Skill Station : Segregation of biomedical waste and Handwashing
I) Decontamination:
Please write the appropriate response for each questions: (4 marks)
a) What is the strength of Sodium Hypochlorite /bleaching powder used for disinfection
in COVID-19?
b) How much bleaching powder is used to prepare 1 liter of 1% bleaching solution ?
c) For how long are fomites of patients suffering from COVID-19 kept in bleaching

d) How often must the prepared 1% Sodium Hypochlorite solution be changed?
II) Demonstrate steps of Hand washing: (6 marks)
Articles required- A clean tray containing
- Soap in a soap dish / liquid hand wash
- Hand towel/ paper towel/ tissue
- Running water
Steps of the procedure
1 Keep nails clean and short
2 Remove wrist watch and all jewelry
from hand
3 Roll up sleeves 5 cm above elbow
4 Stand in front of sink and ensure that
uniform does not touch the sink
5 Turn on tap and adjust flow of water
6 Wet hands and wrist thoroughly under
running water, keep both hands lower
than elbow while washing
7 Apply soap and hand wash to cover all
hand surfaces
8 Rub hands and palm to produce enough
larther
Steps of hand washing as per WHO
and CDC guidelines
Time- 1 minute, high risk-2minutes
Each step to be done 5 times
9 Scrub hands in circular motion covering
the following areas
i) Scrub palms, fingers and web spaces
ii)Scrub back of hand
iii)Scrub fingers and knuckles
iv)Scrub thumbs
v)Scrub finger tips, nails and creases
vi)Scrub wrist and forearm upto the
elbow
10 Wash hands ensuring removal of soap
from applied areas / if using alcohol rub,

III) Segregation of biomedical waste

4. Newborn Resuscitation
Case: You are caring for a mother who is about to deliver a baby of 35 weeks gestation and the
liquor is meconium stained. How will you prepare to receive the baby? When the baby is born he
is not crying. Demonstrate how you will resuscitate him?

1 Getting ready with:
2 Look for meconium and suck mouth and nose at the mother’s abdomen
3 Dry the baby, remove wet towel and wrap in warm dry towel
4 Assess breathing
5 Cut the cord immediately, if baby is not breathing well
6 Place the baby on a warm, firm flat surface, preferably on a radiant
warmer
7 Position the baby in slight neck extension using a shoulder roll
Suction of mouth and nose
Stimulate the baby with back rub / 3 flicks on the soles
Reposition and reassess breathing
8 If not breathing provide bag and mask ventilation for 30 seconds, make
sure that the chest rises.
-The mask should cover the victims mouth and nose completely without
covering the eyes or overlapping the chin
-Use the E-C clamp technique to hold the mask in place while you lift
the jaw to hold the airway open. (With thumb and index finger of one
hand make a ‘C ‘on the sides of face mask, pressing the edges of the
mask to the face
-Use remaining fingers to lift the angles of the jaw (3 fingers form an
‘E’ ) open the airway, and press the face to the mask.
9 Reassess the baby after 30 seconds of ventilation
5. 10 If still not breathing continue bag and mask ventilation, start oxygen
and assess the heart rate
11 If baby is still not breathing, continue bag and mask ventilation and
refer to higher centre
12 At any point if baby starts breathing, provide observational care
