Stephen King is a Portland, Maine, author who specializes in contemporary horror, suspense, and
fantasy novels and short stories. Many of his writings have been adapted into films and television
programs viewed by millions. Some of the most notable film adaptations include Carrie (1976), The
Shining (1980) and It (1990). King has been acknowledged as the most influential writer of our time
who has inspired countless other writers to contribute to the horror and suspense genre of written
tales.

His use his charaggcters or situations in the plots usually have readers reflecting upon them and
relating them to current problems in society (Nevala–Lee: "The Uncanny Influence of Stephen
King"). Some readers credit King for giving his protagonists inherently flawed but human traits; a
quality other writers in the horror genus hadn't attributed to their central characters in the past. King
has commented on his writing style as an outcome of his father leaving him and his family under the
pretense of going to buy a pack of cigarettes. His mother's death shortly after the release of "Carrie"
in 1974 led him into a deep depression and finding sustenance in alcohol. His brief embracement of
alcoholism also influenced him write "Cujo," a psychological horror novel about a rabid dog which
he barely remembered writing (Leafe: "Stephen King's Real Horror Story: How the Novelist's
Addiction to Drink and Drugs Nearly Killed Him"). The first novel he wrote after his depression
and fall into alcoholism was "Needful Things" (Lehman–Haupt et al.: Stephen King, The Art of

Analysis Of On Writing By Stephen King
There are many talented writers but there are some writers that are simply better than others. Writers
like Stephen King, have a different way of writing and a unique way of telling their story to the
readers. King's writings have lessons to teach you like just writing whatever that comes to your
mind. In reading the novel On Writing by Stephen King, I learned that if you want to be a writer you
must read and write a lot. If you want to be a writer you must want to write not for the things you
will hope to achieve from your writing.
There were many things I learned from the book. However when Stephen King said,"If you don't
have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that" (147).
This states that if your not able to make the time to read then ... Show more content on

Stephen King states that,"If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a
lot and write a lot. There's no way around these two things that I'm aware of, no shortcut" (145).
When you have the time to write you are able to find inspiration on what to write making you a
better writer. Something that affects everything you do in life not just writing is that you must love
to do it, "Writing isn't about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or making
friends. In the end, it's about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching
your own life, as well. It's about getting up, getting well, and getting over. Getting happy, okay?
Getting happy" (269). You write because you want to write and to tell your readers a story about

Horror In Stephen King : The King Of Horror
The King of Horror Stephen King is known to the world as the king of horror. His books and short
stories have caused fear in millions of people around the world. His use of literary elements, vivid
writing techniques, and the exploitation of people's primal fear all contribute to his success as the
world's greatest horror writing. One of the ways that Stephen King produces fear in readers is by
using many different literary elements. In many of his books, he uses the element of the paranormal.
In the short story Children of the Corn, King uses children that appear to have paranormal powers.
Also, in the book, Thinner paranormal elements come into play as well. In this book, there is a
gypsy woman that puts a curse on the main character that causes him to get thinner and thinner.
Another element that King uses in his books and short stories is science fiction. In the novel 11–22–
63, King uses time travel as the vehicle for suspense and intrigue, causing fear and an uneasy
feeling in the reader. In this story, a man travels back in time to try and stop the assassination of
president JFK. Another book that uses the element of science fiction is Under The Dome. In this
story, a small town is encased by a giant dome. Planes run into it and fall from the sky. A man had
his hand severed by the dome and families were separated from their families when the dome
appeared. All of these science fiction elements contributed to the fear in King's stories. The last
literary element used in King's writing to produce fear is gore. Several of his books rely on the gory
details of people getting attacked or killed. Books like Carrie, which was about a girl that goes on a
killing rampage during her senior prom, or Misery, which is about a writer who gets into an accident
and the woman that saves him tortures him until he is able to write again. In Misery,
dismemberment is used to scare people. King describes the dismemberment of a leg like this, "The
axe came whistling down and buried itself in Paul Sheldon's left leg just above the ankle . . . Dark–
red blood splattered across her face like Indian war–paint. It splattered the wall. He heard the blade
squeal against bone as she wrenched

Stephen King's personal experience and views on writing have defined his works of fiction. His
works, and his writing practices and methods, are reactionary to both the changing landscape of the
literary field around the length of his career and also a tumultuous personal life, saddled with
substance addiction and, later in life, a near fatal accident. As a burgeoning writer, King's early
works can be examined as works of creative expression, Carrie and Salem's Lot are unrestrained and
evidence of a writer merely wanting to tell a good story. As his fame rose, subsequent novels such as

As society evolves, King's works also exist in the contemporary moment, to the point where he
renounces particular works as dangerous in light of a rise in school shootings in the early 2000's.
Finally, King's cultural influence and work as a writer can be seen as he rose in fame and has
morphed from a genre pulp fiction writer to be, sometimes grudgingly, accepted by the literary elite.

