Mexico (www.fridakahlo.com). Frida Kahlo was not only a magnificent painter, but also a
representation of her birth country Mexico, through her meaningful paintings. While in the midst of
nobody but herself, Frida found great inspiration to paint during the early to mid 1900's. Her passion
for painting came from her traffic accident as a teenager, which left her paralyzed due to fractures in

This accident caused life–threatening injuries including: fractures to her spine, collarbone and ribs, a
shattered pelvis, and shoulder and foot injuries ("A Tribute to Frida Kahlo"). Not only did those
brutal injuries occur, but a metal bar within the bus also pierced through her abdomen and uterus
causing many birth defects down the road. The recovery made by the strong spirited Frida Kahlo
was remarkable.
Frida attended a National Preparatory School in 1922 hoping to become a doctor. At the same
school, she saw Diego Rivera, painting "The Creation" ("Biography.com"). Frida was inspired and
approached Diego with her compliments. He told her to go home and return with a painting in one
week for him to judge. When she did as he asked, he was very impressed with her artistic ability and

It depicts the once again nude Kahlo on a bloody hospital bed, crying and holding images of a baby
and a pelvis. She went through over 30 surgeries to try to repair the damage and she was just left in

On September 17, 1925 she was riding a bus that collided with a trolley car, she suffered serious
injuries including a broken spinal column, a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a broken pelvis etc.

more recognizable by her signature unibrow and flower headdresses. This woman is known as Frida
Kahlo, a well known Mexican American surrealist artist who went through many struggles in
dealings with a challenging upbringing in a time of revolution and a lifetime of pain. But with a
challenge, there is also strength. Kahlo possessed many strengths that allowed her to prevail against

violated several principles in the Constitution of 1857 and The Mexican Revolution intent was to
create a more democratic Mexico and establishing limits to presidential terms to prevent what

The admiration that Kahlo feels towards the "indigenous aesthetic in Mexico" reveals the political
side of Kahlo's personality. From a young age, Kahlo was fortunate enough to be attending a
prestigious school, that a "few girls attended at a time" (Medina, ix). Through her education, Kahlo

Mexican revolutionary painter who is often regarded as a Surrealist. Julie Taymor's 2002 Oscar–
winning film Frida, charts the artist's fascinatingly tumultuous life, and provides much needed
insight into many of Kahlo's most famous works. The film features an all–star cast, with Salma
Hayek and Alfred Molina as its two leads. Yet far beyond simply providing clarification, the film
also allows us to carve out a theme of both Kahlo's life and the historical context of the film: art as
politician. This idea hinges on the conceptualization of artists using their art not just to tell a story,
but also to act as a sight of personal and political rebellion. Though the idea of using art to make a
political statement is nothing new, it becomes increasingly significant when the film's historical
