10,000 children aging 1–17 and transported them to safety in

Penguin, 1997), 553 pp. In the chapter Kings, Parliament, and Inherited Rights, starts off with the quote about the revolution. The revolution was in the
mind and the hearts of people, a change in their religious sentiments of their duties and obligations. The evolution of the revolution began was an
argument over rights that changed into struggle for power of each party to assert their rights as it understood them, then afterward struggle for empire
as Americans began to conceive a more ambitious and independent course for themselves. Americans believe that legally of all parliamentary statutes
was measured against the constitution; on that basis, being unrepresented in Parliament, they denied the rights of the body to tax them directly
according to the principles of constitutional law. A particular act focused on in the chapter is the Stamp Act, which imposed a stamp tax ranging from
one shilling to six on various commercial and legal documents such as wills, mortgages, and college degrees, as well as on newspapers, almanacs,
calendars, pamphlets, playing cards and dice. Also the Trade and Navigation Acts was a parliamentary revenue raised in America would make England

Essay On John Andre
Throughout history, there are moments that become pivotal points for major outcomes. The capturing and hanging of John Andre was one of these
pivotal moments. A British Major who spied on the Americans and tried to close off the New England from the rest of the colonies, Andre was a
man willing to do anything for his country. John Andre was born on May 2, 1750 in London. He was the son of Huguenots. He attended the
University of Geneva in Switzerland where he studied mathematics and military drawing. He also had a fondness for the arts and took up ballroom
dancing and the flute. He was being groomed to take over his father's business, but when his father passed away, John took his inheritance and moved.

throughout these years and Andre asked Shippin for help to persuade Arnold to flip. Shippin and Arnold got to know each other and eventually

controlled the Hudson had the power as it traveled down to New York and was a clear line of trade and communication among the Americans. Arnold,

Essay On John Donne
John Donne was an English Poet, Priest and outsider. He was born into a devout catholic family in 1572 in London, however, he did not stay true to
his families Catholic beliefs. Donne grew up as a catholic in a rough period in England when the anti–Roman period was reaching new heights. This of
course caused problems for him until the 1590's when he returned to London from his studies abroad in Theological issues and converted to the
English church. During these early days of his life, Donne converted because his brother was imprisoned for being Catholic and later died in prison.
With Donne now in the English Church writing he soon became the secretary to Sir Thomas Egerton, Lord Keeper of the great seal. While for many
this would prove to be the beginning of a great career, it would soon end. This was because he secretly married the teen niece of Egerton, Ann
More, in 1601. He was then forced to move away to the countryside living in a poverty stricken lifestyle. Although having twelve kids and living in
poverty seems horrible, Donne still thrived in his poetry. According to Wendy Smith, " Poetry written during those years limns an ecstatic physical
and emotional union with an intelligent, passionate companion. Perhaps this blissful society of two was the home Donne had been looking for" (7).
However, his wife died and his poetry took another unexpected turn, as it became more dark and not as full of love. As the years went on Donne
slowly began to get sick more

War Memorial History
From the outset parish war memorial committees sent out requests to members of the public to nominate names for inclusion on the memorials. They
received these in writing from the next of kin, from descendants and, in some cases, from an informed member of the public (either privately or on
behalf of an organisation). They accepted evidence through word of mouth, from newspaper articles, church announcements and through door–to–door
enquiries. Some committees decided that only those born in a town or village would be commemorated; some opted for birth and/or residence at time
of death, whilst others allowed the names of anyone who had lived in the village at any time. Some, as in the case of Misterton, saw the addition of a

There were those who described it as evidence of a 'deplorable lack of interest by the general public in this worthy object.' When it was put on the
agenda for the Parish Council to discuss, the meeting had to be cancelled owing to the schoolroom having no heat and the likelihood of there being
no gas. For a time it looked as though there would be no resolution. Many felt this would leave Epworth as a 'town without a site' and cause
considerable embarrassment, particularly as places such as Belton, Finningley and Haxey were well advanced with their plans for a memorial. Mr.
Arthur Maw said that when he had spoken to people about a memorial, many believed that, since the Parish Church and the Nonconformist Churches
were erecting memorial tablets in their respective places of worship, they felt there was no need for a public memorial. When the decision to continue
was taken there were issues over what style the memorial would take. For those who favoured a stone monument their difficulty lay in finding a
suitable site. Both the Market Place and the frontage of Barnes and Breeze shop were considered but discounted. The idea of buying the Imperial Hall
and turning into a recreation and meeting place for the town was rejected. Upgrading the town's water supply came up for consideration but was
quickly dismissed. A deputation from the men who had returned

