The Pony Express Three men in the mid–1800s had an idea to open up a mail delivery system that reached from the midwest all the way from California
. (Russell, William) The lack of speedy communication between the midwest and the west. The Pony Express employed about eight hundred to five
hundred to carry these riders from one post to the next. ( Monthly pay for these riders was fifty dollars, which were good wages at the time. Although
this method of carrying mail was dangerous and difficult. In reference to, the Carrying Method mail was dangerous and difficult, but was made for one
destination. The founders of Pony Express line found that they were bankrupt.Even though the pony express company was no longer operating, its logo
lived on when wells fargo purchased it and used it from 1866 until 1890 in their fright and stagecoach. Nineteen months after launching the pony
express it was replaced by the biggest telegraph line ever. Everyone that rode a horse avoided the heavy snow. Pony Bob Halsam was the holder of
the record for the longest and fastest run in history on the celebrated run in may 1860,began at friday's station on the southwest shore of the lake
tahoe and took the route to buckland's station. Having ridden some 190 miles Halsam in the essence turned around and went right back, this time
replacing a rider who did not show up and Indians came along the way. In the end he traveled about 360 miles (580) km in 40 hours. However,

The Rock Johnson Research Paper
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was born on May 2, 1972 in Hayward, California. He is strongly known for being a
WWE wrestler, and an actor for the famous series The Fast and the Furious and many more. I believe that he is a successful man because he came
from having absolutely nothing to making millions. A lot of people aren't very motivated to actually make a change in their life, but he didn't give up
on himself. That is why I strongly believe that he is successful; however, he's not only successful by being rich. For example, how many people do
you know that actually are determined to make a change in their lifestyle ? I believe 20 out of every 100th person actually accomplish their
determination of changing their lifestyle. That is what most inspires me and attracts my eye about... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He probably had to plan exactly what he was gonna do to try to turn his life around. Next, he probably had to see what obstacles he might face
while trying to achieve his goal. For example, going to college is not free, so he had to get a job to try to buy the items that he needed or wanted.
Therefore, he had to work around his schedule with school and work since he was involved in sports too Then, the next thing he probably had to
do is decide on what he wanted to major in college. However, in his case he had to decide to either focus more in wrestling or acting. Johnson
probably had to decide what benefitted him more between both options. Also, he had to realize what he loved, enjoyed, and was more passionate at
doing. Not only did he had to focus on that, but he also had to focus on what would benefit his health later on in the future. Unless, if he evened it out
between both careers and focused on one career for as many years as he wanted, and then changed to the other whenever he wanted and as long as he

Analyzing The Film 'Gladiator'
My film I watched was Gladiator. It was an action movie as opposed to a documentary about war. It was based in Rome in the early times.
In the movie, the emperor of Rome was Marcus Aurelius. He was a very victorious general. After his death he wanted Maximus to take the throne,
and he wasn't even his son. Aurelius's son was very power hungry and wanted to rule. His plan was to rule Rome and take the throne. He wanted to
murder the last ruler Marcus Aurelius and then execute Maximus, which was the new emperor after so then he would be next in line. Maximus then
escaped the execution but was then sold into slavery. From there he was forced into being a gladiator. He was trained by Proximo. Later they were sent
off to Rome to perform a lot of

'Cigarettes In The Insider'
The movie "The Insider" is a fantastic movie about the fight against the Brown Williamson tobacco company and the "60 Minutes" article that shined
the light to the public that the tobacco companies were lying to the public about their product so that they could sell more products knowing that the
health risks are high. When referring to tobacco in this paper I am talking about cigarettes, one of the most dangerous ways of getting tobacco due to a
chemical compound called nicotine, the ingredient that causes addiction and what got the general public hooked. There were two men in this movie
that made it their mission to throw the tobacco companies under the bus and giving the public the correct information to the cigarettes they all chose to
buy. Those men were Lowell Bergman, star producer of the TV show "60 Minutes", who has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

while blindfolded it's safe to assume that he usually get what he wants, but what he says isn't good enough for Lowell Bergman. Lowell straight up
tells Sheik in front of all the guards that 60 minutes doesn't run that way and this is how it's really going to be done. Lowell is a very strong headed
man and doesn't take no for an answer, he knows that he is one of the most powerful voices in modern media and fights for what he wants. During
the interview with Sheik Lowell and Mike got into several arguments with the guards from what questions that Mike was allowed to ask to how close
Mike was able to sit to Sheik. The combination of the two want things done a certain way and at this point will fight to the death for what they

Gladiator, by Ridley Scott
Who doesn't love a movie where the protagonist is off on a quest for revenge in numerous action sequences for his taste of sweet, sweet revenge?
When breaking films into this type of category, one film that stands out among the rest has to be Gladiator. Gladiator can be argued as one of the
greatest action movies of all time, and for good reasons. The soundtrack, dialogue, and characters have no equal in the revenge action category of film,
and can be considered tops of pure action films. Gladiator is a perfectly well rounded movie that adds the best of all worlds to create the masterpiece
seen today. Ridley Scott's masterpiece, Gladiator, was released to the public in 2000. Received with initial success and regarded as one of the best ...

The soundtrack has received critical acclaim from numerous reviews and was a best seller, selling millions of copies of the soundtrack alone to
anxious listeners. The songs helped set the pace of the movie and made a good movie into an excellent movie. Some of the favorite songs from the
soundtrack include "The Battle," "Elysium," and the favorite "Now We Are Free." Mixing a combination of soft melodies and ballads, with battle
waltzes, the soundtrack covered all ground and provides future composers the groundwork for future war epics. While Hans Zimmer gets most of the
credit and praise for Gladiator's score, he could not do it alone without Lisa Gerrard, who co–composed the score and provided the vocals. This
soundtrack was so well received that it was nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award for best score, and won a Golden Globe for
best original score. Compared to other action films, Gladiator is hard to top. As a reviewer of the soundtrack, Roko Zaper, said Gladiator, "By the
very nature of the film itself, the score to Gladiator is perhaps hard to grasp for some, but in it Zimmer and Gerrard have created a score that
transgresses its genre and brings the music into an unforgettable arena, an Elysium of drama if you will." As Zaper said, Gladiator separates and goes
past any other action soundtrack. Gladiator's soundtrack

Essay about Humour within the Play Educating Rita
Humour within the Play Educating Rita
Educating Rita has survived as a popular play in production because
Willy Russell successfully combines humour with serious themes.
Educating Rita, a play written in 1979, and by 1983 the fourth most popular play in Britain, remains a favourite of the British today.
Based partly on his own experiences, Willy Russell created a theatrical masterpiece, remarkably with only two characters. So we ask ourselves the
question: how did he accomplish this? I will explore just how the play has survived in current British culture, with hundreds of plays being written
every year, yet still remaining a favourite of students, grandparents, and critics alike.
I will first explore the humour within the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are also simple play on words between Frank and Rita:
Frank: "Do you know Yeats?"
Rita: "The wine Lodge?"
Frank: "No. The poet."
These small jokes all contribute to the overall authentic comedy within the play.
There is also situational humour within the play. An example of this is when Frank attempts to help Rita learn to write good criticising literary essays,
yet she has written an appreciative essay on
"Rubyfruit Jungle," an erotic book that would never even be considered to be included on an English course. Frank's attempt to make Rita understand
is completely wasted upon her at this moment in time, but is funny and keeps the audience interested to see if Rita will ever appreciate "Good literature."
These comedic situations, juxtaposed with the more seriously natured ones, such as when Rita's flatmate attempts suicide, work well.
I will now explore the serious themes, and how they contribute to the play. I believe the main and most important theme of the play is social divide.
Rita is from an underprivileged background, where she feels trapped by the restraints it brings her. She wishes to "Find herself," and she plans to do
this through English literature. Rita is unhappy, and will not feel fulfilled unless she does something with her life. This is touching, and would be

Westward Expansionsion During The Westward Expansion
Westward Expansion During the westward expansion many important events happened. The Pony express was one of them it was a mail delivery
system. Another very important event was the Transcontinental railroad, it was the first train track ever made! Both of these events were very
hard to accomplish but we did accomplish them so that was good. Pony Express The Pony express was a mail delivery system, that started in
April, 1860 and used a team of a person and a horse to deliver mail to people. People that wanted mail delivered to someone could put their mail in a
little cubby and a mailman would come pick it up and deliver it to the place the person wanted it to be delivered to. The process of delivering mail
on the Pony express took about 10 days. Although, it was much faster than any other way of delivering mail. Traveling The mailmen had to travel
2,000 miles through St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California, just to deliver mail! Some people died while they were traveling but some
people survived. The mailmen had a lot on their hands, because they had to make sure the mail they had was being delivered to the right place, also
they had to face the challenge of going across 3 states on horseback. One of the hardest things they had to do was sleep outside and fight wild
animals.Even though traveling might have been hard, the mailmen got through it, and today we as the people appreciate that.

