The Seven Works Of Mercy By Michelangelo Merisi Da Caravaggio
One piece of art stood out to me in the book was The Seven Works of Mercy which is an oil painting
done by Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio circa 1607. The painting depicts the
seven corporal works of mercy, to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked,
welcome the stranger, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead, which are in traditional
catholic belief a set of compassionate acts concerning the material welfare of other. The painting
was made for, and is still housed in, the church of Pio Monte della Misericordia in Naples.
Originally it was meant to be seven separate panels around the church; however, Caravaggio

The Magdalen With The Smoking Flame Summary
The Magdalen with the Smoking Flame is a work of art done by Georges De La Tour. It was
completed in the year 1640 using oil paint on canvas in France, and it is now located at the Los
Angeles County Museum of Art. This painting is of a woman, possibly pregnant, sitting leaning on a
table her head rested on one hand. She also has a skull on her lap and the other hand placed on it. In
the back ground there is a small stack of books and candlelight. More than anything on this painting,
it is focused on the woman state of mind and heart rather than the skull or anything else. The simple
arrangement of how the artist used vertical and horizontal shapes draws the viewer really close into
the Magdalen's thoughts. The skull and the books purpose is to set the mood in what the woman
might be feeling. The focal point of the entire painting seems to be the candle because not only is it
bright, but the woman is gazing profoundly into it. Everything in the painting is smoothed surface.
The painter did not use texture in the paint but only in very few areas like in the oil of the candle.
The tones in this painting are warm. There are a lot of browns and ambers. A few cool colors were
used to define the shadows of the shapes with blue. The attention getter is the candle light. It's
almost hard to ignore because it is so bright. The second brightest thing in the painting is the
woman's shirt, but even that is not as bright because of all the shadows and creases in it. Another

the mid–ground cave and background night sky planes are largely ambiguous and flattened.

in the background. The juxtaposition between the divine light on the upper left and the moonlight on
the upper right creates a compositional balance. The overall composition of the work contains

The beginning of Renaissance art can be tracked all the way back to Italy in the late 13th and early
14th and 15th centuries. During this Renaissance period, Italian scholars and artists saw themselves
as bringing back the ideals and achievements of Roman culture. Their art tried to capture the
experience of the individual and the beauty and mystery of the natural world. The Italian
Renaissance was considered a rebirth of old values in art such as literature and philosophy. It was a
period for the artist to develop that aimed for the revival of naturalism. Its influence moved through
Europe and brought back the cultural and scientific ideas that shaped artistic pieces for the next half

Instead of having flat, stiff images, faces had not looked more realistic as bodies were painted in
more realistic form as their poses looked more human–like, and figures now expressed real emotion.
While this was happening, Artists still tried to create work that were realistic but with fluidity and
not as much detail.. Although Giotto in this time period had strived towards adding a perspective, it
wasn 't until the arrival of the architects Brunelleschi and Leon Battista Alberti that it became big
style to incorperate for many painters. Dossi's work of The Holy Family came in a time late during
the Renaissance. A time called the "High Renaissance". Despite the growing realism being achieved
in their art, High Renaissance artists such as Dossi aimed for beauty, and harmony more than
realism, which was the focus in the past. Their paintings may have been based on nature but they
had no interest in replication. Instead they looked for the ultimate beauty within the picture. This
provoked artists towards the idea of perfection. Greek philosophy actually influenced this style in
the high Renaissance. It "provided the secret of the perfect human type with its proportions,
muscular structure, oval face, triangular forehead, straight nose, and balance with the weight on one
hip, which can be seen in the immensely expressive sculpture of Michelangelo" (Botticelli). The

In this essay am going to talk about an oil painting called 'Joseph Sturge' by an artist 'Alexander
Rippingille'. 'Joseph Sturge' is a businessperson, English Quaker, abolitionist, activist and leader
of the 'Birmingham Anti– Slavery Sociality' created in '1826'. 'Joseph Sturge' worked in 'radical
political' actions supporting the pacifism, working class right and finally universal emancipation of
slaves. Year 1830 'Joseph Sturge' published books that contained information about apprenticeship
system in Jamaica this helped persuade the British parliament to adopt an earlier full emancipation
date. Finally, he would find villages free with 'Baptists' to provide the living area for free slaves.

statures represent peace hold a drove and an a live branch, with a lamb at her feet and symbolic of
innocence. The other female statue represents the charity offering comfort and succour to two Afro–
Caribbean infants, recalling the fight and victory over slavery. Joseph Sturges name and date of
death on. You can see that the bible is in the painting on the right by his arm also on the statue this
suggests that where ever he goes the bible comes with him because of his strong faith with god.
Finally the bible is on the statue to show people that he carried it all the time with him.

