Advantage And Disadvantages Of Wind Energy
1.Introduction As the demand for energy rises, the rate at which energy is consumed exceeds the rate at which energy is generated, resulting in rolling
power outages. The report will focus on wind energy, highlighting its viability and reliability as a solution to South Africa's current energy crisis. This
report will give a general overview of renewable energy, focusing on the: definition, brief history and background, types of renewable energy, and
current energy demands. Wind energy will then be investigated, highlighting: what it is, the generation of electricity from it, the applications of wind
energy, and its reliability. The advantages and disadvantages of wind energy will then be discussed. Wind energy in the context of South Africa

Advantages and Disadvantages of Wind Energy 4.1.Advantages 4.1.1.Wind Wind Energy is a 'clean' and sustainable resource. It is classified as a
'clean' and sustainable resource as it does not pollute the environment with poisonous and harmful emissions when being manipulated to generate
electrical energy. 4.1.2.Wind Turbines Wind Turbines are space efficient machines that are also cost effective, as they have low, long
–term, operational
costs. Wind farms can be built on existing farms, which would then benefit the economy of rural areas as the owners of the farms could rent out a
small portion of land for wind farms and still work the rest of the farmland. 4.2.Disadvantages 4.2.1.Wind Wind is unpredictable and fluctuates on an
hourly basis, making it difficult to harness and provide a constant amount of electrical power. Although wind energy is the most cost–effective form of
renewable energy resources, it is still more expensive than that of the manipulation of fossil fuels. 4.2.2.Wind Turbines Wind Turbines are costly to
erect and operate on a short–term basis, where a single, commercial–scale Wind Turbine costs roughly $3 to $4 million dollars (approximately R34 608
000.00) (How much do wind turbines cost?,

Renewable Energy Within Scotland And Onshore Wind Farms
5.3.2Objective B
"Provide a background on renewable energy in Scotland with specific focus on wind farm developments on peatlands".
The author was able to review a wide range of literature, on renewable energy in Scotland and onshore wind farms in particular. The author firstly
established why there was a need for renewable energy by reviewing literature on climate change and how traditional electricity generation by power
stations were recognised as having a detrimental impact to the environmental, as they were seen to contribute significantly to global warming by the
levels of CO2 emission. The majority of wind farms in Scotland were found to be located in areas where peatlands were also found. Objective A and B
highlighted a strong correlation between climate change, wind farm developments and peatlands. Although wind farms are recognised for their ability
to displace CO2 by generating electricity from a renewable source, wind farms constructed on areas of peatlands can cause the peat to decompose,
which results in the release of CO2 to the atmosphere. As highlighted within chapter two, climate change and renewable energy targets for the UK and
Scotland have been set within the European Union's Renewable Energy Directive 2009/28/EC. What will be interesting to see in the next couple of
years is, whether the UK and Scotland's Government will revise these targets given that they are in the process of leaving the EU.

The Google Self-Driving Automobile
The Google Self–Driving Automobile
In 2010, Google broadcasted that they created an archetype of a car that can drive itself; its purpose, to avert collisions, allow citizens more time, and
cut down on harmful pollutants that vehicles produce (Poczter & Jankovic, 2014). The heart of the self–driving automobile is lasers that are mounted on
the roof of a modified Toyota Prius that produces a precise three–dimensional atlas of the area surrounding the car. Furthermore, the automobile is
outfitted with four radars, and another laser around the vehicle that allows it to precisely create a 3–D map of its surroundings (Poczter & Jankovic,
2014). The vehicle calculates the laser dimensions with high–resolution maps of the globe, which allows it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Polaris Project, Liberty Asia, and La Strada International are anti–trafficking organizations who provide imperative assistance to victims that need help
in the United States, Europe, and the Mekong Delta Region (Fighting Human Trafficking, 2013). Not only will this collaboration benefit the victims, it
will also advance the system by significantly increasing the amount of beneficial data being shared. The anti–trafficking hotline project collects
information from area hotlines, creating unison procedures, which in turn will generate an anti–trafficking approach that will develop similar models
that concentrate on abolition, deterrence, and safeguarding victims (Fighting Human Trafficking, 2013). The data collected will allow the
organizations to analyze which methods are most effective at ending slavery, and what areas are experiencing an escalation, or if the decline in one
region corresponds with an increase in another nearby country (Fighting Human Trafficking, 2013).
The purpose behind Google's Global Impact Awards is to aid with pioneering individuals or groups to discover resolutions to large and difficult
problems (Alcindor, 2013). Part of the 3 million dollar grant will be used for travel, finding additional hotlines, and constructing more platforms
needed to share data (Alcindor, 2013). By creating a coalition of anti–trafficking hotlines, it will create a larger safety

Final term Paper for ECE 5343 – Power Systems Engineering
Abstract: This report contains details on the reactive power compensation techniques for fixed–speed wind turbines as well as the inherent reactive
power support provided by the variable–speed wind turbines. This paper also reviews the latest grid codes and requirements for reactive power
support by wind farms. In the end this paper provides quantitative calculations for determining the reactive power compensation needed for unity power
factor operation by a fixed–speed squirrel cage induction generator based wind turbines.

1. Introduction Since the last decade, there has been an increased growth in the electricity production through wind power [8]. Such increasing
penetration levels of wind power in to the total generation mix has raised several concerns to the transmission system operators. Some of the issues
related to large scale grid integration of wind power causing concern to the transmission system operators are low voltage fault through capability,
voltage support during large disturbances and unity power factor operation [7]. This has made the regulators and transmission system operators to
introduce new grid standards and requirements for wind farms to make sure the

Windmills: Hero Of Alexandria
Windmills date as far back as 200 BC. The first windmill was known as "Hero of Alexandria", located in what is now known as Iran, but was not too

Virginia Beach 's Offshore Wind Farm Solution Essay
Virginia Beach, Virginia is making strides toward cleaner energy production, despite the threat of a coal–fired power plant. Coal–fired power plants,
such as the Cypress Creek Power Station intended to be built in Surry County, Virginia, are environmentally harmful yet most cities are continuing to
depend on them for a reliable and steady output of energy. This local environmental issue is a dilemma that many cities throughout the world are also
experiencing. My study demonstrates how cities faced with these predicaments can find practical solutions for providing energy while being
environmentally friendly. Scientific research along with the analysis of two scholarly articles explain the threats of coal–fired power plants on humans'
health and the environment as well as the advantages and disadvantages of practical solutions. Based upon proven facts and research, I have provided
my opinion that Virginia Beach's offshore wind farm solution is a suitable choice for that specific geographic region. What is not a suitable solution is
the natural gas–fueled power plant that is currently in the process of being constructed. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that there is no
one–size–fits–all solution to providing energy. Air Pollution in Virginia Beach; an Environmental Issue An environmental issue affecting the city of

Wind Farms Beneficial To The Economy
Wind farms are growing in number in the modern economy, they are also becoming controversial as to whether or not the farms provide a
beneficial source of jobs. There are some people who argue that the wind farms are beneficial to the economy by providing jobs, but there are also
some people who feel that the wind farms are not beneficial to the economy. In Nancy Fol bre's words, "A recent Pew Foundation report estimates
that the number of them grew nearly two and a half times faster than overall jobs between 1998 and 2007" (Folbre). Folbre is saying that the jobs
are beneficial to the economy because the wind farms are providing more jobs than any other job. However, in BjГёrn Lomborg's words, "If a
sustainability adviser quits a concrete... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Folbre's article the author brings up a very good point, if we were to look at the new wind farms as a good thing we can realize that the wind
farms are helping people get jobs and also help save the environment by creating more "green" energy. Although, in the words of Gulen, written by
Lomborg: "respected individuals do not always see the new jobs as a good thing: "Gulen concluded that job creation 'cannot be defended as another
benefit' of well–meaning green policies." (Lomborg). In Lomborg's article the author referred to the college professor Gulen as someone who did
not agree with the new jobs. Gulen's statement was not truly correct because the new jobs created would be a benefit because it allows people who
don't have jobs to get jobs from the people who decide to leave their current job to go work at the wind farms. Either way, the wind farms are a
win–win for people and jobs; however, there will be a moment in time when the economy falls because of the people leaving their current jobs, but
there will be a rise in the economy because as one job gets lost two more jobs can get filled, a job at the wind farms and a job at the place where the
position was vacated. The jobs that are being added are a good addition to the