Watching What W Say
"Watching What We Say" Over the course of the semester we discussed many different theories on epistemology. Our focus was to try to understand
if we can claim true knowledge from the things we think we know, and how we come to know them. Experience seems to be the major factor that
plays a role in the way we come to know things. According to contextualists, language, more so the context in which it is used, also plays a role in the
way establish knowledge. In this paper we will focus on two contextual theorists, Ludwig Wittgenstein and David Lewis. We will discuss their theories
and few skepticisms about their theories. A major contextualist claim is that our attributions of knowledge can vary from person to person based on the
user's context. The way we utter sentences, the many different contexts in which we use the words to form statements, may differ in truth value as
well. According to an online article in the Stanford Encyclopedia, Patrick Rysiew describes contextualism as "entertaining of the possibility of some
kind of pluralism concerning epistemic standards. In one instance, this took the form of the claim, in response to skepticism, that there are "two senses
of 'know'"–one 'strong' or 'philosophical', the other 'weak' or 'ordinary'. So too, some of Wittgenstein's claims about the relation between meaning and
use and the multiplicity of "language games", each with its own set of norms, opened the way for a more thoroughgoing kind of semantic pluralism with

Russel Conwell Acres of Diamonds
According to Russell Conwell's speech "Acres of Diamonds," wealth is accessible to you no matter who or where you are. The term acres of
diamonds doesn't literally refer to acres of diamonds, but is a metaphor used to express the belief that opportunities are endless if you just use your
resources. You should also be reasonably ambitious to attain your goals. Aman's ambition to attain wealth helps to make him a good man. Opportunities
surround us in our everyday lives. It's just a matter of being honest, trustworthy, and hard working. Conwell says "Now then, I say again that the

In the two previously mentioned stories, the mens love for money was what compelled them to sell their posessions and go in search for their fortunes.
These men wanted the money for themselves, not for the good of the world, and in the end, faced their demise.
Despite Conwells experiences, his audience repeatedly tried to prove him wrong and noted how awful it was that a Christian minister prefered to
advise people to get rich rather than to preach the gospel. But Conwell believed that to make money honestly was to preach the gospel and to be
poor was wrong. What the people did not understand was that a wealthy person can also be a pious person. Conwell tells the people that they should
have money and it is their Christian and godly duty to do so. To be pious is to be carful of the duties owed by created beings to God; devout, godly,

The Problems Of Philosophy By Bertrand Russell, Ayn Rand,...
While the use and understanding of philosophy goes widely unknown by a majority of the population today, a selective few have recognized its
potential and utilized it to its fullest. In the following essay, three prominent philosophers; Bertrand Russell, Ayn Rand, and Christopher Hitchens. Each
gives their insight to three important topics; the value of philosophy, using philosophy and its value, and the importance of freedom of speech. All of
whom will be discussed, and agreement or disagreement will also be concluded and supported.

While it is clear that Bertrand Russell wished for the continuation of the practice of philosophy, he acknowledges most people have no idea what
philosophy is, outside of the idea of a group of people thinking about life. With this writing while giving some of the products that have come from
philosophy, he also warns that not all answers can be gained from the philosophy. While definite answers can be gained through the sciences,
philosophic study only raises more uncertainty.
Bertrand Russell supports his arguments with insight that comes from teaching, practicing, and seeing the effects of philosophy both within himself
and the people around him. While studying philosophy Russell will only intensify the uncertainty about the world around us and the inner workings of
our mind. Likewise in support of Russell's argument, the study of sciences that is aforementioned such as; Phycology, Astronomy, and Physics which
were originally pondered by philosophers has moved from philosophical theory to scientific study.
Likewise with the pursuit and study of philosophy, the likelihood of the student holding on to the dogmatism, and predigests that is set forth by society
and past experiences. Along with this the aforementioned Practical Man Russell supports his argument with a description, " The practical man who
recognizes only material needs, who realizes men must have food for the body, but is

Should The Movie Gladiator Be Considered An Aristotle Tragedy
The movie Gladiator would be considered an Aristotle tragedy. The main character, a Roman General, Maximus, is a loyal soldier. Maximus, is the
favoured of Caesars Generals, and asked to be his successor, Caesar. Maximus, himself, is a good general caring for his men as well relatable.
Maximus is a loving father and husband, who fight to protect his family and country. Maximus, who is asked to be the next Caesar, does not reply with
the answer Caesar hoped, but thought about. At this time Commodus, Caesars son, is told about his father's choice and murders him. In doing this
Commodus, takes control of Rome's armies and Rome itself. Maximus's first error is not answering Caesar when they spoke about his offer. Briefly

The Sweet Hereafter and "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" Essay
"The Sweet Hereafter and the Pied Piper"
A tragic event can occur in no longer than a moment and produce a domino effect that can change everything in your life. The book "The Sweet
Hereafter" by Russell Banks contains such an event. This book has a modernized undertone of the folk tale "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" by Robert
Browning. This tale is carried throughout the books entirety. Both of these stories show connections in many ways and almost parallel one another in
their basic plot of showing the painful effects disaster can have on a small town. While the people of Hamlin had the Piper to directly blame for their
miseries, the people of Sam Dent did not.
Both stories are based on the loss of the children in a small ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the end of the book "The Sweet Hereafter" one of the only children left to survive the accident is a young girl named Nicole Burnell. Though she
escapes narrowly with her life she is crippled and confined to a wheelchair thereafter. Her dreams of becoming a beauty queen or a rock star are
dashed. Similarly in the tale of "The Pied Piper" the town is left with only one child who is crippled and thus was unable to keep up with the rest of
the children as they followed the Piper into the cave dancing in an enchanted trance.
In both stories we later learn that these characters whom are left behind almost wish they had not been spared. The crippled boy from "The Pied
Piper" is in fact said to be sad at not being able to share "all the pleasant sights" that he believes his playmates are seeing in a heaven–like land
described to them by the Piper himself. In the time immediately following the accident Nicole Burnell could be described as having these similar
feelings. In reality both of these characters disabilities ended up saving them. In the case of the crippled boy his lameness kept him from being taken
away forever by the Piper, like all the other children. In the case of Nicole Burnell her gained disability gave her control and power over the
incestuous situation she was in with her own father, it saved her from further sexual abuse.

Ragged Dick Essay
Success is something everyone strives for in life, and the basis of what is needed to gain it has been relatively the same since the 1860s. The
means needed to acquire what is needed for success although, were not quite as easy as they are in comparison to today. In 1867, there was a
young boy, around 12 years old, named Ragged Dick. He was an orphan who stole and slept in the streets, and also a bootblack, which is someone
who shines shoes for a living. In the book Ragged Dick, the author explained, "He would not steal, or cheat, or impose on younger boys, but was frank
and straight–forward, manly and self–reliant." Though he had a rugged upbringing, he had the means for being a successful man. He met a boy named

crops, but the grasshoppers ate whatever survived the drought. This left no crops for the southerners to eat, making their living extremely hard with
little food to live off of. This was not the only type of insect that made their lives harder, they also faced blood eating insects. Barns also wrote
"Bugs", which also appeared in The Sod House, she wrote that, "In moving into all kinds of houses we find all kinds of insects that prey upon human
blood." The southerners moved in search of better crops but only ran into more insects. These bugs made their houses no longer safe to live in but
they had no other options. They killed hundreds but there were always more that came to feed off of them, only contributing to the daily difficulties

Analysis of Bertrand RussellВґs The Problems of Philosphy...

