Microsoft History
Background
The beginning of Microsoft Inc. started with Bill Gates and Paul Allen writing computer program code for
local businesses and municipalities. In 1975 they were inspired by an issue of Popular Electronics that
showed the new Altair microcomputer kit, manufactured by MITS Computer. Bill Gates and Paul Allen
wrote a version of BASIC, a computer programming language, for the machine. Later that year Bill Gates
left Harvard University to work full time developing programming languages for the Altair, and he and Paul
Allen relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to be near MITS Computer, where Paul Allen took a position
as director of software development. Bill Gates and Paul Allen named their partnership Micro–soft

Microsoft Surface
Topic Selection Microsoft recently unveiled its prototype, Surface, their version of a tablet or alternative
device to a personal computer. It is questionable how Microsoft, a known software company, will be able to
manufacture and sell a tablet device that is a contender in the marketplace against devices such as the iPad.
Thesis: It is critical that Microsoft produce a device that overcomes the limitations of its competitors and
adds features that set it apart, in order to define itself in the tablet market.
Background Information Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled the company's new tablet Surface, at a
press event in Hollywood last week. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Microsoft sees that Apple is world–class in what they do. Microsoft has little choice but to do what they
must" to make sure someone has world–class hardware in the Windows camp. (Ray, 2012)
Microsoft has not had a competitor for the iPad since Apple released the original version in 2010. Windows
8, which is to be available to consumers this fall, has been the company 's hope to compete against Apple 's
dominance in the tablet market. Apple sold 3 million of its new iPad's in the first three days after its launch
(Stern, 2012).
Along with determination, innovation, and advantages is the recognition that Microsoft can do some very
stupid and self–defeating things. But the company has been in the tablet space for decades. In fact, you could
argue that one reason Apple knew what would work is because Microsoft did so much of the advance work
to eliminate what wouldn 't. It may finally have gotten many of the mistakes out of its collective system
(Sherman, 2012). Ballmer said the company took its time with the tablets, working quietly on its new
machines to work out all the details. "We took the time to get Windows 8 and Surface right," he said (Stern,
2012).
The company still faces big odds. Competing with itsown hardware partners could prove sticky, at best.

Microsoft and Apple Microsoft and Apple are two well–known technology corporations, with billions of
dollars of earnings between them." The most important thing about a technology is how it changes people".
JARON LANIER, You Are Not a Gadget: A Manifesto. Microsoft and Apple revolutionized how people
view computers. Before these company's existed computers did not even have screens, only complex outputs
on long sheets of paper. Computers that are used today would not exist if it were not for these two
corporations. Microsoft and Apple are two very large business with many similar technologies, but have very
different upbringings and overall view of technology
Microsoft was founded on April 4, 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. The company was strictly based on
microprocessors (a circuit used in computing) and software at the time. As their new "MS–DOS" OS
(Operating System) gained popularity with several technology companies such as IBM, Gates and Allen
moved their focus to new OS's. 1985 was the start of the OS we all know and love, Windows. Windows was
the first main stream OS to have a GUI (Graphical User Interface) that was easy to use with no prior
knowledge of command line. After Microsoft sales skyrocketed they went on to create new products used
every day by millions of people. These products vary from the Xbox to Bing with hundreds of products in–
between. Apple (Microsoft's most famous competitor) was

They claim that subjectivity is needed in order to study the meaning. Modernists argue that subjective
understanding leads to bias which scientists focus on eliminating. The post modernism perspective is
different from the other two perspectives as it is not willing to establish the truth. Post modernists do not
make permanent ontological commitments and also epistemological commitment. Post modernists change
from one philosophical position to another as they do not have a philosophical stand. The modernism and
symbolic interpretivism will be important in analyzing Microsoft Corporation. The perspectives will be used
to examine different variables such as culture, authority, structure/goals, roles, conflict, and ability to change
(Hatch, 1997). An examination of the organization's external and internal environment was conducted by
using the modern and symbolic interpretivism perspective based on the current situations. In symbolic
interpretivism, the research tries to understand how a company operates and what features of the
organizational structures help the company maintain its standards. Direct information was gathered about the
organization by being involved in the daily routine of the corporation. This provided information about lived
concepts, intentions and meaning (Hatch, 1997).