The Horror Of Stephen King : The King Of Horror
The King of Horror
Horror is a genre of fiction intended to frighten, scare, or disgust its readers by inducing feelings of
terror. The dark allure of the this genre calls to many readers, writers, and people of the world. This
ghoulish world of horror is created by masterful writers, such as Stephen King. Self–proclaimed
horror and suspense writer, King is one of the world's most popular authors. With his show–stopping
novels IT and The Shining, he has forever impacted the horror genre. Stephen King's writing,
inspired by his life experiences and imagination, appeals to the masses, yet remains eloquent enough
to appease critics, leaving a lasting legacy in psychological horror literature.
The life of an author plays a large part in their writing. Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine,
on September 21st, 1947. Two years later, his father, Donald King disappeared, never to be seen or
heard from again – at least by his family (Kellman 1347). This left King and his older brother in
their mother's sole care. Her meager income forced them to rely on the charity of relatives.
According to King, he felt estranged, different perhaps, from all the other kids ("Overview of
Stephen (Edwin) King"). This experience would affect him for the rest of his life. You can find this
sense of estrangement layered heavily within IT. After finishing high school in 1966, King would go
on to graduate from the University of Maine at Orono, as an english major (Kellman 1347). While

Stephen King Analysis
Stephen King was born in 1947 into a poor family that was later abandoned by his father. He always
had a passion for writing and became a high school teacher before he could kick–start his
outstanding writing career says, "Biography.com". Stephen King, a 'New York Times'–bestselling
novelist and one of the most well known authors of our time, was directly influenced by the culture
he grew up in and his own experiences in life. "Here There Be Tygers" is one of King's earlier works
and it emits strong similarities between the short story and the culture he grew up in. In 1974, a year
after Stephen King's mother died of cancer, King had published the short story "Sometimes They
Come Back" (DeFilippo 1). Around the same time, Stephen King's substance abuse problem got
worse. In The double–edged pen: Omnipotent fantasies in the creativity and addictions of Stephen
King, King proposes, "The death of his mother was one of the major factors that propelled his
drinking habits to another level" (Kahoud 335). With those two things combined, death and
addiction, King was influenced. You can see this influence intermixed throughout the short story
"Sometimes They Come Back" and throughout many of his stories. In the story the tragedy of his
mother's cancer is seen throughout, for the main character's mother died of cancer as well (King 2).
The addiction is shown as well, through physical demons that drive the main character to an
eventual death. In the article, Stephen King: The

The Life and Works of Stephen King
"We make up horrors to help us cope with the real ones."
–Stephen King Throughout literary history, most recently in the past hundred years, people have
been seemingly enthralled with horror. For some reason, readers are drawn to read or watch the very
things that we fear to experience in real life. One of the most famous and influential horror authors
of the past century is Stephen King. For over forty years Stephen King has been writing very
successful horror novels. Some of his well–known works consist of Carrie (1974), Salem's Lot
(1975), and The Shining (1975). Although these are considered to be some of the best horror books

One such example involves one of King's most well–known and successful books; The Shining. In
1974 King visited Colorado on a vacation and stayed at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. This, along
with his recovery from his alcohol addiction inspired the setting for King's third book, The Shining.
The Shining was about a man named Jack Torrance who was a writer and also a recovering
alcoholic. After taking a job at as caretaker during the off season of the Overlook Hotel in Colorado,
his wife Wendy Torrance, and his son, Danny Torrance move into the hotel as well for the duration
of the job. His son, however, possesses an ability known as "the shining" which allows him to see
the events of the Overlook Hotel's horrific past. Soon after a snowstorm hits, the demonic forces of
the hotel cause Jack Torrance to gradually go insane causing him to attempt to murder his entire
family. King began to write The Shining in 1975, but the book itself was not published until January
of 1977. The book was a smash hit. The Shining and its success made King one of the most
promising and prominent horror genre authors in America during the 70's and 80's. In 1980, few
years after he published the book, The Shining was made into a film starring Jack Nicholson as Jack
Torrance, Shelley Duvall as Wendy Torrance, and Danny Lloyd as Danny Torrance and continued to

Stephen King and Carrie
Post WWII, horror authors began to deviate from traditional gothic style, and began to disturb
readers with science fiction and fantasy mixed with modern dramatization. Such components of new
age horror included rising interests in parapsychology, manipulation of the reader's mind, and true
events to add some sickening reality to fictional events. Stephen King applied his unique
philosophies on his personal styles of writing his first hand knowledge of the 1950s–1970s and
bullying, and personal experiences to create a masterpiece in his novel, Carrie.
The very existence of Stephen King is gothic in itself; his mother was deemed infertile, doomed
never to birth a child. Yet in the winter of 1947, Nellie King became pregnant. ... Show more

King and Carrie have many less important details in common such as the fact that their existences
are rarities. Stephen King should never have been born due to his mother being deemed infertile
(Rogak 8), and Carrie telekinetic–enabling gene is the result of a very unlikely circumstance
involving recessive genes. Furthermore, both essentially grew up without a father. Small details like
these frequently parallel the two people's lives. However, King's incorporation of personal
components, compiled for one character allows her to have vividly realistic characteristics and
backstories. King also uses psychologically significant events from his life to mount the character
that is Carrie. King's frequent illness as a child left him to be isolated often (Rogak). Likewise,
Carrie often suffered isolation at the hands of her mother, as she would lock her in a religiously
adorned closet for sometimes days at time. This isolation is not only what causes King and Carrie to
have socialization defects, at different degrees, but what Carrie describes as "the red–plague circle
that had been drawn around her from the first day she had left the controlled environment of the
small house on Carlin Street" (King 26). The red plague circle is representative of the socialization
barrier between Carrie and her classmates. This mystical block is

Stephen King The Shining Theme
The Shining, by Stephen King, is a classic piece of American literature. Published in 1977, the story
focuses on the Torrance family, and their horrific adventure at the Overlook Hotel. Taking place in
1975 in the mountains of Colorado, the story takes a terrible turn towards death after Jack Torrance,
the father of the family, begins being taken over by the evil spirits that lurk in the hotel, and
essentially loses his mind. Jack begins expressing aggressive behavior and threatens to hurt his
family. In the end, he not only threatens, but actually attempts to kill his five–year–old son, Danny,
and his wife, Wendy. The orientation of the story around the family produces the theme of the novel,
that inner demons and fears can destroy us. There are many passages that demonstrate this theme
throughout the novel, and prove that it is the most prevalent theme.