Where to Build a Wind Farm? – Geography Assessment
In my opinion, the best place to build a wind farm in Cumbria is off the shore of Allonby. This is because; it has a lot of advantages which suit it,
for being the best place to build a wind farm; as of its location and ingenious ideology behind it. Moreover, it is an offshore wind farm, which means
that it will benefit a lot of homes, as at the sea it is extremely windy. Thus, a lot of electricity is generated, providing a lot of electricity than usual.
However, some people would say that, because it is near a town, it'll be very noisy and distracting to tourists and residents, and will even be an
'eyesore.' On the contrary, the wind farm will be 3 metres away from the land, so there is the least possibility of noise pollution and... Show more

However, it has marshland, and a wind farm cannot be built as of its instability and it is close to a city (Carlisle) which means that, it can possibly
disturb tourism activity or increase it, and create noise problems. Also, it would obstruct birds, ecosystems and plants. Besides, Anthorn was on the
coast and had some roads, so cars can get through for maintenance, however it had some radio masts and it would interfere with radio signals and
be an additional 'eyesore.' Moreover, Skiddaw could've had the winning chance, but some factors limited it. It had high ground and plenty of spaces,
as there were essentially no buildings and it would not affect anyone in terms of noise, as it was on a high mountain. However, it is part of the Lake
District and the famous town Bassenthwaite is next to it; and it can be very unattractive. However, as it being closer to a town, it can provide jobs.
Albeit, it cannot be accessible to any transport, as it will be high on a mountain; but a helicopter can be the solution. However, the problem cannot be
sorted out as thorough.
Wind energy is an excellent alternative energy source, as it doesn't harm the environment – it just uses wind to drive the turbines, which spin around to
drive the generator to generate electricity. As for crude oil and fossil fuels, they are running out and also harm the environment. However, this clean
energy can very easily be generated. UK has a lot of wind energy up in its highlands, so is ideal for

Human Health Problems Caused By Air Pollution
Next, there are human health problems caused by air pollution from the burning of coal and oil. Air pollution can cause long–term damage including
many diseases and a range of short–term respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, throat irritation, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.
Children, seniors, and asthmatics are most vulnerable to this air pollution. Miners, especially, are prone to black lung disease. Another cost of fossil
fuels includes damage to land from coal mining. It causes deforestation which can easily endanger many species and causes an increase of carbon
dioxide due to the lack of plants that photosynthesize. Coal mining also releases toxic amounts of minerals and heavy metals into the soil and water. It
can ignite coal fires which burn for decades and release greenhouse gases into the air, slowly destroying the ozone. Mining releases methane, a
greenhouse gas twenty times more powerful than carbon dioxide. The burning of nonrenewable energy can also cause elevated levels of hydrogen
ions, increasing the acidity of rain; this can have harmful effects on plants, animals, and infrastructure. Over the last one hundred and fifty years, the
use of fossil fuels have resulted in more than a twenty five percent increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The global temperature
has increased by one degree Fahrenheit over the same amount of time. It may not seem like much, but this is detrimental to the entirety of the planet,

Potential Energy and Wind Power
Walking outside, wind blows towards your face, can you imagine the wind can transfer to electricity? Majority people in China have the idea of the
coal–burning as a way to produce electricity. However, coal is a limited resource nowadays. Scientists had found out several alternative ways to
produce energy, for example–wind power. Wind power can bring us many benefits because wind is an infinite resource; wind power is environmentally
friendly while wind farm is also a low–tax project. Wind power, a new way to create energy, has become more and more popular.
Scientists, nowadays, are concerned about the limitation of fossil fuels worldwide. It means some country whose electricity is most produced by
fossil fuels may have the energy crisis in the future. However, other countries, use wind as an energy resource, not have to worry about the
situation because wind power is infinite. What actually happens is sun's heat causes the air to warm up in patches. In a result, some patches of air
become warm while other patches remain cold. Hot air gets lighter in weight hence leaves it place and move towards upside, colder air patches are
bit heavier there for their rushes to fill up the space that is left unoccupied by heated air, and this process generates wind. Because the sun will not be
destroyed in a short time, we will have to wind for such a long time. Thus, wind power has infinite source supply (Solarpowernotes). The infinity of
wind makes wind power a endless energy

A Short Note On The Funding II, Inc.
Viento Funding II, Inc. ("Viento" or the "Borrower") owns controlling interest in a portfolio of three operating wind power generating plants (the
"Projects") located in Nebraska, New Mexico, and Texas. The Projects have an aggregate net capacity of 361 MW and achieved COD between
December 2005 and April 2009. The Projects are fully contracted under three Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). Each of the PPAs has a 20

term with the earliest expiring in December 2025. The energy off–takers are Southwestern Public Service Company ("SPSC") (A–/Baa1/BBB; SFS
Equivalent 4+) and Nebraska Public Power District ("NPPD") (A+/A1/A; SFS Equivalent 3+).
In 2013, the Borrower refinanced its existing Senior Secured Credit Facilities (the "Term Loan"). The Term Loan is structured to a 15–year
amortization schedule, on a semi–annual basis, to a balloon of approximately $74 million at maturity. The Term Loan is sized to provide a minimum
DSCR of 1.40x under P50 wind resource and a minimum DSCR of 1.0x under P95 wind resource. The SFS EF AM share of the Term Loan was $50.0
million with the current exposure (at the end of March 2016) of $42.2 million.
The 2015 operating performance was adversely affected by the main transformer failure at San Juan Mesa wind farm ("San Juan") (120 MW or about
33% of the total capacity) resulting in the complete shutdown of the wind farm for two months. Shutdown of the San Juan wind farm resulted in about

Renewable Power Generation Can Help Countries Meet Their...
INTRODUCTION
1.1INTRODUCTION
Renewable power generation can help countries meet their sustainable development goals through provision of access to clean, secure, reliable and
affordable energy. Renewable energy has gone mainstream, accounting for the majority of capacity additions in power generation today. Tens of
gigawatts of wind, hydropower and solar photovoltaic capacity are installed worldwide every year in a renewable energy market that is worth more than
a hundred billion USD annually. Other renewable power technology markets are also emerging. Recent years have seen dramatic reductions in
renewable energy technologies' costs as a result of research and development (R&D) and accelerated deployment.

wind farm was inaugurated in November 2015, and consists of 134 turbines; and the 5 MW Hurghada wind farm. By the end of 2015 South Africa
had over 500 wind turbines producing a total of 1GW (Fried, et al., 2015).
By the end of 2015 the number of countries with more than 1,000 MW installed capacity was 26: including 17 in Europe; 4 in Asia–Pacific (China,
India, Japan & Australia); 3 in North America (Canada, Mexico, US), 1 in Latin America (Brazil) and 1 in Africa (South Africa). By the end of the
same year eight countries had more than 10,000 MW of installed capacity including China (145,362 MW), the US (74,471 MW), Germany (44,947
MW), India (25,088 MW), Spain (23,025 MW), UK (13,603 MW), Canada (11,205 MW), and France (10,358 MW) (Fried, et al., 2015).