Later, US Justice Department filed antitrust charges in 1998 against the software company, claiming that
Microsoft had taken over the internet browser competition and limited consumer choice. In view of antitrust
regulation in the US and EU, and increasing competition in the desktop software market, Microsoft was
determined to move beyond the PC software industry. By formally recognizing the emerging business
opportunities introduced by the new internet era ("Web 2.0"), Microsoft began to reinvent itself. It wanted to
extend its software products into web–based services for businesses and consumers. It wanted to try new
sectors such as media, television set top boxes, game consoles and other broader technology services.
Microsoft aimed to transform itself and wanted to set a standard for accessing, communicating and doing
business over the internet.
Microsoft had entered various new markets in which it has no propriety advantages with it's new
diversification strategy. Microsoft could not conquer all the markets alone as they would have to face new
challenges and many industries were against Microsoft getting into their industry as they feared that
Microsoft would monopolize the market. Hence, it improved its already existing as well as created new
partnerships in the newly targeted industry. Microsoft hence, needed to constantly monitor the dynamic
changes in the markets and adjust its strategies to capture opportunities in these markets.

Microsoft Executive Summary
1 Executive Summary
After the successful acquisition of Yahoo!, Microsoft has increased its share on the internet search market
and become market leader in web–service subscribers. However, it is still far behind Google in the searching
advertising market.
Although Google is by far the leading power in search advertising today, internet search technology is still in
its infancy and there are much room for improvement. Microsoft shall invest on the R & D research of search
technology and the integration of search with its current products. Meanwhile, it shall also invest in the fast
growing display advertising market.
Advancement in technology has enable internet to become a platform in its own right. This brings about the

A very interesting point to be made here is: in each of this battle, Microsoft wasn't the technological leader in
respective sector and wasn't providing the best solution. In the "Browser War", it successfully attacked
Netscape's business model by bundling Internet Explore on Windows for free. In other two cases, it managed
to provide products that were "good enough" and were easier to be used as default tools on its dominating
Windows operating system[7][8].
Microsoft has also established signification presence in sectors such as web based services, server software,
enterprise database management system, software development tools and game console. Since 2003,
Microsoft has been trying to establish itself as a major player in internet search engine. However, its effort so
far has not been successful. Google has been the run away leader in internet searching since the early years
of 21st century, leading Microsoft's Live Search and Yahoo! by large margins. In 2008, Microsoft acquired
Yahoo! in a bid to close the gap on this particular sector.
Microsoft's tactics in establishing dominance in the IT industry is often a matter of concern for governments.
Both the U.S. and E.U. governments have high profile and long running anti–trust suits against Microsoft. In
both cases Microsoft was accused of abusing its monopoly power in its handling of

On the other hand, piracy is also witnessed in many countries that are developing. Also, we find that strong
competitive rivalry creates market forces that actually threaten the development of Microsoft as one of the
largest firms in the market. For instance, other companies have now diversified their production, and now
they are also offering operating systems and other computer hardware products. Also, the rising popularity of
freeware, limits and potentially has an effect of reducing the company's business. Therefore Microsoft should
carry out a thorough SWOT analysis in order to identify the importance of product uniqueness and also
product improvement.
Alternative Solutions
On piracy, Microsoft should create awareness on the impact of piracy and also urge users to respect
copyrights. The public should be sensitized on what should be considered as generally accepted social
behavior, maybe this could help in decreasing piracy (Avi Goldfarb, 2015). Just like the same way the
changing of social norms have actually led to the reduction in littering and also smoking. Also, Microsoft
Company should provide users some legal means that can enable them access contents or products (Avi
Goldfarb, 2015). Microsoft should also provide users the ability and know how on how to identify legal
methods of accessing their contents and products. Microsoft should also implement technical controls like

In the summer of 1973, Paul Allen, who knew more about computer hardware than
Bill Gates, shared an article with Gates buried on page 143 in Electronics
Magazine. The article described the invention of the 8008 micro–processor chip by a young company called
Intel. Paul was surprised to receive the technical manual for the chip in the mail simply upon request.
Immediately, he went to work analyzing its capabilities. Due to the lack of transistors, the 8008 chip was
very limited in its use, but Allen discovered despite the limitations, the chip was good for repetitive tasks and
mathematical data.
First Business Venture
When Paul Allen entered college at Pullman, Washington, a town on the east side of the state, sixteen–year–
old Bill Gates traveled frequently by bus to visit him. On these long trips across the state, Gates wrote a
program that facilitated the reading of traffic information gathered by municipalities through a device set up
on the side of certain intersections. A long, rubber tube stretched across the road from one of these devices,
and each time a vehicle ran over the tube a punch was made in the roll of paper within the device. People