1)
The philosopher Bertrand Russell in his work, "The Problems of Philosophy," comes to some conclusions of the truth of objects in our world. Through
questioning certain ideas and problems in our world, he breaks down what can know what really exists in the world and what does not. Russell, an
empiricist, believes that through our sensory perception of our environment. However, our own individual perception can be skewed, and therefore
is susceptible to err. Russell gives an example of three people, one is color blind, one is sick, and one is inebriated sick, and one is inebriated, and
ask them to describe the same chair, they will all give you slightly different answers. Then if you take that chair and put it behind a ... Show more

This consistency proposes to Russell, that we, at least, must have faith in the reality of a single, specific, real chair. To this commonsensible
belief, he also goes on to propose the idea that real objects cause the sense data we intake, so therefore must be related to them in a certain
noteworthy way. So from this what can we believe and not believe to exist? Well first of all we can believe that, if we are looking at the chair, we
can conclude the object itself is real, there is a chair there. Our senses take in the sense data of a chair, four legs, a back rest, etc. We then take this
data and use our prior knowledge of other chair like things, and we can come to the solution of the object we are looking at is a chair. This logic
applies to all objects in such a manner. However we cannot truly believe that certain things truly exists. Such as the fact that we cannot truly believe
the existence of certain characteristics of an objects when it's subject outside influence, such as a chair in water. To the naked eye, the chair would
look distorted, but it is not so, the water distorts our perception of the chair, therefore deceiving our view of the reality of the characteristics of the
chair. In conclusion, Russell gives us an answer to the question, if our senses can be easily deceived and tricked into perceiving and reality that is
false, how can we believe it

Analysis Of ' Acres Of Diamonds '
Isaac Newton's third law states that "To every action there is always opposed an equal reaction." Not only can this statement be applied to the
sciences, but also to how we behave on a daily basis. Russel Conwell's claim in his speech "Acres of Diamonds" that poor people make themselves
poor and rich people make themselves rich defends the belief that we are responsible for our own success. This means that even if you come from an
impoverished background you can change your situation for the better and fulfill your potential by leading a "rich" life. I agree with Conwell's
proposition that you are in charge of your own destiny. When you look at his speech and Temple current six commitments upheld by Richard M.
Englert, the university's president, you can find many connections. But along with these similarities, there are also points that have changed and
evolved to suit the needs of the current student. As we break down the six commitments, it is clear that the founder's initial desires and the present day
goals of the university are brought together to create Temple's mission statement. The first commitment made by the university is its devotion to its
students in serving their financial needs. Every graduate of a university has to struggle with dealing with debt and paying off student loans. The fear of
being in debt and the intimidation of the sticker price of higher education stops many people from seeking out a degree. This problem affects students
today but was also

The Pony Express
In 1860, a mail carrying service called Central Overland California and Pike 's Peak Express Company, although notorious as The Pony
Express, was established by three business partners. It was a relay race on horses from station to station, carrying mail bags as they went. Being a
dangerous job, it required the bravest and most experienced riders they could find. The founding of The Pony Express was a useful resource in
delivering mail regardless of the struggles the riders faced, such as, Indians, weather conditions, and uncomfortable and dangerous terrain. Even though
this was a short–lived creation, soon to be replaced by the Pacific Telegraph Line which provided faster communication, it was a brave, worthy, and
effective effort. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether anyone ever knew who originated the idea to bring this service to America is anyone 's guess, and simply remains as a matter of personal
opinion. "However, it was William H.Russell, and U.S. Senator William Gwen who actually discussed and put The Pony
Express into operation" (The Founders n.d.).
Three business partners named William B. Waddell,Alexander Majors, and William H. Russell are the founders of The Pony Express.
"Personable, sophisticated, and politically astute, Russell went to Washington, D.C., to represent Russell, Majors and Waddell in the complex world of
national politics. Majors, who was at home on the prairie and knew how to handle horses, oxen, heavy wagons, and unruly crews, managed the
operation on the open range. The low–key, practical Waddell oversaw purchasing, hiring, payroll, and bookkeeping from the home office, which moved
from Leavenworth, Kansas (where the company had been headquartered since 1855), to St. Joseph, Missouri, the eastern starting point for the Pony
Express" (Di Certo n.d.). And though the start of this service would be a grand success, the Indians, amongst other things as well, became a great
struggle.
The Indians attacked because they felt, well, threatened. They felt that the United States had overstepped their bounds, literally. Americans were
coming and chopping down trees, trespassing on what the Indians claimed to be their territory and homeland. Many buffalo were killed by

The Deplection Of Bertrand Russel's Reflection On Worldview
Worldview Reflection paper Philosophy is all about knowledge and the comprehension of existence. It tries to answer many questions about our
reality. In fact, lots of philosophers, or as some are called, Humanists, wants to understand the purpose of life and so, the human's status. In this
essay, it will be discussed how Worldviews can have many aspects and how interpretations of life might be different from a person to another. In fact,
Bertrand Russel's worldview will be explained, as well as my worldview and how those two might or might not be similar. As a starting point, Russel
believes a lot in human's freedom (Norman, 5). He thought that everyone should have a free will, do their own choices and use their intellectual
capacities as way of showing their "Human dignity" (Norman, 5). Moreover, he is recognized as a secular humanist, which means that he does not
believe in religion. He thinks that humans should create a great environment of living not for God, but for themselves (Norman, 5). Finally, Bertrand
Russel does believe in sciences, in fact "Russel's description of reality is a mathematical, logical structure given to us in circumscribed doses
according to our subject positions" (Briggs, 7). Briefly, he thinks that everything has a scientific explanation which is one of the reasons he does not
believe in any religious explanations of the universe and have an atheistic worldview.
In addition, I would describe myself as a pacifist which is the belief that anything can be done without violence and with equality. As a child, I
used to play football with my three brothers and our friends (which were all guys except me). Since I was the only girl, I really had difficulties to
be accepted or picked up in a team, and each time was a real fight for my rights to play with them. This is why today I cannot accept inequalities
between sexes and I do not hesitate to take part of a conflict in which girls are not considered equal. Furthermore, I always had animals around me
during my childhood so when I found an abandoned cat in the street two years ago, I did not hesitate to take her with me and pay for the vaccines or
other necessary treatments so I could keep her. Also, I always was an artistic child

Definition Essay – Defining Reality
The distinction that causes the most trouble in philosophy is the distinction between "appearance" and "reality," between what things seem to be and
what they are. The painter wants to know what things seem to be, the practical man and the philosopher want to know what they are. . . . but if reality
is not what appears, have we any means of knowing whether there is any reality at all? – Bertrand Russell, The Problems of Philosophy
In everyday life people distinguish between the real size of the sun and the size it appears to be, between the natural components of a cloud (a
concentration of water droplets) and what the cloud seems to be (some fleecy substance?), and so on. However, when ... Show more content on

Does the universe exist as humans know and describe it, or is the universe just a false reality in which nothing really exists at all?
This is all based on the presuppositions of knowledge, those "philosophical principles that lie at the foundations of virtually all of our knowledge and
beliefs." Without them, we could believe nothing, know nothing, and think nothing else. The presupposition that the universe even exists is the
fundamental belief that breathes air into the lungs of science. Although most people choose not to question the existence of themselves and the
universe around them, the status of such principles is just as much in question as the status of any big philosophical questions. No matter how obvious
the answers may seem to be, existence of any entity, physical or otherwise, is very difficult to prove, and by most popular standards, impossible.
I believe, however, that existence is not provable through reason based on experience, but by that very experience. While many great [and amateur]
philosophers argue that the life in its natural state is based on God, or science, or any of a great number of other things, I argue that life is merely
based on consciousness. There is no proof of one's own existence but one's own consciousness, that very awareness of your being. Whether it is a false
awareness or not is no matter. It is that