The Wind Power Of Wind Turbines And Wind Farms
I.The nature of noise related symptoms in residents who reside within a certain proximity to wind turbines and wind farms.
Over the past several decades, there has been a resurgence in wind power. This technology is a clean renewable energy source that does not contribute
to global warming nor does it create any harmful wastes. As communities look to identify safe renewable energy sources many have turned towind
power; inspired by the numerous benefits and perceived benign risks many have attempted to harness wind power through wind turbines and wind
farms. As the Sun heats the Earth it creates wind. Due to the changing seasons and moving cloud coverage, the sun heats the Earth unevenly and this
uneven heating, in addition to the Earth 's rotation, causes warmer air to move toward cooler air resulting in wind. Although wind power is not new,
technological advancements have altered the image of the traditional windmill and have created new obstacles and environmental concerns for local
residents.
Wind power is harnessed using wind turbines, which transforms the energy into electrical power. Wind turbines are typically designed either on a
horizontal–axis or a vertical–axis. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, "horizontal–axis wind turbines have either two or three long
blades that collect the energy in the wind and convert it to electricity." Additionally, "the blades spin when the wind blows over them and the energy of

Persuasive Essay On Wind Power
Have you ever driven down highway 30 in west central Iowa at night, looked out the window and seen hundreds of red flashing lights? How about
driving through north Lincoln and seeing two enormous white turbines spinning in the wind? If you did not know previously, the red flashing lights at
night and white turbines are windmills used for generating power. These windmills can produce 2.5 to 3 megawatts of electricity daily.Wind power can
be easily used to generate electric for both personal and public use. Looking at the benefits of wind power over fossil fuels, uses of wind power for
personal and public use, and the effects of global warming on wind power, you can decide if using wind energy is a good option or not.
Using wind to generate power is a clean alternative to using coal, oil, or other non–renewable resources. Since wind is clean, it doesn't pollute the
environment and doesn't need any bad chemicals for power generation. The decision to use natural wind power over fossil fuels also reduces our
country's need to buy fossil fuels from other countries, and also the use of coal and oil from our own country. This helps to strengthen parts of our
economy by using harnessing free resources for making our power (Rinkesh).
Wind power can also benefit land owners who rent their pastures out for wind farms. This can get the land owners some extra money to put into their
savings for the future or spending fund, and also gives new jobs to the engineers who build turbines and

How The Wind Is The Most Alternative Source Of Energy
"Environmentalists have long argued that renewable energy sources . . . are preferable to fossil fuels," says H. Sterling Burnett ([1–2]).
Environmentalists have long promoted alternative energy sources, especially wind energy. Debra A. Miller says "wind is the most promising
alternative source of energy" (56). One author wrote "development of 10% of the wind potential in the 10 windiest U.S. states would provide more
than enough energy to displace emissions from the nation's coal–fired power plants and eliminate the nation's major source of acid rain" (Kaleen 71).
Understanding how the wind is turned into electricity will assist in our comprehending why environmentalists place such value in wind energy. How Is
Electricity Generated gives a detailed description of how the wind is converted into electricity. The first step entails the wind turning the blades and
generating energy. The second step consists of the spinning blades turning along with the blades. The spinning blades are attached to a hub, and a
low–speed shaft that is connected to a gear box that connects to a high–speed shaft. The third step consists of attaching the high–speed shaft connected
to an electrical generator to convert the mechanical energy into electricity ([1]). James Taylor says that once electricity has been produced, it is then
transmitted to population centers via expensive transmission lines ([2]). With all these supports in favor of using wind energy, environmentalists fail to

For example, one myth is that the turbines are very loud and distracting but, that is far form the case. Wind towers produce a "swishing" or
"whooshing" sound that only gets quitter as technology advances. As claimed by the American Wind Energy Association, "an operatingwind farm at a
distance of 750–1,000 feet is no noisier than a kitchen refrigerator or a moderately quite room" (American Wind Energy Association). All the wind
towers I've seen are at least double or triple that distance from any household so most people can't hear them at all anyways. Non–supporters say that
there are negative health effects linked to wind turbines but, that is so far from the truth. No ill health effects have ever been linked to wind turbines.
Only health benefits since the towers emit virtually no pollution (American Wind Energy Association). Non–supporters might also make the claim that
wind farms are unpredictable and unfair like many big businesses are sought out to be. However, the great thing about wind energy is you know
exactly what you're in for. Jeremy Payne of the Maine renewable Energy Association states that the "regulatory process is both predictable,
reasonable and fair" (Porter, 2015). Payne is referring to the way wind developers decide on and build location sites. Everything is very well predicted

Pros And Cons Of Kahikinui Wind Farm
Article Review: Testimony: Pros and cons of Kahikinui wind farm by Eileen Chao, The Maui News, August 2, 2015 The article discusses the strengths
and weaknesses of building a 60–megawatt wind farm in the Kahikinui district in Hawaii. The article is written as a testimony from different people
and how they feel about a company–NextEra–building a wind farm on their land. According to Pedroni, the executive director at NextEra, this project
would allow Hawaii to be on a 100% renewable energy source by 2045. The project consists of 20 wind turbines which requires access to 30 acres of
land. Such a land requirement necessitates a lease agreement between NextEra and the Hawaiian government, which would allocate upwards of
$200,000 every year. Additionally,

Why Wind Turbines Have Caused Such Controversy in Puerto Rico
Wind Turbines: Why has it caused so much controversy in Puerto Rico?
As the Law of Conservation states, energy can be neither created nor destroyed (The Secret Lives of Energy). That means that an energy source
has to be use in order to generate the energy needed. It is common knowledge that the pollution caused by the use of fossil fuels over time is
making society live in a contaminated world. In addition, the cost of the use of fossil fuels is increasing and becoming too expensive, forcing people
to find alternate ways in which they can pay less for the use of energy. The use of fossil fuels over time has increased to a point where the remaining
reservoirs have decreased by a large margin. On the other hand, renewable energy is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is considered green energy because it uses resources the Earth will replace and does not pollute nor harm the environment (Alliant Energy). Fossil
fuels, which are fuels found under the Earth's ground, such as petroleum, cannot be replaced and cause large levels of pollution (SF Environment).
One of the renewable sources causing the most controversies in Puerto Rico is the wind. In order to use the wind to generate power, also known as
Aeolic energy, wind turbines are needed.
According to research done by Discovery News, in January 25, 2013, the top 10 countries, by order of most demand and use of wind energy, are:
China, United States, Germany, Spain, India, Italy, France, Canada, Brazil, and Denmark. All of these countries are investing money inwind turbine
projects because, in the long run, it is going to benefit them from both the economic and ecofriendly point of view (Discovery News). In addition to
these top ten countries in the world, there are more countries that have, or are, investing in these types of projects, since this is the future and correct
path for the use Renewable Energy as a replacement for fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are harming the environment to the point where in a short amount of
time it is going to be almost impossible to live on Earth because of the catastrophic changes the pollution will cause. (Environmental and Energy Study

Wind Energy : Land Based- Large Turbines
Wind Energy: Land Based– Large Turbines
Winds are caused by the uneven heating of the atmosphere from the sun, irregularities of the earth's surface and the rotation of the earth. This wind
flow can be used to generate mechanical and electrical power when used by wind turbines. Wind energy is a renewable resource that does not create
pollution. Wind energy is derived from natural wind speeds of at least 10 mph. The incoming wind is harnessed by large wind turbines that are used
to move blades. The movement of these blades results in the turning of a drive shaft and generator to create clean electrical power. Awind turbine is the
opposite of a fan. Instead of using electricity to make wind, wind turbines use wind to make electricity. Wind turbines convert the potential energy in
the wind into kinetic energy that results in mechanical power– The turning of the blades and drive shaft. The mechanical energy can then be used for
traditional tasks such as grinding grain or pumping water. Modern wind turbines use generators to convert this mechanical power into electricity that
can power homes, businesses, schools and other buildings. Wind turbines are often grouped together into a single wind power plant also known as a
wind farm, and generate bulk electrical power. Electricity from these turbines is fed into a utility grid and distributed to customers, just as with
conventional power plants. Wind turbines come in a variety of sizes and power ratings. Utility–scale turbines

