A level media studies- Q4: How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
1. Q4: How did you use media technologies in the
construction and research, planning and
evaluation stages?

2. Research and Planning
Throughout the course of our project we have used various forms of media
to help with researching our music video. I used blogger continuously to
document different ideas and to show the examiner what has inspired our
music video. Blogger also allowed our group to access and share our ideas
from anywhere, so we weren’t restricted to only being able to work from the
classroom. Most of the information used in our blog was accessed through
the search engine, Google. We to accessed existing examples of music
videos in the alternative rock genre through the video sharing
website, YouTube. This allowed as to accurately use the conventions of the
genre in our music video and analyse the music videos using Goodwin’s
analysis. Which helped us to familiarise ourselves with the characteristics
found in music videos, so we could then cooperate them within our own
music video. We also watched ‘how to’ videos to learn how to use certain
areas of premiere pro that we were unfamiliar with. Before progressing to
the practical side of our project, we had to plan every detail of the music
video, so we could make the most of the filming. We planned our music
video shot for shot using a storyboard. By using a storyboard we were able
to accurately illustrate our ideas.
3. Construction
After planning the music video we were then ready to film. We filmed of site
and used HD video cameras. This allowed us to capture high quality footage
which was important for our video because we wanted to use a lot of close up
shots, which look more effective because of the high quality camera. Once we
had all of our footage, we edited our video using Premiere Pro. This allowed to
us to professionally edit the footage we had using different transitions and
filters. For the ancillary tasks, the digipack and the magazine advert we used
the college cameras to take the still shots. We then manipulated the images
using Photoshop. Photoshop was useful because it allowed us to layer the
images and text. We also found it useful for when we decided to change the
colour of the graffiti images used.
4. We used Photoshop to change
the original image, which was
red, to pink because it matched
the graffiti used in the music
video and on the digipak.
To edit our music video we
used premiere pro. It allowed
us position our footage on the
time line and edit the footage
accurately. This was useful as
we had a lot of lip syncing
which had to be precise.
We also found that you could layer
the footage on premiere pro, which
looked effective because it made
the footage seem distorted and
more interesting.
5. Evaluation
In the evaluation we used blogger to publish our final evaluation. The evaluation
consists of different media technologies which all use the internet. I tried to use
various forms of media to illustrate my IT skills. For question one, I produced a
PowerPoint presentation and used slide share to publish it to the blog. For
question two, I used prezzi to create a presentation. I found this website easy to
use because I found that you were able to organise it better and was more
interesting that PowerPoint. For question three, we used the microphone on a
video camera to record our voices. We then used premiere pro to edit the voice
recordings over the top of our music video for the commentary. We also
incorporated other images within the video to elaborate on the points we made.
We then uploaded the video to YouTube and embed it on our blog. This task was
more difficult but in the end more detailed and interesting than if we were to just
write down our opinions as we were able to illustrate and give example of what
we meant. For question 4, I used a PowerPoint presentation and used slide share
to publish it to the blog. This media technology was good to use for the type of
information I need to write.