Mr. Halloran is the only other character in the novel who can "shine", similar to Danny. Danny

plans to head to the Overlook to check on Danny. His fear for Danny's safety is expressed when
Stephen King writes, "Something had happened to the boy. He was sure of it. If anyone has hurt that

investigate the message. He is especially concerned about the fact that Danny's message cuts off

Stephen King, one of the world's greatest authors. He holds such creative and vibrant ideas, he talks
about things that are considered taboo to our society. He writes about things that would crawl out of
someone's worst nightmare. What could be the reason behind the writings, what are his motivations?
Let us dive into Stephen King's early life to get a feel of his true nature. Stephen King was born
September 21st, 1947 in Portland, Maine. It is known that most of his stories are set in Maine.
King's parents separated when he was two years old. He felt alone and when he was asked where he

Sadly, the marriage he had was unsuccessful, even though he had children he did not see it fit to
push through the marriage. Which is not hard to believe if you consider that women usually do not
appreciate men who are always drunk or stoned. Considering they had children together it seems a
bit selfish for both Stephen and his wife to both give up instead of giving it their all by working
through the problems that they had. This could also prove to be yet another motive to his strange
writing abilities. Perhaps with all of the things he was going through in that stage of his life is why
he wrote Night of the Living Dummy. This is one of the only children's book he ever wrote. A
common theory for why he wrote this book is to make up for the lost time he did not have with his
children or possibly the guilt of being an alcoholic during the impressionable years. Nothing could
make up for the lost time, but it does help that he found an outlet. Another big struggle he faced in
life is when he was struck by an automobile.
"In 1999, King was struck by an automobile while walking along a road near his home. His injuries
were quite severe, yet the famous author remained upbeat and philosophical during his lengthy
recovery. He incorporated this painful accident into much of his subsequent long fiction, including
Song of Susanna, the Dark Tower series, Lisey's Story, and Duma Key"

Telepathy In Stephen King

Telepathy at its Finest
Stephen King, a world renowned author, has had much success in the genres of horror, science
fiction and suspense. Due to his success, King decided to share some of his tricks of the trade in
order to help aspiring authors with his book On Writing. Before completing this book, writing to me
was just a pain. I remember this one quote that said, "If you want to be a writer, you must do two
things above all others: read a lot and write a lot"(King 145). I proceed to think, well shoot, I don't
do either of those things. No wonder I don't like writing and I'm not very good at it. Then as I
continued through the book, I thought back to the part where King described writing as a form of
telepathy, and it changed my whole perspective. Art has always been a way to express yourself and
share ideas in my mind. The idea of writing doing that, and in such a direct way, kind of blew my
mind. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense to me. The writer and the reader were
connected through time and space with these shared thoughts. The best example of this is the rabbit
in the cage:"The most interesting thing here isn't even the carrot–munching rabbit in the cage, but
the number on it's back. . .This is what we're both looking at, and we all see it. . .We're not even in
the same year together, let alone the same room . . . except we are together"(King 106). The freedom
that is opened up to the reader when imagining

mythic elements are being juggled here––that, despite all this apocalyptic stuff, the author's

Stephen King Rhetorical Analysis
Additionally, King builds his credibility with the utilization of ethos in his text in order to convince
them of his argument. By appealing to the readers' ethics, they can see how trustworthy King's
words are and then can let themselves be persuaded by his matter–of fact tone and professionalism
in writing. King is a realist, which means that he almost always represents things as they really are,
which profoundly helps establish his honest persona. Most of Stephen King's writing represents
more than one tenet, as his stories that he tells about his childhood and road to recovery from drug
addiction and alcoholism can be seen as not only pathos, but and etho as well, as these stories help
the readers to understand what kind of person he is, and how he accomplished all of his success
despite a couple of major roadblocks. This is why it can be seen that King uses pathos most heavily
in his writing, by telling vivid stories, etc. in order to touch upon human emotion towards human
experiences/traits, while also creating a strong voice in his writing as well. The overlapping of these
appeals help support the ethics and sensibility of King's work. There are scores of times where it can
be clearly identified where ethos have been used in his writing. For example, King says "I'm a slow
reader, but i usually get through seventy or eighty books a year, mostly fiction. I don't read in order
to study the craft; i read because i like to read.– Similarly, I don't read to study the art of fiction, but
simply because I like stories–Every book you pick up has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often
the bad books have more to teach than the good ones" (King, pg 145) This helps to support the idea
that writing is learned through reading, and also is learned through the mistakes of other writers.
There is no better way to learn than to look at a piece of writing that has some minor or even major
flaws and to analyze the piece to see what the issue is, and learn from their mistake to better your
own writing in the future. Another one of King's main arguments is that no writer is perfect. There
are always things that you can do to make your writing even better, no matter how small the
adjustment may be. It's a learning process

His mother, Nellie, died shortly after learning of the sale of Carrie. Three years after it was sold to

was called Salem's Lot. It was sold for $500,000. He was then cast as a horror writer. Surely enough

movies. He later left Doubleday and went to New American Library. He chose to do this for money

terrifying and scary things, he is fearful of most things, and has a very long list of fear ranging from
fear of bugs to a fear of himself. I believe these fears help him tell the stories in regular everyday
people's lives. He knows what scares readers because he himself is afraid of the very same things.

