1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge codes and conventions of real media
products?
2. The Documentary that we made is a
mixed documentary this is because it
contains many observations from Archive
footage, Cutaways, Interviews and a voice
over with a narrator. This is also mirrored
by other professional documentaries such
as “supersize me” as this documentary is
about obesity and staying healthy and
includes a combination of Interviews and
narrations which is what we have tried to
follow.
3. All Documentaries have their own unique style which delivers
content to the audience and is defined what it features. Our
Documentary features themes that are relevant to our subject
matter which is Healthy Eating. For example our Documentary
includes Cooking, Shopping, Exercising and meal planning. It
has a single stranded storyline as it follows one particular
subject and the industry around it. Most documentary can be
single stranded but often have a variety of different themes
running through out.
4. In our documentary we followed the codes and conventions
of a professional documentary as we included graphics.
When using these graphics we made sure that they were
simple and contained little visual Detail, in order for them
not to take any focus away from our interviewee. The
graphics used in our documentary are positioned in the
bottom corner on the opposite side of the interviewee the
type of font we used was Adobe Arabic, and the font style is
regular. The title was 160.0 and the subtitle was the same
family and style but the sixe was 110.0 .Having graphics
anchors who they are and how they are related to the topic.
Here being a general practitioner.
5. The mise-en-scene of our documentary uses the codes and
conventions as the background and clothing links and relates
to the topic or is involved of the topic of Healthy eating as it
would be seen in a professional documentary. This is an
important convention to follow as it helps to anchor the
meaning between what is being said and the role that the
interviewee plays in the documentary for example in
supersize me there is an interview with a GP and in the
background you can see the doctors room and has a
stethoscope around his/her neck so in our documentary we
have tried to mirror this and have done the exact same thing
to make it look as professional. This shows the location of a
doctors which relates to the theme of health and wellbeing.
6. Cutaways are another way in which our documentary has
used the codes and conventions as they help to make the
documentary look more professional as they can be used to
remove any jump cuts. We also used cutaways to reinforce
what is being spoken about as they can link to the topic,
making them relevant. Also using cutaways in our
documentary helped to keep our audience entertained as just
watching an interview without any cutaways or anything to
watch might make them loose there focus.
7. The editing of our documentary follows the codes and
conventions by only using cuts by expanding and
condensing images and clips. We also used creative camera
work like other professional documentaries as this is an
essential factor when making your documentary look more
interesting. We used shots like Panning and zoom in and
zoom out. So it looks more exciting with the audience we
also made sure that when using the rule of third are
audience where looking diagonally to the interviewee
rather than looking at the camera like other professional
documentaries