Symbolism In St George And The Dragon
Known from legend, St. George is the knight who is told to have slain a dragon in Libya to save a
young woman, generally known as holding the title of princess, as expressed in Raphael's painting
St. George and the Dragon. In this oil painting, the dragon is seemingly the embodiment of evil in
the town while St. George is the knight that risks his life to slay and rid of the evil within the town
in a somewhat chivalrous manner. In St. George and the Dragon, Raphael expresses Christianity
combined with chivalry in his painting through the use of small details, symbolic representations,
contrast, human figures, and the depiction of these human figures and or characters. Raphael could
have done this due to the rise of Christianity in the Renaissance era and chivalry in art at the time.
The expression of Christianity can be represented through symbolism, color, and the details of

George slaying the dragon can be represented as the destruction of the Devil and all evil within that

Emily Carr: The Dark Oil Painting On The Woods
Upon reflection for these exhibits, they all left their own mark on me and I was certainly blown
away with some of the art works. In the Emily Carr exhibit there were multiple artists that had their
own style and each was unique. My personal favorites in that gallery where;
Artist: Emily Carr. Painting: Shore and forest (Cordova bay) My depiction: The dark oil paint on the
paper kinda give this calming landscape a very rugged look to it. Almost unsettling. Lots of
movement with the oil paint. Artist: Lawren S. Harris. Painting: From berg lake, evening, #4 in the
"sketches of mount Robson" series. My depiction: I appreciate this one for it's multitude of tones.
Though it is a monotone painting it is beautiful done in the day that the changes of color are melded
together very well and that all the shedding is done marvelously. The mountain seemed so perfect
and untouched. Tones and clean lines with oil paint has always been a struggle of mine.

Unfortunately I don't remember any of the scroll names, but with the memory still fresh, the
majority of the scrolls all had calligraphy on them with a beautiful either landscape or some sort of
gorgeous imagery. The cultures (mainly chinese) loved to incorporate calligraphy into their art, and
they have been doing it for years upon years, and each time it comes out with beautiful results. Back

mythology, is a spirit of punishment. Furies are normally depicted as one of the three goddesses that

put in the painting to represent Meleager's impending death. Although there are different versions of
how Meleager died, the wild boar hunt is the main cause of the reason he died. Meleager killing the

that time period. I will begin by discussing how the renaissance changed over the time and how art

Around the age of 14, da Vinci began a lengthy apprenticeship with an artist named Andrea Del
Verrocchio in Florence. Where he then learned a variety of skills like metal working, leather arts,
carpentry, drawing, painting and sculpting. His earliest known work is a pen and ink drawing of a
landscape in the Amo valley. He later started his own work shop. Using his inventive skills, da Vinci
sketched war machines such a war chariot with blades mounted on the sides, and armored tank
propelled by two men cranking a shaft and even an enormous crossbow that required a small army

Da Vinci began to seriously study anatomy and dissect human and animal bodies. He's drawings of
fetus in utero, the heart and vascular system, sex organs and other bone and muscular structures are

zoology, hydraulics, aeronautics and physics.

The Museum Of Art Exhibitions
Last week I decided to visit one of the most well–known art exhibitions in Dallas. As I entered the
Dallas Museum of Art I was immediately captivated by the striking and vivid acrylic mural on the
walls created by Nicolas Party entitled Pathway. Party said to have worked on–site at the exhibit for
three weeks to transform the Museum 's central pathway into a mesmerizing, lively colored forest; it
was such a contrast to the rest of the exhibit's entrance. Straight ahead was the Nancy and Tim
Hanley Gallery filled with dull blank white walls matched with a few art pieces; versus the pathway
on the right filled with colorful life that was yanking me in the direction of a brand new world. To
me it seemed as if the walls were desperately waiting to be brought to life by other inspired artist
like Party. The mural not only caught my attention but it made me thirst for more fascinating art as
such. As I continued down the intriguing path filled with distinctive shaped trees and bushes
accompanied by splashes of different shades of green, blue and purple I found a random, seemingly
misplaced painting right in the middle of the pathway. The portrait instantly became one of my
favorites. There hung a large painting of two straight–faced men with serious expressions having
thin yet boldly dark eyebrows, perfectly winged eyeshadow and cherry red lipstick. This portrait

creativity, and less reserved pieces were created. The Renaissance was not only confined to Italy,