On Writing Stephen King Summary
The crafted memoir of Stephen King "On Writing", starts off as an autobiography of several tales of
inspirational breakthroughs and unfortunate mishaps. "On Writing" recollected with me, From a
young age, Stephen King learned the reality of the real world. Though I was much older than
Stephen King when my parents had separated I too dealt with the same circumstance. Though I wish
i've had the geniuses of Dave King or the talent of Stephen King. My mother didn't just separate
with my father, but with her own children. My father struggling to make ends meat for his 5 kids he,
too, like Nellie Stephens mother had to make sacrifices. My father became a very busy man I hardly
ever got to see him, like Stephen I grew up with lots of sitters. Ordinarily because of the time
difference between Stephen and I Stephen saw the world before social media and electronics by his
own creativity. Therefore, I found it very discouraging to know that by seven years old, Stephen had
begun writing stories. No doubt in my opinion the first part the "C.V.", King's background story is a
very important piece of information. Not for this response paper, but for the readers out there who
are in the same way like I need tips and encouragement in ways of tackling writing. I find writing to
be torture or more as a punishment from hell. As I read "On Writing", strangely enough the book felt

The king of giving children sleepless nights and nightmares, has to be Stephen King. His horror
novels will frighten and send shivers down your spine, yet all those uneasy emotions you feel are
worth it. His popular characters and unique way of writing shows how worthy he is to be the
extraordinary author he is. The mind of Stephen King is one everyone would like to explore, even if
you're not fond of him. It's the birthplace of his iconic characters that are still relevant to this day.
For example, his character, Pennywise, recently got a new movie remake. The original It came out
in 1990 and it is now 2017. It has come a long way because people want more from the characters.
They want more thrilling, frightening tales from the crew. Another character that is still relevant is
Carrie White. Carrie was King's first novel in 1974 and got a movie in 1976. The movie Carrie also
got a remake in 2013 and was definitely a success. It seems to be a pattern to how his works make a

His choice of words makes his writing unique and interesting that makes you want to keep reading.
The vocabulary he uses matches perfectly with one another and creates this life and excitement.
Such as, in Cycle of The Wolf. For instance, he wrote, "...but it's too late and his scream is lost under
that snarling roar that rises in a sudden, chilling glissade to a howl." The words snarling, chilling,
and glissade all go nicely together and create this tingly feeling of being able to hear the frightening,
blood–curdling scream and howl that King wanted to achieve. Just from that sentence you are
latched on to the insane world of Stephen King. As critic Joshua Rotham said, "There are lots of
writers who tell it like it is, but only a few who, with such commitment and intensity, tell it like it
isn't. King takes the weird and gives it

On Writing Stephen King Analysis
Mini–Essay 1
The nonfiction piece, On Writing, by Stephen King, that is often told in a form that mirrors many
fiction stories. In a nonfiction work of literature, the expectation is a formal writing style that works
to convey the information without leading the reader astray. However, through the use of dialogue,
imagery, and literary techniques, King manages to combine the two genres into an informative piece
that is enjoyable to read.
Throughout On Writing, King converts the typical, formal tone of nonfiction writing into one that is
enjoyable, interesting, and in many cases humorous. "Oh my God, it's breathing, you realize. Maybe
it's even thinking. What in hell's name do I do next?" (King 136) This passage is a metaphor that
King uses to describe the feeling of creating your first really good paragraph. By comparing that to
the feeling of Frankenstein and his monster, King brings a fiction aspect to this text that makes the
text far more enjoyable to read. Kings' dialogue also creates an informal tone in On Writing.
"Fuhgeddaboudit!"(King 123) The beauty of this single word is the fact that it is no word at all. In
order to properly express his frustration at common writing mistakes, King puts all his emotion into
the phonetics of this word and not necessarily in the actual meaning of it.
Imagery plays a very important role in On Writing. In the nonfiction world what you normally meet
are the facts with little, if any fluff. "The lid was held down by big latches; to my

"Carrie" Stephen King
Horror
Carrie is a story about a girl who has never fit in at school. All the other kids were always mean to
her. They ether never thought of her feelings, or didn't care. One day, in the girls locker room, the
teasing got out of hand. This time, a teacher caught them. This time, revenge was in order. At least,
that's what Chris Hargensen thought. The punishment for their crime, no prom. Chris wasn't going
down without a fight, but she sure went down. When a vicious prank is pulled on Carrie at the
dance, she snaps and unleashes he telegenic power on all the kids, teachers, parents, and the rest of
the town. The town will burn with Carrie's revenge, but will she burn with it?
Carrie White– Carrie is the main character (you can tell by the title), but I would also say she is
partially the antagonist. Her mother raised her to be very religious and told her almost everything
she did was a sin. When Carrie wasn't like the other kids, they made fun of her. When they would
make fun of her, she got mad. And when she got mad, bad things happened. Carrie learned she had
telekinesis. The older she got the more interested she became in her power, so she learned to control
it. But a horribly treated girl and a dangerous power don't mix.
Sue Snell– Susan Snell is the perfect girl every parent wants as their daughter. Good grades, nice to
everyone at school, and very pretty and popular. But when the teasing broke out in the locker room
she joined in.