Cinderella Man American Dream
"Forget all the reasons it won 't work and believe the one reason that it will." Unknown. This quote from an unknown author perfectly addresses what I
believe a critical step for attaining the American Dream is. To focus on the reasons someone cannot achieve something will only lead to disaster, but
when someone takes the one reason why they can succeed, they do. There is no better representation of this and the American Dream than the movie
Cinderella Man. It shows that no matter how bad things are, no matter how many reasons there are to lose faith in yourself, those who believe can
overcome any adversities and find the "American Dream."

and determination for the people of America. He not only won the title of world champion, but lived the American Dream at a time where the country
was at its darkest.
This is in essence the purest form of the American Dream that I've seen. It's an idea that no matter how terrible life is, if you have the willpower
and hope, anything can be achieved. This is what the American Dream truly is to me. While it may be true that the way the American Dream is
embodied changes through generations, i.e. the fight to be acknowledged in October Sky, the essence is still the same. The American Dream is to
be able to live, work, thrive, and be whatever you set your mind to. This essence of the American Dream is everything to me because just a few short
months ago the concept of the American Dream meant nothing to me. It was just a thing my mother talked about at dinner, or a fable that seemed to
irrelevant to notice, but that all changed when I opened my eyes to the real meaning behind it all. It made me feel like there was a purpose to the
chaos, it made it all feel real.
This is especially attributed to Cinderella man, as it showed just how important the American Dream is, but it showed just how powerful it could be as
well. In Cinderella Man,

Steven Spielberg's Jaws and Ridley Scott's Gladiator Essay
Steven Spielberg's Jaws and Ridley Scott's Gladiator The two films being examined are the thriller Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg, and the
action film Gladiator directed by Ridley Scott. Both directors create epic films; the films are momentous and are designed to manipulate the
emotions. A thriller is intended to appeal to basic human instinct to the need of feeling fear and survival. Action movies are designed to appeal to our
sense of danger: pace and experience is something we want but don't have in our everyday lives to this extent. Both films are examples of media,
which manage to induce you into a certain way of thinking: Jaws into being scared and Gladiator into sympathising and rooting... Show more content on

When the Barbarians enter the scene they all appear uncivilised and disorganizes in comparison: the fact they behead the messenger reinforces
this. When the battle begins, the camera flicks around at a frenetic pace, showing the chaos of battle. As Maximus enters on a horse, the light is
streaming through the trees making him appear a hero, a ray of hope in the dark. As he begins mercilessly killing Germanians the director
manipulates the audience into condoning the slaughter, and what is more, willing him to kill further lending credibility to his role. In Jaws, the
shot opens on the beach with the campfire at night. It's a familiar setting; the teenagers are all stereotypically middle class 'college kids', very warm
and relaxed. The director designed the scene to provoke a recognizable combination to the audience, to convey how normal and plausible it is. When
the female and male leave the group the group, the colours change; the scene becomes dark and the characters become silhouetted against the
moonlight. The silence is emphasised by the sound of the waves and the bell. The atmosphere is eerie and indefinite: the sea is calm. The female
actress is silhouetted as she swims. Her friend has passed out at this point, obviously beyond giving any help, which increases the sense of her
isolation and vulnerability. As the camera closes in for a close up

The Gladiator Trailer Essay
In the summer of 2000 a box office hit was released. "Gladiator" was a brilliant action film set in Ancient Rome, which appealed to over 15s from
both genders. The film was hugely successful and raked in over $190,000,000 in the U.S box–office and $434,000,000 worldwide. However the film
wouldn't have been nearly as successful as it was without the help of an exciting and gripping trailer to appeal to the target audience. Trailers are very
important in the film industry because it's the one chance film–makers have to attract their target audience. They try to choose clips which will appeal
to their target audience and also makes the film–makers trailer more distinctive by including unique selling points (USPs). In this essay I'm... Show

Some examples are white sand on the coliseum floor, gold and brown coliseum walls, and red rose petals falling around Maximus. Without this use of
colour change the audience would find it more difficult to tell that the hero experienced a radical journey from a general to a slave to a gladiator, then a
hero. As the trailer begins, slow images combined with Written Words are used to give the target audience time to familiarise themselves with the story
of Maximus. For example the first few shots are of Russell Crowe as a general, then a slave, then a gladiator. This makes it clear to the audience who
the main character is and helps to set the scene. Then the images start to become faster and more exciting. This is achieved by using rapid cuts which
increases the viewer's excitement. For example the viewer now sees images of sword fights, fierce tigers and overturned chariots. A shot of a chariot
overturning and the image of a horse jumping through flames have also been included, but slowed down because they are exciting stunts and the
director doesn't want the audience to miss them. Also by encapsulating a shot of Commodus screaming at his sister the audience can tell that the film
will be dramatic. By making the scenes faster and more violent, the director has gripped the audience so they will go and see the film. Another
important element of the trailer is the sound. Throughout the trailer tense, exciting music is played to draw the

Short Summary : ' The Shark '
Steven Coward Mr. Bergmann Senior English P4 21 September 2015 Long ago in ancient Greece there was a baby boy whose family was cast
into exile. They were cast adrift into the ocean to fall off the edge of the earth. The parents were starving and their baby wouldn't stop crying and
whining, because it was hungry. So one day the parents tossed the baby out of the boat so that they would have more to eat. The only thing that
they didn't know was that a nearby shark was watching and waiting. Perturbed by what the parents had done the shark took the baby as part of his
pack. The shark then took the baby away from the parents and hid him in an underwater cave, sectioned off from the sea. The shark then went
back to the boat and began to make it rock. Frighten the parents went to see what was causing the boat to shake, but when they looked over the
edge of the boat the sharked jumped out of the water and chomped the mother's head off . He then jumped on the boat and started biting and eating
the father he started with the dads' feet and he slowly worked his way up his body wanting the man to suffer as much as possible for what he had
done to his child, but once the shark was up to his waist he stopped, so that the dad would have to see his mangled body until he died. The shark then
jumped back into the water and swam to the cave. Once he arrived he heard the baby crying and he figured that he missed his parents, so the shark
then became like a mother and a father to the child,

Value of Philosophy Essay
Philosophy is the study of examining and thinking about questionable ethical problems and/or generally accepted certainties. Philosophy aims at
knowledge that combines a variety of academic fields as well as convictions, prejudices and beliefs.
What is Russell's essay about? Present Russell's position in your own words.
Bertrand Russell's essay addresses many issues concerning philosophy. In the writing, he states philosophy's nature, value, and criticisms. The essay
explains these aspects of the study of philosophy in relatively different ways. The main idea for establishing value in his essay is by explaining how it
is best obtained, and its effect on other people. The essay continues with his criticisms of those who opposed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It states that even though philosophy doesn't give us a certainty of true answers, it suggests many possibilities which enlarge our thoughts and free
them from tyranny of custom. He also supports the idea that philosophy is beneficial because it "enriches intellectual imagination". The essay brings
up the points of the practical man, and why they are at a loss of intellectual imagination because they don't explore the unknown by viewing life as
simple. As evidence, he uses an example of mass disease and poverty of a society. Thetheory is that in those conditions, there would still be much to
be improved to produce a valuable society. Even if the society has the proper food supplies, they need the 'goods of the mind' (knowledge) to build a
well–governed society. He believes practical men undermine that aspect, thereby explaining their lack of intellectual imagination. The next argument
is that philosophy saves us from convictions, prejudices, and cultural beliefs. The affect that that has on a person is to open up a fresh prospective
with very little bias. He believed for this to be beneficial to people socially, by developing empathy which helps you understand others points of view.
That theory goes hand–in–hand and gives a fine segway to his fourth and final argument of "the freedom and equity learned from philosophical
contemplation reflecting in your personality (action and emotion). The

There is knowledge to be gained through philosophy, even for the computer science student. When I first learned that this was a required course for
my degree curriculum, I did not believe I would find value in taking the course. Now I am going to present my evaluation of why I have changed my
mind. What is the definition of philosophy? The dictionary would define it as "the study of the basic ideas about knowledge, truth, right and wrong,
religion, and the nature and meaning of life". My first response was "truth, right and wrong, religion, meaning of life", how can that help a computer
science student? The idea of gaining knowledge through the discipline of philosophy seemed foreign to me. What I learned was that my original ...