Katie Stevenson News Editor @KatieSStevenson Nodaway county has approved a new, 23,000 acre, wind farm for which construction will begin in
2019. This decision came after the Nodaway County Enhanced Enterprise Zone (EEZ) committee approved the tax adjustment application from
Tenaska Clear Creek Wind. The turbines will be north of Gray's Truck Stop, continuing to the Iowa border and just west of Pickering Missouri.
According to Monte Ten Kley, Director, Strategic Development & Acquisitions at Tenaska the project began in 2008 but Tenaska was not involved
until the summer of 2016 and has recently really started to take off. "Tenaska is developing a 200 to 300–megawatt wind project near Maryville in

instead of simply helping the economy. "Additionally, Tenaska is known for being a good business neighbor in communities where its plants operate,"
Ten Kley said. "Those facilities have a long–standing record of support for broad–based community programs, including food pantries and local Scout
troops, and employees donate thousands of hours of time annually to community projects, from serving on school boards to tutoring students and
coaching athletics." According to the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA) as of 2016, Missouri had 659 megawatts of wind
generating capacity online, another 300 megawatts being built, and substantial additional wind energy potential, primarily in the state's northwest.
According to Ten Kley the Missouri and the Midwest have some of the best areas for wind farms. "The Midwest has some of the best wind resources

For example, in 2003 Congress did not pass a new energy bill, this slows wind power industry advancements (Eco–logical, 2004). With wind energy
being environmentally friendly and having no ill effects on the atmosphere, one would think that every politician would be behind the wind farms.
But surprisingly they are not. For example, an article in Michigan Farm News tells us of a story about Matthew Bonnett, a dairy farmer in financial
troubles. Bonnett had to sell his cows in order to pay his bills, and is struggling to avoid losing his family farm. A wind energy company would like to
use his farmland in Cheboygan Michigan for a wind farm. Bonnett would be paid $400.00 dollars per windmill each month and he would still be able
to farm cash crops around the windmills. Shamefully, Cheboygan County and Bonnett's neighbors want to pass an ordinance banding such wind farms
(Jackson, 2003). Bay Wind Power, the same company wanting to build a wind farm on Bonnett's farm has two wind mills just off I–75, close to
Mackinaw City and they have not harmed the farmer or his land. Rich VanderVeen owner of the two windmills said, "every potential problem
anti–windmill groups have brought up have been shot down with hard, scientific evidence but the county doesn't seem to have listened" (Jackson,

Wind Power Myth Or History
Wind Power: Fact or Myth?
H. Sterling Burnett's essay, "Wind Power Puffery," looks at the supposed beneficial alternative to burning fossil fuels: wind power. Many
environmentalists view wind power as a resourceful way to reduce pollution and greenhouse gasses despite the costly methods. However, the negative
aspects of wind farms override the ideal environmental benefits wind power can provide. Wind power is not only expensive, but it is limited, unsightly,
and the turbines are killing native birds and bats. Contrary to the belief that wind power improves air pollution, the turbines work only when there is a
certain range of wind. Too little wind produces no energy and too much wind causes a potential for the towers to blow down.

There are some requirements that are needed to make wind power a successful source of energy. Wind power must still compete with conventional
generation sources on a cost basis. Depending on how energetic a wind site is, the wind farm may or may not be cost competitive. Even though the
cost of wind power has decreased dramatically in the past 10 years, the technology requires a higher initial investment than fossil–fueled generators.
Good wind sites are often located in remote locations, far from cities where the electricity is needed. Transmission lines must be built to bring the
electricity from the wind farm to the city. Wind resource development may not be the most profitable use of the land. Land suitable forwind turbine
installation must compete with alternative uses for the land, which may be more highly valued than electricity generation. Vermont perfectly matches
most of the advantages. First, it is an environmentally conscious State, and we can cut pollution from fossil fuels by using wind and other alternative
energy sources, as nations gather this week in Paris to confront the serious long–term dangers of fossil fuels and climate change. Though the
construction costs of the wind towers are substantial, in the long run thanks to lower operating costs wind will compete favorably with fossil fuels
and will save money. The consumer can find a lot of savings in costs to be achieved from usingwind power. The cost of wind power has

The Impacts Of Wind Energy
MOHAMMED ALGHAMDI ENGLISH CAMP 1 (Final draft) 11/20/2017 Wind energy Wind energy is the application of air flow by use of wind
turbines up to the mechanically powered generators to produce electric power. The wind energy is used as fuels of burnt fossils because its clean,
plenty, it's distributed widely, renewable, it doesn't consume water and doesn't produce greenhouse gases (Wolff & Meyer, 2016). The effects of wind
energy to the environment are less problematic as compared to the power sources that are non–renewable. Wind farms u are usually comprised of many
wind turbines that are individually connected to the electric energy transmission networks. Wind is known to be the cheapest electric energy source
compared to other sources like coal the gas plants. The offshore wind is usually stronger and stronger than inland. The offshore farms also have less
of an illustration effect but the maintenance and construction costs are regarded to be great (Association, 2015). Smaller onshore farms of wind can
feed some power to the grid and give electric energy to the remote off–grid areas. Wind energy provides a changeable power that is very reliable from
one year to another but that with important difference over scales of a shorter time. It's used in combination with additional sources of electric energy
to provide a consistent supply. While the amount of wind energy in each, region increases, it necessitates the upgrading of the grid

farms, based off of energy production facts, are pivotal in our society, to the continued push to reduce fossil fuel usage and greenhouse gas emissions.
To the untrained eye, they seem as though they are too good to be true; a cheaper form of energy that also emits less pollution than traditional forms of
energy production (find a source for this) sounds perfect, right? However, there has been growing tension between the wind energy industry and
environmental groups as the Obama administration continues pushing for more renewable energy projects. Several things have caused this tension....

Reported again by the Wilson journal of Ornithology, the amount of deaths to birds caused by factors other than wind turbines are as follows:
flying into power lines (an estimated death count of 175 million per year, while electrocuting an estimated tens of thousands to hundreds of
thousands more), poisoning by misapplied pesticides (which causes an estimated 72 million deaths), hitting communication towers (causes nearly
6.6 million deaths), and lastly as many as one million birds die in oil and gas industry fluid waste pits every year (Negin). With the toll of birds
dying from impacts with wind turbines, one would think there would protection policies in place to lessen the upward trending deaths, and there

"No, the truth is wind power's environmental benefits are usually overstated, while its significant environmental harms are often ignored"(247). Burnett
implies there are problems that come attached to wind power; the main one being wind towers only generate power within a certain range of wind
speed. He adds that wind towers being shut off due to wind speeds results in fossil fuel powered stations

IV. Discussion and Conclusions:
Wind Power can be defined succinctly as the kinetic energy present in motion that can be converted to mechanical energy. The basic turbine uses
mechanical blades that rotate due to the force of the wind to drive a generator that in turn sends electricity through a transformer into the power lines
that supply energy to homes and businesses. The following diagram details the above–mentioned process1
Energy/Cost Efficiency
Modern technological developments have helped transform wind energy into a more accessible and practical power source. According to the website,
the following criteria can be used to evaluate the efficiency of wind energy2:
Although wind power is completely free and will never be depleted, a concern shared by many is the sheer impossibility of sustaining the wind.
Because of this inconsistency and the ever–changing speeds of wind, power is producing at varying levels. Also, wind turbines have a certain
"envelope" in which they operate. According to the author of the website mentioned above, this range is from 10 to 33 miles per hour. A