Stephen King Influences
Stephen King is one of today's most popular and best selling horror writers. King combines the
elements of psychological chills and paranormal. He loves to mess with the heads of his readers,
often making them feel sorry for his characters, such as in stories of Carrie and The Green Mile,
which both exhibit supernatural factors. King also tends to fancy writing from a viewpoint that the
readers can get into. The vast majority of King's stories occur in places his American readers can
relate to personally. It is uncommon to walk the streets and converse with someone who has not

One of King's most famous works, and its fame is partly because of the movie, is the Green Mile. It
has many Christian qualities throughout. "The Green Mile, a large, African–American man named
John Coffey, seems to mirror the life of Jesus Christ, although the story is set in the death row area
of a depression–era prison"( The Writing Style of Stephen King, para 35). The story really hits home
with people about the selflessness of Jesus Christ. For Christians and people who have a general
idea of the Bible, they will understand this story. John Coffey was prosecuted for from something he
did not do. He was a healer of the sick. He used supernatural powers to help the sick, as he heals one
of the Ward's wife who has a brain tumor towards the end of the novel. In "The Green Mile," King
uses magical realism to introduce his readers to supernatural elements taking place in an ordinary
realistic environment" (The Writing Styles of Stephen King para 20). In life we can experience
things that do not seem real even though they can happen is why it is magical to us. Sometimes
people feel like they are accused of things do not do and have to get punished for it, just as Coffey
was. John eventually has to die for the sins he did not commit, but he does not go without first

Stephen king is a famous American author who is best known for his horror
novels. Stephen king has written many books including notable titles ones like "it"

provides for an entertaining read. The book presents the reader with a quick and
easy read of a coming of age story with King's signature gruesome twist.
While some of Stephen king's work is incredibly long and challenging to read,
"Carrie" in contrast is much shorter and easier to finish and comprehend. The small
things King does such as writing thoughts and inner monologue in parenthesis like
when he writes "Someone in the background (perhaps Hargensen again, Sue couldn't

Gothic Characteristics in
Stephen King's Works Everyone is always afraid of the unknown. Children aren't afraid of the dark
as they are afraid of what comes out in the dark. People aren't afraid of death as they are afraid of
what happens after death. Stephen King, a distinguished gothic author, focuses his works on that
unknown. His horror stories portray the fear interrupting the ordinary life because according to him,
"We're afraid of change." Despite being one of the most renowned and successful horror writers,
there are those that question his writing style to be downgrading like a pulp, not understanding that

using his own original narrative voice. Accordingly, "[f]ears aren't something, King realized, that are
confined to us as children. Those same terrifying thoughts often rear their heads in our adult lives,
often manifesting in vastly different, far more complicated ways" (Smythe). Thus, Stephen King

Analysis of Stephen King
Stephen King: On Writing
Stephen King is a man of many talents and personalities; not only is he able to scare his readers
immensely, he is also able to make them laugh. I chose a passage from Stephen King's On Writing
for this assignment; the passage stuck in my mind for a long time after I finished the book. His
writing style is unique compared to the other autobiographies I have read over the years. Everything
that a person writes has a meaning or purpose whether it's a letter or an essay and voice, tone, and
style play a very important part in how the reader views the piece of writing. King manipulates the
rules of writing in order to emphasize the meaning of the passage, which is to describe an early
childhood experience, so the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

separated by semi–colons and many comas.
King also chose certain terms to describe Eula–Beulah, which can be described as rhetorical
features. " .she was as big as a

King Stephen King Reflection
The video "Stephen King on Childhood" changed the way I look at things. He claims, "the things
that really scare us are the things that are going on just outside the spotlight that you can't quite see"
("Stephen King on Childhood"). The video starts off with Stephen King talking about a day he was
walking and came across a little girl on the side of the street drawing in the dirt talking to herself or
an imaginary person. Then, he thought to himself, "If I did that, somebody would come along and
say there's a grown man sitting in the dirt, talking to himself to people who aren't there and drawing
with a stick" ("Stephen King on Childhood"). If I saw a grown man doing that, I would be a little
creeped out. If a little kid was doing it, I would think that was a normal thing for kids to do. He is
talking about how when we are kids, we can think, imagine, and dream about whatever we want
because there are no limits. When we start growing up, we realize what reality is. We snap into this
new mode and change the way we think, imagine, and dream. When I was a kid, I would think the
most bizarre things, like when I would connect anything to a face, like cars, buildings, clouds,
houses, etc. I would try to explain it to my parents they would think I was crazy and had no idea
what I was talking about. Next, the interviewer, Thomas Smith, asks Stephen, "Did you have a
highly developed sense of evil yourself as a child or were you obsessed by the nature of evil?"
(Stephen King on Childhood). King then goes on to ask why people ask about his childhood. He
does not remember having an unusual childhood. Then, because of him not remembering,
something bad must have happened when he was a kid. King then goes on to talk about, "I think a
lot of people make the assumption that we block memories that are terrible. When I think what
really happens is this: that we think in a different way as children. we tend to think around corners
instead of in straight lines. sometimes for a kid, the shortest distance between two points is not a
straight line and that's the way that we think and dream"(Stephen King on Childhood). He says he
uses this thought to connect childhood memories to his paranormal present time stories. I think that