The historian would be able to go on for hours churning out historical facts. If you were to ask the same question of philosophers, they would have to
admit that their studies have obtained positive along with negative results. The reason for this is that as soon as any knowledge about a subject gets
definite, it turns into its own science, and is no longer called philosophy. (Bertrand Russell p21 Book). I agree with Russell that the questions that
philosophers try to answer are a part of what drives ambiguity in philosophy. Russell states that philosophy is not just about recommending answers
to questions, additionally it is to make sure that people are aware of the questions coupled with the importance of each of those questions. Questions
he posed like, "is consciousness a permanent part of the universe giving hope to indefinite growth in wisdom and the questions of good and evil" are
valid questions that should be applied to all disciplines. Being employed in the field of computer science feels like there is indefinite growth with
what we are watching being designed today, at the same time we shouldn't overlook the morality in the things we create. I would agree with Russell's
conclusion that we need to study the questions. Before I took Introduction to Philosophy, if you were to ask me any of the questions Russell mentions
above I would have had no comment or opinion on any of them. I never thought about them before. I

Before any filming or acting is shown, there are blocks of writing. It shows historical evidence that some research has been done. It also explains
important facts about the battle and puts things into context. The writing is in short blocks to make the audience read it. If it was just one continual
piece of writing, then many people wouldn't bother.
One of the first shots is a close up of Maximus' hand. It has a ring on it, which means he is married. In the background there are children laughing,
which could show that he is also a family man. The woodwind instruments create a calming atmosphere that match the autumn colours used in the shot.
When the shot changes severely to cold and dark colours, it proves that he was only dreaming of his family before going to battle.
We then cut to a close up of the hero that shows his face and emotions. The close up is needed so that the detail can be seen clearly, especially in his

Analysis Of On Laziness By Christopher Morely
"On Laziness" by Christopher Morely is an essay on laziness. He claims there are benefits to laziness and that most wise, experienced people are,
in fact, lazy. Morley's purpose is to glorify lazy people and persuade people to believe that they can be successful because he lists examples of
smart lazy people and he uses many examples in which laziness is helpful and the opposite is destructive to support his cause. Christopher Morely
used examples of lazy successful people to make his point. "Doctor Johnson, who was one of the world's great philosophers, was lazy." This
exemplifies how he uses lackadaisical intellectuals to support his cause. By using these individuals he uses ethos to persuade the audience to believe
that to be successful, one must be, to some degree, lazy. To support his claim that Doctor Johnson was lazy, he quotes a leather

His individuality and strong presence was what attracted her to him. When recounting how Praksash wanted her to call him by his first name,

Prakash and how she is after she marrieshim. Prakash also insists on calling Jyoti, Jasmine. Prakash plays an important role in Jasmine's life
because he is the first person who helped Jasmine become more conscious of the modern world and the opportunities it holds. Prakash is a modern

appearence and reality Essay
Appearance and Reality
In Chapter One Bertrand Russell basically wants to know the true meaning of "reality". The truth is that "reality" can never truly be determined. I
say this because there is a difference between believing and actually knowing. For example I know the desk in the front of the classroom is real. I
know this because all of my senses concur. Now when I try to determine to color, the texture or even the shape of the desk I will run into a problem.
Just as the example given in the text, the tables color may look difference according to the amount of light that is on it. If the amount of light is
changed the shade of the color will also change, therefore making ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How can we truly know the feeling, or taste, or sound, or anything of any given object. If you touch something how do you know you felt it with
enough force? If you taste something how do you know you tasted enough of it? When you hear something how do you know if you heard right?
Another thing that Bertrand Russell speaks of is illusion. An illusion is an erroneous perception of reality. This is when the mind plays tricks. An
example is our dreams. When we awake we sometimes aren't sure if what had just happened was a dream or in fact a real occurrence. Another
example which everyone is familiar with is an optical illusion. When you see something from a distance and its appearance can be obscure. The
closer you find yourself to the obscurity, the less obscure it seems. If there is a something miles away from you in the distance, your eyes tell you that
there is nothing more than a mere dot. As the "dot" comes closer you eventually realize that it was not a dot, but was actually something different all
together. Once again it is nearly impossible to determine the "truth". All of our senses combined must agree upon the final result.
In conclusion it is hard to determine what is "real" and what is not. Even when consulting all of our senses what is "real" can still be questioned. How
do I as my own person know that my senses concur with someone else's senses? One's senses are determined by the person using

Essay on Alfred North Whitehead and John Dewey
"The correlate in thinking of facts, data, knowledge, already acquired, is suggestions, inferences, conjectured meanings, suppositions, tentative
explanations:––ideas, in short." ––John Dewey Out of the authors that I have read this year, Alfred North Whitehead and John Dewey are the two that
I have found the greatest commonality with in the subject of obtaining and gaining information. Whitehead speaks on education relating back to Life.
It seems to be the only way to become a person that can understand the world around him/her is to be a person who learned using life as the main

Now, instead of being fed information, we begin to formulate knowledge.
There is a problem (noticed detail), thinking, hypothesis (educated idea), experiment, conclusion which compares to the hypothesis and reaches for a
proof or disproof. We have created proof or even a habit. Whitehead expresses the danger of the implantation of inert ideas. Dewey wrote that "...ideas
are anticipations of possible solutions...and tested by the operation of acting upon them." Dewey was concerned with the school problems that are
assigned to students becoming empty pointless problems that importance ends with the beginning of the pupil as a human. An idea that came to mind
was to have a basic break down as far as the needed subject matter that has to be covered yet letting the pupil's go out and find it in their lives as human
beings. Dewey would describe this as an unscholastic approach.
A problem that can lie here, is insufficient material being covered or students not fulfilling their part. Another potential problem would lie in the size
of the class. A larger class size would have the great possibility of some

Vertigo and His Girl Friday
The films Vertigo and His Girl Friday, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and Howard Hawks respectively, are good representations of classical cinema. A
stigma associated with classical cinema is the film's portrayal of women. Feminist film theorists believe that the male protagonist play a more
prominent role while women are only something to be looked at and acted upon. Both films possess a male and a female protagonist. His Girl Friday
casts Cary Grant as a cunning newspaper editor named Walter Burns, as well as Rosalind Russell as former reporter and former wife of Walter, Hildy
Johnson. Vertigo stars James Stewart as a former detective named Scottie Ferguson, and Kim Novak as Madeleine Ester, awoman Scottie is hired to
investigate. Both films challenge the feminist's hypothesis with powerful and intelligent women who have some control over men in the film. Yet in
both films the male protagonist ultimately has control over the female even though the stigma is tested throughout the entirety of both films. In the
film His Girl Friday, Hildy Johnson is an ex–reporter whose goal is to settle down and have a normal life with her fiancГ© Bruce Baldwin. She

The Sweet Hereafter Analysis
Sometimes there is a situation that one is dragged into, such as some type of accident. For example, Mitchell Stephens is one of the narrators in
"The Sweet Hereafter" by Russell Banks. In his side of the story, he is a lawyer from New York who heard about a bus accident in Sam Dent where ten
children died in a bus crash. Mitchell is also the one lawyer representing Risa Walker and her husband in a negligence suit that financially
compensated them for the loss of their son Sean. Mitchell is not only just a lawyer like many others, but also had more experience. He sympathizes
with the parents who lost their children in the accident because, like these parents who lost their children, he also has a daughter Zoe, who is he can
consider dead due to her drug problem. To this reason, Mitchell Stephen has the most to gain by telling his tale to the reader because he seeks to
relieve himself from his grief and to help future children riding to school who do not have to come to the same fate as others in the accident.
One reason why Mitchell is trying to gain something by telling his tale is that he is trying to help the people who lost their children in the accident.
Mitchell might a lawyer but he did not come to San Dent just because there was a good case like the bus accident and he it was good pay, no, not