There have been many arguments and issues that have been raised with the controversy over Microsoft and
the U.S. Department of Justice's claim against Microsoft and its founder Bill Gates of monopolistic practices
in bundling its internet browser "Internet Explorer" into its popular Windows computer operating system. By
doing this, Microsoft would effectively crush its competitors (it's main rival being Netscape Navigator), and
acquire a monopoly over the software that people use to access the Internet.
I recently heard a listener on NPR (National Public Radio) comment about the monopoly issue between
Microsoft and the U.S. D.O.J. that "Intellectual endeavors are vastly infinite and thus cannot be
monopolized." I wonder ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many corridors and keys that allow someone to gain access to the Internet. The real question here
is whether Microsoft is seeking to widen it's doors at the expense of others and at the same time seeking
gatekeeper access to the Internet by seeking to obtain the only key that allows access to the Internet. A
metaphor of this problem can be explained through a library building that has many entrances in which to
reach the knowledge of books contained within. Is Microsoft seeking to close off the other entrances of other
providers so that the only access is through its entrance? It would be very tempting to say yes, but that would
be wholly unfair. Now that the problem and issue which is presented to us is clear, an examination of
whether or not Microsoft is violating any anti–trust (anti–monopolistic) laws can now proceed. Before he
installed "Windows 95," John Dodge connected to the Internet using software from a Microsoft competitor,
CompuServe's "Internet in a Box." Not anymore. "Windows 95" silently disabled a key piece of his setup
and made it too difficult for him to reinstall it. Dodge was not a novice. He is senior executive editor of the
trade journal PC Week and so had access to the highest level support engineers. Even software professionals

In 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen created a company called Microsoft. More than thirty years later,
Microsoft is a leader in the field of computer programming. Gates and Allen both had big plans for their
company and came up with different ways of managing people and products
in order to create possibly the most effective and versatile workforce of any corporation in existence. To

Microsoft's core competency is software development, which has led to the creation of massive sales of
software applications. Microsoft has a competitive edge because of the control it exerts in the operating
systems segment of the industry. When the company established the intent to make Windows, the standard
operating system of the future, it sets its resources into motion. In a way, Microsoft forces other software
manufacturers to use Windows as a platform for its software application. The result was major competitive
advantage for Microsoft as other software manufacturers were preoccupied converting to Windows platform.
Microsoft's dramatic growth and profitability has enabled to invest a large amount of cash flow into its core
products as well as core competencies, which has led to economies of scale and scope. Microsoft has been
able to develop core competencies resulting from collective learning in the organization, which can come
from coordination of diverse production skills or the integration of multiple streams of technologies.
Reputation resources include software products that have high brand recall and recognition, generic
corporate and consumer acceptance (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), and numerous powerful features that
are in use worldwide, which promote standardization and competitive advantage through their ease of
integration and cost–effectiveness. Microsoft's intellectual resources include copyrights, trademarks,

Microsoft Accounting Strategy
Microsoft's Financial Reporting Strategy
The case at hand is primarily to discuss the financial reporting strategy adopted by Microsoft Inc. for the
period 1996–1999 and the subsequent litigation that arose out of the accounting practice followed by
Microsoft.
Microsoft's primary operations has been developing and manufacturing of the software products. As a
company, it has shown a very stable growth in terms of revenues and profits, thus enabling better than
industry share price increase over more than a decade (1986–1999). With respect to the primary operation of
software development and the task to financial reporting the two areas that were required to be established
were –
a) Treatment of Software Development costs.
b) Revenue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hence since the "technical feasibility" could be justified either ways using discretion, Microsoft chose to
indicate that a larger proportion of the costs were incurred prior to establishing technical feasibility and
hence the other costs related to the development are not materially significant, hence the entire costs is
shown as expense. Thus using the justification that technological feasibility of product occurred sufficiently
late in the development process and useful life of the product is short–lived, Microsoft was able to argue in
favor of not "capitalizing" the costs and expensing them instead and use this for reporting higher expenses
(and thus lower profits).
b) The argument for Microsoft deferring to recognize a part of revenue at the point of sales was that say
when a customer is buying software in 1996, they 're also buying the right to upgrades and customer support
in 1997 and 1998. Hence a part of the sales needs to be considered as "Unearned revenue".
However the real reason for stashing a huge reserved as "Unearned revenue" appears to be meeting revenue
and profit guidance. Microsoft has been the dominant player in the IT sector and hence it was able to stash
enough reserves over good quarters by keeping a part of its sales as "Unearned revenue" that it could easily
tide over a few bad quarters. The below graph gives a pictorial