Wind Power And The Glebe Mountain Wind Farm Case Essay
For this last case study, we focus on the topic of wind power, the details of the Catamount Energy and the Glebe Mountain Wind Farm Case, and the
importance of wind power around the world. It was very interesting learning about the history of the wind power and how it made an impact in the
world. To start it off, it is important to understand the significance ofwind power and how it plays in important role in this case study. The earliest
appearance of wind power was traced back to 2000 BC in ancient Babylon. It was used to grind grain and pump water. Over the next thousand years,
windmills began to spread to the Islamic world, China, and India. The usage of windmills traveled to the western world during the medieval times and
slowly began to adapt for use of irrigation canals. During the 19th century, the steam based railway system had made its introduction to the world, while
using windmills to pump water into train engines. In Europe, windmills were the primary energy source during the 19th century until the steam engine
came through. Then during the early and mid 1950s, that 's when government efforts to extend this windmill power grid to every American household
ended the market for these machines. In record, the first largest windmill usage to generate electricity was built in Cleveland, Ohio in 1888 by a man
named Charles F. Brush. The Brush windmill was successful and for over twenty years it is being operated. A Dane, Pou La court designed the first

Risk Analysis: Onshore Wind Turbine
There is a rising commitment towards utilizing clean energy across the world. Wind turbines happen to be an efficient choice to meet some of the
demand on electricity. A group of wind turbines connected to each other by electrical cables forms a wind farm. A wind farm produces 17 to 39 times
the power it consumes, which is more efficient when compared to other forms of energy such as nuclear power (16 times) or coal (11 times) [1]. An
onshore wind turbine sits on a structural support usually made of concrete, called Foundation, the importance of a foundation is to transfer the
horizontal and vertical forces acting on the wind turbine to the surrounding ground. Whether the case is offshore or onshore, a wind turbine would

History of Wind Energy in Denmark
Denmark was a pioneer in developing commercial wind power during the 1970's [3]. The concern over global warming grew in 1980's and Denmark
found itself among the countries with relatively high carbon emissions. The carbon emissions were relatively high because of the coal–fired electrical
power plant [4]. Renewable energy became the only viable option for Denmark, this helped decrease the dependency on other countries for energy
and at the same time helped decrease the carbon footing of Denmark and its residents. Denmark adopted a policy which stated that the country was
aiming to decrease the carbon emissions of the country by 22% by 2005[4]. March of 1985, exactly a year before the Chernobyl incident, the Danish
government passed a law which basically forbids the construction of any new nuclear power plant. This in turn increased the countries dependency on
the renewable sources of energy. This law acted

Ethical Treatment Of Factory Farmed Animals
The treatment of factory farmed animals has always been questionable. These animals are born and bred to be killed and consumed. Although, these
animals are obviously going to be eventually killed and eaten, the treatment of them while they are alive, and during their execution is unethical and
should be illegal. With the rise of documentaries exposing the unethical and, quite frankly, disgusting treatment of factory farmed animals, the issue has
never been more prevalent than it is in the present. The large companies that produce and sell meat for inexpensive prices are to blame for the
unethical treatment of the factory farmed animals that people consume. Companies like Perdue and Tyson make a huge profit off of their meats
being produced cheaply, quickly, and, quantitatively (Kenner, 2009). The Robert Kenner 2009 documentary called Food Inc. focused on the horrible
and the deplorable conditions that animals were put through, while being raised to be slaughtered. The animals in many, if not all of the farms under
Perdue and Tyson are being abused and neglected. The chickens used for various products from both companies are left in complete darkness, in
small hot spaces where there are so many of them, they are unable to even turn around (Kenner, 2009). The chickens are also force fed with food that
include growth hormones to speed up the time in which these animals are ready to be killed. The hormones that the chickens are given not only speed

