What Does It Mean To Say In Matthew 6
In Matthew 6 of the Bible, Jesus explains how he wants his followers to pray and fast, and he gives
an example of what kinds of prayers should be said to God. Many times, Jesus advises against
"verbose prayer, flamboyant fasting, and devotions designed merely to get attention" (Matthew 6: l–
8). In the modern Christian religion, many churches' practices seem to negate what Jesus advised to
do in this text. Members of churches often display their faith to others, praying loudly, publicly, and
oftentimes, repetitively. It is thus difficult to decide what the "correct" ways are to pray and act in
modern Christianity if the practices of churches either reject or ignore this notable passage in the
Bible. Matthew 6 begins with Jesus saying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The text advises one to not pray or show acts of kindness publicly mainly so that others can see, but
it seems as though the purpose of some churches is just the opposite. Churches have become a space
for groups of people to come together, listen to a clergy member profess their faith and the word of
God, pray loudly and proudly sometimes repetitive prayers, and encourage others to do the same.
Christian charities are open about showing their donations as a way to encourage others to do the
same to display faith in God. This is not suggesting that their practices are entirely hypocritical or
heretical, as their practices seem to coincide with the lessons of other Christian texts. This just
means that there are inconsistencies between the teachings and practices of some modern Christian
churches and the text of Matthew

Greco-Christian Beliefs Of Christianity And The Gospel Of...
The Greek Alexander Romance describes the life of Alexander the Great, focusing primarily on his
great military feats as a leader of Greece and highlighting why he is remembered as a great Greco–
Roman leader. Similarly, the Gospel of Matthew explains the life of Jesus Christ through his
teachings and miracles, which underline why he is known as the greatest figure from Judeo–
Christian culture. Alexander and Jesus easily compare because they died in their early thirties, were
known as kings, and are remembered for impressive triumphs while on earth. Alexander sought to
build his empire and essentially rule the world through victories on the battlefield and the
conquering of neighboring countries. Jesus sought to destroy evil on earth by establishing God's
Kingdom and teachings in the hearts of all. Comparing the lives of these great Greco–Roman and
Judeo–Christian leaders highlight the differences in cultural opinion on the highest good in life, how
one obtains that good, and what that means in connection to an afterlife. Judeo–Christian and
Greco–Roman perspectives on elements of a meaningful life contrast in the sense that Judeo–
Christian actions to pursue these elements are motivated by the desire for everlasting life in heaven,
while Greco–Roman actions are motivated by the desire for perpetual fame on earth after one dies.
Both Alexander the Great and Jesus Christ establish relationships with their communities in order to
obtain their respective highest good in life. In an effort to bring salvation for all, Jesus tried to lead
everyone on earth on the path towards the kingdom of heaven. In the beginning of the Gospel of
Matthew, God says that Jesus will, "save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). The idea of
salvation is repeated later when Jesus himself announces, "He who endures to the end will be saved"
suggesting that whoever follows his guidance on redemption will be able to go to heaven (Matthew
10:22). On the other hand in The Greek Alexander Romance, Alexander seeks to obtain the highest
good of power by uniting surrounding empires under his rule and becoming the "ruler of the world"
(66). In an effort to build unity and trust in him, he fought alongside his men on the front line in
battle.

How Jesus' Life Affected Our Lives
When we look back on Jesus' life, we can see how his life affected ours. Jesus was the Messiah. He
was sent by God to do great things. Not only did he save people, but also he sacrificed himself to for
everyone's sins. I have learned many things about Jesus in Christian Worldview and even more
when reading about his life and biblical principles. We can learn how Jesus was important through
Messianic Prophecies, Jesus' Teachings, and His Miracles. We can learn how Jesus was important
through Messianic Prophecies. A prophecy that stands out comes from Isaiah 9. It says that, "The
people who walk in darkness will see a great light." It also says that, "For a child is born to us, a son
is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful
Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Isaiah prophesied that Jesus, the child
born would become their deliverer, the Messiah. In a time of great darkness, God promised to send a
light to shine on everyone living a life full of sin. It turns out that this message came to be true, with
the birth of Christ, he came to deliver. Another prophecy that is important is the one in Isaiah 53 that
talks about Jesus' sacrifice for us. In verses 1–3, it talks about how Jesus was treated like an ordinary
man. He had no outward beauty or majesty, and he was "despised and rejected." Then, in verse 7, it
says that he was "led like a lamb to the slaughter." In the Old Testament, people often gave

Colossian Passage
Significance After reviewing the context and the meaning of the passage in Colossians, the
significance and contemporary application can be discovered. The significance of a passage can help
determine the relationship between the meaning and the reader. In essence, the last step in bridging
the gap that separates modern man from the ancient text is to determine the significance of a
passage. The meaning of scripture is stable and does not change, but significance, in how it relates
to life, is usually never the same. There are many prayers in the word of God that should and can
impact the lives of people today. A person must learn and absorb the words of those prayers. Within
the context of Paul's prayer for the Colossians, he gave exceptional instruction. In looking back
through Colossians 1:9–14, most, if not all, of Paul's intended prayer and instruction is directly
relative to modern man. Paul's anticipated impact on the church at Colossae is just as impactful to
the church of today.
Beginning with verse 9, the example that Paul set by praying for fellow brothers and sisters should
be noted and incorporated into a person's daily prayer life. In the last part of verse 9, he prayed for
the knowledge of the Lord's will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. It would be beneficial to
keep the state of mind that there is always more knowledge to be obtain through prayer and study of
the Bible. There is a much greater possibility of being influenced by false

Bible And The Lord's Prayer
I got very annoyed and was very disturbed when Moore discussed the ordination of women in the
Catholic Church; as well as the discussion about changing the words of the Bible and the Lord's
Prayer. First, Moore discusses feminist liberal movements changing the wording of the Bible:
"Proffered gender–neutral language, substituting 'brothers and sisters' for 'brothers,' interpreting the
pronoun 'He' as the proper noun 'God,' and using 'Our Parent' instead of 'Our Father' in the Lord's
Prayer (Moore 143). The Lord's Prayer was given to us by Christ in the Gospel of Matthew and the
Gospel of Luke. To turn around and decide you don't like the wording so you're going to change it is
very disturbing to me. The prevalence of the idea of gender–neutral

Symbols and Symbolism in A Clean Well-Lighted Place, By...
Symbolism in A Clean Well–Lighted Place
Symbolism, may be defined as a non–superficial representation of an idea or belief that goes beyond
what is "seen." Earnest Hemingway's "A Clean Well–Lighted Place" uses symbolism to help convey
the theme of Nihilism, the philosophy that there is nothing heavenly to believe in. It discusses that
there is no supernatural reason or explanation of how the world is today. Three symbols: the soldier,
the café, and the shadows of the leaves, found in Hemingway's short story clearly displays this
Nihilistic theme.
The first clear display of Nihilism by the use of symbols is the brief passage description of the
soldier passing the café with the prostitute. This imagery ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The light is supposed to let the reader see that the guard is corrupt when he should be a loyal and an
example to the community.
Hemingway's second portrayal of symbolism that a reader may distinguish is the café itself. The
café represents a sanctuary of the evilness of the world. The namesake of the short story is a clue for
the reader to see that the café would represent some form of an asylum not only from the elements
of nature, but also safety from evil. An example of the usefulness of this sanctuary is how the deaf
old man uses the café as a safe–haven to be to himself after the incident where he almost succeeded
in committing suicide and enjoys the comfort the café gives. The old waiter represents in the café
the kindness and caring that the café should provide; whereas the younger waiter is more of a
materialistic character. He clearly displays shallowness and selfishness. Arthur Waldhorn writes that
the older waiter helps keep the light on a little longer at the café for those, who like himself, 'do not
want to go to bed.' (P 28) The younger waiter is a protagonist in attitude of the older waiter. The
philosophy of Nihilism is brought into this theme when the older man recites the Lord's Prayer but
substitutes the word "nada" for every noun in it. Nihilism is brought onto a larger scale because it is
very evident that there is nothing to believe in, even as a

Yearning for Peace in Hemingway's A Clean, Well–Lighted Place
While Hemingway's short story "A Clean, Well–Lighted Place" is usually interpreted as an intensely
poetic description of despair, it can with equal validity be seen instead as mankind's never ending
yearning to find spiritual peace. Hemingway's short story displayed this emotional journey in many
different ways. First, the title itself is a symbol for man's desire to find a state of tranquillity, safety,
and comfort. Hemingway also showed this in the story's setting, which was used as a symbol for a
sense of order, for it was late, the cafe was empty, and the men there were at ease. Finally,
Hemingway showed this desire in the contrasting actions between the ... Show more content on

Here he was showing that in one's lowest level of despair, man's one and only desire is to find a safe
haven, and to acquire a sense of security.
Finding a sense of security and meaning to life was very important to Hemingway who was known
to feel that the individual quest for meaningful values was a universal one, probably because
Hemingway himself struggled to find the true meaning of his life, or the true sense of his purpose.
The despair that Hemingway himself felt is best shown in "A Clean, Well–Lighted Place" when the
older waiter was intertwined in a conversation with himself. He said that: "It was all a nothing and a
man was nothing too. It was only that and light was all it needed and a certain cleanness and order.
Some lived in it and never felt it but he knew it was nada y pues nada y nada y pues nada" (383).
Nothing and then nothing. When one is in a state of despair, the only thing that one is looking for is
a way out of one's situation, or a road that will lead to a peaceful end to one's feelings of
hopelessness.
Hemingway, however, presented a remarkable example of man's search for an end to his state of
hopelessness. When one waiter commented on the deaf man's attempt at taking his own life, he said
"Last week he tried to commit suicide." The other waiter replied "Why?" Then he said, "He was in
despair" (379). This summed up man's desire, at his lowest level of depression, to find peace,

The Sermon on the Mount Essay
The sermon at the mount is a collection of teachings and sayings that Jesus preaches to people at
Galilee. It takes place after Jesus had been baptized by John the Baptist. This is the longest teaching
by Jesus in a single preaching. It is found in the New Testament in the book of Matthew. It
transverses chapter five to seven of the Gospel of Matthew. The main theme of sermon of the
mountain is how people should relate with other people and God. The sermon is preached at a
mountain when Jesus saw the crowd and his disciples' were following him, he sat at a level ground
on the mountain and started to preach. The Preaching's can be divided it four major parts; The
Beatitudes, Lord's Prayer and parables.

