Humanism In The Middle Ages
This class has taught me that "humanism can be defined as examining the creative and intellectual contributions made by every culture that stresses
human logic, values, and scientific method (Humanities Through the Ages).
When I think of the middle Ages, I envision romantic images of knights in shining armor, magnificent castles, and glorious cathedrals. But the Middle
Ages, (medieval) was much more. There were rise of cities, economy and money that started in Florence Italy, Mediterranean empires, the townspeople
benefited from the rise but the rise damaged the nobles.
The rise of nations, crises of the church, new military development caused a decline in the medieval period. Shortly after the Black Death (Bubonic
and the Plagues) a new period

Machiavelli's Impact On Humanism
Humanism was an intellectual movement that had spread during the renaissance. Humanism had a great impact on the way people thought as well as
education especially when it came to writing , it change the society and became a way of life. Because of the renaissance there was a great flux in the
numbers of schools and universities and the number of students willing to attend them, the universities and schools permitted young adults and adults
to increase their knowledge in many areas such as; philosophy, theology, history and much later on anatomy. The schools not only taught lessons but
also invited discussion in class, permitting the students to argument with each other and their professors challenging and accepting each man's theories

Cesare Borgia).Machiavelli was a very resourceful man , in fact the reason why he had written and given The Prince as a gift was because he had
wanted to help lord Lorenzo de Medici with the management of the city of Florence and gain his favor despite their differences both men shared
similar traits. In it, Machiavelli analysis all the different types of states and principalities, and identifies things such as, how they were created, he
also analyzed different monarchies and how they ruled. Machiavelli even went as far wondering how these city/states could be reclaimed and how
they should then be ruled. Machiavelli seemed to be one of the few who did not believe or even discuss the idea and possibility of a "utopian
world existing" given the circumstances of where he was settled, a place in constant yet subtle quarrel there was really much to dream about and
this "realism" was shared by many if not all in the state of Florence. He believes that if you try and change the way things are and begin to pursue
personal ambitions that could lead to your own downfall, and again we could use the example of the Medici's , especially in the Case of Lorenzo the
magnificent , although he was from the wealthiest merchant family , he should not have taken upon himself the responsibility of ruler or overseer of
the city of Florence( dictator), had he just stuck to being a wealthy merchant he and his family would not have to flee the city of Florence. Hence, The
Prince is a classic literary example of Renaissance writing in the ideas it conveys and how it conveys them. The renaissance in Florence created the
opportunity of improving its politics and making changes to its

The Importance Of Humanism
Humanism has influenced our culture for over 600 years. First coined by Friedrich Immanuel Niethammer, the contextual definition of humanism has
fluctuated over time. Although the definition has changed the basic principle of humanism stands. Humanism is a doctrine that promotes the
importance of the human person. Through periods such as the renaissance, the age of enlightenment, the age of revolutions, the nationalistic times, and
modern day, the meaning of the word humanism, as well as its influence on people, has changed.
Before the Renaissance, Francesco Petrarca, better known as Petrarch, was "the first to put into words the notion that the centuries between the fall of
Rome and the present had been the age of Darkness" (Paul Johnson). He saw the darkness of the past and worked to steer humanity into the right path.
He is credited with being the 'father of humanism" as well as starting the Renaissance movement. Humanism was based on the study of Classical Greek
and Roman literature in the form of the humanities (philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language). Petrarch searched for lost Latin
manuscripts that would improve the understanding of the Greek time period. Humanists, including Petrarch, believed intellectuals should refrain from
the public to focus on their studies. Artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci emphasized humanism and publicized it in paintings such as the vitruvian man.
This painting preached Protagoras's idea that "man is the

Secular Humanism Essay
The fall 1986 Tennessee court decision on alleged "secular humanism" in Holt, Rinehart, Winston textbooks illustrates the continuing controversy over
that term.
The term "secular humanism" is used today to castigate a wide spectrum of our populous. The derision with which the term is used suggests images of
horrid, grotesque monsters. In reality, however, the term merely consists of two sorely misunderstood words. In combination they suggest a virus,
though singly they are innocuous, if not healthy.
"Secular" means having to do with this world, or that which is temporal rather than spiritual. It suggests something that is not specifically pertaining to
religion, or that which is apart from God, although not necessarily opposed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
4, pp. 69 ff.), "Humanism recognizes the value and dignity of man and makes him the measure of all things or somehow takes human nature, its limits,
or its interests as its theme."
Humanism describes the emphasis that was revived in the Renaissance when the Liberal Arts were used to distinguish man from beasts. Through
letters––or scholarship––was sought a rebirth of spirit and spiritual freedom and justification of the claim to rational autonomy. In essence, the
Renaissance was a revival of the capacities and powers of the ancients.
The version of "secular humanism" expressed in the "Humanist Manifesto" (I––1933 and II––1973) is actually naturalism, wherein there is no
qualitative difference between man and animal, nor any supernatural. Man supposedly evolved from lower forms of life and does not possess a soul.
According to "secular humanism," man does have reason and will, which he should exercise to realize human personality. The Humanist Manifestos
also explicitly deny the sinful nature of man. This form of secular humanism is actually a repudiation of true humanistic values. The secular perversion
of humanism is anthropocentrism (self–expression/affirmation and human autonomy), moral relativism, and atheism. A Christian world view contradicts
this version of humanism.
A key distinction between naturalistic "secular humanism" and Christianity would be the view of life after death. "Secular humanism," being limited to
this world, would not acknowledge

The Influence Of Humanism
Have you ever wondered why nowadays there are less less people going to church or even supporting God? 500 years ago new ideas started to spread

The Allentown museum stated the following about the Vitruvian Man; "Man is the measure of all things" (Kintzer and Wetterlund). Since Humanism
is about appreciating humans this clearly shows humanism, what greater honor can you get than being in the middle of everything. Everything has a
size this shows how man instead of god is connected to everything physical in this world. Likewise Tom Ashbrook, an award winning journalist, wrote
this about the Vitruvian Man, "symbol of man in the universe, man as the universe"(Tom Ashbrook). This is an obvious example of humanism since it
shows how man can be free of god, can be in the universe with only himself and other humans, and even be the universe ourselves. Da Vinci's view on
humanism was clearly implemented on his paintings, not only this but they undoubtedly spread throughout Europe and later on the world, which