Microsoft Monopoly
A monopoly is the exclusive possession or control of the supply or the trade of a commodity or a service. An
example of a monopoly is when the U.S markets were more monopolistic than there utilities. Another
example of a monopoly is when the US took Bill gates to court. The reason why Bill Gates was taken to
court by the United States is because Novell has sued the company of Microsoft in the year of 2004. Also the
charge was that the company has violated one of the U.S. antitrust laws.
The merger that brought about the charges is that there was a big battle the two processing softwares of
Microsoft and WordPerfect. The battle between the two was about Novell complaining the Microsoft has
done nothing but abuse its monopoly of PC. It abused its power by adding browsing functions into windows
95. Novell has also said that the company has engaged into some strange activities. One example is
Microsoft has been integrating its own products like its own browser technologies into an operating system
in an exclusionary manner. The appeal of the trial was that Gates has made the claim that WordPerfect was
excluded because he said that it was the reason the windows 95 crashed in the first place. This appeal was by

1. Microsoft's History:
Bill Gates established Microsoft (initially named Micro–Soft) in 1975 in the wake of dropping out of
Harvard at 19 years old and collaborating with High School companion Paul Allen to offer a rendition of the
programming dialect BASIC. Entryways moved Microsoft to Seattle in 1979 and started creating

when IBM pick Microsoft to compose the working framework for its new machines. The organization

A Report On The Microsoft Corporation
This Session Long project would like for me to follow one firm of my choice for the entire session. I will
analyze how this firm makes economic decisions as well as how events in the economy affect the firm. I will
pick two of the economic terms presented in the PowerPoint Slides that apply to my organization and
summarize a current event issue and how it relates to an economic concept.
The Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) is a company that I find especially intriguing. I have a brother who is a
software engineer for them and another relative who is a marketing specialist with this garage built company.
I can't tell you how many times I have heard "if I would have only got in on the ground floor of Microsoft I
would be so rich". I have always been into technology and despise people who rely solely on their Apple
products. As you know Microsoft sits lower than Apple on this Fortune 500 list and I am curious to see if
some of the new products like their new Surface Pro Pad will blast past the iPad. I personally think Microsoft
will start to rely more on the sales of consumable entertainment items such as the X–Box 360 or the Surface
Pro Pad then the development and sales of the operating systems that the company was built upon.
Technology is a huge factor that plays what I think is the largest role in the success of Microsoft. Everything
the company is built on and involved with is based around the technology that goes into their products from

Microsoft Search Case Study
September 29, 2014
1. Microsoft has been fighting competitors in the Operating System fields as well as the Search field for
many years. After Apple launched its new Macintosh computer, Microsoft came out with its first production
of Windows which had a graphic user interface. Microsoft had 95% of all OS on individual PC's in the
2000's where apple only had about 2%–3% (Rivkin 2). A new venture that Microsoft was working toward
was application software where the produced Microsoft Word and Excel. At first these two applications
where not very popular on PC computers because WordPerfect and Lotus 1–2–3 where the main applications

Microsoft had to split their operating system company from the rest of their organization. Another action
Microsoft took was its relations with Java. They licensed a version of Java that worked mainly with windows
where they tried to drive out the competitors and in later years they didn't even allow Java to work with
Windows XP (Rivkin 4). Microsoft tried to basically kill Java and with this the producers of Java sued
Microsoft. Last, Microsoft took actions toward their competition in open–source software: Lunix. Microsoft
responded by opening up into own server OS code like Lunix did. They actually sold stripped–down
versions of the code to emerging economies and they also set up a lab that's sole purpose was to find
competitive weaknesses in the Lunix OS (Rivkin 5).
The patterns I see with Microsoft's reactions to competition is that they rely heavily on the fact that they are
leaders in the field of operating systems and they use this monopoly as leverage on what they give out to
their consumers with their "bundling capabilities" (Rivkin 4). In the past I believe they have been successful
against competitors even though they have gotten into legal trouble while doing it. This is because even after
the law suits they still remained ahead of the pack in market shares.

