Introduction
On August 17, 2015, I had the opportunity to attend Fayetteville Technical Community College's
(FTCC) ribbon cutting of their campus cafeteria. Not only was the ribbon cutting taking place, but
the revealing of the campus cafeteria name was designated for this event as well. Trojan Eatery,
symbolic of the campus mascot, was derived from Michael Morrison a student who submitted the
winning name of the new cafeteria. This paper discusses my reflection of a community group visit

Keen the president of FTCC gave a speech, but while he was giving the speech campus security was
visible making sure participants could hear Dr. Keen and that everyone was safe. Campus security
was also awaiting the arrival of participants such as FTCC campus board members, saving parking
spaces for these individuals, and guiding them to the main event location. In addition, other staff
members assisted with ensuring students and individuals within the community had appropriate

"Ribbons" by Laurence Yep, the author introduces the ancient culture of foot binding. The
characters, Stacy and Paw–Paw,Stacy's grandma, both struggle to get along with each other. They
both pursue the theme of being an outsider because they have different meanings of life based on
what has happened in their past. Her grandmother notices that Stacy uses ribbons to tie her pointe
shoes, which symbolizes her passion for ballet. But, Paw–Paw can't stand the thought of the ribbons
because they symbolize pain to her. Ribbons remind Paw–Paw of the painful experience of foot

One of the largest issues in today's society is gendered violence. Gendered violence is violence that

The experience of breast cancer today is different of any other illness. 'Pink culture' and has shaped
the nature of breast cancer activism along with the experience of breast cancer for the rising number
of women diagnosed with the disease and can be seen in a variety of ways. First, looking at how
corporations have effectively drained and deflected meaningful activism through the 'pink–washing'
and commodification of breast cancer shows how easy it is to overlook the real issues with nice

Not a Disease, but a Journey: Breast Cancer
My mom bought me a breast cancer awareness purse for my fifteenth birthday. I thought it was the
ugliest thing I'd ever seen. It was black with white lettered sayings plastered all over it. Things like
"cancer isn't about living and dying, it's about living until I die" and "fight like a girl." The sayings
didn't mean anything to me, and neither did the purse. The only thing cute about it was the pink
ribbon in the corner, but that wasn't enough for me to flaunt it around everywhere. Cancer to me was
a death sentence. If the doctor told you that you had cancer, you were going to die, it was that
simple. Cancer was something that was never going to happen to me or to anyone I loved. It just
didn't happen that way. I guess you could say we, myself and my loved ones, were invincible. It
didn't take long though, for cancer to become a trip to the emergency room after my mom had
severe back pain. Cancer was a pain, one that didn't ever go away. Cancer was a heartless doctor
explaining my mom's expiration date. Two weeks, the doc said my mom would be lucky if she lived
that long. Cancer had not only been in her breast, but in her bones, lung, liver, and skin as well.
Cancer was a hospital room full of family. It was my mom with a huge smile plastered on her face
despite hearing the horrid news. Cancer was her telling our entire family that it was the best day of
her life, not because she was told she was going to die, but because she had her entire family there
supporting her.

A. S. Byatt's The Pink Ribbon
A. S. Byatt's story "The Pink Ribbon" is a story about change in a marriage as a result of a traumatic
experience, as well as how the struggle between duty and love manifests themselves. In this story, a
man doing what he thinks is his duty becomes overwhelmed with feelings of anger, fear, and
resentment after his transition from spouse to caretaker. Through seemingly imagined encounters
with a beautiful young woman, this man is reminded of his wife and what it is like to have
meaningful contact with another person that is not consumed by taking care of someone else, which
causes him to make a choice in the name of mercy, both for himself and his wife. Byatt shows the

James believed the doll "Dipsy" was equivalent to Mado, so the use of the word 'suffocating'
suggests that he thought Mado was suffocating or trapped and the only way to help her was to give
her release through death, although it also could be hinting at the method he was going to use. Byatt
wrote that every time James went outside he took huge gulping breaths, which suggests that James
felt trapped himself and might have thought that if Mado were no longer around he would be able to
breathe again. James' visits from the "fetch" (234) ,Dido, also foreshadow Mado's death. A fetch in
folklore is an omen of death. Since Dido reminded him of his wife and what their relationship used
to be like, it makes sense that Mado's death was forthcoming. The last instance of foreshadowing is
in the final paragraph of the story, "...the Teletubbies were sitting on the end of the casket–shaped
cradles,..." (236), which, again, goes back to the symbol of the Teletubbies doll. The idea of the
Teletubbies going to beds that were shaped like coffins proposes a parallel to where Mado was
going to spend her last moments, which is emphasized by James telling Mado to "Come to
bed,...Just a rest, for a while," (236). So, are duty and love really different things? Merriam–Webster

morally right," and love as "a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person." James' sense

The Yellow Ribbon By Pete Hamill
Memories can last a life time, so we tend to only remember the extraordinary ones. Extraordinary
like the essay "The Yellow Ribbon" by Pete Hamill, in which he talks about how a person named
Vingo, was riding on a, bus recently released from jail, to this oak tree explaining to some
passengers that he had told his wife to leave him if she wanted, since he went to jail or to go to this
oak tree and tie a yellow ribbon around it to see if she wants him to stick around and he will go and
check it out. In the end, he saw hundreds of ribbons tied on to the tree. Not only is this an amazing
story, but also very unforgettable one as well, because he finds out that after four years in jail his
wife has enough love for him to go to this tree and tie hundreds of ribbons just to show the type of
love the women had for Vingo. I have to say that, I believe this story is truly unforgettable, but I also
got a story that is very extraordinary, like the time that I got my very first car. Furthermore, I didn't
just get a car, I got the love of two truly loving parents. Much like Mr. Hamill and his story about
love I too have a love story that involves not my wife, but my parents. When I got to the age of
driving, and around the time to go to college I wasn't expecting any type of car of any sort because I
knew that my family just had enough money to get me into college. However, one week after I took