America 's Independence Of Independence Essay
July 4,1776 was the day America would declare its Independence from their mother country England. Thomas Jefferson drafts this Declaration of
Independence using as a reference the Scottish declaration. Declaring Independence would mean war between the British empire and "America".
With only 35,000 poorly trained troops and 45,000 militias, no navy, small industry with few financial resources the U.S was able to defeat the
British Empire which had 56,000 skilled redcoats, 30,000 hessians, 50,000 loyalists, a royal navy and lots of financial resources. So the question
remains how exactly was the U.S able to win its independence against such a huge empire? The American revolutionaries shared a set of political and
social values which in essence gave meaning to their actions. In September 1776 British army commander Sir William Howe along with his brother
Richard Howe used 32,000 Hessians to attack the American Commander General Gorge Washington (pg.243). The brothers defeated Washington's
army in several battles from Brooklyn Heights to New York where Washington's army was saved by a storm. By then the battle for independence
seemed doomed the British General occupied New York Washington had few men. However, on Christmas night 1776 General Washington decided to
cross the Delaware and launch a surprise attack on the Hessians camp at Trenton and succeeded, followed by the victory in Princeton which marked
two of his first victories. In the fall of 1777, general Howe planned to

Marriage A La Mode: The Marriage Settlement By William...
William Hogarth's "Marriage A La Mode: The Marriage Settlement" shows the shift in status and wealth amongst economic and social groups during
18th century England. The Georgians were more concerned with the "new" wealth, which was geared towards the acquisition of private property.
This was accomplished by engaging in arranged marriages where the women of the bourgeois who played an imperative economic role were married
off to landowners in quest of capital, while prosperous entrepreneurs sought land property. Often times, many women would engage in clandestine
marriages because they did not wish to be part of marriages that were not based on love. As a result, The Marriage Act of 1753 also known as "An Act
for Better Preventing Clandestine Marriages," was put in place and required all marriages to be conducted by a ... Show more content on

In essence, the act was less about the rights available for women, but more about the rights to secure property. These covert marriages would limit the
bourgeois from marrying their daughters into families with aristocratic land, and vice versa, ultimately, altering the social stability present in western
Europe as women were essential for those who wished to pursue their propertied interests.
In Hogarth first satirical work, "Marriage A La Mode 1: The Marriage Settlement," he sets out to mock the aristocratic arranged marriages that occurred
in 18th century London. The story starts out in the aged Earl Squanderfield's mansion where he is finalizing negotiations to marry his son, the Viscount,
to the daughter of the wealthy businessman who is sitting opposite the earl. As his name "Squanderfield" suggests, the earl has wasted all his money
and to gain wealth, organizes this marriage. The earl

Gage called the Battle of Bunker Hill "A dear bought victory, another such would have ruined us." Gage received about 4,500 reinforcements with
General William Howe, John Burgoyne, and General Henry Clinton whom fought alongside with him at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Gage started to

They used an assault to take the Americans headquarters in Cambridge. Some forces under General Howe seized he Charlestown Peninsula, although

Lord Altham was advised to marry a good woman if he wished to "inherit the titles and entailed estates of his elder cousin, the Earl of Anglesea"

beatings were commonplace. Although Lord Altham insisted his son would one day succeed him as Earl of Anglesea, there were rumors that
Gregory planned to start a new family with the baron and leave Jemmy out of his rightful inheritance. Due to the insistence of Gregory, Jemmy was

What Led To Reform Dbq Essay
Almost all of the leaders in the House of Commons and in some other sections of politics, such as newspapers, called for a reform to the British
Electoral System, which ultimately led to reform and the later repealing of the Corn Laws. Numerous reasons were given as to why reform was vital
for Britain, a country which was having some difficulties since the Corn Laws were introduced 1815. Most of these reasons were economic, as taxes
were high, it hurt the middle class, and there was possibly even some despotism in England. All of these factors led to a commotion in England for a
reform which finally came in 1832.
Just a few years after the Corn Laws took effect some were already looking for reform.William Cobbett, a radical journalist, wrote that their present

one person from ruling long past the public wanted. Viscount Althorp, a Whig member in the House of Commons, believed that the low feeling of
success in England was caused by the problems with the House of Commons not addressing the general public's issues. He therefore believed that
there should be a reform for Parliament if there was any English spirit left to do so. (Document 3) Althorp thus strongly believed that there should be a