Here Jesus tells people who are meek that they will inherit the Promised Land. People who are meek
are those who submit to God's authority.
The fourth beatitude is found in the book of Matthew chapter five verse six and it states; blessed are
those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Here Jesus teaches the
multitude that people who have a great passion and drive for righteousness will have their souls
cravings satisfied.
The fifth beatitude is found in the book of Matthew chapter five verses seven. This is a beatitude
between man and his fellow humans. It states; blessed are the merciful for they shall be shown
mercy. This is a beatitude said in a present tense context. It says those who are showing mercy to
fellow human will expect to be shown mercy during judgment day.
The sixth beatitude is found in the book of Matthew chapter five verses eight, it's a beatitude
between man and God and its futuristic in nature. It states blessed are the pure in heart for there will
see God. A pure heart is a heart that has only one objective and that is pleasing God. Here Jesus tells
the multitudes that those who please God will go to heaven.
The seventh beatitude is found in the book of Matthew chapter five verses nine, it's a beatitude of
how man should relate with other humans. It has a present context. It states that blessed are the

Prayer
Does prayer heal?
Prayer is an invocation or act that seeks to activate a rapport with a deity, an object of worship, or a
spiritual entity through deliberate communication. Prayer can be a form of religious practice, may be
either individual or communal and take place in public or in private. It may involve the use of words
or song. When language is used, prayer may take the form of a hymn, incantation, formal creed, or a
spontaneous utterance in the praying person. There are different forms of prayer such as petitioner
prayer, prayers of supplication, thanksgiving, and worship/praise. Prayer may be directed towards a
deity, spirit, deceased person, or lofty idea, for the purpose of worshipping, requesting guidance,
requesting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wheeler (2006) also refutes the idea that prayer contributes to healing as he indicates that what is
depicted in churches as miracles are theatricals organized before a church service commences in
order to prove the power of prayer.
In conclusion, the evidenced advanced in support of prayer and healing holds more than that of the
opposing group as credible references are provided. For instance, the point regarding crowds that
followed Jesus for healing has been repeated severally in the Bible, which gives it credit. Notably,
prayer plays a crucial role in people's life, which explains the different attitudes held by people
regarding their suffering or well being, which proves the point that prayer contributes to healing.
Most major religions involve prayer in one way or another. Some ritualize the act of prayer,
requiring a strict sequence of actions or placing a restriction on who is permitted to pray, while
others teach that prayer may be practiced spontaneously by anyone at any time.
Scientific studies regarding the use of prayer have mostly concentrated on its effect on the healing of
sick or injured people. Meta–studies of the studies in this field have been performed showing
evidence only for no effect or a potentially small effect. For instance, a 2006 meta analysis on 14
studies concluded that

Does God Hear The Prayers Of Sinners?
Does God Hear the Prayers of Sinners?
Communication is always a two–way street. Just because our lips are moving doesn't necessarily
mean we're communicating. If you've ever been distracted by the television, your smart phone, or
the newspaper while your spouse was trying to talk to you then you know exactly what I mean. For
genuine communication to occur you need at least one person speaking in a way the listener can
understand, encouraging the listener to be engaged. You also need a listener who's motivated to
receive, analyze and respond to whatever they're hearing.
Communication with God is a two–way street as well. God speaks to us through His revealed word,
while we speak to God through prayer. All classes of people pray to God: Christians, religious non–
Christians, those who consider themselves "spiritual", even agnostics and atheists pray to a higher
power occasionally. Since so many different kinds of people involve themselves in prayer we ask,
"Does God hear/heed the prayers of sinners?"
A major problem of ours is when we try to take the meaning for the word "sin" or "sinner" in one
verse, and assume it means the same thing in every other passage. However, the concept of a
"sinner" means different things in different contexts. Sometimes it refers to someone who has
violated God's standard, even one time (c.f. Romans 3:23). Sometimes it refers to a person who's
never entered into a covenant relationship with God (1 Peter 4:18). Sometimes it refers to a person
who

When you pray, do you feel that Yahweh God Almighty is ignoring your prayer? After all, prayer is
communication with Yahweh; it is a two–way conversation. So when it seems as though your
prayers are not being answered, there may be good reasons for it.
There are hindrances to prayers––things and behaviors that will prevent an answered prayer. Here,
let us briefly go over some of these hindrances, so we can learn to eliminate them in our lives.
Disbelief
"But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven
by the wind and tossed. For let that man not think that he will receive anything from the Lord. He is
a double–minded man, unstable in all his ways." (James 1:6–8, WEB)
When we pray to Yahweh, we need to have the right heart attitude of belief. Yahweh is Almighty,
and His very name means "He who chooses to become," meaning that He has the ability and power
to be and do anything He wants. When we ask for something yet doubt whether He can grant the
request, we are treating Him as

Grace And Peace At The Name Of Our Lord Jesus Christ Essay
Grace and peace to you in the name of our lord Jesus Christ.
We are entering into the season of Lent starting our Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday the Feb.10th.
Lent is a very special season for me. The spiritual discipline of the season of Lent gives me
reassurance and confidence to remind myself that Jesus died for my sins on the cross and I am saved
by grace alone (Sola Gratia).
I would like share with you a prayer called, Examen of Consciousness developed by St. Ignatius of
Loyola (1491–1556) founder of Jesuits. This prayer is about how we can find God in all things. The
key to healthy spirituality is to find God in all things and work constantly to gain freedom in our life
in order to cooperate with God's will. This prayer is prayed twice daily. Making time for prayer
allows us to fully feel God's presence in our lives and enter into a deeper more intimate conversation
with God. This will also enable us to discern God's will in our lives.
This is a version of the five–step Daily Examen that St. Ignatius practiced and encouraged the
brothers to practice daily.
1. Become aware of God's presence.
2. Review the day with gratitude.
3. Pay attention to your emotions.
4. Choose one feature of the day and pray from it.
5. Look toward tomorrow.
1. Become aware of God's presence. Look back on the events of the day in the company of the Holy
Spirit. The day may seem confusing to you–a blur, a jumble, a muddle. Ask God to bring clarity and

"Jesus Creed" Response Paper
The Jesus Creed has really helped me to look at Scripture from what I believe is a more biblical and
Jesus centered perspective. While I have read the words Jesus used from Deuteronomy 6:4–9 and
Leviticus 19:18 many times in Scripture, I never considered how all His teachings might have
stemmed from them. I did not know Jesus had amended the Shema of Judaism because I didn't
know there was a Shema before reading this book, but now knowing this I can more clearly see
what Jesus was doing. He was correcting a misunderstanding how some used and understood the
Torah. Most paid excellent attention to the letter of the Law; ... Show more content on

Just as the Kaddish speaks of God's name being magnified, sanctified and that His kingdom would
be established soon; The Kaddish of Jesus (Lord's Prayer) does likewise. The difference is that Jesus
changes how we approach God (as Abba), that we should love others as well and petition for others
too. So we see that the Lord's Prayer is really made up of Love–of–God petitions and Love–of–
others petitions, which we see stems from Jesus' Shema. Simply put, the Lord's Prayer is Jesus
teaching us to pray the Shema, He radically altered both by redefining love of God and by adding
love of others. I never knew much if anything about Judaism's Shema or Kaddish however, now that
I do it has made a world of difference in how I view the Gospels, especially many of the parables
within them. I certainly now why most Torah observant Jews wanted to get Jesus out of the picture
as fast as possible, He changed everything. Who was this illegitimate child, as most considered Him,
to be changing such things and making Himself out to be God? These bits of information are
extremely valuable and have helped me to really have a better feel for just how radical a shift Jesus
was presenting to those of His day, something we just don't see too clearly today. As I mentioned
prior, Jesus taught that we should approach God as Abba. It's

My Prayer Time With God
My whole life I was raised in a Catholic family only believing in Mary, Jesus mother. Until, my
parents sent me to a Christian school which wasn't something I agree with. I would always ask
myself why did my parents send me to a Christian school instead of a Catholic school. But over the
years I was interested in knowing more about the bible and God. I finally decided to be saved back
in 2009 when I finally understood the meaning of living for eternity in heaven. Although, I've
always had problems with praying because I was afraid of not saying the right words or starting with
"Father, thank you for this day." Every time, I was chosen to pray over everyone on the inside I
didn't want to forget anything I should pray about. Throughout the years, I learned that our words
are powerful not only to others but to God. I decided to work on my prayer time with God since I
tend to forget to pray for all the blessings he provides for me every day. Each day I've spend at least
fifteen minutes praying to God over all the people I care about trying to not forget or leave out
anyone. It has helped me realize the power of prayer which I was afraid about in the past about
making a mistake. Now, I can say with confidence that prayer is always the answer when we feel
sad, anger or hurt. I didn't understand why it took me a long time to truly comprehend the meaning
of prayer and how it helps us communicate with God. Prayer is something that should come out
naturally from your mouth but that