The Italians may not have had detailed frescos and vivid colors; however they were the leaders in
creating a harmonious scale between the landscape and the objects or figures that adorned it. They
developed a focused on perspective and made their art a science. They used mathematical
measurements and thus the piece was given a great deal of depth and realism. The fresco appears to
be an extended recessed space in the room. In Angelico's piece, linear perspective is created by the
placement and angles of the walls. The edge of the porch, the base of the first column and the lines
of the bench establish a linear perspective. Italian painters also focused on the studying of classical
art and architecture. In Angelico's piece, the arches supported by the stance of the ionic columns
show the interest and study that the Italians adapted into their work. The Northern Renaissance
painters eventually incorporated perspective in their work. Van Eyck used intuitive perspective,
making objects appear smaller and closer together as they are placed further in the distance to create
the feeling of depth in his piece.
Iconography is more prevalent in the Northern Renaissance artwork compared to the Italian

The shell is important because it shows that Venus is standing on something more precious than land
or water. The painting is done well because it does focus on her hair causing a wind effect to take
place, and the detail in the body language is very similar to the painting. The shading is not done
well on the cake and I feel it is in uncomfortable parts that makes it look unrealistic. I also noticed
that her head is a little small so it seems like it was rushed. Although it does not look as realistic, the
body is not bad. The background in the cake is a lot lighter than the background in the painting. The
cake would improve a lot of it had some shadows for objects in the background to make it more 3D

I see: The scene presents a young maid dressed in white comming outside a large white building.
The background is dominated by white walls with brick texture and two windows (one opened). The
characteristics of this artwork is incredible contrast between black and white, the shadows are strong
and blacks (inside the building) are deep. The lines are straight and shading is strong and directional.
The subject matters the most. The dominant colours used are whites and blacks. Light saturation is
very strong but is balanced with dark areas. The predominant mood is feeling of anticipation. The
girls looks far away, her chin raised and eyes looking, waiting.
I think: Edward Hopper's techniques were relatively simple. He painted directly, brusquely, focusing
on covering what he wants to say through the scene. In Hopper's style the subject which is conveyed
matters rather than a way in which it was conveyed (which mainly matters in Matisse's style).
Personally I think that the way in which it was shown also matters in Hopper's style. In this artwork
the contrast, strong shadings and straight geometrical shapes create illusion of isolation and
simplicity. Strong shading creates mystery and elegance but also suspension. The process Hopper

The medium of this particular piece looks to be oil on canvas. The composition is pretty simple with
the main focus being an item of some sort being dangled and a portrait of one bird. There is a
multitude of colors present in this piece. It is bright and soft with light and dark tones. The artist has

Reflection About Museum
The museum that I went to for this project was the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. It was a
new experience for me since I have never been to a museum before. I went with my mom and my
brother. I choose to go to this museum because my mom has visited before and she mentioned there
were a lot of paintings. I didn't expect to see sculptures or a beautiful garden area outside.
The first of the three works I chose was Susanna and The Elders, which was painted by artist Jan
Massys in 1564. It is an oil on panel, approximately 3.5 ft x 6.5 ft, and is located in the 14th–16th
centuries wing of the museum. I was first attracted to this painting because I thought that the lady,
Susanna, was beautiful and powerful since she is the focal point. Upon further inspection, however,
I personally didn't like how the two elder men were spying on Susana since it is violating her
privacy. The next work I chose was Sappho Recalled to Life by the Charm of Music by Louis Ducis.
It's an oil on canvas that was made in 1811 and is approximately 4 ft x 5 ft. You can find the painting
in the 17th–18th centuries wing of the museum. I didn't really like it at first because it looked like
the lady was in distress and I first thought that the scene dealt with death. The final piece I chose
was Vincent Van Gogh's The Mulberry Tree, which he created in 1889. This oil on canvas is
approximately 1.5 ft x 2ft and is found in the Van Gogh room. I liked it because it is fascinating how
he made one single tree look unique and stylized.
Out of the three works, I decided to do a formal analysis on Susanna and the Elders. To start off, the
subject matter is Susanna stripping to take take a bath and her maids are leaving her to her privacy.
However, there are two older men behind her who are secretly watching her.
Regarding lines, there are expressive lines used for the body figures, the trees, parts of the windows.
Analytical lines are also used in the background, specifically the decor of the building, and are used
in the design of the stone and wood structure in the foreground. There are also implied lines which
are seen in the pointing of fingers by the two maids and Susanna, which implicate that the maids are