How Did The Agricultural Revolution Affect Europe
The Agricultural Revolution had an enormous impact on Europe, particularly in England and the Netherlands. There were many ideas of how to
improve agriculture and eliminate subsistence living. A few key individuals paved the way for the agricultural revolution. These people included
Viscount Charles Townsend, Jethro Tull and Cornelius Vermuyden. The aforementioned individuals developed ideas that were crucial to the
Agricultural revolution. The essential components of the Agricultural Revolution during the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe included improvements
in farming, pertaining to the Open Field System, the implementation of enclosure and an increased availability of farmland; A lot of this had to do with

There was the removal of the Open Field System, a removal of the fallow year and the introduction of nitrogen supplying crops. Not to mention that
there were significant increases in the number of livestock, production and farmland (because of drainage). The Agricultural Revolution can be
compared to the Scientific Revolution in Europe that occurred years before the Agricultural Revolution. During the Scientific Revolution there were
many changes in people's way of thinking. For example, Copernicus revolutionized new outlooks by introducing a heliocentric view, this was later
solidified as true by Johannes Kepler. Kepler proved Copernicus' views by establishing the 3 Laws of Planetary Motion. Another great scholar of the
Scientific Revolution was Galileo Galilei who challenged ideas regarding motion. Taking all of these great minds into account it is clear that the
Scientific Revolution urged a belief in learning, investigation and experimentation. This very thought process is applicable to the Agricultural
Revolution that occurred years later. During the Agricultural Revolution great minds such as Viscount Charles Townsend, Jethro Tull and Cornelius

A motivating force behind the revolution was the American embrace of a political ideology called "republicanism", which was dominant in the
colonies by 1775. The "country party" in Britain, whose critique of British government emphasized that corruption was to be feared, influenced
American politicians. The commitment of most Americans to republican values and to their rights, helped bring about the American Revolution, as
Britain was increasingly seen as hopelessly corrupt and hostile to American interests; it seemed to threaten to the established liberties that Americans
enjoyed. The greatest threat to liberty was depicted as corruption. The colonists associated it with luxury and, especially, inherited aristocracy, which

A British pursuit was stopped by a rearguard unit; therefore, Howe could not occupy the abandoned capital until September 26. British deaths totaled
to about 600 and American losses were 900 dead and wounded, along with 400 taken prisoner. After Howe 's victory at Brandywine, his army camped
at Germantown, Pennsylvania. Washington planned a surprise attack against the redcoats at sunrise. He broke the army into four separate columns for
battle. The American soldiers marched to Germantown by two roads, with General Sullivan to the right and General Greene to the left. Washington,
along with General Wayne, joined Sulliven and caused the British to fall back. Some hundred men ran and hid in the Chew house, a large stone

the redcoats in it. Knox 's fired cannons at the home, which merely bounced back at them. The fog and smoke caused massive confusion for several
others of Washington 's columns. All of a sudden two American divisions collided and fired upon each other. More and more mishaps followed, and
finally Washington ' men retreated. In June of 1775 in Charlestown the British were awaken from their sleep. The British were totally unaware of the