Is this simply a prayer recited by many, under varying circumstances or might there be more to these
words then fits our eye? We find this prayer in Matthew 6 and again in Luke 11. The disciples were
being instructed by Jesus. We have in these two books and chapters a record of Jesus ' lessons and
more. There is so much in this discussion with Jesus ' disciples many simply overlook or don 't take
for the same value as the Lord 's Prayer which itself is within the same chapters.
The lessons and advice is very pointed but we seldom get beyond the Lord 's Prayer. Why? It is too
obvious. We want what fits our lives but not what goes against our preferred lifestyle, attitudes and
way of worship; or secular lives. We repeat the prayer out of habit or in our form of worship but
seldom listen to what is being recited. The circumstances (Luke 11:1): Jesus had just finished
praying and "one of his disciples said to him. 'Lord, teach us to pray". This is a chapter break in
Luke, but in Matthew the same request does not come until after a brief explanation of when,

Praying in a certain place, His disciples came to Him asking him and said, "teach us how to pray
like the Christ (Matt. 6:9–13)." Prayer is defined as personal communication with God. The
definition is very broad. What we call "prayer" includes prayers of request for ourselves or for
others (sometime called prayers of partition or intercession), confession of sin, adoration, praise and
thanksgiving, and also God communicates to us is an indication of his response.
Text Background:
The Lord's Prayer often refers to as "The Disciple's Prayer's." A timeless masterpiece serves as a
model for all prayer and contains all the essential elements of an effective prayer (New Unger's
Handbook. Larson. 369). In Jesus's prayers there was the incomparable union of simplicity and
depth, serenity, and earnestness in comparison to John. The prayer He prescribes was indeed the
preface and prelude that the spirit in all ages of His disciples and Church age will give them a right
standing; "as sinners, yet sons; son still, however sinful (Matthew 6:9–13)." The Lord's Prayer
begins with "Father in heaven" (Matthew 6:19), a common form of reference to God in ancient
Jewish prayer. Within the Old Testament, prophets and poets repeatedly used the imagery of father
to refer to God. By identifying God as "Father," the biblical authors recall the facts that we are all
God's creation, and as His children, we have a responsibility to obey Him and follow His

Analytical Essay: The Legitimacy Of The Prayer In Luke
The prayer itself, according to professor Green, has affinities to Jewish tradition, especially to the
Qaddish, and the Eighteen Benedictions as the former begins in a manner analogous to Jesus' model
prayer. The point here is not to argue the legitimacy of Jesus' prayer recorded in Luke or if it
happened for real. But rather to understand why Luke chose to only incorporate this version of the
prayer in his text. Professor Green in his commentary on this verse explain that the prayer in Luke
"is much concern with the shaping of prayer in relation to an accurate recognition of the one to
whom prayer is offered" (Green 446). Jesus taught his disciple to refer to God as "Father" in this
prayer and by doing this, "God is presented by Luke as the father who cares for his children and acts
redemptively on their behalf".
Other version of the gospel in which we see Jesus teaching his disciples to pray are found in other
gospel like Matthew 6:9–13 which is somewhat parallels with the prayer in Luke 11:2–4 but with
different settings. In Matthew's account, there were more members, and the prayer is more
elaborated in language. But, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to

What we see happening at the end of this lesson here is Jesus encouraging his disciples to pray, and
telling them of the fatherhood of God. Professor Green in his commentary on this verse puts is best
when he says "we see Jesus comparing human fathers with the heavenly father...Jesus maintains that

children request with malice...human parents give "good gifts", while God gives what he has

let everyone else know Peter was there. When she told the people gathered together, they did not
believe her. Meanwhile, Peter continued knocking on the door. When the door opened, they all were
shocked to see Peter standing before them again.

So Peter finds his way to this home, and the Bible says that many were there gathered together and
were praying. Here is a case in which prayer and living were simultaneous. They are still praying.
God has already answered some of the prayers in the past. He has placed Peter in a test of obedience
with prayer. The Bible teaches us to

2 Kings 42-44 Essay
2 Kings 4:42–44 tells the story of a man who comes to Elisha with bread during a time of famine.
Elisha asks the man to give his bread to the people to eat but the man questions him, saying that his
twenty loaves of bread will be insufficient in feeding all one hundred hungry people. Elisa restates
his request adding that it is the word of the LORD, and when the man complies all one hundred
people are fed with leftover bread to spare. While reading this passage one can find greater
understanding by observing three subsections, or levels, of meaning. The structure of this passage
aids in identifying important aspects of the story through repetition which can later help with
understanding the surface–level meaning and the overall communal message being conveyed.
In a structural sense, 2 Kings 4:42–44 is a one paragraph story containing three parts. First the
situation is stated followed by a suggestion by Elisha and then an outcome. There is repetition
emphasizing the word of the LORD when elisha states the order saying "thus says the LORD" and
in the end when the story is confirmed saying "according to the word of

That's wonderful. Now, let me show you how to focus upon God. What I am preparing to say might
sound like an undergraduate or graduate student that you know: When the sun rises and the college
student stumbles out of their dorm beds, the first thing they do is pick up their cell phone. They
check their text messages and voice messages, and they look at the latest gossip posted on social
network. What they can't see is the enemy's tactic to lure them into his daily deception. Once they
have succumbed to the devil's fraudulent ways, do you think they should sit back and wait for God
to create paths to their college success? I learned that God always holds true to His part of the plan,
but since we live in a high–tech informational wave, we become influenced by its profound trends.
These new–day trends reach way past anything we have ever seen, and if we aren't careful, we can
get addicted to checking a quick text message; listening to a voice message, and connecting online
with family or old friends. If we want to escape the temptation to move God outside our college life,
which changes should cleave to, instead of reaching for our cell phone first thing in the morning,

Prayer Is An Essential Discipline Of The Christian Faith
Introduction
Prayer is an essential discipline of the Christian faith. History and cultural differences show us that
many people engage in many different ways and techniques to pray and communicate with God.
How do you find the right way for you?
Summarise your original understanding of the discipline before the course started
Having been a Christian for many years I thought that I had a fair knowledge of what it meant to
pray. I was amazed and humbled by the idea that through Jesus' restorative act on the cross I am able
to come into God's presence – and not only come but be welcomed and even longed for. I believed
that prayer is a powerful tool to petition God , a vehicle to praise Him , and an instrument to
increase our intimacy with Him . I understood that people pray in a variety of ways, based on the
teaching they have received, their experience, and even their personality. Most commonly, I engaged
in prayer as a conversation with God.
A Significant Christian figure in history who has contributed to this discipline
A person who was significant in articulating and exploring conversational prayer with God was a
Spanish nun, St Teresa of Avila. She was a prominent teacher of prayer and became a reformer of
her Catholic order in the sixteenth century . She is quoted in her book 'The Way of Perfection' as
saying, "Speak with Him as with a Father, a Brother, a Lord and a Spouse – sometimes in one way
and sometimes in another, He will teach you what you must do to please

My Father 's Life Comes Pain
With Life Comes Pain
Late one night, to my horror, the most exuberant girl in the hall collapsed limply on her friend's
shoulder as she cried hysterically. All she could say was, "My brother is dead. My brother is gone."
At this moment, I had to stop and think. I was forced to remember that God gives us trials because
He loves us. Heavenly Father has a plan for every single one of His children. He has provided a way
for us to feel comfort as we remember that we will see my friend's wonderful brother again. During
the earlier years of the world, our Father in Heaven provided this miraculous way through the loving
sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. This sacrifice is called the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
The Perfect Sacrifice
According to Romans 6:23, Adam's transgression would have caused man to forever be separated
from God. There needed to be a way to overcome death; a way that could only come about through
the "vicarious sacrifice of one who was sinless and who could therefore take upon Himself the sins
of all mankind" (Ballard). Blessedly, Jesus Christ courageously sacrificed and created this way for
all people. Not only is Jesus Christ a solution to Adam's transgression, but He is the only solution to
Adam's transgression. No one else could have successfully performed the Atonement. I am forever
grateful for the anguish that Jesus Christ willingly suffered in order to give me and everyone else the
ability to live with Him again. The Atonement of Jesus Christ is so

The Prayer Service Of Fifty Participants
Not too long ago, a Catholic lay minister, "John," approached me to discuss a concern he has with
his parish's lay evangelization ministry. In addition to their parish's weekly prayer service of fifty
participants, this ministry organizes and facilitates a quarterly Catholic Evangelization Congress for
their deanery that gathers between three to five hundred people. Consequently, some lay ministers
have given greater importance to the major quarterly religious services they organize for their
deanery than to their parish's weekly prayer service, going to tremendous lengths to bring renowned
speakers that would draw the greatest number of participants. This is frustrating to John because
these lay ministers have expressed minimal interest in discovering how to engage many of these
participants more effectively. Unfortunately, many of them do not attend the prayer services–and
seldom attend the Sunday Mass as well–unless a popular Catholic (ordained) minister is
participating. John wonders if the ministry is providing a disservice by ignoring this issue.
At the heart of John's concern is the question of who or what do people follow and how. It is an
inquiry that relates to a biblical passage found in one of the Gospels. "As Jesus passed on from
there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, 'Follow me.' And he
got up and followed him." (Mt 9:9) Prior to meeting Jesus, Matthew, also known as Levi, followed
the path of fortune. As a tax collector,

Comparison: Consumerism and Christianity
This holiday season will you be standing in line for Black Friday deals? Black Friday is
often viewed as the epitome of consumerism, but it is actually an example of an extreme, not the
typical every day sort of consumerism. In all actuality there are many aspects of consumerism,
some beneficial and some harmful to the populace. As humans were created to consume,
consumerism and Christianity are compatible, but only in so far as consumerism does not
become a fully materialistic pursuit. This is clearly demonstrated largely by biblical standards as
will be discussed further on. However, in order to understand how the ideologies of
consumerism and Christianity are compatible, one must first understand consumerism.
Consumerism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is to the advantage of the consumer or buyer as the
competition between businesses will, in time and as time progresses even beyond that, provide
better products at lower prices (Wilkens 53). Unfortunately, not every facet of consumerism can
be viewed in such a positive light.
There are three major negatives tied into consumerism: materialism, lack of contentment,
and reductionism. Of the three negatives listed above, materialism is generally the first to
manifest itself in daily life. Materialism places greater emphasis on the material, the physical,
above all else. Once a person enters into this ideology, he or she will typically begin seeking out
items deemed to be greater or suggest higher status (Wilkens 45). This attitude can quickly lead
to an inability to be content. If a person is not satisfied with his or her possessions or status,
consumerism would suggest that the individual seek out material objects that would further him
or her in life. This produces a lifestyle of purchasing goods with the intent of feeling better about
one's self and ultimately trying to be the best (Wilkens 45, 46). When a person postures his or
her heart in this way, it does not take much to move from a mentality of greed to one of all out
reductionism.