His fall and rise, shows exactly what he believes, and reveals his quest for freedom. Throughout the film, Maximus wants nothing but revenge for his
family and his eventual freedom. The film contians this theme within the scenes themselves, making background information unneeded.
Scott's film presents the overall purpose of he enhancement of life. Maximus, plays the role of the hero, who rises, and takes his revenge.
Although Maximus kills many people, he does so righteously, trying desperately to avenge his murdered family, and gain his freedom again. Not
once does maximus kill innocent people, or take the lives of those who did him no wrong. He only wants vengeance, on those who betrayed and
wronged him; those who made him a slave, and murdered his family. At one point, Maximus screams to the crowd, "are you not entertained,"
mocking their vile cheering, and death chants. The people however do not take notice of his mocking tone, only cheering louder. Maximus never
betrays his fellow soldiers, or harms innocent people. He only kills the people who block him from his freedom and revenge. Maximus' bravery and
valor, give his men the courage to fight and die, protecting their beliefs and freedoms. Maximus' bravery also gives the Roman people courage,
allowing them to oppose the corrupt Emperor, Commodus. When Maximus reveals himself, and swears his revenge, the roman people who honor and

love turns to steamy piss." (101). Stephen is set to find the cause, something or someone to blame for their misfortunes and to rage against whatever
forces took their child, "I don't know if it was the Vietnam war…I don't know

The Effect of Summer School on Rita in Educating Rita by Willy Russell
'Of course; you don't do Blake without doing innocence and experience, do y?'
When Frank explains to Rita that after summer school they will study William Blake, Rita says that she has already studied Blake and implies in such
a way that she almost disgraces Frank. Before summer school Rita has only been taught Frank and has only learnt his ideas, when she gains her own
confidence she then challenges Frank on his views to do with poetry by telling him about William Blake. This confidence reflects the effect which
summer school ultimately had upon Rita.
Willy Russell was born in Whiston, near Liverpool, England, in 1947. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After going to Summer School Rita herself has changed because before summer school she was just a normal student going to Frank to learn and she
felt too ashamed to be outspoken. Now that she has returned she has learnt that she needs to be more confident in herself and she now trusts herself
more. Rita feels now that she has been educated and is now able to relate and have meaningful conversations with people.
'I think the first question was about Chekhov; coz y' know I'm dead familiar with Chekhov now'
Rita's confidence has become more obvious because 'dead surprised' has now become 'dead familiar' this shows that Rita has now become a different
person.
Before Frank had met Rita he was unhappy with his life he was drinking a lot, bored of lecturing and teaching so he decided he would so some work
with the Open University and of course Rita was his first student.
'Can I offer you a drink? ... Scotch'
After Rita has been to Summer School, she treats Frank differently. She has realised that she doesn't just need Frank as a teacher anymore. When Frank
knows that Rita has already studied Blake he is quite surprised.
'Blake at summer school? You weren't supposed to do Blake at summer school, were you?
With Rita studying Blake at summer school, this shows us how Frank is losing his control over Rita. She is now determined to study elsewhere not

Corporate Social Responsibility ( Csr )
Corporate social responsibility has been a fixture in the business world for decades, and has become embedded in many universities as higher
education leaders seek alternative ways to achieve sustainability (Weiss, 2016). Social Responsibility can be defined as a code of conduct and action
beyond what is required by laws and regulations when running a particular organisation. As organizations do not operate in a vacuum, their activities
will impact their surroundings which include their stakeholders, society, and other influenced parties (Nejati et al., 2011). Universities are a crucial part
of modern society, and inescapably benefit from the communities in which they are based. A gooduniversity will look at finding ways to give back to ...

Therefore it is inferred that universities should be responsible towards society and their stakeholders.
For a university to be able to completely achieve the goal of USR, they need to understand the basics of Social Responsibility. Vallaeys (2013) has
identified the key features of SR as follows:
1.Social Responsibility is a responsibility of organisations for the negative impacts (social and environmental) they have caused through their actions
2.Social Responsibility requires a form of management that seeks to make society sustainable by eliminating unsustainable negative impacts and
promoting sustainable forms of development.
3.Social Responsibility is not completely disconnected from the law; it works in coordination with legal obligations.
4.Social Responsibility requires coordination between the stakeholders who are able to act on the negative impacts diagnosed.
But according to Schneller and Thöni (2011, p.16), since it is still an open field, most of what the universities practise as USR are within the
framework of quality management and accreditation. The accreditation and quality management standards in most countries have community or social
engagement criteria. This creates a suggestion that the universities will work within the confines of these standards to fulfil or meet the minimum
requirements. So is this an

He is strongly known for being a WWE wrestler, and an actor for the famous series The Fast and the Furious and many more. I believe that he is a successful man because he came from having absolutely nothing to making millions. A lot of people aren't very motivated to actually make a change in their life, but he didn't give up on himself. That is why I strongly believe that he is successful; however, he's not only successful by being rich. For example, how many people do you know that actually are determined to make a change in their lifestyle ? Therefore, he had to work around his schedule with school and work since he was involved in sports too Then, the next thing he probably had to do is decide on what he wanted to major in college. However, in his case he had to decide to either focus more in wrestling or acting. Johnson probably had to decide what benefitted him more between both options. Also, he had to realize what he loved, enjoyed, and was more passionate at doing. Not only did he had to focus on that, but he also had to focus on what would benefit his health later on in the future. In the movie, the emperor of Rome was Marcus Aurelius. He was a very victorious general. After his death he wanted Maximus to take the throne, and he wasn't even his son. Aurelius's son was very power hungry and wanted to rule. His plan was to rule Rome and take the throne. He wanted to murder the last ruler Marcus Aurelius and then execute Maximus, which was the new emperor after so then he would be next in line. When referring to tobacco in this paper I am talking about cigarettes, one of the most dangerous ways of getting tobacco due to a chemical compound called nicotine, the ingredient that causes addiction and what got the general public hooked. When breaking films into this type of category, one film that stands out among the rest has to be Gladiator. Gladiator can be argued as one of the greatest action movies of all time, and for good reasons. The soundtrack, dialogue, and characters have no equal in the revenge action category of film, and can be considered tops of pure action films. Gladiator is a perfectly well rounded movie that adds the best of all worlds to create the masterpiece seen today. Ridley Scott's masterpiece, Gladiator, was released to the public in 2000. The soundtrack has received critical acclaim from numerous reviews and was a best seller, selling millions of copies of the soundtrack alone to anxious listeners. The songs helped set the pace of the movie and made a good movie into an excellent movie. Some of the favorite songs from the soundtrack include "The Battle," "Elysium," and the favorite "Now We Are Free." Mixing a combination of soft melodies and ballads, with battle waltzes, the soundtrack covered all ground and provides future composers the groundwork for future war epics. While Hans Zimmer gets most of the credit and praise for Gladiator's score, he could not do it alone without Lisa Gerrard, who co–composed the score and provided the vocals. This soundtrack was so well received that it was nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award for best score, and won a Golden Globe for best original score. Compared to other action films, Gladiator is hard to top. As a reviewer of the soundtrack, Roko Zaper, said Gladiator, "By the very nature of the film itself, the score to Gladiator is perhaps hard to grasp for some, but in it Zimmer and Gerrard have created a score that transgresses its genre and brings the music into an unforgettable arena, an Elysium of drama if you will." As Zaper said, Gladiator separates and goes past any other action soundtrack. Gladiator's soundtrack ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay about Humour within the Play Educating Rita Humour within the Play Educating Rita Educating Rita has survived as a popular play in production because Willy Russell successfully combines humour with serious themes. Educating Rita, a play written in 1979, and by 1983 the fourth most popular play in Britain, remains a favourite of the British today. Based partly on his own experiences, Willy Russell created a theatrical masterpiece, remarkably with only two characters. So we ask ourselves the question: how did he accomplish this? I will explore just how the play has survived in current British culture, with hundreds of plays being written every year, yet still remaining a favourite of students, grandparents, and critics alike. I will first explore the humour within the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are also simple play on words between Frank and Rita: Frank: "Do you know Yeats?" Rita: "The wine Lodge?" Frank: "No. The poet." These small jokes all contribute to the overall authentic comedy within the play. There is also situational humour within the play. An example of this is when Frank attempts to help Rita learn to write good criticising literary essays, yet she has written an appreciative essay on "Rubyfruit Jungle," an erotic book that would never even be considered to be included on an English course. Frank's attempt to make Rita understand is completely wasted upon her at this moment in time, but is funny and keeps the audience interested to see if Rita will ever appreciate "Good literature." These comedic situations, juxtaposed with the more seriously natured ones, such as when Rita's flatmate attempts suicide, work well.

