Media evaluation 2
1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR
MAIN PRODUCT AND
ANCILLARY TASKS?
2. When filming and creating my A2 coursework: music video; digipak and poster, I took
into careful consideration how it is important and part of the pop genre code and
conventions to link all the three together – this is called synergy. Synergy is when
several products/objects and different forms of media combine together to highlight
and promote one specific thing. For me, this was my artist ‘Melody’.
However, due to the narrative of my music video, it was very difficult for me to link all
three together. My narrative was based on a young, normal, teenage girl studying at
school, doing day to day stuff, who had very low self confidence and towards the end of
the music video gained confidence. Therefore, throughout my music video my artists
costume changes often, varying from dark clothing to light which means there wasn’t
one specific colour scheme for the clothes my artist wore within the music video. This
made it hard when coming to decide on what colours to use when creating my digipak
and poster, however I chose the closest colours to what I thought represented my
artists personality and the themes I was trying to portray in the music video.
introduction
4. For my digipak and poster, I had a pink, white and black colour theme. For my music
video I didn’t have one specific colour theme, however I did have colours which had the
same connotations as pink.
I had my artist dressed in a royal blue prom dress. This colour is similar to the pink as
they both connote power, girly and confidence It suggests that she is a friendly and
bubbly character as well as being sensitive and loyal. The pink also suggests the same;
that she is strong and loves herself therefore I thought pink was the best colour to use
to promote female empowerment and self-belief.
I took my inspiration from Beyonce’s music video as she is seen to be wearing vibrant
clothing to portray the same theme.
I then decided on having black and white as I thought the contrast of the two colours
revealed my characters personality, as well as with the pink. As black is a strong and
overpowering colour I thought it revealed that my artist was also strong. White is
completely the opposite to black as it implies innocence and angel-like. This shows
that my artist has an innocent side to her as well as being strong, powerful and fiery.

typography
As you can further see, I took inspiration for the title of my album
from Ariana Grande's ‘Yours Truly’ Album. I felt that having a hand-
written font for the title gave the album a personal feeling as it looks
like it is hand-written by the artist. It also suggests that she is girly
which contrasts with the bold, structured font for the artists name
revealing that she has two sides to her personality. This again is
shown through all 3 of my products as we see during the music video
that she does have a girly side when she dresses up to go to prom
and goes out with her friends.
I believe that it was important for me to portray my artists personality through all 3 of my products.
I did this by using the same typography; logo and artist name which not only will help the audience
recognise my artist but also where synergy is used to help create a strong, clear brand image.
6. BRAND IDENTITY
Creating a brand image is very important as it is a way of allowing the audience to
connect with the artist and remember who she is.
I portrayed my artist as a very strong, girly, positive and confident
on the album poster and digiapk as it links in to how she turned out
to be at the end of the music video. I did this by having the artist
dressed in a beautiful prom dress in all 3 of my products.
Furthermore, I took into consideration how my artist will stand and
pose as well as the facial expressions that she will do when filming
and when taking photos for the digipak and poster. I believe that
throughout all 3 of the products her facial expressions and body
language are similar – towards the end of the music video
especially.
I tried my best to have my artist pose in ways that revealed her as a
confident character as well as showing that she is powerful. For
example, one of the photos I took of my artist is when she is stood
in her prom dress with her hand on her hair and turned slightly to
the side, looking directly at the camera.
I kept my artists make-up very limited and natural throughout all 3
of my products, except for at the start of my music video where she
is seen with her hair shoved up and no make-up on. Making sure
the make-up looked the same and natural made her get the
message across that you don’t need make-up to look beautiful.
7. The main theme for my music video was self-confidence and female empowerment.
After doing research on different artists; different songs and different music videos I
found that these were two main common themes. Taking inspiration from artists such
as Beyoncé and Rihanna, I found that the topic and theme was aimed predominately at
my target audience and was very relatable.
After finalising the themes, I had to think of a way to portray them through all 3 of my
products. During my music video, it is clear that the artist had gained confidence and
became powerful through the use of mise-en-scene (what she was wearing and her
make-up); the way my artist posed, the locations used and when she is seen putting
makeup on.
For the digipak and poster, I made sure that I took the photos at a location that had
been seen in the music video - the stage. Having my artist stood on a stage suggests
that she is serious about her music but also revealing the themes of female
empowerment and girl power.
Synergy is used to keep the theme the same through out all 3 products, allowing the
audience to remember who our artist is.
THEMES
8. When filming footage for my music video I took cinematography into careful consideration as I
wanted my video to adhere to the pop genre code and conventions and to also reach my target
audience’s expectations.
I used many close-up’s of the ar tist which showed the ar tists facial expressions clear and in
detail. As well as this, close-ups suggests that the ar tist feels confident enough to have her face
shown in detail and not hidden away. Mid-shots and long-shots were also frequently used to show
the location and to show off what the ar tist was wearing. Long shots were used mainly towards the
end of the music video when the ar tist walked on to the stage as it showed where she was, what
she was doing and how open her body language was implying that she is now more confident than
ever.
High angles were used at the star t when she was gaining her confidence, however towards the end
straight angles and low angles were used revealing how her confidence has increased and she has
become a stronger and more power ful character.
I realised after doing plenty of research and watching other music videos that close ups, mid
shots and long shots are very popular. I took inspiration from Beyonces music video ‘Pretty Hur ts’.
For my digipak and poster, I used close-ups, mid shots and long shots which is where synergy
links all of the 3 products together.
CINEMATOGRAPHY
9. For all 3 products – music video, didgpak and poster, the mise-en-scene was
very important which I therefore thought about very carefully.
At the start of the music video when my artist was unhappy and insecure, I
had her dressed in very dark clothing which portrayed these themes.
However, half way through the music video, right to the end, my artist had
changed from dull colours to a bight royal blue prom dress. This implied that
she was very confident, glamorous and elegant. This links in to the digipak
and poster where the pink suggests the same as the blue – girly and love- to
show that she now loves and accepts herself.
Another aspect of mise-en-scene that was important during the music video
is the locations used. I used multiple locations, from the artists bedroom; to
a swimming pool and a stage. The bedroom was a way of showing that the
artist was unhappy at the start of the music video as it was where she
isolated herself as well as the swimming pool which was her way of trying to
lose weight and become happy within herself. However, the end of the music
video when she gains confidence she walks onto the stage holding a
microphone. This shows how she has changed and has become a stronger
character. I took inspiration for the stage location from Beyoncé's video
‘Pretty Hurts’ when the artist is at a dance competition.
We used the stage location, the prom dress and the themes portrayed in the
music video in all 3 of the products, this is a clear example of synergy.
MISE-EN-SCENE
10. In conclusion, I believe that all three products linked together through
my understanding and knowledge of synergy. I used the same location;
costume; props and themes in my music video, digipak and album
poster which has a huge impact on my target audience as they will
remember my artist ‘Melody, as well as it portraying my brand image.
I learnt that doing further research in depth helped me when deciding
on what to include and what to do when creating a good brand image.
Watching other music videos and seeing other albums and digipaks
made me realise how important it is to get the brand image right and
successful.