What Would Jesus Do in Today's World
Your favorite band is coming to town. Tickets are $100–$150, and you want to attend the concert
and enjoy a special dinner beforehand. However, you have other financial obligations which include
credit card bills, tuition, books, rent, car payment, a cell phone bill, etc. What would Jesus do? Jesus
preaches a kingdom without living in excess or greed; he values the humble servant role. According
to Matthew, Kraybill, and in class worksheets, Jesus would spend his money on financial obligations
and not on a concert. Who is Jesus in the book of Matthew? In Matthew 6, Jesus advocated
treasures in heaven over treasures on earth. "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where
moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think this means to not worry and to trust in God that your needs will be met, but only if one
believes in the Lord. The question of how to spend money could also be connected in Matthew 16
when Jesus spoke about discipleship. Jesus asked of his disciples, "What profit would there be for
one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life" (Matthew 16:26). I connect this with verses listed
earlier, how Jesus preached against materialism and monetary obsession. I think that Jesus is saying
a life wasting money is a life wasted. That life is more meaningful when the focus is not on money.
I also think the verse of the rich young man could be connected to how Jesus would spend his
money. In Matthew 19:21–23, Jesus preached to a rich young man to sell his possessions and give to
the poor, and then that young man would no longer be rich on earth but he would be rich in heaven.
The young man did not want to sell his possessions, and I think that rich young man is the type of
person who would spend money living in excess. The rich young man would spend his money on a
concert, which is the complete opposite of what Jesus would do. According to the parables
worksheet done in class, the parable of the rich fool is another example of how Jesus instructed us to
not live a life focused on money. Luke 12:16–21 is about a life rich in possessions versus a life rich
in God. The rich fool built a bigger

Christ, the Paradigm of Leadership
Discussions in what makes effective leaders are ones as long as history itself. It is a topic of constant
study and debate where everyone seems to have a view and where definitions of leadership are as
varied as their explanations. More recent day definitions and studies have focused on leadership and
change, vision building and empowering others. Thus, leaders are people who are able to think and
act creatively in non–routine situations – and who set out to influence the actions, beliefs and
feelings of others. In this sense being a leader is personal. It flows from an individual's qualities and
actions. However, it is also often linked to some other role such as manager or expert. Here there
can be a lot of confusion. Not all managers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this regard the shepherd of the Lord's flock leads by modeling godliness and righteousness in his
own life and encourages others to follow his example.
Deuteronomy 8:3 states: "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the
mouth of the Lord." We as sheep need nourishment to be strong and vibrant Christians. This
nourishment comes from one place and one place only–The Holy Bible. The Bible, not the
psychology of the world's wisdom, is the only nourishment that can sustain a healthy Christian
lifestyle. Serving as our Good Shepherd, Christ will lead us to the most lush pastures and abundant
streams.
Many Christians throughout history have faced persecution, have had to deal with temptation and
have been wounded by spirits that mean to deter us from maximizing our spiritual potential. A
shepherd, knowing one of his sheep is ailing, shows compassion and love towards his sheep. The
Lord has promised us that he will "bind up the injured and strengthen the weak". (Ezekiel 34:16) As
Christians today, we suffer many injuries to our spirits and need compassionate leaders who
understand our pain and are willing to listen to our concerns. "Becoming a servant leader requires a
great deal of motivation, feedback, and extended practice, as does any worthwhile discipline." We
are in need of leaders who will help bear our burden, and sympathize with our unique
circumstances.

New Testament Exegesis
New Testament Exegesis – Gospel of Matthew: Concerning Prayer (6:5–14)
Introduction
Matthew 6:9–13 records the Lord's Prayer in the account of Jesus Christ. Jesus gave this model
prayer to his disciples in the Sermon on the Mount (Greenman, 2012: 4). The Lord's Prayer has been
central to Christian liturgy and tradition ever since.
This essay will first summarise the literary structure and historical context, including authorship and
date and location of writing and audience of the gospel of Matthew. Followed by an overview and
detailed account of the passage Matthew 6:9–13 before summarising the theological message and
application for today's Christians.
Literary structure
Matthew narrates the story of Jesus. The implied author of the Gospel of Matthew uses all the
elements of the narrative to guide the implied reader's response. The entire text is rhetorical
(Anderson, 1994: 46).
It is clear to scholars such as Gardner that Matthew 'organizes material systematically at the level of
literary units and the sections to which they belong' (Gardner, 2013: Kindle Locations 239–242).
The basic structure of the text is as follows: the Practice of Prayer (6: 5–15 6: 5–6), the Manner of
Prayer (6: 7–13), the Language of Prayer (6: 14–15) and finally Forgiveness and Prayer (Gardner,
2013: Kindle Locations 1843–1844).
Of note, Matthew particularly rearranges Mark's material in the earlier chapters of the Gospel,
especially through the insertion of the Sermon on the Mount (chaps.

Questions On Expectations Affect Your Experiences Essay
Did you know?
Expectations affect your experiences in life.
Meaning: Your outlook going into a situation will affect your outcome.
Example: A child raised in a poor home was always told no when she asks for anything. She 'd ask
for new shoes or to go on a trip, but they were too poor. Growing up, she began to dislike the word
no and found it nearly impossible to ask anyone for anything. She feared to be told no even when
she needed things badly. So she missed out on opportunities to better herself because she expected
the same negative results that hurt her so long ago. It wasn 't until much later in life, through the
power of Faith in Christ, was she free from this fear and began to change and grow. What looks like
a tiny mustard seed has grown into a plant taller than her.
A well know saying:
FAITH, even as small as a mustard seed, can move mountains. Because in those days, it was nearly
impossible to move large amounts of rock and soil. But, look at what we can do today. We move
mountains little by little to make way for roads and bridges. Someone had enough FAITH to do it.
Matthew 17:20 says: He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you
have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and
it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you." What situation looks impossible to you?

become broken through carelessness and forgetfulness. It makes you wonder why it is so hard to
follow simple rules in life. Adam and Eve broke the one rule God gave them in the Garden of Eden.

Prayer is often a thing that is neglected because of various reasons. We are told in Romans 12:12 to
"Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." This is similar to Matthew 6: 5–8, which
talks about how and where to pray. "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love
to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you,
they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and
pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward
you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard
because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you
ask him." After explaining this, Jesus says the Lord's Prayer and talks about forgiveness. Prayer is
very crucial part in your relationship with God. Through prayer, you are able to talk to God and tell
him about your fears and struggles. This is why you should be devoted and faithful in prayer.
I think it is important to obey the things God tells you to do like loving your enemies, not taking
revenge, and being faithful in prayer. It is hard to follow what God tells us to do, because we are
only human. We are not perfect and because of that, we struggle everyday with temptation. This is
why we need God to help us

The Sermon Of The Mount
The sermon of the mount is covered in the book of Matthew, which in retrospect was a teaching on
the side of a mountain amongst Jesus' disciples. All of the disciples climbed along side of Jesus
upon the mountain side, just to accumulate the knowledge in which Jesus lectured about. Some of
the things that Jesus address in his teachings where such things as, the fundamentals of becoming a
Christian, in addition to the rules of living the Christian life, finally is to know when things aren't as
they seem to be in Christianity.
The fundamentals of being a Christian, is seemingly simple to some, but for the individuals that are
of the world, being a devout Christian is apparently a substantial stride to take in one's life. Case in
point, I was once considered of the world, and I found that becoming a Christian wasn't that hard of
a step as I had imagined, with the courage and commitment along with Jesus guiding my path, I
have continuously walked by faith and not by sight to receive blessings after blessings. Anyone that
is wanting to become a Christian, Know that your blessings will start to come in abundance, yet
realize that because you're a Christian now, does not mean that you get to take the road which has
seen a multitude of journeys, you should know that your Christian test will be much more

The Crucible Chapter 1-2 Analysis
1. "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and
it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave
of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind." (James 1:5–6, ESV) James calls upon the people of
God to pray for wisdom. But not to just pray for wisdom, but to do so in faith. James calls the
unfaithful man "double–minded" as he is still has not fully trusted in Christ. James also condemns
the Jews for praying only for their passions. The world James is fighting against is that of
superiority–complexes and careless living. "Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone
cheerful? Let him sing praise." (James 5:13, ESV) Christ is the solution to the problem. It is our
duty to ask him in time of need and praise him in times of joy. ... Show more content on

James warns against the selfishness many have when speaking to God, "You ask and do not receive,
because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. You adulterous people! Do you not know
that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the
world makes himself an enemy of God." (James 4:3–4, ESV) The sins of the Jewish people were
great. Perhaps the greatest was that of zeal towards their passions. James made it a focal point of his
book to discuss the importance of prayer, but also the dangers of praying incorrectly. Jesus taught
the disciples the way to prayer. We should model all of our prayers after the Lord's Prayer. In that
prayer we ask for mercy on ourselves and mercy of our neighbor, as well as our daily needs.