Rita is from an underprivileged background, where she feels trapped by the restraints it brings her. She wishes to "Find herself," and she plans to do this through English literature. Pony Express The Pony express was a mail delivery system, that started in April, 1860 and used a team of a person and a horse to deliver mail to people. People that wanted mail delivered to someone could put their mail in a little cubby and a mailman would come pick it up and deliver it to the place the person wanted it to be delivered to. The process of delivering mail on the Pony express took about 10 days. Although, it was much faster than any other way of delivering mail. Traveling The mailmen had to travel 2,000 miles through St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California, just to deliver mail! Some people died while they were traveling but some people survived. The mailmen had a lot on their hands, because they had to make sure the mail they had was being delivered to the right place, also they had to face the challenge of going across 3 states on horseback. One of the hardest things they had to do was sleep outside and fight wild animals.Even though traveling might have been hard, the mailmen got through it, and today we as the people appreciate that. ... • 10. Watching What W Say "Watching What We Say" Over the course of the semester we discussed many different theories on epistemology. Our focus was to try to understand if we can claim true knowledge from the things we think we know, and how we come to know them. Experience seems to be the major factor that plays a role in the way we come to know things. According to contextualists, language, more so the context in which it is used, also plays a role in the way establish knowledge. In this paper we will focus on two contextual theorists, Ludwig Wittgenstein and David Lewis. We will discuss their theories and few skepticisms about their theories. A major contextualist claim is that our attributions of knowledge can vary from person to person based on the user's context. The way we utter sentences, the many different contexts in which we use the words to form statements, may differ in truth value as well. According to an online article in the Stanford Encyclopedia, Patrick Rysiew describes contextualism as "entertaining of the possibility of some kind of pluralism concerning epistemic standards. In one instance, this took the form of the claim, in response to skepticism, that there are "two senses of 'know'"–one 'strong' or 'philosophical', the other 'weak' or 'ordinary'. So too, some of Wittgenstein's claims about the relation between meaning and use and the multiplicity of "language games", each with its own set of norms, opened the way for a more thoroughgoing kind of semantic pluralism with ... You should also be reasonably ambitious to attain your goals. Aman's ambition to attain wealth helps to make him a good man. Opportunities surround us in our everyday lives. But Conwell believed that to make money honestly was to preach the gospel and to be poor was wrong. What the people did not understand was that a wealthy person can also be a pious person. Conwell tells the people that they should have money and it is their Christian and godly duty to do so. While it is clear that Bertrand Russell wished for the continuation of the practice of philosophy, he acknowledges most people have no idea what philosophy is, outside of the idea of a group of people thinking about life. With this writing while giving some of the products that have come from philosophy, he also warns that not all answers can be gained from the philosophy. While definite answers can be gained through the sciences, philosophic study only raises more uncertainty. Bertrand Russell supports his arguments with insight that comes from teaching, practicing, and seeing the effects of philosophy both within himself and the people around him. While studying philosophy Russell will only intensify the uncertainty about the world around us and the inner workings of our mind. Likewise in support of Russell's argument, the study of sciences that is aforementioned such as; Phycology, Astronomy, and Physics which were originally pondered by philosophers has moved from philosophical theory to scientific study. Likewise with the pursuit and study of philosophy, the likelihood of the student holding on to the dogmatism, and predigests that is set forth by society and past experiences. The Sweet Hereafter and "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" Essay "The Sweet Hereafter and the Pied Piper" A tragic event can occur in no longer than a moment and produce a domino effect that can change everything in your life. The book "The Sweet Hereafter" by Russell Banks contains such an event. This book has a modernized undertone of the folk tale "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" by Robert Browning. This tale is carried throughout the books entirety. Both of these stories show connections in many ways and almost parallel one another in their basic plot of showing the painful effects disaster can have on a small town. While the people of Hamlin had the Piper to directly blame for their miseries, the people of Sam Dent did not. Both stories are based on the loss of the children in a small ... Similarly in the tale of "The Pied Piper" the town is left with only one child who is crippled and thus was unable to keep up with the rest of the children as they followed the Piper into the cave dancing in an enchanted trance. In both stories we later learn that these characters whom are left behind almost wish they had not been spared. Analysis of Bertrand RussellВґs The Problems of Philosphy... 06455401 1) The philosopher Bertrand Russell in his work, "The Problems of Philosophy," comes to some conclusions of the truth of objects in our world. Through questioning certain ideas and problems in our world, he breaks down what can know what really exists in the world and what does not. Russell, an empiricist, believes that through our sensory perception of our environment. However, our own individual perception can be skewed, and therefore is susceptible to err. Russell gives an example of three people, one is color blind, one is sick, and one is inebriated sick, and one is inebriated, and ask them to describe the same chair, they will all give you slightly different answers. Then if you take that chair and put it behind a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This consistency proposes to Russell, that we, at least, must have faith in the reality of a single, specific, real chair. To this commonsensible belief, he also goes on to propose the idea that real objects cause the sense data we intake, so therefore must be related to them in a certain noteworthy way. So from this what can we believe and not believe to exist? Well first of all we can believe that, if we are looking at the chair, we can conclude the object itself is real, there is a chair there. Our senses take in the sense data of a chair, four legs, a back rest, etc. We then take this data and use our prior knowledge of other chair like things, and we can come to the solution of the object we are looking at is a chair. This logic applies to all objects in such a manner. However we cannot truly believe that certain things truly exists. Such as the fact that we cannot truly believe the existence of certain characteristics of an objects when it's subject outside influence, such as a chair in water. To the naked eye, the chair would look distorted, but it is not so, the water distorts our perception of the chair, therefore deceiving our view of the reality of the characteristics of the chair. In conclusion, Russell gives us an answer to the question, if our senses can be easily deceived and tricked into perceiving and reality that is false, how can we believe it ... Not only can this statement be applied to the sciences, but also to how we behave on a daily basis. Russel Conwell's claim in his speech "Acres of Diamonds" that poor people make themselves poor and rich people make themselves rich defends the belief that we are responsible for our own success. This means that even if you come from an impoverished background you can change your situation for the better and fulfill your potential by leading a "rich" life. I agree with Conwell's proposition that you are in charge of your own destiny. When you look at his speech and Temple current six commitments upheld by Richard M. Englert, the university's president, you can find many connections. But along with these similarities, there are also points that have changed and evolved to suit the needs of the current student. As we break down the six commitments, it is clear that the founder's initial desires and the present day goals of the university are brought together to create Temple's mission statement. The first commitment made by the university is its devotion to its students in serving their financial needs. Every graduate of a university has to struggle with dealing with debt and paying off student loans. • 19. The Deplection Of Bertrand Russel's Reflection On Worldview Worldview Reflection paper Philosophy is all about knowledge and the comprehension of existence. It tries to answer many questions about our reality. In fact, lots of philosophers, or as some are called, Humanists, wants to understand the purpose of life and so, the human's status. In this essay, it will be discussed how Worldviews can have many aspects and how interpretations of life might be different from a person to another. In fact, Bertrand Russel's worldview will be explained, as well as my worldview and how those two might or might not be similar. As a starting point, Russel believes a lot in human's freedom (Norman, 5). He thought that everyone should have a free will, do their own choices and use their intellectual capacities as way of showing their "Human dignity" (Norman, 5). Moreover, he is recognized as a secular humanist, which means that he does not believe in religion. He thinks that humans should create a great environment of living not for God, but for themselves (Norman, 5). Finally, Bertrand Russel does believe in sciences, in fact "Russel's description of reality is a mathematical, logical structure given to us in circumscribed doses according to our subject positions" (Briggs, 7). Briefly, he thinks that everything has a scientific explanation which is one of the reasons he does not believe in any religious explanations of the universe and have an atheistic