The History Of Aerial Flight

  • 1. The History of Aerial Flight On August 17th, 1917, General Jan Christian Smuts, of the Royal Flying Corps, captured the significance that aeroplanes would play not just as an auxiliary force, but a new form of warfare: There is absolutely no limit to the scale of its future independent war use. And the day may not be far off when aerial operations with their devastation of enemy lands and destruction of industries and populous centres on a vast scale may become one of the principal operations of war, to which the older forms of military and naval operations may become secondary and subordinate. It was upon this recommendation in a report written to the Air Ministry and the Air Staff to combine the two fronts of Britain's aerial presence, to create a single independent military branch, the Royal Air Force. On April 1st, 1918 the Royal Air Force was formed by an Act of Parliament, and would be the only thing that stood between them and the Nazi Luftwaffe. The history of aerial flight is often looked at from the perspective of the great moments, from the first flight of the Wright Brothers in 1903, to the Battle of Britain, but many less than stellar moments have perhaps shaped the formation of aviation in ways that may have been overlooked. Heavier–than–air flight, as it were, was in its infancy of development in Britain, due to stringent financials and unwilling risk takers. For instance, the Wright Brothers were turned away from England because the Treasury was unwilling to financially back the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Pros And Cons Of The Intolerable Acts The Intolerable Acts were a series of laws passed by British Parliament in 1774 with the intent to suppress the colonial Boston. The series of laws closed the ports and placed it under martial law. The Sons of Liberty were a group of colonial protestors which issues a call for a boycott. Merchant communities were skeptical to participate unless everyone could mutually agree on terms and means to enforce the provisions. Pressure from the groups was quickly mounting, colonial legislatures empowered delegates to attend a Continental Congress where they would set up terms for a boycott. Philadelphia September 5, 1774, The Congress first met. With delegates representing each of the 13 colonies except for Georgia. By the Next month, Congress had come up with a Plan. October 20, 1774, The Articles of Association were adopted by Congress. The Articles of Association stated that if the Intolerable Acts were not repealed by December 1, 1774, the colonies began a boycott of British goods. Inside the Articles, there were outlined plans for an embargo on exports if the Acts were not repealed before September 10, 1775. Within the Articles of Association were fourteen different articles outline different topics. The article that affects Theater is Article 8 which states "and will discountenance and discourage every species of extravagance and dissipation, especially all horse–racing, and all kinds of games, cockfighting, exhibitions of shews, plays and other expensive diversions and ... • 3. Battle of Vimy Ridge Many countries have tried but failed to capture this area. Both French and British armies tired but failed the Germans were too strong. This area was known as Vimy Ridge, which has many high hills and was located in France. The Germans had captured this area since September 1914, the Germans started to build artillery proof bunkers and trenches. Germanys had the advantage in every battle; Germanys had their bases on top of the long hills. Which lead them to look down on their enemies, which was easier for Germanys to kill their target. After countries failing to capture Vimy Ridge, Canada decided they were going to attempt to fight for Vimy Ridge. For the first time Britain asked for generals to lead Canada to victory for the battle of Vimy Ridge. Sir Julian Byng and Major Arthur Currie were asked to lead the Canadian Military to win the battle of Vimy Ridge. After months of practicing a strategy Canada was ready. April 1917, Canada went to battle with Germany for Vimy Ridge. This became one of the most devastating battles В¬in Canadian history. Canadians should remember that Vimy Ridge was not their triumph alone. British artillery and the elite 51st Highland Division helped make victory possible (Desmond Morton, Significance of Vimy Ridge). Vimy Ridge is considered a defining moment in Canadian history because, it was Canada's first time using a general to plan tactics and strategy's, Canada was the only country that succeeded on capturing Vimy Ridge, lastly all Canadian ... • 5. Who Is To Blame For The American Revolution In battling the British in the Revolutionary War, the American rebels did just as the great French military and political leader, Napoleon Bonaparte advised, "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake". Though there were a great deal of missed opportunities and misguided actions taken by both sides of this war, none were as great as those by the ministers in London and British Generals Howe and Burgoyne. However, of these three, one held a great deal of responsibility for Britain's failure to suppress the American rebels by 1777. This person was indeed, General Howe. General Howe is to blame for this failure because of all of the three listed, he was the most lethargic, the most eager to surrender, and the one who failed to support his comrades. Some may claim that is was General Burgoyne's responsibility due to his famous loss at Saratoga, New York. However, as will be stated later, that failure will also ultimately fall at the hands of General Howe. While the ministers in London acted out of their desire for authority over the colonies with little knowledge of the situation in America, they are still not hold to most blame of the three. General Howe holds this title because as it is known, wars are rarely determined by a single event as they are won through the combined effect of a series of events. Before 1777, there were two main turning points in the War which led to this failure of defeat the Americans by this time. The first is the Battle