The Prayer Of The Sacred
For most religions, the sacred feels as though it is out of reach or untouchable. One typically cannot
have a direct conversation with whom they consider sacred, so they pray to their god(s), hoping that
their prayers will be heard and answered. Another aspect of following a religion is having a deep
feeling of either love, respect or fear for the sacred. No matter the feeling, it is critical for one who
follows it to reach out with prayer and tell their sacred how they feel, profess their faith and ask for
guidance. Inside sacred texts, there may be scriptures which are "considered privileged and
normative for a particular tradition"(Sacred Quest. Cunningham). Scriptures such as "The Lord's

Next, it says , "hallowed be thy name" (Lord's Prayer. Traditional).. Essentially the speaker is again,
acknowledging not only the importance of the name of the sacred, but again reiterating that the
sacred is so far above the speaker, that they must address that even as they are speaking to him. The
next line goes, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is Heaven" (Lord's Prayer.
Traditional).. The speaker is saying that they bode to the will of their Lord, though he is in Heaven
and they are on Earth. No matter the distance between the sacred and the speaker, they will do the

day and the time and the means to do get through it. Religion is a very powerful entity and when
people are going through struggles, often they will turn to the sacred for guidance and help. The
speaker is asking the Lord to help them get through what they are going through by giving them
what they need to do it, (i.e. the daily bread). Next, the speaker says "And forgive us our trespasses

It Happened Within A Pray Meeting
It Happened in a Pray Meeting
In the Comunidad Cristiana Nueva Esperanza (New Hope Christian Community) every Tuesday at
7: 00 PM we met to pray, although sometimes only has been my family and I, (we are the pastoral
family). However we have insisted inviting people of the church to come. Initially, perhaps being
that, the beginning was further assistance, but the temptation to which we are subjected when we
decided to unite to talk to God is much stronger than "normal" (?) and some succumb, the soup
opera, tiredness, football game, the child or any other excuse is quite powerful to put forward as a
reason for not going. There are still those who used lies to justify his absence when give more
weight to fatigue and other things than to talk to God in communion with others. Yet Jesus took their
group to retire to pray, Peter, Jacob and John.
Is there some value in the pray meeting? People suggest this idea because of their absence of many
these meetings. Hey! Many people sing "I like to be in your home celebrating with thy people..."
and even jumping and dance in the "spirit" singing this contemporary, anthem. This is why I say that
people lie, because when they are invited to the pray meeting they like to sing "I like to be in my
house...". Seem to say that that, does not have any value that these meetings belongs to the "past"
generations. But God has other plans...

Leadership is the process of influencing the activities of induvial or organized groups so that they

Leading a team or group is a real skill that takes time, thought and dedication. Leadership is the
most studied aspect of business and any kind of organization because it is the one overarching topic
that makes the difference between success and failure. A church leader is one of the leader that I
respect all the time. Church Leadership is designed to enable those whose lives and interests are

Clean Well Light Place Essay
Clean Well Light Place A Clean Well Lighted Place Earnest Hemmingway Analysis The
conversation starts out with the narrator setting up the story and the scene, as most do. An indication
is made about the setting in the café with the leaves giving a shadow and hence telling us that the
story was taking place on a patio or street of the café. An old man that was deaf and seems to be on
hard times, which he was, especially after finding out that he had recently tried to commit suicide.
One of the waiters who's table the old man was sitting at began to get impatient with him just sitting
there taking up his time, that he felt was better suited for sleep since three–o–clock in the morning
was too late for bedtime.
This was one indicator ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the younger waiter had left and the bartender came into play, it reminded me of the same
scenario that had just played out between the younger waiter and the old man.
This time it was the bartender somewhat being the young waiter and the older waiter being the old
man. When he said the Lords Prayer replacing words with "nada" he was giving the inclination that
no one really gave a damn, and he might as well play out the cards life is dealing him. He also
continued to talk about the lighting in the place as if he and the old man felt safe because of it,
almost a kind of phobia about the dark. Safe in the shadow of the leaves of the trees, yet he could
see everything and everyone around him. At the end when he was going to bed and the sun was
coming up he said that he must have insomnia, and made it expectable by believing that a lot of
people have it, so nothing was wrong with him. The older waiter and the old man seem to both be
suffering from depression, however, the older man was in a far more advanced state of the problem.
The older waiter could see that his life of loneliness would eventually perpetuate into what he had
experience that night during his visit with the other waiter and how the old man had been treated. I
think that as we get older we also realize that life can take turns for the worse and true realization of
what could happen to us is more believable. When we are younger everyone likes to