worldview. In addition, I would describe myself as a pacifist which is the belief that anything can be done without violence and with equality. As a child, I used to play football with my three brothers and our friends (which were all guys except me). Since I was the only girl, I really had difficulties to be accepted or picked up in a team, and each time was a real fight for my rights to play with them. This is why today I cannot accept inequalities between sexes and I do not hesitate to take part of a conflict in which girls are not considered equal. Furthermore, I always had animals around me during my childhood so when I found an abandoned cat in the street two years ago, I did not hesitate to take her with me and pay for the vaccines or other necessary treatments so I could keep her. The painter wants to know what things seem to be, the practical man and the philosopher want to know what they are. . . . but if reality is not what appears, have we any means of knowing whether there is any reality at all? – Bertrand Russell, The Problems of Philosophy In everyday life people distinguish between the real size of the sun and the size it appears to be, between the natural components of a cloud (a concentration of water droplets) and what the cloud seems to be (some fleecy substance?), and so on. However, when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Does the universe exist as humans know and describe it, or is the universe just a false reality in which nothing really exists at all? This is all based on the presuppositions of knowledge, those "philosophical principles that lie at the foundations of virtually all of our knowledge and beliefs." Without them, we could believe nothing, know nothing, and think nothing else. The presupposition that the universe even exists is the fundamental belief that breathes air into the lungs of science. Although most people choose not to question the existence of themselves and the universe around them, the status of such principles is just as much in question as the status of any big philosophical questions. No matter how obvious the answers may seem to be, existence of any entity, physical or otherwise, is very difficult to prove, and by most popular standards, impossible. I believe, however, that existence is not provable through reason based on experience, but by that very experience. While many great [and amateur] philosophers argue that the life in its natural state is based on God, or science, or any of a great number of other things, I argue that life is merely based on consciousness. It states that even though philosophy doesn't give us a certainty of true answers, it suggests many possibilities which enlarge our thoughts and free them from tyranny of custom. He also supports the idea that philosophy is beneficial because it "enriches intellectual imagination". The essay brings up the points of the practical man, and why they are at a loss of intellectual imagination because they don't explore the unknown by viewing life as simple. As evidence, he uses an example of mass disease and poverty of a society. Thetheory is that in those conditions, there would still be much to be improved to produce a valuable society. Even if the society has the proper food supplies, they need the 'goods of the mind' (knowledge) to build a well–governed society. He believes practical men undermine that aspect, thereby explaining their lack of intellectual imagination. The next argument is that philosophy saves us from convictions, prejudices, and cultural beliefs. The affect that that has on a person is to open up a fresh prospective with very little bias. He believed for this to be beneficial to people socially, by developing empathy which helps you understand others points of view. That theory goes hand–in–hand and gives a fine segway to his fourth and final argument of "the freedom and equity learned from philosophical contemplation reflecting in your personality (action and emotion). When I first learned that this was a required course for my degree curriculum, I did not believe I would find value in taking the course. Now I am going to present my evaluation of why I have changed my mind. What is the definition of philosophy? The dictionary would define it as "the study of the basic ideas about knowledge, truth, right and wrong, religion, and the nature and meaning of life". My first response was "truth, right and wrong, religion, meaning of life", how can that help a computer science student? The historian would be able to go on for hours churning out historical facts. If you were to ask the same question of philosophers, they would have to admit that their studies have obtained positive along with negative results. The reason for this is that as soon as any knowledge about a subject gets definite, it turns into its own science, and is no longer called philosophy. (Bertrand Russell p21 Book). I agree with Russell that the questions that philosophers try to answer are a part of what drives ambiguity in philosophy. Russell states that philosophy is not just about recommending answers to questions, additionally it is to make sure that people are aware of the questions coupled with the importance of each of those questions. Questions he posed like, "is consciousness a permanent part of the universe giving hope to indefinite growth in wisdom and the questions of good and evil" are valid questions that should be applied to all disciplines. Being employed in the field of computer science feels like there is indefinite growth with what we are watching being designed today, at the same time we shouldn't overlook the morality in the things we create. I would agree with Russell's conclusion that we need to study the questions. Before I took Introduction to Philosophy, if you were to ask me any of the questions Russell mentions above I would have had no comment or opinion on any of them. I never thought about them before. It has a ring on it, which means he is married. In the background there are children laughing, which could show that he is also a family man. The woodwind instruments create a calming atmosphere that match the autumn colours used in the shot. When the shot changes severely to cold and dark colours, it proves that he was only dreaming of his family before going to battle. He claims there are benefits to laziness and that most wise, experienced people are, in fact, lazy. Morley's purpose is to glorify lazy people and persuade people to believe that they can be successful because he lists examples of smart lazy people and he uses many examples in which laziness is helpful and the opposite is destructive to support his cause. Christopher Morely used examples of lazy successful people to make his point. "Doctor Johnson, who was one of the world's great philosophers, was lazy." This exemplifies how he uses lackadaisical intellectuals to support his cause. "It is the bustling man who always gets put on committees, who is asked to solve the problems of other people and neglect his own." • 33. appearence and reality Essay Appearance and Reality In Chapter One Bertrand Russell basically wants to know the true meaning of "reality". The truth is that "reality" can never truly be determined. I say this because there is a difference between believing and actually knowing. For example I know the desk in the front of the classroom is real. I know this because all of my senses concur. Now when I try to determine to color, the texture or even the shape of the desk I will run into a problem. Just as the example given in the text, the tables color may look difference according to the amount of light that is on it. How can we truly know the feeling, or taste, or sound, or anything of any given object. If you touch something how do you know you felt it with enough force? If you taste something how do you know you tasted enough of it? When you hear something how do you know if you heard right? Another thing that Bertrand Russell speaks of is illusion. An illusion is an erroneous perception of reality. This is when the mind plays tricks. An example is our dreams. When we awake we sometimes aren't sure if what had just happened was a dream or in fact a real occurrence. Another example which everyone is familiar with is an optical illusion. When you see something from a distance and its appearance can be obscure. The closer you find yourself to the obscurity, the less obscure it seems. If there is a something miles away from you in the distance, your eyes tell you that there is nothing more than a mere dot. As the "dot" comes closer you eventually realize that it was not a dot, but was actually something different all together. Once again it is nearly impossible to determine the "truth". All of our senses combined must agree upon the final result. In conclusion it is hard to determine what is "real" and what is not. Even when consulting all of our senses what is "real" can still be questioned. How do I as my own person know that my senses concur with someone else's senses? Dewey wrote that "...ideas are anticipations of possible solutions...and tested by the operation of acting upon them." Dewey was concerned with the school problems that are assigned to students becoming empty pointless problems that importance ends with the beginning of the pupil as a human. An idea that came to mind was to have a basic break down as far as the needed subject matter that has to be covered yet letting the pupil's go out and find it in their lives as human beings. • 36. Vertigo and His Girl Friday The films Vertigo and His Girl Friday, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and Howard Hawks respectively, are good representations of classical cinema. A stigma associated with classical cinema is the film's portrayal of women. Feminist film theorists believe that the male protagonist play a more prominent role while women are only something to be looked at and acted upon. Both films possess a male and a female protagonist. His Girl Friday casts Cary Grant as a cunning newspaper editor named Walter Burns, as well as Rosalind Russell as former reporter and former wife of Walter, Hildy Johnson. Vertigo stars James Stewart as a former detective named Scottie Ferguson, and Kim Novak as Madeleine Ester, awoman Scottie is hired to investigate. To this reason, Mitchell Stephen has the most to gain by telling his tale to the reader because he seeks to relieve himself from his grief and to help future children riding to school who do not have to come to the same fate as others in the accident.
