Global News:
The Bank of Canada fully abandoned its bias toward raising interest rates as the
economy grapples with a slowdown, bringing its policy in line with the Federal
Reserve and other major industrial central banks. Policy makers in Ottawa left their
benchmark overnight rate unchanged at 1.75% for a fourth straight decision
Wednesday, and dropped a reference to future increases that had been in every rate
statement since the end of 2017.
The Bank of England is likely to keep interest rates on hold until August 2020 because
of a slower global economy and prolonged uncertainty about Brexit.
South Korea’s GDP shrank the most in a decade as declining investment, weakness in
the technology sector and falling exports take a toll on Asia’s fourth-largest economy.
The 0.3% contraction in the first quarter from the previous three months, versus
estimates for a 0.3% gain, is likely to further dent the popularity of President Moon
Jae-in as his push to boost jobs and incomes falters.

The Saudi Jordanian Investment Fund (SJIF) held its second General Assembly meeting on April 23, which was attended by
the company’s shareholders, the Board of Directors, representatives from the Companies Control Department, and the
external auditors, Ernst & Young. During the meeting, SJIF showcased its progress since its inception in 2017, the latest
developments in the projects and opportunities it is currently pursuing, and the advancement it has made in formulating its
investment strategy and internal operations.
Prime Minister Omar Razzaz said:- Healthcare spending in the Kingdom is “wasteful” considering the unsatisfactory
coverage and the fact that Jordan has a young population, on Saturday. As around JD2.2 billion is spent annually on the
health sector, both public and private, constituting 8.5 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP), in comparison with
JD1 billion a decade ago.
Saudi Arabia is speeding up the process to allow more global banks to operate in the oil-rich kingdom, the central bank
governor said, after Credit Suisse Group AG received a license.
Saudi Arabia's finance minister said on Wednesday the kingdom recorded a budget surplus of SAR27.8 billion (USD7.41
billion) in the January-March period, its first since oil prices plunged in 2014. The finances of the world's largest oil exporter
were hit hard by the slump in crude prices, which led to a deficit of SAR367 billion, or about 15% of GDP, in 2015.
Qatar has decided to withdraw its measures against the UAE in a significant concession aimed at averting the
consequences of the UAE’s case in WTO against an illegal Qatari ban on UAE goods and services.

Turkey’s sovereign wealth fund injected 3.3 billion euros (USD3.7 billion) into five state-owned banks to bolster their
capital and keep credit flowing in the recession-hit economy. A market stability fund within the government-controlled
investor bought debt issued by the lenders under a recapitalization program announced Monday, which will see a further
400 million euros flow to Islamic lenders.