Humanism In The Renaissance
Europeans emerging into the new era of the Renaissance came upon the deep interest in Latin and Greek literature, whom later took the name
"humanists". Humanism was a new education plan that valued evidence and reason and was influenced by ancient literature from a time when
scholars like Plato and Socrates based their teachings with scientific evidence rather than religious teaching. In the effect of the Bubonic plague, many
Europeans lost faith when they were battered with the epidemic that drastically decreased the population and in effect, doubted the church and it's
teachings. As the medieval time period reached it's end, society (mainly scholars at first) became more educated of secular ideas. Therefore,
experimented with debates and wrote texts to defend a broader education system not only based on medieval church teachings (Of course, inventions
like the printing press in the 1440s highly impacted the spread of teachings and texts which allowed the idea to become more widely known in a
shorter period of time than was attempted by past scholars). The impact and growth of secularism and individualism in effect of humanism from the
1400s to 1700s rests highly on humanists like Raphael, Marsilio Ficino and .....who emphasized the teachings of humanism corresponding with the
study of ancient texts which modified the educational system and governmental bodies and influenced a change in cultural aspects affecting Renaissance
art based on their classical and contemporary

Northern Or Erasmian Humanism
Humanism is "a system of thought that rejects religious beliefs and centres on humans and their values, capacities, and worth" (HMC, 2009). THIS
IS WRONG LOL Desiderius Erasmus was a Dutch Renaissance humanist and priest, he was born in 1466, was educated in religious schools and then
attended the University of Paris in 1494. He was part of a religious order but later became a humanist during the Northern Renaissance, where
Erasmus(1529) emphasised on the importance early childhood education as he spoke of in his work De pueris instituendis (On the Education of
Children). Although not its' only focus, "The idea of education, in its broadest sense, resided at the heart of the intellectual movement we now know as

Next, the natural character of the individual, as these are ingrained in the person's being and is extremely difficult, sometimes impossible, to alter, and
finally; practice, as the more someone does something (in this instance, virtuous human behaviour), the better they are at doing it and the more familiar
the action is.
Parrish(2010) notes that Erasmus had a very sincere and important belief that there are women whom are suitable pupils for the humanist methods of
education; as Erasmus(CWE, 1233:297) believes that in his understanding of the morality of gender roles, idleness and improper amusements
(pastimes) are hazardous to a female's virtue and thus, the humanist education of women is desirable as it is the education of moral principles.
FURTHER EXPLAINATION
In conclusion, Erasmus and Erasmian Humanism is very focused on the importance of early childhood education and that morals need to be taught to
children. Parrish(2010, 601) noted that the ideas of the Erasmian Humanism movement came to change the social world of early Europe, and greatly

The Philosophical Point Of Humanism

Renaissance Humanism
Humanism is the term generally applied to the predominant social philosophy and intellectual and literary currents of the period from 1400 to 1650.
The return to favor of the pagan classics stimulated the philosophy of secularism, the appreciation of worldly pleasures, and above all intensified the
assertion of personal independence and individual expression. Zeal for the classics was a result as well as a cause of the growing secular view of
life. Expansion of trade, growth of prosperity and luxury, and widening social contacts generated interest in worldly pleasures, in spite of formal
allegiance to ascetic Christian doctrine. Men thus affected –– the humanists –– welcomed classical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The present world became an end in itself instead of simply preparation of a world to come. Indeed, as the age of Renaissance humanism wore on, the
distinction between this world (the City of Man) and the next (the City of God) tended to disappear.
Beauty was believed to afford at least some glimpse of a transcendental existence. This goes far to explain the humanist cult of beauty and makes plain
that humanism was, above everything else, fundamentally an aesthetic movement. Human experience, man himself, tended to become the practical
measure of all things. The ideal life was no longer a monastic escape from society, but a full participation in rich and varied human relationships.
The dominating element in the finest classical culture was aesthetic rather than supernatural or scientific. In the later Middle Ages urban intellectuals
were well on the road to the recovery of an aesthetic and secular view of life even before the full tide of the classical revival was felt. It was only
natural, then, that pagan literature, with its emotional and intellectual affinity to the new world view, should accelerate the existing drift toward
secularism and stimulate the cult of humanity, the worship of beauty, and especially the aristocratic attitude.
Almost everywhere, humanism began as a rather pious, timid, and conservative drift away from medieval Christianity and ended in bold independence
of medieval tradition.

Humanism in Renaissance
There are two responses for Renaissance, the first one is Classical art reborn, and the second one is Humanism in Renaissance.People cannot present
themselves in their works; they can only worship God as a standard of legitimacy in Medieval. In Renaissance, people begin to show the love of
other things, such as a portrait, a painting of landscape and goods in their daily life. Compared to the period of Medieval and Renaissance, we can see
the value of humanity is raising up quickly, and take over the critical social status that Divinity has in Medieval.

Humanism In The Odyssey
Throughout history there have been a series of fundamental changes in culture and society that marked the passage of the Middle Ages and the Modern
Age. This is where, a phenomenon that changed the ideology of human beings was born, Humanism. Humanism seeks to exalt all human qualities,
rediscovering man to give a rational meaning to life inspired by the classical era. For all these reasons, this gave great importance to philosophy, art,
literature, and the history of the ancient era. However, throughout the history of humanism, they created many works that marked this ideology. For
example, the work Iliad and the Odyssey written by the Greek poet Homer. The Iliad tells the story of the Greek hero Achilles and his protagonism

Perhaps the most representative of this advance towards rationality and humanism, is the fact that Ulysses rejected during his trip the possibility of
becoming an immortal and free of the sufferings that mark the existence of man. However, he preferred to be a simple human. He did not want to be
neither god nor animal. He wanted to be a man who achieved his purpose and thus became a hero. It is really amazing how humanism has taught us
so much over time. It has allowed us to analyze the behavior and the way in which we perform in an objective manner. It is important, in order not to
decay into a great cultural void, to constantly remember what is considered to make us more human and that brings us closer to each other and to
ourselves. It is necessary to know the history and learn from it. You can see that humanism and progress go hand in hand if we talk about a better
future. There is a constant process of leaving behind to move forward, of renewal and perseverance. We must leave behind our mistakes, but not forget
them, this is one of the most important lessons that the ancestors of humanity have left as a legacy for the current generation and for the next.
Therefore, you do not have to sit still and inert just watching passively how things are given and do nothing for them. Everyone must do their part to
achieve the common goal. Humanism has undergone changes and transformations throughout history to reach its current form. What we live today is
the fruit of humanism. More than a stream of discoveries, we know that we can change many situations based on our actions. This ideological current
had many supporters who contributed transcendentally to the history of mankind. As it has had high success seasons, there have also been seasons of
little success during its development. Therefore, this has given