Brand positioning is essential to the success of any firm because it delivers a perception into the consumer's

primarily teenagers, that if you buy this Xbox game, not only can you have fun for days playing it, but you
can also see beautiful women while doing it. Another example is during an NFL football game, a commercial
came on promoting a new football game for the Xbox. Marketing strategies such as these are what Microsoft
has used for years to become the top company that they are.
Relatively speaking, Microsoft uses many of the same strategies for its promotions as Sony and Nintendo.
Product positioning is the most difficult aspect of Microsoft's marketing strategy for the Xbox. Consumers
know that Microsoft is a great company and most computer owners have positive brand images of Microsoft.
This really helps Microsoft get a jumpstart on their new product. But, the hard task comes when Microsoft

Value Chain Analysis
The value chain for Microsoft is very important. Applying the value chain analysis on Microsoft is a little
different than most companies because for the most part they offer software that does not result in a physical
product. Microsoft's main operation is the development of software and services. They rely on many
different teams and departments of software engineers and developers working together to create and
improve current and future software and services to meet end user's needs. In addition, service is a large part
of what Microsoft does. They provide end user support for the products and services they sell. Marketing and
sales is also very important. On the consumer side Microsoft displays ads that promote their array of brands.
Microsoft also has many support processes that help the business

Comparing Apple And Microsoft : The Relationship Between...
There will always be competition in the technology world to push mankind to the next level. According to
Kapko, Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, and Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, have been in a brutal on
and off war since the late 1970s, that's nearly 40 years! During the early years of production, Apple and
Microsoft were allies but quickly grew bitter due to competition and disagreements. Around the late 1990s
there were awkward moments of peace between the two companies when Jobs reached out to other tech
companies for help and announced a pact between Microsoft and Apple. It wasn't much after till Jobs fell
back into his old ways and began criticizing Microsoft for copying Google and Apple, which turned out to be
false. In the end, Jobs and Gates acknowledged the long rocky relationship between the two companies
which created a new partnership. Due to compromise and combined efforts, the newly found partnership
helped both companies grow and strive during the past couple of years (Kapko). Although Apple and
Microsoft are similar, they are different in terms of how to reach the customer, software, and innovation.
While Apple and Microsoft have many differences, they also have many similarities when it comes to
reaching their customers. There are many ways to reach the customer including online store, actual store, and
most importantly though advertisements ("Microsoft Versus Apple Compare And Contrast..."). Both Apple
and Microsoft online stores offer products, software, and applications. For Microsoft, most products are only
available to some countries, whereas Apple products are available for most of the world with the local
currency. While Microsoft provides software for all, Apple only provide software and hardware for
themselves. Both companies have a vast amount of applications through their online stores. Through the
concept stores both companies encourage customers to have a hands–on experience with the technology
advertised. Microsoft stores are geared towards helping with any software problems and very little sales.
Apple stores are more complex with "eye catching architecture and interior designs" and the "Apple Genius
bar that serves to identify possible problems, repairing, replacements,