Suspense In Stephen King
Most readers identify Stephen King's works as horror, however he sees them as suspense novels
(citation needed). Stephen King is often associated with the horror genre because of his excessive
use of gore in his novels. However, gore is merely a side agenda that helps King shape his ideas.
Instead, King's main goal is to create suspense. By creating a vivid image of the impact of a murder,
rape, or other catastrophe he is able to foster his goal by unnerving his reader and creating a conflict.
Stephen King's extensive and creative use of detail and literary elements in his novels assists the
motive for the conflict between good and evil, constructs a complete depiction of the supernatural
and reality, and builds an ongoing sense of tension. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, King writes "Big Jim dropped the ball to his side. His shoulder was throbbing. Now
blood was pouring onto the carpet, and still the son–of–a–buck [Coggins, priest] wouldn't go down;
still he came forward, trying to talk and spitting scarlet in a fine spray" (King 292). First, this
example shows the great detail he goes into when describing a murder. Second, this quote shows
how he used the detail to magnify the evil in Big Jim. Most importantly, it sets up the story for Big
Jim to frame Barbie, the good guy, for the murder of Coggins and three others. Lucky for Jim,
people trust him because he has been in Chester's Mill longer than Barbie. Sadly, this means
Barbie's friends have to come together to destroy the corruption set up by Big Jim. Thus, this detail
sets up the battle between good and evil. Consistently, King uses this method to shape the

He went from struggling to reach ends meet to becoming one of the most acclaimed writers in the