Nauert illustrates how humanism affected religion, platonic revival, and magic, beliefs on human nature, popular culture, and Renaissance art. The art
of printing helped ignite the growth of humanism and enables humanists to share their ideas. Nauert argues that the humanists' criticism of texts in the
fields of law, medicine, natural science, and theology allowed them to assume control over these fields. They gained this control because they claimed
that their critical methods revealed whether a document was authentic, furthermore, they rejected documents that they discovered were forged or
misinterpreted. In Florence during the mid–fifteenth–century, humanists became less interested in civic humanism, and grew interested in spiritual,
religious, and philosophical questions. Nauert suggests that NiccolГІ Machiavelli was the sixteenth–century heir of Florentine civic humanism. Nauert
illustrates how Renaissance art was connected to humanism. He writes, "The veneration felt by humanists for ancient works of art was widely
regarded as a rediscovery of the principles of the principles a spirit of ancient art, a three–sided influence among ancient work, modern artist, and
modern humanist was only natural" (91). The papacy also became patrons of humanistic art and scholarship; and their support facilitated the expansion
of humanism. The achievements of Renaissance Italy did begin to lessen in the sixteenth century; and the influence of humanism faded, but did not
perish. Italian humanism was transported across the Alps and ignited humanist movements in Germany, France, England, and Spain. The basic
elements of northern humanism derived from Italian humanism; however, in each country that humanism spread to the people adapted or altered the
elements of Italian humanism in order to fulfill their needs. The primary way that humanism

The Renaissance began in the 1300's and brought with it many new ideas and ways of thinking. The main one of these ideas being humanism, or that
the best that a man can be is greater than the idea of theology. The Italians began to spread this idea and it began to grow. The Italians decided that the
best way to express and spread the idea of humanism during the Renaissance was through their sculptures and paintings. This can be seen in many
works of art from this time period such as the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, The School of Athens by Raphael, and Michelangelo's David.
First, humanism is visible in many paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance time period, one example of this is Leonardo da Vinci's Mona

Humanism During The Renaissance
Humanism Through Works of Art During the Renaissance Wishing for a rebirth is wishing for an opportunity to achieve perfection, through rebirth
one can not only correct previous mistakes, but also contemplate aspects of the world that went unnoticed in previous times. Literally meaning
"rebirth" the Renaissance is a time period of discovery and reason, where the perspective of the masses went from a concern for one's existence
beyond death back down to earth to the study and the idealism of the individual. The Renaissance consisted of a period spanning from the 14th to
17th century where a time of war and plague came to a close, allowing the European population's perspective to move away from simply surviving and
towards living life to the fullest. According to the Saylor Foundation "The Renaissance transformed nearly all facets of European culture and society."
This allowed for resources to be spent on promoting and commissioning the arts as well as the development of new scientific techniques, resulting in a
consistent theme of humanism throughout the Renaissance period. Humanism is characterized as the study of humans as unique entities among other
creatures, humans possess a conscious and reasoning that marks them for great success or great failure at their own hand. It is this humanistic
philosophy of human flaws that is the basis of Machiavelli's The Prince. Known as the founder of modern politics Machiavelli's most memorable

Then to aid this principle on the appropriate governing style Machiavelli makes a point that dissent is bad: "And these few do not dare to oppose the

The similarity that both Khaldun and Machiavelli posses in their narratives is that in their writing style is based around facts and is not persuaded

Dante And The Road Of Humanism
Dante and the Road to Humanism During the Renaissance, the ideology of humanism became extremely popular. After the black plague people
presumed that God had abandoned them. As a result, they began to search for their own answers through observation and experimentation; this method
was called empiricism. Through this, man began to place himself at the center of the universe instead of God. Individuals began to embrace their own
talents and spend less time worrying about the next life and more living in the current one. Humanism was also developed from a desire to re–live the
Classical time period, or the golden age; therefore, the humanistic education consisted of studies of Greek, Latin, art, music and philosophy. This
contemporary way of thinking inspired many philosophers and writers. Throughout Dante's work he emphasizes the concept of humanism, and it is this
work that influenced many other philosophers including Petrarch and Boccaccio. Dante Alighieri was born in 1265 in Florence, Italy. Dante was an
Italian poet, prose writer, literary theorist, moral philosopher, and political thinker. In the thirteenth century, groups called the Guelfs and the
Ghibellines arose. The Guelfs supported the pope, and around 1290 they divided into two groups, the White and Black Guelfs. Dante was closer to
the White party which was composed of merchants and traders; the Black group consisted of banking families. In 1301 Dante left Florence on a

Encarta Dictionary says that Humanism is a system of thought that centers on human beings and their values, capacities and worth. Encarta also goes
on the say that, in philosophy, humanism is an attitude that emphasizes the dignity and worth of an individual. A basic premise ofhumanism is that
people are rational beings who possess within themselves the capacity for truth and goodness. I see myself as a being a humanist through everyday
life. I always try to see the good in a person when he/she makes me angry or sad, and say I to myself that maybe that person has had a bad day and

Without knowing it, we have all experienced humanism within out lives: working with counselors, psychologists and even teachers. Most of them

something kind that one did. These are all humanistic approaches to life, perhaps not practiced all the time by these people, but practiced nonetheless.

printing press and the guidance of princes. Finally, humanism had a religious impact as well with the protestant reformation and bringing religious