When looking at "Madonna with the Long Neck," the colors are subdued and dull but his use of
color with the High Renaissance formula – the primary colors. In terms of mannerism, elongation
was thought to create a more elegant and graceful look, which may be one of the main reasons why
Mannerist art contained a lot of unnatural looking human figures. In the painting, I see a lot of
elongation being used in different areas as well as oddly proportioned bodies. Madonna herself has a
very extended neck, which holds up her smaller sized head making her look unusual and abnormal.
Below her neck, I see her unnaturally slanted shoulders and her elongated fingers resting on her
chest. Her legs also appear to be very long as they look much bigger than her narrow upper body.
This makes for Madonna being a very colossal and dominant figure. Furthermore, when comparing
Madonna to the women who stand beside her, Madonna is huge. In Madonna's lap is her baby Christ
who also has unnaturally long features. The body of baby Christ is so long especially his legs. It
looks like a much older boy. I think Pontormo wanted the audience to focus more on the bodies and
the drama, rather than the specific details.
In "Venus of Urbino," Titian formed a good composition that balances somewhat the delicate static

Abraham is the most striking figure in the piece, as he is adorned in a richly colored red and gold
fabric. The red on his clothes is most likely meant to symbolize the blood of sacrifice, and the gold
to represent the nobility of sacrificing something precious in the name of God. Abraham tilts his
face to the heavens, seeming strong and obedient to God's commands, where a cherub figure reaches
out to him with a sympathetic look. In one hand, Abraham grasps the knife with which he will take
his son's life. The dagger is out of Isaac's view, which is how sacrifices were traditionally conducted;
without the sacrificial creature seeing the weapon and therefore leaving them in the dark about their
own swift demise. Isaac looks anything but ignorant of the situation, however, he is naked, bent over
as if quivering in fear, with a forlorn expression on his face. Unlike his father, Isaac does not raise
his eyes to the sky; instead he looks despondently at the ground. This suggests that Abraham is
superior because of his strong faith. Abraham also kneels on the sacrificial alter, with his son
crouching below, giving him a fuller physical advantage over his son. The angel is above Abraham,
as it is a servant of heaven, and Abraham is depicted as higher than Isaac, as he is a faithful, trusting
minion of the higher force. There are robes on the ground and a tree in the background, along with
another, less obvious figure and perhaps some animals. But all are dull compared to Abraham's
might and the winged servant of God that speaks to him ("Andrea Del Sarto–The Sacrifice of Isaac–

wave shapes. I think the author was trying to emphasize the waviness of the hair. Also, she uses

The Mérode Altarpiece by the Master of Flémalle is an oil painting on 3 wooden panels whose
specific date of creation is likely between 1425 and 1430. This hinged triptych is relatively small in
size measuring slightly over 2 feet tall and about 4 feet wide with its two winged panels open. The
Mérode Altarpiece belongs to a group of paintings associated with a Tournai workshop led by
Robert Campin, also known as the Master of Flémalle, whose workshop fostered some of the
earliest and most outstanding painters who were pioneers of the new Flemish style. The Mérode

Carlos Almaraz Primitive People
I went to the National Museum of Mexican Art because I've previously been to the Art Institute
before and wanted to go somewhere different. I also did not know that this museum existed and was
really curious to find out more about it. The artwork I have chosen is Primitive People by Carlos
Almaraz. Made on a canvas with oil paint in 1985. This artwork is placed on the wall in a frame
with a bar in front of the painting meaning you can't get too close or touch the artwork. The artworks
surrounding the one I have chosen are displayed the same way there are some objects in the center
of the room displayed in glass cases where no one can touch. The color and confusing caught my
eye by this piece. It made me want to know more about what was going on in the painting the
background of it.
This Artwork has a representational style because the artist is talking about The Vietnam war that
happened and he lived through that. I believe it's representational because the war that he's talking
about in this artwork happened in real life. There was a lot of wars going on during his time alive
and he was able to see them. He wanted to show us how he saw the Vietnam war through his eyes in
this painting. In this artwork, I see a bunch of the color red and pink throughout the whole painting
representing that there's a lot of blood distributed since he stated that in the wars that he saw there
was a ton of blood everywhere. There's also a bunch of texture in this painting when you look
closely it looks like there are chunks of plaster on the surface all over the artwork. Another visual
element that I saw was very similar pattern on the trees as well as the people they're very similar in
the way that they're shaped.
The visual element that I believe is the most dominant one is the color. I believe the color red and
pink are focused a ton all over. Mr. Almaraz wanted to make a statement in this artwork by saying
that blood was the main effect of war and that was the main element in war. Which is why he made
that the main color all over. The color red is on just the people and the color pink is towards the
background and in the sky which I believe represents the smoke that was happening during the war.