  • 1. Microsoft History Background The beginning of Microsoft Inc. started with Bill Gates and Paul Allen writing computer program code for local businesses and municipalities. In 1975 they were inspired by an issue of Popular Electronics that showed the new Altair microcomputer kit, manufactured by MITS Computer. Bill Gates and Paul Allen wrote a version of BASIC, a computer programming language, for the machine. Later that year Bill Gates left Harvard University to work full time developing programming languages for the Altair, and he and Paul Allen relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to be near MITS Computer, where Paul Allen took a position as director of software development. It is questionable how Microsoft, a known software company, will be able to manufacture and sell a tablet device that is a contender in the marketplace against devices such as the iPad. Thesis: It is critical that Microsoft produce a device that overcomes the limitations of its competitors and adds features that set it apart, in order to define itself in the tablet market. Background Information Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled the company's new tablet Surface, at a press event in Hollywood last week. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Microsoft sees that Apple is world–class in what they do. Microsoft has little choice but to do what they must" to make sure someone has world–class hardware in the Windows camp. (Ray, 2012) Microsoft has not had a competitor for the iPad since Apple released the original version in 2010. Windows 8, which is to be available to consumers this fall, has been the company 's hope to compete against Apple 's dominance in the tablet market. Apple sold 3 million of its new iPad's in the first three days after its launch (Stern, 2012). Along with determination, innovation, and advantages is the recognition that Microsoft can do some very stupid and self–defeating things. But the company has been in the tablet space for decades. In fact, you could argue that one reason Apple knew what would work is because Microsoft did so much of the advance work to eliminate what wouldn 't. It may finally have gotten many of the mistakes out of its collective system (Sherman, 2012). Ballmer said the company took its time with the tablets, working quietly on its new machines to work out all the details. "We took the time to get Windows 8 and Surface right," he said (Stern, 2012). The company still faces big odds. Competing with itsown hardware partners could prove sticky, at best. (Sherman, 2012) Sherlund ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Martin Nichols McSweeney, Kristina ENGL 1013 11/07/2017 Microsoft and Apple Microsoft and Apple are two well–known technology corporations, with billions of dollars of earnings between them." The most important thing about a technology is how it changes people". JARON LANIER, You Are Not a Gadget: A Manifesto. Microsoft and Apple revolutionized how people view computers. Before these company's existed computers did not even have screens, only complex outputs on long sheets of paper. Microsoft and Apple are two very large business with many similar technologies, but have very different upbringings and overall view of technology Microsoft was founded on April 4, 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. The company was strictly based on microprocessors (a circuit used in computing) and software at the time. As their new "MS–DOS" OS (Operating System) gained popularity with several technology companies such as IBM, Gates and Allen moved their focus to new OS's. 1985 was the start of the OS we all know and love, Windows. Windows was the first main stream OS to have a GUI (Graphical User Interface) that was easy to use with no prior knowledge of command line. After Microsoft sales skyrocketed they went on to create new products used every day by millions of people. These products vary from the Xbox to Bing with hundreds of products in– between. The perspectives will be used to examine different variables such as culture, authority, structure/goals, roles, conflict, and ability to change (Hatch, 1997). An examination of the organization's external and internal environment was conducted by using the modern and symbolic interpretivism perspective based on the current situations. In symbolic interpretivism, the research tries to understand how a company operates and what features of the organizational structures help the company maintain its standards. Direct information was gathered about the organization by being involved in the daily routine of the corporation. This provided information about lived concepts, intentions and meaning (Hatch, 1997). • 12. Microsoft, Microsoft And Microsoft Later, US Justice Department filed antitrust charges in 1998 against the software company, claiming that Microsoft had taken over the internet browser competition and limited consumer choice. In view of antitrust regulation in the US and EU, and increasing competition in the desktop software market, Microsoft was determined to move beyond the PC software industry. By formally recognizing the emerging business opportunities introduced by the new internet era ("Web 2.0"), Microsoft began to reinvent itself. It wanted to extend its software products into web–based services for businesses and consumers. It wanted to try new sectors such as media, television set top boxes, game consoles and other broader technology services. Microsoft aimed to transform itself and wanted to set a standard for accessing, communicating and doing business over the internet. Microsoft had entered various new markets in which it has no propriety advantages with it's new diversification strategy. Microsoft could not conquer all the markets alone as they would have to face new challenges and many industries were against Microsoft getting into their industry as they feared that Microsoft would monopolize the market. Hence, it improved its already existing as well as created new partnerships in the newly targeted industry. Microsoft hence, needed to constantly monitor the dynamic changes in the markets and adjust its strategies to capture opportunities in these markets. Microsoft continued to diversify ... In the "Browser War", it successfully attacked Netscape's business model by bundling Internet Explore on Windows for free. In other two