With humanism fatalism could be overcome, man could master his destiny and transform the world. Mankind was the source of confidence as he was
now deemed to be on earth to seek perfection, master nature and overcome narrow thinking.
This cultural revolution combined with the 'new world' discoveries in America and Asia provoked sweeping changes in all fields: philosophy, religion
and science.
Humanistic ideas benefited from the general improvement in living standards underway in Europe as well as the rise in commerce, the invention of the
printing press and efforts of kings and benefactors to promote their spread.
1. Man at the center of the universe
A. The printing of ancient texts
In the XIV and at the beginning of the XV century Europe experienced famines, epidemics and wars. For the church these represented God's
punishment. In order to buttress this interpretation the church relied on a very rigid interpretation of sacred texts with virtually no explanation provided.
In response, the humanists sought alternative explanations that might explain man's place on earth and in his relationship with God. It was in reading
ancient greek and latin texts that they were able to call into question the strict religious grounding so prevalent at the time. The return to ancient texts
was in itself radical as it

Still Alice Humanism Analysis
Linus Pauling said, (that) "Humanism is a philosophy of joyous service for the greater good of all humanity, of application of new ideas of
scientific progress for the benefit of all" (1961). From this speech, it displays the main them of humanism and it also inspires a several ways to many
people. In the novel Still Alice by Lisa Genova 2007, the concept of humanism influences on her perception. This concept is a moral philosophy which
mainly focuses on the value or of human being. It uses the logical reasoning to improve the ability of human being and to understand the world.
Humanism is seemingly to looking forward to science. As a result, in Still Alice novel manifests a lot of elements of humanism whether it be human
rights, rational life and progressive philosophy of life which are three main elements of humanism.
The idea of human rights is one of the significant elements of humanism. For example, John Howland got promoted at work. So, he had to move to
New York while Alice did not want to go to New York. They tried to convert each other but it cannot change their own decisions. Thus, in the end of
the novel (P.325), John moved to New York and Alice still lived in Cambridge. From this, it reveals about human rights and... Show more content on

Views Of Secular Humanism
What is Secular Humanism? It is humanism, with regard to the belief that humanity is capable of morality and self–fulfillment without belief in God.
Christian worldviews are based on the bible, we believe that God created the all. Secular Humanist are critical thinkers, focused on modern beliefs
without having any religious ties. "Many Christians and proponents of secular humanism share a commitment to reason, free inquiry, the separation of
church and state, the ideal of freedom, and moral education; however, they differ in many areas. Secular humanists base their morality and ideas about
justice on critical intelligence unaided by Scripture, which Christians rely on for knowledge concerning right and wrong, good and evil." (3)

When it comes to the question of origin, Christianity and Humanism have opposites beliefs. Christians believe that God is the creator of the universe
and all living things. Humanist believes that there is a scientific reason for our creation.
2.The Question of Identity:
i.Secular Humanist believe that humans evolved from apelike ancestors. To the secularist, we are nothing more than an advanced animal (Weider
& Gutierrez, 2011, p. 57), or a bunch of cells and atoms. ii. Christians believe God created humans in his image and likeness. Humans are lower than
the angels but above all living things. For Humanist, Humans are simply part of evolution and that life is not sacred. We as humans do not have
meaning but in the eyes of a Christian, we are part of God's greatest creation.
3.The Question of Meaning/Purpose – (What is humanity's purpose?)
i.According to the Third Humanist Manifesto, meaning and purpose in life is found in forming relationships, bettering society, and bettering oneself
("Humanism...," 2003). Noebel (2008), however, revealed another goal of secular humanists: to wage war against Christianity in the education system
and political area and replace it their own man–centered philosophies.Compare and contrast this with how the biblical worldview would answer this

Concept Of Humanism In Hamlet
After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages arose. The Middle Ages brought the rise of Islam, the Crusades, the grand cathedrals, and the
gothic structures. Infrastructure was defined with pointed arches that directed the attention of the people to God. The Middle Age era was defined by
determinism; each individual believed he or she had a fated path for heaven or hell. However, once scholars rediscovered the works of antiquity, such
as the reanalysis of rhetoric from ancient philosophers, the Middle Ages transitioned into the Renaissance period. These scholars are known as
humanists. They rejected the idea of determinism and brought in the philosophy of humanism. Individuals focused on themselves and their potential.

These two humanists has helped defined humanism and a created a shift from the attention on God to humans. The rejection of determinism allows
people to have the ability to focus on their potential without believing that a higher power is controlling their life. Even though humanism allowed the
individual to focus on their behavior and develop themself freely, humanism contains limitations as well. Humanism is overly positive. People who
follow the humanism believe that the choices they make using their individual freedom will constantly develop them to perfection, however, that is
not the case for everyone. Moreover, the ideals of Agricola and Petrarch still hold significance today. Agricola's idea of individual freedom is seen
across the world, as people from all countries advocate for their own beliefs and focus on becoming a better individual. During Presidential speeches,
Petrarch's idea of rhetoric is present in many speeches to obtain more voters. Not only is humanism prevalent today, but it also has created a step
towards existentialism. Existentialism follows the humanistic idea that humans should focus more on themself rather than on God, however, it goes
more in depth and wraps around the idea of existence before essence. Existentialism focuses on humans

Humanism In The Renaissance
Arguably the greatest and longest impacting movement brought about by the forward thinkers of the Renaissance was humanism. Humanism was a
cultural and intellectual movement that emphasized the human potential to attain excellence through direct study of the literature, art, and civilization
of the classical Greek and Roman societies (Merriam–Webster). The scholars and believers in humanism sought to change the course of society away
from the narrow pedantry of medieval scholasticism and utilitarianism. Humanism was a basic desire for every citizen to be able to speak with
eloquence and read and write with clarity, so that common citizens were capable of engaging in the civic life of their communities (Gray). The
movement also emphasized the value of a human being as well as the importance of rational thought rather than blind faith in spiritualism or
superstition. It also pushed people to explore human desires and pleasures while also enriching their minds. The influential nature of humanism was far
reaching and most notable for its effects on Renaissance art, literature, and philosophy.
To begin with, medieval art as well as artists were primarily controlled by the church, with artists receiving the majority of their patronage through the
Catholic church (Abrahams). This is because artists were not seen as celebrities or of individual importance like they were during the Renaissance, so
consequently only nobles or the wealthy were able to purchase custom work

Christians believe we were created to worship God and to be in fellowship with him (Rev 4:11). Also He declares that we were also created to have

The Renaissance and Humanism
You may wonder about, "The Renaissance" and its relationship to another term, "humanism" which fits into the same time period. If you check the

literary culture." (My definitions come from Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary). According to that definition we should all be humanists.

