1. Shot Count for Rihanna “What Now”
Rihanna's 2012 release music video for her song “what now”, portrays Rihanna
as a good representation of a female artist in the pop genre. The video contains
131 different shotcount, within the shot counts there is a performance based
video which is what I want to do, with short snappyshots of abstract shots, with
most of video highlighting the 'star'. Within the video there is a variation of
different effective use of cutaway shots/the layering of shots, this is something
we are replicating in our video are it creates a more three dimensional feel to the
camera work as well as being visually pleasing. “What Now” had been
nominated for; world music award for world’s best video and world music
award for world’s best song. The artist, Rihanna in the video is isolated
locations, creating a sole focus in her as the artist rather than a busy/packed
mise-en scene, this helps us relate to the song and puts her on the same level as
us. This is a common feature in slower/ballad like songs as it reflected the tone
of the song, Near the end of the song, as the song climaxes, to the beat of the
song, what I believe to be secondaryfootage is used such as wild animals, lions
and metal tools. This creates a harsher tone reflecting the lyrics to the audience.