of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. What 's A Name? What's in a name? As you stroll around the streets of Nelson, do we ever look up at the blue signs, wondering the stories behind these names that roll off your tongue so everyday? Do you stop to picture Nelson, 170 years ago, imagining the people that walk the same path to work as you everyday, down Trafalgar Street? These steps that the first settlers of Nelson made, have shaped our city, creating the perfect base for following generations to make change upon. As generations have occupied Nelson, the names of these streets have developed with our culture, creating change for the future; however, as our society has changed, do the street names lose value? Do you walk down the street, forgetting who walked before you and the stories in their footprints? Does this leave the importance of our street names left behind, as our advances in society take over? The New Zealand Company landed on Fifeshire, on February 1, 1841; led by Captain Arthur Wakefield, who was followed by many English settlers, escaping the economic conditions of their European nation, looking for a fresh start. The new emigrants began to settle into their new country, with the continual stream of immigrants growing Nelson's population steadily, and with that came a new town to build. The settlement was based around Church Hill, where the Nelson Cathedral stands today, with Wakefield losing no time in getting his surveyors and labourers to work; marking out the sections and streets of the newly formed town. ... • 8. Essay on Battle of Saratoga Battle of Saratoga During the time of the American Revolution, there were many battles that took place and affected the Revolution. One battle though, made a huge impact on the American Revolution. The Battle of Saratoga proved that the disadvantaged and weaker American forces were strong enough to overpower the British forces. It all started when General John Burgoyne needed to get his forces to Albany. He and his army headed across the Hudson River, where they would then take a road south–ward to Albany. Burgoyne knew the enemy (American forces) were in the area, but he did not know of their exact location. Leading to the Battles of Bemis Heights and Freeman's Farm, the Battle of Saratoga became known as a highly significant battle ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Freeman was a Loyalist who had earlier left for Canada. After about three hours of battle, the Americans ran out of ammunition, making them have to retreat. The British then claimed victory at Freeman's Farm. Freeman's Farm was located on the west side bank of the Hudson River. It was right near Bemis Heights, making it easy for people to build fortifications in the woods and high outcroppings. It was located a few miles away from Burgoyne's destination of Albany. It was a perfect location for an army to fight and keep themselves in somewhat of an alright sanctuary. During the Battle, both sides used different tactics and strategies. Burgoyne decided to go with a risky strategy of dividing his army into three columns, two towards Bemis Heights and one to follow the road that paralleled the Hudson. The American forces (led by Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold) placed expert riflemen (led by Daniel Morgan) in charge of taking out the left flank of the British (led by Simon Frasier). This strategy worked well for the Americans, of course until they ran out of ammunition. The battle (of Freeman's Farm) was officially ended when Burgoyne heard word from Sir Henry Clinton. Clinton was getting ready to leave New York City and come assist Burgoyne with the continuous battles. So, he told Burgoyne to hold back and wait for him to get there before he attacked the Americans again. Burgoyne gave up his plan for attack ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Human Rights Act By Viscount Sankey Essay Decades before the implementation of the Human Rights Act , Viscount Sankey's prose in Woolmington v DPP alluded to the presumption of innocence as the "one golden thread" which runs through the web of English criminal law . He essentially establishes that the legal burden of proving the defendant's guilt lies with the prosecution . This principle is arguably underlying in every jurisdiction that respects ones right to a fair trial and is the foundation of the criminal law. There are two important themes that must be discussed relating to the principles set out in Woolmington: Firstly, in this case it was acknowledged that there can be instances where a reverse burden of proof is applied and that in fact, the onus is on the defendant to prove his innocence rather than for the prosecution to prove his guilt. Secondly, despite some departure from the Woolmington principle, it does not inevitably necessitate that the law has been unfaithful to its underlying rationale. A common deduction of the Woolmington principle is that Sankey, in his judgement, is ambiguous and left too much open to interpretation. Furthermore, it has been argued by Adrian Zuckerman that the way in which something is written can in fact lead to a justified imposition of a legal burden on the defendant and that the accused will only have to prove their innocence by disclosing an onerous burden in situations where legislation expressly commands them to. Article 6(2) of the ECHR states: "Everyone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Essay on Success: You can do it! You can do it!–SUCCESS– Success is to fulfil a goal that you have set for yourself. Achievement of success involves five components: realisation, confidence, motivation, action and perseverance. Step one is to realise your goal and how to achieve it. Step two is to have the confidence to take the steps towards your goal. Step three is to find motivation to keep you on the path towards you goal. Step four is action, the first physical step you take in the process for success. Step five is perseverance. On the road to success, you will most definitely come to setbacks and struggles. The only way to conquer those things and achieve your goal is to have strong perseverance. As David Brink said, "A successful person is one who... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Without that fuel, you will go nowhere. Motivation can be a number of things. It could be family, money, fame, fear of failure; anything that makes you strive for your goal. My motivations are to: become famous, be able to live comfortably, and to be able to raise a family. I will hold onto these things and will keep moving towards success. Nelson struggled with his motivation, "I felt impressed with a feeling that I should never rise in my profession. My mind was staggered with the view of the difficulties I had to surmount and the little interest [influential friends] I possessed. I could discover no means of reaching the object of my ambition. After a long and gloomy reverie in which I almost wished myself overboard, a sudden glow of patriotism was kindled within me and presented my king and country as my patron. • 11. Essay on Case 20 1. What problems does Robin Hood have? What issues need to be addressed? 2. Do Robin Hood and the Merrymen need a new mission? new objectives? a new strategy? In the second year of the insurrection against the Sheriff of Nottingham, the tide of events is turning against Robin Hood and his men. The revolt, which began as a personal crusade inspired by anger, is feeling the consequences of not having a long term strategy or plan. In order to be successful, key changes are necessary for Robin Hood and the Merrymen. Robin Hood faces a myriad of problems that can potentially influence the changes that are crucial for Robin's organization, as well as affect the effectiveness of the insurrection. As the CEO of his organization, Robin has the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With no cash inflows, Robin will quickly consume his financial reserves and will not be able to purchase food, pay his men, or continue to outfit and provision the band. Consequently, this will leave Robin Hood and his band susceptible to attacks from a Sheriff that is getting stronger, recruiting more men, and receiving financial backing. Therefore, in order for the revolt to succeed, Robin Hood and the Merrymen do need to establish a new mission, new objectives, and a new strategy to achieve their goals. 3. What strategic options does Robin Hood have? Is continuing with the present strategy an option or is the present strategy obsolete? The potential strategic options of Robin Hood are to continue on with no major changes, to institute a fixed transit tax, to pursue geographic expansion, to try to kill the Sheriff, or to accept the barons' offer. While continuing with the present strategy and "stealing from the rich to give to the poor" is a viable option, it has more future negative consequences than positive ones. The mere fact that the Merrymen are growing at such a fast pace suggests that the present strategy is beginning to be obsolete, and furthermore, travelers are wiser and are avoiding Sherwood Forest altogether. This means that Robin Hood's and the band's revenue will decrease and they will not be able to continue to operate and keep the insurrection alive. 4. Why not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She alerted the police and an officer started following them. He asked for their identification cards. They gave the officer the cards and the officer made them go back to their house–which was a monastery as their father was a priest. Knud and Jens's parents weren't home. More police arrived on scene. "Where are the weapons?" one police officer asked. Jens led the police straight to the cellar where they kept the weapons. Soon, all the boys were arrested. What Strategic Elements Of The 1777 Campaign Plan In the fall of 1776 the British Empire stood on the edge of victory, Britain's New York campaign left the Continental Army in disarray and on the edge of extinction. The 1777 campaign, though not fully realized by the British crown, represented the best and last chance to suppress the American Rebellion before the rebellion transformed into a world war and went beyond the British ability to win. British Military Force Analysis The sheer supremacy of the British military force was more than capable of expeditiously suppressing an amateur rebellion and successfully restoring the insurgent colonies to their innate allegiance. Until Washington finally adopted a defensive strategy at the fortress of Harlem Heights, the British undoubtedly had a significant military leverage over the Americans; therefore, if Lord Germain's [Germain] strategy were properly employed, the British should have won. Washington also learned from his mistakes in the Battle of New York and ignored his "aggressive military instincts;" he eventually put aside his "honor–driven character" to adopt a new attitude towards his definition of a victory. "Though it ran counter to all his instincts, he now realized that his goal was not to win the war but rather not to lose it," and thus he embraced a defensive strategy in the fortress of Harlem Heights. Because of their job and missions, they are both required to have code names throughout the book. These girls know exactly what kind of trouble they would get into if any code name was given away and most importantly, the trust they would break from their friendship. While this would satisfy Robin personally, this would not provide a true solution to what the Merrymen seek. After the sheriff is dead there would be another person there to take his place that would continue to the same thing. 6)What are the advantages and disadvantages of accepting the offer of the barons to assist in securing King Richard's release from prison? Advantages –Amnesty if successful –Fair Ruler back in place –Provides an end to the campaign Disadvantages –Prince John could find out and retribution would be fierce. 7)What action plan do you recommend to Robin? The ultimate goal of the Merrymen is to rid Nottingham of the crooked Sheriff. The only plan that will ultimately do this is to join with the Barons and free King Richard. This is a high risk – high reward option, but is the only one that could ultimately bring an end to the Sheriff and Prince John as well. 8)How should Robin implement the recommended