Humanism is the belief that man has beauty, worth, and dignity. During the Middle Ages between 3rd to the 13th century, the life and culture are
primarily focused on the church and religion. However, towards the beginning of the 14th century, the power of the church began to greatly decline.
This decline was the main reason for the development of humanism. As people become less interested about God, the afterlife, and the saints. They
become more interested about themselves, their natural world and here in now.
Many historians believe there are two main causes of this decline. The first one was the bubonic plague. It was the Black Death in Europe that killed

Incidentally, it can be reminded of a well known advice of Vivekananda to his disciples that India needs a holy man, who can inspire others to heaven
by playing football than studying Bhagbadgita. India is a country where people are very much dependent on religious doctrines than keeping faith in
the truth of hard work or 'karma'. Too much obsession with religion only blocks the potentialities of a man's creativity. It makes the women folk
prejudiced and their counterpart aggressive. The Indian concept of Humanism, therefore, believes in secular thinking and stresses on selfless service,

Humanism In The Renaissance
The beginning of the 1350s sparked a new, yet controversial era in northern Italy known as the Renaissance, which influenced a change in intellectual,
artistic, and cultural life. People achieved time and money through the thriving trade routes of the great Mediterranean, enabling many to focus on
living a simple, comfortable lifestyle with materialistic pleasures and develop a deep appreciation of the arts, rather than solely focusing on survival.
Excess time also provoked educated Italians to contemplate new notions of human nature, plans for education, and concepts of political rule. Those
who were interested exposed themselves to classical manuscripts, one of which, Francesco Petrarch, who believed classical texts would bring a new
golden age of intellectual achievement. Petrarch's theory turned into a form of education that studied the works of Latin and Greek authors, known as
modern day "liberal arts." As education became prominent, those who studied the arts identified themselves as humanists and their education as
humanism, defined as the devotion to literary culture and the belief that human nature and achievements were worthy of contemplation. As many began
to acquire a vast array of knowledge, views of religion altered from the beloved Christianity values to revealing slight hints of Neoplatonism, viewed

Humanism In Renaissance Art
Humanism, as a concept emerging from the Renaissance, can be thought of as a shift away from focus on the divine to the importance of the person.
Humanism stresses the potential for good in humans, as well as an emphasis on human needs and rationality. The classical revival of Ancient Greek
brought about these ideology and stylistic changes during the Renaissance through the collection, translation, and distribution of ancient texts at the
end of the 13th century. In the beginning of the 14th century Francesco Petrarch wrote biographies on famous Roman, which spearheaded the interest
in human achievement and potential. "Man is the measure of things" became the catchphrase for this movement as it spread through multiple

Humanism is a philosophical and ethical stance on the value of human beings. The idea of humanism started around the early to mid–14th century
starting with Petrarch, who is considered to most, as the "father of humanism." Petrarch's expertise in the promotion of this study earned him the name
as the first great humanist. Humanism first started to become popular in the mid–15th century though during the Italian Renaissance due to many factors
but at the same humanism was spreading all throughout Europe and became increasingly popular in Northern Europe, but didn't spread as fast. With

Humanism In The Middle Ages

  • 1. Humanism In The Middle Ages This class has taught me that "humanism can be defined as examining the creative and intellectual contributions made by every culture that stresses human logic, values, and scientific method (Humanities Through the Ages). When I think of the middle Ages, I envision romantic images of knights in shining armor, magnificent castles, and glorious cathedrals. But the Middle Ages, (medieval) was much more. There were rise of cities, economy and money that started in Florence Italy, Mediterranean empires, the townspeople benefited from the rise but the rise damaged the nobles. The rise of nations, crises of the church, new military development caused a decline in the medieval period. Shortly after the Black Death (Bubonic and the Plagues) a new period ... • 2. Machiavelli's Impact On Humanism Humanism was an intellectual movement that had spread during the renaissance. Humanism had a great impact on the way people thought as well as education especially when it came to writing , it change the society and became a way of life. Because of the renaissance there was a great flux in the numbers of schools and universities and the number of students willing to attend them, the universities and schools permitted young adults and adults to increase their knowledge in many areas such as; philosophy, theology, history and much later on anatomy. The schools not only taught lessons but also invited discussion in class, permitting the students to argument with each other and their professors challenging and accepting each man's theories and... Cesare Borgia).Machiavelli was a very resourceful man , in fact the reason why he had written and given The Prince as a gift was because he had wanted to help lord Lorenzo de Medici with the management of the city of Florence and gain his favor despite their differences both men shared similar traits. In it, Machiavelli analysis all the different types of states and principalities, and identifies things such as, how they were created, he also analyzed different monarchies and how they ruled. Machiavelli even went as far wondering how these city/states could be reclaimed and how they should then be ruled. Machiavelli seemed to be one of the few who did not believe or even discuss the idea and possibility of a "utopian world existing" given the circumstances of where he was settled, a place in constant yet subtle quarrel there was really much to dream about and this "realism" was shared by many if not all in the state of Florence. He believes that if you try and change the way things are and begin to pursue personal ambitions that could lead to your own downfall, and again we could use the example of the Medici's , especially in the Case of Lorenzo the magnificent , although he was from the wealthiest merchant family , he should not have taken upon himself the responsibility of ruler or overseer of the city of Florence( dictator), had he just stuck to being a wealthy merchant he and his family would not have to flee the city of Florence. Hence, The Prince is a classic literary example of Renaissance writing in the ideas it conveys and how it conveys them. The renaissance in Florence created the opportunity of improving its politics and making changes to its ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Importance Of Humanism Humanism has influenced our culture for over 600 years. First coined by Friedrich Immanuel Niethammer, the contextual definition of humanism has fluctuated over time. Although the definition has changed the basic principle of humanism stands. Humanism is a doctrine that promotes the importance of the human person. Through periods such as the renaissance, the age of enlightenment, the age of revolutions, the nationalistic times, and modern day, the meaning of the word humanism, as well as its influence on people, has changed. Before the Renaissance, Francesco Petrarca, better known as Petrarch, was "the first to put into words the notion that the centuries between the fall of Rome and the present had been the age of Darkness" (Paul Johnson). He saw the darkness of the past and worked to steer humanity into the right path. He is credited with being the 'father of humanism" as well as starting the Renaissance movement. Humanism was based on the study of Classical Greek and Roman literature in the form of the humanities (philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language). Petrarch searched for lost Latin manuscripts that would improve the understanding of the Greek time period. Humanists, including Petrarch, believed intellectuals should refrain from the public to focus on their studies. Artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci emphasized humanism and publicized it in paintings such as the vitruvian man. This painting preached Protagoras's idea that "man is the ... • 4. Secular Humanism Essay The fall 1986 Tennessee court decision on alleged "secular humanism" in Holt, Rinehart, Winston textbooks illustrates the continuing controversy over that term. The term "secular humanism" is used today to castigate a wide spectrum of our populous. The derision with which the term is used suggests images of horrid, grotesque monsters. In reality, however, the term merely consists of two sorely misunderstood words. In combination they suggest a virus, though singly they are innocuous, if not healthy. "Secular" means having to do with this world, or that which is temporal rather than spiritual. It suggests something that is not specifically pertaining to religion, or that which is apart from God, although not necessarily opposed to ... Humanism describes the emphasis that was revived in the Renaissance when the Liberal Arts were used to distinguish man from beasts. Through letters––or scholarship––was sought a rebirth of spirit and spiritual freedom and justification of the claim to rational autonomy. In essence, the Renaissance was a revival of the capacities and powers of the ancients. The version of "secular humanism" expressed in the "Humanist Manifesto" (I––1933 and II––1973) is actually naturalism, wherein there is no qualitative difference between man and animal, nor any supernatural. Man supposedly evolved from lower forms of life and does not possess a soul. According to "secular humanism," man does have reason and will, which he should exercise to realize human personality. The Humanist Manifestos also explicitly deny the sinful nature of man. This form of secular humanism is actually a repudiation of true humanistic values. The secular perversion of humanism is anthropocentrism (self–expression/affirmation and human autonomy), moral relativism, and atheism. A Christian world view contradicts this version of humanism. A key distinction between naturalistic "secular humanism" and Christianity would be the view of life after death. "Secular humanism," being limited to this world, would not acknowledge