Some readers credit King for giving his protagonists inherently flawed but human traits; a quality other writers in the horror genus hadn't attributed to their central characters in the past. King has commented on his writing style as an outcome of his father leaving him and his family under the pretense of going to buy a pack of cigarettes. His mother's death shortly after the release of "Carrie" in 1974 led him into a deep depression and finding sustenance in alcohol. His brief embracement of alcoholism also influenced him write "Cujo," a psychological horror novel about a rabid dog which he barely remembered writing (Leafe: "Stephen King's Real Horror Story: How the Novelist's Addiction to Drink and Drugs Nearly Killed Him"). Writers like Stephen King, have a different way of writing and a unique way of telling their story to the readers. King's writings have lessons to teach you like just writing whatever that comes to your mind. In reading the novel On Writing by Stephen King, I learned that if you want to be a writer you must read and write a lot. If you want to be a writer you must want to write not for the things you will hope to achieve from your writing. There were many things I learned from the book. However when Stephen King said,"If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that" (147). Something that affects everything you do in life not just writing is that you must love to do it, "Writing isn't about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or making friends. • 4. Horror In Stephen King : The King Of Horror The King of Horror Stephen King is known to the world as the king of horror. His books and short stories have caused fear in millions of people around the world. His use of literary elements, vivid writing techniques, and the exploitation of people's primal fear all contribute to his success as the world's greatest horror writing. One of the ways that Stephen King produces fear in readers is by using many different literary elements. In many of his books, he uses the element of the paranormal. In the short story Children of the Corn, King uses children that appear to have paranormal powers. Also, in the book, Thinner paranormal elements come into play as well. In this book, there is a gypsy woman that puts a curse on the main character that causes him to get thinner and thinner. Another element that King uses in his books and short stories is science fiction. In the novel 11–22– 63, King uses time travel as the vehicle for suspense and intrigue, causing fear and an uneasy feeling in the reader. In this story, a man travels back in time to try and stop the assassination of president JFK. Another book that uses the element of science fiction is Under The Dome. In this story, a small town is encased by a giant dome. Planes run into it and fall from the sky. A man had his hand severed by the dome and families were separated from their families when the dome appeared. All of these science fiction elements contributed to the fear in King's stories. The last literary element used in King's writing to produce fear is gore. Several of his books rely on the gory details of people getting attacked or killed. Books like Carrie, which was about a girl that goes on a killing rampage during her senior prom, or Misery, which is about a writer who gets into an accident and the woman that saves him tortures him until he is able to write again. In Misery, dismemberment is used to scare people. King describes the dismemberment of a leg like this, "The axe came whistling down and buried itself in Paul Sheldon's left leg just above the ankle . . . Dark– red blood splattered across her face like Indian war–paint. It splattered the wall. He heard the blade squeal against bone as she wrenched ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Stephen King Research Paper Stephen King's personal experience and views on writing have defined his works of fiction. His works, and his writing practices and methods, are reactionary to both the changing landscape of the literary field around the length of his career and also a tumultuous personal life, saddled with substance addiction and, later in life, a near fatal accident. As a burgeoning writer, King's early works can be examined as works of creative expression, Carrie and Salem's Lot are unrestrained and evidence of a writer merely wanting to tell a good story. "Here There Be Tygers" is one of King's earlier works and it emits strong similarities between the short story and the culture he grew up in. In 1974, a year after Stephen King's mother died of cancer, King had published the short story "Sometimes They Come Back" (DeFilippo 1). Around the same time, Stephen King's substance abuse problem got worse. In The double–edged pen: Omnipotent fantasies in the creativity and addictions of Stephen King, King proposes, "The death of his mother was one of the major factors that propelled his drinking habits to another level" (Kahoud 335). With those two things combined, death and addiction, King was influenced. You can see this influence intermixed throughout the short story "Sometimes They Come Back" and throughout many of his stories. In the story the tragedy of his mother's cancer is seen throughout, for the main character's mother died of cancer as well (King 2). The addiction is shown as well, through physical demons that drive the main character to an eventual death. In the article, Stephen King: The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Stephen King Research Paper Stephen King and Carrie Post WWII, horror authors began to deviate from traditional gothic style, and began to disturb readers with science fiction and fantasy mixed with modern dramatization. Such components of new age horror included rising interests in parapsychology, manipulation of the reader's mind, and true events to add some sickening reality to fictional events. Stephen King applied his unique philosophies on his personal styles of writing his first hand knowledge of the 1950s–1970s and bullying, and personal experiences to create a masterpiece in his novel, Carrie. Stephen King should never have been born due to his mother being deemed infertile (Rogak 8), and Carrie telekinetic–enabling gene is the result of a very unlikely circumstance involving recessive genes. Furthermore, both essentially grew up without a father. Small details like these frequently parallel the two people's lives. However, King's incorporation of personal components, compiled for one character allows her to have vividly realistic characteristics and backstories. King also uses psychologically significant events from his life to mount the character that is Carrie. King's frequent illness as a child left him to be isolated often (Rogak). Likewise, Carrie often suffered isolation at the hands of her mother, as she would lock her in a religiously adorned closet for sometimes days at time. This isolation is not only what causes King and Carrie to have socialization defects, at different degrees, but what Carrie describes as "the red–plague circle that had been drawn around her from the first day she had left the controlled environment of the small house on Carlin Street" (King 26). • 11. Stephen King The Shining Theme The Shining, by Stephen King, is a classic piece of American literature. Published in 1977, the story focuses on the Torrance family, and their horrific adventure at the Overlook Hotel. Taking place in 1975 in the mountains of Colorado, the story takes a terrible turn towards death after Jack Torrance, the father of the family, begins being taken over by the evil spirits that lurk in the hotel, and essentially loses his mind. Jack begins expressing aggressive behavior and threatens to hurt his family. In the end, he not only threatens, but actually attempts to kill his five–year–old son, Danny, and his wife, Wendy. The orientation of the story around the family produces the theme of the novel, that inner demons and fears can destroy us. Sadly, the marriage he had was unsuccessful, even though he had children he did not see it fit to push through the marriage. Which is not hard to believe if you consider that women usually do not appreciate men who are always drunk or stoned. Considering they had children together it seems a bit selfish for both Stephen and his wife to both give up instead of giving it their all by working through the problems that they had. This could also prove to be yet another motive to his strange writing abilities. Perhaps with all of the things he was going through in that stage of his life is why he wrote Night of the Living Dummy. This is one of the only children's book he ever wrote. A common theory for why he wrote this book is to make up for the lost time he did not have with his children or possibly the guilt of being an alcoholic during the impressionable years. Nothing could make up for the lost time, but it does help that he found an outlet. Another big struggle he faced in life is when he was struck by an automobile. "In 1999, King was struck by an automobile while walking along a road near his home. Telepathy In Stephen King Allie Balzer Writing 121––2017–2018 Telepathy at its Finest Stephen King, a world renowned author, has had much success in the genres of horror, science fiction and suspense. Due to his success, King decided to share some of his tricks of the trade in order to help aspiring authors with his book On Writing. Before completing this book, writing to me was just a pain. I remember this one quote that said, "If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot"(King 145). I proceed to think, well shoot, I don't do either of those things. No wonder I don't like writing and I'm not very good at it. Then as I continued through the book, I thought back to the part where King described writing as a form of telepathy, and it changed my whole perspective. Art has always been a way to express yourself and share ideas in my mind. The idea of writing doing that, and in such a direct way, kind of blew my mind. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense to me. The writer and the reader were connected through time and space with these shared thoughts. The best example of this is the rabbit in the cage:"The most interesting thing here isn't even the carrot–munching rabbit in the cage, but the number on it's back. . .This is what we're both looking at, and we all see it. . .We're not even in the same year together, let alone the same room . . . except we are together"(King 106). • 15. Stephen King Rhetorical Analysis Additionally, King builds his credibility with the utilization of ethos in his text in order to convince them of his argument. By appealing to the readers' ethics, they can see how trustworthy King's words are and then can let themselves be persuaded by his matter–of fact tone and professionalism in writing. King is a realist, which means that he almost always represents things as they really are, which profoundly helps establish his honest persona. Most of Stephen King's writing represents more than one tenet, as his stories that he tells about his childhood and road to recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism can be seen as not only pathos, but and etho as well, as these stories help the readers to understand what kind of person he is, and how he accomplished all of his success despite a couple of major roadblocks. This is why it can be seen that King uses pathos most heavily in his writing, by telling vivid stories, etc. in order to touch upon human emotion towards human experiences/traits, while also creating a strong voice in his writing as well. The overlapping of these appeals help support the ethics and sensibility of King's work. There are scores of times where it can be clearly identified where ethos have been used in his writing. For example, King says "I'm a slow reader, but i usually get through seventy or eighty books a year, mostly fiction. I don't read in order to study the craft; i read because i like to read.– Similarly, I don't read to study the art of fiction, but simply because I like stories–Every book you pick up has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more to teach than the good ones" (King, pg 145) This helps to support the idea that writing is learned through reading, and also is learned through the mistakes of other writers. There is no better way to learn than to look at a piece of writing that has some minor or even major flaws and to analyze the piece to see what the issue is, and learn from their mistake to better your own writing in the future. Another one of King's main arguments is that no writer is perfect. There are always things that you can do to make your writing even better, no matter how small the adjustment may be. • 21. On Writing Stephen King Analysis Mini–Essay 1 The nonfiction piece, On Writing, by Stephen King, that is often told in a form that mirrors many fiction stories. In a nonfiction work of literature, the expectation is a formal writing style that works to convey the information without leading the reader astray. However, through the use of dialogue, imagery, and literary techniques, King manages to combine the two genres into an informative piece that is enjoyable to read. Throughout On Writing, King converts the typical, formal tone of nonfiction writing into one that is enjoyable, interesting, and in many cases humorous. "Oh my God, it's breathing, you realize. Maybe it's even thinking. What in hell's name do I do next?" (King 136) This passage is a metaphor that King uses to describe the feeling of creating your first really good paragraph. By comparing that to the feeling of Frankenstein and his monster, King brings a fiction aspect to this text that makes the text far more enjoyable to read. Kings' dialogue also creates an informal tone in On Writing. "Fuhgeddaboudit!"(King 123) The beauty of this single word is the fact that it is no word at all. In order to properly express his frustration at common writing mistakes, King puts all his emotion into the phonetics of this word and not necessarily in the actual meaning of it. Imagery plays a very important role in On Writing. In the nonfiction world what you normally meet are the facts with little, if any fluff. "The lid was held down by big latches; to my ... Analysis of Stephen King Stephen King: On Writing Stephen King is a man of many talents and personalities; not only is he able to scare his readers immensely, he is also able to make them laugh. I chose a passage from Stephen King's On Writing for this assignment; the passage stuck in my mind for a long time after I finished the book. His writing style is unique compared to the other autobiographies I have read over the years. Everything that a person writes has a meaning or purpose whether it's a letter or an essay and voice, tone, and style play a very important part in how the reader views the piece of writing. King manipulates the rules of writing in order to emphasize the meaning of the passage, which is to describe an early childhood experience, so the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 34. King Stephen King Reflection The video "Stephen King on Childhood" changed the way I look at things. He claims, "the things that really scare us are the things that are going on just outside the spotlight that you can't quite see" ("Stephen King on Childhood"). The video starts off with Stephen King talking about a day he was walking and came across a little girl on the side of the street drawing in the dirt talking to herself or an imaginary person. Then, he thought to himself, "If I did that, somebody would come along and say there's a grown man sitting in the dirt, talking to himself to people who aren't there and drawing with a stick" ("Stephen King on Childhood"). If I saw a grown man doing that, I would be a little creeped out. If a little kid was doing it, I would think that was a normal thing for kids to do. He is talking about how when we are kids, we can think, imagine, and dream about whatever we want because there are no limits. When we start growing up, we realize what reality is. We snap into this new mode and change the way we think, imagine, and dream. When I was a kid, I would think the most bizarre things, like when I would connect anything to a face, like cars, buildings, clouds, houses, etc. I would try to explain it to my parents they would think I was crazy and had no idea what I was talking about. Next, the interviewer, Thomas Smith, asks Stephen, "Did you have a highly developed sense of evil yourself as a child or were you obsessed by the nature of evil?" (Stephen King on Childhood). King then goes on to ask why people ask about his childhood. He does not remember having an unusual childhood. Then, because of him not remembering, something bad must have happened when he was a kid. King then goes on to talk about, "I think a lot of people make the assumption that we block memories that are terrible. When I think what really happens is this: that we think in a different way as children. we tend to think around corners instead of in straight lines. sometimes for a kid, the shortest distance between two points is not a straight line and that's the way that we think and dream"(Stephen King on Childhood). He says he uses this thought to connect childhood memories to his paranormal present time stories. I think that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Suspense In Stephen King Most readers identify Stephen King's works as horror, however he sees them as suspense novels (citation needed). Stephen King is often associated with the horror genre because of his excessive use of gore in his novels. However, gore is merely a side agenda that helps King shape his ideas. Instead, King's main goal is to create suspense. By creating a vivid image of the impact of a murder, rape, or other catastrophe he is able to foster his goal by unnerving his reader and creating a conflict. Stephen King's extensive and creative use of detail and literary elements in his novels assists the motive for the conflict between good and evil, constructs a complete depiction of the supernatural and reality, and builds an ongoing sense of tension. ... Now blood was pouring onto the carpet, and still the son–of–a–buck [Coggins, priest] wouldn't go down; still he came forward, trying to talk and spitting scarlet in a fine spray" (King 292). First, this example shows the great detail he goes into when describing a murder. Second, this quote shows how he used the detail to magnify the evil in Big Jim. Most importantly, it sets up the story for Big Jim to frame Barbie, the good guy, for the murder of Coggins and three others. Lucky for Jim, people trust him because he has been in Chester's Mill longer than Barbie. Sadly, this means Barbie's friends have to come together to destroy the corruption set up by Big Jim. • 39. Stephen King Research Paper Writer Stephen King has written over fifty bestselling books and has been awarded multiple awards. He went from struggling to reach ends meet to becoming one of the most acclaimed writers in the country. After reaching the peak of his success, King compiled a list of sixteen rules that every writer, especially students, should try to adhere to. While some may be of minimal help, others are significant and should be followed by every AP Language and Composition student. In a society where communication is key, students must learn how to effectively convey thoughts and ideas. According to Stephen King's first rule, "If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot" (145). For an AP Language student, reading should be a primary concern. By reading news stories and even novels, the student would be able to expand his or her vocabulary and improve his or her skills. Evidently, knowing about current events and hot topics in the world, the student would also be able to develop ideas and opinions. Their opinions and perspectives can then be used to fuel ideas that can be injected into essays and papers. Without one, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While writing on these issues, however, the student should never force the plot of the paper. Granted that AP Language students are usually asked to write nonfiction, forcing large vocabulary words and unnecessary sentences into the assignment should be frowned upon. Although the plot of a prose and the main idea of nonfiction are different things, both should naturally flow and make sense ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