Arnold, a soldier hurt in battle and never properly compensated by the Army, considered flipping on the Americans as a way out of the situation he was in. Peggy Shippin kept in contact with Andre throughout these years and Andre asked Shippin for help to persuade Arnold to flip. Shippin and Arnold got to know each other and eventually married. She told Arnold how he was not being treated fairly by the Americans and that Britain would be able to offer him more. Arnold agreed with his wife and eventually made plans with Andre to sabotage America. Clinton had Andre set up a meeting with Arnold to retrieve plans of what West Point's set up was. The idea was to gain control of the Hudson River cutting New England off from the rest of the colonies. The theory was whoever controlled the Hudson had the power as it traveled down to New York and was a clear line of trade and communication among the Americans. Arnold, who was a loose cannon for the Americans at this point and met Andre in Haverstraw, New York. He gave Andre plans that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Essay On John Donne John Donne was an English Poet, Priest and outsider. He was born into a devout catholic family in 1572 in London, however, he did not stay true to his families Catholic beliefs. Donne grew up as a catholic in a rough period in England when the anti–Roman period was reaching new heights. This of course caused problems for him until the 1590's when he returned to London from his studies abroad in Theological issues and converted to the English church. During these early days of his life, Donne converted because his brother was imprisoned for being Catholic and later died in prison. With Donne now in the English Church writing he soon became the secretary to Sir Thomas Egerton, Lord Keeper of the great seal. While for many this would prove to be the beginning of a great career, it would soon end. This was because he secretly married the teen niece of Egerton, Ann More, in 1601. He was then forced to move away to the countryside living in a poverty stricken lifestyle. Although having twelve kids and living in poverty seems horrible, Donne still thrived in his poetry. According to Wendy Smith, " Poetry written during those years limns an ecstatic physical and emotional union with an intelligent, passionate companion. Perhaps this blissful society of two was the home Donne had been looking for" (7). However, his wife died and his poetry took another unexpected turn, as it became more dark and not as full of love. As the years went on Donne slowly began to get sick more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. War Memorial History From the outset parish war memorial committees sent out requests to members of the public to nominate names for inclusion on the memorials. They received these in writing from the next of kin, from descendants and, in some cases, from an informed member of the public (either privately or on behalf of an organisation). They accepted evidence through word of mouth, from newspaper articles, church announcements and through door–to–door enquiries. Some committees decided that only those born in a town or village would be commemorated; some opted for birth and/or residence at time of death, whilst others allowed the names of anyone who had lived in the village at any time. Some, as in the case of Misterton, saw the addition of a female whose nursing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were those who described it as evidence of a 'deplorable lack of interest by the general public in this worthy object.' When it was put on the agenda for the Parish Council to discuss, the meeting had to be cancelled owing to the schoolroom having no heat and the likelihood of there being no gas. For a time it looked as though there would be no resolution. Many felt this would leave Epworth as a 'town without a site' and cause considerable embarrassment, particularly as places such as Belton, Finningley and Haxey were well advanced with their plans for a memorial. Mr. Arthur Maw said that when he had spoken to people about a memorial, many believed that, since the Parish Church and the Nonconformist Churches were erecting memorial tablets in their respective places of worship, they felt there was no need for a public memorial. When the decision to continue was taken there were issues over what style the memorial would take. For those who favoured a stone monument their difficulty lay in finding a suitable site. Both the Market Place and the frontage of Barnes and Breeze shop were considered but discounted. The idea of buying the Imperial Hall and turning into a recreation and meeting place for the town was rejected. Upgrading the town's water supply came up for consideration but was quickly dismissed. • 33. America 's Independence Of Independence Essay July 4,1776 was the day America would declare its Independence from their mother country England. Thomas Jefferson drafts this Declaration of Independence using as a reference the Scottish declaration. Declaring Independence would mean war between the British empire and "America". With only 35,000 poorly trained troops and 45,000 militias, no navy, small industry with few financial resources the U.S was able to defeat the British Empire which had 56,000 skilled redcoats, 30,000 hessians, 50,000 loyalists, a royal navy and lots of financial resources. So the question remains how exactly was the U.S able to win its independence against such a huge empire? The American revolutionaries shared a set of political and social values which in essence gave meaning to their actions. In September 1776 British army commander Sir William Howe along with his brother Richard Howe used 32,000 Hessians to attack the American Commander General Gorge Washington (pg.243). The brothers defeated Washington's army in several battles from Brooklyn Heights to New York where Washington's army was saved by a storm. By then the battle for independence seemed doomed the British General occupied New York Washington had few men. However, on Christmas night 1776 General Washington decided to cross the Delaware and launch a surprise attack on the Hessians camp at Trenton and succeeded, followed by the victory in Princeton which marked two of his first victories. • 34. Marriage A La Mode: The Marriage Settlement By William... William Hogarth's "Marriage A La Mode: The Marriage Settlement" shows the shift in status and wealth amongst economic and social groups during 18th century England. The Georgians were more concerned with the "new" wealth, which was geared towards the acquisition of private property. This was accomplished by engaging in arranged marriages where the women of the bourgeois who played an imperative economic role were married off to landowners in quest of capital, while prosperous entrepreneurs sought land property. Often times, many women would engage in clandestine marriages because they did not wish to be part of marriages that were not based on love. As a result, The Marriage Act of 1753 also known as "An Act for Better Preventing Clandestine Marriages," was put in place and required all marriages to be conducted by a ... These covert marriages would limit the bourgeois from marrying their daughters into families with aristocratic land, and vice versa, ultimately, altering the social stability present in western Europe as women were essential for those who wished to pursue their propertied interests. In Hogarth first satirical work, "Marriage A La Mode 1: The Marriage Settlement," he sets out to mock the aristocratic arranged marriages that occurred in 18th century London. The story starts out in the aged Earl Squanderfield's mansion where he is finalizing negotiations to marry his son, the Viscount, to the daughter of the wealthy businessman who is sitting opposite the earl. As his name "Squanderfield" suggests, the earl has wasted all his money and to gain wealth, organizes this marriage. The earl ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