What Does It Mean To Say In Matthew 6

  • 1. What Does It Mean To Say In Matthew 6 In Matthew 6 of the Bible, Jesus explains how he wants his followers to pray and fast, and he gives an example of what kinds of prayers should be said to God. Many times, Jesus advises against "verbose prayer, flamboyant fasting, and devotions designed merely to get attention" (Matthew 6: l– 8). In the modern Christian religion, many churches' practices seem to negate what Jesus advised to do in this text. Members of churches often display their faith to others, praying loudly, publicly, and oftentimes, repetitively. It is thus difficult to decide what the "correct" ways are to pray and act in modern Christianity if the practices of churches either reject or ignore this notable passage in the Bible. Matthew 6 begins with Jesus saying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The text advises one to not pray or show acts of kindness publicly mainly so that others can see, but it seems as though the purpose of some churches is just the opposite. Churches have become a space for groups of people to come together, listen to a clergy member profess their faith and the word of God, pray loudly and proudly sometimes repetitive prayers, and encourage others to do the same. Christian charities are open about showing their donations as a way to encourage others to do the same to display faith in God. This is not suggesting that their practices are entirely hypocritical or heretical, as their practices seem to coincide with the lessons of other Christian texts. This just means that there are inconsistencies between the teachings and practices of some modern Christian churches and the text of Matthew ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Greco-Christian Beliefs Of Christianity And The Gospel Of... The Greek Alexander Romance describes the life of Alexander the Great, focusing primarily on his great military feats as a leader of Greece and highlighting why he is remembered as a great Greco– Roman leader. Similarly, the Gospel of Matthew explains the life of Jesus Christ through his teachings and miracles, which underline why he is known as the greatest figure from Judeo– Christian culture. Alexander and Jesus easily compare because they died in their early thirties, were known as kings, and are remembered for impressive triumphs while on earth. Alexander sought to build his empire and essentially rule the world through victories on the battlefield and the conquering of neighboring countries. Jesus sought to destroy evil on earth by establishing God's Kingdom and teachings in the hearts of all. Comparing the lives of these great Greco–Roman and Judeo–Christian leaders highlight the differences in cultural opinion on the highest good in life, how one obtains that good, and what that means in connection to an afterlife. Judeo–Christian and Greco–Roman perspectives on elements of a meaningful life contrast in the sense that Judeo– Christian actions to pursue these elements are motivated by the desire for everlasting life in heaven, while Greco–Roman actions are motivated by the desire for perpetual fame on earth after one dies. Both Alexander the Great and Jesus Christ establish relationships with their communities in order to obtain their respective highest good in life. In an effort to bring salvation for all, Jesus tried to lead everyone on earth on the path towards the kingdom of heaven. In the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew, God says that Jesus will, "save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). The idea of salvation is repeated later when Jesus himself announces, "He who endures to the end will be saved" suggesting that whoever follows his guidance on redemption will be able to go to heaven (Matthew 10:22). On the other hand in The Greek Alexander Romance, Alexander seeks to obtain the highest good of power by uniting surrounding empires under his rule and becoming the "ruler of the world" (66). In an effort to build unity and trust in him, he fought alongside his men on the front line in battle. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. How Jesus' Life Affected Our Lives When we look back on Jesus' life, we can see how his life affected ours. Jesus was the Messiah. He was sent by God to do great things. Not only did he save people, but also he sacrificed himself to for everyone's sins. I have learned many things about Jesus in Christian Worldview and even more when reading about his life and biblical principles. We can learn how Jesus was important through Messianic Prophecies, Jesus' Teachings, and His Miracles. We can learn how Jesus was important through Messianic Prophecies. A prophecy that stands out comes from Isaiah 9. It says that, "The people who walk in darkness will see a great light." It also says that, "For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Isaiah prophesied that Jesus, the child born would become their deliverer, the Messiah. In a time of great darkness, God promised to send a light to shine on everyone living a life full of sin. It turns out that this message came to be true, with the birth of Christ, he came to deliver. Another prophecy that is important is the one in Isaiah 53 that talks about Jesus' sacrifice for us. In verses 1–3, it talks about how Jesus was treated like an ordinary man. He had no outward beauty or majesty, and he was "despised and rejected." Then, in verse 7, it says that he was "led like a lamb to the slaughter." In the Old Testament, people often gave ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Colossian Passage Significance After reviewing the context and the meaning of the passage in Colossians, the significance and contemporary application can be discovered. The significance of a passage can help determine the relationship between the meaning and the reader. In essence, the last step in bridging the gap that separates modern man from the ancient text is to determine the significance of a passage. The meaning of scripture is stable and does not change, but significance, in how it relates to life, is usually never the same. There are many prayers in the word of God that should and can impact the lives of people today. A person must learn and absorb the words of those prayers. Within the context of Paul's prayer for the Colossians, he gave exceptional instruction. In looking back through Colossians 1:9–14, most, if not all, of Paul's intended prayer and instruction is directly relative to modern man. Paul's anticipated impact on the church at Colossae is just as impactful to the church of today. Beginning with verse 9, the example that Paul set by praying for fellow brothers and sisters should be noted and incorporated into a person's daily prayer life. In the last part of verse 9, he prayed for the knowledge of the Lord's will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. It would be beneficial to keep the state of mind that there is always more knowledge to be obtain through prayer and study of the Bible. There is a much greater possibility of being influenced by false ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Bible And The Lord's Prayer I got very annoyed and was very disturbed when Moore discussed the ordination of women in the Catholic Church; as well as the discussion about changing the words of the Bible and the Lord's Prayer. First, Moore discusses feminist liberal movements changing the wording of the Bible: "Proffered gender–neutral language, substituting 'brothers and sisters' for 'brothers,' interpreting the pronoun 'He' as the proper noun 'God,' and using 'Our Parent' instead of 'Our Father' in the Lord's Prayer (Moore 143). The Lord's Prayer was given to us by Christ in the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke. To turn around and decide you don't like the wording so you're going to change it is very disturbing to me. The prevalence of the idea of gender–neutral ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Symbols and Symbolism in A Clean Well-Lighted Place, By... Symbolism in A Clean Well–Lighted Place Symbolism, may be defined as a non–superficial representation of an idea or belief that goes beyond what is "seen." Earnest Hemingway's "A Clean Well–Lighted Place" uses symbolism to help convey the theme of Nihilism, the philosophy that there is nothing heavenly to believe in. It discusses that there is no supernatural reason or explanation of how the world is today. Three symbols: the soldier, the café, and the shadows of the leaves, found in Hemingway's short story clearly displays this Nihilistic theme. The first clear display of Nihilism by the use of symbols is the brief passage description of the soldier passing the café with the prostitute. This imagery ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The light is supposed to let the reader see that the guard is corrupt when he should be a loyal and an example to the community. Hemingway's second portrayal of symbolism that a reader may distinguish is the café itself. The café represents a sanctuary of the evilness of the world. The namesake of the short story is a clue for the reader to see that the café would represent some form of an asylum not only from the elements of nature, but also safety from evil. An example of the usefulness of this sanctuary is how the deaf old man uses the café as a safe–haven to be to himself after the incident where he almost succeeded in committing suicide and enjoys the comfort the café gives. The old waiter represents in the café the kindness and caring that the café should provide; whereas the younger waiter is more of a materialistic character. He clearly displays shallowness and selfishness. Arthur Waldhorn writes that the older waiter helps keep the light on a little longer at the café for those, who like himself, 'do not want to go to bed.' (P 28) The younger waiter is a protagonist in attitude of the older waiter. The philosophy of Nihilism is brought into this theme when the older man recites the Lord's Prayer but substitutes the word "nada" for every noun in it. Nihilism is brought onto a larger scale because it is very evident that there is nothing to believe in, even as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Yearning for Peace in Hemingway's A Clean, Well-Lighted... Yearning for Peace in Hemingway's A Clean, Well–Lighted Place While Hemingway's short story "A Clean, Well–Lighted Place" is usually interpreted as an intensely poetic description of despair, it can with equal validity be seen instead as mankind's never ending yearning to find spiritual peace. Hemingway's short story displayed this emotional journey in many different ways. First, the title itself is a symbol for man's desire to find a state of tranquillity, safety, and comfort. Hemingway also showed this in the story's setting, which was used as a symbol for a sense of order, for it was late, the cafe was empty, and the men there were at ease. Finally, Hemingway showed this desire in the contrasting actions between the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here he was showing that in one's lowest level of despair, man's one and only desire is to find a safe haven, and to acquire a sense of security. Finding a sense of security and meaning to life was very important to Hemingway who was known to feel that the individual quest for meaningful values was a universal one, probably because Hemingway himself struggled to find the true meaning of his life, or the true sense of his purpose. The despair that Hemingway himself felt is best shown in "A Clean, Well–Lighted Place" when the older waiter was intertwined in a conversation with himself. He said that: "It was all a nothing and a man was nothing too. It was only that and light was all it needed and a certain cleanness and order. Some lived in it and never felt it but he knew it was nada y pues nada y nada y pues nada" (383). Nothing and then nothing. When one is in a state of despair, the only thing that one is looking for is a way out of one's situation, or a road that will lead to a peaceful end to one's feelings of hopelessness. Hemingway, however, presented a remarkable example of man's search for an end to his state of hopelessness. When one waiter commented on the deaf man's attempt at taking his own life, he said "Last week he tried to commit suicide." The other waiter replied "Why?" Then he said, "He was in despair" (379). This summed up man's desire, at his lowest level of depression, to find peace, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It takes place after Jesus had been baptized by John the Baptist. This is the longest teaching by Jesus in a single preaching. It is found in the New Testament in the book of Matthew. Prayer can be a form of religious practice, may be either individual or communal and take place in public or in private. It may involve the use of words or song. When language is used, prayer may take the form of a hymn, incantation, formal creed, or a spontaneous utterance in the praying person. Wheeler (2006) also refutes the idea that prayer contributes to healing as he indicates that what is depicted in churches as miracles are theatricals organized before a church service commences in order to prove the power of prayer. In conclusion, the evidenced advanced in support of prayer and healing holds more than that of the opposing group as credible references are provided. For instance, the point regarding crowds that followed Jesus for healing has been repeated severally in the Bible, which gives it credit. Notably, prayer plays a crucial role in people's life, which explains the different attitudes held by people regarding their suffering or well being, which proves the point that prayer contributes to healing. Most major religions involve prayer in one way or another. Some ritualize the act of prayer, requiring a strict sequence of actions or placing a restriction on who is permitted to pray, while others teach that prayer may be practiced spontaneously by anyone at any time. Scientific studies regarding the use of prayer have mostly concentrated on its effect on the healing of sick or injured people. Meta–studies of the studies in this field have been performed showing evidence only for no effect or a potentially small effect. For instance, a 2006 meta analysis on 14 studies concluded that ... • 22. Does God Hear The Prayers Of Sinners? Does God Hear the Prayers of Sinners? Communication is always a two–way street. Just because our lips are moving doesn't necessarily mean we're communicating. If you've ever been distracted by the television, your smart phone, or the newspaper while your spouse was trying to talk to you