Advantage And Disadvantages Of Wind Energy

  • 1. Advantage And Disadvantages Of Wind Energy 1.Introduction As the demand for energy rises, the rate at which energy is consumed exceeds the rate at which energy is generated, resulting in rolling power outages. The report will focus on wind energy, highlighting its viability and reliability as a solution to South Africa's current energy crisis. This report will give a general overview of renewable energy, focusing on the: definition, brief history and background, types of renewable energy, and current energy demands. Wind energy will then be investigated, highlighting: what it is, the generation of electricity from it, the applications of wind energy, and its reliability. The advantages and disadvantages of wind energy will then be discussed. Wind energy in the context of South Africa ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Advantages and Disadvantages of Wind Energy 4.1.Advantages 4.1.1.Wind Wind Energy is a 'clean' and sustainable resource. It is classified as a 'clean' and sustainable resource as it does not pollute the environment with poisonous and harmful emissions when being manipulated to generate electrical energy. 4.1.2.Wind Turbines Wind Turbines are space efficient machines that are also cost effective, as they have low, long –term, operational costs. Wind farms can be built on existing farms, which would then benefit the economy of rural areas as the owners of the farms could rent out a small portion of land for wind farms and still work the rest of the farmland. 4.2.Disadvantages 4.2.1.Wind Wind is unpredictable and fluctuates on an hourly basis, making it difficult to harness and provide a constant amount of electrical power. Although wind energy is the most cost–effective form of renewable energy resources, it is still more expensive than that of the manipulation of fossil fuels. 4.2.2.Wind Turbines Wind Turbines are costly to erect and operate on a short–term basis, where a single, commercial–scale Wind Turbine costs roughly $3 to $4 million dollars (approximately R34 608 000.00) (How much do wind turbines cost?, ... • 2. Renewable Energy Within Scotland And Onshore Wind Farms 5.3.2Objective B "Provide a background on renewable energy in Scotland with specific focus on wind farm developments on peatlands". The author was able to review a wide range of literature, on renewable energy in Scotland and onshore wind farms in particular. The author firstly established why there was a need for renewable energy by reviewing literature on climate change and how traditional electricity generation by power stations were recognised as having a detrimental impact to the environmental, as they were seen to contribute significantly to global warming by the levels of CO2 emission. The majority of wind farms in Scotland were found to be located in areas where peatlands were also found. Objective A and B highlighted a strong correlation between climate change, wind farm developments and peatlands. Although wind farms are recognised for their ability to displace CO2 by generating electricity from a renewable source, wind farms constructed on areas of peatlands can cause the peat to decompose, which results in the release of CO2 to the atmosphere. As highlighted within chapter two, climate change and renewable energy targets for the UK and Scotland have been set within the European Union's Renewable Energy Directive 2009/28/EC. What will be interesting to see in the next couple of years is, whether the UK and Scotland's Government will revise these targets given that they are in the process of leaving the EU. 5.3.3Objective C "Establish the common environmental ... The Google Self-Driving Automobile The Google Self–Driving Automobile In 2010, Google broadcasted that they created an archetype of a car that can drive itself; its purpose, to avert collisions, allow citizens more time, and cut down on harmful pollutants that vehicles produce (Poczter & Jankovic, 2014). The heart of the self–driving automobile is lasers that are mounted on the roof of a modified Toyota Prius that produces a precise three–dimensional atlas of the area surrounding the car. Furthermore, the automobile is outfitted with four radars, and another laser around the vehicle that allows it to precisely create a 3–D map of its surroundings (Poczter & Jankovic, 2014). Polaris Project, Liberty Asia, and La Strada International are anti–trafficking organizations who provide imperative assistance to victims that need help in the United States, Europe, and the Mekong Delta Region (Fighting Human Trafficking, 2013). Not only will this collaboration benefit the victims, it will also advance the system by significantly increasing the amount of beneficial data being shared. The anti–trafficking hotline project collects information from area hotlines, creating unison procedures, which in turn will generate an anti–trafficking approach that will develop similar models that concentrate on abolition, deterrence, and safeguarding victims (Fighting Human Trafficking, 2013). The data collected will allow the organizations to analyze which methods are most effective at ending slavery, and what areas are experiencing an escalation, or if the decline in one region corresponds with an increase in another nearby country (Fighting Human Trafficking, 2013). The purpose behind Google's Global Impact Awards is to aid with pioneering individuals or groups to discover resolutions to large and difficult problems (Alcindor, 2013). • 6. Reactive Power Support And Control For Wind Farms Reactive Power Support and control for Wind Farms Ashish Mishra (R11324429) Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Texas Tech University Final term Paper for ECE 5343 – Power Systems Engineering Abstract: This report contains details on the reactive power compensation techniques for fixed–speed wind turbines as well as the inherent reactive power support provided by the variable–speed wind turbines. This paper also reviews the latest grid codes and requirements for reactive power support by wind farms. In the end this paper provides quantitative calculations for determining the reactive power compensation needed for unity power factor operation by a fixed–speed squirrel cage induction generator based wind turbines. Keywords: Reactive power support, fixed speed, variable speed, Wind Turbine, Grid code 1. Introduction Since the last decade, there has been an increased growth in the electricity production through wind power [8]. Such increasing penetration levels of wind power in to the total generation mix has raised several concerns to the transmission system operators. Some of the issues related to large scale grid integration of wind power causing concern to the transmission system operators are low voltage fault through capability, voltage support during large disturbances and unity power factor operation [7]. This has made the regulators and transmission system operators to introduce new grid standards and requirements for wind farms to make sure the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Windmills: Hero Of Alexandria Windmills date as far back as 200 BC. The first windmill was known as "Hero of Alexandria", located in what is now known as Iran, but was not too successful. These windmills were tweaked over many years to have a well functioning purpose. The main purposes of the windmills in ancient times were water pumping and grain grinding. Windmills have been used for thousands of years, allowing for a revolutionary way of completing certain tasks. Today, we have what is known as wind turbines. These large structures are used as a renewable and freeenergy source. The way a wind turbine works is very simple. As the wind blows, it moves the blades, which then turns a generator and makes electricity. These wind turbines are only a small source of energy because they work about 65 to 90 percent of the time. When many wind turbines are placed together in one area, it is known as a wind farm. The majority of wind farms are found in Texas and California. Wind farms are hoped to be spread all across the country to become a more prominent source of energy that is not only renewable, but also free. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One downfall to this form of renewable energy is the threat to birds and bats. The large blades that turn could potentially hit any flying species, causing death. Another small but still negative impact is the placement of wind farms. Wind turbines take up a sizeable amount of land, and when there is more than one in a single area, clearing may need to occur. Also, roads need to be made for workers to access the wind farms. Despite these small environmental impacts, the overall purpose of the wind turbine does enough good for the energy source to almost cancel out these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Virginia Beach 's Offshore Wind Farm Solution Essay Virginia Beach, Virginia is making strides toward cleaner energy production, despite the threat of a coal–fired power plant. Coal–fired power plants, such as the Cypress Creek Power Station intended to be built in Surry County, Virginia, are environmentally harmful yet most cities are continuing to depend on them for a reliable and steady output of energy. This local environmental issue is a dilemma that many cities throughout the world are also experiencing. My study demonstrates how cities faced with these predicaments can find practical solutions for providing energy while being environmentally friendly. Scientific research along with the analysis of two scholarly articles explain the threats of coal–fired power plants on humans' health and the environment as well as the advantages and disadvantages of practical solutions. Based upon proven facts and research, I have provided my opinion that Virginia Beach's offshore wind farm solution is a suitable choice for that specific geographic region. What is not a suitable solution is the natural gas–fueled power plant that is currently in the process of being constructed. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that there is no one–size–fits–all solution to providing energy. Air Pollution in Virginia Beach; an Environmental Issue An environmental issue affecting the city of Virginia Beach, VA is the production of a coal –fired power plant. • 9. Wind Farms Beneficial To The Economy Wind farms are growing in number in the modern economy, they are also becoming controversial as to whether or not the farms provide a beneficial source of jobs. There are some people who argue that the wind farms are beneficial to the economy by providing jobs, but there are also some people who feel that the wind farms are not beneficial to the economy. In Nancy Fol bre's words, "A recent Pew Foundation report estimates that the number of them grew nearly two and a half times faster than overall jobs between 1998 and 2007" (Folbre). Folbre is saying that the jobs are beneficial to the economy because the wind farms are providing more jobs than any other job. However, in BjГёrn Lomborg's words, "If a sustainability adviser quits a concrete... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Folbre's article the author brings up a very good point, if we were to look at the new wind farms as a good thing we can realize that the wind farms are helping people get jobs and also help save the environment by creating more "green" energy. Although, in the words of Gulen, written by Lomborg: "respected individuals do not always see the new jobs as a good thing: "Gulen concluded that job creation 'cannot be defended as another benefit' of well–meaning green policies." (Lomborg). In Lomborg's article the author referred to the college professor Gulen as someone who did not agree with the new jobs. Gulen's statement was not truly correct because the new jobs created would be a benefit because it allows people who don't have jobs to get jobs from the people who decide to leave their current job to go work at the wind farms. Either way, the wind farms are a win–win for people and jobs; however, there will be a moment in time when the economy falls because of the people leaving their current jobs, but there will be a rise in the economy because as one job gets lost two more jobs can get filled, a job at the wind farms and a job at the place where the position was vacated. The jobs that are being added are a good addition to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Where to Build a Wind Farm? – Geography Assessment In my opinion, the best place to build a wind farm in Cumbria is off the shore of Allonby. This is because; it has a lot of advantages which suit it, for being the best place to build a wind farm; as of its location and ingenious ideology behind it. Moreover, it is an offshore wind farm, which means that it will benefit a lot of homes, as at the sea it is extremely windy. Thus, a lot of electricity is generated, providing a lot of electricity than usual. Besides, Anthorn was on the coast and had some roads, so cars can get through for maintenance, however it had some radio masts and it would interfere with radio signals and be an additional 'eyesore.' Moreover, Skiddaw could've had the winning chance, but some factors limited it. It had high ground and plenty of spaces, as there were essentially no buildings and it would not affect anyone in terms of noise, as it was on a high mountain. • 11. Human Health Problems Caused By Air Pollution Next, there are human health problems caused by air pollution from the burning of coal and oil. Air pollution can cause long–term damage including many diseases and a range of short–term respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, throat irritation, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and asthmatics are most vulnerable to this air pollution. Miners, especially, are prone to black lung disease. Another cost of fossil fuels includes damage to land from coal mining. It causes deforestation which can easily endanger many species and causes an increase of carbon dioxide due to the lack of plants that photosynthesize. Coal mining also releases toxic amounts of minerals and heavy metals into the soil and water. It can ignite coal fires which burn for decades and release greenhouse gases into the air, slowly destroying the ozone. Mining releases methane, a greenhouse gas twenty times more powerful than carbon dioxide. The burning of nonrenewable energy can also cause elevated levels of hydrogen ions, increasing the acidity of rain; this can have harmful effects on plants, animals, and infrastructure. Over the last one hundred and fifty years, the use of fossil fuels have resulted in more than a twenty five percent increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The global temperature has increased by one degree Fahrenheit over the same amount of time. It may not seem like much, but this is detrimental to the entirety of the planet, ... • 12. Potential Energy and Wind Power Walking outside, wind blows towards your face, can you imagine the wind can transfer to electricity? Majority people in China have the idea of the coal–burning as a way to produce electricity. However, coal is a limited resource nowadays. Scientists had found out several alternative ways to produce energy, for example–wind power. Wind power can bring us many benefits because wind is an infinite resource; wind power is environmentally friendly while wind farm is also a low–tax project. Wind power, a new way to create energy, has become more and more popular. Scientists, nowadays, are concerned about the limitation of fossil fuels worldwide. It means some country whose electricity is most produced by fossil fuels may have the energy crisis in the future. However, other countries, use wind as an energy resource, not have to worry about the situation because wind power is infinite. What actually happens is sun's heat causes the air to warm up in patches. In a result, some patches of air become warm while other patches remain cold. Hot air gets lighter in weight hence leaves it place and move towards upside, colder air patches are bit heavier there for their rushes to fill up the space that is left unoccupied by heated air, and this process generates wind. Because the sun will not be destroyed in a short time, we will have to wind for such a long time. Thus, wind power has infinite source supply (Solarpowernotes). The infinity of wind makes wind power a endless energy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Wind Power Of Wind Turbines And Wind Farms I.The nature of noise related symptoms in residents who reside within a certain proximity to wind turbines and wind farms. Over the past several decades, there has been a resurgence in wind power. This technology is a clean renewable energy source that does not contribute to global warming nor does it create any harmful wastes. As communities look to identify safe renewable energy sources many have turned towind power; inspired by the numerous benefits and perceived benign risks many have attempted to harness wind power through wind turbines and wind farms. As the Sun heats the Earth it creates wind. Due to the changing seasons and moving cloud coverage, the sun heats the Earth unevenly and this uneven heating, in addition to the Earth 's rotation, causes warmer air to move toward cooler air resulting in wind. Although wind power is not new, technological advancements have altered the image of the traditional windmill and have created new obstacles and environmental concerns for local residents. Wind power is harnessed using wind turbines, which transforms the energy into electrical power. Wind turbines are typically designed either on a horizontal–axis or a vertical–axis. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, "horizontal–axis wind turbines have either two or three long blades that collect the energy in the wind and convert it to electricity." Additionally, "the blades spin when the wind blows over them and the energy of motion contained in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Persuasive Essay On Wind Power Have you ever driven down highway 30 in west central Iowa at night, looked out the window and seen hundreds of red flashing lights? How about driving through north Lincoln and seeing two enormous white turbines spinning in the wind? If you did not know previously, the red flashing lights at night and white turbines are windmills used for generating power. These windmills can produce 2.5 to 3 megawatts of electricity daily.Wind power can be easily used to generate electric for both personal and public use. Looking at the benefits of wind power over fossil fuels, uses of wind power for personal and public use, and the effects of global warming on wind power, you can decide if using wind energy is a good option or not. Using wind to generate power is a clean alternative to using coal, oil, or other non–renewable resources. Since wind is clean, it doesn't pollute the environment and doesn't need any bad chemicals for power generation. The decision to use natural wind power over fossil fuels also reduces our country's need to buy fossil fuels from other countries, and also the use of coal and oil from our own country. This helps to strengthen parts of our economy by using harnessing free resources for making our power (Rinkesh). Wind power can also benefit land owners who rent their pastures out for wind farms. This can get the land owners some extra money to put into their savings for the future or spending fund, and also gives new jobs to the engineers who build turbines and ... • 18. • 21. How The Wind Is The Most Alternative Source Of Energy "Environmentalists have long argued that renewable energy sources . . . are preferable to fossil fuels," says H. Sterling Burnett ([1–2]). Environmentalists have long promoted alternative energy sources, especially wind energy. Debra A. Miller says "wind is the most promising alternative source of energy" (56). One author wrote "development of 10% of the wind potential in the 10 windiest U.S. states would provide more than enough energy to displace emissions from the nation's coal–fired power plants and eliminate the nation's major source of acid rain" (Kaleen 71). Understanding how the wind is turned into electricity will assist in our comprehending why environmentalists place such value in wind energy. How Is Electricity Generated gives a detailed description of how the wind is converted into electricity. The first step entails the wind turning the blades and generating energy. The second step consists of the spinning blades turning along with the blades. The spinning blades are attached to a hub, and a low–speed shaft that is connected to a gear box that connects to a high–speed shaft. The third step consists of attaching the high–speed shaft connected to an electrical generator to convert the mechanical energy into electricity ([1]). James Taylor says that once electricity has been produced, it is then transmitted to population centers via expensive transmission lines ([2]). With all these supports in favor of using wind energy, environmentalists fail to recognize the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Wind Energy : Land Based- Large Turbines Wind Energy: Land Based– Large Turbines Winds are caused by the uneven heating of the atmosphere from the sun, irregularities of the earth's surface and the rotation of the earth. This wind flow can be used to generate mechanical and electrical power when used by wind turbines. Wind energy is a renewable resource that does not create pollution. Wind energy is derived from natural wind speeds of at least 10 mph. The incoming wind is harnessed by large wind turbines that are used to move blades. The movement of these blades results in the turning of a drive shaft and generator to create clean electrical power. Awind turbine is the opposite of a fan. Instead of using electricity to make wind, wind turbines use wind to make electricity. Wind turbines convert the potential energy in the wind into kinetic energy that results in mechanical power– The turning of the blades and drive shaft. The mechanical energy can then be used for traditional tasks such as grinding grain or pumping water. Modern wind turbines use generators to convert this mechanical power into electricity that can power homes, businesses, schools and other buildings. Wind turbines are often grouped together into a single wind power plant also known as a wind farm, and generate bulk electrical power. Electricity from these turbines is fed into a utility grid and distributed to customers, just as with conventional power plants. Wind turbines come in a variety of sizes and power ratings. • 32. Wind Energy Essay There are some requirements that are needed to make wind power a successful source of energy. Wind power must still compete with conventional generation sources on a cost basis. Depending on how energetic a wind site is, the wind farm may or may not be cost competitive. Even though the cost of wind power has decreased dramatically in the past 10 years, the technology requires a higher initial investment than fossil–fueled generators. Good wind sites are often located in remote locations, far from cities where the electricity is needed. Transmission lines must be built to bring the electricity from the wind farm to the city. Wind resource development may not be the most profitable use of the land. Land suitable forwind turbine installation must compete with alternative uses for the land, which may be more highly valued than electricity generation. Vermont perfectly matches most of the advantages. First, it is an environmentally conscious State, and we can cut pollution from fossil fuels by using wind and other alternative energy sources, as nations gather this week in Paris to confront the serious long–term dangers of fossil fuels and climate change. Though the construction costs of the wind towers are substantial, in the long run thanks to lower operating costs wind will compete favorably with fossil fuels and will save money. The consumer can find a lot of savings in costs to be achieved from usingwind power. The cost of wind power has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The Impacts Of Wind Energy MOHAMMED ALGHAMDI ENGLISH CAMP 1 (Final draft) 11/20/2017 Wind energy Wind energy is the application of air flow by use of wind turbines up to the mechanically powered generators to produce electric power. The wind energy is used as fuels of burnt fossils because its clean, plenty, it's distributed widely, renewable, it doesn't consume water and doesn't produce greenhouse gases (Wolff & Meyer, 2016). The effects of wind energy to the environment are less problematic as compared to the power sources that are non–renewable. Wind farms u are usually comprised of many wind turbines that are individually connected to the electric energy transmission networks. Wind is known to be the cheapest electric energy source compared to other sources like coal the gas plants. The offshore wind is usually stronger and stronger than inland. The offshore farms also have less of an illustration effect but the maintenance and construction costs are regarded to be great (Association, 2015). Smaller onshore farms of wind can feed some power to the grid and give electric energy to the remote off–grid areas. Wind energy provides a changeable power that is very reliable from one year to another but that with important difference over scales of a shorter time. It's used in combination with additional sources of electric energy to provide a consistent supply. While the amount of wind energy in each, region increases, it necessitates the upgrading of the grid ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Current Issues Involving Wind Farms and Wildlife Introduction and Background: Wind energy has been one of the greatest developments in the field of renewable energy in the last several years. Wind farms, based off of energy production facts, are pivotal in our society, to the continued push to reduce fossil fuel usage and greenhouse gas emissions. To the untrained eye, they seem as though they are too good to be true; a cheaper form of energy that also emits less pollution than traditional forms of energy production (find a source for this) sounds perfect, right? However, there has been growing tension between the wind energy industry and environmental groups as the Obama administration continues pushing for more renewable energy projects. Several things have caused this tension.