  • 6. The Influence Of Humanism Have you ever wondered why nowadays there are less less people going to church or even supporting God? 500 years ago new ideas started to spread throughout europe, ideas that man doesn't need God. This idea is called Humanism. In Humanism humans are more important than god. Humanist solve problem in "human ways" instead of resourcing to a god. During the renaissance Humanism develop and spread throughout europe. Some of the most known artist, writers, and even religious figures influence humanism of the renaissance. Even though today you don't hear the word humanism a lot it's still a major influence in today's society. So why did humanistic ideas become so popular? One of the main reason is the renaissance. Humanism develop so much during the Renaissance because a lot of influential people believed and even spread humanism. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Allentown museum stated the following about the Vitruvian Man; "Man is the measure of all things" (Kintzer and Wetterlund). Since Humanism is about appreciating humans this clearly shows humanism, what greater honor can you get than being in the middle of everything. Everything has a size this shows how man instead of god is connected to everything physical in this world. Likewise Tom Ashbrook, an award winning journalist, wrote this about the Vitruvian Man, "symbol of man in the universe, man as the universe"(Tom Ashbrook). This is an obvious example of humanism since it shows how man can be free of god, can be in the universe with only himself and other humans, and even be the universe ourselves. Da Vinci's view on humanism was clearly implemented on his paintings, not only this but they undoubtedly spread throughout Europe and later on the world, which explains to us why most of us have already since this ... • 7. Humanism In The Renaissance Europeans emerging into the new era of the Renaissance came upon the deep interest in Latin and Greek literature, whom later took the name "humanists". Humanism was a new education plan that valued evidence and reason and was influenced by ancient literature from a time when scholars like Plato and Socrates based their teachings with scientific evidence rather than religious teaching. In the effect of the Bubonic plague, many Europeans lost faith when they were battered with the epidemic that drastically decreased the population and in effect, doubted the church and it's teachings. As the medieval time period reached it's end, society (mainly scholars at first) became more educated of secular ideas. Therefore, experimented with debates and wrote texts to defend a broader education system not only based on medieval church teachings (Of course, inventions like the printing press in the 1440s highly impacted the spread of teachings and texts which allowed the idea to become more widely known in a shorter period of time than was attempted by past scholars). The impact and growth of secularism and individualism in effect of humanism from the 1400s to 1700s rests highly on humanists like Raphael, Marsilio Ficino and .....who emphasized the teachings of humanism corresponding with the study of ancient texts which modified the educational system and governmental bodies and influenced a change in cultural aspects affecting Renaissance art based on their classical and contemporary ... • 8. Northern Or Erasmian Humanism Humanism is "a system of thought that rejects religious beliefs and centres on humans and their values, capacities, and worth" (HMC, 2009). THIS IS WRONG LOL Desiderius Erasmus was a Dutch Renaissance humanist and priest, he was born in 1466, was educated in religious schools and then attended the University of Paris in 1494. He was part of a religious order but later became a humanist during the Northern Renaissance, where Erasmus(1529) emphasised on the importance early childhood education as he spoke of in his work De pueris instituendis (On the Education of Children). Although not its' only focus, "The idea of education, in its broadest sense, resided at the heart of the intellectual movement we now know as Northern or Erasmian Humanism" ... Parrish(2010) notes that Erasmus had a very sincere and important belief that there are women whom are suitable pupils for the humanist methods of education; as Erasmus(CWE, 1233:297) believes that in his understanding of the morality of gender roles, idleness and improper amusements (pastimes) are hazardous to a female's virtue and thus, the humanist education of women is desirable as it is the education of moral principles. FURTHER EXPLAINATION In conclusion, Erasmus and Erasmian Humanism is very focused on the importance of early childhood education and that morals need to be taught to children. Parrish(2010, 601) noted that the ideas of the Erasmian Humanism movement came to change the social world of early Europe, and greatly influenced it's educational practices. TOO RUSHED, FIX ... • 9. The Philosophical Point Of Humanism intellect.gif (9933 bytes) Renaissance Humanism Humanism is the term generally applied to the predominant social philosophy and intellectual and literary currents of the period from 1400 to 1650. The return to favor of the pagan classics stimulated the philosophy of secularism, the appreciation of worldly pleasures, and above all intensified the assertion of personal independence and individual expression. Zeal for the classics was a result as well as a cause of the growing secular view of life. Expansion of trade, growth of prosperity and luxury, and widening social contacts generated interest in worldly pleasures, in spite of formal allegiance to ascetic Christian doctrine. Men thus affected –– the humanists –– welcomed classical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The present world became an end in itself instead of simply preparation of a world to come. Indeed, as the age of Renaissance humanism wore on, the distinction between this world (the City of Man) and the next (the City of God) tended to disappear. Beauty was believed to afford at least some glimpse of a transcendental existence. This goes far to explain the humanist cult of beauty and makes plain that humanism was, above everything else, fundamentally an aesthetic movement. Human experience, man himself, tended to become the practical measure of all things. The ideal life was no longer a monastic escape from society, but a full participation in rich and varied human relationships. The dominating element in the finest classical culture was aesthetic rather than supernatural or scientific. In the later Middle Ages urban intellectuals were well on the road to the recovery of an aesthetic and secular view of life even before the full tide of the classical revival was felt. It was only natural, then, that pagan literature, with its emotional and intellectual affinity to the new world view, should accelerate the existing drift toward secularism and stimulate the cult of humanity, the worship of beauty, and especially the aristocratic attitude. Almost everywhere, humanism began as a rather pious, timid, and conservative drift away from medieval Christianity and ended in bold independence of medieval tradition. ... In