then you know exactly what I mean. For genuine communication to occur you need at least one person speaking in a way the listener can understand, encouraging the listener to be engaged. You also need a listener who's motivated to receive, analyze and respond to whatever they're hearing. Communication with God is a two–way street as well. God speaks to us through His revealed word, while we speak to God through prayer. All classes of people pray to God: Christians, religious non– Christians, those who consider themselves "spiritual", even agnostics and atheists pray to a higher power occasionally. Since so many different kinds of people involve themselves in prayer we ask, "Does God hear/heed the prayers of sinners?" A major problem of ours is when we try to take the meaning for the word "sin" or "sinner" in one verse, and assume it means the same thing in every other passage. However, the concept of a "sinner" means different things in different contexts. Sometimes it refers to someone who has violated God's standard, even one time (c.f. Romans 3:23). Sometimes it refers to a person who's never entered into a covenant relationship with God (1 Peter 4:18). Sometimes it refers to a person who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After all, prayer is communication with Yahweh; it is a two–way conversation. So when it seems as though your prayers are not being answered, there may be good reasons for it. There are hindrances to prayers––things and behaviors that will prevent an answered prayer. Here, let us briefly go over some of these hindrances, so we can learn to eliminate them in our lives. Disbelief "But let him ask in faith, without any doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed. For let that man not think that he will receive anything from the Lord. He is a double–minded man, unstable in all his ways." (James 1:6–8, WEB) When we pray to Yahweh, we need to have the right heart attitude of belief. Yahweh is Almighty, and His very name means "He who chooses to become," meaning that He has the ability and power to be and do anything He wants. We are entering into the season of Lent starting our Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday the Feb.10th. Lent is a very special season for me. The spiritual discipline of the season of Lent gives me reassurance and confidence to remind myself that Jesus died for my sins on the cross and I am saved by grace alone (Sola Gratia). I would like share with you a prayer called, Examen of Consciousness developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491–1556) founder of Jesuits. This prayer is about how we can find God in all things. The key to healthy spirituality is to find God in all things and work constantly to gain freedom in our life in order to cooperate with God's will. This prayer is prayed twice daily. Making time for prayer allows us to fully feel God's presence in our lives and enter into a deeper more intimate conversation with God. This will also enable us to discern God's will in our lives. This is a version of the five–step Daily Examen that St. Ignatius practiced and encouraged the brothers to practice daily. 1. Become aware of God's presence. 2. Review the day with gratitude. 3. Jesus Creed "Response Paper" Biblical Theological Seminary LEAD Formation and Mission Jeff Knight 11/26/2012 "Jesus Creed" Response Paper The Jesus Creed has really helped me to look at Scripture from what I believe is a more biblical and Jesus centered perspective. While I have read the words Jesus used from Deuteronomy 6:4–9 and Leviticus 19:18 many times in Scripture, I never considered how all His teachings might have stemmed from them. I did not know Jesus had amended the Shema of Judaism because I didn't know there was a Shema before reading this book, but now knowing this I can more clearly see what Jesus was doing. So we see that the Lord's Prayer is really made up of Love–of–God petitions and Love–of– others petitions, which we see stems from Jesus' Shema. Simply put, the Lord's Prayer is Jesus teaching us to pray the Shema, He radically altered both by redefining love of God and by adding love of others. Until, my parents sent me to a Christian school which wasn't something I agree with. I would always ask myself why did my parents send me to a Christian school instead of a Catholic school. But over the years I was interested in knowing more about the bible and God. I finally decided to be saved back in 2009 when I finally understood the meaning of living for eternity in heaven. Although, I've always had problems with praying because I was afraid of not saying the right words or starting with "Father, thank you for this day." Every time, I was chosen to pray over everyone on the inside I didn't want to forget anything I should pray about. Throughout the years, I learned that our words are powerful not only to others but to God. I decided to work on my prayer time with God since I tend to forget to pray for all the blessings he provides for me every day. Each day I've spend at least fifteen minutes praying to God over all the people I care about trying to not forget or leave out anyone. It has helped me realize the power of prayer which I was afraid about in the past about making a mistake. Now, I can say with confidence that prayer is always the answer when we feel sad, anger or hurt. We find this prayer in Matthew 6 and again in Luke 11. The disciples were being instructed by Jesus. We have in these two books and chapters a record of Jesus ' lessons and more. There is so much in this discussion with Jesus ' disciples many simply overlook or don 't take for the same value as the Lord 's Prayer which itself is within the same chapters. The lessons and advice is very pointed but we seldom get beyond the Lord 's Prayer. Why? It is too obvious. We want what fits our lives but not what goes against our preferred lifestyle, attitudes and way of worship; or secular lives. We repeat the prayer out of habit or in our form of worship but seldom listen to what is being recited. Prayer is defined as personal communication with God. The definition is very broad. What we call "prayer" includes prayers of request for ourselves or for others (sometime called prayers of partition or intercession), confession of sin, adoration, praise and thanksgiving, and also God communicates to us is an indication of his response. Text Background: The Lord's Prayer often refers to as "The Disciple's Prayer's." A timeless masterpiece serves as a model for all prayer and contains all the essential elements of an effective prayer (New Unger's Handbook. Larson. 369). In Jesus's prayers there was the incomparable union of simplicity and depth, serenity, and earnestness in comparison to John. The prayer He prescribes was indeed the preface and prelude that the spirit in all ages of His disciples and Church age will give them a right standing; "as sinners, yet sons; son still, however sinful (Matthew 6:9–13)." The Lord's Prayer begins with "Father in heaven" (Matthew 6:19), a common form of reference to God in ancient Jewish prayer. Within the Old Testament, prophets and poets repeatedly used the imagery of father to refer to God. By identifying God as "Father," the biblical authors recall the facts that we are all God's creation, and as His children, we have a responsibility to obey Him and follow His ... • 36. Analytical Essay: The Legitimacy Of The Prayer In Luke The prayer itself, according to professor Green, has affinities to Jewish tradition, especially to the Qaddish, and the Eighteen Benedictions as the former begins in a manner analogous to Jesus' model prayer. The point here is not to argue the legitimacy of Jesus' prayer recorded in Luke or if it happened for real. But rather to understand why Luke chose to only incorporate this version of the prayer in his text. Professor Green in his commentary on this verse explain that the prayer in Luke "is much concern with the shaping of prayer in relation to an accurate recognition of the one to whom prayer is offered" (Green 446). Jesus taught his disciple to refer to God as "Father" in this prayer and by doing this, "God is presented by Luke as the father who cares for his children and acts redemptively on their behalf". Other version of the gospel in which we see Jesus teaching his disciples to pray are found in other gospel like Matthew 6:9–13 which is somewhat parallels with the prayer in Luke 11:2–4 but with different settings. In Matthew's account, there were more members, and the prayer is more elaborated in language. But, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? What we see happening at the end of this lesson here is Jesus encouraging his disciples to pray, and telling them of the fatherhood of God. They passed the guard and city gates and the angel left his presence. Peter came to the actual reality of knowing it was not a dream. Realizing this he said, "The Lord has sent his angel and saved me from Herod and from what these people had planned to do to me. • 44. Prayer Is An Essential Discipline Of The Christian Faith Introduction Prayer is an essential discipline of the Christian faith. History and cultural differences show us that many people engage in many different ways and techniques to pray and communicate with God. How do you find the right way for you? Summarise your original understanding of the discipline before the course started Having been a Christian for many years I thought that I had a fair knowledge of what it meant to pray. I was amazed and humbled by the idea that through Jesus' restorative act on the cross I am able to come into God's presence – and not only come but be welcomed and even longed for. I believed that prayer is a powerful tool to petition God , a vehicle to praise Him , and an instrument to increase our intimacy with Him . I understood that people pray in a variety of ways, based on the teaching they have received, their experience, and even their personality. Most commonly, I engaged in prayer as a conversation with God. A Significant Christian figure in history who has contributed to this discipline A person who was significant in articulating and exploring conversational prayer with God was a Spanish nun, St Teresa of Avila. She was a prominent teacher of prayer and became a reformer of her Catholic order in the sixteenth century . She is quoted in her book 'The Way of Perfection' as saying, "Speak with Him as with a Father, a Brother, a Lord and a Spouse – sometimes in one way and sometimes in another, He will teach you what you must do to please ... All she could say was, "My brother is dead. My brother is gone." At this moment, I had to stop and think. I was forced to remember that God gives us trials because He loves us. Heavenly Father has a plan for every single one of His children. He has provided a way for us to feel comfort as we remember that we will see my friend's wonderful brother again. During the earlier years of the world, our Father in Heaven provided this miraculous way through the loving sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ. This sacrifice is called the Atonement of Jesus Christ. The Perfect Sacrifice According to Romans 6:23, Adam's transgression would have caused man to forever be separated from God. There needed to be a way to overcome death; a way that could only come about through the "vicarious sacrifice of one who was sinless and who could therefore take upon Himself the sins of all mankind" (Ballard). Blessedly, Jesus Christ courageously sacrificed and created this way for all people. Not only is Jesus Christ a solution to Adam's transgression, but He is the only solution to Adam's transgression. • 48. The Prayer Service Of Fifty Participants Not too long ago, a Catholic lay minister, "John," approached me to discuss a concern he has with his parish's lay evangelization ministry. In addition to their parish's weekly prayer service of fifty participants, this ministry organizes and facilitates a quarterly Catholic Evangelization Congress for their deanery that gathers between three to five hundred people. Consequently, some lay ministers have given greater importance to the major quarterly religious services they organize for their deanery than to their parish's weekly prayer service, going to tremendous lengths to bring renowned speakers that would draw the greatest number of participants. This is frustrating to John because these lay ministers have expressed minimal interest in discovering how to engage many of these participants more effectively. Unfortunately, many of them do not attend the prayer services–and seldom attend the Sunday Mass as well–unless a popular Catholic (ordained) minister is participating. John wonders if the ministry is providing a disservice by ignoring this issue. At the heart of John's concern is the question of who or what do people follow and how. It is an inquiry that relates to a biblical passage found in one of the Gospels. "As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, 'Follow me.' And he got up and followed him." (Mt 9:9) Prior to meeting Jesus, Matthew, also known as Levi, followed the path of fortune. As a tax collector, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Black Friday is often viewed as the epitome of consumerism, but it is actually an example of an extreme, not the typical every day sort of consumerism. In all actuality there are many aspects of consumerism, some beneficial and some harmful to the populace. As humans were created to consume, consumerism and Christianity are compatible, but only in so far as consumerism does not become a fully materialistic pursuit. This is clearly demonstrated largely by biblical standards as will be discussed further on. However, in order to understand how the ideologies of consumerism and Christianity are compatible, one must first understand consumerism. Consumerism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is to the advantage of the consumer or buyer as the competition between businesses will, in time and as time progresses even beyond that, provide better products at lower prices (Wilkens 53). Unfortunately, not every facet of consumerism can be viewed in such a positive light. There are three major negatives tied into consumerism: materialism, lack of contentment, and reductionism. Of the three negatives listed above, materialism is generally the first to manifest itself in daily life. Materialism places greater emphasis on the material, the physical, above all else. Once a person enters into this ideology, he or she will typically begin seeking out items deemed to be greater or suggest higher status (Wilkens 45). This attitude can quickly lead