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Reported again by the Wilson journal of Ornithology, the amount of deaths to birds caused by factors other than wind turbines are as follows: flying into power lines (an estimated death count of 175 million per year, while electrocuting an estimated tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands more), poisoning by misapplied pesticides (which causes an estimated 72 million deaths), hitting communication towers (causes nearly 6.6 million deaths), and lastly as many as one million birds die in oil and gas industry fluid waste pits every year (Negin). With the toll of birds dying from impacts with wind turbines, one would think there would protection policies in place to lessen the upward trending deaths, and there are several. First, the Endangered Species Act protects birds such as the whooping crane. The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is said to perhaps be, "the most important piece of environmental legislation ever passed in the United States" by the American Bird Conservancy. The whooping crane is one of the biggest successes of the ESA because of the fact that their population was once down as low as 16 birds in 1941. With the increased effort to maintain the lives of the tallest American bird, the whooping crane has now reached a population of approximately 345, with 130 in captivity, 80 of which do not migrate and live year–round in Florida, 50 that ... • 35. Wind Power Puffery Summary of "Wind Power Puffery" by H. Sterling Burnett Many believe that wind power is the best solution to this world's problem–it helps fuel infrastructures without causing air pollution and reduces greenhouse gas emission (Burnett 247). However, H. Sterling Burnett, author of the article "Wind Power Puffery", suggests differently when he states, "No, the truth is wind power's environmental benefits are usually overstated, while its significant environmental harms are often ignored"(247). Burnett implies there are problems that come attached to wind power; the main one being wind towers only generate power within a certain range of wind speed. He adds that wind towers being shut off due to wind speeds results in fossil fuel powered stations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Abstract: Wind energy has many pros and cons, and thus is subject to much scrutiny as a viable energy source. A fundamental qualification forwind power is the ability to support the vast industries and the enterprises of the 6.3 billion people that inhabit this planet. In addition, wind power must be able to meet the needs of the Earth's population in a renewable, reliable, and responsible manner. In the following paper, wind energy will be evaluated based on its energy/cost efficiency, possible environmental ramifications, its practicality and the various countries already implementing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... IV. Discussion and Conclusions: Wind Power can be defined succinctly as the kinetic energy present in motion that can be converted to mechanical energy. The basic turbine uses mechanical blades that rotate due to the force of the wind to drive a generator that in turn sends electricity through a transformer into the power lines that supply energy to homes and businesses. The following diagram details the above–mentioned process1 Energy/Cost Efficiency Modern technological developments have helped transform wind energy into a more accessible and practical power source. According to the website, the following criteria can be used to evaluate the efficiency of wind energy2: Although wind power is completely free and will never be depleted, a concern shared by many is the sheer impossibility of sustaining the wind. Because of this inconsistency and the ever–changing speeds of wind, power is producing at varying levels. Also, wind turbines have a certain "envelope" in which they operate. According to the author of the website mentioned above, this range is from 10 to 33 miles per hour. Wind Farm Essay Wind Farm Mathematical Modelling and FRT Improvement Using PMSG and Soft–computing Abstract: In this paper multi machine concept is taken for fault ride through (FRT) improvement. Here FRT capability improvement of two wind generator are considered and two wind farms are connected with multi machine. This paper incorporates a detailed mathematical model for wind turbine and it shows how input wind is converted to power and how bet'z limit varies with wind. As a soft computing technique, fuzzy logic controller is used at grid side for voltage control. Crow bar protection concept is applied and implemented between machine and greed side converters. Ground fault is created in simulation and control technique helps to improve this FRT capability due to fault which we can say due to network disturbance. Key Words: Fault ride through, PMSG, fuzzy, mathematical modelling, multi machine Introduction As the world is growing, demand for energy is also considerably increasing. Now a days due to more concern on pollution free power generation sources renewable energy sources are in high demand. Wind farm is also one of the renewable energy source and its use and implementation is considerably increasing. As the wind is not constant at all the time, so generated power may vary. We can get stable power by using particular control strategies but still we need to minimize transients available in power. As well characteristics should match between generator source and load. • 38. Wind Power And The Glebe Mountain Wind Farm Case Essay For this last case study, we focus on the topic of wind power, the details of the Catamount Energy and the Glebe Mountain Wind Farm Case, and the importance of wind power around the world. It was very interesting learning about the history of the wind power and how it made an impact in the world. To start it off, it is important to understand the significance ofwind power and how it plays in important role in this case study. The earliest appearance of wind power was traced back to 2000 BC in ancient Babylon. It was used to grind grain and pump water. Over the next thousand years, windmills began to spread to the Islamic world, China, and India. The usage of windmills traveled to the western world during the medieval times and slowly began to adapt for use of irrigation canals. During the 19th century, the steam based railway system had made its introduction to the world, while using windmills to pump water into train engines. In Europe, windmills were the primary energy source during the 19th century until the steam engine came through. Then during the early and mid 1950s, that 's when government efforts to extend this windmill power grid to every American household ended the market for these machines. In record, the first largest windmill usage to generate electricity was built in Cleveland, Ohio in 1888 by a man named Charles F. Brush. The Brush windmill was successful and for over twenty years it is being operated. A Dane, Pou La court designed the first wind machine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Risk Analysis: Onshore Wind Turbine There is a rising commitment towards utilizing clean energy across the world. Wind turbines happen to be an efficient choice to meet some of the demand on electricity. A group of wind turbines connected to each other by electrical cables forms a wind farm. A wind farm produces 17 to 39 times the power it consumes, which is more efficient when compared to other forms of energy such as nuclear power (16 times) or coal (11 times) [1]. An onshore wind turbine sits on a structural support usually made of concrete, called Foundation, the importance of a foundation is to transfer the horizontal and vertical forces acting on the wind turbine to the surrounding ground. Whether the case is offshore or onshore, a wind turbine would essentially consist of the same parts. The first component ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hence Denmark has surpassed the energy requirement has made sure that Wind energy fulfills of their electricity needs. Some of the world's biggest wind turbine manufactures are from Denmark and that has contributed the vast development made by the country. Today a substantial share of the wind turbines around the world is produced by Danish manufacturers such as Vestas and SiemensWind Power along with many component suppliers [2]. History of Wind Energy in Denmark Denmark was a pioneer in developing commercial wind power during the 1970's [3]. The concern over global warming grew in 1980's and Denmark found itself among the countries with relatively high carbon emissions. The carbon emissions were relatively high because of the coal–fired electrical power plant [4]. Renewable energy became the only viable option for Denmark, this helped decrease the dependency on other countries for energy and at the same time helped decrease the carbon footing of Denmark and its residents. Denmark adopted a policy which stated that the country was aiming to decrease the carbon emissions of the country by 22% by 2005[4]. March of 1985, exactly a year before the Chernobyl incident, the Danish government passed a law which basically forbids the construction of any new nuclear power plant. This in turn increased the countries dependency on the renewable sources of energy. This law acted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Ethical Treatment Of Factory Farmed Animals The treatment of factory farmed animals has always been questionable. These animals are born and bred to be killed and consumed. Although, these animals are obviously going to be eventually killed and eaten, the treatment of them while they are alive, and during their execution is unethical and should be illegal. With the rise of documentaries exposing the unethical and, quite frankly, disgusting treatment of factory farmed animals, the issue has never been more prevalent than it is in the present. The large companies that produce and sell meat for inexpensive prices are to blame for the unethical treatment of the factory farmed animals that people consume. Companies like Perdue and Tyson make a huge profit off of their meats being produced cheaply, quickly, and, quantitatively (Kenner, 2009). The Robert Kenner 2009 documentary called Food Inc. focused on the horrible and the deplorable conditions that animals were put through, while being raised to be slaughtered. The animals in many, if not all of the farms under Perdue and Tyson are being abused and neglected. The chickens used for various products from both companies are left in complete darkness, in small hot spaces where there are so many of them, they are unable to even turn around (Kenner, 2009). The chickens are also force fed with food that include growth hormones to speed up the time in which these animals are ready to be killed. The hormones that the chickens are given not only speed up their maturity from 90 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