Renaissance, people begin to show the love of other things, such as a portrait, a painting of landscape and goods in their daily life. Compared to the period of Medieval and Renaissance, we can see the value of humanity is raising up quickly, and take over the critical social status that Divinity has in Medieval. • 13. Humanism In The Odyssey Throughout history there have been a series of fundamental changes in culture and society that marked the passage of the Middle Ages and the Modern Age. This is where, a phenomenon that changed the ideology of human beings was born, Humanism. Humanism seeks to exalt all human qualities, rediscovering man to give a rational meaning to life inspired by the classical era. For all these reasons, this gave great importance to philosophy, art, literature, and the history of the ancient era. However, throughout the history of humanism, they created many works that marked this ideology. For example, the work Iliad and the Odyssey written by the Greek poet Homer. Perhaps the most representative of this advance towards rationality and humanism, is the fact that Ulysses rejected during his trip the possibility of becoming an immortal and free of the sufferings that mark the existence of man. However, he preferred to be a simple human. He did not want to be neither god nor animal. He wanted to be a man who achieved his purpose and thus became a hero. It is really amazing how humanism has taught us so much over time. It has allowed us to analyze the behavior and the way in which we perform in an objective manner. It is important, in order not to decay into a great cultural void, to constantly remember what is considered to make us more human and that brings us closer to each other and to ourselves. It is necessary to know the history and learn from it. You can see that humanism and progress go hand in hand if we talk about a better future. There is a constant process of leaving behind to move forward, of renewal and perseverance. We must leave behind our mistakes, but not forget them, this is one of the most important lessons that the ancestors of humanity have left as a legacy for the current generation and for the next. Therefore, you do not have to sit still and inert just watching passively how things are given and do nothing for them. Everyone must do their part to achieve the common goal. Humanism has undergone changes and transformations throughout history to reach its current form. What we live today is the fruit of humanism. More than a stream of discoveries, we know that we can change many situations based on our actions. Nauert was Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Missouri, Columbia and his specialty was Renaissance– Reformation Europe. Nauert illustrates how humanism affected religion, platonic revival, and magic, beliefs on human nature, popular culture, and Renaissance art. The art of printing helped ignite the growth of humanism and enables humanists to share their ideas. Nauert argues that the humanists' criticism of texts in the fields of law, medicine, natural science, and theology allowed them to assume control over these fields. They gained this control because they claimed that their critical methods revealed whether a document was authentic, furthermore, they rejected documents that they discovered were forged or misinterpreted. In Florence during the mid–fifteenth–century, humanists became less interested in civic humanism, and grew interested in spiritual, religious, and philosophical questions. Nauert suggests that NiccolГІ Machiavelli was the sixteenth–century heir of Florentine civic humanism. Nauert illustrates how Renaissance art was connected to humanism. He writes, "The veneration felt by humanists for ancient works of art was widely regarded as a rediscovery of the principles of the principles a spirit of ancient art, a three–sided influence among ancient work, modern artist, and modern humanist was only natural" (91). The papacy also became patrons of humanistic art and scholarship; and their support facilitated the expansion of humanism. The achievements of Renaissance Italy did begin to lessen in the sixteenth century; and the influence of humanism faded, but did not perish. Italian humanism was transported across the Alps and ignited humanist movements in Germany, France, England, and Spain. The basic elements of northern humanism derived from Italian humanism; however, in each country that humanism spread to the people adapted or altered the elements of Italian humanism in order to fulfill their needs. The main one of these ideas being humanism, or that the best that a man can be is greater than the idea of theology. The Italians began to spread this idea and it began to grow. The Italians decided that the best way to express and spread the idea of humanism during the Renaissance was through their sculptures and paintings. First, humanism is visible in many paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance time period, one example of this is Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. The Mona Lisa is a very simple painting as far as what is shown, it is a woman seated in a chair and her upper torso and up is shown and she is sitting in front of a very scenic background with mountains, trees, water, and the sky. Literally meaning "rebirth" the Renaissance is a time period of discovery and reason, where the perspective of the masses went from a concern for one's existence beyond death back down to earth to the study and the idealism of the individual. The Renaissance consisted of a period spanning from the 14th to 17th century where a time of war and plague came to a close, allowing the European population's perspective to move away from simply surviving and towards living life to the fullest. According to the Saylor Foundation "The Renaissance transformed nearly all facets of European culture and society." This allowed for resources to be spent on promoting and commissioning the arts as well as the development of new scientific techniques, resulting in a consistent theme of humanism throughout the Renaissance period. After the black plague people presumed that God had abandoned them. As a result, they began to search for their own answers through observation and experimentation; this method was called empiricism. Through this, man began to place himself at the center of the universe instead of God. Individuals began to embrace their own talents and spend less time worrying about the next life and more living in the current one. Humanism was also developed from a desire to re–live the Classical time period, or the golden age; therefore, the humanistic education consisted of studies of Greek, Latin, art, music and philosophy. Humanism was a cultural and intellectual movement that emphasized the human potential to attain excellence through direct study of the literature, art, and civilization of the classical Greek and Roman societies (Merriam–Webster). The scholars and believers in humanism sought to change the course of society away from the narrow pedantry of medieval scholasticism and utilitarianism. Humanism was a basic desire for every citizen to be able to speak with eloquence and read and write with clarity, so