painting might be based on sketches from 1856 or may date from a later trip to Switzerland. The

The painting depicts the seven corporal works of mercy, to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead, which are in traditional catholic belief a set of compassionate acts concerning the material welfare of other. The painting was made for, and is still housed in, the church of Pio Monte della Misericordia in Naples. This painting is of a woman, possibly pregnant, sitting leaning on a table her head rested on one hand. She also has a skull on her lap and the other hand placed on it. In the back ground there is a small stack of books and candlelight. More than anything on this painting, it is focused on the woman state of mind and heart rather than the skull or anything else. The simple arrangement of how the artist used vertical and horizontal shapes draws the viewer really close into the Magdalen's thoughts. The skull and the books purpose is to set the mood in what the woman might be feeling. The focal point of the entire painting seems to be the candle because not only is it bright, but the woman is gazing profoundly into it. Everything in the painting is smoothed surface. The painter did not use texture in the paint but only in very few areas like in the oil of the candle. The tones in this painting are warm. There are a lot of browns and ambers. A few cool colors were used to define the shadows of the shapes with blue. The attention getter is the candle light. It's almost hard to ignore because it is so bright. As I entered the Dallas Museum of Art I was immediately captivated by the striking and vivid acrylic mural on the walls created by Nicolas Party entitled Pathway. Party said to have worked on–site at the exhibit for three weeks to transform the Museum 's central pathway into a mesmerizing, lively colored forest; it was such a contrast to the rest of the exhibit's entrance. Straight ahead was the Nancy and Tim Hanley Gallery filled with dull blank white walls matched with a few art pieces; versus the pathway on the right filled with colorful life that was yanking me in the direction of a brand new world. To me it seemed as if the walls were desperately waiting to be brought to life by other inspired artist like Party. The mural not only caught my attention but it made me thirst for more fascinating art as such. As I continued down the intriguing path filled with distinctive shaped trees and bushes accompanied by splashes of different shades of green, blue and purple I found a random, seemingly misplaced painting right in the middle of the pathway. There hung a large painting of two straight–faced men with serious expressions having thin yet boldly dark eyebrows, perfectly winged eyeshadow and cherry red lipstick. I went with my mom and my brother. I choose to go to this museum because my mom has visited before and she mentioned there were a lot of paintings. I didn't expect to see sculptures or a beautiful garden area outside. The first of the three works I chose was Susanna and The Elders, which was painted by artist Jan Massys in 1564. It is an oil on panel, approximately 3.5 ft x 6.5 ft, and is located in the 14th–16th centuries wing of the museum. I was first attracted to this painting because I thought that the lady, Susanna, was beautiful and powerful since she is the focal point. Upon further inspection, however, I personally didn't like how the two elder men were spying on Susana since it is violating her privacy. The next work I chose was Sappho Recalled to Life by the Charm of Music by Louis Ducis. It's an oil on canvas that was made in 1811 and is approximately 4 ft x 5 ft. You can find the painting in the 17th–18th centuries wing of the museum. I didn't really like it at first because it looked like the lady was in distress and I first thought that the scene dealt with death. The final piece I chose was Vincent Van Gogh's The Mulberry Tree, which he created in 1889. This oil on canvas is approximately 1.5 ft x 2ft and is found in the Van Gogh room. I liked it because it is fascinating how he made one single tree look unique and stylized. Out of the three works, I decided to do a formal analysis on Susanna and the Elders. To start off, the subject matter is Susanna stripping to take take a bath and her maids are leaving her to her privacy. However, there are two older men behind her who are secretly watching her. Regarding lines, there are expressive lines used for the body figures, the trees, parts of the windows. The artworks surrounding the one I have chosen are displayed the same way there are some objects in the center of the room displayed in glass cases where no one can touch. The color and confusing caught my eye by this piece. It made me want to know more about what was going on in the painting the background of it. This Artwork has a representational style because the artist is talking about The Vietnam war that happened and he lived through that. I believe it's representational because the war that he's talking about in this artwork happened in real life. There was a lot of wars going on during his time alive and he was able to see them. He wanted to show us how he saw the Vietnam war through his eyes in this painting. In this artwork, I see a bunch of the color red and pink throughout the whole painting representing that there's a lot of blood distributed since he stated that in the wars that he saw there was a ton of blood everywhere. There's also a bunch of texture in this painting when you look closely it looks like there are chunks of plaster on the surface all over the artwork. Another visual element that I saw was very similar pattern on the trees as well as the people they're very similar in the way that they're shaped. The visual element that I believe is the most dominant one is the color. I believe the color red and pink are focused a ton all over.