James was the legitimate heir to the wealthy house of Annesley, but was only twelve–years–old when he was kidnapped by his uncle, shipped to America, and sold into indentured servitude. James spent twelve years in servitude until he finally escaped and returned to Ireland to reclaim his birthright. His story, riddled with betrayal and bravery, inspired many fictional works, including the famous novel, Kidnapped, by Robert Louis Stevenson. The baron did so soon after. He married a woman by the name of Sally Gregory in 1722. Sally Gregory was cruel to Jemmy and beatings were commonplace. Although Lord Altham insisted his son would one day succeed him as Earl of Anglesea, there were rumors that Gregory planned to start a new family with the baron and leave Jemmy out of his rightful inheritance. Due to the insistence of Gregory, Jemmy was sent away and forced to live on the streets and perform odd jobs for money. He was eventually taken in by a good–hearted butcher and his family, but it was not before long that trouble began to stir. While James was away, his father died rather suddenly and mysteriously. Right before his death, Lord Altham "reportedly asked for God's forgiveness for having 'wronged' his son" (Ekirch 60). His guilt towards James was probably due to the banishment of the boy, as well as bastardizing him temporarily as part of a financial stunt. Due to the symptoms and spontaneity of the death, Ekirch suspected possible foul play. The biggest suspect was Richard Annesley, Lord Altham's little brother. Richard and Altham had a very tumultuous relationship with a history of discord and numerous quarrels over inheritance. While there were no suspicions at the time and no proof now, ... • 38. What Led To Reform Dbq Essay Almost all of the leaders in the House of Commons and in some other sections of politics, such as newspapers, called for a reform to the British Electoral System, which ultimately led to reform and the later repealing of the Corn Laws. Numerous reasons were given as to why reform was vital for Britain, a country which was having some difficulties since the Corn Laws were introduced 1815. Most of these reasons were economic, as taxes were high, it hurt the middle class, and there was possibly even some despotism in England. All of these factors led to a commotion in England for a reform which finally came in 1832. Just a few years after the Corn Laws took effect some were already looking for reform.William Cobbett, a radical journalist, wrote that their present miseries were caused by "the ... Viscount Althorp, a Whig member in the House of Commons, believed that the low feeling of success in England was caused by the problems with the House of Commons not addressing the general public's issues. He therefore believed that there should be a reform for Parliament if there was any English spirit left to do so. There were many ideas of how to improve agriculture and eliminate subsistence living. A few key individuals paved the way for the agricultural revolution. These people included Viscount Charles Townsend, Jethro Tull and Cornelius Vermuyden. The aforementioned individuals developed ideas that were crucial to the Agricultural revolution. During the Scientific Revolution there were many changes in people's way of thinking. For example, Copernicus revolutionized new outlooks by introducing a heliocentric view, this was later solidified as true by Johannes Kepler. Kepler proved Copernicus' views by establishing the 3 Laws of Planetary Motion. Another great scholar of the Scientific Revolution was Galileo Galilei who challenged ideas regarding motion. Taking all of these great minds into account it is clear that the Scientific Revolution urged a belief in learning, investigation and experimentation. • 40. American Revolutionary War A motivating force behind the revolution was the American embrace of a political ideology called "republicanism", which was dominant in the colonies by 1775. The "country party" in Britain, whose critique of British government emphasized that corruption was to be feared, influenced American politicians. The commitment of most Americans to republican values and to their rights, helped bring about the American Revolution, as Britain was increasingly seen as hopelessly corrupt and hostile to American interests; it seemed to threaten to the established liberties that Americans enjoyed. The greatest threat to liberty was depicted as corruption. The colonists associated it with luxury and, especially, inherited aristocracy, which they condemned.... A British pursuit was stopped by a rearguard unit; therefore, Howe could not occupy the abandoned capital until September 26. British deaths totaled to about 600 and American losses were 900 dead and wounded, along with 400 taken prisoner. After Howe 's victory at Brandywine, his army camped at Germantown, Pennsylvania. Washington planned a surprise attack against the redcoats at sunrise. He broke the army into four separate columns for battle. The American soldiers marched to Germantown by two roads, with General Sullivan to the right and General Greene to the left. Washington, along with General Wayne, joined Sulliven and caused the British to fall back. Some hundred men ran and hid in the Chew house, a large stone building, and returned fire from the second story. Instead of by–passing the building, Colonel Knox believed that they should destroy the house with the redcoats in it. Knox 's fired cannons at the home, which merely bounced back at them. The fog and smoke caused massive confusion for several others of Washington 's columns. All of a sudden two American divisions collided and fired upon each other.