cases, it managed to provide products that were "good enough" and were easier to be used as default tools on its dominating Windows operating system[7][8]. Microsoft has also established signification presence in sectors such as web based services, server software, enterprise database management system, software development tools and game console. Since 2003, Microsoft has been trying to establish itself as a major player in internet search engine. However, its effort so far has not been successful. Google has been the run away leader in internet searching since the early years of 21st century, leading Microsoft's Live Search and Yahoo! by large margins. In 2008, Microsoft acquired Yahoo! in a bid to close the gap on this particular sector. Microsoft's tactics in establishing dominance in the IT industry is often a matter of concern for governments. Microsoft Essay Microsoft There have been many arguments and issues that have been raised with the controversy over Microsoft and the U.S. Department of Justice's claim against Microsoft and its founder Bill Gates of monopolistic practices in bundling its internet browser "Internet Explorer" into its popular Windows computer operating system. By doing this, Microsoft would effectively crush its competitors (it's main rival being Netscape Navigator), and acquire a monopoly over the software that people use to access the Internet. I recently heard a listener on NPR (National Public Radio) comment about the monopoly issue between Microsoft and the U.S. D.O.J. that "Intellectual endeavors are vastly infinite and thus cannot be monopolized." The real question here is whether Microsoft is seeking to widen it's doors at the expense of others and at the same time seeking gatekeeper access to the Internet by seeking to obtain the only key that allows access to the Internet. A metaphor of this problem can be explained through a library building that has many entrances in which to reach the knowledge of books contained within. Is Microsoft seeking to close off the other entrances of other providers so that the only access is through its entrance? It would be very tempting to say yes, but that would be wholly unfair. Now that the problem and issue which is presented to us is clear, an examination of whether or not Microsoft is violating any anti–trust (anti–monopolistic) laws can now proceed. Before he installed "Windows 95," John Dodge connected to the Internet using software from a Microsoft competitor, CompuServe's "Internet in a Box." Not anymore. Hence since the "technical feasibility" could be justified either ways using discretion, Microsoft chose to indicate that a larger proportion of the costs were incurred prior to establishing technical feasibility and hence the other costs related to the development are not materially significant, hence the entire costs is shown as expense. Thus using the justification that technological feasibility of product occurred sufficiently late in the development process and useful life of the product is short–lived, Microsoft was able to argue in favor of not "capitalizing" the costs and expensing them instead and use this for reporting higher expenses (and thus lower profits). b) The argument for Microsoft deferring to recognize a part of revenue at the point of sales was that say when a customer is buying software in 1996, they 're also buying the right to upgrades and customer support in 1997 and 1998. Hence a part of the sales needs to be considered as "Unearned revenue". However the real reason for stashing a huge reserved as "Unearned revenue" appears to be meeting revenue and profit guidance. They licensed a version of Java that worked mainly with windows where they tried to drive out the competitors and in later years they didn't even allow Java to work with Windows XP (Rivkin 4). Microsoft tried to basically kill Java and with this the producers of Java sued Microsoft. Last, Microsoft took actions toward their competition in open–source software: Lunix. Microsoft responded by opening up into own server OS code like Lunix did. They actually sold stripped–down versions of the code to emerging economies and they also set up a lab that's sole purpose was to find competitive weaknesses in the Lunix OS (Rivkin 5). The patterns I see with Microsoft's reactions to competition is that they rely heavily on the fact that they are leaders in the field of operating systems and they use this monopoly as leverage on what they give out to their consumers with their "bundling capabilities" (Rivkin 4). In the past I believe they have been successful against competitors even though they have gotten into legal trouble while doing it. This is because even after the law suits they still remained ahead of the pack in market shares. 2. Google's competitive advantage was that it used a cost–per–click approach with advertisers. • 80. Comparing Apple And Microsoft : The Relationship Between... There will always be competition in the technology world to push mankind to the next level. According to Kapko, Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, and Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, have been in a brutal on and off war since the late 1970s, that's nearly 40 years! During the early years of production, Apple and Microsoft were allies but quickly grew bitter due to competition and disagreements. Around the late 1990s there were awkward moments of peace between the two companies when Jobs reached out to other tech companies for help and announced a pact between Microsoft and Apple. It wasn't much after till Jobs fell back into his old ways and began criticizing Microsoft for copying Google and Apple, which turned out to be false. In the end, Jobs and Gates acknowledged the long rocky relationship between the two companies which created a new partnership. Due to compromise and combined efforts, the newly found partnership helped both companies grow and strive during the past couple of years (Kapko). Although Apple and Microsoft are similar, they are different in terms of how to reach the customer, software, and innovation. While Apple and Microsoft have many differences, they also have many similarities when it comes to reaching their customers. There are many ways to reach the customer including online store, actual store, and most importantly though advertisements ("Microsoft Versus Apple Compare And Contrast...").