In Matthew 6, Jesus advocated treasures in heaven over treasures on earth. "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think this means to not worry and to trust in God that your needs will be met, but only if one believes in the Lord. The question of how to spend money could also be connected in Matthew 16 when Jesus spoke about discipleship. Jesus asked of his disciples, "What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life" (Matthew 16:26). I connect this with verses listed earlier, how Jesus preached against materialism and monetary obsession. I think that Jesus is saying a life wasting money is a life wasted. That life is more meaningful when the focus is not on money. I also think the verse of the rich young man could be connected to how Jesus would spend his money. In Matthew 19:21–23, Jesus preached to a rich young man to sell his possessions and give to the poor, and then that young man would no longer be rich on earth but he would be rich in heaven. The young man did not want to sell his possessions, and I think that rich young man is the type of person who would spend money living in excess. The rich young man would spend his money on a concert, which is the complete opposite of what Jesus would do. According to the parables worksheet done in class, the parable of the rich fool is another example of how Jesus instructed us to not live a life focused on money. Luke 12:16–21 is about a life rich in possessions versus a life rich in God. The rich fool built a bigger ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Christ, the Paradigm of Leadership Discussions in what makes effective leaders are ones as long as history itself. It is a topic of constant study and debate where everyone seems to have a view and where definitions of leadership are as varied as their explanations. More recent day definitions and studies have focused on leadership and change, vision building and empowering others. Thus, leaders are people who are able to think and act creatively in non–routine situations – and who set out to influence the actions, beliefs and feelings of others. In this sense being a leader is personal. It flows from an individual's qualities and actions. However, it is also often linked to some other role such as manager or expert. Here there can be a lot of confusion. Not all managers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this regard the shepherd of the Lord's flock leads by modeling godliness and righteousness in his own life and encourages others to follow his example. Deuteronomy 8:3 states: "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord." We as sheep need nourishment to be strong and vibrant Christians. This nourishment comes from one place and one place only–The Holy Bible. The Bible, not the psychology of the world's wisdom, is the only nourishment that can sustain a healthy Christian lifestyle. Serving as our Good Shepherd, Christ will lead us to the most lush pastures and abundant streams. Many Christians throughout history have faced persecution, have had to deal with temptation and have been wounded by spirits that mean to deter us from maximizing our spiritual potential. A shepherd, knowing one of his sheep is ailing, shows compassion and love towards his sheep. The Lord has promised us that he will "bind up the injured and strengthen the weak". (Ezekiel 34:16) As Christians today, we suffer many injuries to our spirits and need compassionate leaders who understand our pain and are willing to listen to our concerns. "Becoming a servant leader requires a great deal of motivation, feedback, and extended practice, as does any worthwhile discipline." We are in need of leaders who will help bear our burden, and sympathize with our unique circumstances. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. New Testament Exegesis New Testament Exegesis – Gospel of Matthew: Concerning Prayer (6:5–14) Introduction Matthew 6:9–13 records the Lord's Prayer in the account of Jesus Christ. Jesus gave this model prayer to his disciples in the Sermon on the Mount (Greenman, 2012: 4). The Lord's Prayer has been central to Christian liturgy and tradition ever since. This essay will first summarise the literary structure and historical context, including authorship and date and location of writing and audience of the gospel of Matthew. Followed by an overview and detailed account of the passage Matthew 6:9–13 before summarising the theological message and application for today's Christians. Literary structure Matthew narrates the story of Jesus. The implied author of the Gospel of Matthew uses all the elements of the narrative to guide the implied reader's response. The entire text is rhetorical (Anderson, 1994: 46). It is clear to scholars such as Gardner that Matthew 'organizes material systematically at the level of literary units and the sections to which they belong' (Gardner, 2013: Kindle Locations 239–242). The basic structure of the text is as follows: the Practice of Prayer (6: 5–15 6: 5–6), the Manner of Prayer (6: 7–13), the Language of Prayer (6: 14–15) and finally Forgiveness and Prayer (Gardner, 2013: Kindle Locations 1843–1844). Of note, Matthew particularly rearranges Mark's material in the earlier chapters of the Gospel, especially through the insertion of the Sermon on the Mount (chaps. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Questions On Expectations Affect Your Experiences Essay Did you know? Expectations affect your experiences in life. Meaning: Your outlook going into a situation will affect your outcome. Example: A child raised in a poor home was always told no when she asks for anything. She 'd ask for new shoes or to go on a trip, but they were too poor. Growing up, she began to dislike the word no and found it nearly impossible to ask anyone for anything. She feared to be told no even when she needed things badly. So she missed out on opportunities to better herself because she expected the same negative results that hurt her so long ago. It wasn 't until much later in life, through the power of Faith in Christ, was she free from this fear and began to change and grow. What looks like a tiny mustard seed has grown into a plant taller than her. A well know saying: FAITH, even as small as a mustard seed, can move mountains. Because in those days, it was nearly impossible to move large amounts of rock and soil. But, look at what we can do today. We move mountains little by little to make way for roads and bridges. Someone had enough FAITH to do it. Matthew 17:20 says: He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you." What situation looks impossible to you? Stupified! Twice in the bible, Jesus marveled and his chin hit the floor in shock at such great FAITH ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Revenge Definition Essay We are told to follow certain rules every day. While we are driving, we are supposed to stop at red lights and stop signs, and not hit other cars or people. At school, you are not supposed to have cell phones, carry blankets, be late to class, or copy someone's homework. Most of these rules tend to become broken through carelessness and forgetfulness. It makes you wonder why it is so hard to follow simple rules in life. Adam and Eve broke the one rule God gave them in the Garden of Eden. They gave into temptation and ate the forbidden fruit. Moses hit the rock twice in the desert, rather than talking to it as God commanded. Jonah was supposed to go to Nineveh and tell the people about their wickedness, but instead tried to runaway. We are told in Romans 12:12 to "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." This is similar to Matthew 6: 5–8, which talks about how and where to pray. "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him." After explaining this, Jesus says the Lord's Prayer and talks about forgiveness. Prayer is very crucial part in your relationship with God. Through prayer, you are able to talk to God and tell him about your fears and struggles. This is why you should be devoted and faithful in prayer. I think it is important to obey the things God tells you to do like loving your enemies, not taking revenge, and being faithful in prayer. It is hard to follow what God tells us to do, because we are only human. We are not perfect and because of that, we struggle everyday with temptation. This is why we need God to help us ... • 65. The Sermon Of The Mount The sermon of the mount is covered in the book of Matthew, which in retrospect was a teaching on the side of a mountain amongst Jesus' disciples. All of the disciples climbed along side of Jesus upon the mountain side, just to accumulate the knowledge in which Jesus lectured about. Some of the things that Jesus address in his teachings where such things as, the fundamentals of becoming a Christian, in addition to the rules of living the Christian life, finally is to know when things aren't as they seem to be in Christianity. The fundamentals of being a Christian, is seemingly simple to some, but for the individuals that are of the world, being a devout Christian is apparently a substantial stride to take in one's life. Case in point, I was once considered of the world, and I found that becoming a Christian wasn't that hard of a step as I had imagined, with the courage and commitment along with Jesus guiding my path, I have continuously walked by faith and not by sight to receive blessings after blessings. Anyone that is wanting to become a Christian, Know that your blessings will start to come in abundance, yet realize that because you're a Christian now, does not mean that you get to take the road which has seen a multitude of journeys, you should know that your Christian test will be much more immeasurable. For example, (Matthew 5:3–4) states that "you're blessed when you're at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule." "You're blessed when ... But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind." (James 1:5–6, ESV) James calls upon the people of God to pray for wisdom. But not to just pray for wisdom, but to do so in faith. James calls the unfaithful man "double–minded" as he is still has not fully trusted in Christ. James also condemns the Jews for praying only for their passions. The world James is fighting against is that of superiority–complexes and careless living. "Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise." (James 5:13, ESV) Christ is the solution to the problem. It is our duty to ask him in time of need and praise him in times of joy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... James warns against the selfishness many have when speaking to God, "You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. You adulterous people! (James 4:3–4, ESV) The sins of the Jewish people were great. Perhaps the greatest was that of zeal towards their passions. James made it a focal point of his book to discuss the importance of prayer, but also the dangers of praying incorrectly. Jesus taught the disciples the way to prayer. We should model all of our prayers after the Lord's Prayer. In that prayer we ask for mercy on ourselves and mercy of our neighbor, as well as our daily needs. • 71. The Prayer Of The Sacred For most religions, the sacred feels as though it is out of reach or untouchable. One typically cannot have a direct conversation with whom they consider sacred, so they pray to their god(s), hoping that their prayers will be heard and answered. Another aspect of following a religion is having a deep feeling of either love, respect or fear for the sacred. No matter the feeling, it is critical for one who follows it to reach out with prayer and tell their sacred how they feel, profess their faith and ask for guidance. Inside sacred texts, there may be scriptures which are "considered privileged and normative for a particular tradition"(Sacred Quest. Cunningham). Scriptures such as "The Lord's Prayer" or the "Shema" follow that definition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Essentially the speaker is again, acknowledging not only the importance of the name of the sacred, but again reiterating that the sacred is so far above the speaker, that they must address that even as they are speaking to him. The next line goes, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is Heaven" (Lord's Prayer. Traditional).. No matter the distance between the sacred and the speaker, they will do the Lords bidding as he says. Next it goes, "Give us this day, our daily bread" (Lord's Prayer. Traditional).. The meaning behind this line is that the speaker is asking the sacred to give them the day and the time and the means to do get through it. It Happened Within A Pray Meeting It Happened in a Pray Meeting In the Comunidad Cristiana Nueva Esperanza (New Hope Christian Community) every Tuesday at 7: 00 PM we met to pray, although sometimes only has been my family and I, (we are the pastoral family). However we have insisted inviting people of the church to come. Initially, perhaps being that, the beginning was further assistance, but the temptation to which we are subjected when we decided to unite to talk to God is much stronger than "normal" (?) and some succumb, the soup opera, tiredness, football game, the child or any other excuse is quite powerful to put forward as a reason for not going. There are still those who used lies to justify his absence when give more weight to fatigue and other things than to talk to God in communion with others. Yet Jesus took their group to retire to pray, Peter, Jacob and John. Is there some value in the pray meeting? People suggest this idea because of their absence of many these meetings. Hey! Many people sing "I like to be in your home celebrating with thy people..." and even jumping and dance in the "spirit" singing this contemporary, anthem. When the younger waiter had left and the bartender came into play, it reminded me of the same scenario that had just played out between the younger waiter and the old man. This time it was the bartender somewhat being the young waiter and the older waiter being the old man. When he said the Lords Prayer replacing words with "nada" he was giving the inclination that no one really gave a damn, and he might as well play out the cards life is dealing him. He also continued to talk about the lighting in the place as if he and the old man felt safe because of it, almost a kind of phobia about the dark. Safe in the shadow of the leaves of the trees, yet he could see everything and everyone around him. At the end when he was going to bed and the sun was coming up he said that he must have insomnia, and made it expectable by believing that a lot of people have it, so nothing was wrong with him. The older waiter and the old man seem to both be suffering from depression, however, the older man was in a far more advanced state of the problem. The older waiter could see that his life of loneliness would eventually perpetuate into what he had experience that night during his visit with the other waiter and how the old man had been treated.