that common citizens were capable of engaging in the civic life of their communities (Gray). The movement also emphasized the value of a human being as well as the importance of rational thought rather than blind faith in spiritualism or superstition. It also pushed people to explore human desires and pleasures while also enriching their minds. • 34. The Prince Humanism Essay At the turn of the 16th century, the Italian Peninsula was marred in brutal conflicts. Nations across Europe, such as France, Spain and the Holy Roman Empire constantly raged wars to keep each other out of the numerous territories around Italy. During this tumultuous time period, a man named Niccolo Machiavelli studied in Florence and witnessed firsthand the issues that rulers often faced while attempting to conquer these Italian cities. His experiences prompted him to write a literary work on his opinion of the ruling class, and his philosophy on how rulers should rule over their subjects. However, his novel The Prince, is an interesting outlier of the time, as parts of it contradict the popular social view of Humanism, which focused on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 35. Humanism In Bhuli Pisima Incidentally, it can be reminded of a well known advice of Vivekananda to his disciples that India needs a holy man, who can inspire others to heaven by playing football than studying Bhagbadgita. India is a country where people are very much dependent on religious doctrines than keeping faith in the truth of hard work or 'karma'. Too much obsession with religion only blocks the potentialities of a man's creativity. It makes the women folk prejudiced and their counterpart aggressive. The Indian concept of Humanism, therefore, believes in secular thinking and stresses on selfless service, practice of which can remove all narrowness of mind and can ensure progress and development. The story of Bhuli Pisima as the narrator illustrates is a subject that defies the charisma of power relations in any society that infect the sociopolitical practices surrounding the division–strategy. Selfless service and a deeply rooted sense of goodness make the narrator's aunt, Bhuli Pisima, ever memorable to her. Bhuli pisima is her Pisi's sister–in–law. A widow at an early age, Bhuli Pisima has wonder thirst. If she is eventually in a long distance train without a ticket and is asked to get off the train, she has no hesitation to spend the night on the platform. Wherever she goes, she builds a strong bond of humanity with the people around her. She uses to say, "People are so marvelous" (33; ch.6). Despite being directly affected by the violence of the riots, she never loses her faith in humanity. She often speaks about the philosophical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 36. Humanism In The Renaissance The beginning of the 1350s sparked a new, yet controversial era in northern Italy known as the Renaissance, which influenced a change in intellectual, artistic, and cultural life. People achieved time and money through the thriving trade routes of the great Mediterranean, enabling many to focus on living a simple, comfortable lifestyle with materialistic pleasures and develop a deep appreciation of the arts, rather than solely focusing on survival. Excess time also provoked educated Italians to contemplate new notions of human nature, plans for education, and concepts of political rule. Those who were interested exposed themselves to classical manuscripts, one of which, Francesco Petrarch, who believed classical texts would bring a new golden age of intellectual achievement. Petrarch's theory turned into a form of education that studied the works of Latin and Greek authors, known as modern day "liberal arts." As education became prominent, those who studied the arts identified themselves as humanists and their education as humanism, defined as the devotion to literary culture and the belief that human nature and achievements were worthy of contemplation. As many began to acquire a vast array of knowledge, views of religion altered from the beloved Christianity values to revealing slight hints of Neoplatonism, viewed through famous paintings of the Renaissance such as the "Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli, depicting the contentious pagan gods. • 37. Secular Humanism Today Secular humanism is appropriate in today's society because it motivates its followers to accept and secure what they believe to be true. In fact, their argument is based solely on the application of reason, lessons learned from history, and lastly, their personal experience which form an ethical moral foundation to create a meaningful life. Although, secular humanism opposes how Christians view the Bible that does not defined them as being an anti–religious group of people, they generally encompass nontheists and are classified as non–religious because of their approach to life. Rod Farmer suggests, "Ten years ago few American educators had ever heard the term secular humanism; today the term pops up in numerous political and educational debates ... The belief is that we only have one life and for that reason we should value and respect it. The value of humanism have to do with reason morality social attitudes, meaning and purpose. The belief that death ends it all comes from an old idea that ancient philosophers already had a concept of. The belief was that the mind grows with the body tied to physical being nothing is permeate or eternal. Another key belief held by Humanists is that it is part of human nature that they are moral creatures not that we are necessarily moral in the sense of good, but that we all with the exception of a few psychopaths and severely autistic people have the capacity to think in moral terms and cannot escape from doing so. • 40. Humanism In Renaissance Art Humanism, as a concept emerging from the Renaissance, can be thought of as a shift away from focus on the divine to the importance of the person. Humanism stresses the potential for good in humans, as well as an emphasis on human needs and rationality. The classical revival of Ancient Greek brought about these ideology and stylistic changes during the Renaissance through the collection, translation, and distribution of ancient texts at the end of the 13th century. In the beginning of the 14th century Francesco Petrarch wrote biographies on famous Roman, which spearheaded the interest in human achievement and potential. The idea of humanism started around the early to mid–14th century starting with Petrarch, who is considered to most, as the "father of humanism." Later on, in the novel Machiavelli goes on to focus on what qualities a prince should have and how virtu plays a role in making a proper prince. Although a short novel, it is Machiavelli's most widely known work and is responsible for creating a negative view on rulers/politicians and also making it seem like anything you do, even immoral, is justifiable if the end goal is worth it. Machiavelli writes "He who neglects what is done for what ought to be done, sooner effects his ruin than his preservation" showing that the use of immoral means is justifiable when the end goal is survival and glory.
